SUN Side Chat - Drenovia and Chistopol
« on: January 11, 2021, 05:39:15 PM »
The talks were over and the treaty had been signed. King Đurađ had however noticed an extra opportunity and now fully wanted to see where it would go. He sent his other delegates from the various Orders that made Drenovia there homes to engage the Chistopolian delegates in conversation except for their Crown Prince Kārlis. During the talks it had been clear that the heir to the Chistopol throne didn't exactly seem to share the First Ministers view of the world. While it was still a relatively unknown situation in Chistopol to Đurađ the fact a fellow Royal seemed to be lacking influence could be something to take advantage of. The King held his wife Jožica's hand as they approached the Crown Prince. "Your Highness"  Đurađ extended a hand, "May I introduce my wife Queen Jožica"

Still attired in the uniform of her own Order the Queen gently shook the Crown Prince's hand. "A pleasure to meet" she greeted him with a kind of expressionless face.

"I couldn't help notice that your First Minister didn't seem to support your position that strongly. I was hoping royal to royal that we may be in a position to perhaps help each other out. If our nations are to be friends then I would prefer to work with other royals and we could be in a position to help your family gain some influence back. We're a nation ourselves with a strong royal tradition. An expanding royal family and we want to escape our isolationism. Today has been the first step in that but we want more. Perhaps we can discuss you and your fathers situation back home?"

Crown Prince Kārlis had no desire to mingle with the other Chistopolians following the ending of the talks. He found himself a quiet spot and sat down to survey the event unfolding before him. He was thankful though that King Đurađ and Queen Jožica had come over. He had been impressed by the Drenovian King in the meeting and was pleased to make his acquintance.

"Our nation is sadly going through some moves that are anti-monarchist. It is sad that there is a growing group that wish to totally remove the monarchies power yet we have already given up so much. My father very literally gave his blood to free the nation from Communsim. He willingly gave the people more power but that was never enough for them. Now our family are merely the rubber stampers of our nations laws. At worst all we can do is refuse to sign things and make the people have to do a referendum. Its a pale reflection on what our role was and I fear its making our nation soft as it takes too long for anything to happen. As for my fathers situation I am not entirely sure what you want to know?"

Đurađ shook his head a little as the CrownPrince spoke. "It is a great disrespect to see a man such as your father who fought to free his people now have to ride as a passenger in shaping your nations future. It is a sad thing to see." Đurađ was a member of the Drenovian Order, a religious group that had served the nations military for hundreds of years and he was rightly proud of the way that it had defended the Union against foreign crusades and interlopers. "What I meant by discussing his situation is ensuring that he is rightly and justifiably honoured and respected the way a monarch should be. Your nation is rebuilding and reforming to become in my view weaker. This First Minister of yours seems someone who panders to the mob. I think he will not give your father the respect he deserves. I wonder if perhaps you could make it possible for me to visit your nation and meet directly with your father. Monarch to monarch and soldier to soldier. I have a few things I would like to present to him. It would be a chance for him to be publically recognised and for us to show our new friendship is possible mainly because of the royal families rather than the politicians. Do you think this will be possible. If not I would be deeply honoured if he visited the Union."

"I believe Your Majesty that while my father would welcome such a visit it would be impossible to undertake without there being some involvement from the First Minister. We have a significant Royalist sentiment in the older generations but the youth of the nation I think are sadly adopting a view of the world that tries to impose fairness where we already had it. The Communists who came spoke of giving power to the people, seizing control on behalf of the worker and yet it was the workers who suffered. We went from being a nation capable of competing economically with most nations across the globe to one who struggles to renovate a capital in dire need of a face-lift and infrastructure boost all because of that idea. Under the monarchs of Chistopol our people had flourished but now we struggle to even get libraries built without the help of religious groups like the Bene Gesserit. We have two minor political parties who are pushing for restoration of power to the monarchy however they only have about 15% of the seats in our government meaning they have very little in the way of a voice. Now in terms of your visit if you do not mind also visiting the First Minister then I will be happy to see you in Tartu, if you'd rather avoid the creature then I am certain my father would be thrilled to visit."

OOC- Shall we just jump to either your King heading to Chistopol or if you'd prefer not to see the First Minister us coming to you?

