Matariki 2017
« on: September 16, 2017, 12:04:10 AM »
Spoiler: OOC • show

Matariki is the Maori New Year, it is based on the sighting of certain stars and is a major celebration. It is a time when Maori will journey back to their ancestoral homes from around the world and news shared. Trees were planted to symbolise new life and those who have died in the last  year are honoured by their Iwi. At this time often tribes have a council as it is usually when you can guarentee the whole tribe being together. There are many rituals associated with it as well.

Hunter's Bay Airport was chaos, it always was this time of year, those Maori who had spread across Mundus returned home and as always those who hadn't been home for a long time were greeted with family members singing and dancing as they passed into the arrivals area. To anyone visiting from another culture the airport seemed loud as fierce looking men stamped and slapped their thighs as women sung delicate songs, the theatrics over hugs were exchanged and happy families reunited. This year however King Piripi was planning something different, unlike the rest of the Ngāpuhi he was not returning to the tribal home, after all he was "Not of The Iwi" and this year he intended to keep it that way. As such he had invited the nations of Mundus to come and join him and the royal family at the Hunter's Bay Palace an island complex which sat in the nations capital. It may have looked rugged but it was the epitimy of luxury and Piripi was looking forward to his hosting duties. Ceremonial canoes had been dispatched to the mainland, just a few hundreds meters away and soon the King hoped his guests would arrive and be offered drinks on the quayside before, all together, making their journey to the Island. He stood with his five year old son Kimo who, like his father was dressed in traditional attire, he was playing with his small rugby ball throwing it up and catching it, occasionally dropping it and unable to predict its uneven bounce chasing it hap hazardly until it came to a stop, much to his father's amusement.

King David had fond memories of the Commonwealth, he had come a while back now to one of their ceremonies honouring their war dead and had found the place fascinating, the history geek in him enthralled at the rituals and symbolism of the culture. Therefore when the invite had come he hadn't hesitated, a chance to join in a celebration and thankfully it fell on a week when he had Rhiannon. She was excited, she'd been told that it was going to be like a party with food and dancing and she liked those things, because parties usually meant cake and jelly and ice cream.

They'd flown in the night before and even though they'd been shown through security quickly they had witnessed several of the welcome home ceremonies. "What are they doing Daddy?" a puzzled Rhiannon asked. David tried to remember the way that Piripi had explained things when he was last here but he failed to find the correct words at first.

"It's a way of saying welcome home with special dances. Each action means something." He could see his daughter looked just as confused as she'd been moments before. " Put it this way....you know that boy at your school who used sign language?" Rhiannon nodded, she'd learnt a few basic signs and was proud of her skills. "It's like a version of that but only the Maori know it." she looked like she understood and as a girl of a similar age who was singing looked her way she used her sign language to say "Hello how are you" but the girl looked just as puzzled as Rhiannon had been earlier. "It's different to yours" David smiled having spotted her actions, "What did you say anyway?" David asked as he took her hand and headed outside.

"Just hello" Rhiannon sounded disappointed as she skipped alongside her father and out to the waiting diplomatic car. They'd had an evening in the embassy and David had taken her for a walk around Hunter's Bay so she could see the celebrations preparing.

The following morning they arrived down at the dock, Rhiannon dressed in pair of smart trousers and shirt, she had wanted to come dressed as a viking once more but David had said that wouldn't be possible much to her annoyance. The two stood patiently waiting for the others to arrive each holding a small box.

Archbishop Onchú Ó Leannacháin, Apostolic Nuncio to Iwi - Archbishop Ó Leannacháin was definitely looking forward to this year's Matariki, the fascination for the tribal culture and customs, as well the historical aspects, made it quite enjoyable for him while doing his job in the commonwealth. He knew of the terrible happenings that befell this nation years ago, so much suffering and hardships would continue after, but also that strength, hope and love amongs the tribal peoples of this land's renewed once more and one could only hope that it would continue his way; Ó Leannacháin thought a lot about this while visiting the local Christians who were naturally a minority in the Commonwealth, showing respect for his spiritual authority and greatful that God didn't abandon them after all.

He'd put on his finest attire for the occasion and prepared the gift he was going to give to King Piripi and his family. As he ventured out and proceeded to take the diplomatic car through the capital centre, he could already notice the locals practising their rituals and alike, the Mariki spirit is an important part, as it was engrained itself within each individual participating in this, a vital event for the culture.

The Archbishop had been to Hunter's Bay before, but always looked forward to it as it was beautifully located right outside the capital among the sparkling-clear water, the blue sky as well as the smiling radiance being emitted from the sun.

He arrived in the morning near the docks and quitely prayed a bit for himself, the others attending and for the nation itself such as good fortunes and security. It was right before he saw King David of East Moreland and his little wise daughter Rhiannon. "Good tidings upon seeing you here your majesty and your highness" he said while reaching out his hand.

Kurt had arrived some hours ahead, as the Airship was forced to land several Kilometers away from the Airport. Turbulence where too strong and traffic to frequent for a safe landing. Pushing the wheelchair towards the Quay was Julian, their shocked faces concealed under a friendly smile realizing they where about to paddle across. "Well, you already have proven you are a better Captain than you are a Driver." Kurt said in a sarcastic tone, as the two approached the waiting group.

"I'll get you across, don't worry." Julian replied, wearing a Blue Toga instead of a suit Jacket over his Shirt.

"You think the little Moreland Princess will remember you?" Kurt asked, shifting his own Toga around his Wheelchair:

"Doubt so." Julian answered, eyeing the Gift packages stashed on the Wheelchairs back: "She was pre occupied with the Drakkan, and i had a fancy costume. Not to mention she only glanced at our Ship."

Noting the boy the King of Iwi had at this side, Kurt smiled for a short Moment: "We will need a children Table at the Coronation. I mean, the Iwi boy here, the Rashidun one, the Girl from Cascadia, the Moreland Princess and the Divine knows who else. Some  might be Ruling alongside Orion one day on their Thrones."

Kurt turned towards King Piripi, bowing as much as he was able: "Your Majesty. What a peculiar busy Tradition." he said, before coughing slightly: "Prince Kurt of Uburzis, an Honor to meet you. Since my Daughter has not informed me about your Tradition, might i ask if you can have a wheelchair ready on the other site? My Aide should be able to get me across, but i can't actually stand on the one leg i have left." turning towards the Boy, Kurt added: "And hello you, fellow Prince."

