The Return of Ambassadors
« on: October 15, 2020, 12:57:09 PM »

Almost a decade ago the weakness of the Priesthood at that time and the niavity of my cousin, Queen Cassandra, allowed a handful of corrupt generals and other senior offices to usurp the authority of the government and impose on the Realm of Cassiopeia an eight year period of isolation. These dark days saw foreign diplomats expelled from the nation save for a select few. As such there now exists no embassies in our nation and this is something we wish to put right. In days of antiquity an ambassador from foreign lands was granted great respect and their arrival in the realm was a time of celebration and welcoming. I see their return as being exactly that today thousands of years later.

With this all said I therefore invite all nations of Mundus to come to the Queen's Complex in our capital province on the 24th October and install a new ambassador for their nation. Currently former embassies are being reacquired, repaired and refurbished to permit them to once more take their rightful place in our capital of Golgagra. I look forward to personally welcoming the new ambassadors, their families and any other official from your nation that wishes to attend.

On behalf of the Kingdom of East Moreland I would like to accept your invitation and Lady Rochelle Forbes will be appointed as ambassador to the Realm of Cassiopeia. This shall be Lady Rochelle's first appointment as an ambassador in her own right however I am confident that she will be an outstanding representative of our Kingdom and that she will be eager to work with your nation. To accompany her for her first month I have asked one of our nations most respected diplomatic figures,  Tim Carpenter to help mentor her. I hope this is to your satisfaction and look forward to visiting your nation soon in person if given the oppurtunity.

The Empire of Paracambi looks forward to re-establishing an embassy in your nation.

We shall be sending Curtis Wayne as our ambassador. He is a seasoned member of the Imperial Civil Service and has spent the last five years as an assistant to the ambassador of the Commonwealth of the Iwi so we believe he has a good understanding of the eastern part of Ardia, an experience we hope will be useful despite the cultural differences. We hope that Your Majesty and Mr.Wayne can cultivate an excellent relationship.

On behalf of the Holy Empire of Achkaerin and her people I accept your invitation. Our appointed ambassador will be Andrew Richmond a man who has spent many years working in the political world, he and his family shall be in attendance at your gathering. Mr Richmond's present employment being what it is does require that he serve out a notice period this lasting until December this year so for the immediate short term the position of Achkaerin's ambassador to Cassiopeia shall be taken up by my niece Sakura Sheppard, she has more than enough experience to adequately manage the responsibility until Mr Richmond takes over, she also looks forward to meeting you and establishing a multi-layered lasting friendship between our peoples and nations.

In friendship

Her Celestial Majesty Queen Atalanta II,

The Izhitsan Provisional Government would like to accept your invitation, and congratulate you on your decision to open your country to the world stage. As Kamil Turenovo, Izhitsa's previous ambassador to Cassiopeia, passed away several years ago, the Foreign Ministry has appointed Lubor Yelinek, his former assistant, to the position. We hope that this is to your satisfaction and look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with your nation.

The Unified Tribes of Waddan would be honoured to accept your offer of establishing an embassy within your nation. In the last year or so we have begun our own diplomatic rebirth and see this as an excellent oppurtunity. We shall dispatch Maalik Hakim as our ambassador shortly and we hope t begin building relations with you in the near future.

Your Majesty,

It is with pleasure that the Parliament of Kopsje receives your invitation. Though our country has been something of a minor note on the international stage, the new decade is an open path that may lead to many avenues. In this Kopsje would be delighted to establish relations with the Realm of Cassiopeia and, by the will of the Parliament, has appointed Kubatbek Otunbayev as our Ambassador. May this be start of new and everlasting mutual relationship.

To her Celestial Highness, Queen Atalanta II, eternal health and prosperity be upon you.

It is my pleasure to have received your request, which has henceforth been approved by my cabinet. It has been a shame that, for the last eight years, both our nations isolated themselves from the world, but it is my hope and the hope of many within my administration that we can bring this to an end. Ishen willing, these efforts will hopefully be a success.

