Biography:
Matsushige was the Emperor of Daitō for twenty-two years, coming to the throne at the age of 18. During his reign, the golden age started by his ancestors came to an end, but despite this, he did not die in battle. No. Rather, he fell in a duel against the famed swordsman (and a distant cousin of his), Gentaro Hasei. For this, however, Gentaro Hasei would be exiled from the Empire, forced to wander the world, never to return. This incident is recorded in various sources, including Gentaro's own personal writings on that day. Nonetheless, two of the Emperor's sons, Nariyasu and Sadakatsu (16 and 11 respectively), would reign after him, with the former abdicating before he had any heirs, instead wishing to travel the world and discover new lands.

Biography:
Though most of his accomplishments in life were after his time spent as Emperor of Daitō, Nanyasu did prove to be a decent leader for his people, though in a time when they needed another Heiwa or Shiroi Emperor. Nonetheless, wishing to see the world without having to worry about the Empire any time he left, he would abdicate in 1353 in favor of his younger brother. When he returned in 1359, he would settle down (though he had been granted a governorship upon his abdication, he had never visited his new estate) and marry the daughter of a lesser nobleman. To this day, the House Iwata of the Imperial Clan still persists, though its interests now are in the automotive industry, with the Iwata Motor Company bearing its name.

The Tōitsu Emperor on the eve of his Enthronement (painted c. 1709)

Name:
     Sōnosuke
Age:
     59
Gender:
     Male
DoB:
     6 April, 1439
DoD:
     14 September, 1498
Titles:
     The Tōitsu Emperor
Education:
Trained from an early age to rule by the finest scholars of Ikhan, primarily in skills condusive to warfare
Positions held:
     Prince of Kitami (1439 - 1452)
     Crown Prince of Kitami (1452 - 1463)
     Eshai of Kitami (1463 - 1477)
     Emperor of Daitō (1477 - 1498)
Notable for:
Being the First Emperor from Clan Ashina
Unifying Daitō after the Crisis of the 15th century
Reforming the military of Daitō, creating it's first standing army
Launching a series of campaigns beyond the Idaina mountains, granting new lands in the west to them.
Conquering Ikijima, thus beginning its assimilation into Daitōjin culture
     Being a prolific duelist
Being the last Emperor to die in combat
Family:
     Shigetaka Kōshitsu (Father)
     Nagako Kōshitsu (Mother)
     Tadamitsu (Son)
     Katsuyoshi Kōshitsu (Son)
     Others
Biography:
The Tōitsu Emperor, known to some outside of Daitō as Emperor Sōnosuke, was the Emperor who reunified Daitō in the mid-to-late 15th century. Like the Heiwa Emperor before him, he would spend the remaining years of his reign stabilizing the state and consolidating his position, though he would launch an invasion of Rusan as well, bringing the majority of the island under the rule of the Empire before his death, though some holdouts remained into the mid-15th century.

Starting in 1485, Sōnosuke led an army beyond the Idaina mountains, first striking south before turning his sights to the west, to lands lost by his predecessors. He would prove successful in retaking imperial territories from before the interregnum, but, on the eve of 1490, he dedicated himself to a new goal. He would fulfill the dream of his forebears and establish an Daitōjin Empire stretching throughout all of Northern Ardia. While he would certainly make significant progress in achieving this goal, his death in the battle of Kohei in 1498 proved to be the end of this goal. His heirs would continue the expansion of the Empire, but mostly to ward off further threats. Modern Daitō, being a direct continuation of the Empire under the Tōitsu Emperor, maintains claims on not insignificant portions of this realm, though it formally abandoned it's claim on lands within Rokkenjima in the 1960s.

The Tōitsu Emperor is venerated in many sects of the Ishitic faith as either an incarnation of the war god, Kashima, or as a lesser Kami (spirt).

While his reign was mostly uneventful beyond the war in the west, he would nonetheless lead his forces to victory on several occasions throughout his life. However, this life of his would be cut short not by the blade of an enemy, but rather by poorly-prepared food.

