Sports: Mainio Salminen to attempt to break the Hour Record

Mainio Salminen has confirmed that he will attempt to break the World Cycling Hour Record in the coming weeks. Salminen, who is part of the AABL team for the last Mundus Cycling Cup last event, the Ktsamdinare Classic, in which his teammate Walden Gjeldnes aims to win in case he would won the race or at least is able to get more points than his rivals in the race top positions.

Salminen is currently the three times Mundus Games champion in individual time-trial and he will try to show once again his output against the clock. "I felt it was the right moment to try it". He will attempt to break the record in the Velodrome Samartliani Kalghmerti, located in Dmanoni, with an elevation of 450m.

If he were successful, the AABL rider would become the first Juglander rider to ever break the record.

Salminen recently agreed to expand his contract with AABL until season 2025.

Mktvartvelo: Nation to celebrate rare "War Festivity"

The Temple of Tsminda Meomrebis Mbrdzanebeli, situated nearby Bateli, southern Mktvartvelo, will hold Shvidi Samotsdachvidmeti Festivity, an event which only takes places once every six decades.

The festivity has been held continuously at least since 1709, and it is consecrated to the Jarebupali deity, which is also unofficially considered as patron of the Mktvartvelian armed forces. As a consequence, it is expected the military leadership and national government representatives to attend the celebration, as well as Brzdmtsveli Ketevan and Sinatdedopali (Supreme Priestess) Tsiuri who already confirmed their assistance.

The Shvidi Samotsdachvidmeti Festivity is only held once in every 777 lunar months, approximately around 62 years and 300 days, being held the previous time in December 1960. Therefore, it is considered an unique and rare celebration in the national tradition, as the next time will be in year 2086.

The tradition establishes that seventy-seven white stallions to be offered to the Jarebupali deity. For that reason, a number of horses had to be imported from abroad. Secular groups and social activists have protested against this sacrifice, which they see as "outdated" and "unnecessary animal suffering" in these modern times. However, the Office of the Order of Simartlea has confirmed that the ritual will be fulfilled according to the traditional rites. "In these times", Sinatdedopali Tsiuri argued in a statement, "life has become so comfortable and sanitized, that we see cruelty in acts required to connect our communities with the supernatural. But it will not be neither moral nor responsible to cut the knot between us and our ancestors in exchange of an artificial idea of nature, from we find ourselves and more and more detached, trying to escape the cycle of life". The horses were chosen for their suitability according the rites of purity, the Order of Simartlea explained in their website.

It is expected that dozens of priestesses, from temples consecrated to the divinity, will attend to the festival in Temple of Tsminda Meomrebis Mbrdzanebeli. However, smaller services as expected in the other temples around the country dedicated to the Jarebupali divinity.

Mktvartvelo: Protests in Ktsatskuri as union leaders face trial

Members and sympathizers of the All-Mktvartvelian Labour Union (SMSK), one of the two largest unions in Mktvartvelo, started their protests as Merab Dekanozishvili, SMSK General Secretary, and other SMSK members and independent workers activist are facing charges of violation of the labour code, between other related offenses, in a trial in Ktsatskuri, capital city of the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo.

Merab Dekanozishvili has declared the trial "a violation of their civil rights" and warned that their voice will not be silenced. "We see this trial as an attempt to smear and attack all workers in this country, not just act", Dekanozishvili argued. The charges are related to violating the arbitration rules through the organization of illegal and political national strikes. The case is not related to last Summer wave of protests, by rather last Winter national strikes called by the SMSK.

The national government has denied any involvement in the trial, even if prosecutors rejected to drop charges as demanded by the defendants, insisting that the judiciary system is independent and the government does not aim to interfere with the judiciary.

It was rumoured that the SMSK union may launch a national strike in protest of the trial. However, the national leadership finally agreed to call a campaign of protests and civil disobediance, probably in order to avoid legal problems for the defendants during the trial. They have also suspended their participation in the Permanent Committee for Labour and Social Advancement as consequence of the trial, rejecting any negotiation with the national government as the trial is ongoing.

"There is no place for dialogue as the rights of the workers are about to be trampled", the union declared in a statement. Prime Minister Brdzeni Kvirkvelia previously confirmed that he was willing to bring a reform of the labour code, but under the current circumstances, the prospects of such reform are not very likely.

The protests were largely peaceful, resulting without incidents between law enforcement and protestors.

Sports: SKA Azavrelia confirms top place in regular league

SKA Azavrelia defeated Ghiatsis Tsnumi by 73-69, which leaves the club from Azavrelia as virtual champions of the regular league with only three matches to go.

It was not an easy match for SKA Azavrelia, the 2022 champions of the Mktvartvelian women's basketball league, as Ghiatsis Tsnumi, after a poor third quarter for SKA Azavrelia (16-26) , took a 49-53 lead. It has not been an easy season for the club from Tsnumi, as they failed to qualify to the Brzdmtsveli Cup earlier this season, but they showed today why they finished third in the regular league last season.

However, SKA Azavrelia was able to come back in the final quarter to win their 20th win in 23 matches. International Mktvartvelian player Marlena Chilachava, with ten points and two rebounds in the last quarter, led the team to win the match.

"I can only be disappointed with this result after our effort", Ghiatsis Tsnumi coach declared. "But if they keep the play of the first thirty minutes in the remaining three matches, I am convinced that we will be in the playoffs".

