The Comeback
« on: August 12, 2024, 04:37:18 PM »
OOC - Some of you who were in Audaxia may remember me as Artemis. For the past four or five years I've been in Europavalis RPing.

There had been a time when KritTV had been a gem of a TV station. It had six channels and each of them had brought the people of Kritamala a variety of entertainment, education and news. Even though each moment of its content had been controlled by the Communist regime it was still hugely popular and millions of people had watched in 2015 as gunmen stormed into the studio and shut it down, it was now deemed a frivilous luxury and under Imtiaz Bachchan dictatorship such things were not permitted. Someone had effectively just flicked a switch and plunged the TV into static flickering black and white and that had been it. The Kritamalan people had entered a dark time. In the weeks that followed cities emptied, food became scarce and anyone Bachchan believed could be a threat simply disappeared. The idea of a world beyond their borders became a distant memory and some would describe Kritamala as Mundus' largest prison. The number of people who died during this time was not certain. Some died of starvation, deemed worthless by the Bachchan regime and their ration withheld. Others were summarily executed, in the mountains some froze to death in the winter and diseases that many saw as easily curable saw people die. Even basics such as insulin became a rare commodity given only to the most well connected.  All through these years the static and storm of black and white pixels filled any screen that found the signal.

That was until the 12th August 2024, "Hold the door!" A womans voice could be heard, the first noise the channel had made in almost a decade. "The one on the right.....yes." There was a few crackles and pops and then an image of a woman with long dark hair, a flack vest on and the letters KASA on the front. "To anyone watching, wherever you are......I am Tamanna Rao, leader of the Kritamala Anti-Soviet Army. I am here to confirm that just moments ago the evil dictator Imtiaz Bachchan has died. We at the KASA have taken control of the capital. Across the nation as we speak cells are sweeping into action. The Soviet has fallen. The dictatorship is over. If you are the military do what is right, put down your arms and join us. To the people if the military near you do not join us we must take them into custody. KASA will succeed. KASA will free you. KASA will make Kritamala a nation we can be proud of." There were sounds of gun-fire off camera as Tamanna looked at the direction sound had come from.

"They've surrendered" a voice yelled from off screen and a smile spread across the face of the woman talking.

"As word spreads we are hearing the army are laying down arms. Ladies and Gentleman welcome to the future."

Lodja had never fallen under the control of the Soviets. It had after all been so far south and seperated by the whole of Albion for that misfortune to befall it. The nation had always tried to build some connection with other Rus nations but the existence of the Soviets had made that more or less impossible being a Queendom. The Lodjain intelligence services had routinely kept track of news channels around the world giving them an insight into what was going off, a team of four junior intelligence analysts had the mind numbing job of doing daily scans and alerting anyone of the superiors as to what was found. Radislav sat sipping his coffee as he scanned through various channels that an alogrithim the big wigs had given cooked up said may yield something interesting. There was news about the going ons in Nya Aland, something about human shields. There was news of the upcoming wedding in Rokkenjima and even some distrubance in Drenovia. It was then that his superior officer Anatoli came in. "What is the Kritamala stations?" he asked

"Kritamala, isn't that the black hole in Aranye?" Radislav responded.

"Yes that's the place" Anatoli was already trying to find the channel and by the time he did it was too late, they caught only the tail end Tamanna Rao's broadcast. Anatoli began the process of passing the information up the line as Radislav busied himself trying to find a copy of the full broadcast. It took him some time and then that information too passed up the line.

By early afternoon it had landed on the desk of chief intelligence adviser to Queen Natalya, Ignat Zaytsev, he assessed various things and then contacted Jasmina Danilov who was the Head Lady in Waiting, as a result she effectively controlled access to the Queen and as such made a gap in the Queen's schedule for half an hours time. It feel while the Queen was enjoying a snack before a meeting of the Conclave and the news took her by surprise. Her instructions though were clear. See if there was a way they could make contact with KASA, this Rao lady and confirm whether this was legit or not. Ignat set about doing exactly that. There had been an individual a while back representing what he claimed to be KASA Overseas Brigade and he'd been sniffing around for some weapons. At the time Queen Viktoriya had sent them packing but they'd kept tabs on the person since. It wasn't too difficult to make contact again and a meeting was arranged at a port cafe later that day.

OOC - Placed on YouTube/Twitter/Facebook etc

"Good evening. If you are seeing this then it is a happy day for all Krita people across Mundus. The dictator Imtiaz Bachchan is dead or in our custody. But who are we? We are the Kritamala Anti-Soviet Army or more simply the KASA. I am Tamanna Rao and I have for a very long time dreamt of this day. The KASA was set up to prepare for a time when the Bachchan factions guard was lowered, a time when with our limited resources and uncertain support we could take back our freedoms. That time has come and now those who are supporters of the KASA across the globe have been given the word to share this message.

First I want to talk to any of my fellow Krita people. We have since 1935 been oppressed by a foreign political ideology. Our nation was once a proud collection of city states, then a fine Empire and a place that respected art, culture, philosophy and should the story be true once home to the largest library Mundus has ever seen. Since 1935 though should that library have survived the Soviets would have slowly destroyed it, more and more censorship took place erroding our knowledge and our proud heritage. Those books would have been removed much like how Bachchan tried to remove us from the global networks of nations. Just as we believed being under Soviet control couldn't get worse Bachchan intentionally isolated us, intentionally used us as human fuel for his machine of repression and depression. For the past decade our homeland has been changed so much. Chaudhuri was once a beautiful and amazing city of millions, now it stands with just a few thousand inhabitants as people were sent to the farms, to the forests and to the mines. We will likely never know how many died or were tormented under his reign of terror but that is now over. The KASA is now in control of the nation but I want to assure you this is not just a case of exchanging one dictatorship to another. This is an example of us putting in place a path towards our nation regaining its former glory, if not even exceeding that. Now let me explain how we will do that.

First we shall need to, assuming we haven't already, secure the support of our armed forces. If that hasn't already happened we may need to see the KASA fight for our freedom but if that happens I urge you all to find your courage and join us, together we can and will win. Next there will be need to have a government, we need to start functioning again as a nation but that will take time. Until then the High Command of KASA will act as government. This is a five person panel including myself and four others who you will meet in due course. We are not government officials, we are nothing more than ordinary Kritamalan's. Personally I am a farmer, I ran a sheep farm and I ran it well, at one point it was the most productive farm per head of sheep in the whole of the nation. I was educated in the academies system here. I am no politician but for the time being I am going to need to be one. This acting government will only make decisions based on the majority decision. We shall spend the first two weeks reviewing and analysing what records we have and at the end of those two weeks we shall work out exactly the way we shall do step three. The third step will involve you, the whole nation. We shall form a committee of at least 40 individuals, the method of selection to be based on what we learn from our review of records however the method will ensure fair representation of all aspects of our society. We shall present this committee with a draft constitution and allow them to take it forward, amend it, mould it and create a government structure that will allow our people to then take the forth step. The forth step is to select who we want to lead us moving forward and then once that is in place KASA's job is done.  We have a journey ahead of us and we need you all to walk this path with us.

To the rest of Mundus we want you to know that over the coming days you are possibly going to find that members of KASA have been in your nation. They have not been there as spies, they have not been there harbouring ill will towards you. They will now likely wish to return home and help with the process I have outlined and I hope we can rely on your support in doing so. It is our intention to open up Chaudhuri international airport for its first flights since the Bachchan regime closed it. Please do not stand in their way, please do not view them as a threat, our mission is all but complete and we want them here when we cross the finish line.

We shall have our TV station up and running fully in short order and we hope to bring you news as we move forward."

As things tended to do, one conversation lead to another contact, which lead to another and now Dragan Knežević, the nations Minister of Finance found himself delivering a letter to a foreign banker he once did business with who happened to be the son of someone in Kritamala who was in the KASA leadership. It was a rather strange delivery method and Dragan was rather happy to actually be off the Isle of the Goddess for a while as he had been busily trying to put together a new budget for the Queen's latest religious reform ideas. This meeting was taking place at a rather nice cafe in the centre of Gaia and he had arrived first. He ordered a black coffee and a selection of cakes and waited. Once his contact arrived they chit chatted until the 2nd coffee and cakes had been brought and then Dragan got down to the real business. Once he'd verbally outline the offer he handed over a formal letter from the Queen.

Quote from: Letter

To: The Leadership of KASA

The Queendom of Lodja is a member of an organisation known as the International Humanitarian Corps (IHC), currently made up of the former CNN nations. Our task is a simple one, to utilise our military to ensure humanitarian aid reaches where it is needed. In parallel their is a body called the Joint Emergency Team made up of wonderful civlian voulenteers. I am writing to you mainly on behalf of IHC as we are placing people and resources on standby should you need them. We have seen a recent Free Mundus Network report that has talked about your health system being in poor state however we have nothing to base this on other than this media outlet. Should your leadership allow us we would like to utilise IHC assets to support your nation in its recovery. Additionally we believe you are likely to receive a similar proposal from JET and we would like to work alongside them to maximise results. If you have any questions or wish to discuss the matter we shall be happy to establish a chain of communication.

