Leading Hand Yani Walker; RoKS Grogon, Off Cadell, Krimeon Sea

The Gorgon - one of the ROKN's six G-Class diesel-electric attack submarines - had been rapidly re-routed from a routine training exercise in the western Krimeon to monitor shipping around the port at Cadell shortly after the outbreak of trouble in the city, amidst unfounded rumour that an invasion was underway, and had remained on station since to provide what assistance she could. Now, another ROKN group was entering the area, the marine carrier RoKS Mallee escorted by the frigate RoKS Finke, although unbeknownst to the newcomers affairs aboard the Gorgon were rather less than regular.

In the early hours of that morning, a group of sailors had staged a mutiny. Twelve of the crewmen from the vessel's compliment of thirty-one were Noongars - the native tribe inhabiting the area ashore - and one of them, Sub-Lieutenant Nelson Sellebi, had been in contact with his family ashore, among them his younger brother Selo, and had grown convinced that "the revolution", as he put it, was coming. Upon hearing that the Mallee was inbound, Nelson and his co-conspirators had moved swiftly and ruthlessly to eliminate the white officers and those of the men who could not be brought round to their way of thinking.

Their skeleton crew was already at action stations as their prey came into range, the sub sitting as deep as she could in the shallow water while Yani listened in on the passive sonar.

"Range to target, Mister Walker?" Nelson enquired, in a tone of hushed excitement.

"Fifteen kilometers and closing, cap'n" Yani responded, adopting the officer's new self-styling "Well within range"

"And time to target?"

"Nine minutes and change, cap'n"

"Bridge to torpedo room" Nelson got on the intercom system "Bridge to torpedo room. Prepare to fire tubes one through three against contact Sierra Two. How copy, over?"

"Bridge, this is torpedo room" Buzzed the reply "Tubes prepared and ready for firing. Awaiting your orders, cap'n"

"Fire"

A few seconds of silence followed before the first hiss was head, as launch tube one was flooded, followed swiftly by the other two.

"Should we move off our firing point, cap'n?" Yani ventured, after counting a full minute on his watch.

"A sound idea, Mister Walker" Nelson smiled darkly "Mister Ebano, take us away, if you please"

Unfortunately for Yani and his fellow mutineers, their target was to evade destruction that day. Their torpedo salvo was picked up by the sonar room aboard Finke as soon as their on-board active sonar units went live, giving both warships just enough warning to fire off sonar decoys and maneuver violently, much to the chagrin of the flight crews aboard Mallee. One torpedo nevertheless found its target, striking the Mallee in the bow and shaking the big ship violently, although she was to remain afloat as her watertight compartments were sealed. Initially fooled by the decoys, the remaining two torpedoes surged ahead, their own sonar units renewing their attempts to find a target beyond the ROKN surface group. Fatefully, the long-range electric torpedoes found their way towards the shipping lanes out of Cadell and the mouth of the Yarra river...

Major Keith Saunders; Benjamin J Hall Airport, Cadell, Kaedwen

'A' Company's helicopters swept in low over Cadell in the searing mid-afternoon heat, heading inland from the coast towards the local airfield on the southeast side of town. A plume of smoke was still rising from the police headquarters complex at the east end of town, although fire fighters could be seen on the scene. Aside from the damage, the town was still a little rough around the edges; the seafront running along the west edge of the town was typical of the cheaper sort of resort, while a few hundred meters inland the town centre was every inch the typical derivative of provincial small town. Down along the river to the north of the town centre a few of the docks were still active, although the whole of that side of town was largely run-down, the tenements and squats in that area being rather overdue a visit from the heavy mob, in Keith's opinion. To the south and east of the town, low suburban sprawl in the typical Kaedweni style, making full use of the ample space and cheap land.

Flaring for landing alongside the Airport's single runway, Keith's soldiers were already poised to disembark when the pilot suddenly went back hard on the throttle and broke off to the left, throwing men and equipment around the cabin. From out behind them, a blast and a flash, followed by the crackle of distant machine-gun fire.

"What's going on out there, pilot?" Keith grabbed hold of the trailing handset providing comms with the flight crew compartment.

"Contact... contact... Wait, out" Come the broken response down the line, the flight crew having rather more pressing matters to attend to. Seconds later, a burst of rounds tore through the aircraft, sending the soldiers sprawling once again.

"We're hit, we're hit" The pilot came back on the line "I'm putting her down, sir... Brace, incoming!" The helicopter pulled a another hard left, banking steeply and spilling countermeasures all around. Another hiss and another flash. Closer, but a miss this time. Then they were down, landing heavily behind the main terminal building. Keith fought his way through into the cockpit as the embarked soldiers scrambled out.

"What the hell's going on out there?" He shouted to the pilot, straining to make himself heard above the scream of the still-active engines.

"Contact out to the east, sir. Automatic weapons and MANPADS" Came the equally strained response "Three is hit! Two made it out with us - Four and Five are still on the ground"

"Cheers fella" Keith shouted back, giving a double thumbs-up before scampering off to join the men from the first two helicopters forming up behind the cover of the terminal building, amounting to a single platoon - No 1 - and the company headquarters. No 2 platoon's helicopter had been hit in the ambush, while No 3 platoon and the support weapons platoon were still on the runway, and could be heard starting to lay down fire back in the direction of their attackers. His Company Sergeant Major, Jim Gordon, was already having a heated conversation on the radio net, while No 1 platoon's Sergeant corralled his lads together and prepared them for action. Second Lieutenant Guy Wiley, No 1 platoon's commander, approached Keith with a grimace, attempting to re-fit his helmet over a fresh dressing on his head.

"Sir" The subaltern began "What's the plan, sir? Number one platoon is primed and ready to go, sir"

"Nice one mate" Keith replied, glancing at Guy's head before pulling the bloke along with him towards the CSM "What's happened to your head there, mate?"

"Buggers shot me ear off, sir" Wiley responded, adding with a smirk "Always was a bit big, sir, looks like they've saved me a few bob on a plastic surgeon is all"

"Good lad" Keith chuckled despite himself, before turning to the Sergeant Major "Right Jim, what's the situation out there?"