I will personally attend the event alongside the cabinet's pick for the office of Ambassador to Cassiopeia, Arkan Shirai. Likewise, we anticipate the continuation of services by your own embassy as it were eight years ago. If, however, you see fit to use a new structure, please inform us so that we can make the necessary arrangements.

Regards,
Ashot Ekhral, Prime Minister of Ikhan

To:- Monsieur le Directeur des Affaires Diplomatiques et Commerciales Monsieur Alexandre Marc Michel Debeauson,

We regret to inform you that the Realm of Cassiopeia does not recognize the authority of any outside agency over our nation. Therefore when international agreements are giving organisations such as international tribunals or courts the right to impose conditions upon our nation we shall not be a member. Therefore as the agreement which you cite sanctions the authority of an outside body we can not agree to it.

In terms of our embassies we will go on record as stating that we agree to the following key points.

1. The territory of an embassy remains under the legal jurisdiction of the Realm of Cassiopeia however appointed people from the nation it belongs to may enjoy immunity should their Head of State request it.
2. Registered staff based at an embassy are free to come and go without molestation.
3. No steps will be taken to disrupt the workings of any embassy.
4. Communications from and to embassies will be afforded privacy.
5. Representatives of the Realm may not enter the embassy without permission from the ambassador.
6. Embassies may appoint individuals from their own armed forces to provide protection however the Realm retain the right to post their own security at the embassies perimeter.

We hope these terms are acceptable and do not prevent you from opening an embassy here.

Dear Queen Atalanta II

My own nation has experienced a period of instability by those who would wish evil upon us. We ourselves loss many embassies across Mundus and would welcome a chance to reopen one. We therefore will send Anne Tamm to represent our nation. I look forward to her sending her first reports.

Best Regards

With the upcoming expected return of ambassadors to my Realm I am delighted to have received so many responses. With the appointed day for their arrival and celebration at hand we thought it sensible to produce a list of those ambassadors who will be, following the conclusion of the event in our Realm, heading to your respective nation. While we are excited to send ambassadors to your nation please keep in mind that following close to a decade of a corrupt military junta running our nation much of our diplomatic corps was disbanded. It is my hope to rebuild this with those who I am confident will be energetically engaged with both your own governments and their local community. As a result many of them may appear inexperienced however with a strong support team I am certain they will be a credit to my Realm and a asset in diplomacy between us. We are all looking forward to welcoming you in two days time.

We have attached to this message details of the ambassadors we have appointed so far however these are subject to change until the 24th October.

Autumn in the Realm was a joy to behold. The hot dry summers were giving way to cooler days with splashes of rain. The scruffy rough brown grasses that grew in the countryside were now refreshed by infrequent but hearty drinks of rain as autumn showers rejuvenated everything. While the leaves may be progressing from green to brown the grass was heading the other way. It was the perfect time for lengthy walks around the Complex of the Queen, a sprawling maze of rooms, offices and suites that the Celestial Family called home. Now was the "Golden Hour" that time of day that Queen Atalanta II loved this time of year. The sun was beginning its climb to the heavens and had just poked its head above the horizon to greet the day causings its rays to extend out towards where the Queen now sat enjoying the spectacle from the rooftop terrace of her own suite. The sun began to illuminate the pure white series of buildings off to the Queen's right where the Complex of the Gods sat, the spiritual and governmental centres of the nation within a lovely stroll of each other. Some days the Queen would begin the day by walking down the Celestial Way, a white stone road linking the venues, to offer her prayers at whichever God the day specified she honour. She sipped her black coffee as she took in the morning light that never failed to warm her soul.

"Arise oh bright sun, at the Dawn of the Day,
Enlighten the path now ahead of my way,
Praise to Apollo, oh Lord of my Life,
For thee and thy blessing I always will strife.

The new day you grant us as gracious gift,
I relish thy sunlight now soaring so swift.
Discard, Oh Apollo the Shadows of Night,
Deliver to us thy benevolent Light!