We wish you all the best

Having a functional grasp of Rus was a move by Caprice that her father had approved of. It meant that they could effectively sell things to both sides of the old World V's USR conflicts, and even better acquire things from both sides. Caprice had wandered into her father's living room and thrown him a copy of the Free Mundus News and smiled. "Dad, I've got a plan."

He had been sat watching the morning news on TV and now turned it off and gestured for her to take a seat next to him as he leaned forward to the coffee table and poured her a thick black coffee from the cafetiere. "Tell me of your scheming" He smiled as he watched her put in just a splash of cream and one brown sugar cube.

"Kritamala. There a nation in a mess, poor children dying of curable diseases, poor quality of life. I think I read average life expectancy of 50. Its tragic" She mockingly wiped a tear away from her eyes. "A nation with an army that's either going to disintegrate or make a power play. When the USR collapsed we got a gold mine of stuff. We've still a load of AK's kicking around to see from that one. When the Soviet of Safraen went we topped up on a few tanks they left behind before the CIS rounded them up. Obviously all recycled for their scrap metal by now. This is another play. They'll likely have in Kritamala compatible kit. So if their army go for it and take power they may be in the market for some stuff. Now if they don't make a play for power then they'll likely have stuff to sell as some of them are maybe going to face trouble down the line if the community want revenge. A few rubles.....or whatever they spend in their back pocket would help them flee and if they just happen to trade some kit for it who am I to argue."

"Its a good point" Albanus said. "How though do we make contact?"

"That's simple" Caprice said, "We've a whole charity dedicated to helping children. I get a few of our transport planes, fill it with baby formula or something. We head over there and make some deals. Based on that we can either fly stuff out or come up with some other plan. I'll go, I'll take Osvaldo with me and a few other steady guys." Osvaldo was a solid dependable member of Albanus' foot-soldiers. He'd been a soldier in the Paracambian army before doing some private military contracting and then from their finding himself employed by Albanus. As a result him and his family had a nice house, plenty of luxuries and that meant Osvaldo had a strong sense of loyalty and gratitude to Albanus. He also knew his way round weapons better than most so would be handy to have.

"OK....I look forward to seeing our charity doing so good."

It wouldn't take Caprice long to sort out the plane, paper work etc. The government of Bakkermaya were only too keen to see some kind of childrens milk and various other supplies heading to what could be a crisis. The company also had five of its own aircraft so it wasn't exactly difficult to get things ready. All that was left was to see if Caprice's shift on the CB Radio had unearthed the useful contact she hoped she had. If it went well they'd make some serious money, if it didn't they'll have some nice PR of giving kids food, it was win win as far as she was concerned.

To:-  Her Divine Majesty Queen Natalya of Lodja

I thank you and the IHC membership for your letter. We have not yet got round to co-ordinating a nationwide response in regards to the work that needs doing however it is obvious some outside input will be required. While we are still undertaking an initial audit of the steps needed we have prioritised putting a functional and representative provisional government together. However I would in the short term like to invite you to send representatives to assess the facilities we currently have for humanitarian purposes.

I shall be in touch further, assuming I form part of the provisional government, at which time we shall have a more clear cut idea of the work that needs to be done.

Thank you for your support

Tamanna Rao on behalf of the K.A.S.A

REMAF Ostlake were not strangers to rapid deployments and King David had placed them on standby as soon as details of Kritamala had been known. The newly established IHC had swung into operation quickly and orders had come a few hours ago that in what was now less than 30 hours the first flight would be taking off. "Flt.Sgt where is the pallet seating?" Squadron Leader Wiley asked his senior engineering NCO.

"Hanger Three sir....we're already on it. The forklift just had a bit of a tantrum but should be installed in the next two hours." Flt.Sgt Kennedy was busy with his clipboard checking everything on the plane over as his right hand man Corporal Diggs checked and rechecked the contents of various pallets. He could hear the JNCO yelling at airmen that certain tools were missing and issuing all manner of threats if they were not found immediately. A group of four airmen scurried off and moments later emerged with the various bits and pieces much to the joy of Diggs. "Its just like that IKEA stuff from Smaragdfalt or which other Nordic hole it comes from. If you don't have that weird allen key thing you're screwed" he explained to the men who he now dispatched off on the next task. It was a flurry of activity all day until with five hours to spare Sqd.Ldr Wiley and Flt.Sgt Kennedy were happy all preparations had been completed. "I'm not looking forward to those seats." Kennedy informed his commanding officer as they inspected the pallet of seating. A large metal frame with several rows ten seats had literally just been bolted to the floor of the massive aircraft and secured with ratchet straps. They didn't look immediately the most comfortable of places to spend time on a significantly long flight of around 10 hours. The permanent seats didn't seem a better option with them effectively facing backwards. "Put the Marines and Engineers on the pallets." He instructed, "Put the boys and any foreigners up in the proper seating" was the last instruction that was given just moments before Major James Grant of the Royal Marines arrived and began getting his lads set up. Next the Royal Engineers rolled in, checking the security of various tool kits before finally any foreign passengers were escorted across the airfield to get settled after waiting in the Other Ranks Mess for their departure.

The flight was largely uneventful. A little mid Karifan turbulence was something that their pilot, Flt.Lt Rufford, couldn't handle. Spotting the old international airport a pair of binoculars were brought out. The timing of the flight ensured they'd be attempting to land at 9am local time and the weather was pretty clear. All part of the plan to make sure this landing phase could be done as easily as possible. Satellite imagery and what local intel they'd got said the airfield should be OK but Rufford still completed one single orbit while his air crew used their own glasses to check for problems. "EVeryone green?" He asked his crew over their private channel and getting verbal thumbs up he began his approach. It was a little rougher than he'd imagined but a few lumps and bumps were to be expected. As they made their way down the taxi ways to what appeared to be their assigned parking spot he spoke over the aircrafts PA. "Ladies and Gentleman welcome to Kritamala. The local time is somewhere in the 1960's and the weather outside is a lovely 22 degrees, thats Celsius for you ordinary people, or 72 Fahrenheit for any weirdos. Please remember to take all your luggage with you and if you've enjoyed your flight we hope you remember to use REMAF for your next flight....if you didn't then we've been Dijel Airlines....get off." The ramp was already lowering and while each units commanders began issuing orders it was left to Squadron Leader Wiley to go and see who was in charge here.

Sandip Shah had spent much of his youth dealing with crop dusting planes. He'd never ran an airport before, but in truth it wasn't like they'd had much happening since he'd been given the job of managing the ins and outs. He'd just about managed to get the radio systems back up and running after some moron had taken much of the copper wiring around the place, no doubt to try selling for scrap. The first plane had been a little one from Ares Foundation after Major Shashi Mhasalkar had approached Sandip seeking permission for the aid to land. It hadn't been difficult for the army officer to convince the younger farm boy and so when Caprice Ares had arrived he made sure it was to him she was pointed. He was unsure now if he was still really anything to do with the army. It had seen its chain of command collapse as news had spread of the despotic dictator Imtiaz Bachchan's death. Then in the few days that followed more of them had simply just wandered off into the countryside and now it was hard to work out if the army were actually still working for the country at all. "Miss Ares....I hope thats right?" He asked her as he was shown to her aircraft. "I am Major Mhasalkar, please call me Shashi, welcome to Kritamala and thank you." He moved her away from the aircraft and ears that could listen in "I must say your people were pretty intriguing with what they were saying. I do have access to materials you'd find interesting but I also need to have access to materials in your possession that would make me interested. What do you have that may make me your friend" He asked.

It was later that morning that Sandip would have to deal with his second flight. From the dusty old air traffic control tower he did his best to bring the heavy East Moreland military aircraft in. He had a guy on a small motorbike with a yellow jacket on go and lead the big metal plane to its hardstanding having taken the longer route round taxiways to avoid some large pot-holes. While the Ares plane had been important to the nation it was a relatively small thing and as such Major Mhasalkar had convinced the interim leadership he could handle the situation no problem. No major decisions would be needed there, he'd simply need his people to offload a plane and turn it around. The East Moreland plane and the members of the IHC it brought with them was a much higher priority at this time. Sandip had clambered down the steps from the tower, no other planes would be landing that day. He joined Tamanna Rao on the tarmac close to where the aircraft was lowering its ramp. "You nervous?" Sandip asked her.

"Rather face Bachchan's people than this....what do I even say? How do I introduce myself? Hi I'm Tammana and I've no idea what I'm doing." She was biting her lip as the ramp clanged open and she could see masses of people inside in foreign uniforms.

"Hello" Without warning Sandip had stepped forward. "I'm Sandip, Airport manager. I'm thrilled to meet you" he announced before Tammana could say anything. "This here though is the Lady you need to speak to. This is our provisional President, Tammana Rao, commander of KASA." He had taken the decision for her and at that moment she could feel her nerves lessen as she stepped towards her guests and extended a hand.