"Number two platoon are still assessing their casualties, sir, but is sounds like a nasty one. Weapons platoon reports they are winning the firefight, one firing position identified on the roof of Big Dick's, three story building five-hundred meters east of their position. Contact with local friendly forces established, some of Yarra Commando Group's blokes are headed over to clear the firing point now"

"Alright" Keith decided "This is what we're going to do..."

Freddie Xuma; Big Dick's Halfway Inn, Cadell, Kaedwen

Up on the roof of the hotel overlooking the airstrip, Freddie Xuma's DLF section were beginning to feel the pinch, with nine K9 GPMGs now trained on their position - three from No 3 platoon and another six from the weapons platoon - Freddie was beginning to get the impression that they were exceeding their welcome. Down on the ground, one of the helicopters was burning, emitting a thick, black smoke as it did so, while two more were riddled with bullet holes. Taking a brief peak over the parapet, he could see the soldiers sheltering in the low ground on the far side of the airstrip, some of them surely in a bad way. His guys on the roof had bled too, 'Mini' Joe Tambo had been hit in the head by a machine-gun round and died on the spot, while Mac Tsarto was down with an arm being dressed with some urgency. That left them with eight men to evacuate the wounded plus their own machine-gun and the missile launcher used to down the helicopter.

"Brothers!" He yelled above the racket of firing "Our duty is done! Prepare to withdraw!"

"Aye sir!" Came the enthusiastic response from his remaining fighters. With a little effort, they made ready to move, one man hoisting the body of Joe Tambo over his shoulder, while another led Mac towards the stairwell by his good arm. Drawing his Uzi submachine gun, Freddie led them down the stairs to the ground floor, scattering the few guests bold enough to venture out amidst the sound of gunfire, and out through the back. Happily for Freddie, the hated hotel manager was stood here, though rather unhappily he was in conversation with a pair of policemen with rifles on their shoulders.

"Xuma?" The manager whirled around upon hearing the door slam open "What the fuck are you doing you degenerate n-?"

The manager was cut down by a burst from Freddie's Uzi, which also caught one of the policemen  while the other scrambled for cover, bringing his rifle into his shoulder. Pushing forward, Banzu Mzkuni was next through the door, firing their GPMG from the hip. The surviving policeman turned and fled off around the side of the building, allowing the DLF fighters to pile into the two Landies waiting for them, Freddie taking the time to make damn sure that the hotel manager was no longer in the land of the living.

Turning out onto the main road, they were briefly confronted by a platoon of local commandos, who were approaching the hotel cautiously on foot. Gunning their engines, the two DLF vehicles raced through their midst without so much as a shot being fired, disappearing down the first side-street they came to. They'd gotten away with it. Hopefully.

Dr Penelope Forsyth; Havenstraat Neighbourhood Clinic, Aiken, Kaedwen

The Havenstraat district of Aiken was, in the diplomatic language of the clinic matron, a less than desirable part of the world. In the slightly less diplomatic phraseology of her father, it was a wretched hive of scum-sucking bottom feeders. The wrong side of the tracks - both proverbial, and in this case, real. The kind of place where if you hit a red light you don't stop. The kind of place where the law was written in the flash of a blade or the crack of a gun. While there had been trouble in Aiken the night before - the district council building had been blown up and the chief of police assassinated - to the denizens of Havenstraat this was little of note.

In her two years at the clinic, Penelope had seen plenty of locals come through her doors in various states of disrepair, but this was something else. The small waiting room was awash with vomit and excrement, as was the sliver of the pavement which she could see beyond the clinic, and the poor girl on the front desk was battling valiantly to triage the rabble crowding around her. From the bits and pieces she could catch from the steady stream of patients brought through to her office, it seemed to be some kind of outbreak of d and v, not unheard of with the poor sanitation in some of the tenements, but for so many to come in at once was not something she'd seen before.

Just as one patient was pushed out the door, there was a rise in the hubbub from the waiting room. A few seconds later, the matron appeared in the doorway looking uncharacteristically flustered.

"Doctor Forsyth?" She asked, her tone firm but hurried "There's a group of gentlemen outside with their friend on a stretcher. He's unresponsive and the duty nurse can't find a pulse. There's an ambulance en-route, but could you come and see what you can do? They're getting agitated out here?"

"Sure Kara, you can send them in if you like" Penelope replied calmly "Save clogging up the corridors"

"Okay" Kara looked pensive "But I'll send someone else in with you. These boys are real riled up"

And so they were. No sooner had the maton withdrawn then a dozen men piled into her small office, carrying between them a figure on some soiled bed sheets. The figure was bearded and clearly rather elderly, and was laid upon her treatment table with surprising reverence by the men.

"Doctor, doctor" The closest one to her began "Look, look! You must help the chief! Bad men have poisoned him!"

"I'll do what I can" She responded amicably "Could you give me some space to treat him?"

"Yes, yes, of course" At the speaker's insistence, emphasised with a couple of choice words, the group parted to let Penelope through to the bedside. The patient looked quite dead, to the point of beginning to cool, not that the group looked likely to take well to such a prognosis, so she went to work and hoped the ambulance crew would be able to break the news more gently, and hopefully to fewer of them at once. The talk of a couple of the men did worry her, though; the once who had spoken so brusquely to her was now making some very visual claims as to what he would do if the chief - the patient was some variety of tribal honourary, she gathered - came to harm, though little did he know he was dead already. Another of the men was postulating as to the identity of the perpetrator, and at least one name seemed to get the group in agreement, though it meant little to Penelope. With slight lack of awareness, at least one of them was cursing 'those white devils' who were apparently behind it somewhere, although Penelope did not feel so much like a devil at that point.

After what seemed like an age, the ambulance came to relieve them of their charge, and the group thankfully dispersed, although the clinic was still crowded. Penelope called the matron aside.

"That group you left with me" She asked "Did you get any ID off any of them?"

