Forum Administration / Future Website Outage
« on: February 19, 2020, 04:55:42 PM »
Hi all,

From about 10pm tonight, I will be moving the forum over to CloudFlare in order to counter the drastic increase in the annoying bots that are crawling through the website.

There shouldn't be an extended outage, though the site may go down for a couple of hours as namservers switch over.

Kind regards,
CGJ

Forum Administration / Website outage
« on: January 28, 2020, 10:04:16 PM »
Hi all,

As most of you will be aware, we suffered a major multi-day outage this week. As the administrator (and it is literally my only job here) I wanted to be open and transparent about what happened, why, and what’s now in place.

To be clear: this was in no way related to a hack or data breach; no personal data has been affected by this week’s events.

So, what happened?

For my current employer, we are holding a conference and I volunteered to run the website. The website is hosted on the same account as TIO. Tickets for this event were released yesterday.

We had very high demand on the website from approx 10:50 onwards. Despite having used the hosting provider for almost 10 years, I'd never experienced the (still relatively low compared to what Glastonbury gets!) demand that the ticket registration generated. The website hosting plan, which cost about £4 a month, was not enough.

During frantic discussions with the hosting provider, we moved to a dedicated hosting platform at a slightly higher cost of $20 per month. Credit to the support team who did this in about half an hour.

All should be back to normal. There was a teething error as I had to point some of the internal addresses to new places as the paths had changed.

So once again apologies for the inconvenience. Please let me know if you notice any new issues.

Thanks,
C

Statement on Alucard Sovereignty Claims

His Majesty's Government formally notes that the Kingdom of Dartfordia will not be recognising the Confederation of Water Nomads, nor any of its tribes, as a sovereign entity.

While the Government fully supports the right to self-determination, the islands claimed by the Confederation are regarded by Dartfordia as being part of the long-term sovereign territory of the Empires of Paracambi and Bakkermaya. This is therefore an internal matter for the respective governments.

Royal Dartfordian Press Office

Statement on the Recent Agreement by the First Empire of Rokkenjima and the Holy Kingdom of Cabbagelandiet

His Majesty’s Government formally notes its concern between the recent deal agreed between the First Empire of Rokkenjima and the Holy Kingdom of Cabbagelandiet, and its obligations to the members and associate members of the Treaty of Unity for Alucard Nations (TUNA).

The First Empire has announced, without any prior consultation from either the First Empire or the Holy Kingdom, that they have ‘purchased’ the investment grant given to the Holy Kingdom by the member and associate nations of TUNA. This grant, which was used for the significant development of the Holy Kingdom’s largest port, was not a traditional loan, but rather a form of payment-in-kind. This enabled businesses and entrepreneurs to invest in the Holy Kingdom in exchange for a free rate on customs and port fees until the fees and duties added up to the cost of the grant. This was felt by both the Holy Kingdom and the member and associate member nations of TUNA as a fair and reasonable investment in the Holy Kingdom’s economy.

We are therefore seeking reassurances from the Holy Kingdom that the recent agreement will not jeopardise businesses and entrepreneurs in favour of those from a non-Albion and non-Alucard nation. We may be willing to consider allowing the Dartfordian share of the investment grant to be invested in other regenerative projects, but seek assurances from the Holy Kingdom that the terms of access for the original agreement are honoured.

Office of the Chancellory / Statement on the Founder Account
« on: January 15, 2019, 09:29:21 PM »
Earlier today I was alerted on Discord to the fact that the founder account, Littlebrook, had ceased to exist. I took immediate action and ensured that founder access was fully restored to that account.

Maintaining founder account access is essential in securing the region and protecting it against the risks of raiding, I can only apologise to members of the Independent Order that this occurred.

I have reviewed the account settings and it appears no email account was associated with it, hence why I did not receive a reminder from NationStates. I have now added an email account to ensure this incident does not occur again.

Jonathan Lankly, the Dartfordian Foreign Secretary, who had totally been in the room from the start, had shared similar concerns as Roman. "Our predecessors passed the Environment and Climate Change Act 2015, which was ambitious in the powers it gives the government and the targets it sets. We have already introduced a levy on plastic bags and straws. We currently have a Green investment Bank, so would be willing to support the Environmental Bank. We would therefore be happy to sign this treaty."

Location: Queen Katenka Naval Base, Dartfordia
Time: 25 December, 19:20 AST

It had been another week in Dartfordia, Beatrice working in visits in between her schedule as time permitted, but victory was finally hers. Well, if one could term it that way, but she felt at least one area of her life was being restored.

