Diplomacy and Events / Re: Chistopol and Matthelon

The agreed upon date had arrived. Tartu had not seen foreign dignitaries for some time now and the King was keen to make a good impression. He ensured that the streets leading from the airport to the Woodside Palace that sat just outside the capital had their trees neatly pruned, the gutters swept and the store fronts made at least presentable. Truth be told it wasn't such a big job as Karlis had imagined. In the last three or four years the capital had been improved imensely from the days when it had been a bit of a wreck thanks to decades of communist occupation followed by struggles with rebuilding the nation. The King though now spent little time in the capital and at the age of 92 few could blame him. He had fought in the anti-communist resistance and then done his best to give the people more of a say in running the nation than either his grandfather had or the communists had. The nation was seemingly on a trajectory to become a monarchy in name only but until then Karlis still intended to have some input into foreign affairs as his role entitled him too.

His grand-daughter Viktoras was the Royal Matron, responsible for helping manage the families affairs and she had urged her grand-father to stay at the Palace allowing her to welcome their guests. The King had stubbonly refused and now was hobbling towards the waiting honour guard on two walking sticks. Seeing the monarch approach the Guards snapped to attention in their all black dress uniform. Their commander gave the King a smart salute and reported the men were ready for the arrival of the guests from Matthelon. "Stand easy sir" the King said doing his best to return the salute. "I wish to just say how smart I think your boys look. Thank them for their duty when you get back to barracks" he said as he pottered off towards the blue carpet that marked where the Matthelon aircraft would arrive. As if on perfect timing the King's hearing aid supported ears picked up the hum of an approaching aircraft and once it had been directed into place the Guard's band began playing the Matthelon national anthem and presented a salute as the Matthelonians descended the steps.

"President Testruvial" Karlis handed Viktoras one of this sticks and extended a hand. "Its a pleasure to meet you. We'll be travelling to the Woodside Palace where my own Prime Minister is keen to help us get things moving. I trust Mattleon is well?" He enquired as he began moving towards the waiting car. The King and President would ride in the first car while Viktoras and Jana Sirusa in the second. As they headed towards the city Karlis was keen to point out the new central library that had replaced the Communist Workers Party Drill Hall. The pyramid structure was busy with students coming and going and outside people enjoyed the plaza. Next they passed the new National Theatre where Karlis was a frequent attender at the opera. "We've been busy these last few years trying to make Tartu a prettier city, as you can see the city, while colourful is in need of some TLC. I fear however I won't see the place restored to its former glory." He smiled. "How do we compare to your capital?" He enquired.

In the car behind Viktoras was more about business. "No doubt my grand-father is busy chatting away about the city." She shrugged, "I think I must warn you however that there will be a very definite agenda when talks begin. The Prime Minister I believe is keen to lessen my families power and my grand-father is likely to let his heir my uncle.....also called Karlis, do much of the talking from a royal stand-point. I love my uncle but he is sadly more convinced our family should exercise the final authority in the nation. It often can lead to difficultly with the Prime Minister and my uncle. I hope you can therefore be discreet and tell your President to be patiet. Eventually my grand-father usually steps in and finds a nice middle ground. Sadly we've elections in the summer and I believe the Prime Minister will have one eye on them. Now business aside I hope you'll enjoy your stay here. I know my grand-father encourages ambassadors to visit him often so I suspect you'll be getting plenty of invites."

To - The Honourable President Daina Testruvial of Matthelon

I am writing to you in order to gauge your interest at a meeting between our two nations. As nations of Eastern Aranye it has been far too long since our nations have sat down and talked together and I am hopeful that we can change that in the coming months. I have always longed for greater co-operation in the East of Aranye and would be delighted if perhaps our two governments can begin us down that path. With that in mind I would like to invite your government to come to Tartu for formal meetings between Prime Minister Darijus Laine, myself and your own delegation.

Should your calendar not permit a foreign visit we would be only too happy to visit your Federation at your earliest convenience.