"Yeah, off one of them I did" Kara replied, looking thoughtful "Plus the dead guy, why? You think they're up to no good?"

"I do. They're not happy bunnies, and when they figure out their mate's snuffed it they'll be even less happy. A couple of them were giving me real pointed looks in there"

"Think we'll get trouble?"

"I think it's a possibility, yeah"

"Alright Doc, I'll get on the phone now, see if the police'll help us out"

"Cheers Kara"

"No dramas"

Brad Eastwood; I15 Border Checkpoint, Tabland, Kaedwen

Opposite Major Rupsys' checkpoint, the post on the Kaedweni side of the border consisted of a couple of tin-roofed single-story buildings and a courtyard for the more in-depth variety of searches. Two dozen border guards were in residence, though their side of the border had been closed since that morning. The post commander, Captain Jack Barendorff, came out onto the sentry point where Brad was sheltering from the afternoon sun as the rattle of tracks echoed across the border.

"Are we being invaded out here, guardsman?" The captain enquired casually, adjusting the hang of his long K1 rifle on its sling "If so, could you ask them to keep it down out there?"

"Not yet we're not, sir" Brad - known as Clint to his mates - replied with a sly smile "If they try you'll soon know; I'll scream like a girl and run away"

"Fair dinkum, Clinty" Captain Jack smiled his broad Mallee smile "Look mate, there's bugger all else for us to do up here than piss and wait for some bloody ethnic to take a shot at us. Fancy coming to meet the new neighbours?"

"You sure they'll appreciate that, sir?" Brad raised an eyebrow "Sure enough the old lot were solid, but you know how 'proper' army types can get. Go all bloody Napoleon soon 's you give 'em a taste of power. Know what I mean?"

"Fair point mate, but there's no harm in trying, eh?"

"If you say so, sir"

"Look, you're off watch in a minute, coming or not?"

"You know what sir, I think I will. Might want to leave the rifles here though, eh. Just on the off chance they mistake us for an invading horde or something"

"Fair dinkum. I'll lock mine away now, come grab me when Ed gets round to relieving you"

So, a couple of minutes later, the two men in khaki bush hats and short shorts made the short walk down the side of the road to the Valokchian side of the border while the remaining Kaedweni border guards made some friendly bets as to which would be shot first. Unable to resist, Captain Jack smiled at the first Valokchian border guard he came across, vaguely recognizing the man as one of their regular neighbors, though he couldn't recall having talked with him before.

"G'day mate" The captain began "Your lads having a party over here or something? Look, I know these're excitable times, but would you mind if we had a chat with your gaffer? Don't know about you, but we'd quite like to have a no-dramas day up here, you know how it is, have a quick chat now and stop some dill getting funny ideas about the other side later. All good mate?"

Police Captain Wilhelm de Kock; Whereabouts Unknown

Bright light. The sound of many booted feet on a concrete floor. The smell of... cheap aftershave?

"Wake up, mighty captain" A mocking voice. Rough hands grasping firmly "Bring him"

Hoisted aloft by many strong hands. Carried for... how long? A brief breeze of fresh air. Then a door opened, a blast of hot, humid air.

"Place him down there" Another voice, soft and cultured "Gently, oselula, this man is our guest here, is he not?"

"Yes, chieftain" The first voice again. Changed his tone "Do you wish anything else of me?"

"No, no. You may leave. Oh, but before you do, would you be so good as to remove this ghastly bag?"

"Of course, chieftain"

Blinding light, gradually resolving into an image. A domestic kitchen, quite a smart one, black granite surfaces and a large window at one end. In front of him, a breakfast bar with high stools. Above him sits a slight, frail man in a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up. His head is shaved, and on his dark skin a sheen of perspiration. Glasses, the old, half-moon variety with thin steel rims perched on a thin, slightly crooked nose. Familiar, somehow, yet distant.

"Good afternoon, Captain" He speaks with the same calm, cultured voice as before "Quite a night, wasn't it? Oh, believe me, I know - you look almost as bad as I feel" A vague, far away wistful smile "But you are not a stranger to these things, I think. Perhaps being on... the other side of proceedings has broadened your horizons somewhat, yes? Or maybe not... but that is besides the point..." A chuckle. He produced a carton of cheap orange juice and two rather chipped and sad-looking glasses "Perhaps you would like a drink, captain? The vitamins will do you good. Who knows, might even save your teeth from falling out" He smiled a gap-toothed old smile.

Wilhelm could scarcely manage a grunt in reply, but nodded his head painfully. Two glasses were filled, and one passed down to him. His hands were not restrained, in fact a little wriggle told him he was not restrained at all, though a polite cough from behind him was perhaps an indicator that exploring this avenue any further was not the best of life choices at that point.

"Perhaps an introduction is in order" The old man began again "I'll admit, a part of me had hoped such would not be required, but I can see in your eyes that you do not remember me as I remember you. I am Yagan, of the Noongar. High Chief, they call me, though in truth few of my tribe remain to be chiefed over" Another wistful look off into the distance. Then a chuckle "And this, this is not our first meeting in a professional context, oh no. Your face is known to me, even is mine is not to you, oh yes. But there is no need for bitterness, the past is gone, indeed it is, but the future is there for the taking. So, Captain, we come to the crux of the matter, oh yes we do; you are a man who has seen much - much of this I have seen also - and for your part, you shall face trial in time. But wanton cruelty is an abhorrence to the the gods, indeed. And so I will be offering you a choice in the matter, oh yes. You are not beyond redemption yet, oh no dear Captain, and with your cooperation we can bring many greater villains to justice, oh yes we can. And in return, you can be rehabilitated in the eyes of gods and men, you can"

Still attempting to gather his thoughts, Wilhelm could raise little more than a croak in response, although the cool juice was helping to revive him.

"No decision need me made just yet, oh no dear Captain" The High Chief crooned, an air of fatherly concern in his voice "I shall allow you time to consider, no hustler am I, oh no. We shall talk again later, and maybe you shall feel more talkative, yes yes"

"Return our guest to his quarters, could you my unyana?"

