Jewel of the Desert 2023
« on: June 25, 2023, 11:20:13 PM »

The Jewel of the Desert Festival was King Heydar's favourite time of year. The entire Soter family decamped from Ipsus and headed into the desert. There around an oasis had been constructed a Palace that sat partly underground and partly like a tent. It was a reminder of the days long consigned to the past when people had roamed the land rather than lived in cities. It was a time that was, at least to Heydar, more romantic to the nations heritage. For a week each year the oasis and sands around it bustled with activity. Hundreds of tented stores had been set up ranging from great marquees to tiny little fabric shacks. Each of them had flags fluttering in the gentle breeze, each store with at least two, one showing the makers mark, the other showing what exactly they sold. Some had just one flag, that of a diamond, other several, a watch, a ring to symbolise jewellry. While the festival organisers did their best to organise the grounds into groups it was never possible, thanks in part to the diversity of the festival and because some people just turned up. Members of the Kings household dressed in pale green robes tied with a golden belt wandered the grounds carrying out checks at random stalls, was their produce legit, were they measuring and weighing correctly and most importantly checking those with the Soter's coat of arms flying. These were merchants who had supplied the royal family in the past and been given a seal of approval. Already today one stall had been flying one when they shouldn't and now its properter was sat in a truck waiting to be driven to a jail in Ipsus.

Next to the stalls selling all manner of jewels and jewellrey, some even custom making commissions for people who had the money, was food stalls, stalls selling rugs, even one with birds of prey sat on little stands outside watching the world walk by. It was in front of this that Prince Aali Akakois was mesmerised.  "Its pretty bird" a young Saker Falcon sat looking back at the young Prince. "Is it that one you like?" his father, King Heydar bent down next to him. He remembered his own father, King Akakois, bringing him to the stalls at a similar age to pick out his first Falconry bird. He had gone for a shaheen falcon, it had been with him 25 years and even now he smiled when he remembered learning the skills with the bird.

"Yes Daddy" the young Prince said turning his head this way and that mimicing the movements of the birds head. Heydar stood and looked at the stall owner who had been standing by.

"We'll take him, also a full set of harness, gloves, hoods, you know all the things. I also want that desert owl." He pointed where in the tent a small owl sat munching on what was probably once a mouse. Heydar liked owls and this particular one had seemed rather inquisitive when they'd explored the tent before Heydar had determined this dealer was acceptable to provide his son with his first bird.

"As Your Majesty requests" The man turned and softly ordered his own son, his assistant to make the birds ready and then turned back to haggle on the price. Clearly the King could afford the animals at the price advertised but that was beside the point, it was rude not to haggle and so the King began at a price that was insanely low, borderline insulting. The merchant made a play of being appalled and even yelled at his son to wait as they might not be selling, the King of course increased his offering and then man lowered his. This back and forth went on until the King threatened to walk away and then the man, as was always going to happen accepted and shook the Kings hand on the deal. Heydar though stopped and knelt to his son, "Aali, the bird is yours because me and the kind man here have done a deal, when men makes deals it does not matter if your a Prince or the poorest man on Mundus, you make a deal you shake hands." he gently took hold of the Princes tiny hand and extended it towards the man and with his eyes indicated that the man should shake the young Princes hand. With a little hesitation he did and the man thanked the Prince for the purchase and wished him a good day. The first deal of the Princes life complete the King was happy.

Over the far side of the grounds Queen Haniyah, the Kings 2nd and youngest wife, sat on a pile of cushions as two young girls ground petals and spices occasionally offering the evolving mixture to her to smell. She was constructing a new perfume and on her knee was two year old Princess Katayun whose face said a thousand words at the smells they tried. Seemingly pleased with the results the Princess smiled and giggled indicating that she was satisfied, or at least that was Haniyahs interpretation. More gentle haggling than with the men and 20 litres of the stuff was ordered.

Hameed Karimi sat on the top of the five row temporary grandstand. It only seated a few hundred people but that was more than enough. As Finance Minister he was expected to be prudent with money but so far his fortunes on the betting was lacking. He watched as his best camel rounded the final bend into the home straight. It was neck and neck with the one in first and perhaps this would be his first win of the Festival. It wasn't to be though as with just thirty meters to go the other jockey opened up a lead and powered through the line. Hameed threw his hands up in despair. It just wasn't his lucky day.