With just only three matches to the end of the regular season, SKA Azavrelia has a lead of four wins over Sakhre Kalebi Lagotsminda and Sanzhebi Martvilisi, who will try to postpone at least one week more SKA Azavrelia's final confirmation in the top place in the regular league.

National Government suggest the creation of "National Corps" to fight crime

The Mktvartvelian Patrolmen's Association (MPA), one of the largest police unions in the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo, has criticized the recent draft proposal jointly written by the Ministry of State Security and the Ministry of National Defense. The proposal envisions the creation of a "National Corps", a militarized territorial force with aim to fight organized crime and terrorism, between other secondary purposes such as assisting in the maintenance of the public order.

Minister of State Security Otar Sanikidze has proposed the National Corps could be joined by reservists and active policemen who completed an additional military service in the armed forces.

However, MPA declares to oppose the move, which they describe as "a militarization of the law enforcement". MPA spokesperson argues that "our police force currently fulfill that role with efficiency and professionalism".

Mktvartvelian police force was the aim of harsh criticism during and after the wave of protests last Summer, both for cases of police brutality and their inability to properly restore public order against violent protests.

Minister of State Security Otar Sanikidze has suggested that, unlike the Mktvartvelian armed forces, these National Corps may not operate in the territory of Jugland.

A number of liberal-leaning and left-leaning MPs have expressed their concern and opposition to this proposal. MP Gocha Khoshtaria has called the National Assembly to block this proposal "at least until the next legislative election", giving the "nature of the current circumstances and the lack of urgency for such proposal".

Mktvartvelo: Brzdmtsveli Ketevan accused to be a member of secret organization

Okropir Mochvenebadze, a controversial writer and journalist, has gained notoriety in recent days, after he accused Brzdmtsveli Ketevan, head of state of the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo, of being a member of a secret society, the Sorority of the Sacred Signs.

Mochvenebadze is not someone new to controversy. In the 1980s and 1990s he was involved as writer in paranormal magazines, publishing several books on the topic and even leading a radio show on the topic during nine years. He later become more involved in politics, founding a short-lived political magazine, and running as candidate to the National Assembly twice and once to the Council of State. He does not exactly enjoy a strong following, but he has been able to gain some attention with his often wild claims, which often revolve around ultra-nationalism and conspiracy theories. His last book was published more than five months ago, but his claims only gained traction last week, when he was interviewed in a live podcast. "The recent events", Mochvenebadze assured during the interview, in reference to the wave of protests and consequent political crisis, "have backed my research about the [Brzdmtsveli Ketevan's] election and subsequent policy decisions and political events". Mochvenebadze assures that a collusion of a theological cabal funded by foreign interests aimed to weaken the state institutions and increase migration are behind such developments.

Mochvenebadze's claims were described as "the ramblings of a madman" and "conspiracy theory" by both right-leaning and left-leaning media in Mktvartvelo, however, they received attention and comments in social media. The claims could also imply legal problems for the controversial author, as insulting and defaming of the Brzdmtsveli (Mktvartvelo's head of state) is a crime in Mktvartvelian law, punishable by up to eight years in prison.

But what's the "Sorority of the Sacred Signs"?

The Sorority of the Sacred Signs, established in 1979, is the offshoot of an older and more controversial organization, the Brotherhood of Brothers. While its origins remain unclear, it is believed that the Brotherhood of Brothers was established in the late 19th century as a secret organization. They were heavily involved in the coup d'etat against Tamara I (Brzdmtsveli Ketevan's great-great-grandmother) and during the National War (1897-1904). While the influence of the organization waned in the 1930s, experienced a reboot in the 1960s. However, for the involvement of some of their leading members in the failed 1977 coup d'etat, the organization was officially dissolved. Only in the late 1990s, some former members were allowed to establish a new organization, the Mktvartvelian Brotherhood, which many consider a new incarnation of the Brotherhood of Brothers.

While the Brotherhood of Brothers was a men-only organization, it established a women's wing, the Sorority Charter, which also operated as a secret organization. After the 1977  failed coup d'etat, the Sorority Charter broke up relations with the main organization, the Brotherhood, and renamed as the "Sorority of Sacred Signs" in 1979. Since then, the Sorority has operated as an independent organization. While often called a "secret organization" and its membership is unknown and the leadership, rules and meetings are not public, the existence of the Sorority is not exactly a secret, as the organization has its headquarters in the city Azavrelia, in the building of an old theatre that the organization acquired in 2001.

The Sorority of the Sacred Signs describes itself as an apolitical organization which is aim is to "promote cooperation, friendship, and understanding through devotion and spiritual awakening". The organization rejects to be a religious organization, despite the belief in initiation rites to join the organization. Being an active member of the Order of Simartlea is considered a requirement, and its membership is believed to be open to prominent members of the community, including religious magistrates and retired priestesses of the Order. Only women are allowed as members. Despite rumours, however, the Order of Simartlea denies to have any links with the Sorority, as actived priestesses are not allowed to join any kind of political and social associations. The Sorority is believed to have five chapters (as their regional sections are called) throughout the country.

There is no knowledge of Brzdmtsveli Ketevan to have been a member of the organization, before or after becoming head of state, nor being present in any official or unofficial meeting of the organization.