Best Wishes
His Majesty King Kārlis IV of Chistopol

Karlis had not expected Sabrina to address him and found himself a little embarassed by her kind words. "Well there were a lot of my countrymen who did far more than me and loss much more. Thanks to them we've a Chistopol that's getting its feet under itself and I get to simply sit back and watch while younger and more intelligent people get to do the hard work." He smiled. "As for the football it was a poor occasion....only because we didn't bring the cup home. I'm told though those attending did enjoy it." By now the crowd were being ushured inside. Karlis and his grand-daughter Lady Viktorias were among the last to get in as the aging King leaned on his walking sticks. He was happy to get settled and prepared for the upcoming ceremony. He knew from the S.U.N business he'd seen that there would be blood letting but hadn't expected it to be so graphic. He wasn't exactly a stranger to blood but seeing such a beautiful ceremony rely on blood was a bit sad in his eyes.

The ceremony over Karlis stayed behind in the Temple sight seeing a while as his grand-daughter kept an eye on him.

King Kārlis IV suspected that this would be his final overseas visit. With it being a purely symbolic visit there had been no objections from First MInister Darijus Laine on him handling the occasion. Paracambi were a valued partner of the Kingdom with S.U.N. and so the King had been very keen to come and pay his respects. He had meet Benson once and liked the man and was happy that the Emperor had seemingly found happiness. He had lost his own first wife during the war against the Soviets and then his second wife had died in 2009. He had never considered remarrying and suspected he was far too old now to find love but he admired Benson for his new love. Karlis was beginning to feel his age now and even though he'd carried a walking stick for the last ten years he had slowly become more and more reliant on it and now he was using two. There had been suggestions that he use a wheelchair but he was determined to keep as active as he possibly could. While his legs may be getting weak though he was still able to potter around in his "shed" making furniture, he just now needed someone to do the bending for him. Sometimes that job fell to his grand-daughter, Lady Viktorias who had served as Royal Matron, a symbolic role of senior female royal, since 2009. She may have been just 14 then but since reaching the age of 21 she had embraced her role and as the most senior female blood relative of King Karlis took on important functions for the family. Today her task was not organising a ball or holding nails for her grand-father, it was to ensure he was ok. As the long flights came to an end Karlis asked one of the stewards to bring him his pair of black polished wood and silver topped canes. He pushed himself up waving away Viktorias offer of help and took an age to get himself down the aircraft steps before clinking his way over to the Crown Prince and the growing group of royals.  "Good morning Prince Marcus" He began, "Its wonderful to be here." he could already feel the heat helping his arthritis. "I hope your well and I look forward to having a chat once we get the beach party going? It will be a beach party won't it, I didn't have my grand-daughter pack my Speedos for nothing did I?" he laughed as Viktorias rolled her eyes before introducing herself. Karlis turned to King David and his wife slipping into Rus he greeted Stasya and then David. "One day I will make it a mission to beat a Morelander to an event" He greeted the pair and then turned to Sabrina and then Eijirō before looking for a seat.

"ARROGANCE OF MONARCHIES" SPILTS LEADERSHIP

Following the "referendum" on the independence of the Kingdom of Eigg returning a result of over 60% of Eiggites wanting independence from the Federation the government of Chistopol has been split on its response. Rather unsurprisingly Crown Prince Kārlis has come out in support of Queen Aoife of Eigg whereas the First Minister has given a much more cautious response. Following a meeting of the cabinet the First Minister made the following statement. "No one should be surprised that so many of the great monarchies of Mundus have jumped to support a young headstrong Queen. Not a single legal path has been followed in the creation of what she has called a referendum. Not a single motion put forward in the Federation's elected body, not a single petition presented, not even a motion for a debate on the future of the Federation. In a series of decisions that involve just a single person we have seen the apparatus of democracy usurped to reach an end that best suits Queen Aoife. Now she is being made to sound like some kind of martyr for her cause while simply having to face the very laws that govern the nation she lives in. In the coming days she will have her chance in court and as she herself said when her own father was sentenced to 7 years in prison for sexual offences, a sentence that in my view is far too lenient, "the result of court deliberations must, as always, be respected." Which also poses the question why had she not utilised the courts to right this injustice? The whole saga shows that in this case we have a monarch of a small part of the Federation who believes they can ride roughshod over the constitution of that nation when it suits."

Meanwhile Crown Prince Kārlis issued an open letter saying, "A monarch should be the sovereign power over their lands otherwise they are not a monarch. Queen Aoife is not a puppet for the Federation and I wish her campaign well and know all Chistopolians will be hopeful of her immediate release as that is the right thing to do."