Julian meanwhile was waiting at a Respectful distance, simply bowing to Rhiannon, David and then the Nuncio: "Your Majesties, and Delegate."

Declan Cox, was glad to finally be able to get out from his temporary office in Gowu, it had been a fractious few days but then political campaigns would be political campaigns. He held the title of Prefect of Ardia, which in theory meant that he was the senior Achkaerinese diplomat on Ardia and the other Achkaerinese ambassadors on the continent talked to him and relayed concerns home. Thing was it was still a trial project being tried out on Ardia and Alba Karinya, if successful it would expand to Aranye and Albion, Declan hoped that with that expansion they'd figure which embassy he'd set up in permanently. But for the moment Declan was just happy to be able to do his job for a change.

He was accompanied by his wife Holly and daughters Scarlet and Melody. The girls were enjoying some time together, which was a stroke of luck because with the rising tensions over in the Peniche Declan had half expected Melody to get deployed out there. Still there was nothing quite like a family outing was there? And it appeared there was already quite the gathering - Declan knew King David and Princess Rhiannon not personally but by sight he also vaguely recalled the man in the canoe being a Royal, but that was it the others were somewhat of a mystery.

"Your Majesties. Your Highness's." Declan said "And Gentlemen. Declan Cox, Achkaerinese ambassador to Ardia, otherwise known as Prefect, this is my wife Holly and my daughters Scarlet and Melody."

David extended a hand to Archbishop Ó Leannacháin, "a pleasure to meet you" the King responded as Rhiannon copied her father. "How are you finding your time here in The Iwi?" The King asked as he stood waiting for others to arrive. He recognised the Cox family from previous meetings but it took him sometime to think where. "Nice to meet you all" The King greeted the Achkaerin delegation, who once again seemed to have turned up en mass, it made him smile how the Morelander approach was opposite.

"A pleasure to meet all of you here, I believe his majesty of Iwi has prepared for some fun activies to take place no? In any case, I'd wish to give all of those attending these festivites something extra, consider it as a good token from the Holy Father in Celestis". In just a split of a second, papal staff emerged and were bringing with the baskets, filled with an assortment of the best candies and wines ES could offer. Ó Leannacháin turned his attention to little Rhiannon and reassured her that the candies were for her and daddy would get the wine. "Although they say sharing is caring haha...Well I hope this is to your liking!"

The King was delighted to see King David again, he remembered how enthusiastically he'd thrown himself into the canoe ride last time he was here. He instantly made his way over to the Morelander and shaking his hand pulled him close to touch noses "It's good to see you again" the King knelt down and spoke to Rhiannon, "Hello Princess" he said still towering above her despite being on his knees. He extended a hand and leaned forward to touch her nose with his own, she seemed surprised. "It's tradition in our people that we share the breath of life with each other, it makes you part of the tribe" he smiled as he stood up. His son Kimo followed him and reluctantly copied his father pressing his nose to Rhiannons.

The King was dressed in just a reed skirt that was held up by a brightly coloured woven belt, he was a tall man, about 6ft 5 and despite now being in his late 40's he was still heavily muscled, a ring of tattoos covered his right arm. He turned to the others. "I believe this is the first time the rest of you have visited the Iwi on an official capacity, you will find us a nation that love our traditions and sadly we have many rituals, some even say that saying hello is a hour long conversation in itself here." He went over to the Archbishop and shaking his hand pulled him into a clinch touching his nose to his, next he Julian and without a word did the same as five year old Kimo followed his father's example. When Piripi reached Kurt he knelt and with a softness you wouldn't expect did the same to him before heading over to the Achkaerin delegation. "Now if you'd like to board a canoe" several men dressed in the same way as Piripi waited to help them board but Piripi made his way over to the man in the wheelchair, "Arrival by canoe is not compulsory" he began, "But these things were designed to carry goods far across the oceans, I'm sure if you'd like to board we can accommodate a small wheelchair easily. Otherwise we have several motor launches we can use." He left the pair to make their decision as he boarded the front of one of the canoe's. "Kimo, show the Princess how we do this." he pointed to the rear of the boat and Kimo took hold of Rhiannon and steered her towards the back.

"Now, King David has been in one of these before" Piripi smiled broadly, "Either enjoy the ride or take a paddle" the King picked up a heavy carved wooden paddle and took a seat in the middle of the boat. A gentle tap of a drum skin could be heard.

"No...harder" Kimo said as he spoke to Rhiannon who now had a large stick on one hand. The pair began beating a rhythmic pattern as Kimo instructed her.

"Go" Piripi yelled and without warning the Maori paddlers began to paddle in time with the tiny royals drum beat. The King enjoyed days like this, a chance to get back in touch with his nations cultural roots, which actually wasn't difficult here in the Iwi. Soon they had crossed the bay to the Palace and the King got out and held the boat for the others. Once everyone had assembled he lead them up a series of around twenty steps, a cargo lift waited for the wheelchair, and once the party breached the summit and horde of Maori warriors flooded the lawn area, each dressed similar to Piripi. One of them yelled and soon a rhythmic haka began with the lead dancer aggressively approaching each of the men within the party. Kimo had disappeared and could be seen on the flank joining in, his tiny frame dwarfed by the Maori giants of the Royal Guard detachment, choosen for their soldierly skills and knowledge of Maori culture and tradition. One carried a large wooden club that he swung close to the face of the King, perfect control meaning the King was never in danger. As the dance finished the man put the club down and without hesitation the King picked it up and began his own haka, standing alone he slapped his chest til it was raw, yelling up at the skies as he screamed at the men. When it was finally over he twisted the club and offered it back to the first man. The two stood eyeball to eyeball for a few moments before the first man knocked the club to the floor and the two men then embraced. A sweating King returned to his party and explained. "As King David knows a haka is a challenge to work out whether a man is a friend or a foe, when a tribal chief is involved they return the haka, essentially saying the guests are under his protection." The soldiers who had welcomed them now approached and placed fern leaf garlands around each of the guests necks. "Now we can sit, relax, and eat" Piripi lead them up to a veranda that overlooked the bay and a series of soft cushions, almost like beanbags sat on the ground. He invited each to take a seat before offering them bread from off a giant fern.