Okropir Mochvenebadze declared yesterday that he "is not afraid of any legal consequence" as he remains "certain about the truth of my research" and he "will not be silenced". Mochvenebadze has declared that he has confidence in Prime Minister Brdzeni Kvirkvelia and Mktvartvelo's armed forces as "the only force able to bring unity and strength against our enemies, inside and outside our nation", but he is "strongly considering" to try to enter in politics once again to offer his contribution toward "the salvation of our nation".

The Office of the Brzdmtsveli has not officially commented in these claims and controversy.

Mktvartvelo: Abakha university to expand research on Islam

The University of Abakha has announced that it will open a new faculty in their university, the Faculty of Islamic Theology and History, which will be focused in the academic research of Islam, as both a religion as it is history in different nations. The new faculty will establish new four degrees which will be open for the next year, starting on March.

The university will also establish the Aranyean institute of Comparative Religions, which for now will be focused in the academic study of religions, both past and present, which had " an estimable presence and influence in the history of Mktvartvelo".

Both the Faculty of Islamic Theology and History and Aranyan institute of Comparative Religions will open shorter official monographic courses on Islamic Theology. The incription will be opened to anyone who meets the criteria following the new faculty inauguration, which is expected to be held next week.

It is believed that these first monographic courses will meet the formation requirements for active members of religious organizations established in the recent religious reform passed by the parliament, upon confirmation and approval by the National Directorate of Education.

The University of Abakha is a public university, funded by the state, and the inscription in the new degrees and courses will have the same price that the equivalent same degrees and courses already existing in the university, the university spokesperson has confirmed.

However, the new religious requirements have met the criticism of religious minorities, particularly in the Islamic community, which has more than one million members in Mktvartvelo. Islamic author Anas El-Meguid has described them as "a scheme aimed to establish state-approved clergy and forbid unlicensed religious members the right to preach and teach fellow believers".

Sports: Veronika Chayka joins Kommuna Ladies

Kommuna Ladies unveiled the signing of Veronika Chayka for the next two seasons. The 27-year old Juglander rider joined ZSD-Laparaki in 2022, and continued this season in MKTkom team. "I felt that I needed a new stage in my career", she explained. She will sign a two-year contract, until the end of the 2025 season.

Veronika Chayka started her career as promising one-day races specialist, although she has been very often serving as a domestique for her teammates in the last two seasons. She obtained her first professional win in 2022, in which she won the Tour of Marnaki, a one-day race held in Mktvartvelo, as well as proclaiming national champion as she won the Juglander National Championship road race.

Her role in the team was reduced this season, however, as she was not selected for MKTkom squad for neither the Tour of Ardia nor Tour of Khelvakheli. Her best result this season was a third place at the Lawson Challenge.

"I have only gratitude for my teammates, as I am thankful for my experience in the team, which has allowed me to grow both as a rider and a person", Chayka declared in a statement. "Joining Kommuna Ladies, one of the best teams in the world peloton, will be a real challenge", she explained. "It will not be easy, but I feel I will fit in very well with this team, which I join as just another rider more.  One always wants to be in the best races of the world, of course, but I will be ready to do my best, whether for myself or a teammate...Riding in the most difficult scenarios, whatever my role is decided to be, is what motivates me as a rider".

Chayka will not be the only rider who will not continued in MKTkom team in 2024. Tsisana Iludize announced this week that she has agreed with the team to terminate her contract, as she wishes to concentrate in mountain bike, gravel, and cyclocross races in the next season, rather than in road cycling. MKTkom team, however, has confirmed that they have signed a sponsorship agreement with Iludidze until late 2024. Tsisana Iludize's sister, Natela, will continue to ride with MKTkom next season, as she expanded her contract with the Mktvartvelian cycling team until the 2026 season.

Mktvartvelo: Christian preacher to face deportation

George Ephraim Whittredge, a resident from Tsagedia, became the first clergyman sanctioned by the State Reform for Religious Freedom and Social Integration Act, which became law a few weeks ago. The legislation established sanctions against members of the clergy or preachers from non-native religious organizations or churches to perform their duties without an official or recognized formation or license.

Whittredge, a member of the Tytorian Reformed Church, arrived to the country twenty years ago. Since 2014, he is a leading member of their religious community in Tsagedia, a city in eastern Mktvartvelo.  An administrative court of the Ministry of Religious Affairs has ruled Mr. Whittredge as guilty of ignoring an official warning against unlicensed preaching in a religious ceremony. While the sentence will have to be reviewed by an ordinary court before being officially enforced, Mr. Whittredge was sanctioned to pay a fine of up to $2,500 and have his rights to work and residency revoked.

It is unclear if the Tytorian Reformed Church local branch may face an official inquiry or the disciplinary actions would be limited to Mr. Whittredge's case. If the defendant were found guilty of violating the provisions introduced in the State Reform for Religious Freedom and Social Integration Act, he would be deprived of documented residency, therefore deprived of certain social services, and probably facing deportation from the country.

Several churches have criticized the case as a violation of the freedom of religion, and they have demanded Prime Minister Brdzeni Kvirkvelia at least to establish a moratorium for the application of the legislation, as a large number of churches and religious communities fear they have members in their community able to be approved as licensed preachers in the current circumstances. The People's Church of Jugland, while it did not comment on the issue directly, has also expressed support for such moratorium.

The national government has not commented on the issue, indicating they do not wish to influence or interfere in a legal case which will be in the hands of the judiciary now.