"Nice to meet you Squadron Leader Wiley. Please if you take your people into the terminal we've chai waiting." She pointed across to where a concrete building waited, not one pane of glass in it seemed to have missed being smashed or cracked. Inside where rows of desks with what appeared to be engineers working on projects ranging from small vehicle engines to radios. Roll mats could be seen stored at the edge of the hall, sign that the men working also slept here. At one end a long table was full of plastic cups and a massive cauldron being supervised by two old ladies who were brewing up Chai, a strong tea spiced with cloves, cinnamon and ginger, of course heaps of sugar had been added and a large wooden spoon was used to keep the mix going. The ladies saw the arrivals and began using a ladel to fill the plastic cups so each of the new arrivals could take one. Tammana waited for the apparent leaders to grab a cup and then join her upstairs in what had once been a kind of boardroom. Anicent and faded pictures of aircraft hung on the walls. "I'd like to first thank you for coming. As you can see things here are not exactly ready for guests. We've a lot to do and we've already begun to see some problems. It does not help that, despite what Sandip, may say I'm not officially a President or any kind of leader of the nation. What I can tell you is that we estimate that the KASA has support of around 70% of the country and so far we've had no real opposition, we've mainly been dealing with looting, people seeking revenge on people from the old regime and some profitering. We've tried to use our semi-military level of organisation to make sure key bits of the nation are being restored. It will take time and I am sad to say we can't do this alone. That is why we're glad you are here. Our first priority will be to get this airport up to speed and then from there get things to a point where we can check whether KASA really does have enough support to become the official government. So far anyone wish to say anything?" She asked looking at a room full of foreign faces.

At one stage in his life Besarian Ivanov had been a Major in the Army but that was back in the days when the Lodjain military had effectively been a hobby for the nobles and was heavily corrupt. He'd been catapulted higher than he ever should have but he was one of the honest officers despite his father accelerating his promotions. Now he was Queen Natalya's Royal Envoy as such was given the task of being one of the five Lodjains. The others four were made up of an officer from each branch of the military and Kenet Zadovik who was a member of the Isle of the Goddesses medical staff. The five had arrived in East Moreland well in advance of the flight and had been pleased with the hospitality the Morelanders had shown them, especially a small courtesy visit from Queen Stasya to her countryfolk. The morning of the flight they got into their allocated seats and Besarian was rather unhappy with slumming it but needs must.

When they arrived the state of play was a little concerning. It was worse than Besarian had imagined but if things had been great there presence here would not have been required. After collected a chai, a beverage Besarian could approve of they listened to Tammana speak. " I think I can speak for us all when I say we're committed to helping you. We however have a lack of information. What I could do with knowing are four key things. First, what are the priority areas you need support, is it medical, is it food. There is no point us flooding in food aid into your nation when you've literally warehouses full of the stuff. Second what is the state of your health care system, such things as basic vaccinations for example, I'm sure Dr. Zadovik for example would like to know do you have polio here or not? Third thing is what is likely to happen if we venture out of this airfield? Would we need security with us or would we be free to roam? Finally, and I think this is more for the Morelanders who are keen to build some airfields I believe, is this the only operational airfield in the nation for external flights? I apologise if thats a lot to start with but I think we need to start putting together a bit more of a concrete plan beyond landing here and bring some basic supplies."

"Sir. I don't get it why are we going?" Sgt.McMinn asked his more senior officer Captain Malley.

"I'm going because I have this piece of paper" he tapped his chest pocket, "and that means you are going because it said take two good NCO's with me." the officer said as they gave their rucksacks a final check before heading to the waiting Morelander aircraft.

"So what about those two?" McMinn pointed over to where a guy looking like he was about to go hike round a Loch for a few days and a woman in similar attire stood their packs on their back.

"I'm assuming Sergeant that they've got similar pieces of paper. They're from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs so I think they'll likely be here to make sure we mind our manners and relay things back to the big chiefs." McMinn, Malley and a young trooper by the name of Guswein were members of the Candaw Light Infantry, one of the regiments that still had a tradition of recruiting entirely within its Dukedom as far as possible. Guswein however wasn't a "local" but in the Regiments slang known as a "foreigner" he'd been born in the capital of Claith, far away from the Loch strewn region of Candaw. He'd been allowed to join the unit though as his father had been a member of the unit and so that permitted him to follow in his families footsteps. He was a lad that Malley believed was destined for great things, maybe even an officer training course, and this trip was an opportunity to have a closer look at the lad. As the Morelanders signalled it was time to go the five Cenneg made their way onboard.

Guswein spent the trip trying to chat with the woman from the Ministry, her name was Clare Guiggs and she was a researcher for the department. She seemed excited to be making this trip. Her boss was Luke Shinnan, a junior minister within the Department and the man responsible for giving an indication of what the government may do. He spent the trip sleeping as best he could and reading a hefty briefing paper. Once on the ground that document was carefully squared away in his rucksack before following the Morelanders, Lodjians and others out of the aircraft.

Once in the briefing room Malley was surprised by the seemingly young age of Rao. It appeared to him that she had effectively helped guide the nation out of its repressive control and put them on the doorstep of a brighter future. He hoped that Shinnan would be able to perhaps help them cross over into that brighter light. As Ivanov asked his questions Shinnan waited patiently. "If I may add a fifth question." He said once the Lodjain had finished speaking. "How well can we communicate with the general public. For example lets say we determine that we need a mass polio vaccination programme, how easy would it be to get the word to spread rather than us having to drive town to town, village to village, if thats even possible?"

Tammana was not really used to facing groups firing questions at her. She could feel her palms getting sweaty but she knew that the more information she could give the Morelanders, Cenngians and Lodjains the better for her people. She turned first to the questions of Ivanov. " In terms of support I believe we could manage without food. One thing  Bachchan did achieve was to make us largely self sufficent in terms of agriculture even if it was simply by throwing literally the whole population into it. The issue I would say is not the amount of food but the type. For example we have issues with nutrition in young children. We rely on mothers producing milk for their own babies and lack things such as formula. Much of our food was also about quantity not quality so masses of things such as rice were grown but we lack the proper nutrition. We have in some areas people with fully bellies but still suffering malnutrition. We lack medical equipment and resources. We have the ability to make some things, for example morphine, ourselves but often their are waits for surgical procedures because we lack proper anaesthetics and inflection medication. You asked about vaccinations, if I'm honest I don't entirely know what you can vaccinate these days, I know though that as a child I should have had polio and measles vaccinations and didn't have either. I know of at least two people living with the impacts of polio. The airfield sits about 10km from our capital of Chaudhuri, we've all been there several times now." she pointed around at her friends stood in the room with her. "Its mainly empty. Bachchan dragged everyone out of the major cities years ago and as such a city that could hold say two million has I'd guess about 60,000 people there. The city is in some mess and I suspect leaving the airfield is safe but could present problems passing certain road routes and I can not say what will happen if and when people begin returning to the cities in large numbers. The biggest threat I think could be if the army deceide to stake a claim in the new government we'll try and build. At present many of them have simply disappared and I believe that they have taken weapons with them. There are even rumours of things like tanks missing. As for airfields, the Air Force has several usable airfields dotted mainly around the edge of the nation. So far we know of three of the main six being usable but much like the Army we're not sure how reliable its members are at the moment." She stopped and looked at her friends wondering if they wanted to add anything.

"May I." A man seemingly in his fifities with clearly battered glasses spoke up. "I'm Manraj" he introduced himself. "I suppose I'm the closest we have to a Minister of Health" He walked to stand next to Tammana, "There is a medical concern that Tammana did not really cover. We've just come out of monsoon season. That means lots of standing stagnent water. This therefore means we're about to see an explosion of illnesses such as Dengue Fever, Malaria and even things like cholera. I would request that if possible we can look at ways of getting fresh water in and somehow moving this standing water before the mosquitos really take hold." He looked back at Tammana and then returned to his place stood at the side.

"As you can see we're still making a full reckoning of every problem we'll face, but with your three nations helping us I'm confident we shall overcome." She urned then to Malley from the Cennegians. "In terms of communication we've begun to get the TV station and radio network up and running again. That should allow us to make announcements we think about 70% of the nation will get access to. We also intend to get the CB radio network going 24hrs a day. A lot of the KASA organisation used it to do our work and it seems like there is a wide network out there. Again though we can't guarentee everyone even knows Bachchan is dead and we're rebuilding the country. I hope this answers your questions. Now If I may ask two things from your homelands. First that if we come across people requiring medical care beyond what we here can off that they can seek help in your nation. The second is that you would allow KASA to send someone to each of your capitals to act as a liason?"

Squadron Leader Wiley and Major James Grant from East Morelands Air Force and Royal Marines respectively had stood and listened while Tammana spoke. Without trying to look rude they turned away from the group and conversed for a moment or two before turning back and Wiley addressed the room. "We're going to need to start putting a plan in place. First off the airfield here looks easily usable. With our hosts permission I'd like to suggest that we set up a HQ here. Bring in some tents and start putting together a staff that can organise various aid flights in and I know that we have the ability to take about 1000 of your people at our facility at Hunter's Vale. There we have medical facilities and we can keep the area secure if need be because I'm sorry to say one issue is we don't really know who we're taking, I'm assuming you're not able to furnish us with things like background checks?"

