McKenna Speaks On Troyes

"Regional determination does not stop at the waters of the Illumic; just as Rokkenjima's military presence was no longer necessary in the Illumic so too is Seaforth's presence in the Shaw no longer necessary.

Speaking on behalf of the Empress, who spent the better part of the day with Princess Sophia following her rescue, Imperial Liaison for Foreign Affairs James McKenna spoke with the RBC on the matter of Troyes. "High level diplomatic talks are presently taking place between our nations and, while little movement has been reported, the Empress has remained unmoved in her position on the matter of Troyes. The Empress supports, fully, the right to self-determination for the Peoples of Troyes and Marseilles and, just as a day dawned where the military presence of Rokkenjima was no longer required in the Illumic, the day has long passed that a Seaforthian military presence in the Strait of Shaw is required. I say this as a proud Seaforthian," he took pause, "and I would hope that King Andrew sees the folly in clinging to past glories and prestige; neither such pursuits are worth the sacrifice of Seaforthian dignity, no, this is a pursuit in the folly of ego and it's one which will be lost if this course is insisted upon by the Kingdom. As I said nearly a year ago, "There is no question in my mind a continued Seaforthian presence in Troyes has long outlived its welcome and Troyes must be returned to Marseilles and finally answer the call President Papin made in January of 2017 for all CTOMM forces to withdraw from the nation. Regardless of Seaforth's incorporation of Troyes, a decision the Imperial Government does not recognize as holding any legal basis, Troyes must be returned to Marseilles. There is, quite simply, no other path forward. Seaforth must go."

"Regional determination does not stop at the waters of the Illumic; just as Rokkenjima's military presence was no longer necessary in the Illumic so too is Seaforth's presence in the Strait of Shaw no longer necessary. A continued insistence of King Andrew to keep his forces in Troyes, I believe, is something that will be continued by the forces of ego and the pursuit of prestige, opening the Kingdom up to the greatest threat it has faced since our victory over the Seaforthian Catholic Church, only this time our undoing will be at our own hands. As a Seaforthian, and a McKenna, I call upon King Andrew to reconsider his position and not consign us to a path which sees us fighting the inevitable; we won't win this one, and we'll deserve the defeat we'll be handed if Seaforth insists on maintaining a heavy hand over Troyes. As the Imperial Liaison of the Empress I would add, Rokkenjima will see that the spirit of regional determination which saw Rokkenjima evicted from the Illumic will inevitably see Seaforth evicted from the Shaw. It's only a matter of whether Seaforth walks away with more dignity than Rokkenjima did from the Illumic at this point, this is not a process which any man, regardless if he's King or not, in Seaforth can bring to a halt."

In related regional developments the Imperial Rokkenjiman Navy announced that a transit of the Illumic Channel would occur for the Excalibur and her associated vessels, which includes the battleship IRN Edward Truden returning from a visit to Clysperis. The vessels of the Action Group will be rendezvousing with elements of the Imperial Fusanese Navy for replenishment just south of the Illumic from IFNS Kaiketsu, a Kyōkyū-class Fast Combat Support Ship, and IFNS Heike, the lead ship of her class of replenishment oilers.

Kensington sighed, having sat there with nary a word in the whole affair. "Look, King Andrew," he paused as he looked over to Evanthe and Serenity before looking back over to Andrew, "I'm a no-nonsense kind of guy, but I think you missed the point Evanthe was trying to make there. She wasn't dangling anything over you as a price, rather, she was highlighting the hypocrisy on display, using Rishiri as a counterpoint to Troyes. I'm sure if Rokkenjima had dug in its heels and declined to dismantle QAMB and agree to provisions it otherwise wouldn't agree to we'd have seen East Moreland, Seaforth, hell the whole of the Illumic, band together to kick them out and they'd have been justified in doing so. We've the Illumic Crisis 2.0, instead though it's in the Strait of Shaw and it's Seaforth that's on the other end of the whole affair this time. Hell you can fight this, nothing's stopping you from doing so, but what Evanthe was asking of you was to have the knowledge and humility that Empress Saisei lacked when the initial Rishiri affair went down, walk ahead while maintaining dignity because those were some of Rokkenjima's not finest moments, so to say."