Mktvartvelo: National government denies claims of religious persecution

Inga Ushkaladze, the national government spokesperson has rejected criticism regarding State Reform for Religious Freedom and Social Integration Act. "The government remains strongly committed to religious freedoms", she argued, "and the recent legislative reforms are a strong evidence of that. We have decriminalized all forms of religious expression, reduce arbitrariness regarding the application of the law, in balance with our duties toward the protection of national sovreignty and cultural identity".

While the State Reform for Religious Freedom and Social Integration Act abolished the controversial crime of "aggressive proselytism", it also established stricter rules regarding the legal status of foreign religious organizations and requirements on the members of the clergy, which has caused criticism by members of religious minorities as well as abroad.

"Religious organizations have a duty toward respecting the law as well as the service they provide their own members", Ushkaladze declared. "For that reason, we are convinced that the legislation will strengthen religious organizations and freedom of religion, rather than weakening it". Regarding the case of a member from the Tytorian Reformed Church that incited the controversy the national government spokesperson declared that "I am not going to comment on that, as we strongly respect the independence of the judiciary".

Ushkaladze denied rumours about special flights chartered by foreign government for members of religious minorities willing to leave the country. "We have not detected any unusual activity in our airports", she declared. "As it is well-known, the State Reform for Religious Freedom and Social Integration Act has removed any sanction or punishment for the actions of members of religious organizations regarding the practice of their religion. Believers of any faith or religion have nothing to be afraid about", she assured. "We are convinced that freedom of religion has never been stronger in our country than it is today, and citizens will be able to practice their faith freely".

Juglander authorities assure their compromise toward freedom of religion

"Freedom of speech and freedom of religion are two fundamental rights of our constitution and our compromise toward their protection is absolute", the Secretary of Health and Social Policy Gottwyna Waldys Astrup-Wassmo declared in reference on the recent controversy about religious legislation in mainland Mktvartvelo.

Secretary Emmeline Kolseth declared similarly that "democracy and tolerance are the basis of our values and any person who embraces them will be always welcomed to our land, independently of their nationality, ethnicity, or religious faith.  Religion and personal faith shall be exercised freely without intervention of the state".

The Vice-President of the State Governorate, Theudbald Salovaara, however, rejected calls by a group of members of the Legislative Assembly who proposed civil disobedience in the case that any religious organization or believer who moves to Jugland and would be found facing charges or punishment for their belief. "Rule of law is a principle without which democracy, security, and freedom are not possible", Vice-President Salovaara declared. "No state representative or government can be above the law, as  it is our duty to protect, respect, and enforce the law, independently of our personal convictions. We would be doing a diservice to our fellow citizens, endanger our own constitution, if we would do otherwise". Salovaara, however, assured that the State Governorate opposes to any legislation aimed to restrict freedom of religion in the territory.

Mktvartvelo: Armed forces march on Victory Day

The Armed Forces of Mktvartvelo conducted the largest official parade in recent years in Ktsatskuri to celebrate Gamarjvebisdghe ("Victory Day"). The day celebrates the 344th anniversary of the Battle of Kutatsqaro, in which Mktvartevli troops led by Ramaz Abuladze defeated the army of Abydos and their allies. The parade was attended by Brzdmtsveli Ketevan and Prime Minister Brdzeni Kvirkvelia, along other Mktvartvelian officers.

Hundreds of soldiers participated in the parade, as well as twenty aircraft from the Air Force. In recent years, the military parade had reduced its size and length. However, this year it returned to its traditional route through the streets of the capital city. During the parade, the convoy also saluted Brzdmtsveli Ketevan has commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

Prime Minister Brdzeni Kvirkvelia, who was himself until this year a military officer with the rank of general, has praised the service of the soldiers to the nation. He highlighted the importance of military deterrence to maintain freedom and peace.

Some citizens have expressed criticism of the changes as "unnecessary expenditure". Howevers, others have expressed their joy about the performance of soldiers and aircraft during the parade.

KMK Kareledia wins Mktvartvelo's Basketball National League regular season

Despite their defeat at home by 70-79 against SK Martvilisi, KMK Kareledia proclaimed champion of the regular season with 25 wins in 34 matches. KMK will face SK Ktsatskuri in the Playoffs quarterfinals, which will start next week.

KMK Kareledia started their match with a clear advantage to win the regular league thanks to a clear advantage on the point average with a win more over their rivals, SKA Azavrelia, which probably explain a poor performance on defense against SK Martvilisi who was promoted this season from the second-tier division.

However, it was close to backfire, as SKA Azavrelia crushed Otsneba Sachkhumi by 101-59 in their final match, being close to become winners of the regular season merely by a few points. SKA Azavrelia will face precisely Otsneba Sachkhumi in the playoffs quarterfinals, in which they will try to avoid the disaster of the last season, in which despite to be one of the favourites to the title they were knocked out in the quarterfinals.

"I feel we are a much more balanced and mature team this season", SKA Azavrelia player Irakli Balguridze declared. "There is no room for overconfidence but we are ready to prove our fans that we are prepared for everything".

Sports: Women's baseball players to strike over pay conditions

Players in Jugland's Women's Baseball Professional League Cup, the the highest level of women's baseball in Jugland, have announced a strike.

The two largest of women's baseball players unions have agreed on a permanent strike until their demands are satisfied. Several clubs have delayed their salaries to players and employees, with at least players of two clubs have not received their salaries in the last two months. The players also demand a minimum wage and collective bargaining agreement at the league level.