Inside the Kaedweni Crisis; Shocking Details Emerge

Shocking details have emerged today in the wake of a string of apparently coordinated insurgent attacks in Kaedwen, including allegations which - if confirmed to be true - could trigger a political scandal the likes of which the small Krimeon republic has never before seen.

According to leaked documents seen by Free Mundus Network journalists, Kaedweni security forces operating in the Yarra region - possibly among others - have engaged in a decades-long campaign of terror against the Djeragan people, the native inhabitants of the region who live largely segregated from the rest of Kaedweni society following a series of bitter conflicts fought between the Kaedweni Army and Djeragani freedom fighters in the twentieth century. This leak includes details of a campaign of kidnapping, intimidation and extra-judicial killings carried out by Kaedweni police and army units over the last two decades.

The Djeragan have long complained of poor treatment by the Kaedweni authorities, accusing them of imposing a state of 'soft segregation' through often refusing to grant official documentation to Djeragani individuals, many of whom live in dwellings the Kaedweni government considers to have been built illegally, preventing the Djeragan from moving out of their 'unofficial ghettos' due to often being unable to prove their identity or official residency status. These accusations are long-standing, and have long been denied by successive Kaedweni governments.

This latest leak, however, includes far more troubling details, including orders for named suspects to be taken 'dead or alive' ,guidelines on 'enhanced interrogation techniques' underwritten with the phrase 'NOT to be made public' and, perhaps most troublingly of all, a list of Djeragan detainees listed as 'liquidated'.

Along with the leaked documentation, which has yet to be verified, FMN's whistle-blower - who has asked not to be identified - included a call, in rather emotive language, for the international community to come to the aid of the Djeragan people and "bring the perpetrators of these heinous crimes to justice".

The Kaedweni government has so far declined to comment upon the validity or content of the leaks.

Nativist Insurgent Groups - Overview

Armed Nativist groups - freedom fighters or terrorists, dependent upon the semantics one wishes to adopt - were amongst the key players in the Kaedwen Emergency. This document contains an admittedly inexhaustive list of the names of these groups, their various acronyms and nicknames, as well as short details of their aims, areas of operation and methods. Note that, regardless of exact affiliation, most are simply referred to as 'ethnic insurgents' by the majority of the Kaedweni security forces tasked with opposing them.

Police Captain Wilhelm de Kock; Whereabouts Unknown

Wilhelm came round in a world of pain, from which his senses gradually discerned a few things about his surroundings. For one, a hessian sack had been thrown over his head, and tied around his neck. For another, he was handcuffed to something cold and metallic, through which odd echoes reverberated - some sort of pipework, most likely. It was fairly cool here, almost dank, and seemingly totally dark. Only his right arm was handcuffed, but his left ached like hell, and he just couldn't seem to get a grip of anything with his free hand. The smell was a strange mix of blood and stale urine, overlaying - strange as it seemed - fresh sawdust.

"Is this what death feels like?" He postulated openly to himself "Or is this just a dream?"

Selo Sellebi; DLF Safehouse, Cadell, Kaedwen

Come morning, the streets were empty, at least as far as Selo could see, looking out from a window in the run-down tenement block where the DLF - the Djeragan Liberation Front - had made their headquarters. Some regular residents remained, admittedly, so a certain level of discretion was still required, although the power of the state was long gone from this neighborhood, even before the insurgents had moved in. It had been a good night, on the whole, though Selo privately held reservations about the enthusiasm with which some of his brethren had gone to martyrdom. Each of us has our part to play in bringing about the divine plan they had been assured and those who fall shall be most beloved of all, for they are the chosen of the gods.

An old school friend of his had been martyred breaking through the gates of the gaol, and when Selo had talked to him a couple of hours earlier, from the smell of the man's breath he certainly was prepossessed with spirits, if not particularly holy ones. His boss, Pregis, had come back on a stretcher and seemed to be in a bad way, yet still talked excitedly about his exploits in his more lucid moments. Even the elderly prisoner he'd brought back with him had seemed captivated by the enterprise, though he had been whisked away rapidly upon their return.

Returning to his quarters - a single room with a broken cabinet containing all of his earthly goods, a soiled mattress and very little else - Selo fell deeply asleep, lacking the energy even to leaf through one of the tattered magazines stacked by his bedside.

Around midday, by his watch, a fighter he didn't recognize woke him with some urgency, pressing written orders to report his department chief - the diminutive Sol Kotane - for a special assignment - into Selo's hands. A couple of minutes later, a still-sleepy Selo found himself ushered in front of the logistics head in the sweaty garages down the the bowel of the complex.

"Selo, my boy" Sol grinned widely, gesticulating happily with an oily spanner "A glorious day, is it not? No need to answer, the question is rhetorical! Of course! Now, how are you holding up? Can you drive again?"

"I am well, thank you sir" Selo responded, barely stifling a yawn "And I am always available for the cause, sir, you know that"

"And that is why I love you like the son I never had!" Sol grinned even wider, giving Selo a hearty thump on the back before pulling him aside towards an immaculate black hearse parked in one corner of the garage. Selo knew the vehicle well; as the authorities would seldom trouble a hearse, and even if the did, would never search inside the coffin in the back, it was used to ferry high-value assets "Look, I cannot say too much, because this is sensitive information, but the hearse is loaded up with a special cargo. You must ensure that this cargo reaches its destination - and to help you in this you will, for once, be carrying an actual body along for the ride. I know it sounds drastic, but in life he served the cause, and now in death he shall do so again! Get this to Freddie Xuma down at the hotel by the airport, go round to the goods entrance, he'll be expecting you. All clear?"

"Mostly sir" Selo nodded solemnly "But... what am I carrying? Will this blow me up if i am not so careful with it?"

