Theo looked at Saskia's phone and shook his head, it was such a shame that people seemed to lack an understanding of the culture of his homeland. That would be something they'd have to change. "Do your people pay much attention to social media. We've more or less made the decision that our family will avoid the thing, always seems nothing but lies and drama." As the Prince spoke with Saskia butlers mingled with the crowd and right on cue one was next to Henrietta as she enquired about Mulled Wine. The servant handed her a steaming glass of the deep red rich liquid and then was away. Princess Constance had got a glass herself and approached the Prime Minister of East Moreland.

"I hope you're enjoying the drink" She voiced. "I myself find this mulled wine a little heavy but its not the festival without it and I have to say it does warm you through once back on dry land. I understand you and your King helped draft the CETO treaty. Its something we're going to get mother to join, can you though tell us a little more about it?"

With the Achkaerin Empress slightly soggy one of the Naval officers on land had been dispatched to bring back a huge fleecy blanket in addition to what everyone else had. A young female Naval officer also had appeared carrying a wooden box. "Your Majesty we've a box here with things you may...erm...require." She handed over the box containing a hair dryer, make up and various hair products. It was not the first time that someone had fallen in and the Navy were pretty old hands on sorting this out.

With everyone seemingly engaged it was about half an hour later that a white coated chef appeared. "Your Majesty, honoured guests" He announced loudly. "If you would care to follow me we have some food prepared for you." He lead the group into the rather intimate court yard of the castle. There was arrayed several large trays suspended above small heaters each filled with food. "We did not like to assume your selections. So we had some fine Cod, Haddock and Halibut. All swimming in the Mhorish just this morning. Each is coated in either regular batter or our special beer batter which gives a lighter crispier texture. Next we have traditional chips, thick cut from potatoes grown on the island. We can then offer you mushy peas, marrowfat peas cooked until they almost liquify. We can also offer a choice of sauces, curry, gravy or my personal favourite some mint sauce, lovely drizzled on the peas." As each of the guests approached the food a young naval cadet appeared next to them carrying a plate on which a basket had been arranged. "Oh and of course as tradition in any Medusalin fish and chip shop dictates served on newspaper." The paper lining the basket was not in fact the pages of yesterdays news papers recycled but was in fact specially made sheets of paper with photos from the days proceedings on and hastily made by some IT team behind the scenes. "Should we have any vegetarians we have vegeterian sausages and everything else is free from animal products." The cadets followed behind their designated VIP and as they made their selection held the plate for the chef before following them to a table and carefully placing the plate down before pulling out the seat for them.

Elisabeth had gone last down the line, she took a seat among her guests. "This may not be a state banquet the likes of which you are used to but it is very popular Friday night food in Medusalin and on various other holidays. It explains why it was selected. We wanted you to see what our people are like. Later if any of you wish we can go to the various beach parties, although I suspect thats more something the young may enjoy" She grinned, "They get a little....over the top." She explained. "What I'd like to have you all think about though while we eat is this. We have here on the island two big problems. The first is our population. With 3.8million of us and an island that I'm told by experts can accommodate around double that number we have room for development. I am therefore going to make each of you an offer. We will, if certain conditions are meet, accept all refugees or asylum seekers your nation gets until we reach a population of 5 million people. Our conditions are that the individual must be aged between 18 and 40, be able to vetted and capable of work. We will of course allow each worker to bring their immediate family. Our second condition is that we would expect a payment of $35,000 per person, the equivalent of their first years wages. After that point they become our responsibility. The second issue we have here on the island is that we have so far no existing trade arrangements. I therefore am offering each of you a deal of reciprocity. For the next two years you will have my guarantee that whatever level of tariffs you set on trade from our nation we will match. You remove all tariffs for us, you get tariff free trade for two years here. Now please consider these matters while we enjoy some tasty food."

With everyone now suitably attired or else safely seated on the vessel that would follow them it was time to make their way out towards the stone box around 300 meters away from the castle's quayside. With just Stasya and Renee taking the motor boat it would be left to one of the cousins of the royal family, Katarina Princele to look after the non-rowers. She was a very small 18 year old cousin who had just recently started at University studying. She was a skinny girl dressed in a naval cadets dark blue trousers with blue wool pullover showing the name of her training ship "The Pup" on its left breast. Katarina was a member of the University Naval Cadet Corps (UNCC) a kind of informal military reserve made up of University students who were considering a career in the forces. "If your majesties wouldn't mind fastening the straps on your seats, if something does happen there are lifevests under the seats" Katarina pointed out before running through a few last minute checks. A pair of naval stewards brought the guests some glasses of wine while Katarina radioed that they were all set to go. "Roger that command" Katarina gave a thumbs up to those on the quayside who cast the ropes off and with a burst of acceleration she took the motor boat out on a wide arc away from the direct line between the rowers and the stone box in hopes of not making the wake a problem for their row. By now a host of other smaller boats were beginning to gather by the box and with some guidance from the marshalls who were ensuring the boats gathering for the ceremony were arranged securely. Katarina waved at some of her friends from the nobility there on private sailing boats and yachts many with decks crowded ready for the festivities later in the day. Katarina dropped the small boats anchor and then joined the two royals. "If you're too cold I can get you a fleece." She rummaged under the seat and found a bag with a grey fleece from the navy. The day was still warm but now out to sea a little the wind was beginning to bite a little. "If you want to join in when they get here we can" the young girl was getting more excited as in the distance they could see the rowing boats approaching. A sound drifted on the wind as they got closer it was possible to hear a song

"Oh, I bid farewell to the port and the land
And I paddle away from our islands white sands
To search for my long ago forgotten friends
To search for the place I hear all sailors end
As the souls of the dead fill the space of my mind
I'll search without sleeping 'till peace I can find
I fear not the weather, I fear not the sea
I remember the fallen, do they think of me?
When their bones in the ocean forever will be"

The visitors found themselves in two large whaleboatswith the seats not taken by the guests taken by large strapping young men from the Navy. At the head of each was a young girl dressed in white long dresses which it was clear they had a wetsuit on underneath. As soon as the groups had begun pulling on the oars the naval rowers had begun the traditional song. Theo sat next to Charlotte pulling on an oar as they travelled. Queen Elisabeth between strokes did her best to hold a conversation with her boat but between being out of breath and the singing it proved to be exceptionally difficult. Soon though they arrived alongside the stone container.