OOC- We'll come to you. I'll assume this is pre us going to Parbhani

Two weeks had passed since the meeting in Cassiopeia and King Đurađ IV had his team make several contacts with the Chistopolian royals household to ensure everything was arranged for their meeting. He was determined to make the occasion one that was about two King's meeting for the first time in their nations histories rather than a state visit to another nations government. As such Đurađ had gathered together an impressive entourage for his first trip to Chistopol. Alongside himself was first wife Queen Terezija and his second wife Jožica. The two Queen's summed up the Drenovia that Đurađ was trying to embrace, his elder wife was attired in a smart business suit black with a white blouse. His younger wife though was devoted to her religious order, The Order of Krešimira which was the only all female Order within the nation. As a Order based on being guardians of the woods and Huntresses so Jozica was attired in their traditional green hide and wool dress. They had brought with them the head of the largest of the Religious Orders too, Commander of the Household for the Drenovian Order, a man that in one regard even outranked the King but seeing as Đurađ was a descendent of a demi-God that really didn't factor in.

The four of them had flown in to arrive early in the morning and it was Jožica who would lead the way off of the aircraft her green hood pulled up over her blonde hair. It was tradition that in any procession representatives of the Order of Krešimira would go first as it represented their leading of traditional Hunts. As she set foot on Chistopolian soil she stopped and pulled her hood down. On a gold chain a horn was strung over her left shoulder she took it now and moistening her lips before blowing it in one long clear note as her husband and the others headed down the aircraft steps. Jožica spoke loudly as her husband took his first step on Chistopolian land. "Druantia, God of the Forest your blood, His Majesty King Đurađ, Grand Master of the Drenovian's, Duke of Dabašnica has arrived in a land far from home. Please watch over him and protect him as he walks in new Forests with new friends." The King kissed his wife on the cheek as he passed and headed towards the welcoming committee.

Armed with his walking stick King Kārlis IV waited leaning on the polished wooden pole. His son and name sake Prince Kārlis has returned with a glowing report of this foreign monarch and the respect he had given the families position and while the senior Kārlis perhaps didn't share his son's dream of an all powerful monarchy. He had seen how despite the Communists painting themselves as a giving power to the people they had infact done the opposite and made the Chistopolians less powerful over their own lives. He wanted to walk a middle path were the crown and the Chamber of the People walked side by side in step whenever possible. He did though think the man stood to his left, First Minister Darijus Laine had taken the nation too far away from this and had taken many opportunities to weaken the royal family and leave them as nothing but puppets. Today though he suspected that would be harder to do if his son's words about King Đurađ were to be believed.

The King was pleased when the Drenovian delegation landed as it meant soon he would be able to be seated in the waiting car. He had refused the airport's liason ladies kind offer of a seat as to use it would have shown in his mind a weakness and so instead he endured the aches of his 89 year old body. He had to admit the sight of Jožica amused him, a beautiful young woman dressed like she had stepped forward from the middle ages. He understood a little of the Drenovian faith and culture and was genuinely looking forward to hearing more despite him feeling some of it, especially polygamy was a little outdated. Only one religious sect in his nation believed it was permissible and the law only recognised officially only a marriage between a man and woman. The introduction of her husband was rather dramatic but the King did his best not to react with anything other than a dignified silence. As soon as Durad set foot on the tarmac a military band played the guests national anthem and King Kārlis moved forward. "King Durad welcome to Chistopol" King Kārlis switched the walking stick to his left hand and extended his right to greet the younger monarch. "My son returned from Cassiopeia promoting a visit and friendship with Drenovia very enthusiastically. I look forward to showing you our land and then at some point in the future perhaps visiting your own nation. You already known my son Crown Prince Kārlis and I think you also know our First Minister." He waited for the group to be introduced to each other before leading the King along a prepared red carpet that lead towards the waiting vehicle. Lining one side of the red carpet in a perfect line were the members of the Kings' Royal Ranger Regiment, a unit he had himself founded during the guerrilla campaign to rid his land of the Communists. While tradition dictated the Royal Guards Regiment should undertake duties such as this the King still preferred to use his Rangers despite them today being nothing more than a regular infantry unit. The King knew a few of the officers from his regular visits and stopped and chatted to a few almost forgetting he had a foreign monarch to escort to a car.

The First Minister found himself walking alongside the youngest Queen and was curious, "If I may ask your Highness, what is the symbolism behind your attire and your horn. Its a rather interesting thing for us to see here." He hoped he hadn't offended although frankly even if he had it was little concern. The visit to him was an inconvenience and he'd tried to stop it. He could be better off at the moment sitting down and coming up with ways to help the capital flourish again rather than a goodwill tour by a foreign monarch. Perhaps though there may be ways to turn this visit to his advantage but that was yet to be seen.