"Well once again, thank you so much your majesty for bringing us on this journey" the Arhcbishop replied while shaking hands with the King. He then looked happily at the camera which was hanging around his neck, as he was an avid photographer waiting to snap any beautiful moments from now own. "This one here will ensure that memories are to be kept and preserved hehe..." as he put it. After listening to what the King had to say about possible transporation devices to the island itself, he chose to ride by canoe for tradition's sake. After making sure everyone was aboard on their preferred transportation device, the Maori paddlers began to paddle along the well-synchronized beats of a war drum that was typical of Maori culture. Archbishop Ó Leannacháin took a few pics here and there while the canoe was travelling fast and efficiently on the water ways, not just the people but also the animal kingdom residing there, particularly the birds gliding about as well as the fish jumping up and down.

At last they arrived at their destination, and soon began the Maori ceremony that was taking place on the island. The Archbishop here again took pics at some of the most spectacular moments of the event, he became fascinated quickly at attire, the screams being hurdled on the fearsome warriors and finally the swinging of the club. After the ceremony took place the King explained the intrigues behind this whole charade. It was when suddenly the warriors started to place fern leaf garlands around each of the guests necks as well as offering something to eat and drink, much to the Archbishop's relief as he was already starving and thirsty after all that rowing (Yes, he did help out a bit).

"God Bless you your majesty and your people...God bless." the Archbishop said while taking his food and drink before sitting down on one of the small, laid-out cushions; it was now time to mingle and relax with the guests, something Ó Leannacháin looked forward to the most. A chance to get to hear some nit picks of what was going on in the guests' respective countries without the involvement of media and similar institutions. "Tell me my friends, how goes it with your lives these days? A few couple of events have happened since some of us met each other I suppose...Ooh wow this roasted meat has been grilled to perfection, complements to the chefs whi made this extraordinary dinner for us!"

Kurt tried to smile as he felt a little dumbfound, thinking to himself that he should have figured it was the larger boats they'd get across with. Julian helped  him get into the Canoe, carrying the Man into the Boat for a Moment as seemingly he wasn't even able to support himself on his remaining leg. Kurt did however not leave out the paddling, grabbing one of the wooden tools to drive the vehicle forward.
They left the boats last to ensure it was a swift transfer, marveling the Haka:
"I think this could catch on in Uburzis as well." was Kurts comment, back in his wheelchair as he watched the traditional performance: "You can almost feel their determination."

"I like their tattoo culture. Unlike the random skeletons and foreign symbols they print on their skins in Uburzis, these really have a meaning." Julian added, resulting in a laughing snort of Kurt: "Of course you would say that."

Reaching the veranda, Julian again helped Kurt into his seat before stashing the Wheelchair at the perimeter. Julian knelt on one next to Kurt, helping him to some of the Bread as Kurt rolled his eyes: "You are my aid, not my slave."
While Julian proceeded to get the present basket for the King of the Iwi, Kurt smiled to almost everyone, aside from them the archbishop.
Approaching the King, Julian bowed deeply as he handed over a basket with several small Jars, some dried Sausages and ham. Two of the Jars where singled out clearly, both with a Golden Ribbon wrapped around, labeled *Orions Apfelgelee* and *Alexandras Kirschmarmelade* (OOC: Orion's Apple Jelly and Alexandra's Cherry Jam)

King David smiled as Rhiannon began banging the drum, at first she looked awkward but soon got into the spirit of it, the King remembered the last time he was here and his boat coming 2nd in a race, even though it had been friendly fun he still had wanted to win and the effort he'd put in had made his back ache for almost a week after. He once more joined in but this time not really pulling hard on the paddle. As they reached the other side he had a small twinge but nowhere near as bad as last time, his hand though instinctively began massaging the old wound as he made his way onto dry land and waited for Rhiannon. "That was cool" Rhiannon said as she took hold of David's hand.

"Wait for this" David whispered half expecting the Haka. Rhiannon stood open mouthed as she saw it up close, she at one point thought Piripi was going to be attacked and couldn't understand why a King would be treated like this. David knelt to explain, "Every nation has their own traditions, and they should be respected as long as they don't harm people" he explained, "This is something they do to remember their past and I like it" he watched as the Maori King approached.

"Me too" Rhiannon whispered back as they made their way to the cushions, Rhiannon sat cross legged with a plate of food and was about to pick some up and eat when she noticed her father constructing his little offering plate and so sat patiently. He waited for the Archbishop to finish his own seemingly brief blessing before lighting his little candle and offering a whispered prayer to Helus, Marissa and Jekar. Happy with his words he wet his fingers and pinched the candles' wick extinguishing it before picking up some meat. Rhiannon was already beginning to nibble her way through the roast before the smoke from the wick had faded.

Being the athletic type both Scarlet and Melody were more than happy, eager in fact to grab a paddle and help out, Declan had to smile at his daughters exuberance, taking a paddle he proceeded to show them something of a more efficient technique it wasn't often these days that he was able to teach either of his daughters anything, so it did bring a smile to his face.

The Haka was every bit as impressive as Declan had expected, anyone who watched Rugby was familiar with the tradition as the Iwi performed it. Though he surmised that his daughters were subconsciously admiring it for other reasons, girls will be girls he thought as his attention turned to the food, while others offered their own prayers the Achkaerinese quartet did the same except there's was done in silence a silent prayer to the Goddess's of Namis, Kisara and Xiaoyu known as the Trinity in Achkaerin's religion.

"It's good." Holly said as she tucked in, Declan nodded his agreement and turned his attention around the rest of the group quite the gathering wasn't it? He half wanted to inquire as to any fun bets that King David and King Piripi had made over the Rugby World Cup Final but thought better of it unfortunately his daughter showed no such restraint.

"Tell me Your Majesty." it was Melody who spoke looking at Piripi "Have you and King David got anything special in mind over the Rugby Final?"

