Her Excellency, President Seiko Kumoya of Josai

The Federation extends its warmest greetings to you and your people.

We do not believe in unnecessary contact with the outside world, for treachery is an opportunistic beast. However, as your people and mine share a close cultural link, we believe the relationship between the Republic of Josai and the Neo Quywe Federation is one to be nurtured. Regardless of your relationship with the loose remnants of our nation that came before, we extend a hand out to you.

It is our sincerest hope you take it, there is much to be accomplished together.

If you share this belief, and wish to turn mere cultural ties into a lasting relationship; we cordially invite you to the city of Myoudai. The Onyx Palace's doors are open and there is always a seat awaiting you.

Signed,
Brilliant Speaker Junko Kamaejikawa
Leader of the new Quywe people

Cescedia, Allied States of Ardia

Three in the morning, sleep deprived and strung up to the heavens on combat stimulants. A string of lights through the mist occasionally broke the pitch dark. High speed cargo trains running at all hours when civilization slept, it would hardly be surprising if nobody thought anything of them. This one was different. Different enough that the Neo Quywe Federation was willing to go after it, thousands and thousands of kilometers away from home. And that they did.

Perched atop a steel bridge overlooking the railways, covered head to toe in black civilian clothing and carrying recovered gang weapons with the serial #s missing; they waited. Galaxy Initiative, the poison dagger of the reclusive NQF. "Almost on the clock. Minimize witnesses." Eunbi muttered, her Vesian accent nigh unintelligible. She continued to monitor security footage through a bulletproof tablet, their mark approaching rapidly. "What's language protocol?" Mazatl beside her asked with a whisper. "Lodjan, let's make this interesting." Eunbi replied with an impish grin. "Enough talk, though. Hit that thermite charge now, they should stop right below us." She said, changing to Lodjan immediately.

"Turning up the heat... now." Seongmin radioed in. Off in the distance, down the railway track, a bright flash came and faded into a fire. Off to the other end, a sleek black train came into view, decelerating as it neared them. "It's time. Get on that train." Eunbi growled, cutting off comms. The black train slowed to a halt while crew members disembarked to go investigate the fire. Against the endless dark of the night, Galaxy rushed the train, clinging to the sides and roof.

Complaining to themselves in Latin, the Ardian crew boarded the train once more. As soon as the last man was back on board, the train accelerated back to speed, blasting by the burning crates. "I'll say when we're out of city limits, until then keep quiet."

Seeing a lone man walk into her reception area, a secretary stood up to greet him. "Welcome! Your business is...?" She inquired, consciously putting on a warm tone to her words. To come face down the Speaker and the Four Serpents was a nerve wracking experience, one she tried to alleviate. "Greetings! Masaharu Taera. New arrival." The man responded. She scanned him up and down, azure silk robes and an onyx cube hanging from his ear; unmistakably the Azure Dragon of Haruna. A sinking ship that the government wasn't willing to let the Dragon fall with. "Wonderful. Do note that only Grand General Hasaenori is present today."

Perhaps not being outnumbered five to one in the most important meeting of your career was a boon. Masaharu could only recall stories of those who had emotional breakdowns under the questioning of the 5 most important people in the entire federation; and how they promptly returned to their previous positions, doomed to remain outside the walls of the Temple of the Voice. "Thank you." He replied, breaking off conversation and continuing towards the ornate wooden doors of the Speaker's chamber.

The architecture on the other side of the door, it felt malicious in nature. He could feel himself retracing the steps of those who disgraced themselves in the past. Even without the piercing gaze of Honoka Tatsuhira to break his spirit, the walkway towards his podium was walled high. Like an arena to contain a fighter nobody expects to survive, the audience benches could see him from every possible angle regardless. On a towering podium beyond that, bearing the seal of the NQF Armed Forces; the Grand General watched his every step, smiling contently.