King Đurađ gave the briefest of handshakes to the First Minister but exchanged a warm and friendly one with Kārlis and his son before accompanying him down the line of his soldiers. As the King stopped and spoke the the soldiers Đurađ didn't mind his arrival being delayed at all for this and infact indulged in speaking to a few of the soldiers himself. Each time his host stopped and spoke to someone Đurađ did the same to the soldier stood next to that man and as Karlis moved on he thanked the soldier for his time and shook the mans hand ensuring he was seen to have shaken hands for longer than with the First Minister.

Behind him he heard the First Minister try and strike up a conversation with his wife Queen Jožica who carried herself with a rather elongated posture. She was already reasonably tall but the elegant way she carried herself, shoulders back and spine ramrod straight with her chin slightly tipped upwards. Her face was often emotionless and as the First Minister addressed her it remained so.  She took a breath before answering "It is our belief that the Forest is the true form of Mundus and that one day all the planet must return to that. My religious order act as the guardians of the forest, we hunt the things that would do us harm and we do so in ways that cause no harm. That is why we wear this" Her last sentence was almost taking the tone of him having asked a stupid question.

Ahead the two Kings and the eldest Queen were engaged in finishing the meeting of the local soldiers. "So Your Majesty I hope we have a chance to see some of your nation" he was careful enough to ensure the "Your" was said loud enough to have the First Minister hear.

"We have brunch arranged at the Palace." Kārlis IV confirmed to Đurađ. "Its a rather humble home compared to some of the major palaces in Mundus, the palaces at Northfort would consider this a lodge I think but we like it." Following the victory over the communists many of the great buildings of state had either been destroyed or Kārlis had handed them piece by piece over to the state. The awaiting cars took the royals out from the national airport towards the countryside. The Royal Palace sat out on the countryside that surrounded Tartu, it had been that way as the royals had pulled back from day to day involvement in the countryside and now the family enjoyed some of the more lesuirely past-times of the countryside while using their estate to largely become financially independent. As they approached the Palace they headed through farms that were growing rape seed ready to be turned into biofuel, further up the hill were vineyards growing grapes for the families wine and in the woods close to the Palace wild game was being encouraged to provide meat for the events at the Palace but also to help support the luxury food company the family had established. The Palace from the outside looked like it needed some sprucing up with some of the paint on the wood needing a touch up. Kārlis liked the place though and he hoped his guests did too. With it now being a rather decent spring morning the King had arranged for brunch, a light meal of various small dishes of potato cakes, cheeses and cured meats to be served on one of the towers that overlooked the farmland below them.

The King had invited the others from the royal family, Crown Prince Kārlis, his sons Prince Oļegs and Prince Motiejus and his grand=daughter Lady Viktoras. They made up the senior royals with Lady Vikoras infact being the equivalent of the Royal Matron, a position similar to that of a Queen in terms of being the most senior female royal. The group settled down now the First Minister had left them to their royal visit and the cionverseration could begin in ernest. "Now my son says you had some ideas for our two crowns becoming firm friends. Would you care to share those with us?"

The fact that the Chistopol royals home was tucked out of the way was a further insult to the royal heritage and standing. Đurađ felt sorry for the family, they had lead their nation to freedom and shed their blood in doing so and yet now this Laine guy was making them look weaklings. Some of the Palace needed obvious care which lead him to the conclusion that they either had little money, little say over the place or a combination of the two. He did though like the idea of the land being worked and the closeness of the woods. That appealed to his youngest wife, Jožica, who would disappear for hours at a time into the woodland, often reammerging with a basket of wild food that she would prepare herself in their own Palace kitchens. Now before beginning to eat the Queen said some short prayers while holding her husbands hand.

"I believe that the human world needs to take a leaf from nature. In nature things work so well. Take for example the Bee, the most magnificent creature on Mundus. It arranges itself into social groups, each person knowing their place and their role. It has a Queen guiding its every move and ensuring everyone has what they need. There is no time in the swarm for discussion, for debate, for questions, there is only time for action and through action they find success. Look what happens when we permit these institutions to fall. If we remove the Queen the hive becomes disjointed, chaotic and for three days it stands on a knife edge until, hopefully, a new Queen emerges. Nature needs a strong leader able to take the measures needed to ensure the strength of everyone.  To use Laine is making your hive weak. We need to show that you have the strength and the power to lead Chistopol. To do this we need to tie you to other strong leaders, people like myself, like Aosta, Lijiang, the list of strong monarchies goes on and on. We need to ensure that it is you that makes these connections not Laine. As such I would like to suggest an actual physical tying of our royal families. This will raise your prestige and our people see a strong family come into our hive if you will. There are several options. The first option is that we have my nine year old son Prince Karlo, marry a similar aged member of your family. We also have Prince Hrvoje who is four however we believe that he is perhaps better suited for a life in the service of religion." The King and his Queen shared a glance and for the first time the Queen's icey expression changed to one that looked a little sad, Hrvoje had a deformed spine and was in the view of Đurađ something he and his wife argued about. Đurađ was certain it was a curse because his lust for  Jožica had seen him persuade her to break a marriage contract while  Jožica was more confident that the deformation was there because the boy would become a great royal and show the people that no matter what weakness they are born with they could raise to greatness. It was the one matter of disharmony in their family. "We could also of course look at a marriage between myself and Lady Viktoras. She would become a Queen in her own right rather than a Royal Matron." She was a pretty enough woman and had royal blood making her a useful addition. "I know this may be a surprising first move but I believe if we're doing something we should do something big."