So hail to Apollon this morning anew,
As thou risest above heavenly blue,
Of all that is good the herald thou art,
Awaken the light anew in mine heart."

She had been made to learn the poem by her own mother, as had all her siblings, and now the words seemed particularly significant. By now the sun had assumed its full ball shape and the warmth was making the morning dew on the grass into a mist now as it began its evaporation that probably tomorrow would make a shower to refresh the grass once more. Life was stirring now below her as the Complex began to spring to life. The white painted buildings ringed with a single band of colour just below their roof seemed to the unaccustomed a haphazard maze of buildings a testiment to nearly 2000 or so years worth of building, destruction, rebuilding and expansion. Atalanta wasn't entirely sure how many rooms the Complex had but between those above ground and below she had once been told that through its buildings, estates and farmland around 18,000 people were employed here. To her it was like an extended family and even though she was a Manolas she had no issue sharing her home with three other families known as Celestial, the Metaxas, Floros and Andreas families helping swell the representation of the bloodline tracing back to Poseidon and Andromeda's affair.

"Good morning Your Majesty" a call came from the square below, one of many that existed at the Complex. The voice belonged to Tagmatarchis[1]  Dimos Michelakis one of the group of soldiers known as the Argyraspides who were tasked with overseeing the security of sites like the Complex of the Queen. He had been a young officer when the Military Junta took over and immediately headed off to Aosta to avoid serving it. He had returned three years later and worked gathering evidence of the Junta's atrocities hoping to get information out to those who could perhaps take action. "I trust you're prepared?"

"Of course Dimos" the Queen called down, "I thought it only proper to meet the new ambassadors in a fluffy dressing gown and my hair a mess." She responded causing the pair to share a laugh. "I shall be though, just enjoying the calm before the storm.....so to speak." Dimos bowed and headed off, no doubt checking on his own men positioned around the Complex on various duties. The Queen took the exchange as her time to actually get herself ready and so reluctantly headed back indoors to subject herself to preparation, first a brisk shower followed by allowing one of her maids to sort her hair out and then the black flowing sleaveless dress tied about the middle with a belt designed to look like it was wound from strands of golden rope. Atop her head was the crown of the Queen. She knew it was not as grand as some she had seen of other monarchs but the simple gold coloured laurel wreath was dignified in its simplicity and she liked that. Several strategically placed hair pins held it in place among her hair worn up. She thanked her maids and then headed out into the plaza below. As happened most mornings there was the smart tap of four feet coming to attention as the Argyraspides guardsman for the day snapped to attention. The Queen stood in the centre of a hollow square made by them. "Good Morning gentleman" she glanced around checking who was there. "Nikos" she addressed one of the soldiers, the youngest of the Argyraspides, a 23 year old called Nikos Kontos who was among the newest of the men assigned to her security. "I trust your mother's better?" He had returned form a week away visiting his mother who had managed to fall out of an orange tree.

"She's well thank you Your Majesty. She just won't be climbing trees for a while." The Queen had sent her flowers and a get well soon card and had called for prayers to be said at the Temple of Apollo on her behalf. "She is making you a batch of Portokali to say thank you. I must warn Your Majesty she makes it rather on the strong side."

"Good" The Queen responded, "No point drinking Portokali unless you get drunk, and tell her she need not have troubled herself." The Queen had the belief if these men were going to be the ones to protect her then she needed to look after them in return and she was rather happier when surrounded by them. She herself had served in the Navy and was proud of her service. Had it not been for the omens naming her Queen she would probably have had her own ship by now and so the connection she had with the military was strong.