Grant took over, "I'd like to start using the Royal Marines to patrol an area on the edge of your capital, if we're going to have to get aid in and start helping you sort out things like these fevers and malnutrition we'll need somewhere secure closer to where people may be. If you're thinking people may head back to the cities then that's perhaps where we should be and I'd like to get some kind of place secure before they do. Again not wishing to sound rude but I think a East Moreland, Cenneg and Lodjain group would be better for this than involving local troops. If we're unsure why troops have disappeared and the fact there many be a tank or two rolling around out there I'd like to think we'd be safer knowing the three of us are there and anything else is likely to be hostile. That said I would appreciate it if you could supply some steady KASA people to act as kind of local guides but one per unit we put in please."

Wiley had been busy sending messages back home. "We've a few programmes each of the three of us can tap into which may also help. OsmanTech is a company in East Moreland that have done some cool things with malnutrition, for example developing strains of rice rich in Vitamin B to try and help with malnutrition. We've also access to a body called the Global Childbirth Initiative who are likely to have some ideas of how to tackle things like early vaccination and the like. If you'd permit I'd like to invite them to get involved."

Besarian had to admit it seemed like Tammana was well prepared even if it wasn't the most confident in terms of delivery. That was something he could handle though as if he was at least getting good information then he could help make decent decisions.  Kenet Zadovik and Besarian chatted a little as the Morelander military officers responded to Tammana. As they finished the Royal Envoy began to speak to their host. "I know that our government will also ensure what resources we can through our membership of the Global Childbirth Initiative will be thrown your way. While the Morelanders are talking of using their assets to secure the capital region I'm going to suggest you permit Lodjain forces to help support securing your largest port. While its fine flying things in here we must also realise that whatever support we put in place is not going to all be able to fit into the back of an aircraft, some stuff the dimensions will simply not permit to be transported by air. As such we'll be needing a port and if you're worried about cities becoming perhaps a little lawless I am assuming, perhaps wrongly, that you'll have a port city somewhere that will need a similar arrangement. We would also think that if everyone is heading back to cities we could potentially have power issues. I'd like to float the idea that we seek out the help of Altona. They are producing many portable nuclear reactors and as such they could fulfil a need here. There is though the issue of the MAEA treaty but the work around is that neither Altona nor Kritamala are members of that treaty and so if we can have any arrangement between those two nations we could potentially make it work."

If they were talking wider aid affairs then it would be  Luke Shinnan, the Junior Minister who would speak for the Cenneg. "We've the ability to start large scale manufacture of vaccines. When the three of us were members of the CNN it was the yellow tongue virus that impacted livestock that saw us all able to produce quantities of that in record time, as such we'd be capable of switching the processes and helping with others such as say the polio vaccination. I do though wonder do you also need vaccinations for livestock? Whats the state of that kind of care here?"

Meanwhile it would be Captain Malley who would discuss military matters. "While it seems our Morelander and Lodjain buddies have tasks they've agreed to undertake that leaves my men and women twiddling their thumbs. The Cenneg military has around 10,000 troops we can commit to this in a matter of days, some even within 24 hours. What I could do with knowing Tammana where is it that you need us, if we've the capital having safe areas created, if we've a port being brought under the security umbrella I suppose its a case of where do you need us?"

There was a lot to consider and the three nations offering help would all be welcome. Tammana though knew she would need to give some outline of what needed to happen. She did not want to give the people of her homeland the impression that she was simply handing the nation over to a foreign power that would replace Bachchan. "I feel then that this is what we should do. First I would like to assign some of my more experienced KASA members to the East Moreland forces that will head to the capital. We have a cricket ground there that was once the venue of our international teams matches. I think it would make a good base when you arrive. It has large car parks and lots of space inside so should provide a good HQ, from there I would like you to accompany our people as they head through the city making surveys of the situation. Perhaps we can then head to the University of Technology in the city which should be a more habital HQ if we need to be there long term. In a similar vain I'd like to do something similar with Lodja. Our largest port in terms of volume is Thakurdiya, it is though a little aged now, if I can put it politely. Its more of a massive fishing port than a real cargo one nowadays. If we can spruce it up a little it should be able to handle deliveries like the ones you have described. Again with the Lodjain forces I'd like to add KASA forces to their efforts. With the Cenneg, you're asking to commit your soldiers, I wonder if I could ask them to turn to a particular task. We've concerns over whether military establishments are truly going to stand down and join our efforts. In the coming days we need to send KASA there to take stock of the situation and an inventory of where the troops are, as we know many have simply gone AWOL and may have taken equipment with them. I'd like it if we could convince you to help support these visits."

"In terms of vaccinations these should follow as we go. I have some medical people who can help with that and I know they'd welcome any support that you can give. We also desperately require the doses. That though can't come until we get things secure." She now had to turn to a difficult thing. So far she'd been delighted at the offers of help and the suggestions put forward.

"I am though going to have to turn down any involvement of Altona, or any nuclear power stations as such. My fear is that we can't take a security risk of such even if your forces are present. I'm worried of elements of the regular military taking advantge of this situation and the last thing I want is a rebel faction with access to a nuclear reactor. However if all other matters are fulfilled when can we begin?"

The motto of XV Squadron was perhaps apt for this situation "Standing By". Their C-6 Swallows were used to ferrying military equipment between various East Moreland commitments when they'd been members of the CIS, then the CNN and even out to training areas in Nya Aland. Today the aircraft were being prepared for taking the equipment of 30 Red Legionnaires and around 8,000 members of Duke Legion out to Kritamala. For the next few days the 12 aircraft that made up the squadron would shuttle back and forth alongside a trio of converted airliners that would take the brunt of the soldiers. A kind of departure lounge had been set up in one of the hangars where men awaited their flights while playing cards, watching the Mundus Games or simply snoozing. As the last of the pallets of supplies was loaded onto the first of the Swallows Red Legionnaire officer Seb Johnson lead his patrol onto the aircraft where they began stringing up their hammocks between the pallets loaded with supplies. Seb had spent a lot of time seconded to the National Intelligence Agency and was now happy to be back among the elite unit he considered home. Up in the cockpit the pilot did his final checks and began trundling down the runway. It would be about a ten hour flight and six hours after this aircraft took to the skies a second would follow. This would pretty much be the routine for the next few days. Onboard the Reds and the handful of Royal Engineers tried to sleep while Seb at one point did his best to commit their route to the cricket ground to memory while tucking into the chocolate sponge pudding with custard from one of the ration packs they had.

Ten hours later they touched down and Seb left the aircraft with his bergen on his shoulder followed by the foru LEgionnaires in his patrol looking for the local guys who would be working with them. Even before he'd found them the Engineers were busy moving pallets of supplies out of the rear of the aircraft.

It would take the Lodjain ships that would be keeping an eye on the ports the best part of 10 days to reach Kritamala from their homewaters. First though it would be the job of the Queen's Airborne Assault Regiment (QAAR) to move overland and see about securing the ports. It had taken a few days for the unit and its equipment, a host of IFV's and mobility vehicles to arrive. Once everything had been checked and double checked the unit, lead by Lt-Col Lavr Konstantinov, waited the local forces. They were hoping for a straight run to the port, some town called Thakurdiya, where it was hoped they'd link up with the naval assets that would bring even more supplies into Kritamala.

With the demise of Bachchan the Kingdom of Renaku had a little bit of an issue. Bachchan had been someone they'd had an uneasy relationship with. He kept to his side of the border and largely ignored the Kingdom. There was however some circumstances where there was no way the tribesman of the hills in the east of Renaku would really respect the borders, such as a lost horse, while hunting etc. As a result there had been the odd border clash between errant tribesman and the Kritamalan border forces. Now though there was an unknown, this KASA, would they be simply a continuation of the government of old, a threat or a friendly neighbour. King Temur wasn't about to take any chances on that and so he had ordered the military to mobilise. He had sent word through what channels he could that one of his Generals would be based at Karacaören, the Renaku barracks closest to their neighbours, incase KASA wished to speak.

Brigadier Darcy Hendricks found himself with a few butterflies in his stomach. He'd seen the Morelander and Lodjain contingents getting ready but believed that perhaps his men of the Candaw Light Infantry would be most likely to see action. The idea of going to military establishments that had no real authority guiding them anymore meant that they could be about to encounter anything. With his men being accompanied by a few heavier pieces of armour from the 1st Armoured Assault Corps and with the boys of the Royal Horse Artillery following along they had a robust force. They though didn't really know what they'd be getting into. He'd gathered his senior officers and briefed them on the rules of engagement, not to fire unless fired upon, and hoped that they wouldn't be needed. At present there was little in the way of air support, a few helicopters had been brought over but an Air Force contingent was due in that evening. Until then they'd have to rely on local assets if they had them and their own wits. They waited for the KASA contingent to meet with them and as everyone piled into vehicles Hendricks addressed the column. "Remember everyone, no-one fires first but we make sure we fire more and we fire last. With the Morrigans Might let get this job done." He gave the order to head out.