Katerina might have been a Wilhom Queen, a wife of the deceased King Akakois, but she was still active in the family and its diplomacy. With Wilhom Queen Samira now getting on in years she hadn't travelled to the Desert Palace, she didn't handle the heat too well, and meanwhile Akakois 2nd wife, Yanna, had become a political marriage having married Tamoran business magnate and nobleman Thanasis Polakis. That left Katerina as in some ways a matriach of the Soters. It was therefore her turn to man the Palace lounge, a sprawling mass of cushions, low couches and tables with musicians playing merrily away. It would be here that the various VIP's would gather if they wished to pay their respects to the family. Katerina sat chatting with her ten year old son Prince Shahin.

Ramaz Leseridze, Deputy Chairman of Aguri Corporation, arrived accompanied by his assistant Saghazri. The place may feel picturesque, but felt the heat was too annoying to be a fully pleasant experience. The visit may give different fruits later, who knew, but he thought his wife would have enjoyed this much more than him today.

They looked through the stalls, and he found some relief in the fact that even if he stay was not going to be too productive, he would return back to Azavrelia with some bargain, relatively speaking, which may justified this travel.

Saghazri, who spoke the local language and had done some research, explained him carefully some of the customs of the place and about some of the visitors or people they may find. He was not, of course, an expert, but Ramaz was not the person to judge.

"Indeed", Ramaz told Saghazri, "we may find some big fish, after all. Let's hope we will not choke on it".

Jewel of the Desert was probably Melanie Bell's favourite event of the year. Why? Well as the budding, young, globetrotting archaeologist that she was it was a place for her to get to relax a little, although the last time she'd been able to come she'd been handed a Maori shrunken head which she'd returned to the Iwi at the first opportunity. This time around she was perusing various stalls looking at what was there to be found, one of her current interests was in the ancient militaria area and being a Helusian she was perhaps a little biased in that interest. Her mind though was on her current mystery, it seemed quite funny that after being described as a treasure hunter she was finally looking for what was essentially buried treasure. Picking up another book at the stall she was at she raised an eyebrow it was a scholar she wasn't familiar with. "Excuse me." she said looking at the stall holder "Who is the author of this one? It's an interesting one."

Official Achkaerinese representation, if it was to be called that, was provided by Princess Cerys doing her first solo overseas Royal engagement, this was part of Empress Serenity's intentions when it came to events such as this, under her father there had been a concerted effort to spread the load out, but circumstances had tended to thwart that so with the new monarch came a new effort in this respect so here Cerys was and first things first she was going to pay her respects to the hosts which meant making her way, in a somewhat nervous manner, to the Palace lounge she was going through the list of Seleucid Royal's in her head and was thankful that it was one she had some knowledge of that she saw first - the Wilholm Queen Katerina.

"Your Highness." Cerys said smiling "A lovely day and a marvelous festival as always."

Bartek had a small stall selling raw, uncut diamonds but alongside it was a makeshift workshop where he could have his artisans work their magic. His stall might have been a small one compared to many, after all diamonds didn't exactly take up much space. The Soter families coat of arms flew on a flag outside the stall and Bartek was exceptionally proud of that. As Ramaz and Saghazri strolled past Bartek spotted two foreigners. "Hello! Hello!" He approached them, "Welcome to our homeland" he announced "May I help you? I have diamonds, gemstones, precious stones!" He spoke eagerly seeing that the owner of the next stall was already hovering ready to pounce should the two men make it past Bartek.