As the King began pouring chunks of meat off a bone he sat listening to the various conversations and watched the rituals each went through, for his tastes each were very sterile quiet little moments and no great show of faith or thanks. He smiled to himself as he watched his son expertly use a knife to fillet a fish that was served on a large leaf, for a young boy he was rather skilled at things like that, probably a result of his father sending him to Boy Scouts twice a week. "To answer you Archbishop" the King began, "We've been very excited by the World Cup, a chance to celebrate our love of rugby with the world, and show of our nation, and to have Matariki just before the final makes it perfect. I've missed only a handful of games that have taken place here. I think we should be allowed to host it every year." he poured himself a fruit juice from one of the large pots that were sat on the ground. "Otherwise our nations been just ticking along, a new port, a new embassy in the Utmen Republic, I guess trying to put the dark days behind us." He had no wish to talk about them, it was a special day and the focus should be on the year just passed and preparing for the one ahead.

"Couldn't wait I see" a woman's voice came from behind them walking down the grey stone steps that lead to the lawn where they sat. She was smiling despite her scolding of the King. "Please forgive my attire" she addressed the group as the King stood and kissed her.

"May I introduce my wife Maata, despite being tasked with keeping me from mischief she fails often due to refusing to give up her day job." the pair sat down Piripi holding her hand as he selected food for her and poured her a drink.

"I just think a royal should see something of the real world, and I wasn't always a Queen" she smiled. "I have a job working a few days a week in the local Accident and Emergency Department, I thought it only fair to do a shift so I came straight here. Thankfully a nice quiet morning, seems most people head to the old tribal grounds for the festivals so Hunter's Bay gets pretty quiet" she explained before scolding Kimo for flicking the scales from his fish accidently in the direction of Kurt and Julian. "What do you say?" she said quietly.

"My apologise sirs" Kimo stood as he spoke, gave a small nod and then sat back down.

"As for your question Miss" Piripi smiled, "I believe that will be top of the agenda later, maybe after a few drinks, I think we owe the Morelanders a spot of revenge after the Quad Nations. I understand that sister of yours had a bet at a sporting occasion with a Seaforthian once, a case of whiskey I believe?" He had heard of these Ostlake Games and hoped his Maori could one day compete after all they loved competition, even a game of monopoly got highly competitive among the Maori. "Perhaps if we lose I donate to this MPS charity I believe you support?" he remembered the King's son having the condition, "and if you lose something to a camp survivors charity?"

Julian had started to fillet a fish for Kurt, who suddenly held Julian's wrist tight and shook his head: "Don't." was Kurt's answer, short yet with a warning tone, while taking the fish to himself and filleting his own piece. Julian retreated slightly, pouring himself a glass of the exotic juice. He seemed always guilty and was watching his surroundings as he drank from it with a rather childish glee. Only as Kurt raised an Eyebrow Julian silently formed the word "Try it" almost pouting, holding the cup to Kurt who sipped, and smiled. A smile as wide as to almost reach from one of his ears to the other as he handed the cup back to Julian.

As the Queen joined the gathering, Kurt did try his best to get a proper bow to her done from his seated position. Julian went with bowing his head down to the ground as he was already kneeling to start with.
"Accidents and Emergency Departments sadly run to thin in our own countryside" Kurt said, picking up what the Queen had mentioned: "The senates usually don't want to allocated much money into it, as so little people are ever only affected by even a single expansion. Though life has a way to teach you better than to think it enough."
Brushing of some of the scales from Kimo, Kurt returned the Gesture with a small nod: "No offense taken, just be a bit more careful."
Before turning his attention back to the Queen: "My current goal is to bring a project for Convicted Cadets to life that actually gives them a place to leave school during holidays, should their family reject them, and bring them an actual chance to get a hold in adult life. While our system does claim to have the goal to bring them back into society by putting them in boarding schools instead of prison, not only is the difference frequently only nominal in nature, the stigma they carry on, and their Family disowning them, is leaving them alone on the streets as soon as they graduate."

Julian's attention was drifting more to the other attending people, watching them while Kurt was in conversation.

The group remained sat on the lawn until all had eaten their fill of the food, Kimo had eaten several helpings of cinnamon roasted pineapple and now was feeling a little ill, his father however was sure that given several moments without stuffing his face he'd be fine. A soldier dressed in a khaki uniform and slouch hat approached and saluted the King, "Your Majesty the parade is about to begin when you and your guests are ready." The King thanked him and then stood.

"We have a military parade of sorts as part of the festival, we've seating arranged by the water." The King walked with the group down towards the area where they had first landed, several large comfy looking chairs had been set up with a small low table in front of them full of glasses and bottles of various things. "It's a little different to the others and I also have a request for you to consider while it takes place." In the distance a phalanx of large canoes could be seen approaching, each with a flag hoisted in the centre, the sound of a drum could be heard echoing around the bay. "You see our nation is a little complex, we have ten tribes that agreed to form one Commonwealth, each tribe has their own chief and that chief holds territory which he is entitled to make certain decisions on. Each of the chiefs have been urging for the tribes to have more of an input into dealings with foreign nations and I have a little scheme to change that, and hopefully you can help me."

The first boat was approaching its gunwhales lined with soldiers, half of whom stood as the boat pulled level with the King and his guest. The King waved to the crew who once past sat back down rejoining those who were paddling, the rear of the boat had a single soldier stood holding their regimental colours. "Most of our infantry regiments and naval vessels have links back to an Iwi, however that's changing more and more now." he explained as the next boat came by, "What I would like you to all consider is allowing yourself to be adopted into an Iwi, it would mean no burden to you but would hopefully create an affinity between yourselves and our people." He tried to watch the faces for anyone looking offended.

"To the Morelanders the Ngāti Rongomaiwahine Iwi I believe would be a good choice, their motto of "By Our Actions We Are Known" is very similar to your own, I believe you would find them a tribe that share a lot of your ideals and give you something to build upon as friends."

" Archbishop Ó Leannacháin" he turned to the ES ambassador, "The Te Whakatohea Iwi have a motto of "We Believe", many of our nations religious scholars come from that Iwi and I think you may find it interesting to be part of their family."

"To Neu Uburzis the Ngāti Kahungunu  Iwi have shown an interest in you joining their family. They have a rather young chief in the form of Kauri Timoti, he is only just turning 16 in a few days time and I believe with your nation having a young leader in the making they could become good friends and be supportive of each other."