"Ah, my boy!" Sol tapped his nose with a finger conspiratorially "Is secret, you understand! Look, you are a trustworthy lad... so just know that we could be onto a major coup if this gets done right... acting on the best an most secret intelligence sources, of course, eh"

Within the hour, Freddie Xuma's section had unloaded the hearse, unceremoniously tossing the corpse aside to recover what looked like a long, thin rocket launcher and a sack of ammunition, which the men were quietly ordered to take up to the roof; being black porters, little attention was paid to them by the hotel guests, Freddie explained, no more than he would to rats scurrying by his feet. He departed with a smile, urging Selo not to got to bed too early, or else miss the 'show', whatever that meant.

Premier Lindsay Stewart; Peakhurst Lodge, Belmont, Kaedwen

After a sleepless night at the Lodge, Lindsay was all but ready to go back to bed by mid-morning, and decided to catch a couple of hours while she could soon after putting her signature to Koos' draft response to the Valokchian communique which had just come in.

A little more information had come through by this point, as local security forces were still very much on edge and aware that their positions remained tenuous until reinforcements arrived. An airborne company from Cue had been called on, along with an infantry battalion from Sumpter, although her Interior Minister, the ruddy-faced Isaac Ranford, was anxious to keep the operation primarily in police hands, so the police headquarters in nearby Darlot had been put in temporary operational control while the Major Incidents Unit - the police force's national reserve unit - was deployed to the scene.

Outside of Cadell, the night's excitement gave way to a more somber atmosphere in the cold morning light, as the dead were identified and the damage appraised. In several of the morning papers was a grainy picture of three men in balaclavas and dark clothing leaping from the back of a pickup truck to cut down the mayor of Byways, a mining town in northern Mallee, with machetes. A group had also been spotted attempting to plant what was guessed to be a roadside bomb outside Cue garrison, only for the device to explode and kill them when a startled would-be-insurgent dropped it after being challenged. This latter incident had particularly riled up her military men, as, they explained, it was unthinkably brazen for an assailant to approach so close to a military installation.

Fortunately, however, Belmont had stayed quiet all night, although there people were understandable cautious about venturing out in the morning. Armed police had attended one reported incident of shots being fired in the city centre, an area usually quite popular with tourists, to general embarrassment and relief when this turned out to, in fact, be a case of a rather elderly car backfiring.

Regarding the Kaedweni State of Emergency; A Response to Valokchia

Dear Speaker Millinyte,

Thank you for your message of concern, madam; we shall be open to full coordination with regards to safeguarding Valokchian citizens in Kaedwen, and shall make a liaison officer available through your embassy here, should this be required. Regarding the border zone, should the troubles spread to this point it may become necessary for local security forces on both sides of the border to cooperate to some extent in order to ensure mutual security is maintained; would your government be open to discussing such an arrangement?

Yours,

Lindsay Stewart,
Premier of the Republic of Kaedwen

Major Keith Saunders; Stirling Barracks, Cue, Kaedwen

The whine of aero-engines rose to a crescendo as the heavily-laden H-7 Serval lifted off into the hot midday air and turned off to the south and the alluring blue waters of the St Anselm Strait. These aircraft carried 'A' Squadron of the Republic of Kaedwen Army's Long Range Reconnaissance Group, swiftly mustered that morning to address the still-fluid state of affairs in Cadell; acting on incomplete information, facing an uncertain foe and operating in a complex and heavily populated environment. Keith took a pinch of dip. Well, he thought to himself, you did join up for a challenge, didn't you?

Early that morning, an army aviation F-17 Shikra had taken a set of aerial reconnaissance pictures, and at least some of the local police force had apparently come back in contact after the previous night's events, but the intelligence picture on the ground was still sketchy. Rumor on base held that some ethnic terror group or another was out to capture a local white leader to sacrifice to their tribal god. Another held that the people responsible were too stupid - or possibly too drunk - to realize that the world extended beyond their little township, and thought that by shooting up the local police chief they would be free put themselves in power.

Whatever the future held, Keith hoped they would be ready.

Kaedwen Climactic Overview

In terms of climate and landscape, Kaedwen is most famous for what is known colloquially as 'the bush' - areas of arid, rolling grassland and low scrub, although the term is often used to refer to any rural or undeveloped region of Kaedwen, including landscapes more rightly discribed as savanna - though in reality the Kaedweni climate is rather more diverse than this would suggest. In the far south, the Mallee and Yarra districts are rather more tropical in character, particularly along the south coast, while in the far north the valley of the river Tab on the Valokchean boarder is far more temperate. Wollengong and Ekka, on the south side of the Saint Anselm Strait - the seaway which divides the nation of Kaedwen in half - are prime bush country, which on the other side of the strait Midvaal and Gourdoever are more savanna-esque, but nevertheless the countryside in these places is still referred to as 'bushland'  (or 'bushveld').

Kaedwen's population is largely concentrated along the coastlines, where most of the large cities are to be found - although a 'large' city in Kaedwen is many times smaller than the larger of Mundus' mega-cities (the capital of neighboring Valokchia, for example, is home to almost as many people as Kaedwen entirely!) - leaving the interior largely inhabited by rural communities, both settled and nomadic in nature, with large parts set aside as national parks for wildlife preservation.

Selo Sellebi; Cadell Gaol, Cadell, Kaedwen

The old gaol wall loomed ahead in the darkness as their little convoy crept into position through the empty streets. Even this late at night it was still stiflingly hot, and the men in the back of the unmarked van cursed the still wind and oppressive atmosphere. In the cab, Selo was driving whilst their unit commander, Pregis Cotene, sat in the passenger seat nervously checking his watch, the soft orange light casting a web of shadows across his scarred old face. As they approached the last junction before the prison gate, Pregis raised a hand and pointed to an alleyway off to their left, between a betting shop and a used car dealership.

"In here, brother" He whispered, casting a look theatrically behind them "You have done well, we are here early"

"Yes sir, thank you sir" Selo smiled, breaking gently and wheeling them around into the alleyway in a smooth motion, leaving enough room for the two vans following to disappear into the darkness also.