The owner of the book stall was on the preiphery of the festivals market grounds, people didn't come here looking for books normally, the glitter and glamour of the market was what attracted everyone but antique anything also did a reasonable trade. Unlike the robe clad merchants Balas was dressed in a light linen pair of trousers and white short, his sleeves rolled up casually. As well as selling antique books from across Mundus he also made decorative calligraphic art works for customers and the black ink was splattered slightly on the cuffs and fingers. He picked up a rag and wiped off the latest splurge as Melanie approached. He turned his head to look carefully at the book. The heavily weathered leather bound book had barely any writing on the cover visible. "Just open it please" he asked her and as she did he looked at the worn text inside and smiled, "That is Seleucus Diamantarius, his pen name not a real name of course, his last name literally translates as diamond dealer. He wrote many accounts of matters connected to the diamond trade in the 15th Century however occasionally we find other topics of interest for him. We have others of his if you need them" He asked.

"Please come take a seat" Katerina said gesturing to the large pile of cushions next to her. "We had not been expecting a member of the Achkaerin Imperial Family" Katerina sat stiffly up, "I am though very pleased to see you, sadly the King is somewhere around the Festival, I believe trying to buy some bird of prey so that usually means he comes back with a whole flock, boys and their birds" She shrugged her shoulders. "Can I ask if this is a business trip or merely a shopping one?"

"Thanks", Ramaz Leseridze replied. "You've got an interesting variety. Have you been doing this for a long time, if you don't mind the question?".

"I think I'd go for the easy choice for a start", he told Saghazri, while looking closely one of the mid-sized diamonds of the stand. "I know she bought some rubies last time, so I'd try something more classic this time. I am not an expert but the quality looks quite satisfying". Saghazri did not reply, even if he found this an unlikely place where to buy such luxury products. Of course, he couldn't dream of spending his salary of such objects.

"Do you receive many visits for this festival?", Ramaz asked the man.

"Do most sellers came from the surroundings?", Saghazri asked after translating Leseridze's question.

Diamonds...currency...trade...agreement...mutually beneficial... substitution... the words sounded like a clear bell in Melanie's head, considering her current mystery it was a heck of a coincidence, she half smiled as she looked at the stall holder "I'm not as well versed in the diamond trade as I probably should be, was it something used in place of gold like a currency? Just I'm looking into something that may involve the diamond trade and it would help to understand how it operated." she looked back at the book weighing up the thought that had occurred.

Cerys half smiled as she took the offered seat "in my family it's boys and their books, you should certainly never let my uncle anywhere near a bookshop because chances are you'll then need to also buy a bookshelf to add to the Palace library, it is an impressive collection though." she said "As for why I'm here well it's a bit of both I guess, I'm here doing a little shopping some for myself and some on my brother's behalf. That said if I were to be 'shopping and talking' it's not going to get me into trouble."

OOC- Sorry thought I'd replied to these.

Bartek was not used to so many questions but to ignore them or dismiss them casually would have been seen as rude and that was unacceptable, especially to foreigners. "My family have been in this business for many generations, I suppose you could therefore say I've been in this line of work all my 40 something years. Now he heard the guest describe his produce as "quite satisfying" and hissed some instructions at his son who was acting as his assistant when he returned with a small tray of fresh off the polisher diamonds Bartek addressed his potential customers. "The Festival is not simply about satisfaction, it is about finding something to make you happy and this is my quest, to make you happy" He laid out on the black tray a selection of freshly cut and polished diamonds of varying kinds. "If none of these meet your happiness, forget satsifaction, then we have several uncut diamonds and gems in the back that we can get perfect for your needs or desires. You see we may find ourselves busy with Seleucid shoppers but they have the oppurtunity to come see us repeatedly even in our building in Ipsus, you meanwhile are always welcome there but it is of course quiet the trek. So we want to make sure you get this perfectly the first time. While all the sellers are selling goods from Seleucid mines a few inferior Waddanite ones are beginning to sneak in, but they are not to the same standard as what we find, likewise the Rayyuan appearence this year seems to trade in "grown diamonds", in my view simply an expensive way of saying fake diamonds but everything else is as Seleucid as I am."