The Vinegar bank was a good two meters square and around a meter deep. It sat on a rock which was just about visible at the high tide. Expertly two of the navy secured the ships and ensured they were lashed next to each other with the motor boat in the middle. "Now we begin" Elisabeth announced standing rather unsteadily and making her way to stand on the bow of the ship. She was passed a microphone by Katarina who turned on her boats PA system. "People of Medusalin and our honoured guests" she began still slightly out of breath. "It is that time of year where we as a nation remember our ancestors and the tribulations that they went through. We remember those who were once imprisoned on this island because of fear and a lack of knowledge and pledge ourselves to never succumb to the same. We give thanks for the wise people who discovered a cure for the afflicted and give thanks for all doctors working today. We give thanks to those from far away who, for whatever reason, aided those on the island. We thank the Gods for giving us our freedom and we thank the Gods for allowing us to survive the hardships mankind inflicted on the island. Today we have a fresh start and we must all make the most of that. I today have made the most of it by inviting new friends to our day and I hope they will now join me in washing away the ills of the past." Rather unceremoniously a naval rating passed her a broom and several large bottles of pre-mixed solution were brought up. With a cheer the navy, with some help from the willing guests began pouring the solution of vinegar and water into the stone box. Elisabeth, Theo and Constance had brooms and stood on the edges of the little rock were scrubbing away at the outside the waves gently lapping up to their knees. Brooms were brought forward for the guests if they wanted to try it and once the box was full they began scrubbing the insides. In days of old it was believed this would kill the infection and make items safe for the uninfected to handle when they left supplies for those doomed to die on the island. Theo nearly slipped a time or two having opted to stand behind his mother unsure of her footing after she'd recovered from the illness she'd had. Now the box had been scrubbed and the liquid was ready to be drained.

Theo now addressed the crowd. "As we release the filth of the last year from the box let us all pray that the Gods will do the same for us." With that he used a hammer to break a seal at the bottom of the box on each side, soon the level of the liquid was decreasing a before long the box was as empty as it could be." Now the two girls in white dresses stepped forward and were helped clamber into the box itself there they stood, arms outstretched and silently mouthed a prayer or two before taking a knife from their belt and trimming their long blonde hair short leaving the hair in the box. "They're priestesses who have graduated today from the College of the Three, virgins too," he added but immediately felt awkward having added that cultural gem, "All priestesses cut their hair once they graduate, male priests must not shave from when they enter the College but once they graduate they must shave off their beard." He had no idea why women had been selected to be the ones to carry out this ceremony and figured he should probably find out." The two girls hair now shoddily chopped short they left the golden strands in the box, payment to the Gods, and then clambered back into the boats rather damper than previously. Once secure in the boat there were gifts left by each of the royals, small tokens, nothing more than coins or in Elisabeth's case a small silver ring. Then new seals were put in place and the trio of VIP boats made there way back towards shore but not fully. Now the royals were clear several smaller boats emerged from the packs of gathered yachts and sailing boats as some wished to leave gifts of their own for the bank. More music could be heard now, but rather than a naval tune this was music you'd be more likely to hear in a trendy modern nightclub. The boats returned to the castle where a series of butlers were waiting with towels and glasses of steaming blackcurrent cordial, the Queens favourite warmer up after a trip to sea.

"We have a few minutes before we begin our real celebration, and of course fish and chips" Elisabeth announced, "Anyone wishing to get out of their new uniform is more than welcome." Theo began handing out the towels and checking on everyone, especially the guest from Neu Urburzis called Saskia. She may have said her "Old bones" were up for it but now back on dry land he just wanted to check. "Can we get you anything?" He asked her as he offered a towel.

Crown Prince Theodor had been warned to expect the Morelanders first. They may be practically neighbours but Theodor had never been to East Moreland and seeing plane after plane land it made him think of how much of Mundus he had yet to explore. As he poured the first of what was to become several coffees he spoke to the King of East Moreland. "My mothers doing very well thanks. I think she's more excited about today than anyone." He picked up the serving jug with cream in and offered it towards Stasya's cup and poured slowly until she indicated that there was sufficient. "As for your library I'd be more than happy to help you fill it." He handed the pair their saucers and cups.

As the delgeation from Achkaerin arrived Theodor was surprised to see Peter here. "We're honoured you've managed to attend." He said addressing what he assumed was the former Emperor. "I know mother will be as delighted to see you overcoming your illness as she was with her own victory. I hope you're feeling well." He extended a hand before handing over more cups and saucers. Having ensured they'd been free to mingle with the Morelanders it was the turn of someone he knew well.

Theodor had been rather formal with the Morelander King and Achkaerin Empress however now it was time to greet a friend. He enjoyed the warm embrace of Crown Princess Charlotte and spoke as they let go of each other. "I'm glad he's let you come. I've missed you." He didn't ask how she wanted her coffee, he'd seen her drink it that often he just simply made it. "I hope you'll be staying a few days. We need a catch up." He then watched her head off and say hello to the others.