Without delay, he reached for a considerable sized stack of paper and dropped it down onto the podium. "Your Excellency. I am Masaharu Taera. Former Grand Administrator of Haruna and Joten-Kawari." The General grinned widely. "I know who you are. Azure Dragon. I will spare you the scrutiny of the usual questioning session." Masaharu cocked his brow in confusion. "Your Excellency, with nothing but the highest respect--"

Ianaha imitated covering her mouth with her hand, cutting him short. "Of course, of course. I'm aware of protocol, and I chose to break it. The Azure Dragon of Haruna is of great renown, and potentially of great use to me." Unnerved by her bluntness, Masaharu held his tongue. "I pulled many strings to get you in this chamber alone with me. It's not without reason." The General narrowed her eyes at him, the idle smirk she always carried became a wide grin.

"Let the secretary know I've rescheduled you, I will forge transcripts later. Double cross me after this, and you will be eating a bowl of salt at my feet." The General said, promptly returning to her removed demeanour. Hastily, Masaharu stowed his papers and made a formal exit. Blessing the name of the Grand General as he took his leave.

Without so much as a single question being asked besides his name, Masaharu Taera was now among the most powerful of Northern Ardia.

Ianaha traced her gaze idly across the room, even as a woman without a doubt bearing some kind of influence approached. She listened to what they had to say, the only giveaway that she was even paying attention being a small grin that formed as they spoke. "It's an auspicious day indeed. The great dragon of Quywe has come for all to see." She said, locking eyes with her, tilting her head to the side. She turned her head back towards the busy room as a Phoenix Guard approached; a noticeably toned Vesian woman wearing fashionably oversized spectacles. "Your drink." They said curtly, which Ianaha happily took.

"My journey..." She continued, smiling at nobody in particular. "The rain bears down heavily on Shidarekawa this time of year, it's nice to be away from it." Her eyes widened slightly in revelation as she took another pause in speaking. "Oh! Of course! Forgive me, I don't talk with people often. I am Grand General Ianaha Hasaenori, of the Neo Quywe Federation." She turned to face Jadwiga. Her clothing matched that of a General, bearing medals and markings appropriate. Her outward appearance lent itself more to a shut in, though.

Her dark hair reached down to her waist in the back, fixed up in a long braid. A lock of it also obscured her left eye at the front as it reached down to her shoulders. The Phoenix Guard walked off and disappeared into the crowd, no doubt still keeping an eye from a distance. "And you?" She asked, taking a sip from a tall glass. Like the Speaker and her fellow Serpents; Ianaha was undeniably quirky in the eyes of foreigners. Her mannerisms mimicked that of the Quywe nobles of old. Quiet, distant yet surprisingly affable.

Something as mundane as a Ball one country over had caused quite a stir in the Speaker's Palace. Coveted. Coveted! The ministers and advisers of the government couldn't stand to throw up the opportunity to make connections. The temptation of gaining influence in the government through the assistance for foreigners; whom seldom appeared before them. Not without going directly to the Speaker, at least. Even Bakkermaya, who had an immense stretch of border with the NQF was kept at arm's length. Bearing this in mind, the Speaker decided it was to be Grand General Ianaha Hasaenori who accompanied her, the First of the Four Serpents. Below only the Brilliant Speaker herself in power, wealth and influence.

The ambitions of the lower nobles meant they simply couldn't be trusted. But Ianaha had all she could ever want already. Accompanied each by a black suited bodyguard, the rather secretive Phoenix Guard. Casually, the pair greeted their Bakkermayan counterparts as they made entrance, before each splitting off in different directions, eager to find someone to talk with. Wearing a custom-tailored suit, designed to appease those foreign in both mindset and fashion sense; Junko approached the Seaforthians and gave them her greetings.

The Grand General merely kept to the sidelines and watched as the hall filled with those with important names and deep pockets.