Balas chuckled slightly as Melaine's question, from her explanation he had her down now as some sort of scholar or academic but perhaps one new to Seleucid history. "Forgive me" he said before starting to explain what had amused him, "If you walk through this festival you will see people purchasing gold, diamonds, hopefully books even. You will see them accept payment in many forms, now cash or credit card seem to be the way but go back just a century and you will have seen people such as minor land owners exchanging bags of maize or rice for enough gold to make a bracelet for their loved one, next you would see a man swap a few head of cattle for the rough diamond to try and impress his beloved. We were a nation of traders, if you have something I want or need that thing becomes a currency to get something from me that you want or need. Diamonds would have been traded yes, their size, colour, quality and the like determining what you could get with them." He pointed to a tent slightly across from his own, "That is Guzman, one of his diamonds would get you a fine horse perhaps, there though is Ashad, his diamonds tend to be small and dull, the same horse would cost six or seven of his. The diamond trade has not changed much here for centuries, land owners are lucky enough to have lands that you can find diamonds, gold, silver and various other things in, some of those have operated their own mines or in other cases contracted for a trader to come in and in return for letting that trader take the things they dig up they receive a share of the profits. There were, and still are things called Asnafs which regulated the quality of any profession. You wanted the top quality diamonds you went to the Diamond Asnaf, the system of Asnaf's died out in the 19th Century as mechanisation took place but people like Ashad can trace their families line back to a business that was once a member. There old HQ lies in Ipsus and is still a beautiful building, I believe today its a restaurant." He shrugged his shoulders unsure whether he was actually correct."

Meaniwle in the tent Cerys spoke of shopping and talking, to Katerina that seemed like a request. "I am sure we can handle that." She turned and spoke to a man sat close by who had been busying himself with a few pieces of paper and a notebook but now closed them and hurried off. Soon a group of men in suits arrived, Katerina's escort. "Now is there anywhere or anything you'd like to begin with?" She asked as they headed towards the door to the festival itself. As was custom amongst Seleucid ladies of rank Katerina had instinctively wrapped her arm through Cerys as they walked.

"I see." Melanie said smiling as she thought about what she was looking into "I don't want to seem like I'm pushing my luck here or anything but do you happen to have any books from the mid to late nineteenth century? Not necessarily to do with the diamond trade but more generally. Anything dating from around then?"

"Well..." Cerys said smiling as she tossed the imaginary coin in her head "Let's start with the jewellery, I did come with a little bit of a shopping list. Which I may or may not blame on my brother and his desire to be a good boyfriend." she took a breath "Jewellery, clothes, maybe a couple of other things. And a little bit of chit chat."

To say that the feeling shared between the Clysperi Pharaohs was uneasy would, most certainly, be an understatement. Although the Vizier had argued against Akasha going, let alone both Akasha and Seti going to the Jewel of the Desert, his advice had been rejected and here, in this moment, the two Pharaohs found themselves amongst those who at least one of them had long derided for irresponsibility in Midaranye and abroad, and it was not lost upon that certain one that she had once shared with Emperor Abbas her intentions to remove Heydar not only from power, but from life itself. Had he passed that information onto Heydar, she placed herself and her husband in mortal danger by showing their faces in Royal Selucid?

She could not let her anxiety show as they sat, casually dressed, in the Palace lounge. While neither of them did anything which would draw outright attention toward them she was sure that the Seleucid were more than aware of their presence; it was, of course, unprecedented that Clysperi royalty touched foot upon Seleucid soil. Still, Akasha retained a hope that she would have an audience with Heydar at some point, shoring up Clysperi relations throughout Midaranye. Indeed, with the noticeable retreat of Tamora from major affairs within the region and Clysperis declaring a more independent path from Djerb, while she had expanded the diplomatic horizons of the Kingdom it had been beyond Midaranye, almost at the expense of it, in fact.

In a moment of absolute chance she noticed that she and Katerina had shared a glance of eye contact; if she wasn't on the radar before she certainly was now. "Lovely," she said to Seti, "please wait here for a moment with our staff. I've something to address," she continued as she rose to her feet and walked toward Katerina. "Wilhom Queen," she said with a slight nod, "I thank you for your hospitality. I know I may not truly be welcome here, however, all I may say is that my intentions are not rooted in any form of hostility, and you've a beautiful nation that I wish I had visited sooner. I couldn't help but to see your eyes upon me a moment ago so," she paused, "what are the chances I may get an audience with King Heydar so we may finally put this most petty of feuds behind us?"