The arrival of a "Death Cult" was rather an odd choice to send to a festival that was in a way celebrating the victory of life over a disease. Theodor was a little taken aback by the theatrics and was a little at a loss of how to react. "T..t...thank you for the kind gift" he stammered still mentally trying to work out exactly how he should respond. He began making her a coffee while he tried to figure out exactly what was in the boxes, it took him a moment but at least the gift was fitting for a celebratory festival. "I'm sure the wine will be a welcome addition to today but there was no need." He said as he handed the beverage across "Just having guests from across Mundus is all we needed but I hope you enjoy your time here and your Imperial Family are invited any time they wish." He was relieved the strange old woman made her way towards the Achkaerin delegeation and so he could turn to the next arrival.

Thankfully the arrival of Empress of Rokkenjima was more routine. He thanked her for attending and ensured she and McKenna were well equipped with china cups of coffee on pretty saucers. Finally it was the turn of Emperor Eijiro and his entourage. "Its an honour to meet you Empress" he bowed slightly to Mayumi before smartly sahking the Aide/Valets hand. "Mother is doing well, I think being on the sidelines have made her bored and she is looking forward to today basically being a come back tour." Everyone was now ready to go and with a toot of a whistle followed seconds later by the sounding of the ships horn sent the ship into a frenzy of activity. While the group sat and socialised on what was effectively the flagships landing pad  Admiral Johannes Heim returned with a group of seaman carrying chairs.

"Your Majesties, Highnesses and honoured guests" The Admiral began. "It was take us about half an hour to get going and get to the Throne Castle. You are of course more than welcome to sit and enjoy the morning sunshine with His Highness Prince Theodor or if anyone has a mind I can show you around the Bayer." Those wishing for the tour left with the Admiral pleased that he had a chance to show of his boat. It was not as grand as the flagships each of those nations here had but he was proud at how well run his corvette was. They went into the bridge and from there the galley where chefs were busy preparing various dishes for the day. Then down to engine rooms, across to the maintainence hanger and then back up to the front of the ship where three great big buckets, big enough to put a man inside were being filled with a combination of sea water, vinegar and food dye. "The crew will be needing those later" he did not explain but knowing the ship was now close to the Palace returned to the landing pad. There Theodor had been given people a quick run down of what to expect.

"The day began being celebrated as a festival in the 1700's. As trading had become more effective and while not yet fully understood the dangers of lepresey had declined the day stopped being one that was needed to one that was a celebration of another year of defeating death." He looked nervously at Saskia then continued. "Luckily for us our good friends from Valen had been our most reliable supply of food and goods during those years the disease stalked out island and we basically became a dumping ground, mainly for Alba Karinya. The traders of Valen had one condition to trading with us, that once a year on this date the vinegar boxes be given a "damn good clean" according to a verbal agreement between King Robert IV and a Valen trader.....who may have been more like a pirate." he shrugged his shoulders. "So every year the people would rather than just put tiny amounts of vinegar into the boxes and leave coins in it they would take vats of vinegar, fill them to the brim and using salt and heavy duty brooms give them a good scrub. They would then leave them filled with a mixture of vinegar and cloth dye in the hope it would show they'd done the deep clean. Today thats kind of re-enacted." Theodor explained.

"And now we must be busy" a voice called from behind, it was Queen Elisabeth IV being accompanied by Princess Constance. Both were dressed not exactly for a day of meeting VIPs from across Mundus. Both wore what looked like a military flying suit in grey with their names sewn on the breast pocket flap. "I hope my son has explained that today can get a little messy. For those who want to get a little , how shall I say, hands on we have overalls for you, those who just wish to observe then that's fine too. Anyone wishing to change we have rooms in the Palace" the Queen went around and introduced herself to everyone as they made their way to the Palace down the walkway. "The tide is nearly perfect" The Queen said excitedly as those wishing to change re-appeared in their grey all in one with their names tagged. Theodor had himself got changed and now lead the way down towards a fleet of small rowing boats. "Anyone who is feeling energised after coffee may wish to take an oar. Anyone not in overalls I suggest you take the trip in the motor boat." A pair of large wooden boats capable of around ten people sitting either side of a fixed table. "Everyone set?" She asked before taking to the rudder of one of the rowing boats.

Sitting some 200 meters off the coast of the city of Haven is Throne Castle a small fort that sits a short row boat ride from a huge stone container built on a sandbank. The "Royal Vinegar Bank" is the largest in the Kingdom and back at a time when the nation was a Leper colony served as one of hundreds, if not thousands, of drop boxes around the coast. Today it would be the final one to receive its annual clean but first there was the need to welcome the first foreign guests to the festival since perhaps the boxes had served their initial purpose. The journey would be rather straight forward, aircraft could land at Haven International Airport, it ran parallel to the coast some kilometers outside the capital on the Eastern coast of the island. The coast was so close by that a small terminal had been built in the 1980's to allow pre-approved visitors such as those expected today, to leave the airport by boat. Today the FGS Bayer, the small nations flagship sat at the end of a short pier waiting the guests arrival. Back on the island castle Queen Elisabeth sat on the roof terrace peering at the Bayer through her telescope as a variety of boats began gathering around the Isle, various nobles and well to do citizens keen to take part in the royal celebrations. Further down the coast you could see other small boats amassing, the cities own floatilla where each small group of boats would be assigned a handful of the old ancient dropboxes to clean. The fient hum of music already reached the Palace.