"Shashi" Caprice repeated the name. Clearly she hadn't expected this Major to simply just hand over vast amounts of military equipment. She had come prepared for just such an arrangement. She turned to one of her "associates" a large bearded man called Edwin who passed her an envelope. She opened it and checked inside before handing it to the Kritamalian. "That is a small token of our thanks for agreeing to meet." The envelope contained a gold necklace chain made of heavy links. "We figured that it would be much easier to deal perhaps in goods rather than money at this stage, after all I'm not aware of what currency you'd like to get paid in. The jewellry was worth a pretty penny and Caprice had stashed various other consignments similar to this in the various aid packages that they had brought in. "It is my hope we can set up something regular. I know some businesses that would....just as an example....be interested in buying re-purposed tanks, remove the gun and they make surperb bulldozers for nations like Wadden I've heard. It would just be a pure accident that the gun ends up going for scrap metal processing in Royal Seleucid and then goes missing because of their lax controls over such things." She hoped that Shashi understood what was happening. "Its incredible how you can repurpose lots of old military equipment for newer purposes for lots of markets. It is though a complex happening so I'd propose that I ensure that you get a good monthly payment in a manner that suits you. In addition I'd give you a bonus for each shipment we successfully get to market. Now I'd assume that you'd require a kind of staff of your own, people you can trust. I'll give you a monthly budget for that too. This partnership goes well and we can make some serious money together. Do we have an arrangement or do I take me shipments elsewhere?"

Major Shashi Mhasalkar was pleased at what was being suggested. "If this is to happen I do not want paying in our rupee's. I'm on borrowed time once our first deal is made and I want to ensure that I'm able to move. I would like you to arrange an account in the Charterlands to receive payment in their currency." He removed a notebook from his uniform pocket and scribbled some details on it handing them to Caprice. "When I see the first of your payments has hit the account then I shall 20 days later have a consignment for you. We'll start off with some munitions and firearms, a nice simple one. Should that go without a hitch then I can begin taking more specific instructions. Might I suggest though that your company also begins exporting some goods from Kritamala, we do after all have plenty of agricultural produce. It will make it less likely that any goods leaving will be checked once they see a few honest transfers of goods. Also it will potentially give us cover for moving some stores that we can acquire for you. I can make arrangements for that via the farms and co-operatives the army acquire there supplies from if that is a route you'd like to use?"

"Brigadier Hendricks?" A voice called from behind the Cenneg officer, "I'm Ravinder Singh, I suppose Major is my rank" he shrugged, he was not wearing a formal military uniform like the Cenneg but only a shoody camoflague jacket with a KASA badge hastily sewn onto each epulette. "Me and around 80 of our boys are to join you as we head out." Across the airports various car parks and grassy areas other introductions were being made. Murali Khan would be accompanying the Morelanders while Ayaan Mhasalkar would go with the Lodjains. There were various discussions and examinations of maps before what was now a single column of vehicles began to fire up their engines. With Murali Khan stood in the bed of a Toyota Landcruiser a single wave of his arm indicated that they were underway and soon the long line of vehicles of various types, an eclectic mixture of nationalities, civilian and military vehicles rolled out under the sign that would have a long time ago welcomed people to Kirtamala's International Airport. The roads were devoid of traffic, save for the odd little tractors chugging its way between farm and field. An occasional little motorbike would zoom past, often playfully weaving among the column with waves at the foreign troops. Over the radio Khan addressed the column. "This is where we depart for the capital." He said and the first section of vehicles indicated onto a sliproad and turned off towards the capital. For the rest of the column it was a straight run to the major highway that ran across the nation. At this point it was Ayaan Mhasalkar's turn to peel off. "Good luck" he radioed the rear of the column as he and the Lodjains turned heading for the coast. What was left of the convoy took the other fork in the road, they would be heading off towards Ghuraj, a town some 50km away where a military base was located that was home to a few squadrons of the air-force. If they could ensure they were up and running it would perhaps give them another way of moving goods around and it would show that KASA were trying to bring the nation back under control. The road soon became less of a highway and more just two roads, one heading south and the other taking the Cenneg north. It was still largely empty and the Cenneg soldiers would be treated to a view of the Kritamalan countryside which at this time of year could be stunning. The fields were lush and green with harvests ready to be plucked. An occasional dense corpse of forest acted like punctuation over the billiard table flat plateu they rode along. Every now and again they reach a  river with a rickety old bridge over and they'd be forced to slow down but still the relentless pace continued. After a few hours they reached Ghuraj. The town itself was empty save for a few small signs of life. It appeared that some people were already beginning to head back from the countryside. There was a sense that the town had not seen hustle or bustle for years and a thin layer of dust hung on most windows. The road to the base itself at least seemed well maintained and as they reached the gate a soldier in uniform, who looked no more that 14 approached. He spoke with Ravinder Singh and it seemed an argument was taking place. Almost reluctantly the boy returned to his guard box and picked up a phone before seemingly changing his mind about whatever it had been he and Singh had spoke about as soon he returned, offered a hand to Singh then opened the red and white barrier giving them access to the base. He stood aside and even waved at the Cenneg as they followed the KASA onto the base. "It appears no-one had told the guard detail we were coming" Singh informed Hendricks as they travelled towards the bases main buildings. "The base commander is a Group Captain Manraj." Soon they pulled up outside a white washed single story building. A troop of four men in flying suits were standing around smoking cigarettes as the convoy pulled up. Singh got down from his vehicle and motioned for Hendricks to follow him. Seeing what appeared to be a high ranking officer of some sort in Hendricks the flying suit clad men stopped chatting and looked at each other in slight confusion. One seemed to take the lead and sluggishly came to attention and slobberly gave a salute. Singh entered the building and a man with a neatly brushed grey moustache appeared from an office.

"Good Afternoon" He said extending a hand towards Singh first then Hendricks before ensuring introductions. "I am Group Captain Manraj. I apologise for the slack welcome, we have gone from a force of 500 men here to just 127.....or 128, I am not sure whether one has absconded or is simply still in town, likely drunk" He rolled his eyes. "Brigadier Hendricks I do not wish you to think badly of a fellow officer but for years our men have lacked perhaps the focus your own men may have. Now many are concerned about their families, some I suspect about people taking revenge or in some cases they have gone to simply line their own pockets. I'm shamed to say I have already lost a helicopter. My men here though have done there best to mount a guard of sorts." He brought them into his office and handed Hendricks a piece of paper, "That is a manifest of what we should have in stores, the number in red is the actual number of each item we have so far. You will see with the exception of the helicopter we have lost only consumables, mainly fuel which some locals have come and taken to fuel generators. A lack of orders means I've been unsure what to do......shooting them seemed a little....hmmm, old regime." He mused. "Now may I ask if I am to place myself into your custody or remain here of service?"

The Lodjain column was treated to some interesting sights as the headed towards the coast. First they transversed through some marshland where the Lodjains could have glimpsed Heron gliding on the search for dinner. As the marsh opened up to a lake Flamingos grouped in a mass of pink as they sifted through the waters for the small crustaceans that gave them their trade mark colour. As they rounded the lake and made the straight run for the coast they first had to climb a small hill range known as the Dhanya Giri. Ayaan Mhasalkar spoke via the radio to the column, mainly to the Lodjains who could hear. "These are the DHanya Giri, I think you'd call them the grain hills?" He suggested trying his best to translate, "The hills mark a barrier between the marshland here and the sea, they are though rather fertile, hence the name." As they descended the other side of the Dhanya Giri they turned along a coastal road. Here there seemed to be lots of thriving fishing communities, part of Bachchan's attempts at making the nation self sufficent. As the convoy passed several of them KASA flags flew indicating that there was some presence there. Finally they approached Thakurdiya Port, the city itself some 3km further down the coast. A few puffs of smoke indicated something there was on fire. The column approached the docks gate but as they got around 30 meters away a red flare went up. The column stopped and from the side of the road a black car emerged stopping across the road itself. Four men got out wearing what looked like industrial workers overalls but each carrying an automatic rifle. Cautiously Mhasalkar approached them and there was a lengthy discussion with lots of waving of hands from the workers and pointing. Mhasalkar seemed to sigh and turn back to where Lt-Col Lavr Konstantinov was. "They are the representatives of the National Dockyard Alliance......never heard of it until today. They claim that they now own this port and that they do not want foreigners here. They say they are waiting for the successor of Bachchan to be determined, either by his will or election and that they'll stay in the port until they get orders from that person. Any idea how you'd like to proceed....we need these ports?"