As the Queen made her way to the Central Plaza which sat beneath the throne room various cars carrying the guests were arriving. In a nod to the special occasion the cars were permitted to drive down the Celestial Way, the huge Complex of the Gods on their left as they made the final turn on the 30minute or so journey from the airport. As each car stopped a member of the Navy provided an escort to the where the throne room was located. It was up a set of 30 rather steep stairs and was rather less grand than the name probably suggested. Once you crested the final step a platform with a kind of white marble building that although appearing to be perhaps three stories high was just one with super high ceilings. Two narrow doorways lead inside each with a heavy oak door which today with the nice weather was pushed open. Windows to the left and right allowed light to shine in and illuminate a huge mural that sat behind a simple wooden throne. The mural displayed the scene of the God Poseidon raising Cassiopeia to Mount Olympus to live among the Gods, a reminder of the nations mythological past. For today Aristeidis Michelakos, the Queen's brother-in-law, was serving as a kind of usher, checking the names of those arriving off and preparing them for the occasion.

As the first person arrived and was escorted through the complex with no hope of finding their way out unaided the Naval officer handed them over the Aristeidis. "Its wonderful to meet you." The greying man with a bright black beard extended a hand. "Its tradition that an ambassador present themselves to the Queen, I'm not sure if your nation still do such things but it was customary long ago to have credentials to present......I'm not sure if you still do but that is of lesser concern than you simply being here." He seemed nervous, he hoped that the more of these he did the smoother his spiel would become. He was charged with organising formal events in the Complex and his paperwork was far more confident than his presentation here today. "I'll give you the nod." He demonstrated what a nod looked like as though it was some revelation to the guest. "And then please ascend the steps......you can manage can't you. Gods we didn't consider that." He was concerned now, what if someone in a wheel chair turned up? It was too late now and he hoped to Zeus everyone could manage the 30 steps up and down. "Once your up there go in through the left door, it brings good fortune. Introduce yourself to the Queen, if you have credentials to present then please do so. The Queen will then present you with the regalia of an ambassador here, don't worry its only if you ever select to get involved in any of our many ceremonial events." He turned and took from an aide a bronze laurel wreath very similar to the Queens, "Here the Queen wears a gold one, members of the Celestial Family silver and our nobility and ambassadors bronze ones." He let the guest examine it and then returned it to the aide. "Once you've the wreath then pop back down and once everyone's been through we can have a drink together and perhaps I can introduce you to who we are sending over to your nation, be a good chance for them to get some inside information perhaps." His explanation done he climbed the steps himself, he wondered how many times that day he would be up and down these. At the top he briefly explained to the Queen who was below as she was unsighted and then theatrically nodded down to the waiting ambassador and anyone else with them.

Queen Atalanta II waited for them to appear and stood to greet them. Once inside the building she waited for them to approach and formally introduce themselves and hand over any credentials. "I am honoured as Queen of Cassiopeia to welcome you to my realm. As a descendant of Poiseidan I hope the seas are kind to your homeland. I am delighted to accept you as an ambassador to my realm and hopefully a friend to our people." She took the bronze wreath and gently placed it on the new ambassador's head. "I look forward to speaking with you more later and once again please relay my thanks to your government for allowing us this oppurtunity." The Queen waited for the first person to descend before turning to Nikos Kontos who was stood to the left of her throne. "How do you think that went?" she asked giving a sigh of relief.

"Smooth Your Majesty....very smooth." He replied his eyes kept to the front as they awaited the next person to arrive.

It had been many years now since Tim Carpenter had been on any diplomatic missions as he'd confined himself over the last year or so to the Freestone Abolition Society (FAS). He had missed this and as his old friend Jekar kept telling him when they spoke he was wasting his time with FAS and should focus on uniting Mundus. He suspected the grizzled scar covered warrior of Helus would at least be happy he was back doing the God's work. It was though rather odd as Lady Rochelle Forbes was older than him but the visible nerves would have made you think she was much younger.

"Hey, don't worry" Tim wrapped a protective arm around her as they passed the Complex of the Gods. He'd spent the last few weeks getting to know the noble lady and rather liked her, she was someone who spoke her mind rather freely and yet was happy to sit in the background taking everything in. "These Cassiopeains don't have anything too weird tradition wise. I mean they aren't the Maori where they throw sticks at you and stuff, and they aren't the Lodjains who throw salt in your face." Tim had visited a lot of nations in his life and had fond memories of most, Dartfordia was an exception of course as they still had his skateboard.

