Seaforth-East Moreland Thread
« on: June 01, 2018, 03:42:22 PM »

My Dear King David,

With the return of my nation and the collapse of the Tripartite and the CIS, there are no official ties between our nations. I echo your thoughts in that I believe the bonds of freindship between our nations were never broken, surviving beyond the broken alliances. I am deeply honoured that you would ask me two become Sword Father to Princess Rhiannon and I accept unreservedly. I know Joshua felt blessed and enriched at the friendship of East Moreland and the Ironside family and I wish to reaffirm that relationship. As such, I will announce that my first foreign visit will be to our friends across the Illumic, the Kingdom of East Moreland, at your convenience.

Regards,

Andrew III
King of Seaforth

The Morelanders had selected the castle at Rockhampton as the venue for meeting the new King of Seaforth, it would have less media glare than a meeting at Northfort and Ostlake was already filling up with people for the upcoming games. Beside the King knew that Andrew had almost had the crown thrust upon him, unlike himself the new King hadn't had years of preparation for the role and the things it brought with him. Rockhampton may have been selected for the fact it'd be quieter but that didn't mean there would be any less ceremony for the arrival. A pair of fighters painted in bright Red ready for the Ostlake Games were already circling Rockhampton barracks airfield ready to escort the new King's aircraft in, meanwhile on the ground members of the Rockhampton Rifles stood ready to provide a honour guard. Three members of the Ui Cennesliag military of secondment to Morelander forces had been roped into being on standby to play the Seaforthian national anthem when the King set foot on Morelander territory.

Up at the castle itself Princess Rhiannon was getting into mischief, she'd sneaked into the kitchen with her new pet Fennec Fox, Goldie, she'd been caught red handed feeding the little fur ball some chicken put aside for lunch for the King, his party and the guests arriving. "Please don't tell my Daddy" she pleaded with her security agent who had discovered her sneaking around when she should have been getting ready. "He'll stop my sword lesson again.....and Goldie was sooooooo hungry" she pleaded holding the tiny four month old fox up towards Agent Abby Kenwick as though to prove her point. The tiny fox sat cupped in the upreaching palms of Rhiannons hand and almost seemed to mimic Rhiannon's own pleading face.

"Goldie has to eat his own food ok.....that means those worms and stuff we got you. Once he's bigger he can have chicken ok?" Rhiannon nodded that she understood. "Now, give me Goldie and you go meet your father outside then I don't have to explain what your fox was doing outside his pen again." Rhiannon handed Goldie over and gave Abby's legs a hug knowing she'd not be telling. She hurried outside and across the courtyard to where King David was waiting along with Minister of Defence Sir Harry Samuelson.

"Rhiannon where have you been" David said slightly annoyed.

"I went off exploring and lost track of time....sorry Daddy" She said as sweetly as she could manage, she noticed how her father and Harry both had their ceremonial swords strapped on "Can I fetch my sword and wear it....then we'll all be the same." She sounded hopeful, she was keen to one day be like her father and wear hers all the time. David had suspected she'd lose interest after nearly two years worth of lessons with Sir Charles Townsend but if anything she was getting more and more committed to the study.

"No....you know when you can wear it" David had often had to tell her about trying to sneak off to official functions with the tiny metal blade trapped to a belt over a dress, "It's something to be earned" Rhiannon had forgot how many times her father had said that to her now. "Today is important anyway. Seaforth are old friends, some of our best friends ok. They have a new King."

"That's sad then cos the old one will be dead." She said glumly.

"Not in this case.....Seaforths been a bit strange" he began to explain as they got into the car that wound down the hillside and through the forest before heading out into the countryside surrounding the airport.

"So King Andrew is like what Auntie Joanna is?" Rhiannon asked refering to Matilda's elder sister who was her Sword Mother on the Osman side of the family. David confirmed that was right and didn't have time for more questions as they arrived at the airfield. As he got out of the car the band played the East Moreland national anthem and the Rifles commander presented his honour guard. The King spent a few minutes inspecting the men and chatting while Rhiannon had been waiting near the car with Will Buckley, Davids security agent. She'd found a stick on the ground and was using it to swing and stab in the air, Will spotted and made her put it down the wet stick making her hands dirty. Before they could be cleaned the aircraft of King Andrew began to arrive and the King waved his daughter over.

"You remember what to do?" David asked his daughter who nodded.