As they approached Chaudhuri it would be clear even to the Morelanders that this was now nothing much beyond a shell of a city. The suburbs had seen houses demolished for their materials while the cities central areas were eerily quiet. The odd stray dog, or in one case even a mass of wild pigs, seemed to be the only life. Then all of a sudden you'd reach one of the many old plaza areas and a small gathering of people with hand carts would be there selling everything from fresh fruit to carpets. Some would leave their carts and run as the convoy approached, others would try and grab the attention. There were rather heart warmingly chants of KASA at some they passed. Their end target was the cricket ground and as they pulled into the large car park Murali Khan went forward to order some of his guys to cut the padlocks off the stadiums gates to give them access. As they went into the interior of the grounds concourse there would be room to park at least some of the vehicles and turn the storerooms, offices and concession stands into some kind of functioning base of operations. As Singh was showing the two Morelander officers, Major Grant and Cpt. Johnson his thoughts he was distracted by a sound that seemed to be coming from the inner part of the stadium and so he went to investigate taking his Morelander charges with him. As they climbed the flight of steps that led to the stadium seats he found himself smiling half recognising the sound. As the crested the steps he even had a few tears in his eyes. A thwack filled the air and without any explanation Singh applauded and cheered...."SIX RUNS!!!" he yelled startling the eight or so young boys in the centre of the cricket ground, soon other of the KASA men had been drawn to the sound and the boys nervously looked at each other before without exchanging a word two grabbed the single wooden sticks they'd been using as stumps, another sprinted to retrieve the ball and the batter just headed for the low fence they'd clearly clambered over. They didn't make it out as various members of the KASA corralled them and soon Singh, Johnson and Grant meet up with the eight lads who looked rather dirty and unkempt up close.

"You're not in trouble" Singh said reassuringly taking the cricket ball from one and playfully tossing it up in the air with one hand and catching it with the other. It had been some years since he'd held a real cricket ball. "Nice to see the national teams still training hard." He added as he gently pitched the ball to one of the urchins. "Nice catch" he added. "I'm Murali and these are my friends from East Moreland. We're trying to help people here. Where are your parents?" He asked.

"We are orphans Sahib" the boy said respectfully.

"How long have you been an orphan?"

"Me....five years, I am ten years old and I'm the eldest, the others are between five and nine, all lost their parents when people were taken to the farms four years ago." That had been one of Bachchan's forced migrations, when they had not happened quick enough executions had been common as an encouragement to others to comply.

"Dilraj is our Kaka" what seemed to be the youngest boy explained. He called Dilraj his Kaka, an affectionate name usually reserved for ones uncle but in this case as Dilraj went on to explain none of the boys were related.

"I just found them as I wandered the city. We live in the old theatre but on nice days like today we like to play cricket Sahib." Dilraj explained. "Will you be taking us to the farms?" he asked nervously.

"No Dilraj we will not, those days have ended and now I need your help in a different way. You see me and these two gentleman are trying to make the city safe and get things back to better times here. We could use your help, it seems young man that you are the expert on the city. You and your little family know the city better than us and I'd like you to help us."

"Of Course Sahib" the boys seemed proud to be of help. "But I must tell you that we do not go south of the river, over there we've seen people a few times, not often but..." he moved close to the officers, "I am sure they eat people they find." He stepped back "What can we do for you first?" Dilraj stood at attention like a proud soldier and it feeling more like a game to the others they hurried into line beside him standing ramrod tall with chests puffed out, the ones with the bat and stumps holding them sloped on their shoulders like rifles.

As the Queens Airborne Assault Regiment (QAAR) followed the KASA convoy towards the coast their commander, Lt-Col Lavr Konstantinov, was doing his best to try and get the most up to date satellite imagery of the region ahead of them. It was hard though to be confident that even if they did spot people would they be friendlies or hostile. There was a nervousness among the troops while simultaneously an appreciation for the beautiful scenery they were passing. Many of the members of the QAAR had grown up on the islands of Lodja, they tended to be slightly poorer than the mainland with tourism being their main income, that meant many of the youngsters saw a term in the military as there way of escaping the island way of life and potentially climb the social hierarchy that was so important in Lodjain society. Several of the younger boys had spotted villages they wanted to revisit thinking the fishing could be good, a few others sensing chances for some surfing or paddelboarding. At that moment it seemed like the QAAR boys would get quiet an easy posting, roll into a port, do a few patrols and then get some beach time in. As they reached the gates Konstantinov had'nt expected to see the gates locked, neither had he expected to find some workers union of sorts laying down the law to them. When he was asked how they wanted to proceed he thought for a moment. They had no idea how many people they were up against, nor what kinds of weaponry they had. There had been reports of missing military equipment and while it might seem straight forward that a heavily armed Lodjain regiment could take some dock workers without breaking too much of a sweat. He gathered together his senior officers and then the units four APCs fanned out at the various corners of the dock complex. a handful of Alligator vehicles sat amongst them bristling with remote roof mounted weapons systems. Konstantinov headed over towards the fence and waited to see if the representative from the Dockyard Alliance would come over. It took a while and then Kostantinov introduced himself. "We've been invited here by the KASA. We've driven for several hours from Chaudhuri airport and believe me when I say that no one other than KASA is in a position to be doing anything now Bachchan has gone. They've a plan in place that your countryman here can explain but either way this port is needed for the good of your country. Now in terms of what it'll take to get it up and working again is what I need to know. I've a fleet of Lodjain military vessels incoming here, due for about six days time. When they arrive we'll have a substaintial amount of aid to bring ashore and if need be the manpower to bring it ashore ourselves. What I'd like is for you gentleman to help us, you're the experts here and it'll help your nation so much more. Can we come to some arrangement perhaps putting you and youyr members under some kind of contract for this work? Now until that time we're just going to sit out here and wait for our ships to enter Kritamalan water and then we'll need to take steps to make sure that we can do the work we've been sent to."

"Whoa!Whoa!Whoa....did that kid just say cannibals are over the other side of the river?" one of the newer Red Legionnaires, a former member of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Enginners, said to Captain Seb Johnson.

"Get a grip Wilcox" Johnson turned on him. "These boys lasted here years with whatever it is over there running around, be it cannibals or just some headcases, they're in good enough shape to still have fun playing cricket without messing their knickers. You're supposed to be a Red Legionnaire, that means we deal with it or is it true REME really stands for Really Enjoys Making Excuses?" The other men chuckled and Wilcox, as Johnson had intended, went very quiet. Johnson turned his attention back to the conversation he'd been part of. "Is there any easy way over the river?" He asked the boys who confirmed that there were several bridges, all in good condition. "Excellent" Johnson proclaimed, if anything goes wrong then you can come and get us before someone starts snacking on Wilcox there. "You're going to be busy turning this place into our new home away from home. What I'd suggest" he turned to address Lt-Col Ramsey who for now would be the commander of the Morelander contingent in the capital. While he may be the commander he also realised that Red Legion tended to operate outside the usual confines of command structures and Johnson had a plan in mind for what he wanted his little patrol to do it generally would be a good idea. "Is that Lt-Col Ramsey here and the Marines get this place ready to receive more troops and more people should things go a little chaotic. Meanwhile the cool kids will cross the river as covertly as we can and take a nose around. If we find anyone over there not looking like they're about to start turning a ballbag into a three course meal we'll send them this way if need be. If we find the buffet club we'll try and work out if they're a threat. If they are we'll take them out."

"Roger that Captain" Ramsey said. "Might be better making the crossing as nightfalls and until then we've a few drones we can send for a look. How does that sound?"

"Perfect" Johnson said as he took his Legionnaires off to get sorted for that nights forray.

The Royal Marines, Royal Engineers and assorted bodies from various other regiments got themselves settled in as one of the Marines unpacked a pair of small drones that they sent into the city. As the UAV's soared between abandoned blocks of flats, high rise office buildings and even across parks and plazas they saw next to nothing. They spotted a few signs of life, a rooftop garden that looked like it had been tended to, a clothes line full of clean washing elsewhere and finally what looked like a group of people sat in prayer in a backyard. These places were marked on maps and handed to Johnson as places he may want to head by on his exploration. At around 9pm Johnson had proclaimed that it was dark enough for him and his team to make their forray into the southside of the river. Ramsey had positioned some of his marksman in positions to keep overwatch of the five Red Legionnaires who had picked out a spot that allowed them to cross where the drones had seen no activity. That part of the operation went off without any hitch. The team had picked out a three floored building close to the bridge that would be there base of operations, it seemed to have at one point been a restaurant of sorts with accommodation above it. As they entered the place had everything covered in a layer of dust, it seemed no one had been here for quiet some time. As they went room to room making sure there was no one here it became apparent just how long the place has been deserted when Legionnaire Forbes could be heard heaving having checked out one of the downstairs backrooms. Johnson went to check on his trooper and instantly regretted walking in. The room contained a now opened walk in fridge that Forbes had opened releasing a stench of rotting food. "Wow" Johnson said, "Breath through your ears" he remarked as he did his best not to follow in Forbes path. Braving the stench he walked in and using a gloved hand turned over a packet, no chance of recognising what had once been the form of the liquid in the bag. He could see the useby date, some time in 2021. In a way that was a good sign, no one had clearly been here for some time. Johnson imagined how many homes across the city may have similar situations waiting for people to return, if they ever did. He pulled Forbes away from the room and shut the door. "No one opens that again.....leave it for some bloody Marine to sort out" The team laughed as they began setting up shop in one of the upstairs rooms. It gave them a good view down what would at one point have been a busy street and across a small park. Johnson pinned a large map up in what would have once been the flats living room. "We move in a spiral out from here going this way" he traced a finger across the map, "We check each building, we're quiet and if we see anyone we do our best to make contact ok. We go out a pair at a time, no longer than an hour for now. Me and Forbes are out first. If we're not back in an hour let the Marines know."