Polls done by this publication however show that around 72% of Chistopolians believe the Queen should appear in court however 61% believe that a referendum should be re-run in a more official capacity. This is a move suggested by King David of East Moreland and seconded by the First Minister who said, " It is surprising to see a monarch from a highly undemocractic nation standing by the motion of democracy. I have meet King David and I like and respect him. While I hope he will embrace a more democratic system he at least is trying to find a sensible way forward and I would hope Queen Aoife would pay attention to wise fellow monarch rather than a baying herd of crowns." This publication did as King Kārlis for a statement however a Royal Press Officer simply said, "The matter is for Eigg and the Federation to reach what we hope will be a peaceful solution."

Diplomacy and Events / Re: One Hand Washes The Other (Nis and Chistopol)
« on: August 21, 2022, 09:28:02 PM »
Thankfully this was not a long trip and so the awkward small talk between the trio hadn't been too long. Darijus apologised for needing to sleep for most of the journey and that had left the King and his son to chat without the need for including the First Minister. Having arrived at White Palace it was Prince Motiejus who exited the car first followed by Darijus, both men bowed respectfully to Kynev before the Prince opened the other door for his father while Darijus offered a hand of support for the 90 year old monarch. While Laine may advocate for Chistopol becoming a Republic at some point he realised the symbolism that Karlis represented to the general public and he personally respected the old man who resolutely waved away both men's offers of help. He approached Kynev his black polished cane with silver leopards head topper clasped in his left hand and clicking on the ground as he walked. He shook hands with Kynev, "Thank you for the invitation." he added. He waited for his son and FIrst Minister to make their own introductions and then tottered off after their host. "A cup of coffee would be lovely" the King replied, "maybe a bit of a catch up about the going ons in Nis, maybe an update on King Basil and then we can take matters from there."

« on: August 01, 2022, 08:36:08 PM »
Prince Oleg had been quiet shocked when his father requested he accompany the First Minister on his trip to Samantra. It was his first major overseas trip as a member of a delegation. Sat opposite him on the flight was First Minister Darijus Laine and he was rather releived that it was the middle of the nations three Princes that sat next to him on the flight. He'd undertaken trips with King Karlis, a man he respected and who was good company. Sadly he'd undertaken even more with Crown Prince Karlis and hated every minute. Oleg though was different by the fact that he had not been groomed for the throne and as such was more like a well read civil servant than a royal.

With Samantra being a Republic the Prince was there merely as a token nod towards the fact that at least on paper the royal family still had some input on foreign policy yet that was more ceremonial than anything else. Oleg suspected Darijus was bidding his time and that Karlis, either senior or junior would be the last King of Chistopol. For now though all that was important was this meeting with the President of Samantra. Thankfully the flight was relatively short and upon arrival the Chistopolian duo exited the aircraft, the Prince first but with the Prime Minister a step behind.

Chistopol likewise agree to this.

OOC- With Rob on LOA he was down for this so consider this a done deal.

On the edges of Tartu sit a number of Soviet era industrial complexes. Many of these are now lying in ruins such as ones in a suburb known as Brenzak. These are known as brown-field sites as their soil may contain small, but treatable, amounts of ground pollution. Currently sites such as Brenzak are being made avaliable to developers for a range of projects. This particular site fufils the criteria that you request and was once used for a metal recylcing facility and various associated storage areas, as such the ground pollution is more ash related and can relatively easily be removed. We propose to transfer the land to Umarov on the following conditions.

1) All thoroughfares such as pavements, roads and paths are accessible to the general public and shall remain classified as public property.

2) Prior to construction assessors from our Environmental Ministry must pronounce the site as clear of damaging pollutants.

3) At least 15% of appartments must fulfil our criteria as "affordable housing". Under Chistopol policy any housing project of over 300 dwellings must contain at least 15% of them which are sold or rented at no more than 80% of the average house price within 10km. So for example the current average house price in the region is $900 per square meter. Building regulations state that a two bedroom property must be a minimum of 66 square meters (typical set up 20 sq metre living room, 2 x 12 sq metre bedrooms and a 12 sq metre kitchen, 10 square meter bathroom.). The typical market value in Tartu is $59,500, to fulfil this criteria the appartment would need to sell for $47,520,

Should you still be interested in the project then your teams may begin ground work at your earliest convenience.

"We could potentially fulfil part of your needs." Mari began. "We operate both a heavy tank in the MBT-72 and also a liight tank in the shape of the LBT-8 We do have a small surplus of each but between the two could perhaps provide you with 60 tanks instantly. They are both older models than the Drenovian one and should you go with these then we'd offer the same support that Fabijan has just offered. Likewise we would not oppose the sale of Zarptica fighters to your nation and would invite pilots to come and train with our own if it helped you make the purchase."