As the Seaforthian aircraft stopped at the appointed spot the band began to play accompanied by the Cenneg pipers, David waited for the Andrew to approach and then nudging Rhiannon who stepped forward. "King Andrew welcome to East Moreland and thank you for being my Sword Father" she said extending her right hand for a tiny handshake, she noticed her hand was covered in mud and without thinking wiped it down the side of her pretty blue dress making her father roll his eyes in exasperation.

"Can't keep her out of mischief" David shook his head as he approached, "But yes welcome to East Moreland" David extended his own hand and then introduced Andrew to Sir Harry before taking him for a walk past the Rifles who presented honours, the words Seaforth hung off their colours indicating they'd fought in the Eugenics war. They entered the car and began the steady drive back to the castle. "How have the first few days as King been?" David asked as they entered the dark tunnel made by the overhanging forest trees.

King Andrew smiled as he shook Rhiannons dirty hand.

"My father couldn't keep me clean either." He said.

Taking a gold and blue silk hankerchief from his pocket he handed it to the Princess.

"For your dress. Dirty hands are nothing to be embarrassed about, and I am very honoured to be your Sword Father."

Shaking hands with King David and Sir Harry, Andrew was touched at the effort to have the pipes and Seaforth veterans present.

"They can say all they want to prepare you, but until you have the job, you are never really prepared...and only a King or a Queen will ever really understand. Fully appreciate the...weight...another monarch carries. Things are going well though. The people seem to accept me. They are longing Joshua though. Gave up the crown twice now. They seem to think that means something. They would be shocked to know that all he really wants in life is his family behind him, his enemies in front and plenty of food and drink to go around. I think he might have been a Viking in another life."

"But as I said, it goes well. Seaforth is blessed with friends, both old and new. The resoration goes quickly with all the aid we are recieving. Mountjoy, East Moreland, Rokkenjima...even the Ecclesiastical States. I could spend a lifetime paying our friends back...and that's not such a bad problem to have."

The King watched as his daughter thanked Andrew for the handkerchief but then had no idea what to do with it and so just followed along holding onto it. As the car neared the gates of the old castle a few tourists took photos of the convoy arriving and then probably moaned that they'd been denied the chance to have a tour of the place because of the meeting. David exited his side of the car while a guardsman opened the door for Andrew, Rhiannon hopped out and was unsure what she needed to do now. "Princess Rhiannon" a gruff voice called from across the courtyard completley unconcerned about the high status meeting that was underway. It was Sir Charles Townsend the head of the Court of Canley and Rhiannon's swordsmanship teacher. "I understand you've been misbehaving in the kitchen when you should have been practising your forms" he scolded her, making her freeze in her steps her gaze went between Charles and her father trying to anticipate which would scold her first. "Come here" Charles instructed before David could say a word and with her head bowed. She stood before the old man who looked down at her with a stern face. "What is the purpose of a sword?" He asked his young apprentice the exact same question as he had the first day he began training her.

"To make someone do what you want them to do" Rhiannon said more certain than she had her first attempts.

"Did I want you to sneak into the kitchen this morning?" He asked and watched as Rhiannon shook her head, "No that's right I didn't I wanted you practicing, so I shall use a sword to make you do something I want" he said and instantly a look of resignation came across Rhiannon's face. "I have taken your sword and you shall not get it back until you have done fifty laps of this courtyard, 100 press ups and 100 sit ups." Charles sat down on the wall that ran parrallel to the retreats entrance and gave a view of the courtyard. Rhiannon her head bowed began to trudge past him. "Where are you going?"

"To get changed and start running" Rhiannon said sadly.

"Your dress is already dirty so I'm sure Daddy will be getting you a new one anyway. Get running, you fight when you need to not when your ready" Rhiannon turned and heavy footedly sulked down the steps past her father and Andrew. She stopped as she reached her father seeing the way he looked disappointed in her, "Sorry Daddy, but Goldie was hungry" she said with a tear rolling down her cheek, without waiting for a reply she broke into a little jog and began running the edge of the courtyard.

David felt a little embarrassed but said nothing instead escorting Andrew inside, "Sir Charles" he said politely as he passed his own former sword teacher.

"She's a good girl really" Charles winked, "Just a typical Ironside, thinks more with their heart than their head." He never took his eyes off the jogging Princess, "You cut the corner....that counts as a half" Charles yelled at Rhiannon who said nothing.