“I can’t believe I’m letting you do this,” Alex murmured as the car carrying the couple to the Rokkenjiman naval base in Arendelle, the city of the former headquarters of the Cross-Straits Union. The two had spent a festive morning with the Royal Family at Winchester, first a Church service, then a grand feast. The feast was full of turkey, trimmings, stuffing, potatoes, parsnips, Yorkshire puddings, and, at least for Alex, lots and lots of gravy. It was both an annual get-together and a family send off for the pair, who were being driven to Dartfordia's busiest port.

“It’s only been what, 2 years?” Beatrice smirked at him, giving his hand a squeeze as the car rolled to a halt. The pair got out, greeted by a couple members of the grew in the distance. Otherwise, they were alone - a contrast to the usual fanfare that accompanied their arrival aboard the vessel.

Alex paused at the foot of the gangway, staring up towards the ship that had, on many occasions, served as a second home for many years. Yet not in recent times. Austrana had reminded him instantly of Rokkenjima, and of his actions, or inaction, during the Andean Genocide - and he had not since returned.

Beatrice placed her arms on his hips, leaning into him from behind. The time she had spent with Alex, the hours of talking and working through the fears and doubts which had weighed so heavily upon him, "...I'll exorcise the demons from your past..." she sang delicately into his ear.

“Your overuse of Muse songs is endearing,” he whispered, briefly leaning back into her before stepping forward towards the ship. Beatrice followed just a few moments later.

Austrana’s first destination would be Azukishima, so Beatrice could offer him an exclusive peek at the new headquarters of the Cross-Straits Union, ahead its official opening in January. Following their visit they would return to Pyrettania via train, finishing with a drive to Pyrena Castle. As what some, including a couple of mean-spirited journalists, would call his ‘bail conditions’, Alex would only be known by his royal Dartfordian title: His Royal Highness the Prince of Littlebrook.

The weight of his behaviour years earlier still haunted him, and the prospect of another political scandal terrified the Dartfordian Government. He would only perform personal, charitable and the occasional ceremonial duties. Awaiting them upon their arrival to Pyrena Castle would be Euphy, Evanthe (visiting from Somerset), and Lucinda Hadley (visiting from Achkaerin).

With the low-key festive welcomining party behind them, the couple would spend a few days recuperating with Adriana and Lucius, before Beatrice embarks on two diplomatic talks, traveling via the Austrana with Alexander remaining aboard. "You may at least enjoy the sights and sounds with me,” she told him as they agree the plans, “and I'm sure we can make each voyage more than memorable."

The engines flared into life as the couple wondered up towards the stern of the ship. As Dartfordia began to slip beyond the horizon, the two held each other as they sailed towards their new life. “Merry Christmas, Bea,” Alex whispered, before they turned in for the evening.

We were founded in 1603 as the Gardner and Williamson Wagonway Company, and in our 400-year history have led the world in railway technology.

We would be interested in the partial acquisition of the National Rail & Omnibus Corporation (NROC). Specifically, National Rail passenger and freight services , subject to an assessment of the viability of the Euirasian rail industry.

Diplomacy and Events / Re: An Invitation to the Kingdom of Dartfordia
« on: August 07, 2018, 02:04:36 AM »
"We refer only to the Toshindai genocide as a matter of international perception. Dartfordia has never taken the view that Rokkenjima was complicit in the genocide, we understand the specific nuances behind it - but ultimately public perception of the genocide is one that has been difficult to shake. We hope, however, that today's talks mark a change in actions and perceptions."

Lankly took a moment to consider the Akrotiri proposals, flicking through his information stack, before producing the current fleet size. "Okay, we presently have 1 amphibious assault ship, 3 destroyers, 3 frigates, 3 submarines, 1 icebreaker, 1 survey vessel and 1 patrol boat. A total of 13 ships, well...12 as the patrol boat is about the size of this room. The patrol boat is used to support the local fishing economy as an immediate first-responder, and essentially replaced the Rokkejiman patrol service already based in Akrotiri, so we'll leave those out of the equation if we may. We propose a reduction of 4 ships, the amphibious assault ship and one of the frigates, submarines and destroyers. We would be...uncomfortable lowering the numbers below 8 as it would render the base almost entirely unviable for us."

Finally, he added, "with regards to ground rent, we are prepared to accept the maintenance of the existing ground rent. With Dartfordian ships joining the Kyne Fleet, we would also wish to ensure there was some co-operation at operations level as you suggested. But yes, lunch."

The Dartfordian delegate stood. "I'd like to thank my Achkaerinese colleague for raising this issue. Critically on the point of the referendum, we believe that the following conditions should be added: First, that the referendum is held by secret ballot, and second, that multiple referendums may be held on the same day and under the same terms. We wholeheartedly agree with the remainder of the proposal."