12
First Minister Laine suspected that this could very well be the last treaty that King Karlis would get the chance to sign and this was one that probably meant more to the King than many. Laine stood, but only to help the King if needed. Karlis simply ploughed forward leaning on his polished black cane until he reached the table. He leaned the cable against the table and picked up the pen. "As a young man I know there were horrid things happening in my homeland and while many of those doing it are now long gone or similar in age to me that does not mean that justice still can not be done. This takes us a step closer." The King signed the document, placed the pen down and then retrieved his stick shaking hands with Laine as he resumed his seat.

13
The two Chistopolians turned their chairs away for a moment and exchanged words in a whisper. It was the First Minister who gave the nations answer. "Our government system would mean the Chamber of the People will need to sign off on it. The good news is that I know my own party will fully support this and as we have a majority in the Chamber I am extremely confident that I can give this my seal of approval."

Mari Sepp was pleased that they had secured the most important deal of getting trade access to Lijiang on what were great terms. It had cost a little more than had been expected perhaps but you have the speculate to accumulate, or so the phrase went. Now there was maybe a chance to accumulate some. "Now with the major decisions made of the relationship between SUN and Lijiang is there anything else that you'd like us to discuss?"

15
King Karlis finished reading the changes. He had liked the first draft and didn't have the same issues as Queen Atalanta did but at the same time he recognised that a balance between CNN and SUN existed with the Alanders a kind of inbetweeners who leaned towards the hosts. He didn't anticipate any big issues though. The King and his First Minister, Darijus Laine exchanged a quick series of discussions. The First Minister motioned to the King that he should feel free to address the group as Karlis knew it would be Darijus' job to push the treaty through the process back home. Karlis took a breath and using his stick pushed himself up right. "I had the misfortune to be a combatant in one of the wars that we are discussing crimes from. I think the chances of bringing anyone to justice from that conflict is minimal as they, like me, are getting on in years. This brings me to my question. You are asking us to use East Moreland as a prison for those found guilty potentially. You have insisted that it shall be what I imagine is an East Moreland military prison, can you perhaps explain why that was selected and what an old soldier such as me would experience if imprisoned?"

After Orlando returned it fell down to just Chistopol to determine the future of the project. Mari Sepp outlined the situation to the First Minister who had been waiting on any potential call. He had hoped for a simple trade deal but now something more complex was on the table. He gave it some thought for a while. On the one hand it was a costly deal but on the other it was potentially something that could open doors to a future powerhouse economy. There was money to be made and in the grand scheme of things $350million was not so big. With some moving around of figures and assets the government could find the money. With that in mind Laine gave Sepp permission to bring things to a conclusion. Having returned to the group following the phone call Mari smiled, "Ladies and Gentleman, Your Majesty, we have approval from First Minister Laine. I believe that means that we have an agreement."

17
At 90 years of age Karlis suspected there wouldn't be too many more overseas visits in an official capacity so when the invite from King David came he felt he had to go to East Moreland, especially because of the nature of the meeting. He had seen for himself what the Soviets had done to his homeland and even as they'd left in the late 1960's with their tail between their legs they'd poisioned livestock, destroyed buildings and even executed town and cities mayors and other officials.  While it would be Darijus Laine, the nations First Minister, who would make all the decisions, on this occasion the First Minister was certainly going to listen to the King. He had after all lived through the darkest part of the nations history and come out as a man respected by all, even a Republican like Laine.

Arriving at the Field of Greenflowers Karlis needed some help exiting the vehicle and once steady on his stick made his way towards King David. Switching his stick from one hand to the other he extended a rather shaky hand towards the Morelander. "Good morning King David" Karlis said warmly. "Thank you for giving us all an oppurtunity to meet with you on this matter. I'm excited to hear what you and King Piripi have been working on." The King greeted all the others as Laine introduced himself.