David and Andrew made their way inside and up to the balcony that overlooked the lake a few miles away. It was a nice sunny day and so the King ordered refreshments outside. "I sometimes think I need to keep Freya away from Rhiannon, everyone says there too a like" he chuckled as he poured some drinks. "Now, I think it best we get some of the formal stuff done then we can relax a little. I'm keen to formalise what for me already exists, an alliance between our two nations that is focused on two things at the moment. The first is helping you put Seaforth back together, the second is the old priority of ensuring the Illumic's future is determined by Illumic nations and I think we both know the stumbling blocks we potentially face. Beyond that I'd like to formally at some point in the future introduce you to our friends in the CNN. Unlike the CIS of old we have no admission procedure and we insist on you being good friends with all those involved. Now I'm not saying I expect you to join, but you're a nation rebuilding and we have a decent amount of manpower and support we can push your way. I know King Finley of Ui Cenneslaig would vote you in tomorrow, as would I, but as far as I know you, The Iwi and Lodja have zero connection, the ES I believe you've scheduled something with. It'll be interesting to be a fly on the wall for that I suspect" David grinned once more. "So beyond that which I've outlined is there anything you wish to add to our agenda?"

Andrew smiled and silently watched in approval the interaction between the young Princess and her instructor. Commenting as King David escorted him inside.

"Impressive man."

As they reached the balcony and settled into work, Andrew sipped his drink and listened to King David.

"I agree, and Seaforth is coming along nicely. We have received aid from yourselves of course and Rokkenjima. King Finley of Ui Cenneslaig is high on my list of people to meet. He was kind enough to sell us a ship for $1. I have plans for that as well. At a later date I plan to pay it forward so to speak and fully convert it over to humanitarian efforts. Mountjoy and the Rafaelites have apparently done great things down near Heatherington as well."

"I fully believe that a nation must stand on it's own two feet before it can take on the responsibilities and duties required of the international stage. We are close. So very close. You are correct that we have started negotiations with the Ecclesiastical States. Duke Raynald tells me he is close to finalizing a handshake treaty with them. We have no relations, formal or otherwise with either the Lodjan's or the Iwi. That will have to be rectified, of course, after I pay King Finley my respects."

"Ah, the eternal Illumic. Such an asset, such a treasure...and such a pain in the ass. As to that, I agree that the Illumic nations must determine the future of the Illumic. We have stepped up operations to Pre-Fall levels, with an added focus on the Seaforth and Zimalian coasts. Perhaps it is time to revisit the Illumic Council? For the formalizing of our own relations, you are suggesting a full alliance?"

King Andrew finished his drink and leaned back into his chair.

"No King David, I have nothing else save to thank you again for your efforts on behalf of my nation and to prepare for my Sword Fathership. One last thing on a personal note. In recognition of your friendship and the stalwart support you have shown Seaforth over the years, I would be deeply honoured if you would allow me to confer a Barony upon you. Specifically, I would like to attach a barony to the property gifted to you and name you Baron of Hearthstone in the Peerage of Seaforth."

"In my mind we've been allies since we united to take back the Illumic for native nations, hell we even shared a military base for years" David began, "As far as I'm concerned the situation between us should not go back to square one and as such I think we need a formal document between us. In terms of the Illumic Council I took the liberty of expanding it a year or so back to form MICA, with that in mind do we need an Illumic only organisation." David had expected such a discussion to take place and so removed a piece of paper from his folder. "Take a look, let me know what you think"

"So feel free to take a pen to it, edit it however you see fit" David pushed a pen towards Andrew as he leaned back enjoying the view. When Andrew then mentioned the peerage in Seaforth David was a little surprised, "I've not been to Hearthstone in quiet some time" David grinned, "I'd be honoured to accept, just does it mean I have to start wearing a kilt now, because Finley has told me what goes under them and I have to say I'm not really up for that."

“Don’ knock it til you try it.” Laughed Andrew

Andrew finnished scanning the treaty...

“This is acceptable, King David. The Illumic Fleet is charged with patroling its namesake waters and will continue to do so. Thats’s 41 ships, not counting our patrol vessels. Well, be sure to make your way back sometime, Baron Hearthstone, you know we enjoy hosting you.”

King Andrew then crossed over to King David, shaking his hand warmly, sealing the treaty.