Upon Junko's creation of a new government from the ashes of economic collapse, the Brilliant Speaker commissioned a train for use in diplomacy. Loaded up with enough expensive gadgets to keep someone else's VIPs entertained until they could be brought to nearest governmental palace. "I haven't seen those interns come back here since we left SDK." Muire remarked idly, watching hyperway nodes fly by along the rail, red LEDs and antennae guiding the train through Myouga's thick forests. "Doing a good job keeping King Lapu and the gang entertained I hope." Ohmura said, disinterested. "Fortunately I'm not on an internship to talk with people." He said, pulling a small curved knife from the inside of his glove before promptly sliding it back into place.

"Not a job I envy either, anyways, I'll go let them know we're close." Muire said, disappearing behind the door to the adjacent car. With a stiff, professional conduct, Muire appeared before King Lapu's delegation and the interns speaking with them. "Your Majesty." She announced to them curtly. "Please prepare to disembark. We are quickly approaching our stop."

The interns looked back and forth between each other and Muire in silence. "We are expecting rain." She began, opening a cabinet where everyone's coats were hanging. Quickly she shuffled them around, picking out King Lapu's and removing the plastic cover. "Your jacket, Your Majesty." She held the jacket out for Lapu to easily slip on.

Surrounded by men and women in all black suits, Junko sat patiently with an umbrella being held over her head for her. For today's meeting, she figured to don her best Himeyan-style dress. A bright crimson silk with complex patterns in gold and silver thread. The train's approach was her cue to tuck her phone away somewhere it couldn't be seen, and stand up to meet her guests.

King Lapu of Quintelia

When the ministers and advisers speak of making international contacts, Quintelia tends to be mentioned quite often. And hopefully with good reason. The Neo Quywe Federation as it stands maintains few connections to the outside world; as the issues of the greater Mundus political sphere are not ones the NQF takes interest in.

However, it is good to be on cordial terms with some.

Hence, we invite His Majesty King Lapu to the city of Rokkou in the NQF for what we believe will be a productive negotiation session.

Signed,
Brilliant Speaker Junko Kamaejikawa

"This is a no bandit zone, we make sure of that." Eunbi said coldly, still tracking Hetzein's movements through the end of her barrel. "Anyways, how the hell did you make it here if you're not a bandit?" Nagamasa inquired, lowering his own weapon slightly. "Sector 7 is a few kilometers ahead, but all we've seen come from this line are raiders."

"If he is a bandit after all, we have a hostage for when his friends show up. If not, the Director will probably want to speak to him anyways." Eunbi noted, peering up from her sights. "Take him back, more of us are coming." Nagamasa nodded and turned his back, motioning to Hetzein to follow with his head. "It's a security thing. We haven't encountered any friendly settlements." He said.

The Siege of Haruna

Spend shell casings, used tear gas canisters and two very noticeable blood stains on the pavement. This is Tenkuichi road in the Ikari-Togura district of Haruna, inside the reclusive Neo Quywe Federation. Here, a guerrilla war is being waged against the NQF police by heavily armed gangsters. During the transitional period between the former governments of the NQF and the Brilliant Speaker's new reign, law enforcement was being reformed entirely and what was left to pick up the pieces was entirely inept. Thus, smugglers took advantage and imported an estimated 300,000 illegal firearms into Himeyama, including approximately 90,000 fully automatic rifles and carbines. The majority of recovered weapons can be traced back to Tamora. When the transition was complete and new police forces marched into the cities, the ones moving into Haruna were met with an ambush. A firefight immediately broke out, and continues to echo throughout the city to this day.

An anonymous Police Enforcer has described the fighting as "insanity". "Every once in awhile we're tasked with supporting plainclothes cops, they usually tell us to bring full ballistic plating. When we hear that as a squad, we take time to sit down and pray, knowing it means someone has probably died out there." The Enforcer went on to comment on the political situation behind the Haruna siege. "Our captains, our deputies and even the colonel of the Haruna Civil Protection are working to make it safer for us. You can't just airstrike or send tanks into an urban center with 1.3 million people still living there. So we're trying to develop new tactics specifically to deal with Haruna."