Onboard the Bayer, Crown Prince Theodor sat on the small rear deck where the entry ramp was located. He was dressed in a smart white linen suit and sat with Admiral Johannes Heim, the ships captain, enjoying a freshly brewed coffee. A square table had been set up to allow the guests to have refreshments before making their way over to the Throne Castle to meet his mother. The young man was releaved his mother was over her recent illness and now, for what he hoped was a long time, he bore no real responsibilities. Infact he was now at a loss of what he would do with his time. He had considered rejoining the military or going to University but neither of those were really what he dreamed of. He'd served 18 months in the Navy as he felt he had to and he was bright but not an academic. For now he was content to just relax a bit after having been regent for around a year. He sipped his coffee happy to be in the company of the Admiral as they looked forward to what was a day of fun and celebration. A small radio sat on the table as the Admiral listened to the Air Traffic Control tower and his own ship chatting back and forth about various movements. It transpired the first aircraft was incoming. From the ship Theodor watched it land and come to a halt, he could see in the distance figures in the white uniform of the Navy greet the guests however the sound of the airport drowned out the band playing the national anthems. He tried to imagine the Minister of Foreign Affairs making small talk as he showed the guest to a waiting car, the trip may only be a few hundred meters but it wasn't the polite thing to do to make your guest hike off an airfield. The Admiral peered through binoculars and confirmed the identity of the guests long before the car arrived at the foot of the ramp. The ever efficient Admiral had already had his men smarten the table up, lose the radio and get the guard detail out. The Prince positioned himself at the top and the guards hurriedly made an honour guard. The Admiral waited by the car door for a young seaman to open up and then snapped a salute to the guest. "Welcome to Medusalin. If you follow me I'd be honoured" He turned and smartly walked up the walkway until they reached the top where he introduced the Prince to the arrival.

"Its wonderful to meet you. My mother is so excited you have agreed to come celebrate with us." He extended a polite hand, "For now we must wait for a few others, hopefully you'll know some of them. Then the Admiral here will ferry us over to the castle there and we can begin the real purpose of the day. Can I offer you coffee?" The Prince picked up the still steaming pot and set up a pretty white tea cup on a saucer with a pretty pale blue edge ringed in gold.

NEW VAPING LAWS TO COME INTO EFFECT NEXT MONTH

Queen Elisabeth IV has today passed the "Vaping Control Act" recommended by the National Assembly. The new act will bring into force various laws designed to halt what has been described as a "Vape Epidemic" within the Kingdom. A recent survey suggested that around 20% of all Medusians aged between 11-18 had tried vaping with 15.5% of people aged between 14-23 describing themselves as either "daily" or "regular" vapers. The Minister of Health, Dr.Madeline Janger, stated "While the numbers in themselves are disturbing the recent research carried out by the Ministry and various other agencies is frightening. We found that not only were the numbers of vapers increasing we also found the amount people vaped also increased. Studies by our labs also found that the average strength of vaping products had also increased as too had the use of what could best be described as sub-standard and dangerous products. We have also sadly seen companies actively target children with these products. Companies are producing liquid capsules that resemble the packaging of children's favourite sweet products and boast flavours such as "Tutti Frutti", "Tangy Pineapple" and the most popular one "Mango Magic", we've also found that designs of so called "Throw Away" vapes include those looking like USB sticks and even highlighters, thus allowing children to secretly take them to school. So far we've seen around 1000 children this year face some form of punishment by schools for taking vapes into school and using them." The Minister said that current rules preventing the sale of tobacco products to those under 18 had been inadequte in the face of an "ever changing landscape of vaping."

The new laws will make the minimum age for buying any tobacco product 21 and that a valid ID must be presented regardless of the appearance of the buyer. Any outlet found to not be doing this will face a 1000 Farthing ($1000) fine in the first instance with each future offence seeing the fine doubled. Other rules include that all vapes must be sold in plain white packaging which may only contain black text bearing the name of the product, its size and company information, in addition all boxes must include on their outside a health warning. The vapes themselves must be recyclable either by being placed in national recycling scheme bins or through a product return scheme. All vapes must also be of a minimum physical size and either black, grey or white. There will also be a limit placed on the strength of liquids used inside vapes. Finally the sale of vapes by post will not be permitted. The new legislation was largely drawn up by Yuri Thomassa of the Island Unity Party and upon hearing of the Queen's signature, just twelve hours after being presented the proposal, said "It is our hope these new measures will make the product seem less attractive to young people and harder to get hold of by children. We do not wish to totally ban vaping but it was considered. I believe use of products like vaping can offer those struggling to quit regular smoking a useful tool but I think a line has been crossed and now we must ensure that our nation does not allow our children to cause lasting damage to their still growing bodies."

Mr. Mika Holbe is the CEO of National Tobacco Alliance, a consortium of businesses that produce various tobacco related products. "Today we are concerned that we are being targetted unfairly. We have worked within the laws of the land to produce a product that is scientifically proven to be less harmful to the consumer than cigarettes. We have complied with all laws about advertising, supply and safety. The market is saturated by illegally produced products often sold under the counter and todays laws make it more likely that young people will seek these out rather than products made by responsible manufacturers like ourselves. We are proud that our vaping products have helped thousands, if not millions, give up the more harmful cigarettes and our research shows that many of these people later even give up vaping. People though should be free to make decisions about their own consumption. We believe alcohol is very much more harmful that tobacco and we see no laws restricting their trade."

The new laws come into force on the 1st November 2023 and police and judges have been told that after that date their is to be no "Honeymoon Period" in terms of enforcing the laws.

To His Majesty King David III of East Moreland (OOC-If anyone else wishes to attend they may assume a similar letter was sent to them)

I read with some interest that you have a keen interest in history and have several times shown a desire to witness traditional cultural events in person. With this being the case I would like to extend to you an invitation to an annual event here in my nation known as the "Cleaning of the Banks Ritual". Each year in in September we undertake a ceremony where the old stone boxes used as a form of commerce drop box in the time we were a leper colony are cleaned and thanks given for our nations survival during those difficult times. The ritual involves nobles taking responsibility for ensuring the maintainence of these boxes on points around our coast and a ritualistic cleaning of them. Following this communities come together and enjoy a traditional fish supper together while celebrating the day.