"Yes boss" the team responded.

Johnson and Forbes made their way back outside checking each direction up and down the street before crossing. Across the road was a similar building to their own only this one seemed to have been a hardware store. "At least no smelly fridges here" Johnson said as he forced the lock on the door as quietly as they could. The pair moved quietly through the building which seemed much better kept than the first. All the merchandise seemed to have been taken, no doubt the hammer, nails, screws etc that labels on shelves showed would have once been placed there had been taken to help the nation under Bachchan. Next they moved up stairs and as they entered one of the bedrooms they noticed a shape on the floor. Johnson passed his torch over it and then motioned for Forbes to step back and cover him. Johnson slowly approached and called out. "Hey!" he said three times, each time increasing the volume. Next he used the barrell of his rifle to poke the body and still no response. "No signs of life" He told Forbes as he used his left boot to roll the body over. "Ah shit" he said rather quickly. "Forbes back out man." The Legionnaire complied but Johnson could see him glancing at the body. Johnson took out a small camera phone he had and snapped some pictures but only having put his respirator on first. Before he exited he ordered Forbes to do the same and then joined him back downstairs. "We're not heading back just yet" He said as he motioned they could take the masks off. "He showed Forbes the photo, "I'd say been dead less than a day. You see that, blood around the mouth, white stuff. Now look at the arm chunks missing.....that rash." Forbes nodded but wasn't sure what he was looking at. "I was once in Safraen, then I was in Gaia when some samples went missing and there was a lab accident. I'd put good money on this being one thing." He sighed "Kaiju Virus."

"Bollocks." Forbes said thinking Johnson must have been winding him up.

"Nope. If there is an outbreak it'd explain what the kids saw, it'd explain why everyone's keeping the fuck away from this place. Pass me the radio." He called Ramsey and told him what they'd found.

"Missions off Johnson. Head back, you and Forbes stay in the car park for now, you're the only ones potentially exposed. We'll get the test kits in ASAP and work out if you're right." Johnson wasn't too worried, While Kaiju was horrific if caught early enough it was actually relatively easy to treat and he was confident that even though he'd been close to the body there was nothing that could transmit the virus. It made sense though to take precautions. As they followed the other three back across the river at a distance it was Wilcox who, once they were nearly back at the stadium spoke first.

"Hey boss" he yelled at Johnson. "Can we get you to promise not to eat us?"

"You're safe Wilcox I don't eat junk food" Johnson yelled back and the team shared a brief moment of light heartedness as they split, Johnson and Forbes into a truck that had been parked up to be there home until test kits arrived while the others returned to the stadium. Ramsey radioed in what they'd found and waited for more information from KASA.

Brigadier Darcy Hendricks was unsure what to make of Ravinder Singh and then Group Captain Manraj. On the one hand they both seemed committed to their roles, Singh not appearing like a typical soldier, yet Manraj seemed almost resigned to the fact things were not proper. Darcy wondered if perhaps the Air Force officer felt defeated now his former boss was dead, or perhaps it was more the situation that the armed forces had all but disintegrated. "On paper Mr.Manraj I am the ranking officer out of the three of us, that being said I am also the foreign officer here. What I am prepared to put in place is that for the time being the Cenneg forces will maintain the security of the base and that you and your men will be confined to the base for the the next 48hours while I seek guidance from above about next steps. In that time I'd like you to maintain command of your men, I will have duties for them and I would like it if you could ensure those are carried out. I believe your diligence of carrying out what appears to be an honest audit shows me that your an officer I can trust and depend upon so I intend to ensure you and your men are shown the respect your rank and professionalism deserves." He extended a hand towards Manraj and hoped his instincts were correct, not that it mattered as in a few minutes time his men would have the base under their watchful gaze. He returned outside to where the various junior officers of his units were already swinging into action anticipating what they'd be asked to do. Some men went off to find places for the men to be billeted and hoped to find a few empty barrack blocks with real beds rather than a hammock strung up in a hanger or something. Men from the Candaw Light Infantry Regiment were kitting up to make a patrol of the base perimeter, the black beret clad 1st Armoured Assault Corps boys were setting about organising a place to park up various vehicles and finally the vehicles of the Royal Horse Artillery had set themselves up on what appeared to have at one time been a drill square. Darcy called his senior officers together and introduced them to Manraj. "Until further notice none of the local troops are to leave and if any arrive they are to be held at the gate until checks are carried out. The Group Captain here is going to have some of his more trusted men assigned to the gate house. First order of business is for you Major Shinfield." He saw the infantryman stiffen in his stance. "I want you to find me about thirty of your troop and go over this." He handed him Manraj's audit. "Best you can I want the results in 24 hours. Not just checking the Group Captains numbers, he assures me it was accurate as of this morning, but it won't hurt to cast a second look, more importantly I want to know which kit is usable as it will prolong our need for calling in resupply." he turned next to a short grey haired officer from the Assault Corps, "Major Gregor I want you to ensure we have somewhere to bring in air support, helicopters will do, I'd love a usable runway.....even if it means putting a call into the Morelanders and borrowing some kit. See what you can do. Any questions anyone?" he scanned the room.

"No Sir!" there was an echo around the room as each man left to be about their business.

"You still have the container right?" Kanti Abbasi, a young corporal in the Kritamalan army asked his colleague.

"Yes, but they'll likely find it if we don't move it soon." His friend was an even younger Private called Sujay who was in some manner related to Major Shashi Mhasalkar. Young Sujay had no interest in a military career and had done everything he could to get himself assigned to a relatively comfy role within the logistics elements of the military thanks to his contacts with his relative Major. As Shashi had told him the future of Kritamala would soon be up for grabs and anyone with foreign contacts, money and weapons would be best equipped to get themselves a decent slice of the pie. They'd received some notes on the kind of things to get and they'd carefully made items disappear, Sujay had even managed to change the master inventory sheet so even their commanding officer was unaware some items had been missing. The plan though had been thrown a little into chaos, first the thefts from people not in Kanti and Sujay's plan had been discovered by Group Captain Manraj and while Sujay had expected some things like fuel and rations to disappear he hadn't counted on a helicopter going missing. How did you even steal a helicopter? The second problem was that they now had the Cenneg crawling around the base doing their own inventory and checks. Down at the far end of the bases firing range was a metal shipping container. It usually was used as a store-room for things like extra sandbags, targets and storing the used cases from shooting practice until they were collected. Sujay, Kanti and three others they'd brought into their scheme had emptied it out on the pretence of doing exactly that and instead of now containing a plethora of equipment for the range it contained a few crates of AK-47's, a few pistols, some grenades and various other munitions they'd acquired. They'd planned on placing it on a truck and taking it away telling people that the roof had been damaged and they were picking up a new one. They'd have dropped the container off with Shashi Mhasalkar and brought an empty one back that he was finding them. No one would be any wiser but now they couldn't even get off base with the Cenneg knowing.

The National Dockyard Alliance was being headed up by Gurpreet Abbas. He'd been working in the docks of Kritamala in one place or another for 25 years now and the 6 major ports had all been in contact with each other since Bachchan's demise had been reported. The foreman at them had hasitly formed the Alliance in order to ensure that they were looked after in whatever post-Bachchan world there was, or if this appeared to be a hoax. Gurpreet meet with the Lodjain officer. He hadn't liked some of the implications that the Lodjain officer had talked about but he had to admit they'd likely not be able to stop anyone with that much firepower taking the port. He had just shy of 50 men ranging from some 16 year old apprentices to men in their 60's who drove the forklifts. He'd told the Lt-Col Kostantinov he'd report back to him in an hour and after speaking with the five other major ports he had a decision for them. "Listen I do not believe that KASA can yet claim to speak for the nation. They may have a lot of support but do they have the majority of the nation with them. I know Bachchan may not be popular but some of the original ideas of the Soviets was popular here. I am not simply willing to hand over key infastructure to a group that we have seen nothing of other than their ability to mass soldiers in their name and gain foreign troops. If need be we will leave the port after sabotaging it. While your boats will arrive and we would no doubt be chased away by your professional troops we would first make sure that nothing can move for months perhaps. Having consulted though with the other members of the Alliance, the five other ports along this coast, is that we will accept handing over control on two conditions. The first would be that when a new provisional government is established we want an agreement that there will be a member of our alliance on it, and in addition that the trade union movement will be guaranteed a seat at the table so to speak. If you grant us that then we will, for 15% more than the usual wage, hand over the port and sign on to work for your project."