Elsewhere in the city, one of Free Mundus' reporters was permitted access to a gang stronghold deep in the Hashiru-Okage district. An area that police are currently advised to avoid entirely due to the overwhelming gang presence. The reporter was driven into the stronghold blindfolded and was only permitted to remove it once he was sat down inside. Practically every member inside had an automatic carbine, and were wearing expensive boxing brands. "Haruna's always been this kind of place, except now everyone and their dog has a gun. It's not just the cops we're fighting, most of the fighting is still done between gangs. The police are just trying to slowly wipe out everything." One woman calling herself Hisae said. The reporter noted that nobody in the room appeared to be over 30.

"Drugs, extortion, contraband running. All that stuff from before is still going on. The police just don't have the means to stop it as easily now." The gangsters noted that they aren't intentionally attacking civilians, stating that they believe they're running their own neighbourhood watches on the communities in their territory. "I'd advise the police to stop sending men in. The East end may be safe for you, but we're untouchable over here. If you want Haruna back, you're paying in blood."

The NQF government has not yet responded to any Free Mundus inquiries.

Within the glass and stone halls of the Temple of the Voice, a war rages. Fought by ambitious nobles who have found their way back to power in the Neo Quywe Federation.

The Four Serpents, the elite ring of the NQF's leadership, just below the Speaker herself have noticed the efforts of an ambitious lieutenant. Masaharu Taera has found his place in the upper echelons of the NQF government, but as a young and cunning financial advisor, his ambitions reach toward the Speaker's seat.

In a place where everyone carries a dagger in their left hand, will Taera's ambition lead him to the power he seeks? Or is he doomed to fail in someone else's elaborate scheme?

Momiji's radio buzzed to life. "Remember to keep in contact. Negligence has consequences." The Director's emotionless voice warned. To which Momiji rolled her eyes. "Okay, we're heading to your coordinates now." With Eztli at the head of the pack, the volunteers continued through the urban maze Tinhil City.

As she sat, patiently taking notes, a man barged in. "Director!" He cried. "A scout has reported seeing someone in the southern tunnel system." Seemingly frustrated, she looked up. "Why am I being told about it? Hurry up and kill it." The man stared at her awkwardly. "No, I mean an actual person!" Bewildered, the Director stared him down. "From the southern tunnels?"

"Arunaya Express Line. One of our scouts is keeping an eye on them." The Director looked back down at her notes. "I see. Get someone to back them up. Then you may initiate contact with them." She said, waving the man away with a hand gesture. "Yes ma'am!"

"That's the guy?" Eunbi whispered, tracking a man with the barrel of her rifle. "It's him. I'm gonna flank him then we'll say something." Nagamasa whispered back. He watched Eunbi crawl up against a large pipe, watching the man from above in the poorly-lit scaffolding near the ceiling. Behind their back, Nagamasa shuffled behind a concrete barricade and took aim at the man. Eunbi made a gesture.

"You there. Freeze." He commanded, aiming at the man at center mass. "What are your intentions?" He asked. Eunbi came out of hiding, audibly cocking her weapon for the stranger to hear.

73
There was an uncomfortable silence. The Director shot around some dirty looks, knowing that was enough to make some people budge. A man stood up, one of those ex-military with nothing left to lose after the Fall. "That's half. If that strong don't volunteer, the weak will take their place." She said coldly. A couple more seconds passed, slowly enough to feel like an hour. "We'll go." A young man said, a trio of delinquent-types stood up. Typical Himeyan boxing hooligans. The director removed her glasses. "We have enough, unless anyone else wants to go with them."

Nobody else said a word, as though they'd all rather nail themselves to their chairs than climb up to the surface. "Right then, the rest of you, get out. You'll earn your keep in Sector 7 through other means." At once the crowd stood up and excused themselves as fast as they possibly could. "As for you six. We have only two firearms to spare, and a handful of bullets each. You." She pointed to Eztli, finger inches away from his face. "You're responsible for the rifle." She ordered, pointing to a 50 year old bolt-action in the corner. She then pointed to the middle-aged ex-soldier. "You take the pistol. The rest of you will be given knives."