If you would like to visit I would be honored if you would join my family aboard the nations flagship FGS Bayer as we journey to three large Vinegar Banks outside the capital of Haven.

I am hopeful that you accept this request.

With Deepest Respects

Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth IV

If possible could the mainland bit of R12 be labelled Valen and the island Medusalin. We're sharing a territory. If one of us leaves the whole territory should go to the other. If thats OK?

Medusalin Defence Force

The Medusalin Defence Force (MDF) was formed in its current guise in 1933. Previously the military had been split into four defence forces, North, East, South and West, with each being managed by a Duke. These had fallen under the command of a central administration in 1827 but remained as four separate forces almost militia like in design. There was no central training programme or procurement.

Today the military is open to any individual who has lived in Medusalin for five years. Any foreign born individual who has resided on the island for five years and then serves two years in the military is given citizenship. The military is all volunteer however upon reaching your 18th birthday every citizen is issued a green ID, this is an official ID Card that must be carried in public (at age 12 all citizens are issued a blue ID). On the Green ID is a six digit number and two letters which can be used in the event of a draft in wartime. Until 1999 men could only be drafted into the military while women could be drafted into "other" work. Now however full gender equality exists and "other" work is only an option to people considered not "Grade 1" in terms of fitness or education.

The MDF is split into four branches

Land Service: 15,000 Soldiers
Naval Service: 2,000 sailors
Air Service: 2,500 airmen
Coast Guard: 1,000  staff

Stock of Equipment

20 Light Tanks

CULTURE AND TRADITIONS

Language

The main language spoken on the island is Medusalin. Its a language that has roots similar to Morelandish but has a large variety of words that can be seen as coming from other languages. There are two dialects of Medusalin spoken, High Medusalin is a more complex language that was traditionally spoken by the nobility meanwhile Low Medusalin was used by everyone else on the island. Today the vast majority of daily communication is done in Low Medusalin with the High dialect being reserved for formal state occasions or use in mediums such as poetry. The majority of the public could understand both dialects however may find themselves having to utilise a dictionary at times.

Art

The art of Medusalin is heavily influenced by the Gorgonsism religion. The three Gorgons are often depicted in art, often with snakes for hair. Other common motifs include the Triform, the symbol of the Gorgonsism religion. Art is also used to tell stories and histories. Many paintings and sculptures depict important events in the history of Medusalin, such as the founding of the kingdom or the suffering of people during the time of the island largely being a leper colony. As a result it is often said that Medusalin art tends to be rather dark and sad. Many artists have used their work to explore themes of love, loss, and the harsh conditions of the islands past. The art of Medusalin has also occasionally mirrored that of regions who utilised the island as a leper colony. Art historians can see changes in styles based on whether there was an influx of newcomers from a particular nation or region.

Music

The island lacked large scale performance venues until relatively recently. As communities were mainly small and many lacked any form of musical education. Occasionally either missionaries or infected musicians would arrive and there would have been a brief emergence of musical development. What music that was historically present tended to be individualistic and utilised things such as lutes and later guitars. While many nations have a rich folk music heritage this is lacking on Medusalin as often it was unable to passed from person to person.

Since the nation became more stable in a post-leprosy world music has been influenced by the folk traditions of places like East Moreland and other nations situated on the Mhorish. Since the 1800's nobles in particular saw the encouragement of musical entertainment as an easy way to gain prestige and influence with the general public by hosting musical events.

The Tolbruck Hall, a music venue constructed in 1877 with support of the Bayer Family who are now the current Royal Family. It is typical of how families have tried to contribute to supporting the arts and in particular music. The Tolbruck Hall hosts concerts every Friday after Temple service with every second Friday of the month featuring a free concert organised by the Bayer Family Trust which distributes tickets through local schools. On other days of the week the hall, with a capacity for 2,500 people, is available for booking by other event organisers.

Food

With the island being formed through various volcanic activities it has created a series of relatively fertile areas of the island. The volcanic ash that has settled over millenia has seen its nutrients washed into the soil by rainfall and then its acidity diluted making the island great for growing a large variety of fruit and vegetables. One of the problems historically though was that until the arrival of slavery only small scale gardens existed and large scale agriculture meant people relied more on charitable supplies sent with new arrivals or scavenging from nature. There was a wide variety of seafood eaten and historical evidence of early attempts at fish farms and trap fishing seem to have taken place.

One of the most popular dishes on the island is Seafood Stew, this dish is a hearty stew made with seafood, vegetables, and spices. The seafood is typically octopus and two types of fish, and the vegetables are typically tomatoes, onions, and peppers. The spices are typically garlic, ginger, and chili peppers. The stew is cooked slowly over a low heat until the flavors are fully developed. Other favourites include Crab Soup. This soup is made with crab meat, potatoes, onions, and spices. The crab meat is typically cooked in a broth made from the crab shells. The potatoes and onions are typically cooked separately and then added to the soup. The spices are typically salt, pepper, and bay leaves. The soup is typically served hot.

Festivals

During the period of the Isle's history where it was still experiencing leprosy there were no real mass festivals that were not focused on religion. Since then though there have begun to be a wide variety of annual events that take place across the island, some where the whole islands population celebrate but others connected to just individual villages. Some of the major ones are included below.

April 27 - Nationwide celebration of "Freedom Day" - This is not actually commemorating freedom in the traditional sense. On this date in 1873 a scientist discovered the true cause of leprosy and as a result much of the stigma and concern about the disease and also the island of Medusalin began to ease. On this date wreaths are laid on the memorial stones near the coast that mark places where the ashes of the deceased have been put into the sea. It is also a day where doctors and nurses are often given gifts by the local community.