Biography:
Among the rulers of Daitō in the 16th Century, none perhaps stand out more than Yoshitsune, who, during his reign, would bring the Empire to it's territorial zenith in the year 1538. Due to the nature of his position as Emperor, that being jointly as the ruler of Daitō and the High Priest of the Teidō Faith (a role only dropped theoretically dropped in 1899), he would abdicate the throne in 1545, with the common consensus being that, due to the many repetitive rituals that he needed to perform, the incumbent deserved a retirement. However, though he would retire from the role, he would nonetheless find himself unable to be content with his existence and would, as a result, assist in military affairs whenever he was needed. He would, in time, live to see his line lose control over the Empire, though with the death of his grandson, he did play a significant role in selecting the next ruler, this task being shared with his firstborn, Harumitsu, who had also abdicated. By the end of his life, he had lived through five Emperors other than himself. He died in 1583 at the age of 71.

Titles:
     The Go-Sesai Emperor
Education:

Biography:
Yoshikuni was an Daitōjin Emperor of the 16th century. His reign is notable as being the beginning a brief decline in the Empire's authority, which led to a brief revolt in the last year of his reign. The next century of the Empire's history would be marked by further unrest, largely due to the local lords that still retained rule over the provinces. Before his death, he insisted that his daughter, Kozue, be allowed to inherit the throne, a wish that would be fulfilled. However, his line would die out with her (as she lacked any children from a matrilineal marriage), and the throne would pass to his nephew afterwards. Yoshikuni, the Go-Sesai Emperor, would pass away on the 14th of December, 1568, after being thrown from his horse during a journey to the Monastery at Mount Idai for his yearly pilgrimage.

Biography:
The only woman to hold the position of Emperor since the 8th century reign of Empress Kaika, Kozue was born to at-the-time Prince Yoshikuni of the Imperial Clan, and as a result, she was never expected to inherit. Despite this, her father ensured that she have the best education that money could buy. Before her father's accession to the throne, she would marry into Clan Himekawa. This would be a patrilineal marriage, with her children as a result being disqualified from succession under the laws of that era. Nonetheless, when she came to the throne at age 30, she had already proven a skilled diplomat, though this was on a local level between the various principalities, duchies, and other states within the at-the-time feudal empire. During her reign, this would extend to the Empire's neighbors, with her successfully negotiating a non-aggression pact with the Ardian Empire, a pact which would last until the early 18th century. She died in 1593 at the age of 55 following a battle with cancer. Following her reign, the throne would pass to her cousin, Prince Yasutomo.

Titles:

Education:

Positions held:

     Crown Prince of Daitō (1568 - 1593)
     Emperor of Daitō (1593 - 1617)
Notable for:

Being the last truly great Emperor of Daitō until the mid-19th century, with his rule being the only in the 17th century not to have a major revolt
Being a dutiful general of the Empire before becoming Emperor
Centralizing the Empire into a de-facto Absolutist state with the Emperor at it's head
Family:
     Nagamasa Kōshitsu (Father)
     Katsumoto (Son)
Biography:
A famed general before becoming Emperor of Daitō, Yasutomo would, through his fair rule and wide-reaching reforms, ensure that his reign would not see any major revolts. In order to do this, he implemented the eponymously-named "Tenshi Reforms" which would see the feudal holdings of the nobility lose autonomy, though they would maintain their positions as the heads of the prefectural and provincial governments and would maintain their titles. In this way, the main part of the class structureŚ the armies levied by the nobilityŚ would be eliminating, allowing for the central government to exercise greater control over the nation as a whole. Nonetheless, this was a task that would be quite difficult to achieve, and indeed it did face many troubles, but the reforms would largely pass (with revision, of course) a few years before the Emperor died. Yasutomo died shortly before the new year in 1617. With his death, the Empire entered into a period of regression, at least externally, and the internal conflicts resumed, though greatly lessened.

Following his retirement, he would spend the later years of his life writing a history of the Daitōjin as a people, now known as the Yasei-hon after the ex-Emperor's regnal name. Unlike past works, it relied almost entirely on actual records, often attempting to discern real events from fiction, though, due to the time, it does have some historical inaccuracies, at least from a modern perspective.