Chaudhuri was thankfully devoid of many people, less than a few tens of thousands. It didn't take long though for the news of KASA and the Morelanders arrival to have spread. People began approaching the cricket stadium seeking news. Meanwhile Suraj Kumar, a man who had been left behind by the Bachchan administration to act as a kind of mayor, had a problem. He was almost universally hated. He had been in charge of making sure that the small amount of required work in the capital was carried out. Beyond that he had been the one to say whether an individual could stay in the city or had to leave for some far flung commune somewhere in the countryside. Families had been split up, children left behind in the capital to receive an education for future administrative roles while their parents had been sent off to work the land. As a result it had only been the vast numbers of the armed forces that had been around his residence that had stopped people seeking him for vengence. Those troops had melted away now and as a result Kumar was isolated. He'd already runaway from a mob that had gathered outside the palace, only around 40 people but they had all been carrying guns and knives. Now he was scurrying around the city trying to find a way to the cricket stadium or bump into some of those Morelanders that he'd heard of. He'd all but made the stadium when a group of people spotted him and yelled at him, two men began chasing him. He ran as fast as he could towards the stadium yelling for help.

Meanwhile KASA had made a decision. They would bring as many people as possible in their contingent to the capital and while Bachchan had once kept a ring of steel around the place to enforce his will they would do their best to enforce a kind of quarantine. Their people out in the country had already estimated some 150,000 people were packing up and heading back towards Chaudhuri. The "troops" as they were would try and encourage people to submit to only heading into the North of the city where they had yet to find any outbreaks, meanwhile they'd try and get the Morelanders to set up a testing programme.

King Timur III may have been a young monarch at just 18 years of age and he may not have paid the most attention at school but he knew enough history to know the disasters that had befallen Safraen because of this Kaiju virus. There was no way he was intending to allow it to reach Renaku. As a result he was preparing to take some drastic action. He had his Minister of Defence set up checkpoints at every known crossing point between Renaku and Kritamala. There had been a long period of inactivity between the two nations so as a result it wasn't too many active roads. Each had a unit set up with a few armoured vehicles and teams of soldiers. Next he had members of the armies medical teams prepared and after doing his best to send word to people from KASA had them push 10km into Kritamala. The units moved with an armed escort but flew no Renaku flags, instead just simple white banners. Once inside Kritamala they found some uninhabited area close to the roads and set up makeshift centres. They would in the coming days fan out across their zones offering help, and potentially medicine for the virus.

If you grant us that then we will, for 15% more than the usual wage, hand over the port and sign on to work for your project."

With this Abbas guy putting forward a proposal it was left to Lt-Col Lavr Konstantinov to start discussions with Ayaan Mhasalkar, their KASA representative. "What do you think? I mean we're happy to pay these guys but the real issue is whether you are willing or able to give these people a voice in your new provisional government."

"I think there is every possibility that could happen. You can tell them we accept" Mhasalkar nodded as they turned back to Abbas.

"It seems you've a deal." Konstantinov extended a hand towards the dockworker. "Now if you're agreeable can you give us a tour of the facility? We could really do with getting a handle on what the situation is." The situation seemed to calm as Abbas motioned to the men he had on the gates and they were pulled open allowing the Lodjains to gain access to the docks without as much as a shot being fired. Konstantinov called for his junior officers to bring him some of their supplies which he ordered to be shared with the dockers. "I'm sorry to have to ask this" There would of course be a rather awkward moment ahead now. "But we've reports of a worrying virus spreading in parts of the nation. Can we ask if any of your team are ill at the moment? If so we'll have to take steps to quarantine them and anyone they've come into contact with, we've some supplies that we can use to treat the condition so the sooner we find out the better. If they're ill they'll have things like a fever and irritability."

While Kostantinov dealt with Abbas it was Warrant Officer Max Vladivac who was left to do the real work. The experienced NCO was finding places for the men to stay. He was busy marking out where each unit was to sleep and where vehicles would be parked. Despite the fact that they'd been welcomed in the Lodjains weren't fully confident that the situation would be smooth sailing. The port seemed in decent working order except for things just needing a bit of TLC but that would be a job for the engineers of their unit.

While the big wigs dealt with the situation 18 year old Isaak Menshev and his friend Sergi Ruzniv were coming up with their own plan. They were busy wandering around the port supposedly looking for as much fuel as they could find, what in fact they were hunting for was fishing equipment. They'd seen the villages further down the coast and figured they'd be great for fishing, a hobby both boys loved seeing as they came from fishing villages on the islands of Lodja. They planned to see if the commander would let them out for some free time fishing but first they had to find some rods or something. They began approaching the workers in hopes that they might have a few stashed away.

Caprice Ares had ensured that the agreement with Shashi Mhasalkar was all paid up. His appointed bank accounts had been stuffed as requested, the arrangements to move further funds and goods to him had been established and everything was ready to go. The first shipment had arrived at the airport. It wasn't anything underhand. It was merely a collection of rugs and some "unsalvagable" military uniforms that would be getting recycled back in Bakkermaya, or at least that was what the paperwork said. They'd prepared themselves to deal with any questions asked on the airfield and even if someone looked inside the crates that sat waiting to be loaded they would find nothing odd. The only difference between the documents and the truth was the fact that these uniforms would be sold to buyers around the world looking to kit out their own milita, terrorist strike force or rebellion. It was small fry to Caprice's father, Albanus, but it was a way to test their system in a rather low stakes way. Establish the route, establish the routine of the Ares aircraft coming, dropping off legitimate aid supplies and then leaving with some local products such as they had now. All they were doing after all was supporting the local economy. The aircraft was now empty and soon the loading began. Caprice sat watching pleased that everything was going well. About an hour later the aircraft and its cargo lifted off heading back to Bakkermaya.

It was the next morning that she received word that everything had gone according to plan. The goods had been offloaded and were already on the way to some nefarious contact of Caprice's father. It was time to up the stakes. "Shashi" She phoned the Major. "So far our routes working, I'd like something more exotic next shipment, something that could fit in say an engine sized box, we're exporting used vehicle parts next.....what can you get me?"

The Cenneg search of the base had turned up nothing to much to worry about. As they had been told there was missing fuel, a few ration packs, even a few medical supplies but nothing very much of concern. Things could easily be replaced and short of the missing helicopter there wasn't anything that could cause anyone harm. Brigadier Darcy Hendricks listened to Major Shinfields report and was seemingly worried about something he found. "Sir, I think the local officers aren't telling us the whole truth. We've a few concerns but I can't think of much we can do beyond what we've done." He handed the senior officer a tablet that had a series of images pre-loaded. The Brigadier scanned through them and seemed perplexed.

"What I'm looking at Major just seems to be warehouse or hangar floors." He kept scrolling through the images.

"Sir, if you look carefully." Shinfield zoomed in on the image that was on the screen. "The locals weren't exactly good at keeping the place neat and tidy. When you get into the back of hangars and the like into the stores its covered in dust and cobwebs. Like kit hasn't been moved for years, but also like the Kritamalans have never heard of brooms. If you look there." He pointed to the screen. "We've perfectly circular voids in the dust. Now normally I'd say that means somethings been moved to somewhere else but we know what we should have, we know whats missing according to that officer here and judging by how clean those voids are I'd say whatever was there was moved maybe two days ago max. There is a lot of kit missing if we assume those voids had something in two days ago, the problem being I'm not certain what the stuff is because the Kritamalans have no proper inventory system. We found all manner of stuff alongside stuff with totally different uses. That void could have been caused by a stack of say motorbike tyres or some large calibre artillery shells. Either way I think we need to perhaps carry out some searches in areas away from what we've been told are store rooms."

"I get your point Major, good spot. Carry on, do the searches and let me know what you find."

"We don't know the size of the outbreak." Sally Westbrooke said "But we all know the impact this virus can have."
"I know." Serenity said "I'm at the ten year memorial in Safraen in a few weeks." she sighed, it was just the pair of them and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Richard Chambers in the Empress's study "A near perfect storm of transitional period with all the upheaval potential that brings and that virus rears its head again. If we don't know the size what are you recommending?"
"Throw what we can at it." Sally said "I can take some medical personnel in, we can fly vaccines, drugs, food, supplies and all that in as well. We'll need an isolated facility..."
"Ok." Serenity said "Do it. Richard get on the phone to Renaku, Safraen, Clysperis and the rest of the neighbourhood. Let's start coordinating efforts to keep this contained where it is."
"Will do." Richard said
"I'm going order the Iona Azurewind, Kyogre and the Stardust into the area, that'll take them a few days but will that do for an isolated facility if this becomes worst case?" Serenity asked
"Yes." Sally said
"How I'd love some Valkyrie's but they're not ready yet." Serenity said "Let's get on with it."

Over the next few minutes the trio were making phone calls, Serenity was giving out the orders, Sally was organising the logistics and Richard, after a short trip back to his own office at the Foreign Office, was sat behind his own desk making phone calls to other nations in the locality.