June 20th - The Dorme Mile - Set up in 1977 the Dorme Mile is considered one of the nations premier sporting events and is often considered the most challenging running race in the nation. Despite its actual name the race does not cover a mile and has no set distance. A one mile circular course around the forest just outside Dorme is marked. The course contains a significant amount of up and down hill running. Those entering the race have 16 minutes to complete the circuit, anyone failing to do so for any reason is withdrawn from the race which continues until only one person remains.

October 15th - Start of Crab Season - While crab can be found all year round the best time of year for crab fishing is October to January. To mark this occasion crab fisherman ranging from those who hunt in rock pools to professional fleets try to foster good luck for the year ahead. This means most coastal settlements experience festivals and parades. Competitions take place to make the best crab themed float and prizes are given. Competitions are held for the best Crab soup and priests go round blessing crab traps and boats. In the days leading up to the festival crews will often paint their boats ready for the year ahead. The first crab of the year someone catches traditionally has a red Triform painted on its back and is released, should it be recaptured, even by another fisherman it is supposed to be bad luck not to release it.

4th September - The Cleaning of the Banks Ritual - During the time of the island being a leper colony there was the tradition of communities not on the island, merchants and even pirates trading with the people of Medusalin. To enable this a series of large stone boxes were established around the coast. These had a small pluggable hole in the bottom. They would be filled with vinegar and salt water and precious items left in them by the islanders. When traders arrived they would pull the plug and allow the liquid to drain before taking the items which were considered disease free. They would then replace the plug and leave the items traded for in the box which would then be taken away by the islanders. As such it was possible to have contact free deliveries. Since they have fallen out of use they have become historic landmarks and there are attempts to maintain them as an important national heritage monument. On the 4th September groups will gather to clean the stone boxes and repair any if needed. They are ceremonially flushed out and then the community tend to eat a traditional meal of fish and chips with a liberal application of salt and vinegar.

QUEEN RECOVERS FROM ILLNESS. RETURN TO WORK "IMMINENT"

Last summer Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth IV was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a medical condition where the bodies own immune system turns against itself. The condition while serious is treatable however patients usually are under the care of doctors for around a year. Today the Bayer Families official spokesman, Pierre Littheim, announced that the Queen has been officially cleared by her doctors and is keen to return to her work of running the nation. The condition saw the Queen in and out of hospital to receive treatment and at times she required a feeding tube. During this time the Kingdom was being run by Crown Prince Theodor with support from his father Duke Miks Hummelberg and his sister Princess Constance. The 23 year old Prince will on Monday however hand full control of the nation back to his mother. The Crown-Prince confirmed this while visiting the Throne Castle where his mother has currently been convalescing. His Highness spoke briefly with press stating clearly "My mother is someone who is committed to hard work. She has been climbing the walls the past few months waiting for her condition to reach a point where she can undertake all her duties with the passion and energy she has always given us. I've had a small taste of what she does on a day to day basis and while I know sadly I'll have to do so again I will be offering prayers at Temple tomorrow it is not for a very long time. I've made mistakes this past year or so and despite my father and sisters advice have not made the most of opportunities presented to the Kingdom. I will sit down and discuss such things with mother and I am confident she will educate me in my failings and ensure I, and more importantly, the Kingdom emerge stronger."

A short written statement has been released by the Queen stating "I thank the people of Medusalin for their patience and their love. It is ironic that an island with a history such as ours hasn't coped better with one person being ill. This was a situation we have never truly faced in the modern era and we can, like always, learn from the lessons of the past. I now can't wait to get back to doing what I love, representing the people of our island. I hope to see you all soon."

Doctors say that while there is no cure for Guillain-Barré syndrome the vast majority of patients with the condition have one major episode in their lifetime and that the condition can be managed with little to no impact on a persons life. The Queens blood will be tested regularly, most patients with the syndrome are tested twice a year and levels of white blood cells monitored to ensure they are within safe levels. Experts say only 1 in 8 patients ever experience another attack and in those case it is usually less severe. The condition is not genetic so there is no risk of the Queen's children being infected. One leading doctor stated, "Our island need not worry that we will see other cases. This is the first case I've ever seen in my career and statistically it should be the last. Her Majesty has sadly been very unlucky but she has had wonderful care by the best professionals we have here. I think we've a great number of years left to celebrate her reign."

Dr. Hans Marliebe, Voice of the Gorgons for the Central Island District, is one of three leading religious figures for the Gorgonist faith and has urged Temples to mark the news across the nation tomorrow. "In the beginnings of our history of an island our people feared any illness, it was a death sentence and life here was short. Thanks to the skill, dedication and courage of medical professionals seeking out wisdom from the Gorgons we can today ensure thats not the case. In the past they called our homeland the Isle of Doom. Today we have had excellent news that our land have conquered another disease. Lets rejoice, give thanks and enjoy our weekly worship as we celebrate that our Keeper of the Triform, Queen Elisabeth, returns to us ready to once more guide us on the path to a better world." Some Temples have already announced that their weekly collection of donations of foods and money will be donated to good causes connected to medical care as a way of giving thanks.

The Queen has yet to announce what her first royal duty will be on her return however Princess Constance has confirmed her final duty as a kind of "caretaker" of the nation will be to officially re-open schools after their summer break. The 19 year old Princess will for the first time in her life not be attending a school having graduated in the summer. Traditionally the College of the Three opens the first Friday in September for new students training to be Priests and no other school in the Kingdom is supposed to begin classes until this has been opened. Princess Constance will give a speech welcoming new students and present each with a traditional quill and ink well as she welcomes the class of 122 to the College. The Princess has yet to confirm what she will be doing now she has completed compulsory education. Traditionally royal women have completed a period of service within a caring profession while males complete military service, normally within the Guards Regiment. Crown Prince Theodor has confirmed he will return to the regiment in the new year once his mother is fully returned.