The Women's Baseball Professional League Cup was established in 2009, when for first time a women's professional league was established in Jugland. A minimum salary was agreed on 2010, but remained stagnant in the following seasons, with the agreement expiring in 2020, without a new agreement between the league and the players.

The Women's Baseball Professional Association, which gathers the clubs which participate in the Women's Baseball Professional League Cup have described the demands as unrealistic. "The strike will only endanger further the financial situation of our clubs", they argued in a statement, "worsening the prospects of every of the clubs personnel". Women's Baseball Professional Association argues that the current situation was caused by a severe contraction of new investors and sponsors, and an insufficient increase of crowd number, not by the management of the clubs.

The players, gathered in two unions, argued that the situation is not proper of a professional league, and the well-being of the players and their families is currently endangered. Players insist that no fixture will be played until an agreement is reached. The players have also called government authorities to mediate and support their case.

The Women's Baseball Professional Association insists that the strike will only worse the financial situation of the clubs, and that clubs may be forced to release players or even the league may have no option but to shut down before the season is over.

Mktvartvelo: Union leaders to face prison sentences

Union leader Merab Dekanozishvili, General Secretary of the All-Mktvartvelian Labour Union, along seven other members of the same organization were found guilty in court for the crime of repeated violations of the labour code, ignoring the rules of arbitration tribunals, and damages to the economic activity.

Dekanozishvili was sentenced to a prison term of two years and four years of full disqualification of any representative position in registered organizations. Other members of the organization received sentences from four months to twelve months of prison. Other seventeen defendants were acquitted of all charges.

Dekanozishvili denounced the ruling as "politically motivated" and "political persecution" against the workers movement. The All-Mktvartvelian Labour Union (SMSK) announced that they will leave the Permanent Committee for Labour and Social Advancement, and called for protests against the decision. "There can be no dialogue with the authorities while union leaders are being sent to prison". Others union, such as the Confederation of Workers and Independent Professionals, have strongly criticized the ruling although they rejected a proposal to a joint national strike in defense of the defendants.

The sentence to imprisonment will not be immediately effective, however, as the defendants have decided to appeal to the Supreme Court.

Inga Ushkaladze, the national government spokesperson has simply declared that the government "simply respect and comply with judiciary decisions and therefore we have no need to comment further on this ruling".

Sports: SKA Azavrelia starts league playoffs with an ardous win

SKA Azavrelia defeated Ktsatskuri SK by 67-63 in the first playoff match for the title. The match was intense in defense although with a larger number of errors rather than excellence on attack.

SKA Azavrelia, one of the favourites to the title, ended with a 53-40 lead in the third quarter and it seemed they would win the match more than comfortably. However, a poor fourth quarter, in which the local team was only able to score in the last five minutes through free throws resulted in a close result at the end. SKA Azavrelia won the match despite merely a 63% accuracy at free throws and a three-point accuracy of merely 10%, their worst record in all the season.

Still, the club of Azavrelia will travel to Ktsatskuri with the aim to close the qualification to the league semifinals. Small Forward Givi Goginashvili with twenty points and seven rebounds was chosen as the MVP of the match.

"It was not our best match. The numbers speak for themselves. But we were able to have the required patience. We'll need to improve but it was a first step", SKA Azavrelia coach declared.

In the other match of the day, incumbent league champions Merani Khashumi defeated Niadatsqali Restejo by 84-59.

Mktvartvelo: University professor to launch republican party

Eldar Danelia, an university professor from the University of Khashumi, has announce his intention to launch a republican political party. A few weeks ago, through an "Open Letter" published in Sotsialuri Mimukhilva, a left-leaning political magazine, he had already announced that he would be running as candidate in Khashumi too the National Assembly in the coming legislative election.

"I have contacted some political representatives and members and groups of the civil society, who share some of the concerns and ideas I have expressed since I published it [the Open Letter], Danelia declared. He is also the co-author of a recent manifesto, later joined by several political activists, calling for a political gathering in Azavrelia next week, under the name of Republican Initiative. While he described it as a "formal and structured interchange of ideas" in an interview, Danelia also declared that he is hopeful, along others, that it will help to "bring forward a political reality into something concrete and organized".

Danelia, who has taught Philosophy in the University of Khashumi since 2014, is known in the academic community for his research on the field of language and culture but he has no previous political experience. He has, however, published a weekly article in Sotsialuri Mimukhilva for years, in which he usually addresses political issues, as well as writing for other publications such as Dazverva newspaper from time to time as opinion writer.

Last weekend, he participated in the Radical Forum for Democracy and Equality, particularly in a debate which also included MP Nino Shalikashvili. In the debate, Shalikashvili expressed support for the idea of a written constitution. Danelia argued that this is not enough, "as democratic content should shape democratic initiatives". Danelia claimed there should be a political space for those aiming to support and strengthen "liberal democracy, secularism, and true political equality".

Danelia has declared that his republican advocacy is "not based in an opposition in a personal level" but "rather the political convention that the political structures that our nation forged became an obstacle to a more meaningful form of democracy and rule of law and proper checks and balances regarding the conduct and policy of political representatives.

The candidate, who expressed earlier support for some of the policies promoted during Prime Minister Bidzina Samkharadze's government, has not expressed where he stands on certain issues, such as economic or foreign policy. "We should not be dogmatic into certain policy issues", he argued during last weekend debate, "and instead focus in some core values and principles as well as institutional reforms".  He has declared that he has no "political ambitions" but rather "being a vehicle toward political change in a democratic and meaningful direction".

