Duke of Tartu
The only child of King Kārlis and his first wife Queen Kaia he was born during the middle of the wars to gain the nation freedom from the Communist occupation in 1956. He spent his early years constantly moving with a bodyguard of Royal Guardsman to try and keep him away from potential danger. He saw very little of his father during his childhood and saw Lt-Col Valter Kalniņš as a father figure as he commanded the detachment tasked with protecting the young Prince. Unfortunately in 1960 while travelling between safe houses the convoy he was travelling in was hit by a Kaitaine air strike which killed his mother. The Prince survived but he lost the sight in his left eye which in 1970 at the age of 14 was removed and replaced with a glass eye.
While the nation had seen the Communist begin leaving from 1966 the King was concerned about the future of the crown and whether the citizens of Chistopol would accept the royal family back in a leadership role. This saw him maintain a strong loyal guard around his son but with a team of four tutors. His lack of public education and constant moving around the nation meant that he struggled to form friendships and today many who meet him consider him rather cold.
From 1980 onwards he was made the Duke of Tartu, the nations capital, and a title traditionally given to the heir to the throne. He began work in the Ministry of Defence as civil servant and actually showed a flair for cold and calculated management. He brought a good level of efficency to his department and quickly was put in charge of the management of the Ministry of Defences administration. His father tried encouraging him to seek a position within the democractically elected government however he refused believing that as his father was pushing more power to the citizens the sight of him within the Chamber of the People would send a negative message. Instead until 2001 and remained quietly organising the Ministry behind the scenes.
In 2001 he began experiencing vision problems in his good eye and spent time in Lodja being treated and was fortunate enough to have his vision saved. He was however convinced that he would lose his vision and so taught himself braille in preparation being determined to return to his department within the Ministry of Defence. Upon returning to Chistopol he established a school for children with disabilities of which he has been the Principle of since its formation.
In 1978 he married Tatiana Šimonis who was the daughter of one of his tutors whom he was introduced to at a hunting weekend. The pair have never really been exceptionally close and are very rarely seen in public together. The now Princess Tatiana has given them two sons Prince Bruno (b.1979) and Prince Jaguup (b.1983) however he is a rather distant father to them preferring to spend time in his office. Prince Bruno has two children Princess Ingrid (b.2008) and Princess Jannika (b. 2011). Prince Jaguup has two children Prince Tarmo (b.2009) and Princess Jana (b.2013).
With his father now getting old in years there is a growing expectation that Crown Prince Kārlis will have to begin taking over more royal duties but he has to this point been reluctant to do so.