Mari Sepp was a little unsure of what should happen. On one hand her own nation of Chistopol was hopeful of rebuilding and investment in their own land however this provided perhaps an interesting oppurtunity. "For our own part I can not say for certain that we would be willing to spend $375 million on a project for another nation." She paused for a moment or two, " Yet I believe the project is a good deal for everyone involved. I think though I could better sell it to the people back home if one or two conditions are put in place. First is that any materials or machinery not avaliable in Lijiang for the construction process are purchased from one of our nations. To achieve this I think the second of our conditions is made. A new company should be formed, maybe with the name Lijiang International Ports Company, or something" she shrugged the name being less important than the concept. "Each nation is given on paper 25% of the shares in the name of their government. By setting up an actual business we can ensure better running of the facility."

Mari Sepp's husband, Luka, was the nominated chef. The grill was full of various cuts and types of meat while a long wooden table was home to a wide variety of salads, dips, even fries for people to help themselves to. "I hope the food will be ready shortly. In the meantime please relax, have a drink." Luka, a music teacher by trade, invited their high profile guests. Once everyone was settled and her husband could return to grill duties Mari began.

"Some time back we saw Her Majesty Queen Atlanta initiate contact between us and yourself." She addressed the Dragon-Emperor directly. "We understand that you are kind of torn between some kind of trade deal with ourselves or full membership. Naturally I'm bias and think you should sign up but of course you'll have your own mind when it comes to doubts. Could you perhaps explain what's making you hesitate about becoming the fifth member of SUN."

It was obvious there was a gulf still between them. It was perhaps a gulf formed by their similarities of being nations undergoing change. Laine had the impression the Pharoah had come looking for a Chistopolian presence in Setri but any funds the nation had would be ploughed into their own interests for now. "It would appear that we are left then with an agreement to share intelligence about potential Soviet threats. I will however need to go on the record saying that while we have similar agreements with our SUN friends, Waddan and the Bene Gesserit we will only share that with their consent. Beyond that can you think of any other arrangements that we can bring about today?"

There had been preparationary talks between various members of SUN and Lijiang but to date no agreements had been made. It was for this reason Mari Sepp, the Chistopol ambassador to SUN, had convened a BBQ at her home in Golgagra close to the HQ building. She had invited the three other ambassadors as well as various other members of the SUN team. An invitation had been sent to the Dragon-Emperor himself or one of his representatives. The BBQ itself had been lit and the ambassadors staff had cold drinks ready for when the guests arrived.

The talks would be informal at first, their task was simple gauge Lijiang's interest in their organisation. They believed that the Dragon-Emperor would fall short of fully joining the organisation but perhaps they could get them to accept some economic arrangements that could be of use to them all as the Lijiang market was potentially huge and untapped in many regards. Adding to SUN's membership was a long term aim of the body but today would perhaps not be that day.

The latest comments from Akasha highlighted the distance in world view that had changed in Clysperis. Neither of her points made sense to Laine, Bakkermaya had pointed out a proposal as being a violation of a treaty formulated by Rokkenjima meanwhile their friend Atlanta had submitted a formal letter of protest in the way embassies were designed to be used for. It perhaps signalled that Clysperis was not going to be the nation they had expected. Not that they had intended to but it was clear that Clysperis wouldn't be getting an invite to the SUN BBQ's anytime soon.

Instead Laine turned his answer to Tartu. "In Tartu we have a city that the Soviets attempted to cripple as they left, soil damaged, infastructure neglected and in some cases destroyed. It took us many years to ensure that the plumbing worked, the electric came on and trains ran on time. The problem is we've still got homes designed round the prospect of packing people in like sardines. Add to that the fact the cities industry was rather on the heavy side, doing the jobs the Soviets didn't want messing up their own cities. Those industries are today unwanted within a city itself but we've little choice. We're going to diversify, create green spaces and aim to create a green city. We're fortunate that our friends in Cassiopeia have good experience with such things, as does Drenovia. We're hopefully soon seeing further moves within SUN that will create more modern jobs here." he concluded.

On behalf of the Kingdom of Chistopol we are happy to extend an invitation to visit us with a view to helping Diamond Farm Labs establish an enterprise in our nation. We welcome foreign investment, especially in areas where we ourselves lack the required knowledge, skill or resources. As such your project sounds intriguing and Prince Motiejus would be delighted to host you at his estate in the countryside where Prime Minister Laine will arrange for a member of his cabinet to join you and discuss the finer details. We hope this is acceptable.

Isoldine complete tests and Tuxfa hit landmark

The Chistopol based company Isoldine have completed the test of the software designed for the Zarptica Fighter project. The system was fitted to a F-3 Fantomex fighter and completed 100 hours of successful flight. The software will manage all the systems of the aircraft and is the first international collaboration.