"Finally the nation of Achkaerin, you have a reputation of young women taking on great responsibilities, the Chief of the Ngāti Paoa is a 20 year old girl called Maata Mere, many of her Iwi believe one day she will be a great politician here in our nation, perhaps it would be fitting." The King had been talking while watching the various boats come past and now he stood as the last approached. Unlike the others the men in that boat all stood relying on the momentum they had built up to keep the boat moving, instead of a flag at the rear only it had one at the front too, this one unlike the others. As the wind picked up it was possible to see that this one was an old tattered one, bullet holes clearly visible in it, the wind held it horizontal for a moment or two as a gust of wind blew, the name "1st Royal Regiment of Hassop" clearly visible on it. "We call that Rangi's Banner" the King said proudly, "In the opening days of the war against the invaders a group of Maori climbed a sheer rock face and assaulted that Regiments camp in the darkness, the first strike by our people to reclaim our lands." he spoke proudly of the acts of his ancestors. "The men of that attack are the forfathers of that unit.....my unit" he was proud to have been a member Commonwealth Special Forces Regiment and never having expected to have been King he had served many an operation, as he saw the banner at the back, his own regiments colour he picked up his club from the floor and pointed it at the boat shouting loudly. "I am Piripi Sevasi, not of the Ngāpuhi but of The Iwi." he jabbed the club into his own chest before pointing back to the boat, "We are the followers of Rangi, the men who climbed the cliff are our fathers, their children our brothers, we shall forever keep the Commonwealth free" the Regimental creed was yelled between the boats and the men who cheered loudly as they finished, with the boat now past the spectators on shore the men remained standing and picked up their paddles and began propelling the boat once more singing the song of the Commonwealth's greatest hero and Piripi's ancestor.

"Who was this man
Who put out the challenge?
A chief from Ngapuhi
This was Rangi Umaga
He was a strong man
In the eyes of his Maori people
He challenged the government
Of the white skinned people
The Bay was his home
Tapeka his lofty mountain
Be strong, oh friend
Respected Rangi Umaga
Tapeka was climbed
and the flagpole of evil knocked flat
to overcome the power of the enemy.
Keep alert there Rangi Umaga!
A chief of Ngapuhi
A strong man
The pride of the Maori people
Keep alert there Rangi Umaga!"

Kimo was stood singing along, a story in song that all the Maori knew well, he was proud of his ancestor and the sight of the young boy singing and actioning with his club showed the importance of the story to the people.

Julian was trying very, very hard not to come off too greedy as he was munching the pineapples, watching Kimo he envied the young boy for being able to just stuff himself as much as he wanted without having to keep up pretense. He really missed those times.
"We really should buy a crate of organic Pineapples and get them on the Airship on our way back" Kurt mentioned, as he took noted of Julian's craving.

It took them a little moment to get Kurt back into his Wheelchair, and as they reached the Waterside again the watched the ships draw closer. With a gleaming in his Eyes Julian watched the procession, while Kurt seemed thoughtful listening to the King, his expression a lot more serious: "It is a lovely Gesture, and knowing Orion he would be more than happy, but being an Adult and knowing my own Culture, i have one Question. Are we talking about me an Julian becoming Iwi, or a symbol for our Nations? I could accept the first, without much though. I am open minded to change, and while i respect Traditions, i always think we need to go further. Yet if we talk about a Symbol for the Nation, the Senates and through them the People can be hard to please, and they would expect me to consult with them first. Our Nations are probably rather similar in that department, as they have to learn to trust Diplomacy and Gestures after centuries of Isolation."

Kurt fell silent for a moment, before shaking his head: "I will agree to this, Alexandra would have wanted me to. And Orion needs me to."

Julian was mindlessly watching the Ships, only adding a small bit: "Would that mean getting a real Tattoo as well? Like a true meaningful?"

Kurt snorted laughing: "Don't you think got enough ink on your skin for one year?"  turning back to the King and the other Guests he nodded:
"So, since my Aid mentioned it in a way, how would we actually become Iwi? From what i have seen from your culture it won't be a Piece of Paper getting signed, but probably an intriguing ceremony?"

The King laughed at Julian's response, "Not all Maori are permitted to get a tattoo, or as we call them "Tā moko", they are intended to tell of your families history and that of yourself, while it may look a pattern to the knowledgeable each is a message. Each person must get the permission of their Iwi's chief before having one.....but in time who knows, you may get one." The King then thought of the second question, "I think I must explain what I meant when I said "you", in our culture it is often seen as you represent your people at all times, even the youngest childs actions reflect on the Iwi. WHen I said "You" I meant your nation, we would adopt you all......we'd probably become the largest nation on Mundus. It wouldn't grant your people citizenship but would hopefully see some cultural connections between our lands. The process is simple enough, a representative of your people would meet with the tribal chief, you would exchange breath and a ritual known as Whāngai is performed, its simple enough and literally involves the person walking the perimeter of the tribes homestead reciting some traditional poem.....then you get drunk." the King laughed once more. "I hope that cleared it up for you.....so by accepting literally every Neu Uburzis citizen could claim to be part of  the Ngāti Kahungunu if they wished because of course adoption must be a two way choice."

The Archbishop was in full awe of what the King had to share with the group, such an honorable thing for him to do, giving each and everyone a chance to become a part of their community and made a full bow to show how greatful the Ecclesiastical State was while saying. "Why, thank your your highness, of course I accept this gracious offer of yours, I believe too that both of our peoples can learn one thing or another from each other, certainly. It would be great for the holy father to meet some of the Te Whakatohea either through direct audience with him in the Vatican or vice versa. I'm very much interested in that adoption process and am quite surprised about how open this society is, something which we Christians try to achieve as part of our lifestyle..."

Julian nodded slowly, retreating a little as he seemingly blushing and feeling slightly embarrassed. Kurt was contemplating the words, before nodding again: "I think i can say i do have that Authority. If not, well they can try sue. Just it sees my aid would have to do the Ritual, or we wait until Orion's coronation. I can't exactly walk. Talking about that." Kurt scribbled down several notes before turning back: "We need to make sure that Kauri Timoti and other officials of the Ngāti Kahungunu, please excuse if i pronounce that wrong, get an extra invitation from the one you as Nation will receive then."