"I know" She gulped a little as they turned into the Complex of the Queen. "It's just today will be fine because I've got you to keep me on track, tomorrow though what on Mundus do I do?" As the car came to a stop she checked her small thin rapier was secure and exited the car her dark black business suit almost matching Tim's, if anything she was surprised he was actually wearing shoes and not skate shoes. Tim offered his arm as they headed through the Complex but Rochelle shook her head slightly, she wanted to present herself as independent in a way and being clung to the arm of someone was not the way to do that. They listened carefully to the instructions of Aristeidis Michelakos. "I think we'll be just fine thank you sir." Rochelle wasn't sure what to address Michelakos as but hoped she hadn't offended him. When his nod came she climbed the steps and noticed as they reached the top Tim held back allowing her to proceed in the lead. "Your Majesty" Rochelle bowed to the Queen before taking from her pocket a creamy coloured envelope with a big red wax seal attached to it. "His Majesty King David III of East Moreland sends his greetings and has issued me with these credentials." She handed the envelope over to allow the Queen to do what she needed to do with them. "I have with me today Mr.Tim Carpenter, as a new ambassador His Majesty thought I may need some guidance on my first day in the job."

"Your Majesty" Tim bowed and then presented a gift. "My King has made something of a tradition of attending coronations in person and believes that any monarch can learn from the past. He often therefore likes to present new monarchs with a gift of some sort of book. While he understands the reasons for your own coronation being held with little foreign involvement he hopes you would accept a late coronation gift." The King had sent Tim with a book on the myths of Alba Karinya written in the 17th Century. Its leather case was now dark with age and its pages though preserved well had gone beige in colour. Their official bit done the duo bowed again, backed away and descended the steps to allow the others[1] to make their own ascent.

"Well that went well and I got a pretty tiara" Rochelle took the wreath off and examined it feeling rather proud.

"For the love of Helus don't call it that around them." Tim rolled his eyes, "Keep it on.....it looks good." Tim said as he positioned it on her head.

"Is she up for this? Does she think this is a joke?" Jekar asked Tim over Rochelle's shoulder. "Send me someone to unite Mundus and I get some clown."

"It'll be fine." Tim said as he locked eyes with Jekar.

"What?" Rochelle wondered what Carpenter had just said.

Tim's eyes snapped back to the new ambassador. "Oh.." he stammered a little, "I said that looks fine." he stepped back as though examining the fit of the replaced laurel wreath.

The notion of ambassadorial duty was something that was fairly commonplace among the Achkaerinese nobility - Emalet Silvermist in Lodja, Rosa Ayanami in Bakkermaya, William Amberbrook in Paracambi and Amy Alleine in the Iwi to name just a handful of them. Sakura Sheppard, being the niece of the Emperor wasn't really the usual choice for such a posting as ambassador but this was a short term posting for her until the man that they were posting had served out his notice over at the CTO. It was quite amusing for her to consider that given her relatively young age she stood as the most experienced diplomat in the Achkaerinese delegation. Sakura had a broad smile on her face as she observed Tim Carpenter, it was good to see the man back on the circuit as it were, they'd worked together on a fair few occasions and it was probably silly but Sakura never went on any diplomatic visit or duty without a letter written to her by Tim's brother. As for Achkaerin's actual ambassador to Cassiopeia that was eventually going to be the honor of Andrew Richmond, the experienced political figure and while he'd still be in Rokkenjima for a few weeks his wife Judith would be overseeing the embassy's reopening when she wasn't investigating schools for their younger daughter Vicky and universities for their older daughter Tara.

When the Morelander's had descended the steps Sakura led the Richmonds up the steps, flashing a friendly smile at Tim as their paths crossed, they politely and respectfully bowed to the Queen. "Your Majesty." Sakura said "I'm Sakura Sheppard I'm the temporary Achkaerinese ambassador to your nation, this is Andrew Richmond he will be the ambassador once he's served out his notice period at his current job. These are the credentials given to us" she handed over a piece of paper wrapped in a gold ribbon that bore the Royal Seal.