"Alright, men" Pregis breathed, as the engine noise died away "Prepare yourselves; stick with your brothers, and we shall strike a mighty blow against the old enemy this night. History shall be made, be sure of it" The response from the back of the van was a little muted, but the commander seemed pleased with himself, and quickly pulled on a balaclava. A few tense minutes went by before the screech of tires and the roar of an engine was heard from behind them, back in the direction of the main road. Bright lights flashed past the entrance to their alleyway, the engine's whine rising to a crescendo in the night. The blast hit them seconds later, rocking their vehicle even though they were well out of sight of the point of impact.

Pregis rocked for a second, before regaining his composure, raising aloft his Uzi sub machine gun and raising a throaty cry "To arms brothers! The hour of reckoning is neigh!" This begat a rather better response from the men in the back, and the van doors were quickly thrown open as the crackle-and-pop of gunfire began to be heard from the direction of the Gaol.

After some minutes of intermittent firing, dying down one moment only to begin again with a vengeance the next, Selo crept out from his cab to join the other two drivers, who were trying to catch a glimpse of the action from a hiding spot behind a rather sorry-looking hatchback on the dealership's forecourt. The prison gatehouse and part of the curtain wall, of drab late nineteenth century brick construction, had been torn apart by the detonation of a huge truck bomb, the remains of which were still smoldering in the gateway. The lights in the prison blocks were already starting to go out, as power to the site was cut, and the smell of cordite drifted towards them across the junction.

One of the other drivers, who was listening intently to a portable radio through an earpiece, spoke up after a couple more minutes transfixed by the distant echoes of battle "Our brothers have taken the KBC transmitter!" He exclaimed, in an excited hush "Soon the whole world shall know of our struggle!"

"Not a moment too soon" Responded the other other driver "I see movement by the gatehouse. Is that the Chief?"

"I can't tell" The first replied, squinting towards the two figures silhouetted against the burning wreckage in the gatehouse "Selo, the Chief is your charge, go and check"

"On it, brother" Selo grimaced, drawing his .38 caliber revolver from within his black overalls and stepping out a few paces into the street before shouting the agreed challenge "Are you looking for a taxi, friend?"

"Yes, my grandfather is drunk, could you please take him home" Came the reply from one of the figures. Now they were closer, Selo could see that the speaker - a masked fighter with a rifle on his shoulder - was supporting the other man, an older man with an unkempt grey beard and ill-fitting clothes. This was exactly what Selo wanted to hear and, quickly re-holstering his gun, took the older man from the fighter. His new charge was surprisingly light, which was fortunate since his legs seemed totally incapable of supporting him. The man also seemed to be mildly incoherent, and kept babbling about something or other a Selo coaxed him into the van. Then they were off, through the streets of a city in chaos.

Police Captain Wilhelm de Kock; Yarra District Police Headquarters, Cadell, Kaedwen

Wilhelm was awakened in the middle of the night by the echo of a distant blast, before the wail of an alarm brought him fully back into the world. Along with most of the rest of his unit, he'd taken to sleeping in the billets around the back of the police headquarters - a comparatively new building complex on the outskirts of town - since they'd been placed on alert a week earlier. Still groggy, he quickly dressed and made his way down towards the operations room, which was a veritable hive of activity. A fat police Major was attempting to coral the burgeoning crowd back out into the corridors when the building was shaken with a dull thump, and the hum of background conversation dried up hurriedly. Another thump followed shortly thereafter, with a third impact smashing the windows on one end of the command centre and filling the air with dust and smoke. A strong smell of burning permeated the room.

"Mortar!" Someone called out from outside "Take cover! Take cover!"

"De Kock!" The fat major spotted Wilhelm as the assembled company dived for cover "This must be the moment you've been fucking waiting for! Get your blokes and deal with these bastards!"

"Right away, sir" Wilhelm replied, with a grimace "Bute we have to fi-"

"Just get ready to fight!" The fat Major cut him off "Let me worry about the fucking niceties!"

Without another word, Wilhelm turned on his heel and scurried away. He knew where he'd find his people - from the Yarra Special Policing Section - a short distance away outside the armory. His Sergeant, the elaborately mustachioed Alan Hofmeyer, had already started drawing weapons and ammunition, including equipment for Wilhelm. They had twelve men present in total, including, if Wilhelm was totally honest with himself, some right bastards. Even so, most of them were visibly shaken by the rude awakening.

"One for you, boss" Alan addressed Wilhelm casually, handing over a rifle and a couple of full magazines "Why can't the bloody ethnics wait 'til I've had my morning coffee, eh? Fucking barbarians" He chuckled quietly, before continuing "So, what's the plan boss man?"

"We're waiting for the watchmen to get their shit together and spot the shooters" Wilhelm explained, slinging the rifle and pouching the magazines "Then we'll snatch the fucks" Another mortar shell landed nearby, and with a violent pop, the lights went out"

"What the fuck...?" Someone exclaimed, in the darkness, before the corridor was bathed in the baleful orange glow of emergency lighting.

At this point, the fat major from the command centre re-appeared, rather red in the face and short of breath, brandishing his revolver with alarming gusto.

"De Kock, with me" He panted "Bring your lads... We've got armed ethnics on the perimeter... Gatehouse is screaming for backup..."

"Charlie's in the fucking wire, eh boss?" Alan observed, with a smirk.

"Right behind you, sir" Wilhelm nodded to the major, ignoring his sergeant "Come on lads, there's something afoot. Stay watchful"

Out of the operation centre through the main foyer, they headed towards the gatehouse through the now quite dark vehicle park. Mortar rounds had stopped falling for the time being, and the night was eerily quiet. The shouts of the men on the gate could be heard, even at a fair distance. Suddenly, there was a hiss and a flash, and the gatehouse - a small tin building serving as little more than a shelter for the sentries - was illuminated in a blinding explosion. This seemed to be a signal for the attackers, as the building was targeted with brisk small-arms fire and quickly riddled with bullet holes. There was nothing further heard from the police sentries.

"Fuck..." The major breathed, his formerly flushed face now looking rather pale in the moonlight.