Meanwhile Tuxfa have successfully tested ejector seats and other survival equipment which will be used for the project. This development marks a landmark in the Zarptica project as over half the developments required have now been tested individually.

The membership of SUN was down to Laine and he was confident in the organisations future. "We founded SUN to ensure that nations who wished their own systems to be sovereign over their own people could. We've seen too many of these so called international organisations be used by the larger powers of the world to benefit themselves. Be it Achkaerin taking years to bring Cartier to justice, nations signing the MAEA only to negotiate deals contrary to it or even the FSC being a political football. It is hard for smaller nations to be protected against such over-reach and hopefully the SUN gives nations with similar beliefs a chance to join together and stand against such things. In addition it allows us to form co-operative projects without being beholden to these so called world powers."

It seemed like Akasha was about to make a sales pitch for Setri. It was something that would largely not be of use to Laine. "I've read about Setri, I think its an interesting project. Tartu is a similar attempt by ourselves. We're trying to modernise the city and remove the strench of the Soviets. For now our efforts are directed there much as yours are at Setri."

Laine thought for a moment, "Beyond our, lets say interactions, with the Soviets I don't think there is a great deal that connects our nations. We see our future in a split between closer ties with those sharing our Rus heritage around the sea, additionally we believe that for too long a handful of nations have dictated the future of Mundus geo-politics. We see that being where SUN comes in. If we're honest we see your situation as confusing. On one hand you've a tie my marriage to Tamora but the recent aid from Achkaerin suggests a tie to those powers we established SUN to protect ourselves from. We would therefore not want to tie ourselves to anything too prescriptive at this point as we wish to gain a better insight into what you think your long term future is. So we'd be comfortable extending a statement of mutual friendship, the establishment of a network of some kind to share intelligence about Soviet activities and perhaps potentially an invitation to have access to jointly developed SUN military projects."

Liane was forced to consider however whether the agreement with Waddan and the Theocracy would truly last long enough to reap any benefit. With the Sultan ill and the nature of Waddan it was likely they may need to do it all over again if anything were to happen to the Sultan. The Pharoah hadn't given anything away with her assessment of the arrangement at the tri-nation conferences outcome and this put Laine at somewhat of a cross roads as to which way to go. He could of course make an offer of some kind of agreement between the two, or on the other hand see what the Pharoah wanted. "The agreement with those nations stands of course alongside our commitment to the charter of the Sovereign Union of Nations, an arrangement that will see four of us, ourselves, Paracambi, Drenovia and Cassiopeia work together to resist pressures when applied by what you've described as "great powers". To be truthful though we suspect there will not be a challenge from the Soviets for a great time if ever at all. They are fewer in number in terms of states than previously. They've just escaped a messy Civil War in Kaitaine that shows even among their own ranks they have enemies and they now face a unified buffer area. I think in months to come we will be casting our eyes Northwards towards the Sea to our North," he purposely refused to use the word Rodinian Sea, "where our ethnic cousins live. So perhaps we should begin discussing where you would like the relationship between our two nations to head."

Darijus was savvy enough to know that in the 21st Century and thanks to social media and the like there was no longer such thing as "Domestic news". Every word , every action a nations leader took was poured over not just at home but by people across the world. It would, or at least should, have crossed the Phraroahs mind that her words would be heard in Chistopol and across the region, but he suspected that was the point. By speaking the way she had it had earned her a meeting here and perhaps a foot in the door. Not a delicate foot but more a huge boot that in Darijus' mind was largely unwelcome.

Likewise Karlis was not naive enough to accept at face value that flattery was in fact statement of fact. As a hopefully good host though the King merely smiled. "Well it is nice to know that that our actions got someones attention. Thank You" The King responded as Darijus for once was content to let royals dominate the discussion for he knew later that it would be him who would handle the vast majority of talking for Chistopol. "For our part you must understand there was no snub. The conference was determined by geography, as your nation lays some 1000km[1] to the West you were outside what I suppose you could consider a buffer zone between the Soviets and the rest of Aranye. The conference was a mere first step towards keeping the Soviets were they are."

"And now we face an issue of the second step being a little trickier" the First Minister added.