Midfielder Yu "Daniel" Maki scored the only goal for the Juglander team.

Mktvartvelo: Supreme Court confirms ruling against union case

Mktvartvelo's Supreme Court has ruled that no constitutional rights were violated in the sentencing of union leaders and representatives for violations of the labour code and public order during 2022 Autumn nationwide general strikes.

The Supreme Court, however, has reduced the sentences, in both in months in prison and economic fees, to five of the defendants, arguing the court ruling did not fulfill the coherence required for the principle of proportionality established in the law.

Merab Dekanozishvili, General Secretary of the All-Mktvartvelian Labour Union, will remain as the defendant facing the highest sentence of all the eight defendants, up to a prison term of two years and four years of full disqualification of any representative position. As established in the law, the defendants will be given 15 days for the voluntary entry to prison and one month for the payment of the economic compensations.

Sports: KK Lagotsminda further complicates options to the league title

Tsertili Ozurkha surprised KK Lagotsminda winning by 30-23.  The defeat leaves KK Lagotsminda with a complicated situation for the league title if SK Azavrelia wins their match in Zestomi tomorrow, as they would be able to increase their lead in the league with only three matches left.

"We clearly lost concentration in the final four minutes", the Lagotsminda coach explained. "There were still too many imprecisions through the match. It was not our best performance. We need to think in the need week right now. It will not depend on us but we are ready to fight to the end".

KK Lagotsminda will face SK Sachkhumi, currently sixth in the classification, at home next week. Last year, SK Sachkhumi defeated away the club from Lagotsminda, which had proclaimed champion the week before. This time, the current incumbent champions of Mktvartvelo's Men's Handball League will have only the win as option if they want to remain alive in the fight for the title.

Sports: Juglander Mainio Salminen breaks cycling World Hour Record

The three-times Mundus Games winner Mainio Salmien broke the Cycling Hour Record by covering a distance of 51.481 km in 60 minutes at the Velodrome Samartliani Kalghmerti, located in Dmanoni, Mktvartvelo.

With this historic performance, the Salminen becomes the first Juglander rider to break the hour record. One Juglander newspaper titled the achievement as "the fastest bike in the history of humanity".

Reacting to his successful attempt, Salminen declared "to achieve this wonderful goal is fantastic for me and for all the staff and teammates who have worked for a long time to get to this result". The new world record holder did not rule out another attempt. "I felt I started losing energy after crossing the 50 km mark", he explained. "I do not expect this record to stand for long, as it happened with previous records. I can do it myself better, I am convinced, and I'm young enough to try it again in the future, particularly at another part of the season when I have fresher legs, of course".

But Salminen declared to not be too concerned about those prospects right now. "Now, it's time to celebrate and think about recovery. After that, we'll start to prepare the next season, in which I hope to improve what we did this season".

Mainio Salminen, 29, will continue another reason with AABL cycling team, as he recently extended his contract with the Juglander cycling team until late 2025.

Sports: Jugland team first three points at the Women's World Cup

Jugland women's football national team obtained their first win in their debut at the Abertone World Cup. They defeated Kalasin with a 3-1 victory.

The Juglander team controlled the match, having creating many chances. 23-year-old midfielder Sato Yoko scored two goals. "We missed many clear chances so there is clearly room for improvement", Sato declared. "Our aim has to be to win every match".

The Juglander coach, Ida Eastenden, was not too satisfied about the result, however. "We executed the plan as expected, but there were errors which needs to be avoided in the coming matches. We need to be more concentrated in defense when we face serious rivals". The Juglander conceded only a goal in the second half, in a header after a cross from the right, in which Juglander goalkeeper Warina Salin was not able to stop to start the world cup with a clean sheet.

Mktvartvelo: SMSK union holds urgent meeting against Supreme Court ruling

The All-Mktvartvelian Labour Union (SMSK) held an extraordinary meeting in which they denounced ruling against union leaders, which was confirmed by Mktvartvelo's Supreme Court last week. They particularly blamed the Ministry of Justice in their statement, and called for an immediate reform of the labour system which "has proved to be incompatible with most basic rights and freedoms of the workers of this country". The majority approved a campaign of protests against the ruling and in defense of "union freedom". They have claimed they have received support for their release through the world.

However, Paktebi newspaper has claimed that sources described the meeting as "heated and divided", as a majority had rejected the proposal by those close to General Secretary Merab Dekanozishvili to call for a national strike and civil disobedience against the ruling. It was also reportedly blocked a motion to repeal the 16th article on SMSK Charter, which does not allow those convicted of any crime to remain as paid representatives of the union, arguing as only an union congress would have the authority to do so. Still, the official statement agreed by the SMSK leadership called for solidarity toward Dekanozishvili and other SMSK representatives affected by the ruling.

The extraordinary meeting also passed a motion establishing an "Interim Executive Commission" to replace SMSK General Secretariat after Dekanozishvili was banned to fulfill the representative duties. It is rumoured that SMSK may use a new established labour foundation, technically independent from the union, as a form of informal leadership of the union. Meanwhile, Dekanozishvili and the other defendants sentenced to jail have only three days before their voluntary entry to prison.

Sports: Merani Khashumi takes lead in playoffs semifinals

Merani Khashumi defeated SKA Azavrelia by 86-100 in their first semifinal playoff match. Both teams had reached the semifinals after defeating their rivals in two matches without a defeat in the quarterfinal, but the Azavrelia club came to the match as clear favourites as they had defeated Merani Khashumi in their two regular league matches.