The offer from the Drenovians had taken the family, especially Lady Viktoras. They had not really thought about what the Drenovian King might be here to offer. It was certain that offering himself as a husband to the Royal Matron wasn't on the their cards. King Kārlis looked at his grand-daughter and noticed a rather shocked expression on her face possibly purly because of the brazen and matter of fact way that Đurađ had brought up the subject. For a good time none of the Chistoplians knew what to say until the King broke the silence. "You're offer is a rather surprising one, something that we didn't expect at all. As such we would like a moment to discuss your rather interesting proposal. Please stay here enjoy the view and some refreshments while we discuss the situation."

The five royals made their way into one of the castle's lounges and sat. "I'm not doing it." Viktoras began the conversation even before the family had sat down. "I will not marry into.....his....well....hareem" she was clearly shocked, "Marriage is between one man and one woman" she said fiercely. Her father Prince Olegs placed a reassuring hand on her arm.

"Lets not be too hasty." Prince Kārlis sat expressionless and immediately found several pairs of wide eyes at him. "Please let me explain." He spoke softly with little expression in his voice. " Our nation, even our faith has three branches. One of them  namely the followers of Triglav believe a man can have three wives. Đurađ has two. We could kill two birds with one stone. We can have the Drenovians become family and we can win favour with the  Triglav's. A quarter of our people follow that branch, perhaps at least one of the royal family should. I say we offer  Đurađ a deal that Viktorias will become his wife but he must agree to no more."

"NO" Prince Olegs the middle of the three Princes in terms of age responded. "I will not allow my children to become pawns in some diplomatic game. More importantly I will not ask her to go against her own faith." It was clear the King was on their side and nodded his agreement.

"I have always said that the senior members of the Royal Family will marry Chistopolians, that includes Viktroias, she is the most senior female royal and we will not marry her off to some foreign King against her wishes. Lady Viktorias breathed an audible sigh of relief. "I think the marriage would have been beneficial but I gave my word and I would rather have Viktorias with us here. We'll then apologise that we can not accept."

Prince Kārlis then stood and paced a little, "This is a friendship we must have." He waved a hand to dismiss the families objections. "Father one day I shall be King and you have to allow me to help shape the future I will inherit. We have no real royal friends and Drenovia seem a strong proud nation. You must let me do this." They discussed the idea for a moment or two before returning to the Drenovians where Prince Kārlis was permitted to take the lead. "Your Majesties we are flattered by your offer. I know Lady Viktorias is honoured at your offer." As pre-agreed she nodded with a smile, "However she is the most senior female of our family and we could not see her leaving the nation as she has many duties here. As you described it she is kind of our Queen Bee." Prince Kārlis laughed awkwardly. "We have a compromise to offer. I have several grand-daughters, Princess Ingrid is 12, Princess Jannika is 10 and Princess Jana who is 8. I do not believe fully in the idea of arranged marriages but I do believe that a royal should marry someone who benefits their family and their nation. What I propose is that Prince Karlo be promised to Princess Jannika. They should have an opportunity to get to know each other and over the next eight years or so we should as families guide them towards the path of duty and friendship. Then when Karlo reaches the age of 18 we can leave it to them, they can veto our decsions if you will. While you may have desires for Hrvoje  to nobly enter the Priesthood perhaps as a back up we can have him and Jana undertake the same agreement. Then should for whatever reason he not enter the Priesthood we have a spare or a bonus if need be. Is this acceptable."