Diplomacy and Events / Re: An Invitation to the Kingdom of Dartfordia
« on: August 06, 2018, 03:06:31 PM »
Lankly listened to Beatrice’s concerns, comparing them with the information he had before him. “Right,” he began, conferring with Bradbrook for about 30 seconds before continuing. “We are maintaining our current offer - a maximum of 36 Rokkenjiman ships to be based in Dartfordia at any one time in accordance with the restrictions set out. If Rokkenjima wishes to add more ships to the Kyne fleet from Rokkenjima or another non-Dartfordian base, we are not going to prohibit that, but we cannot make any guarantee that vessels departing from the Kyne fleet will get any automatic right to utilise Katenka or Dartfordian ports without the explicit consent of the Dartfordian government.

“Our offer of Darfordian ships in the Kyne fleet stands,” he paused, “and we would be willing to contribute 1 Dartfordian amphibious assault ship to be used exclusively for humanitarian purposes. In terms of aircraft carriers, aircraft and helicopters can be dispatched from regular aircraft carriers - therefore having 1 Rokkenjiman and 1 Dartfordian provides more than enough support for the fleet.

“You speak of powers crying out for Rokkenjima to do more - yet the last few years have seen a complete collapse in trust in Rokkenjima. From being complicit in a genocide to throwing yourselves head first into the Barnacle island debacle, Rokkenjima has done little to mitigate against the growing threats in the world, leaving a power vacuum that has been exploited, but which the world is now moving on from. Take TUNA for example, the the Sea of Alucard was traditionally dominated by the Kyne fleet’s anti-piracy operations, with each respective nation only covering their home turf, yet now this huge area of open water is being maintained and patrolled by local nations working in co-operation.”

57
Diplomacy and Events / Re: An Invitation to the Kingdom of Dartfordia
« on: August 06, 2018, 01:44:39 AM »
Lankly smiled and took a quick glance at his proposal. “We respect the Rokkenjiman position, and thank you for your proposals. We understand your concerns, particularly with regards to the developing risks abroad, we do also recognise the wider role Rokkenjiman ships have in deterring piracy and humanitarian aid.” He shifted in his chair. “However,” he lowered his tone slightly, “despite the vast capabilities of the Kyne fleet, it appears to get involved in very little. We see, 2 or 3 major uses for the fleet per year. This could easily be achieved by a smaller and more agile fleet.

“Second, Katenka is located next to the largest cruise terminal in Dartfordia, yet due to the huge number of Rokkenjiman ships from this one fleet - almost 50% larger than the entire Dartfordian Navy based at 4 separate ports - it is hogging the shipping lanes. Katenka separates the terminal from the ocean, forcing - when being used by the base - ships to travel around the base’s shipping lanes and in to the shipping lanes for Burnham. This was fine before 2014, when the Dartfordian Navy based only 15-20 ships there, and all movements were at night, but with 78 ships it is unsustainably disruptive. Cruise traffic has declined 10% in Arendelle, and the city has gone from a high reliability rate to worst of any major port on Albion besides Uppsala.

“Now this proposal takes your concerns regarding aircraft carriers and a significantly reduced Kyne fleet in to account. And below each one will be how many Dartfordian ships we will commit to the Kyne fleet, but will be based in another naval base.

“This reduces the total Katenka fleet from 78 to 36 ships, a reduction of 42. This allows the base to reduce its usage of the shipping lanes, and limit movements to off-peak periods where possible. However, 12 Dartfordian ships will join the Kyne fleet, allowing for 48 ships in the Kyne fleet - a reduction of only 30 ships.[1]

“As for the increase in ground rent, we would be willing to accept half the proposed amount to be put in a special community fund designated for Arendelle.” Lankly sat back and sighed, rubbing his eyes. “You see…the world is changing, Beatrice. You have spent a long time out of the action, and the world has quickly moved on from the days of the Rokkenjiman superpower. Albion ad Alucard nations are coming together, forging closer and more practical alliances, alliances that we want to be a part of. A huge stumbling block is the strong presence of Rokkenjima…to them, Dartfordia is sometimes seen as your Trojan horse.”

Lankly arrived on board the Estvua with the Cabinet Secretary, the most senior official and the principal adviser to the Prime Minister, Sir Ethan Bradbrook. They were both very aware of developments in Rokkenjima, both in terms of the Imperial Council and the Diet, and were prepared for an intense period of negotiation.  The Prime Minister had been spoken to, as had a number of other senior Cabinet members, and a general position on the day’s talks had been established.

Lankly and Bradbrook sat down opposite the Empress, politely accepting more traditional breakfast tea. Beatrice’s talk began as they expected, and they were encouraged by her position on Barnacle and Nurashima. The issues with Adriana were not a top priority, they were relatively uncaring about what she got up to so long as she didn’t embarrass the government or the Crown. The two men were, however, slightly thrown out by the proposal for some random mansion to be converted into a homeless shelter and quidditch facility.