"I expect all of these to be returned to me after you come back. Report to the surface elevator immediately." The Director waved them off, refusing to acknowledge them any longer. "Couldn't even bother telling us what's out there, could she?" The blonde delinquent muttered; the back of her jacket embroidered with a Quywe war chant in calligraphy. "The only thing I've seen up there are Phoenixes. Those big chicken looking things." The blonde groaned. "And we're supposed to just stab them to death?"

"Awful ballsy to even consider that. What're your names, by the way?" The soldier asked. "Momiji. These are Futaba and Seiji." The blonde said, pointing to her friends. "I don't think those two need an introduction." Momiji snarled, pointing at Eztli and Maeka. "I'm keeping your asses alive with this thing, you could at least be nice." Eztli shot back, chambering a round in a dramatic fashion. "We'll see about that on the surface."

Without another word, they stepped onto the surface elevator. The walls were covered in memorials to survivors killed since being driven underground, it wasn't a very optimistic scene, considering quite a few of them had been killed shortly after leaving that very elevator. As they reached the surface, they could see the skyline lit up with neon lights and giant LED screens, still perfectly functional despite being neglected for two years. Likewise the streets were filled with arcades, restaurants and gambling parlors with the doors open and the lights on. As though human civilization was merely taking a 15 minute break from existing.

"This shit creeps me out. Let's get after those scouts." Eztli announced, walking slowly down the vibrantly lit street.

The Neo Quywe Federation was to be something of a hermit kingdom under Brilliant Speaker Junko's reign, a move that some openly welcomed after the Nurashima flashpoint drew unwanted international attention. Though it was hardly wise to be without connections, hence Junko made her way to Lakhzovia to make one.

With two Lancers at her sides, Junko made her way inside the Presidential Palace, wearing a fashionable Vesian-style dress with a bob cut and spectacles, her hair fixed up with multiple ornaments while still looking relaxed. An unimposing and charming demeanour to at least make any first impressions favorable to her.

After quietly sliding through the crowd of VIPs, Junko spotted the re-elected Sachim Kadassa, and hastily went to meet him. Before saying anything, she eyed the people around her, trying to spot any other leaders, but they were absent at the moment.

"Your Excellency." Junko said with a smile and a bow, the Lancers beside her folding their left arm behind their backs and placing the right fist on the center of their chest in unison, the Neo Quywe Federation salute. "Congratulations on your victory."

Tinhil City, Arunaya Province, Neo Quywe Federation
May 28th, 2056

No such thing as a peaceful sleep, Eztli thought as the commotion around him stirred him awake. "All block 7-J residents, report to the meeting room immediately." the intercom called out again and again; 7-J was mostly able bodied young men and women, probably looking for volunteers to go to the surface again, Eztli assumed. He quickly fixed his thick black hair to the side and splashed his face with cold water. He quickly disengaged himself from the hanging hand mirror and joined the stream of people.

While the gathering of people from 7-J was almost a weekly occurrence, Eztli locked eyes with a few obvious foreigners while passing through the dark concrete halls. Recent additions to 7-J, the first in a long time. Probably crawled into Sector 7 from the almost entirely abandoned Tenzai tunnel that once linked Tinhil City to Himeyama's capital. Though Himeyan they obviously weren't.

The meeting room was always occupied with engineers and scientists. They used data and images displayed on the countless consoles to help brief whoever was unfortunate or ballsy enough to go up to the surface when something went wrong. If Sector 7's military trained expedition teams got into trouble, even with scavenged military equipment, someone had to go pick up after them, and the ones that did were considered disposable. "Listen up, 7-J. Expedition teams Shinzan and Tecolotl were sent out 72 hours ago to look for a shipment of computer parts spotted about a week ago, Shinzan returned an hour ago with casualties and Tecolotl was last heard from 12 hours ago about 45 blocks away from Maruba station." The emotionless director of sector 7, a short and slender Vesian woman in a lab coat carefully explained the details of the situation.