It certainly seemed that the result was going to be repeated, to the delight of the local fans, as SKA Azavrelia was leading the match by 55-43 after the first half. However, after a poor third and fourth quarter, Merani Khashumi proved highly effective at both attack and defense and won the match more than comfortably.

PG Sofiane Saiss, with 18 points and two assists, and young SF Tariel Nikuradze, with 17 points and 2 rebounds, proved key to Merani Khashumi win.

Both teams will face each other, again in Azavrelia, next Saturday for the second match of their semifinal. "There can be mistakes, we need to correct what we saw in the last 15 minutes", SKA Azavrelia coach warned after the match.

Mktvartvelo: Ministry of Justice proposes pardon to SMSK union leaders sentenced to prison

Ministry of Justice Shalva Metreveli has announced that his ministry has proposed Prime Minister Brdzeni Kvirkvelia an official pardon for the defendants on the case against SMSK union.

Minister Metreveli has declared that the proposed official pardon would cover 7 of the 9 charges in which they were convicted, allowing them to avoid imprisonment. Tomorrow evening ends the period in which they should start their prison sentence.

If the official pardon was accepted by the Prime Minister, it would require the approval and signature, after which it would become effective. The official pardon requires that the convicted citizens issue a declaration of admission of their guilt and official apology.

A SMSK spokesperson has described the proposal as "a cynical ploy". However, it is expected that some of the defendants are likely to accept the terms, if the proposal were accepted, according to reports.

Mktvartvelo: Eto Kvachantiradze, former minister, to run state energy corporation

Eto Kvachantiradze, 43, has been appointed as CEO of MKT Energia-NaMoGaz. She previously served as Minister of Energy from early 2022 to July 2023.

The appointment came as the merger between Mkt-NaMoGaz, a state-owned oil and gas company, and MKT Energia, another company from the energy sector, was officially announced this week. Both companies will be merged into a new company, MKT Energia-NaMoGaz. It is expected the corporate merger will have a combined 52% state ownership.

MKT Energia was established as a state-owned company in 1931 under the name of Mktvartvelo Energy State Company.  It was later privatized in the early 1980s and renamed. In the last decades, the company was mostly engaged in making investment in energy companies and deals with the electricity distribution and sales. Now, its assets will return under state control. It had a $1.5 billion revenue in 2022.

The appointment of Eto Kvachantiradze, who was a MKT Energia employee from 2008 to 2011, as well as working for MKT-NaMoGaz from 2011 to 2018, came as a surprise. She served as Minister of Energy under Bidzina Samkharadze's government, and there were rumours that she could be running to the National Assembly in the next legislative election. Instead, she seems to have chosen to continue her career in the professional sector.

Mktvartvelo: National government to establish "Solidarity Wage Fund"

The national government has announced it will introduce legislation aimed to establish a "Solidarity Wage Fund". The plan would establish an independent fund, managed by the Ministry of Labour and Social Society and paid by mostly compulsory wage contributions.

The aim is that the proposed fund would offer loans, with a minor interest rate, to low income families, social organizations and community projects. The fund would be funded through a compulsory wage contribution to be paid from monthly salaries, as well as by companies. It has been proposed a different rate, from 1% to 5% of a monthly salary, depending of income, as well as depending of the size of the company. Additional contributions, through the state budget, could be implemented as well.

The initiative is aimed to decrease inequality and contribute to social integration and equal opportunities for all families, the Minister of Labour and Social Security has argued. However, a number of lawmakers have expressed concern about the proposal, which could increase the burden of the middle class and companies, as well as affecting negatively to the productivity, they have argued.

Sports: Tsraan Abakha qualifies to Mktvartvelo's Men's Basketball League Final

After three extra times, Tsraan Abakha defeated KMK Kareledia, the favourite and winners of the regular season, by 120-101. Tsraan Abakha will attempt to conquest their second title after winning the 2022 National Cup.

In the final five minutes, Tsraan Abakha did not give a chance to KMK Kareledia, with an almost perfect defense and high accuracy from the three-point line, with a 22-4 result.

Tsraan Abakha proved unmatched at home, winning each of their three playoff matches, as well as surprising KMK Kareledia in their first semifinal match. While KMK Kareledia was able to balance the semifinal in a close win (75-74) in their second match, they could not win in their two visits to Abakha and force a fifth match.

Tsraan Abakha will face Merani Khashumi in the final for the title. "It will not be easy, giving the strong opponent we will be facing and under home court disadvantage", Tsraan Abakha coach declared, "but we have gained the right to dream, both for us and the fans".

Mtiliani Corporation to acquire Sheshpoteba Industries

Mtliani Corporation has acquired 20% of the shares of Sheshpoteba Industries, completing a takeover of the company as it already owned about 35% of them since 2022. Mtliani Corporation will strengthen the position as the largest energy corporation in Mktvartvelo, and likely one in the continent as well.

Sheshpoteba Industries, a petrochemical firm, a oil refiner and petrol retailer, will be integrated into Mtliani Group. A new CEO is expected to be appointed. However, Mtliani Corporation has assured that current contracts and projects of the company will continue, as well as the future of most of the employees of the company.

The national government, through MKT Energia-NaMoGaz and a state-owned fund, will increase their shares in Sheshpoteba Industries to the 20%, becoming the second largest shareholder after Mtliani Corporation itself.