GORGONISM

The majority faith of the island is known as Gorgonism. It is thought to be a relatively young religion with its first recorded mention coming at some point in the first century AD. There is however clear indications that the faith merged existing folk religions with mythology created around the idea of the island becoming an island for those cursed with leprosy

Introduction

The faith is one that could be described as polytheistic as the faith worships three Gods but also has the belief that there is a world of spiritual power beyond human comprehension and that this is communicable. The faith is largely confined to the Kingdom of Meudsalin however this is to be expected as many nations of the world refused visitors from Medusalin until more was known about Leprosy. This isolation due to health reasons has also largely meant that there were very little in the way of long term missionaries as they either died and had no consistent long term missionary work or post becoming a Kingdom the faith was used as a way of the monarch controlling the people in some manners and as a result dissenting religious views were at times outlawed but almost always shunned.

Creation Story

In the beginning of time there was just black chaos however swirling in this chaos were the energies of spiritual beings. Over a long period of time three of these beings absorbed the others, took physical form and emerged from the swirling chaos. Once free from this the three sisters, known as the Gorgons named Medusa, Stheno, and Euryale wished to live in a well ordered and structured world and set about creating what we today call the Universe. They were able to literally look into what was left of the swirling chaos now the other spiritual beings had been removed and conjure anything they wished. Initially beautiful and loving the three Gorgons became slightly more twisted and malformed with each act of power they performed, sacrificing their perfection to create the Universe we live in. Eventually their need to keep the living world ordered and balanced caused them to go insane. Texts say that the strongest of the Gorgons, Medusa, even began to be so resentful of losing her beauty and sanity that rather than using her gaze to conjure life she used it to turn people to stone.

Eventually realising that by keeping the world perfect they would be destroyed, and thus bring about the destruction of all creation the three sisters determined that they would hide themselves away until such a time as humanity had created a perfectly ordered world which would restore the Gorgons to their former power.

Holy Texts

The followers of the faith utilise two sacred texts. The Book of Chaos is the stories of the Gorgons creating the Universe and their rules for maintaining order. The Book of Stone is a series of warnings of what awaits if we do not create order in the world. There is the belief that the Book of Chaos was written by Euryale while the Book of Stone was written by Medusa. Both books are relatively short compared to many sacred texts, for example an average KJV Bible contains 1,200 pages both the Book of Chaos and the Book of Stone contain less than 200 pages in total with the Book of Chaos being around 120 of these. There are many examples of adherents of the faith that have actually memorised the whole of both books.

Symbols and Icons

The Triform is the officially recognised symbol of the faith. It features a circle with three female symbols coming off of it. The circle is said to symbolise the chaos while the female symbols represent the three Gorgons who emerged from the chaos. The symbol is traditionally always red to represent the sacrifices made by the three to allow mankind to exist.

Other symbols used often include images of the three Gorgons often shown with snakes as hair.

Rituals and Practices

It is expected that every Friday the faithful gather at a Temple to pray and conduct sacred ceremonies.

Every Friday the faithful with gather inside a circle. There they shall ritualistically wash using salt water and vinegar (thought to be a connection to the times of leprosy). Once pure the faithful make three offerings, food, drink and wealth, to the Gorgons. At this point they begin praying for a world of peace, order and discipline. A priest then gives advice on how the Gorgons can be restored and then the community shares food together.

Weddings within the faith can only take place with the approval of three priests. Once a wedding has been approved the couple pick a temple and arrange the ceremony. The ceremony sees the symbol of the faith drawn on the temple floor by the couple. Once the symbol has been drawn the guests can enter and sit in a circle around the symbol. The bride and groom then ritually wash the feet of their partners parents (if the parents are dead or otherwise unable to attend then that person nominates a stand in). Once this has been done the priest has two lengths of rope, one red the other white. The priest begins by joining the ropes with a reef knot. The couple then take it in turns taking oaths to each other. While there are traditional oaths a couple may take any oaths they wish so long as their are six in total. With each oath the rope is twisted around itself so by the time all six are done a kind of braid has been made. The priest then asks the couple a final time whether they wish to marry and if they both say yes he completed the braid by tying another reef knot. The length of now braided rope is handed to the bride who wears it as belt. The ceremony then finishes with the parents whose feet were washed at the beginning washing the feet of their new family member.

When a child is born it is expected to be taken to Temple on the forth Friday after its birth. Here it is given its first ceremonial wash by a Priest and given a name by the Priest based on omens, traditions and any other factor. This name is then written down on a piece of cloth which is kept by the family who will add a name of their own choosing. As such each child has two names. Usually after the ceremony it is tradition the family host a party to celebrate the birth.

When a person reaches the age of 12 a coming of age ceremony takes place. The cloth they were given at birth is brought to the Temple and at the end of that weeks service the child is asked to pick which of the two names on the cloth they wish to carry for the rest of their lives. The cloth is then cut, the one with the name they rejected is burnt while the one they choose to keep is soaked in vinegar and salt water to purify it before being tied to a tree outside the temple.

When a person dies they are expected to whenever possible have a funeral before the next sunset. This practice is thought largely to have begun as a way of controlling disease. The family gather wood and various other fuels and on a rocky outcrop next to the sea the body is burnt as Priests say prayers for the persons soul to find its path to return to the swirling chaos. Once the funeral pyre is out the ashes are collected, mixed with vinegar and salt water and poured into the sea. If possible the scrap of cloth with the persons name on it is buried in the Temple's garden as a way of ensuring that a persons journey to the afterlife has a definite start and end point so the soul can not get lost.

Leaders

The religion utilises a system a little like an army in terms of organisation. There is a clear chain of authority. At the top is the monarch who as well as having the title King or Queen also holds the title Keeper of the Triform. In this role they are the ultimate authority on matters of religious doctrine. They are also responsible for overseeing the "College of the Three" which is where all priests within the faith train.