"We will be forming a provisional expedition team to search for Tecolotl, survivors or their remains and equipment. I need at least 6 volunteers or I will pick you out myself." The Director glared into the crowd of people who gathered. Eztli sighed and stepped forward through the crowd, muttering among themselves. As a reservist trained for recon missions in the NQF armed forces before the Fall, he figured if someone had to go, he'd rather take the place of someone less adept. The Director gave a simple grunt to acknowledge his existence and turned her attention back to everyone else.

Mere seconds later a second pair of feet stepped up onto the elevated metal platform. Eztli looked back, and to his surprise, the introverted Maeka Ashikaga was now standing behind him, eyeing the director up and down. Maeka volunteering took Eztli by surprise, the daughter of a famous UTCT officer by the name of Yua, rarely even left her tent except to eat and exercise with a communal weight set. She was quiet. But Eztli had saw her fight before, fast, aggressive, efficient, if a bit spiteful; Eztli figured to avoid her, in case the stress of being on the surface caused her to snap on someone.

Unknown Dawn revolves around Sector 7, an underground tunnel complex once used as part of the Tinhil City metro in the Neo Quywe Federation. Following a catastrophic event known as The Fall on April 16th, 2054, the world's governments have gone dark, either destroyed or in hiding; and most of the world's population was overrun and killed by an unknown, primal invader in a matter of hours. Whoever is left is desperately trying to pick up the pieces and figure out just what happened that day, but their numbers are only shrinking.

Sector 7's ice cold director believes she has a solution to bring back humanity from the edge of extinction at the hands of its mysterious scourge.

NQF Border Shootout with Suiseikawa Defense Force Leaves 20 Dead

NQF troops push towards the border checkpoint near Otono, a town that straddles the border between independent Suiseikawa province and NQF-controlled Myouga province.

Tensions in the Himeyan Divide have reached a new high this morning as NQF and SDF troops clashed in a seemingly unprovoked firefight. The Suiseikawa government was quick to confirm that the shootout had taken place as many Suiseikawa troops had pointed out that NQF forces had reportedly opened fire at random at approximately 6:21 E.A.S. Regional politicians were quick to call off hostilities and all gunfire had ceased by 7:00 E.A.S, though as the numbers show, the damage had already been done.

The SDF reported 14 of their own men had been killed in the firefight, with 38 more being wounded in a statement made at noon. They also placed estimated NQF casualties at 6 killed and 9 wounded, as the NQF has yet to release any official figures. Brilliant Speaker Junko is expected to make a press statement later today however.

Meanwhile, the Suiseikawa government is looking into the possibility that the NQF deliberately opened fire. Ishiga-Ryōkan will provide updates as the aftermath of this event unfolds.

"Lancer Tsubaki Maera, 814th Light Battalion?" the officer quizzically called out into a formation of uniformed veterans, patiently waiting outside the NQF governmental airliner. "The hell are you doing about to attend an international function with the Brilliant Speaker herself?" his eyes locked onto her as she stepped up before him. "CO said some of us would be hand-picked to serve as ceremonial guards, sir. I don't get paid enough to know why."

"I guess I don't either, your unit was deployed as a strike force during the Myodai Insurgency, Lancer?" "Yes, sir." "Sounds more fun than this. I don't envy you."

"Tsubaki, was it? I surely hope it wasn't too much trouble to have been pulled from your post." Speaker Junko said with a thin smile. "Not at all, Your Highness." Tsubaki responded stiffly, hopelessly unfamiliar with the formalities beyond which the HADS, and later the NQF Army taught her, which to say was merely standing at attention and ending every statement and answer with ", Sir." It put her in a place where she could neither concentrate on doing her job or try to forget about it.