Noting the Archbishop mentioning Christianity and their goals, both Julian and Kurt simultaneously raised an eyebrow but stayed silent.

David always enjoyed a good military parade, it was one of his biggest regrets in life that first his knee and then his back had stopped his military career. He still wore his uniform as any honourably discharged soldier was proud to do, but somehow it didn't feel the same. He was always entitled to wear Colonel's uniforms of various regiments but never did, they were not his beloved Alpine Cadre. He had enjoyed his previous visit and had no hesitation in joining in with the canoe race the last time he'd enjoyed Maori hospitality. "I'd be delighted to become part of their Iwi, if they are truly offering a chance, I look forward to meeting my new Iwi's chief." David smiled.

"Are we Maori now?" Rhiannon was puzzled?

"Not fully" David whispered to her, "We'll always be Morelanders but you can have family all over Mundus" David explained.

Declan nudged Scarlet as Piripi explained his idea, when it came to young Achkaerinese women taking on great responsibilities Scarlet was, once Royalty and nobility was discounted, the obvious such person.
"Go on." Declan whispered

"As one such young woman." Scarlet said "I would be humbled on behalf of Achkaerin to accept your proposal Your Majesty and I would very much like to meet this Chief as I'm sure many other people in similar roles to myself would be."

The King was pleased, it had taken a little bit of negotiation with The Iwi to get some willing to take on this piece of foreign policy but in the end many of them had seen the positive nature of the action.  With the military style parade over the group returned to the Palace itself, inside was a long hall, it was located a few floors down among the rock that the Palace itself was built upon. The Hall was a hustle and bustle of people, many dressed in traditional or military attire, at the far end was a hatch at which great smells of roasting pork and other fragerances filled the room with an inviting smell. The arrivals were all but ignored as the King showed them to a long set of benches that ran down the long wall of the Hall. The rest of the bench was already occupied by groups of people enjoying food and drink sharing stories and tales of their family.

"We have a feast here as one nation, across the land each Iwi will be holding their own, now that you've agreed to join one we shall this afternoon transport you to their event, it'll be a chance to meet the new families. First however I thought you may like to relax."

A small child ran up to Kimo and handed him a belt and headband with feathers stuffed into them. He smiled strapped the belt around him and put on the headband before preparing to run off. "Son" the King said firmly, "Take Rhiannon with you....I think she'll enjoy this" the Prince nodded and motioned for the Morelander Princess to follow him. The King watched as Kimo joined a group of ten children of a smiliar age and they helped Rhiannon put on the headband and belt. "It's a game called Manu Tī"  the King watched as the hall floor emptied and left six groups of children all of a similar size as Kimo and Rhiannon, "We play games by height not age here, even in rugby we play by weight not age, maybe one day it'll help us catch up to you Morelanders" The children spread out around the hall, it was noticeable now that the belts and headbands were of different colours and each had ten feathers distributed between the two. "The aim is simple, when the whistle blows try and grab the other teams feathers without them grabbing yours. They play for five minutes or so then the whistle goes again, the winning team is the one with the most feathers." The whistle went and the hall descended into organised chaos as children darted trying to catch the feathers of their opponents, children darted and twisted around each other as two adults patrolled to make sure that no one got too physical. "BEHIND YOU KIMO" the King yelled as he watched his son about to be ambushed and smiled proudly as his son side stepped, twisted, snatched a feather and than ran off.

The King turned back to his guests and noticed a figure down the table, "Kauri Timoti of The Ngāti Kahungunu" the King shouted and motioned for him to come over, the young boy approached and bowed deeply, the King taking hold of an arm and pulling him onto the bench. "Kauri, today we're equal, two tribal chiefs enjoying a plate of food together" the King put his plate of meat between them and broke a piece in two giving it to Kauri who ate with a smile on his face.

"It still doesn't seem right" the young man seemed pleased to be sat with his King.

"Well your grandfather named you, it's your right." The King turned to Julian and Kurt, Kauri here is the new chief of his tribe. His grandfather died three months ago after a glorious life. I fought alongside him and he was a great man, sadly his son, Kauri's father died during the war for our freedom and so the Chiefdom passed to Kauri here, at 16 he is now my Youth Advisor along with Maata Mere who will be the Achkaerin connection, the two of them are doing quiet a good job, they organised this."  The game was getting frantic behind them with only a few left with feathers and gangs forming to steal them from them.

"You're too kind" Kauri blushed.

"Not at all, Kauri these two gentleman from Uburzis have accepted your offer, they'll be heading back to Poletia with you this afternoon." Piripi explained.

"I look forward to it." A whistle blew and Kauri stood, "Sorry I must go and organise the next game" he disappeared off into the crowd of now out of breath children.

"So, you see we have a strong youth activities programmes, I have a hope of some kind of youth fellowship, I know the Morelanders have their More and Mundus programme, is this something we can join in, maybe extend between the four of us?"

"See if you can reach the Airship and tell them to be ready to be on the move later. No point in having back and forth Travel when we can have them follow us." Kurt ordered Julian. Kauri hadn't been staying long enough for Kurt to give a proper introduction, but that could come later.
"We need to clarify some parts of the Ritual later as well." Kurt added, before turning to the King, as Julian typed a message to the Ship Crew.

"Your Majesty, our Senates are discussing to join the CMA as observers currently, so chances are we could get a similar agreement already. Yet i do see potential in having the next generations exchanging experiences in a more precise Treaty than a vague Agreement tagged on another Organisation."

"Well maybe next year we meet up on the Festival of Sail in Moreland with more Young Crews." Julian added, with a shy smile as he was typing the message: "I mean i did lead my Crew to Sail a Galleon from Sturmheim to Portsworth. Almost all of the present Nations seem to have notable Naval history. I can see potential to expand on the Idea without having to fabricate a whole new Gathering."
The smack to the back of his head with a cane didn't hit to hard, Julian rubbed the impact with a hiss, as Kurt disapprovingly scolded him: "Next time Julian, don't look onto the phone Typing when addressing a King. Not to Mention addressing him Properly to start with."