“Uh, right,” Lankly begun, watching the screens repeat reports from Rokkenjiman and Dartfordian media outlets. “Well thank you for hosting us,” he said, “we are certainly pleased with the progress made yesterday and of course the adoption of a new policy towards the disputed Mhorish Sea islands. I think the new Rokkenjiman position is one that better reflects what you and your country historically sought to pursue in international affairs. I also hope Adriana has an enjoyable time, though my personal advice for letting kids go to festivals is,” he had a wry smile, “let them explore on their own.

“Anyway,” he continued, quickly taking a moment to check notes with Bradbrook, “we are certainly interested in considering the mansion idea, though that would require further time as we would have to prepare a report on the matter. I think perhaps we should consider some areas where are likely to have some disagreement. Now one of the fundamental concerns that the government, and indeed many people in this country, have is that the Kyne Fleet based at Katenka is too big. So big, in fact, that Rokkenjima has more destroyers and frigates based in Dartfordia than Dartfordia has destroyers and frigates. There are also concerns about the types of ships, like aircraft carriers, amphibious assaults ships and nuclear submarines, which are all from time to time based at Katenka.

“We’d therefore like to see a reduction in the overall number of ships permanently based in Katenka, based on the following numbers:” He handed a list over to Beatrice.

“We are willing, of course, to listen to any alternative proposals - and Rokkenjima may on a temporary basis increase their presence at the base with the consent of our government. This may also provide an opportunity for Dartfordian ships to group with Rokkenjiman ones in the Kyne and Alucard, to provide numbers for anticipated Rokkenjiman reductions.”

Police Discover LSD in Train Driver’s Imodium Tablets

Police have today revealed that they discovered the hallucinogenic drug LSD in the OsmanTech Imodium tablets, commonly used to counter the symptoms of diarrhoea, carried by Thomas Moran. Moran was discovered laying by the trackside after he was removed from the cab of his train, he had a faultless record and showed no signs or symptoms of depression. Police have confirmed they had already discovered traces of the drug in Moran’s bloodstream, and now believe that the man jumped while hallucinating.

Prior to departing Berk station, Moran was seen purchasing the drug from a shop outside the station and heading directly to the platform. The journey between Berk and Muntz takes approximately 45 minutes, and he was found approximately 10 minutes away from Muntz station. Police believe he took the drug shortly after departing Berk, as the packaging was left on the dashboard of the train.

Earlier today the CEO of OsmanTech issued an apology on behalf of the company. The government have ordered that all OsmanTech Imodium tablets be destroyed and have temporarily revoked its licence to sell the drug. Intelligence agencies

Moran is survived by is wife, Marie, and two children, Michael and Reggie. A memorial will be installed on behalf of HawleyConnect and the National Railway Union (NRU) at the site where he died.

Controversy over Empress’ Rogue Visit

Following reports that the government were considering the closure of Queen Katenka Naval Base in Arendelle, the Empress of Rokkenjima made what appears to be an emergency visit to the Dartfordian capital. Prime Minister Daniel Cleaver had only left that morning for a walking holiday in Lodja, and reports from sources close to the government suggest the move has infuriated the Foreign Minister, John Lankly.

The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed Cleaver would not be returning to Dartfordia early, though has been in touch with officials and the Foreign Secretary to confirm the government’s position. It’s likely the government will be seeking a very high price to make up for recent grievances, which include the use of Princess Adriana in negotiations with East Moreland and the recognition of Heyran sovereignty over the Nurashima/Barnacle islands. Initial reports indicated the government were planning on maintaining the base as a Dartfordian one, but recent proposals from Duchess Ekaterina Stasiuk have sparked interest amongst senior officials.

While a new co-operation treaty is expected to be signed, the government may refuse to commit to securing the future of QKNB. The move may be popular amongst the National Party’s traditional support base, many of whom opposed the construction of the base itself, as well as many on the left opposed to the use of the base for weapons of mass destruction. In Arendelle, a city transformed by the former presence of the Cross-Straits Union, opinion is mixed, with about 40% of respondents preferring the base to be replaced with a resort, 40% preferring to maintain the base and 20% unsure. However a strong preference exists towards building a more accessible resort, with a Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Disneyland and a theme park preferred over a luxury yacht resort.

The Mayor of Arendelle, Michelle Lamb, told DBC that the CSU leaving ‘left a presently unfulfilled hole in the Arendelle economy’, and that replacement of the base could result in ‘greater economic development.’ She refused, however, to indicate her preference, saying that she ‘was open to proposals on all sides.’