"Alan" Wilhelm hissed, pulling the Sergeant close "Take five blokes and drag sir back to the operations centre, take up firing positions. I'll join you with the rest when I can"

"Sir" Alan nodded, his formerly jovial demeanor now forgotten "Toit, Eyers, Grey, Streek, Woods. With me. We're getting you out of harm's way, sir. Double up, lads!"

The remaining special policemen fanned out and sought cover in the darkness. Sporadic fire continued to come over their heads, and shouts could be heard to their front as the attackers advanced. Shadowy figures flitted from cover to cover, scarcely visible in the darkness. Wilhelm sensed one of these approaching in front of him, and shouted a challenge.

"Halt! Police! Do not move!"

This didn't seem to be taken so well, as it was met with a burst of poorly-aimed automatic fire and a shouted curse. Seeing the firer illuminated briefly by his muzzle flashes, Wilhelm took aim and fired back at a range of maybe twenty-five meters, seeming to strike the attacker in the chest, but he couldn't be sure, so fired again, while all hell was breaking out around him. More fire was coming in from the front, and more shadowy figures were bounding towards their thin khaki line, who, for their part had begun firing back with some urgency. Losing sight of the men around him, Wilhelm emptied his first magazine in what felt like seconds, his world shrinking to encompass little more than the elusive targets presenting themselves through his rifle sights.

Off to his left, someone was shouting for help in Afrikaans, though he couldn't tell who's voice it was. The blast of a grenade barely registered, as if in a dream, although suddenly Wilhelm felt very warm down his right side and had to fight hard against the urge for sleep. Soon, his second magazine was empty too, and he called out for the man to his right to cover him while he reloaded. Crouching down behind a police patrol car, a sudden stinging sensation in his left hand made him drop his magazine. Cursing, he reached down for it, but couldn't seem to find it. He was sweating profusely, even in the comparative cool of the night, and reached up to wipe the beads from his forehead, only to find this got a warm, salty, almost metallic-tasting liquid in his mouth and eyes. He looked at the bloody remains of his hand without comprehension for a while, as chaos raged around him, before making a belated attempt to dress the wound.

Very tired, he curled up and faded into blackness where he fell.

Premier Lindsay Stewart; Peakhurst Lodge, Belmont, Kaedwen

The little office in Peakhurst Lodge - the Kaedweni Premier's official residence in the hills overlooking central Belmont - was abuzz, crammed to the rafters as it was with civil servants, senior policemen and government ministers. Lindsay, roused from her slumber in the middle of the night and feeling a little under dressed in her dressing gown and slippers, sat aghast at her desk as reports from the fighting began to pile up in front of her. Police installations had borne the brunt of the violence, with unidentified gunmen attacking a dozen police stations and prisons on both sides of the St Anselm Straits, though reports of shootings of local officials, judges, politicians and even priests were beginning to filter through.

The worst hit, however, seemed to be the city of Cadell, at the mouth of the river Yarra, where contact with the local police headquarters had been lost entirely, and video of prisoners from the local gaol - still clad in their orange prison overalls - roaming the streets was already beginning to circulate on the internet. On the advice of her defence minister, Tristan Sharp, the local Commando had been activated and were in the process of mustering, though Lindsay privately had reservations about their suitability for the task of combating an unknown insurgency in what was still a very fluid situation.

All but helpless to influence events directly, at the behest of her Foreign Minister, the boyish Koos Bierman, they put together a public statement for the morning press release.

Republic of Kaedwen Diplomatic Communique

Regarding the Kaedweni State of Emergency

To the People of Kaedwen, and Mundus at large,

In the early hours of this morning, the Republic of Kaedwen was the target of an unprecedented act of coordinated and premeditated violence. While our brave and selfless security services are working hard to keep the public safe and bring the scions of terror to justice, we urge the public in the threatened regions to stay indoors and await the all-clear announcement from the relevant local authorities. With regards to foreign nationals in the country, while we are working with foreign embassies to keep you safe, please understand that, in the interests of national security, the borders have been closed until further notice.

The world may stand assured that those responsible for this affront to all civilized peoples shall be brought to justice, and we ask our international partners to assist us in this endeavor should the possibility for such action come about. Furthermore, please rest assured that we are doing everything in our power to keep your nationals in our country - our guests - safe from harm, and shall work through your embassies in order to trace any individuals who may have become entangled in the violence.

A state of emergency is now in effect.

Yours,

Lindsay Stewart,
Premier of the Republic of Kaedwen

Republic of Kaedwen Armed Forces

"We’re on a route uncharted, fire and blood erase our tracks.
On we fly,on wings of thunder, never more to sheath our swords.
All of us in battle fallen, not to be brought back by words" - Pavel Antokolsky

The Republic of Kaedwen's armed forces are the men and women tasked with the defense of the republic against her external foes. The ROKAF consists of three branches; the Republic of Kaedwen Army (ROKA), the Republic of Kaedwen Navy (ROKN) and the Republic of Kaedwen Air Defence Forces (ROKADF) - the ROKAF does not possess an independent air force organisation, with aircraft instead being operated by the other services as required. Note that this document pertains largely to the status of the ROKAF prior to the beginning of the 2018 troubles in Kaedwen, though mention of the fate of formations, bases and individuals shall be made where possible.

Republic of Kaedwen Army

The Republic of Kaedwen Army (ROKA) is the largest of the three services, and the most bloodied, if neither the oldest nor most prestigious. The ROKA has previously borne the brunt of the fighting in Kaedwen's Bush Wars, and is largely set up for low-intensity counter-insurgency style operations; though the ROKA cannot claim to possess particularly modern heavy equipment, tough Kaedweni bushmen make for some excellent light infantrymen, particularly when fighting among their native landscape.

The ROKA's reservists are also worthy of note - the famed Commando Establishment - combining the ruthlessness of a militia organisation with much of the organisation and equipment support which comes with being a part of an official arm of the government. Having cut their teeth in imperial-era conflicts, and subsequently been heavily involved in the bush wars, the Commandos are a product of the fierce independence and regional spirits of rural Kaedwen.