The King sat watching Rhiannon and the other children play their game, it reminded him a little of tag rugby, perhaps it explained why the Iwi had such a decent team. He almost zoned out of the conversation as he watched Rhiannon grab one or two feathers before losing one of her own, she darted back after the child who had took hers and got one back before hurrying off. He was pleased to see she was having fun and getting to know other children, one day her and Kimo would be the two leaders of their nations and it would be nice if they were friends too, beside they would understand which each was going through. David turned back just as the game was finishing.  "We've always been happy to have More and Mundus open to all nations, I'd have no issue including The Iwi and welcome it with Neu Orbarius too if they'd be interested."

"Youth initiatives are always of great importance" Declan said "After all our children are the future that is a certainty. Tim Carpenter's great initiative opened the door for greater awareness of such initiatives and gave those that hold titles such as 'Youth President' the stage upon which they can be taken seriously. I completely endorse such initiatives and more to the point so does Achkaerin, there's great potential - maybe some sort of youth games is in order.

But also since we're talking about such initiatives a while back our Crown Princess floated something called the Mundus Youth Assembly, in broad terms one could describe it as a youth CMA but the resolutions as it were being non binding, it was designed to be the means by which the young people could have a voice and express their opinions on the world stage. It is something the Crown Princess hasn't given up on seeing materialize so if we're going to talk about expanding youth opportunities that's something that I'd float with each of you."

The King was rather pleased with how the others had jumped at his attempt of forming some kind of cultural link, but then the mention of the CMA had come. "With respect we've seen the CTO fail, your nation have even got out, while I like the idea of Youth Games and the like mimicking organisations that are not fit for purpose isn't something I support. I know you and East Moreland support them and that is your prerogative but frankly we won't be joining such matters."

"There will be time to all chat about politics and the like later" Queen Maata explained as she called Kimo over and made him sit and have a drink. The boy would run around all day given half a chance but even forget to eat and drink, the Queen was enjoying her son telling her all about the fun of the games he'd been having. "Remember to play nice" she kissed him on the forehead and let him return to the game. It was getting close to the time that the guests would need to leave for their various Iwi's that were offering them hospitality.

The first of the chiefs to make their way over was Kauri Timoti of the Ngāti Kahungunu, the 16 year old had finished organising the games and was about to head back to his people. "Gentleman" he addressed Kurt and Julian, "If you'd like to follow me, we've a short journey. Thankfully his majesty has provided a helicopter." The young chief lead them back up to the lawn where a military helicopter with a rear ramp was waiting, several soldiers who'd been in the parade where already waiting inside strapped in and began to undo their straps to stand as their Iwi's new chief approached. "Please stay in your seats." he smiled, "It's a day to celebrate and forget formalities, well we have one left" he smiled as he showed the two to their seats before taking his own, an Air Force loadmaster checked each of them before the helicopter took off. It followed the line of the coast, the Ngāti Kahungunu's home Rūnanga[1] was a little village that sat on an island formed by a river delta. The helicopter touched down and the soldiers began exiting two of them helping Julian and Kurt unstrap. "Please join us"" Kauri motioned for them to follow, a large crowd was already joining them from the houses, sounds of singing as they greeted the soldiers with garlands and hugs, a group of children ran up to the guests and began throwing garlands at them before skipping off. "We'll do the ceremony in an hour or so if you wish, otherwise we can just enjoy the Iwi being together. Do you have any questions?"

Meanwhile back at the Palace Tipene Tama the chief of the Ngāti Rongomaiwahine Iwi approached, he was dressed in a smart black naval uniform bearing the rank of Lieutenant-commander. He snapped a smart salute. "Your Majesty its time for me to take King David and Princess Rhiannon to our Rūnanga" he waited for his King to give him permission before escorting the two Morelanders up to a waiting boat. "Your Majesty, Your Highness" he addressed each as a smartly dressed crew held the pair aboard. "We're just a few miles down the coast, a nice little beach front village, sadly a major hotel chain is setting up just down the coast but we'll get there" the guests sat down the driver of the motorboat gunned the engine and they set off. "Look" Tipene pointed out to sea as he sat next to Rhiannon, "Dolphins.....they bring good luck if they follow the boats" as though responding to his request the animals turned and began porpoising a few meters away from the boat, the salty splash just about reaching the boat. They stuck with them for a few minutes before turning to head towards the beach, a series of camp fires was already being lit a clear sign that the festivities would go on long into the night. "Can I just check your happy to take part in the ceremony?" the chief asked the King as members of the village helped them ashore.

"Ambassador" a tall greying man with a face full of tattoos approached O'Leannachain. "My names Petera Rangi, Chief of the Te Whakatohea Iwi" he extended a hand, "Ironically my name is a Maori version of one of your saints, he doesn't have much of a following here." He had lead them outside to where their own helicopter waited. "I'm a bit of a scholar on religion but truth be told Christianity is one I've never read much on, it would seem we'll have a chance to learn from each other." Several soldiers waited for them and once ensuring they were secure took their own. They flew for about half an hour before to the passengers seemingly descending into the woods below. "Our Iwi grew out of the forests, the glade here is our home." The helicopter touched down in a large glade about the size of four football pitches and the passengers got out. In the trees stood various cabins and lodges and about 200 meters into the woods was a large man made bowl in which the tribes administration centre sat. They walked through the woods to find the village already out celebrating and a gathering of elders beginning to form around a campfire. "please come join us, and take a seat" he waited for the Ambassador to be seated on a large log that had been carved into a kind of sofa style seat. "So is there anything you'd like to know about our invitation?"

A young girl dressed in traditional attire approached, "Hello." she addressed Declan and his party. "My names Maata Mere, chief of the  Ngāti Paoa. The 20 year old extended a hand and with deceptive strength helped Declan to his feet before pressing her nose to his and exhaling harshly in the traditional Maori greeting. "If you'd follow me" as she walked up the stairs the long skirt showed glimpses of bare feet as she climbed. Once outside there was a small Catamaran waiting. The rest of the Iwi who had been attending at the Palace had already got on board with many enjoying the sensation of relaxing on the boats large front net. "Please relax, it'll be around two hours until we get to our home region. Hopefully we'll see some whales or something" Maata went and changed, the traditional gear was discarded and the young chieftan reappeared wearing an Iwi rugby shirt and shorts. "Can I interest anyone in a beer, glass of wine maybe" she carried a bucket full of water with mini bottles in and cans of beer. The journey was rather a dull one in a way, no whales, no dolphins but at least the sea was flat which meant they made steady progress. "I must warn you, our Iwi are people of the sea, this may be slightly different to what the others experienced." as they rounded a headland a bay opened up to reveal many homes stood on stilts a chorus of music could be heard and a whole fleet of boats was floating in the crescent the homes made, each lashed to the one next to them making a giant floating raft. People where diving and splashing about in the clear sea while the smell of fish being grilled on an open fire filled the air. "Welcome to our Iwi" Maata smiled as she leapt from the boat onto a smaller one and motioned for the others to follow as her crew lashed their boat to the others. "If you wish we have more casual attire you can borrow, wetsuits even, if you want anything let us know. Any questions about the adoption process."