"Your Majesty." Andrew said "May I introduce my wife Judith and our daughters Tara and Vicky." he indicated each of them in turn "We're very much looking forward to getting to know your nation."

"Also." Sakura said "My Uncle the Emperor wanted me to present you with this." she presented the Queen with a cherry wood box with a gold plate on it inscribed with the date and "To Her Celestial Majesty Queen Atalanta II in friendship from His Imperial Majesty Emperor Peter Azurewind on behalf of the people of the Holy Empire of Achkaerin." inside the box was a fine cut glass chess set, the Emperor had a fair few quirks when it came to presents, the box also contained a more informal letter of greeting from the Emperor. With that done the Achkaerinese group headed back down the steps.

With the first three ambassadors seen the Queen felt a little less nervous now. What she hadn't expected though was people bringing gifts. The presentation of the wreath was not a present to the ambassadors as it was a sign of their rank as an ambassador. While Atalanta had no intention of enforcing the old tradition of wearing the wreath on ceremonial days she hoped that perhaps these new residents of her Realm would indulge in the custom.  She made sure though to thank each of them for the gift and wondered exactly what she would do with them all.  The Morelanders book would naturally go into the library here in the complex as one of many "Honoured Books", these were rare editions or beautifully made versions of books common across the realm, the works of old philosophers, early scientists, playwrights and now one given to them by the King of East Moreland. The Achkaerin chess set was indeed beautiful and while she knew how to play she hadn't played a game since her time in the navy when it was one of the ways of whiling away the boredom on their long voyages. She did remember though losing quiet often, perhaps like the Morelander book this could find a special place in the library and allow the more skilled chess players in the Complex of the Queen to enjoy the craftsmanship. The gifts from Fleur were easier to work out their future. The necklace, which she took from the box and made a show of examining it before carefully replacing it, she would make a note that if ever to host someone from Fleur or even visit there the necklace must be worn. As for the wine it would sit in her private cellar awaiting a chance to share it with someone from the host nation. As the third set of ambassadors had vacated the steps she waited for the next person to arrive.

Meanwhile at the foot of the steps each of the newly accepted ambassadors found themselves being approached.

Carpenter and  Lady Rochelle Forbes were approached by a rather stern faced blonde woman. A smart white suit decorated only with a pair of small gold aviators wings pinned onto the lapel. "Good Morning, I am Angeliki Papadimitriou" she extended a hand first to Rochelle and then Tim. "I'll in essence be swapping with you. In two days time I'm heading to East Moreland. I wonder Mr.Carpenter if I may ask a favour. You see I'm an ex-member of our Air Force" she pointed to the wings with a sense of pride, "Naturally I've heard a great deal about EMAC and their heritage. I was wondering if perhaps you knew whether they'd be willing to give me a tour of their facilities. Maybe even let me have a flight in a prototype or two." She cracked a smile momentarily almost confirming that it was a rare event.

Diomidis Pachis was a reasonably tall man and softly spoken meaning it nearly always sounded like he was whispering. He approached the Achkaerin delegation. "Good Morning" he gave a small bowing gesture before extending a hand to Sakura first, "Congratulations on your position although I understand that you won't be here that long. I do hope though in that time you'll explore a great deal." He turned next to Judith and her daughters, "If I am not mistaken you will be the future Ambassadors family." He extended a gentle hand to each of them. "I am sure your family will find the nation an exciting one. A time of rebuilding and a time of us kind of rediscovering ourselves. I hope you'll soon consider this a home."

