Terrorist Bombing in Northwest

Late last night a car bomb was detonated outside of a courthouse in the city if Hinsida, capital of northwestern Grand Principality of the same name. Authorities have stated that the bomb was "crude" & "unstable", and had been placed in a delivery van which the perpetrators parked in front of the courthouse. Hinsida's Chief of Police Chai'at Chai'at Mali referred to the attack as "heinous" and an "undeniable attempt to kill innocent civilians" and that those who perpetrated the attack have "no concern in their minds for the people of Hinsida." Chai'at also added that the police had received a warning and had managed to evacuate the area; at present there are no reports of any injuries. The police currently have 2 unidentified men in custody, but have so far declined to release any information regarding their identities. However the police have stated that they believe the attack to have been perpetuated by local minority Nationalists. The Sorrow was a period of rebellion & civil war that lasted from roughly 1963-1976 between Imperial loyalists, Communist rebels, & Nationalist minorities. And while the war ended decades ago tensions still remain & there are several Nationalist terrorist groups that remain in the hinterlands of the Empire.

Millipedes Delay Trains Outside Bawpxm

After several days of abnormally heavy rain, thousands of millipedes have been sighted on railways outside of the city of Bawpxm. This has resulted in the trains being delayed as alternative routes are worked out & labourers work to remove the millipedes from the track. The millipedes typically dwell in wet detritus on the forest floor and are known to swarm after periods of heavy rain. Which can prove dangerous when they swarm on or near railways as the viscera from thousands of crushed millipedes can interfere in a trains ability to brake properly. In mid-2007 two trains collided and injured 21 people due to a millipede swarm. The current delays are not expected to last any longer than a few hours, and are not expected to have any major lasting impact.

Princess Kanda Opens New Homeless Shelter

Her Imperial Highness Tantasatityanon Thikhamphorn Kanda, daughter of HIH Grand Princess Tantasatityanon Thikhamphorn Songsuda and granddaughter of our esteemed Empress, has funded the opening of a new homeless shelter in the city of Bangein. The Princess is well known for supporting & funding a large number of charities in Kinkhnland, though most have been concentrated in the Grand Principality of Bawpxm governed by her mother. Bangein, however, is located within Kinkhnland's capital province and has been suffering from a homeless epidemic since the turn of the century, and attempts by the local government have done little to alleviate the problem. When asked why she wished to expand outside her mother's land the Princess said that she has "already done so much for the people of Bawpxm but as a daughter of the Imperial family it is my duty, and my desire, to assist my Kinkhn sisters & brothers wherever they might live." Princess Kanda has grown to be incredibly popular in Bawpxm not only due to her open funding of various charitable institutions but for her active volunteering as well; near a decade ago on the Princess' 16th birthday she made headlines by spending most of the day volunteering at a soup kitchen and instead of throwing a lavish party donating the funds for it to charity.

[PENDING REWRITE]

Culture of Kinkhnland

The culture of the Kinkhn people is a rather unique one on Mundus, and their culture is a source of great pride among most Kinkhn. Despite attempts to 'westernise' in the late 19th century and the increasing globalization of the modern day, the Kinkhn have managed to keep their unique culture alive and comparatively free of foreign influence into the modern era. However some might claim this was achieved in part thanks to the fostering of xenophobic and reactionary attitudes as well as draconian 'cultural preservation' laws; a statement not without merit. Certain scholars believe that there is no Kinkhn identity but rather several peoples who all fall under the umbrella of 'Kinkhn', however efforts at forging a national identity since the Empire's foundation have been widely successful. In modern times the vast majority of citizens identify with a singular Kinkhn identity despite the continuing existence of regional dialects and local customs & traditions. The exception to this are the various ethnic minorities in the nation; they were distinct peoples from the Kinkhns even before the existence of a unified Kinkhn identity, and were not subsumed into the national identity.