Critics have showed their concern about the risk of monopoly and capital concentration in the sector, as Mtliani Corporation and MKT Energia-NaMoGaz would have combined more than 80% of the energy sector. However, Mtliani Corporation has assured that they are certain that the move will strengthen the sector, favouring investment and technological modernization which "will give soon clear benefits to investors and customers alike, improving the productivity and the service offered".

Sheshpoteba Industries had a revenue of $69 billion in 2022. As consequence of the takeover, Mtliani Group is believed to have reached a market capitalization close to 200 billion, consolidating as the largest conglomerate in the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo.

Mktvartvelo: SMSK union elects new leadership

In a extraordinary congress held in the city of Martvilisi, the All-Mktvartvelian Labour Union (SMSK), one of the two largest unions in the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo, elected a new leadership.

In a close result, Otar Basalaiashvili was elected as General Secretary of the All-Mktvartvelian Labour Union, replacing Merab Dekanozishvili who was banned to serve in representative duties in the recent court case regarding violation of the labour legislation.

According to a report from Dazverva, the convention turned particularly heated when it was discussed a resolution about the possibility of SMSK rejoining the Permanent Committee for Labour and Social Advancement under certain condition. The final resolution issued that the organization would only join the advisory council if three conditions were met: a reform of the labour code regarding the legal status strikes, a review of the arbitration process, and a further increase of the minimum wage.

The last straw seemed to come in the last day of the congress, in which delegates were about to discuss amends to the union's charter and changes in the organization of branches. After a failed negotiations which lasted about 2 hours, four branches and nineteen local branches of the union left the chamber and announced their intention to leave the organization. Most of the delegates who joined the statement are considered close to the former leadership. Still, about 2/3 of the general assembly voted in favour of the final amendment, after Otar Basalaiashvili himself reportedly intervened to reduce the number of proposals included in the final resolution.

In his closing speech, which was interrupted for four times but still got a large applause at its end, General Secretary Otar Basalaiashvili promised to continue building an alternative, through both strength and unity, in defense of the interests of the workers.

Mktvartvelo: Survey suggests clear support for current government

A survey from pollster Momavali gave an estimation that 54% of voters in Mktvartvelo declared that they would vote for political party or coalition of the current government, if it would decide to run as an united political organization. Prime Minister Brdzeni Kvirkvelia, who was appointed as head of government on last July, has not confirmed if he will run as candidate in the coming legislative election, which will be held in late February. Kvirkvelia, a former military officer, is not officially aligned with any existing political organization or parliamentary faction.

Another 17% of the voters declare they would vote for a Liberal candidate if elections were to be held today. About 14% of the voters declared willing to vote for Moderate Alligment, a centrist political coalition which was created recently. About 15% of the voters declared their support for right-leaning or conservatives candidates and political parties.

It is uncertain if such polls could be considered reliable, as it will be the first election under the Civic Reform Act, which removed most restrictions in campaigning and expanded the number of voters who will have the right to vote, particularly between those below 30 years old. In such new circumstances, it may be difficult to predict the outcome compared to previous elections.

Next February, voters will elect 120 representatives of the current 599 members of the National Assembly, as well as electing 11 members to the Council of State.

Mktvartvelo: Prime Minister Brdzeni Kvirkvelia visits Daito

The visit of Prime Minister Brdzeni Kvirkvelia to the Empire of Daito, the first official visit to the Ardian country by a government representative in more than two decades, has increased rumours about a visit by the Daitojin Emperor to the Free Autonomous Territory of Jugland, which could happen in the 75th anniversary of the Treaty of Nordheim.

However, Inga Ushkaladze has assured that the visit was centered on bilateral discussions regarding common interests between Mktvartvelo and Daito, and that such offer was not the aim of the diplomatic visit.

Although more than 30% of inhabitants are descendents from East Ardian settlers and immigrants, the issue seems to divide the local community. "Our nation needs to move toward a real sovereignty and self-determination", Erwyn Moen, leader of the Freedom Party declared. "Daito can only belong to the past and it is time to look to the future".

Merani Khashumi started the match with a high intensity which Tsraan Abakha struggled to balance, resulting the first quarter in a eight-point lead. However, the local team was able to overcame the situation, with a more evenly-matched second quarter and a more intense defense, ending the third quarter with a 55-52 square. SG Irakli Nakaidze, with 3 rebounds and 8 points in the third quarter, proved as the team leader to the delight of the local fans.

However, Merani Khashumi was able to break through their rival defense in the final quarter, particularly for the effort of an inspired Otar Gavasheli. The Mktvartvelian center, with 23 points and 13 rebounds proved key and Merani Khashumi could take a breath in the final minute as they increased the lead over their rivals. Zurab Tavdgiridze put the final 71-73 with a fabulous three-pointer when only a few seconds remained, but it was too late and Merani Khashumi achieved the title.

Merani Khashumi crowned as champions of the 2023 Mktvartvelo's Basketball League, as they did last season. While their consistency found some lapses during the regular season, they proved once again that in the difficult and defining moments, their quality and team discipline is difficult to match for most rivals, as they showed last Spring when they defeated KMK Kareledia to win the Mktvartvelo's National Basketball Cup.

"Our challenge can only increase", Merani Khashumi coach declared notwithstanding, aware they will face being the team to beat in 2024 once again.