It had been nine years since Amalia Andreas had used French on a regular basis but she hoped her grasp hadn't slipped too much. "Welcome to the Complex of the Queen." she first extended a hand to Maréchal who was holding the wreath, "Congratulations on your appointment." She turned to Debeauson next, "Thank you for coming" she nodded respectfully. "While I know you'll be taking up a building in the city itself I do hope you'll take some time to get to know the Complex here, its a rather interesting place just try and not get lost." She had played many games of hide and seek here as a child that had gone on hours as the sprawling mass of buildings spread out across the landscape creating alleyways and hiding holes. "It may look like someone simply plonked all the buildings down wherever they fell but apparently it was all carefully placed to allow Hoplites to defend the place like a fortress." She gave a shrug of her shoulders as though she wasn't sure she believed such a thing herself. "Do you have any plans for your stay at all?" She asked Maréchal as she watched her distant cousin the Queen wait for any others to arrive.

"For some reason, I don't think this was exactly supposed to happen," Dame Theodora Martin commented dryly to her personal assistant.  The newly-minted Tytorian Ambassador to Cassiopeia had been in a car accident five years ago while she was in the House of Commons, and the experience had left her paralyzed from the waist down.  This, of course, meant that even the couple dozen or so steps she now needed to climb were for all intents and purposes insurmountable.  She knew, of course, that neither the Cassiopeians nor her own government had anticipated such a sudden and obvious liability in a new ambassador.  That said, Martin half suspected (almost in spite of herself) that her appointment had been the equivalent of a diversity hire.  This was probably errant nonsense; Martin had known Prime Minister Thatcher at least in a professional sense for the better part of two decades, and the older woman had never struck her as the sort to make decisions based on what looked good.  Besides, Martin actually spoke relatively fluent Greek -- sure, it was both rusty and a somewhat archaic dialect, due to the fact that she had studied it as a university student, but it was still there.  That fact alone made her more qualified than the majority of the diplomatic corps; most aspiring Tytorian diplomats studied languages like Rokkenjiman, Latin, or Parthian.

Of course, none of this changed the fact that Theodora Rebekah Martin (née Evans), age 54, Dame Commander of the Order of the Cross, former Member of Parliament for Oakwood Downs, Doctor of Political Science, honorary Professor of International Relations at the University of Decapolis, and newly appointed Tytorian Ambassador to the Realm of Cassiopeia, was confined to a wheelchair and could not climb stairs.

With no obvious recourse, Martin gazed somewhat hopelessly at the door she was expected to use at the top of the steps.  She toyed briefly with the idea of sending her personal assistant or one of her aides up in her place.  She even fantasized momentarily about having the lot of them hoist her up the stairs as if her wheelchair was some sort of perverted throne (a horrifying mental image, in her view).  She finally came to the conclusion that the Cassiopeians were sure to be able to figure out a solution to this predicament without it devolving into either the hopeless bedlam she thought most likely or the horrible faux pas she so desperately feared.  So it was decided; she would wait and see what happened next.  The whole decision-making process took Ambassador Martin all of three seconds.

The situation was one that the Cassiopeians hoped hadn't presented itself but naturally there were precidents for such a thing. Not only was the throne room used to greet new ambassadors historically it had also been used for presenting military decorations and various other awards or honours. The simple and most significant point of the ceremony was that the Queen stood higher than others, a symbol of two things the first being her authority in the realm exceeded all others and the other being that was descended from the adultorous affairs between the God of the Sea, Posiedon and Andromeda and thus she was a descendant of the divine. On several occasions soldiers who had been left limbless in battle had attended ceremonies here at the Complex and with legs missing, spines mangled or various other injuries that prevented them making the steep ascent an alternative had long been established. While the fussing Aristeidis Michelakos had focused on ensuring the smooth timing of the day he had neglected investigating the ceremony, however Atalanta had not and so having been informed of Dame Theodora's arrival the Queen stood from her throne and descended the steps until standing on the penultimate one at which point the guardsman at the foot of the steps took a knee thus ensuring that they would stand no higher than their Queen during the ceremony. The steps being rather shallow in their depth it meant that she could easily reach Dame Theodora and place the bronze wreath on her head. The next words had been pre practiced several times by now but their proclamation was just as important this time as it was the first time. "I am honoured as Queen of Cassiopeia to welcome you to my realm. As a descendant of Poiseidan I hope the seas are kind to your homeland. I am delighted to accept you as an ambassador to my realm and hopefully a friend to our people. I look forward to speaking with you more later and once again please relay my thanks to your government for allowing us this oppurtunity." With that she turned and took a step back up towards the summit and almost instantly the soldiers regained their full height. As the Queen continued her ascent Dame Theodora was approached by a smartly dressed young man.

