BACKGROUND
The history of Eyrifjordur, as the country is also known, began with the settlement by explorers from Albion and Alba Karinya, in the 13th century. Eyrifjordur was still uninhabited, unlike most of Coft Aranye. The country obtained independence in 1818. After the constitutional convention of 1843, a monarchy was established and the country was renamed as the Northern Kingdom. Ulrik Vandenburg, also known as Ulrik I the Wise, became King the next year and the Vandenburg Dinasty was established, and the country expanded to southern lands. After being invaded and occupied for a few years in late 19th century, Eyrifjordur regained independence in 1901, under a second dinasty. After the 1904 political crisis, the country was split and the Republic of Narthaur (originally the United States of Narthaur) was established. In 1911, King Konrad III abdicated, and the Northern Kingdom would be abolished in 1914. The Eyrifjorduric Federation would be established in 1918, unifying the Republic of Narthaur with the former territories of the Northern Kingdom, following the approval of the Constitution of Eyrifjordur in early 1918.
Since then, the Eyrifjorduric Federation has remained as a confederation of several territories, of which Narthaur (where is located the capital city of the federation) remains the largest and most populated one. The federal government is mostly on charge of trade, defense, and foreign policy, as every territory retains their own constitution, parliament, and regional government.

Political system of the Eyrifjorduric Federation
The Eyrifjorduric Federation is a parliamentary federal republic. The federal legislative power is vested in the two chambers of the Federal Council: the National Assembly and the Senate. The Eyrifjorduric Council holds the executive power and is composed of eight power-sharing Ministers elected by the Federal Council. The judicial branch is headed by the Eyrifjorduric Supreme Court, whose judges are elected by the Senate.
The competences of the Eyrifjorduric Federation (federal government) are limited to trade policy, national defense, and foreign policy. Regional and local politics vary in the different member states and federal subjects, which may have different political systems.
The Eyrifjorduric Council
The Eyrifjorduric Council is the eight-member executive council which constitutes the federal government of the Eyrifjorduric Federation and serves as the collective head of government of Eyrifjordur.
While the entire council is responsible for leading the federal administration of the federation, each Minister heads one of the seven federal executive departments. The position of President of the Eyrifjorduric Council is usually held by the eldest and most senior member of the federal government. The constitution establishes that there shall be at least one minister per member state or federal subject (excluding the Protectorate of Tsevdarsvaedy. The federal government is often a coalition of the main political parties, each party having a number of ministers that roughly reflects its share of electorate and representation in the federal parliament.
The constitution establishes that any elected official (from either chamber of the federal parliament, or from any national, regional or local parliament of any of the member states of the federation) is eligible to be a member of the Eyrifjorduric Council. Each Federal Miniser heads a federal government department, although they are not only responsible for their own department, but also for the conduct of the federal government as a whole.
The President of the Eyrifjorduric Council
The President of the Eyrifjorduric Council (sometimes unofficially known as President of the Eyrifjorduric Federation as well) has almost no powers over and above his or her six colleagues, but undertakes representative functions normally performed by a head of state or prime minister. It is a rather ceremonial position, which is often granted to the eldest or most senior member of the Eyrifjorduric Council.
The President of the Eyrifjorduric Council is the highest-ranking Eyrifjorduric official. In urgent situations where a Council decision cannot be made in time, he is empowered to act on behalf of the whole federal government. Apart from that, though, he is a primus inter pares, having no power above and beyond the other seven Ministers. Besides his role as president of the council, he also heads a ministry or department, as the rest of his colleagues.
The President of the Eyrifjorduric Council, however, is not officially the head of state, as this function is carried out by the Council in its entirety. However, very often, the President acts and is recognized as head of state while conducting official visits abroad, although very often visits abroad are carried out by the Minister who is head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Federal Council
The Eyrifjorduric Federation has a bicameral parliament called the Federal Council, which is composed by:
- the National Assembly: 133 seats, also known as the Lower House.
- the Senate: 17 seats, also known as the Upper House.
The Federal Council convenes to elect the members of the Eyrifjorduric Council. Members of both houses serve for 5 years and only serve as members of parliament part-time.
Political parties
In contrast with the political party systems of many nations, Eyrifjorduric political parties at the federal level are often only loosely connected with parties at the regional level. One exception is the National Democratic Party, which is organizationally integrated with most of its provincial counterparts in a highly centralized organization.