"I'll leave the floor open to the ladies now," he said motioning to Evanthe and Serenity, "whoever should wish to add on to that first."

"I believe that is quite fair, let's go forth with that understanding. And yes, the elephant in the room in regards to that line of discussion, but I believe I may have a solution. What if, for our purposes, nuclear cooperation takes place in the academic sphere? Our schools could collaborate on research, something such as this would not see an exchange of materials yet it would allow for the Clysperi to learn how best to utilize, operate and deploy the resources at our disposal. In return, the Kingdom would be willing to provide natural gas at a discounted rate, as I do not see our membership in OPEN surviving another year as it is."

Economics and Industry / Exports of Zolo

Exports of Zolo

The economy of the Republic of Zolo is an exportation-based economy, as the vast majority of the GDP comes from the export of agricultural goods, minerals, lumber, and a few manufactured products; and the vast majority of the population has very little purchasing power. Fruits grown in the Republic of Zolo are eaten all across the Mundus, and beef, cheese, coffee, chocolate, spices, and sugar from Zolo can be found in supermarkets around the globe. The low prices of Zoloan exports are guaranteed by extremely low labor costs, extensive agricultural subsidies, and the relatively few environmental regulations in the country. Agricultural products are especially cheap because the government sells and rents-out land for extremely cheap to commercial farmers.
The country also exports significant amounts of cobalt, lithium, copper, uranium, and gold; all of which are mined in relatively large quantities in Zolo and exported to be used by more developed and industrialized countries, especially in their renewable energy and tech industries.
The country's massive rainforests are an abundant source of "exotic" and high-quality wood in bulk, which has contributed to a continual process of deforestation. But not to worry, investors! There's lots of rainforest to go around, and plenty of military support to ensure there's no disruption of production on behalf of environmentalists or the native peoples.
The government of the Republic of Zolo is business-friendly and takes seriously the needs of investors, be they Zoloan or international: governments or businesses which choose to partner with the government of Zolo or to do business in the country will find it to be an accommodating business partner and an environment conducive to high profits! (if sometimes at the expense of being ethically questionable)

Diplomacy and Events / Re: Our corner of Albion

Prince Maximus Astralix looked over the table that was set up for the conference. It sat in the Baron's Chamber, a room that in truth had little to do with the nobility. It was simply a room in the Palace attached to the main throne room, which in truth was more of a large function space nowdays, that in days past someone waiting to be enobled could wait with their retinue. Some of those retinue's in the distant past were large and so the room would be more than sufficent for their needs. It had no windows as it sat in the middle of the Palace but a large domed skylight made it feel airy. The walls were made of white plaster with columns holding up the roof more for decoration than purpose. The room itself was perfectly square as was the table which had been set up, "No head of the table, no foot of the table" Romilius, the Palace's head of staff, informed him. "I believe it will be the best form of symbolism for what you are trying to achieve. Each delegation we've given three chairs at the table but they can fit up to five people if they want, the tiny Lodjain ladies maybe seven." He chuckled. "We've then given each delegation a table behind that has many more seats." He pointed to the electronic tablet in each delegations place. "We've sent word to their aides that the tablet will allow them to summon drinks, food and anything else we think they may need." He picked one up and tapping on the screen it was not to disimilar to the tablets used by the staff at various restaurants. "We've a nice Abertonian red, a local white, whiskey from the Cenneg and a host of the other good stuff."

"Very good Romilius" the Prince said as he returned the tablet to its place stepped back and not satisfied returned to the table and straightened it. "Who are the guard of the day?" He asked.