Đurađ was disappointed with the answer but not surprised. The counter-offer though was better than nothing. Crown Prince Karlis though was seemingly a lot more willing to invest in this friendship than his father or siblings and so Đurađ was willing to try. "I think these are perfectly fair proposals." He knew from his point of view his two sons ;would do whatever he ordered them to, he was ensuring the Drenovian Order were central to thier upbringing just like his had and that Order put great focus upon loyalty, duty and obedience to the monarchy. If all went according to plan then Karlo would become a leading member of the Drenovian Order, serve in the military and one day follow in his father's footsteps as King. Hrvoje would recieve the same expectations but through the Priesthood, therefore never taking a wife. Karlo meanwhile would take multiple wives so having a weak Chistopolian Princess wouldn't be a problem. In fact if Đurađ's next gambit went to plan then perhaps he could make sure she was a little more of a perfect bride. "I think perhaps therefore we should look at Karlo coming here and spending a month per year at some boarding school. He knew a month would do little to break the work of the Order on his son and even then Chistopolian schools probably were full of weak minded politically correct republicans. And then obviously Jannika would come and spend a month in Drenovia. It would allow them to get to know each other and experience a nation they will once, hopefully, have a royal title from." Đurađ would have his wife enroll the girl on one of the schools run by the Order of Krešimira, the female only Order, it had a track record of creating fiercly loyal followers and Queen Jožica was chief among them.

"Perhaps with marriages on the table we can discuss other matters" Đurađ thought this could be a bit more difficult however he could be when needed blunt and to the point. "I mean this with the utmost respect but your home here is tucked out of the way from your people. It is also slightly run-down. We have in our Orders a variety of skilled craftsman that would love a chance to have a go at a project such as this. In addition I would like to offer help to renovaking your capital. I read that you permitted the Bene Gesserit to convert one of your old buildings into a library. I would like your permission to have a project where the Drenovian Order, and other Orders help renovate buildings in Tartu for public use, each one would be ensured to have some kind of plaque or name reflecting your family. Is this something possible?"

The school exchange was something Karlis would have preferred not to happen. He wanted his family to be seen as enjoying the same education as all other people could in Chistopol. As the Kingdom tried to take its baby steps towards returning to greater international affairs it would require some compromises with how things were handled regarding his family and if they were seriously hoping to make this marriage deal work then this school exchange would be a good step forward. "I think the exchange, regardless of whether it ends in marriage or not having some of our Royal families knowledgeable about another nation is worth having. I think we should perhaps start this the coming summer. I'm sure Prince Karlo would enjoy a Chistopolian summer."

The talks turned slightly more awkward it was clear the Palace had seen better days but Đurađ making it so obvious felt a bit of a slight. It was true that the amount of funds the Royal Family were given for their "Comfort and Status" had been reducing each year and the family were having to dedicate more time to financial and business endeavours than their ceremonial royal roles. Costs had been cut and the upkeep of the ancestral home was among those cuts. It was however true that leaving a family legacy on the transformation of Tartu would require more funds that they could muster and here was someone offering to help. "We would welcome the opportunity to bring investment into the capital's rejuvenation project and as such I think we could find some kind of projects. What would be of interest to these Orders of yours?"

King Karlis was perhaps expecting Đurađ to respond but it was Jožica who answered. "The religious orders believe that preserving the name of the Order throughout history is important. You allowing us to put the name of the various orders on the buildings, even in some small way would be sufficient. I can speak for the Order of Krešimira but we would be willing to utilise our craftsman and our funds. For example we would be delighted to construct some places for recreation within the city, like parklands and gardens."

Đurađ smiled, "I can see fit to putting around $80 million into a pot for redevelopment. The condition would be that a plaque in a prominent spot would be displayed crediting either my Drenovian Order of the  Order of Krešimira with its work. We would also like the wording to have some name of your family on showing this was a partnership. Can you think of any projects that we could work on."

Karlis senior thought for a moment or two but it was his youngest son, Prince Motiejus, who began the response. "I have a suggestion. You are a nation with various religious orders and we have our Spearman of the Dievasian Order, a cermonial but religious order." The Prince was a member and the group were limited to just 60 living members. It carried out various ceremonial duties and was a key part of the faith of the nation. "I would like to propose perhaps a joint spiritual area. We could perhaps have a kind of garden, I know your faith places a great emphasis on nature. We could have several buildings for education and recreation, and two residential units allowing our faiths to have visits there and conduct exchanges. What do you think?"

"I think that would be an excellent message to send. Our two families working together to better educate people. I think its a splendid idea. We would naturally approve of this."  Đurađ thought that perhaps things would be coming to a conclusion. "I think we should announce that we have made this agreement, not nation to nation, but family to family thus giving you and your family the credit for investment in the capital and a closer friendship with another nation."