Priests may be male or female and no distinction is made between their roles. Once graduation from the College takes place a person becomes a Guardian of the Dead for 12 months. It is their responsibility to ensure those who have died over the previous 12 months are memorialised and remembered. On the completion of this year they become a fully fledged Priest and the faith assign them to a Temple. Usually they serve in a role supporting a more experienced priest for the next five years. After this they are often dispatched to less populated areas which may require them travelling to tend to the spiritual needs. After at least seven years in the faith a person may apply for any of the vacant positions of "Speaker for the Gorgons" these are Priests who in many ways could be considered managers of Temples. After completing this task for at least two years a Priest may apply for a vacancy as a "Bringer of Order" which is responsible for the oversight of several Temples. Finally there are three "Voice of the Gorgons" who act as chief advisers to the monarch on spiritual matters. All promotions to Voice of the Gorgons are made by the monarch.

THE ROYAL FAMILY

Bayer Family Coat of Arms

The Bayer Family assumed the throne in 1904 two years after the conclusion of the nations brief civil war. The Bayer family had been a leading supporter of the royalists and in 1903 Crown Princess Helena married the eldest son of Duke Theo Bayer. A year later the crown passed to Helena and as such the Bayer's became the legitimate royal family.

The family, like all of the royals since the 1700's, have maintained almost total control over the nation. The royal family technically own all land on the island, appoint all judges, commission all military officers and all public servants swear an oath of loyalty to the crown. The family also technically own all mines and ports on the island. There are however systems that have seen these used in other ways, for example when buying a house the buyer pays something called "Land Duty" which is a price on top of the house price that gives the new home owner the land the house is built on, with certain conditions, for 999 years.

The current monarch is Queen Elisabeth IV who inherited the throne in 2018.

The royals seat of power is actually in a castle built in the 1400's to watch over a major "Vinegar Bank". The castle is known as the Throne Castle and is actually attached to the islands mainland by a tiday causeway. It lacks a lot of room and as such is not used for much day to day government work. It features only three bedrooms for royal use along with a small guards barracks and several other rooms. There are rumours that the castle actually has secret tunnels that run back to the islands mainland to a secret underground Palace but these are unconfirmed.

The day to day the family reside in the capital of Haven at the Port Palace which was constructed in the mid 1800's and as well as functional office space for administering the country it also includes the Royal Families accommodation.

THE KINGDOM OF MEDUSALIN

The Kingdom of Medusalin has throughout its history been known by several names ranging from, the Isle of Doom to Isle of Outcasts. The island began as an area used seasonally for fishing from the Alba Karinya mainland, mainly as it was plagued by volcanic activity which has been largely dormant since the 2nd Century AD when the last eruption is thought to have occured. At some point in the early 3rd Century AD a stone building was constructed on the northern shore with an inscription stating "This is the house of death. All who enter may never leave save to their Gods" It is clear from historical record however that this island had already begun to be used for a dumping ground of a mixture of people thought to be highly infectious in terms of disease, most likely leprosy, and criminals. There are records indicating that some criminals were tricked into believing that they were earning the right to freedom back by acting as nurse-maids or workers on the island and that the Gods would forgive them inf they did this work. There are however no historical records of anyone ever leaving the island.

By the middle of the 6th Century AD several settlements had been established across the island, some known as "clean" where workers were based to carry out work such as agriculture, fisheries and mining, other settlements were known as "unpure" and were largely walled cities with gatehouses preventing anyone entering or leaving without permission. While the illness spread in many occasions to the worker class the island did manage to become wealthy. A series of large stone boxes were erected on rocky outcrops known as "Vinegar Banks" these were boxes were large amounts of gold, silver, diamonds and various other precious items mined on the island could be deposited soaked in vinegar, a measure believed to prevent the spread of illness. Traders and pirates would leave goods, food and even at some points slaves and take the goods. As a result the island became rather diverse however the vast majority of those on the island would be described in the historical record as "pale of skin, golden of hair", a belief that came from the idea that the Gods were described as being "Golden" and that such people could be their semi-human offspring and thus immune from the disease.

In the early 13th Century one of the people left on the island was a young 17 year old Knight by the name of Franz Gottschalk was sent to the island. The thought of never being able to leave and some of the immorality he saw happening there lead him to leave the "unpure" settlement he had been put into by sneaking out and killing two guards. He established his own settlement and by the time he was 23 he had taken command of a rabble known historically as the "Masses of the Grave". A combination of their lack of fear of death, fear of their illness and Franz's connections meant he had taken control of the island by 1278. He made himself King and in 1279 an agreement was made with nations across the region that "King Franz the Cursed" would accept all criminals and ill in return for annual gifts and slaves. Franz's right to be King was seemingly supported by the Gods as despite the leprosy taking a great toll on his appearance and physical abilities he remained alive until the age of 61. Through a mixture of adoptions, marriages and decrees the island remained a private Kingdom in effect until the mid 1700s.

In the 1700s the island began to experience the occasional slave revolt but these were often harshly put down. Slavery was finally outlawed in 1861.

When knowledge on leprosy improved the island became more open for trade and visiting and for once it was permitted in 1887 to leave the island.

In 1902 there was a brief conflict on the island between the Republicans and Royalists. The Royalists won and have maintained control of the government ever since.

Today the island of Medusalin still can be seen as a divided island. Parts of the island are still established as a place for primary industries that at one time made the island capable of supporting those with illness. The other side of the island has become modern settlements. The island is still dominated by the royal family and its strong control over everyday life.

The people of the island follow a faith known as Gorgonism which is heavily influenced by the time of the island being a leper colony.