"Now , now Darijus I'm sure we can overcome." The King had begun heading towards the waiting car, the gentle tap of his cane on concrete accompanying them. "Beside we can't start off with bad thoughts, we need to give you congratulations on your recent marriage." The King smiled as he waved one of his courtiers forward with a cloth covered item. "On behalf of our people we wish you a long and happy marriage." The King motioned for the lady to hand Seti the item but she kept hold of the cloth unveiling it with a kind of magicians flourish. "In our faith we believe three children were born to the Sun and Moon. Each child established rules for our life, we though think Dievas was the most righteous. The statue shows him as the largest but intertwined with his siblings, Triglav and Dodola. On happy occasions such as yours a statue like this is presented to show love, be it in marriage, a parent for a child, or brother for a sister has no start and no end."

Darijus was no spiritual man. He occasionally said prayers to Deivas but rarely, he was respectful of religion though and envied anyone who had the passion and commitment to such things. "If you'd care to board the car." He invited the guests as he himself took a seat. The ride from the airport was a in Darijus' eyes a little of a disgrace for his nation. The city of Tartu was still full of neglected high raises and ramshackle flats of glass monstrosities, still very much a Soviet city. However as you got closer to the heart of the city more modernisation had taken place. "I hope you approve of our choice of venue." Darijus couldn't help but look out the window as they neared. The Sisterhood's Library came into view. "We thought we would use our own pyramid, not as large perhaps as your own. It was originally built to house the Soviet Ministry of Defence and Security. It was recently opened as a library and education centre after the Bene Gesserit asked for permission to take it over. With a significant Bene Gesserit population we saw it as no different to a temple or church being built and its become a favourite building of mine." Children played in the pools that surrounded the pyramid shaped building, splashing in the inch or so deep water that recycled through fountains. The trees had long since lost their leaves with only a few dark red ones hanging on valiantly. Several blue jacketed members of the Bene Gesserit Missionara that ran the library could be seen and a group of security staff moved to make a path through for the King and his foreign guests.

Once inside an elevator took them to the top floor which overlooked one of the capitals many parks. That was perhaps the only positive of soviet occupation, upon their exit they had destroyed large parts of the city which had given the nations urban planners a chance to create a city with leisure space at its heart. At the top of the pyramid was a round conference room where normally academic talks would be held but today would be different. Once the door had been shut Darijius pulled out the chair of Akasha and allowed her to take a seat before moving to his own chair 90 degrees to her right. "I suppose a decent place to start Your Majesty would be to look at what you think of our arrangement with the Theocracy and Waddan?"

Darijus Laine had been rather annoyed when he had heard what Pharaoh  had said to her own media, she spoke with a lack of apparent knowledge of Chistopols own conflict but when you had the arrogance to call yourself "Sovereign of Sovereigns" perhaps it was permissable to not know much of other nations. That hadn't stopped the First Minister extending an invitation. His dislike of royalty was well known, he didn't believe anyone who just so happened to have popped out the correct vagina should be entitled to rule over people's lives. It was bad enough having to negotiate day to day business with the family of King Kārlis IV, but at least the King was content to act in a mere role as a figurehead with only seemingly small trappings of power. It was Crown Prince Kārlis who was the thorn in his side and so the First Minister was pleased when at Tartu airport the King had arrived.

King Kārlis IV was soon to turn 90 years of age and having spent all but three months of his life as King of his nation he had known a life of service. Today he was a man smaller than he had been in his prime but even after his knees had stiffened, his back begun to bend he still insisted on climbing out his car unaided except for the polished black wood walking stick. "Good morning Darijus" The King extended an arthritic hand to his First Minister.

"Good Morning Your Majesty" Darijus responded with politeness but no bow. "I wasn't sure whether you or your son would come today."

"I think it important if a monarch is visiting I dust off my diplomatic skills." The King smiled. "Beside I'm not letting him have all the diplomatic adventures. I felt rather sad I missed Waddan."

"It was different to say the least" Darijus had to admit the meeting had gone better than expected. "Has anyone used that saddle yet?" The Minister asked in regards to the Royal Families gift from the Sultan.

"Young  Princess Jana has been casting envious eyes on it." The Kings eight year old grand-daughter was turning into somewhat of a horse-woman and no doubt would take over the royal stables at some point. "It seems the day is about to begin." The King added as he spotted the visitors aircraft arriving. As if by some process of magic the King seemed to grow a few inches as his ancient spine seemed to stretch as his posture miracously improved and it seemed almost as though his cane was not needed.