As Julian was pushing Kurt towards the destination, said one spoke to Timori:

"Just something i had mentioned to his Majesty. You see, I can't walk. So should that be a problem my Aid Julian here would do the Ritual in my place. Yet there is a sort of Problem with that as well."

After an awkward moment of silence, Kurt spoke again: "Julian is what we call a Convict Cadet. It is basically our cultural Equivalent to Youth Prison, just it's a military boarding school instead of being incarcerated the whole time. They still have some disadvantages over the other students, but that's beside the point right now."

Julian was looking down, not making eye contact.

"Nice for you to welcome me to your tribe...Peter...we got a few saints named Peter, don't get me wrong haha, but what strikes me is that you're a chieftain, a great leader of a great tribe who has the same name as his holiness who took that name as well, perhaps it's the divine who has blessed us with such a occassion who knows, it was destined for us to meet after all...Well likewise, it'll be interesting and gladdenning to get to know your religion and how you do things in your country". The Chieftain led the Archbishop to his helicopter, making him wonder where Petera was going to take him. They flew for about half an hour before to the passengers seemingly descending into the woods below, and journeying until they reached a large campfire where the tribal elders and the rest of the village were having a fine time. Petera offered the Archbishop to sit on a large log that had been carved into a kind of sofa style seat, a gesture which O'Leannacahin accepted gracefully. He looked into the camp fire to contemplate and waited a few seconds to answer the Chieftain's question. "If only the Youne Pope was here among us, he would have liked it and is the type of person one could sympathise with...so am wondering we will have many more of these cultural interactions between our great peoples?"

The setting was brilliant, and truth be told almost like home. The Cult of Namis faith taught that the God Ezotl created the world and when he came to create man he created them out of water, so the Achkaerinese always felt a special connection to the seas. Declan had to smile though he noted that Scarlet and Melody were marveling about the place more than he was.
"An impressive place I must say." Holly said "Quite beautiful as well."

"I'll be brief because I'm certain that Scarlet is keen to converse with another young authority figure, she's Achkaerin's Youth President so the opportunity to talk with someone like yourself is something she's keen on." Declan said "If I understand it correctly it's similar to a twinning of cities except we're twinning your Iwi here with our nation?"

Kauri Timoti listened to Kurt and Julian carefully he knew the pressure he was under being the youngest of the various Iwi's chieftains, he knew the other Iwi's would in a way find the fact a "child" was a chief a bit of a joke but he was determined to make a good job of it. "I must confess the fact that Julian is a criminal could be a problem. You see justice here is a little different to your cultural norms, we use something called Utu, essentially the punishment fits the crime. If I can give you an example, if a person commits arson their punishment will probably see them serve prison time as well as an element of Utu, in that case doing community service rebuilding something, or perhaps even work as a volunteer fireman or something, the judge can be quiet creative. In extreme cases it determines the methods of execution used like you may have seen in some recent cases with those war criminals who occupied our nation." There was genuine hatred in his final sentence. "Whether we can permit Julian to take part in the ceremony would depend whether in the eyes of the Iwi he has gone through Utu." They had reached some seats at the foot of the tribes main lodge and sat down. "So sadly I must ask what you did?" he addressed this to Julian and waited.

Petera was a well respected scholar of the Maori faith and was delighted to have the man's interest. "I'm aware of your belief that Mundus and life on it was created in six days, while your God took a 7th to rest, however that is very different to our nations belief. Here we believe that there were two original Gods, Ranginui and Papatūānuku, thankfully we often shorten their names to Rangi and Papa, probably a good thing or you foreigners would never pronounce them right hey." he chuckled before continuing. "Rangi was the sky father and Papa the Earth Mother, they held each other in a tight embrace. They have many children and soon the space between them becomes cramped and so their son Tane separates them and Rangi remains above us to watch over and guide us, hence the stars for they guide our paths across Mundus, and Papa stays beneath us as any good mother to nurture her children. There are then a great many other stories about the Gods but you will learn them with time." They had now been presented glasses of ale by some of the women who were carrying food around the woodland bowl, it was beginning to fill up as families gathered. "As for more cultural gatherings we have many through the year as an Iwi, once our ceremony is completed you will be part of our Iwi, therefore naturally you may attend any you wish, and it is our hope that we can come visit our brothers and sisters of a far off land too." He clinked his glass of ale against the ambassadors and took a sip.

Maata had been listening to the conversation while clambering onto the ships cabin roof, she turned and knelt down above them. "Its a little bit more advanced than twinning" she smiled as she watched her friends leap into the sea. "You see twinning means you just do the odd exchange and the like, we're adopting you and your people. That means everyone of the people of Achkaerin who wish can call themselves part of the Ngāti Paoa. You for example would become The Honourable Prefect Declan Cox of the Ngāti Paoa, Prefect to Ardia" she smiled at the full term of address, "Even your monarch would become His Imperial Majesty Emperor Peter Azurewind of the Ngāti Paoa" Maata watched a couple of her friends try and backflip off the cabin and land with a slap, "Ouch" she laughed as she watched them surface rubbing their pinking stomachs. "It would mean very little I assume to the average citizen of Achkaerin, but it would entitle them to attend our meetings, to be part of our Iwi's traditions and Gods hope it never happens, it would give them a safe haven should they ever need it as our Iwi do not turn its back on its people." she smiled stood up and launched herself into a ball splashing into the sea, she swam back to the boat and clambered back on board. "That all sound ok to you?"