"Dame Theodora" the man bowed slightly. He was wearing a blue pin striped suit with no tie but the bronze wreath on his head symbolised he was a member of the   nobility here in the Realm. "My name is Vangelis, I'm the Duke of Skepari and looking forward to heading to Tytor as our ambassador." he explained, "I was wondering whether you could give me some sound advice on what life in the capital is like?"

The Arashin delegation, headed by Prime Minister Ekhral and Ambassador Shirai, was certainly late, though not something in their control due to a delay resulting from poor weather. As the Akhan A72 passed over the Feltasi mountains towards Cassiopeia, it was clear that the day would be rather busy for both of them. Nonetheless, upon landing, it would be at least a few minutes before the passengers would leave, giving them an opportunity to speak.
"Ready the big day?" Ashot asked Arkan, looking out the window; Neither of them had the pleasure of visiting Cassiopeia, Ashot due to his schedule and Arkan because he had been posted in Fleur beforehand.
"Sir, with all due respect, if I weren't ready, I wouldn't be here." Arkan pointed, his eyes glancing throughout the cabin as several agents of the Esat began to secure the area around the plane, all the while other members of the Prime Minister's staff made final arrangements for the day. "That said, I will admit that I am a bit nervous."
"Don't worry about it. I was nervous in the leadup to taking office, y'know." Ashot said with a nod before turning to Arkan. "If it helps, imagine you're to a friend. Relax, and you'll make it through in one piece." He said with a shrug. "At least, that helped me whenever I've gone overseas."
"It's just... I dunno if I'm ready. If I'm the right person for the job." The ambassador sighed. "I mean, I'll do my best, but I know I can't handle everything."
"That's how it should be. You aren't alone in this, after all. After all, an ambassador cannot do his job without his staff nor the country hosting him." Prime Minister Ekhral said before getting up, having been informed that they could leave the aircraft. "In any case, it's showtime." He said, and so they departed the aircraft.

Lubor Yelinek felt almost fearful, driving through a country that had been foreign to him for so many years. Yet, at the same time, it was the safest he'd felt in over a decade. For once, the only thing he had to fear was a diplomatic faux pas. Still, he felt it was odd that he had been sent alone, with even one of the men from the foreign ministry there to correct him. The words that communist one had said, what was his name, Ondrevich[/i], that's right, kept ringing through his head. "Remember, you're there on behalf of United Izhitsa. Not Yach, not Izhitska Ednota, but the nation. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise." And Bartolomey Hatsek just stood there and nodded! Once the lion of the Izhitsan diplomatic service, now standing in agreement with the leftists! Well, a leftist, anyway. Perhaps that was the difference. In any case, it made the advice that much more sobering.

He left the car, his family following behind him, and proceeded toward the steps. Oh, the steps. He'd forgotten about those. Granted, it had been many years since he'd last seen them, and stairs hadn't been as much of a problem in those days. Well, it was time to show off the good old Izhitsan fortitude. He'd had many years to learn the odd hobble that allowed him to ascend stairs without disturbing too much the point where his knee met his wooden leg. And these little things barely counted as stairs.

He bowed slightly before the queen. After a bit of prodding from his wife, his family did as well. "Greetings, Your Majesty," he said, in somewhat accented Greek. "I'm deeply honored to be invited to represent the Federation of Izhitsa. I'm sure that we will find our nations have much more in common than the casual observer might realise. Oh, and may I introduce my wife, Linda, and our sons, Petr and Jirzhi." He gave the boys a little nudge. They bowed again. "Greetings, your majesty," they said, in nearly incomprehensible Greek. Yelinek beamed.