David was pleased the deal was done so easily, although he wasn't letting Andrew get away with a simple handshake to cement the deal. "I'm afraid I'm going to have to insist we go through the formalities of a signing ceremony, you know we enjoy our pomp and ceremony" David smiled. "And rest assured I shall be a regular in Hearthstone, I'm fortunate that with the current Prime Minister, Henrietta Quinn , I've someone I can ensure handles affairs of state more than competantly and so I've began a little habit of taking the odd weekend when Rhiannon's at her Mums off. I've brought a football team even" the King grinned, "We're no footballing nation but the Northfort United lads do well in the Champions League and you even missed my own performance at the Football World Cup, even played against East Moreland" the King showed Andrew a picture on his phone of him lining up for the Hygelac team. "So I thought I should try and help promote the game, Roberton AFC, they aren't great but I'm mainly funding their youth setup so hopefully one day we can win the rugby and football world cup. But I'll be using the odd weekend to get out and about abit and Hearthstone will be one of my first trips" He stood and beckoned Andrew to follow him, it'd take his Head of Household, Quinn Germaine a few hours to sort out the signing and so they had a bit of time to relax. David lead the King down to the western wing of the castle, it was there the castle kept a small brewery that supplied a few local pubs down in the town. When the royals weren't in the castle it was open to tourists and so a small tasting room was set up. The King picked up two half pint tasting glasses and twisted the creeking wooden tap on a barrel and a dark black velvety liquid flowed forth. As each glass reached its limit he turned the tap off and then handed one of the glasses to Andrew, "An oatmeal stout, apparently some old recipe found in a manuscript here" The King went back outside and sat on the wall that acted as a hand rail on the steps.

Down in the courtyard the clack of wood on wood echoed around the stonework as Rhiannon, now changed into sports wear was being put through her paces by Sir Charles, it wasn't just the sword that was being used but he was showing her when to aim kicks, use of elbows and knees if in close clinches. "You can go to places like Nemerie and they do that fancy fluttering fencing, its like a dance. We've stuck to a more practical interpretation of swordsmanship" David explained as Rhiannon found herself being tripped and doing her best to keep hold of her wooden sword as she bounced off the cobbles, the action didn't stop as Charles swung blows down towards her each carefully weighted to push her back as she shuffled backwards parrying as best she could. Suddenly she rolled on her belly to the side and swung her sword at Charles ankles but he simply steped over her biting blow took two steps forward and had moved inside her backswing so her arms hit his legs as she found a wooden sword point at her neck.

"Go turn off the stopwatch" Charles said and Rhiannon sprung to her feet and hurried over to where Charles had placed a digital timer. She eagerly flicked the button down, "Well?" Charles asked.

"Seven minutes and 42 seconds" Rhiannon said proudly, "I lasted a minute longer than last week" David clapped her achievement but earned a disapproving look from Charles and promptly stopped as he felt like the schoolboy he had been when Sir Charles had been his tutor for the sword.

"You're still dead" Charles looked grim, "Just more tired and dead than last week" he collected up his practice blades, "Keep practising what I've shown you" he said as he disappeared off into the East Wing of the castle.  Rhiannon waved to her Dad and made her way up the main steps knowing that immediately after sword practice she was supposed to go and clean her boots ready for the next session.

Andrew and David spent the next hour sampling a few tastes of the other two ales on sale here as well as catching up on the news between both of them. As the sun began to set a long table was set up in the courtyard with the two nations flags on the table and two seats looking like thrones from some movie set behind it. The treaty was in the centre contained within two leather bound books  one for each nation. The pair were sat behind it with old fashioned quills in their hand posing for the media before David affixed his signature and then passed his book to Andrew. "So, the important business done is there anything else you need while here, business or personal, just say the word and we can sort it. If your in no hurry feel free to stay and enjoy the rest of the Sampling Room" David said quietly as the media got their shots.

King Andrew enjoyed hearing King David speak of his pass times, the enthusiasm was palpable. He sipped his half pint with appreciation as the watched the clacking of Rhiannon and Sir Charles in the courtyard."

"Oatmeal? Your kidding me."

Andrew grimmaced as Rhiannon finally hit the cobbles.

"I can appreciate the style. The Nemerie school is plenty of flash, little substance. It wouldn't last on a battlefield. It's also part of the reason the Gallowglass favour the Warhammer. Pulp a knight inside his armour...or knock him senseless."

As the two men signed and posed for the media photos Andrew was glad it was over.

"Another run at that oatmeal stout would do nicely I think. I had planned to spend the rest of the week here in East Moreland. I need to familiarlize myself with all of our interests here as well as explore the country a bit. I will be staying at Falkenrith so there is an open invitaion to you and yours to join me for dinner."