"I'm glad to hear." Junko's voice was dainty and smooth, though something about it didn't quite sit right with Tsubaki, it had almost the opposite effect of being soothing to her. Maybe she was the one out of place here, she thought. Perhaps it was the idea of being on a plane without a carbine and a parachute, not having somewhere to be 10 kilometers below; though she still had a fleeting suspicion the Speaker simply wasn't a person to get comfortable around.

With the Rokkenjimans having finished their greetings, the Speaker approached Emperor Peter with a proud stride, Tsubaki to her right and a carefully arranged formation of veterans, young and old behind her. "Your Majesty, I've heard many things about you." Junko said with enthusiasm, to which Tsubaki and the other veterans behind her raised their left fist into the air, the salute of the NQF.

Emperor Azurewind,

For the first time ever, the Neo Quywe Federation can look forward to honouring our fallen as a single, strong nation.

My attendance, as well as that of many veterans from Himekuno, Ahkabnil and Cojotan who fought in the Mhorish Sea Campaign is to be expected.

Signed,

Junko Kamaejikawa
Speaker of the Neo Quywe Federation

NQF Threatens War with Tsuyariko and Suiseikawa

NQF special forces stationed on the border with the Independent Republic of Tsuyariko have been conducting training exercises simulating an aggressive invasion of the now independent Himeyan provinces.

The governments of Suiseikawa and Tsuyariko today have been warned by Speaker Junko, head of state for the Neo Quywe Federation, that "continued non-compliance will lead only to war." This lengthy ultimatum comes after both states have spoken of their intentions to ensure their continued independence from the NQF.

When the former states of Ahkabnil and Cojotan earlier this year rallied together in the face of rapid economic collapse, the provinces of Myouga and Shuko in Himeyama were quick to join with their own civil order quickly disintegrating. Mere months after the Neo Quywe Federation formed, they already had their sights set on the remaining provinces of Himeyama, who had voted against joining the NQF and opted for independence instead.

All three states have begun rapid militarization and the government of Tsuyariko has warned citizens living on the Tsuyariko-NQF border to be prepared to evacuate at any moment, and advises everyone else to stay clear entirely.

"Hungry?" the man asked with an amused smirk. Veasna turned her head towards him, slightly embarrassed. "A little, a few weeks' travel on foot does that to you!" she exclaimed, turning her head back to look at the vendor at work preparing her meal. With just a quick glance at her face and the tall headdress she wore, the man could immediately where she was from, even if most people outside the immediate area of Ridyamat did not know such a place even existed. "Let me guess, Tyrridian?" he inquired between swigs of ale. "I am Tazir, by the way."

Veasna turned back to him, stifling a sly little grin. "That's right, you're better read than most here. Call me Veasna" she chuckled. "You know, I can only imagine one reason a Tyrridian would come as far as Sybos. You're one of those researchers, aren't you?" he asked, slowly figuring out who this girl was simply by judging the way she answered her questions. Something seemed different about her; she was very good at veiling the truth, even for a Ridayati.

"Ah, yes actually. Plenty of people around Tyrridia aren't even aware Sybos exists; it's up to me to make sure they know now." Veasna said with an excited smile, slamming her notebook down on the table and quickly sketching down bits and pieces of the city, even a hasty portrait of Tazir himself. "I see." he replied, trying to get a closer look at the pages she'd sketched. "If you really want to take some notes on the flora and fauna of this place, the Guild here has been rallying people from across the world. Naturally don't think word would reach Tyrridia, but since you're here, maybe you'd want to take a look?"

Veasna's wandering eyes locked onto his. "What does this guild do? I'm not here long-term you know, I'm not just going to join something to leave right away." He smiled, without a doubt piquing her interest. "Didn't say it had to be long-term, the Guild takes in adventurers and sends them off to hunt fauna once in awhile, you don't look like a hunter type, but you are a mage, aren't you?"