Without needing to consult his notes the ever efficient Romilius said "The Iron Guard Sir"

"Well its not as good as the Vostroyan but they look pretty enough" the Prince was ever prideful in his old unit and even though he believed they were better troops he had to admit the Iron Guards dark blue and yellow trimmed dress uniform was the nicest of the two uniforms. He walked through the Palace casting an eye over the staff who were hurriedly preparing final touches for the meeting. He made his way outside as he was told that his guests were beginning to arrive. The handful of tourists who had got up early enough to see the Palace this morning were moved out the way of the gate by members of the Navis Imperialis who were manning the outer guard today and thus not in dress uniform. The khaki clad naval men politely but sternly gave instructions to those slow to move and one old lady found her shopping bag picked up by a small naval rating who offered a supporting arm to help her cross the road. He tipped his hat to her as he rejoined his friends guarding the entrance with rifles easily held should any action begin.

The first of the mini-covoys entered the palace. It was a duo of black limo's with a green military patrol vehicle at the front and one at the back with motorbike outriders at the flank. Tanith was nothing if not overefficient at utilising its military. The next would arrive in two minutes and the Prince knew that would be almost to the second and so as the Iron Guard formed an honour tunnel to welcome the first guest Maximus moved into position. "Welcome to Tanith" He said warmly.

Max followed the King mindful to keep one step behind, he didn't know whether this was etiquette here but he had been brought up by his father, a former Steward at Northfort Palace, that it was respectful to "In times of battle stand before your King at all other times stand behind him." and the words had become a kind of habit. Now as he began to age he often found himself not walking quiet as quickly so now it became an almost default motion. Max looked at the photo, it wasn't a difficult style to emulate and he can make them fancy if required. It was a style of blade not really popular among the Morelanders he often made things for, they preferred swords that tended to be heavier and would have been used both in the saddle and on the ground but he recognised the historical symbolism. He was satisfied that the King seemingly was a man that David could have done a deal with and so was comfortable doing so himself. "I think it'll take me quiet a bit of time to make that many swords." He smiled looking at the tapesty map, "If that's the case would you mind if my wife came out and joined me while I do the work? If its a problem then forget the request. As for getting to work I'll need the following" He removed a notebook from his pocket and scribbled down weights of metals, powders, fuels and the like and ripped the page from the notebook and presented it to Timur. "If everything is in order Your Majesty as soon as I have those items then I can begin the work."

Andrew busied himself while the two left his office, he had things to be doing and frankly the situation now was little different if any to when the two had arrived. He made a phone call or two and then  before his aide let them back in went and had a piss simply to make them wait a little. He'd been rather pleased to get the support from Rokkenjima regarding flights and the like it now seemed Evanthe lacked any authority to speak without a script, what worried Andrew was who was writing the script, was it the Rokkenjiman throne or the Empress from Achkaerin. "So the last hour or so we've been speaking has been a waste" Andrew began. "You and me Evanthe had reached an agreement of some future action, now you place conditions upon that." He sighned, "We go from authorising me to use airfields to raking up matters your nation had already reached agreements over as though holding it over me as a price for helping a friend. I am therefore going to ignore that request. My flights will continue just having much longer turn arounds. He then turned to Serenity. "You really should not attempt to be using the teachings of the Cult to persuade me. A verse on sacrifice is not about to persuade me to hand over something that would cost my people and my nation a great deal without things in return. I have people who rely on Troyes for their future and you think I should walk away from that without a whimper. As things stand under the arrangements you have brought forth Seaforth gets nothing. That is unacceptable. Now the last time I checked your an Azurewind not a Sauzee. You don't know what he'll give me or not, furthermore you don't know what talks or not are going on." He added. "Now if you two are either unable or unwilling to help me then I have matters to deal with." He looked at his wristwatch. "I can give you ten more minutes unless we're going to see some movement on your side?"