Republic of Kaedwen Navy

The senior service, the ROKN languished somewhat since its heyday, with the ROKA fulfilling the greatest part of the Kaedweni government's defense needs - and hence taking the greatest part of the budgetary cake. The ROKN, therefore, consists of a mix of antiquated surface combatants, a more modern submarine force and supporting marine infantry and naval aviation units.

In addition to the above units, the ROKN maintains control of the Marine Infantry Brigade (which, with its three Marine Infantry Battalions, is far weaker than a regular ROKA Brigade), two squadrons of F-17 Sea Shikra fighter-bombers for anti-shipping duties, two squadrons of H-6 Sea Eyra utility helicopters for rotational ship- and land-based duties and three anti-ship missile batteries equipped with MAS-77 Theseus anti-ship missile launchers.

Republic of Kaedwen Air Defence Forces

The ROKADF provide high-level air cover and undertake airspace policing duties, and as such may see themselves deployed in support of either the ROKA or ROKN, though will only operate independently in order to defend against a strategic air offensive - a threat which, fortunately for all involved, has not to date been employed against Kaedwen. To achieve this, the ROKADF primarily deploy interceptor squadrons - equipped with the F-19 Raecc fighter - and heavy surface-to-air missile batteries equipped with the MSA-78 Perseus missile system. Additionally, the ROKADF maintains its own supporting arms, including civil and mechanical engineering teams, the airfields protection ROKADF Regiment, air traffic controllers and signalers.

12 squadrons of F-19 Raecc interceptors are flown by the ROKADF, with another 15 air-defence batteries currently operated. The ROKADF Regiment, in a similar arrangement to the marine infantry, has a unique organisation, being a single battalion with six largely independent companies and no heavy supporting arms.

Kaedwen 2018: A Time of Death

"Our people sought refuge behind great barriers of steel and concrete, these walls which we have built for ourselves. Little did we know of the terms of imprisonment that we had dictated for ourselves..." - Maj. Keith Saunders, at the siege of Cadell

Subject to Alteration in Line with The Kaedwen Emergency

Kaedwen was always a land of contrasts - from the azure waters and gentle surf of Peniche Bay to the ochre clay of the outback, and the glistening towers of Belmont to the dusty outstations along the Pondhok - and her people have, in recent times, adopted a horrific aspect of this. The peoples of this nation find themselves divided starkly upon lines of ethnicity, decades of inter-communal friction coming to a head as the facade of civility slips away amidst a torrent of violence.

The diversity of the peoples of Kaedwen have, in times now forgotten, previously garnered the moniker of a 'rainbow nation' - but now the rainbow's colours have been washed away, as so much detritus before an autumn flood, and in their place, both figuratively and literally, stands a world cast in the sharp relief of black against white.

Stopping just short of outright anarchy, much of the country nonetheless lies far beyond the reach of the national government in Belmont and their much depleted and far overstretched security forces. Nativist warbands and ethnonationalist commandos hold sway over large swaths of the Kaedweni back country, with its impoverished townships, agricultural outstations and isolated villages. Between some, an uneasy peace exists, while other backwater towns are shaken by gunfire on a nightly basis.

While remaining under a greater degree of central control than the outlands, Kaedwen's handful of big cities have nevertheless been shaken almost to their very foundations. In the face of real or imagined inter-communal violence, metropolitan authorities across the country have endorsed the erection of so-called 'peace walls' - dividing communities upon the basis of race. In many of these newly-created ghettos, the rule of law does not extend far, and the people clamour for others to fill the gap, a process which has resulted variously in the wild proliferation of urban gangs, private militias and 'special police' units.

Only in Belmont does a degree of normality persist. As a new, planned and affluent metropolis, Belmont lacks many of the ethnic fault lines present in other quarters of Kaedweni society, and the populace of the capital have maintained a greater degree of social cohesion than elsewhere. Perhaps more importantly, loyal elements of the Republic of Kaedwen Army - ROKA - rallied quickly around the capital, stamping out armed pretenders with a grim determination.

This is the reality of Kaedwen in 2018; a country riven by internal strife, a government locked in a death struggle with enemies within and without, and amongst it all many millions of personal dramas unfold...

General Geography of Numenora

The lands of the Numenorans lie in central Albion, and are characterised by a temperate climate, thickly wooded river valleys and rugged highlands. At their core, these territories are founded around the great twin river systems of the Nistra and the Drava. To their confluence at Nastrog, the Drava flows from the north, towards Wegry and Swajkia, while the Nistra flows from the south, winding through southern Livno and Maribor. From days of old, these major rivers have formed the arteries of Numenoran civilisation, carrying people and trade across the vast, and often wildly inhospitable, landscape.

To an extent, the physical geography of the region can be said to have fostered the independent spirits of the Numenoran states; from low-lying Bremmervoord to the mountains of Maribor, and from the plains of Nistria to the primordial forests of Wegry, the lands here vary as much as their peoples.

Free Peoples of Numenora

"Suum cuique"

Background

While often referred to collectively, the 'Free Peoples' inhabit thirteen independent states of various sizes, bound by common history and the blood of the people of Numenor. The Numenoran states are fiercely independent, each with their own government, nobility and traditions; spasmodic conflicts known as 'Kabinettskriegen' have been fought between the states for much of their recent history. While local loyalties may run deep in Numenoran society, the region plays host to an increasing number of developed urban centres of a character entirely their own. Climactic conditions are generally considered temperate, though bitter winters are far from unknown, especially up in the hills and mountains that criss-cross Numenora.

Hey again folks,

For those of you who don't recognise the username, I'm Dijel; many moons ago, I used to be a TIO member, but may have slightly jacked it in. Now, seeing as y'all got yourselves a brand new shiny forum, and that part of me has been missing this, I'm gonna make my (second, by my count) reappearance here, with an all-new and slightly rehashed nation. Might be a bit of a slow restart for me, but I'll try not to bite off more than I can chew this time :P
