LATEST THING SELECTED

This morning the selection of the nations latest Thing was undertaken at the Palace of the Thing. The first stage of the process saw the outgoing Thing appoint Mathilda Ekdal as the Law-Speaker for the next six months. The 42 year old is a legal secretary and has been involved in a great many of the debates in the previous Thing and has lead moves to protect the environment of the islands as well as ensuring that health care is more easily accessible. Ekdal originally came from the Isle of Hornstrandir but moved to Koltur to pursue a legal career. She has now served in two Things, the first time at the age of 24. The new Law-Speaker said "I'm glad to be given this title and have the trust of the people. I'm looking forward to an exciting six months and hope that we can achieve a lot." Following the appointment of Ekdal the other 280 members of The Thing were selected. As usual there was immediate scrutiny of the list to see if any well known names had made it into service. Among them was prominent religious figure Gothi Ludwig Augustinsson who has written a series of books on the Odinist faith's history he will be joined on the list by 23 year old IFK Koltur goalkeeper Orvar Bergmark. It is understood that with the Mundus games on the horizon Bergmark may ask for a Presidential Exemption on the grounds that serving in The Thing may have a negative impact on his career.  It is unknown whether President Grimwal will grant this as it is a situation that has not come up before. The 2nd Thing of 2020 will now have 72 hours to report to the Palace of the Thing to be sworn in. Out of the 280 names drawn 17 are resident in Nya Aland and 3 in Lodja all of whom will be expected to arrive in Koltur in the coming days. Anyone failing to arrive will have a warrant issued for their arrest and should they enter Runavik they'd be arrested and face a fine and time in prison.

President Grimwal stood outside the Palace and addressed the outgoing Thing to thank them for their service, "As you return to your daily lives the nation thanks you for your efforts over the last six months. We wish you all the best and hope that the incoming group are capable of building upon the foundations you have created for them.  I look forward to working with Mathilda Ekdal as Law-Speaker and between us I hope we can form an agenda to see us become a nation with a brighter future. I'll be meeting with the cabinet later today to ensure they are ready to brief the incoming members of The Thing and to form the new committees. It is vital we all hit the ground running as several pieces of legislation such as the Rural Health Care Act are in the middle of their drafting and should be a priority for completion."

One of the first tasks for the new Thing will be to approve the appointment of a new Minister of Education. The former Minister, Steven Ryskim resigned a month ago to take up a role in the Ambassadorial Corps and President Grimwal wished to wait for the new Thing to be formed in order to allow them to approve the new Minister. It is expected that the President will announce his choice before the Thing are sworn in.

"NOT A SINGLE ROCK" SAYS PRESIDENT

Following the public announcement by a group calling itself the "Holy Council" that they are claiming three Runavik islands as the "Cross Island Republic of Gungniröar" President Tobin Grimwal of Runavik has responded saying that "Those islands are part of Runavik, they are part of our people's heritage and birthrite. Long standing traditions and international laws recognise the island chain running South West from Albion as being our islands and we shall see none of them taken from us, not a single rock. Those islands may be unoccupied but they are cared for. Our navy maintains a watch over them, we help protect the wildlife on land, sea and air that call them home and in many cases these islands have infastructure that we put in place to try and help those Runaviks living there. A nation does not exist just because some area of land can have a new flag planted on it. What is to happen next, some unoccupied Alpine peak in East Moreland becomes a nation because no one lives there, or someone walks into an empty house in Achkaerin and claims it belongs to them. These things can not be allowed to happen."

It is understood that as of yet the numbers of those on the islands concerned have yet to be determined and some believe that no one is on at least two of them at all. One Marine biologist who often works around the islands stated, "Two of the islands, Ungbarnaklettur and even more so Faðirrokk, are extremely difficult to imagine living on full time. There is no real access to Ungbarnaklettur except a hard difficult rock climb and most people who visit do so by helicopter to avoid this. The island has no shelter and the harsh southern seas batter it daily. Meanwile Faðirrokk is not even really an island, it is more a stone stack about 40 square meters in area. Anyone claiming it as a nation is frankly in my view insane." The idea however of claiming uninhabited rocks as a nation is not new on Mundus with the terrorist group known as the Borlanders from East Moreland once claiming a now destroyed rock called High Rock as a nation before it was destroyed by the Morelanders. Our head of international politics believes that the international community should respond in a similar manner to the High Rock incident saying, "While the government have yet to work out who these people are, how many there are and whether there is any other land being occupied among the hundreds of small islands it is important people perhaps plan for the worse. I would be surprised to see any nation, unless they have a warped agenda, supporting this so called new nation."