"Ah, no actually. I'm just a scholar." Veasna turned her head away in embarrassment. Tazir raised an eyebrow, he could tell she wasn't lying, but it wasn't entirely the truth either, 'just a scholar' wouldn't ring so many bells in his head. "Eh, I'm sure they'll have use for you, bet they'll even let you study the remains if they like you enough."

Her eyes lit up. "Really!? After I eat, let's go have a look!" she squealed with excitement. "Sure, you might want to find a place to get settled after though." Tazir said, grinning. The two continued conversing while Veasna cleaned off her plate, then made their way to the Guild Tower.

For the first time since setting foot outside of the Galtai monastery, Veasna had found comfort. The dense foliage surrounding the lake and narrow river that fed into it had shielded her from the vicious sun that clawed and bit at her from dawn to dusk in a way that her tall, ornate headdress she had never taken off in public could not. After shamelessly gorging herself on the fruits and clean water offered by the oasis, she had spent the rest of the evening excitedly documenting the journey and all she encountered, to the point where she had used half the pages in her leatherbound notepad.

That morning, with a pack once again heavy with supplies, Veasna marched on towards Sybos, with a renewed dignity that she had been bled dry of during the long and perilous walk in the desert.

When she finally arrived before the towering walls of Sybos, Veasna had been forced into a most undesirable position: standing and waiting. The queue of men awaiting entrance to the city via one of the many guarded entrances had wrapped around the wall a considerable length; most of them from parts of the world unknown to the Ridyati. Their bright pink complexion no doubt brought on by the scorching heat in what she assumed were otherwise pale skinned adventurers. Her own skin in comparison, had gone from a slightly pale tan to a reddish light brown.

As the line shrunk to less than a dozen people in front of her, Veasna considered how to answer the questions the soldiers at the gate had asked each and every person. The Ridyati had a common practice of lying to strangers, especially those outside their monasteries. To seek so much as a name would quickly turn into a duel of wits as a pair of Ridyati attempted to outsmart one another. It wasn't as though they had anything to gain through lying, it was a simple matter of keeping sharp wits to the Ridyati, whom believed there was a time and place for honesty.

"Next." the soldier finally called, prompting Veasna to step forward slightly. "Show your weapons." he casually said. Veasna unsheathed a small, broad dagger with a jewel-encrusted hilt. "Where is your homeland?" he continued in a uniform manner. "Beyond the Meklos Ravine to the east." Veasna answered without a moment's hesitation, it was the truth, though there was little between Sybos and the Meklos Ravine worth mentioning.

The soldier raised an eyebrow. "You look like a Tyrridian." he probed, taking note of Veasna's dark skin and broad cheekbones. "Smart man." she replied with a smirk. He looked back down at his book and resumed taking notes. "Right. On your way, dark one. Don't think about starting trouble, you've a face I can remember."

Immediately after entering Sybos, Veasna was shocked by the sheer volume of people beyond the walls. It was an endless stream of people entering and exiting the stone buildings and crawling up and down the roads, some old, some young, some armed to the teeth. Feeling out of place, she quickly stripped out of the baggy white cloth that protected her from the heat and tied them around her waist, over the sleeveless, fitted blue and purple robe she had quietly slipped on before entering the queue to the city.

As she ventured into the depths of Sybos, Veasna had pushed and shoved her way past leisurely shoppers and persistent hagglers, attempting to stop her again and again, shoving strange currency in her face in hopes of taking her dagger, headdress or even the silk robe back to their stalls. She quickened her pace when she spotted a couple particular stalls with steam and smoke rising from them. It seems she had missed eating a substantial meal more than she realized.

Quickly taking a table occupied by another single adventurer in the middle of the road, she enthusiastically ordered a massive platter of barbecued meat and exceptionally pungent curry. Only after the lady behind the stall repeatedly acknowledged her request did Veasna turn back to make eye contact with the young man sat at the table with her.