War and Conflict / A Subterranean Fire
« Last post by zoelikestrees on May 12, 2024, 07:59:03 PM »
In a sense, the Republic of Zolo was founded in war, and has been engaged in an asymmetric sort of warfare against "its own" population since its founding. Before its independence, Zolo was a colony founded by the violent expulsion or subjugation of the indigenous peoples by the settlers from Albion, but after its independence the state's policy of warfare against the native people and annexing their land continued. Much of the land claimed by the fledgling Republic, granted to it by its former colonial rulers, was still occupied and claimed by the indigenous peoples at the time of independence: they never ceded their lands or recognized the right of the Republic to occupy them. Between 1925 and 1955 the Republic fought 11 separate wars within "its own" borders against the Zolo, Sebani, Z'Boju, Lanuyana, and Si'lokan peoples, whose struggles for survival and autonomy were classified as "rebellions". In 1968 there was a massive cross-ethnic rebellion which was violently suppressed by the government over the span of 7 years in a brutal civil war which killed 4 million people; which ended with the destruction of the rebel groups and the more complete political subjugation of the indigenous peoples to the state, but which won (on paper, at least) equal legal and civil rights for indigenous citizens of Zolo and forced the government to legalize the Popular Front. Since 1968 there have been no large-scale wars, but there has been a near-perpetual low-intensity conflict between the indigenous peoples and corporate interests backed by the state intent on taking their land for commercial agriculture, forestry, or mining. Furthermore, indigenous activists have struggled to draw international attention to what they describe as a policy of "systematic criminalization and mass incarceration" of indigenous people by the police. In recent years, these issues have only intensified. Social tensions are high as people protest land theft, police brutality, and mass incarceration; all while the corporate rulers of the country seem to only accelerate their policies of land theft to expand commercial agriculture and mining, and give more funding to the police and military each year while leaving social services underfunded. Cultural, ethnic, religious, and class tensions are simmering. Now it seems that the country may be drawing closer to open war, as indigenous groups express their unwillingness to accept the current colonial state of affairs.

1st Communique of the Zolo Liberation Front [ZLF]

This morning, May 10 2024, we attacked and destroyed 12 of the enemy's police cruisers in retaliation for the murder and kidnapping of Zolo people by the police. In the last year alone, these colonial occupation forces have murdered at least 438 Zolo. The police are a colonial occupying army on our land whose sole function is the terrorization of the native people of this land, including the Zolo, Sebani, Z'Boju, Lanuyana, and Si'lokan peoples, to maintain their exploitation and rule by the colonizers. They have stolen the name of our people for their evil colonizing state, for they have no culture of their own: all that they have they have stolen from our peoples. Right now, more than 300,000 Zolo are held captive by the prison system, kidnapped so that they may be forced to labor to enrich those same colonizers who claim ownership of our lands, who hoard all the wealth that we produce. Every blow struck against the colonial occupying army by the people is a step closer to freedom. So long as the occupiers remain, our people and our land will not be able to breathe. We will fight so that we may live with freedom and dignity. The land cries out to us to defend it from desecration, as the colonizers spoil our waters, poison the ground, cut all the trees, and kill all the animals. We are the land, and every assault upon it is an assault upon us, just as every assault upon our people is an assault upon the land. The colonizers cannot tolerate a people who will not sell their dignity, their culture, and their mother the land. They have no value but money, but for us, the colonized people, we have no greater value than the land; for we know it is the land that feeds us, and, above all, the land which gives us dignity. We call upon all the peoples trapped within this "Republic" to join us in struggling to overthrow our colonial shackles, and we call upon the people of the entire world to intervene to sanction the colonial regime and arm its indigenous peoples-- for the sake of the ecological wellbeing of our planet, for the sake of universal brotherhood, and to prove that all their talk about human rights is not just talk. Those who love freedom will not bear the colonial entity to survive any longer.

Death to the colonizers!
Long live the Zolo people!

David paused for a moment, "what rights have your people lost that you need to restore?" he asked. This could potentially be a problem, a spanner in the works depending on what the answer was. East Moreland may be rather autocratic compared to many but they did pride themselves on people having their rights protected.