It is expected that The Thing will begin discussions on action to take about the incident.

RECYCLING THE UNWANTED

The Antalin Ocean is home to several hundred small islands coughed up by volcanoes during the birth of Mundus. Over the millions of years our planet has existed the world has moved to form the land masses that are now familiar on the pages of any atlas you can buy. This process though has not always been kind to the islands of the southern seas and while Runavik appears to have won the lottery in terms of claiming the number of islands they are a nation that has given up conquering the harsh conditions of these southern islands. As such out of the approximately 100 islands that the Demarchic Republic of Runavik claim only around 70% of them are actually lived upon. Despite the bravery of what they call the Grand Experiment of the 1950's which saw attempts to ensure every island was colonised they failed. Today islands such as Ungbarnaklettur, Faðirrokk and Vestmanna have been empty of human life for at least 19 years and in the case of Faðirrokk they have never seen human life reside there.

It was in the face of this abandonment that the Interim President of the Cross-Islands Republic, Elvar Odinsson took action. "While Runavik is seen as a place of freedoms and democracy it is also a place that has created a fear among some. What was historically a strong hold of the Odinist faith is becoming soft and those who have hearts that yearn to live closer to the old Gods feel that we no longer have a place within this ever liberalising society. We therefore found ourselves with uncertain voices. The Runavik form of government while on the surface seems fair also denies people a voice. A person can only have their voice heard if they, or someone they are personally connected to is lucky enough to be permitted to serve on The Thing, meaning thousands have no one who shares their views, sometimes for years on end. As such we, the people of Gungniröar (translates as the Gungnir Islands) saw an oppurtunity. We can move to these uninhabited islands and relying on what the Gods granted us and our willingness to endure hardship to prove to Odin we are worthy of him we can build a home where the Runaviks failed. In doing so we can create a land where our beliefs, our wishes and our traditions are safe. We want to live off our land, we want to be self sufficent and we want to be in charge of our own destiny. We mean no nation or no individual harm. One need only look at our first act on the international stage. We have renounced our rightful EEZ under the FSC as a nation of our size has no need of it. We wish to be good neighbours and we hope the President and people of Runavik can see this."

To date no statements from other nations have been made and the fragile future of the Cross-Island Republic stands in the balance.

MORELANDER VISIT A MISSED OPPORTUNITY SAY LAW SPEAKER

The Nations current Law Speaker Malin Feldt has today spoken of how the visit by the King of East Moreland was "a missed oppurtunity". The 52 year old was selected to the Thing in December 2019 and was responsible for pushing for a large number of changes to pension rules and health and safety legislation. When in May 2020 preparations for the next selection of The Thing were taking place Mrs.Feldt was elected by her peers to remain on as the Law Speaker a position seen as being the voice of the people to the President. She today was critical of President Tobin Grimwal for not taking advantage of the prominent Royals visit to build stronger relations. "It is well known King David and the people of East Moreland's Foreign Office are active diplomatically. We are essentially the opposite. We've only had communication with foreign governments over the ongoing island saga and there we need to work at a more rapid pace. There should have been an official series of talks between President Grimwal and King David. He should have been brought to visit The Thing and it would have been nice to think they would have left with our nation having secured some kind of friendship with them beyond their King and Queen spending a lovely evening here." Mrs.Feldt went on to criticise the President even further saying, "The President is happy to collect his 120,000 Geld a year wages. He has three main duties, giving orders to the military, dealing with foreign affairs and giving final ascent to legislation we pass, at the present he is only doing 1/3 of these and perhaps we should therefore only get 1/3 of his wage."

The President defended himself against Mrs. Feldt saying "We are living in a time of unparalleled peace for our nation. Even these issues on the outer islands can and should be dealt with calmly and sensibly rather than blasting them away. The visit from a prominent and seasoned diplomat like King David is one I would have been excited to take advantage of however the King's itinerary on his seemingly world tour was given to us late in the day meaning it would have been difficult to have meaningful talks, especially as the King was only to be here less than 48 hours. We will in good time pursue diplomatic and various other ties with East Moreland, and many other nations but it will not be rushed."

It is expected that the President is likely to make his own mini world tour shortly and that Northfort is likely to be among the stops as well as Krokom, Gaia and Aosta. Meanwhile Mrs. Feldt has just over a month left as Law Speaker following which she intends to return to work in a factory processing fresh fish.