Gender Roles

Traditional Kinkhn culture has been referred to as one of the most matriarchal cultures on Mundus, something which it very rightly deserves. In simply terms the Kinkhns believe that whilst men are the stronger sex that women are the more intelligent. But beyond this men are lustful, violent, and dimwitted by nature and in the Kinkhn worldview this makes them unfit for leading or decision making, controlled as they are by their baser instincts. Women are the only ones allowed to hold positions of power in the government and the eldest woman is generally the head of the household. This stark dichotomy also manifests itself in the celebration of the feminine and the denigration of the masculine. Motherhood is considered extremely important in Kinkhn culture; the Empress herself is often viewed in the lens of a Mother of the Nation, who takes care of and rules her subjects as if they were her metaphorical children. Conversely fatherhood holds little importance; historically fathers had little say in their child's upbringing with the primary male role model being the child's maternal uncles. While this has changed into the modern day and fathers more often raise their own children, they are still considered second in importance the child's mother. Men also have to deal with the cultural expectation that they control themselves their inherent nature and to show subservience to their mothers then their wives. As a former Empress once famously said "Men are the body of the nation, but it is the women who are the nation's mind & soul".

Ancestor Worship

Among the Kinkhns family is of the utmost importance; it is expected that one place the needs of the family above the needs of the individual. Many even consider the Kinkhn nation itself to be akin to a giant, extended family and believe that it should be treated as such. Nowhere is this reference no obvious than in Kinkhn religion for the native Kinkhn religion, known as Laththi Brrphburuss (a phrase roughly translating to Ancestor Cults). The religion is based around the veneration of the spirits of the dead as well as the worship of deified ancestors. The faith has far too many gods to list as the vast majority of them are heavily regional & localized, with only a small handful being worshiped across the Empire. And all deities of this faith were, according to legend, once living breathing human being who ascended to the status of Gods upon their death. The only exception to this rule is the Allmother who birthed the world and all within it, but while she is an important being in the cosmology of the faith there is little active worship of her. The most common of these ancestral deities are the guardian deities, those who serve as the protector and patron of a family, place, people, etc. There are all manner of guardian deities and some have more than one; a family might worship both its founding member and a powerful & prestigious member as guardian deities. Whilst there is officially a codified method for determining whether or not an individual has ascended to godhood after death, in practice all it takes is for enough people to believe the person has become a god and to worship them as such.

In terms of priests the closest thing Laththi Brrphburuss has would the Hmxphi, more commonly known in English as shamans. They are women, and only women, who the faithful believe are able to achieve contact with and relay messages from the spirits of the deceased with the assistance of certain psychoactive plants. Any woman is able to undertake the training to become a shaman, though most claim to have received dreams or signs pointing them to becoming a shaman. The training itself takes years of tutelage underneath another full-shaman, and there is no standardized practice and what exactly it entails can vary greatly from region to region. Shamans also have several traditional responsibilities, such as taking part in various cultural rites to the upkeep of the shrines to local guardian deities.

Cannibalism

Perhaps the most famous, though some might say infamous, cultural practice of the Kinkhns is their casual attitudes towards that most forbidden of taboos: human cannibalism. Cannibalism is not merely an act that the Kinkhns tolerate, but one which they wholeheartedly accept and many practice on a regular basis. Kinkhn cannibalism has its origin in their funerary rites, which consisted of the consumption of the deceased's flesh both as a sign of respect & to assist their soul in passing on. But what began as a simple funeral rite has transformed itself into a corporate endeavor. In the modern era it is not uncommon for individuals to sell the rights to their corpse to a corporation (excepting a small portion of the flesh to be used in the funeral), and after the funeral is finished the company will take possession of the corpse and butcher it, selling the various pieces off to other companies to be turned into finished products. For the person's body is not just used for its meat; the meat & blood are turned into foodstuffs, the blood & bone are often used to create organic fertilizer, bones are often used in various crafts, etc. This is a phenomenon mostly found in urban & suburban populations however; in more rural regions the funeral typically involves the consumption of the entire corpse and the rest of the body is broken down and used by the community itself, as opposed to being sold for monetary gain. It does, however, bear mentioning that whilst cannibalism is completely acceptable the fact remains that not everyone sells their corpse & one cannot farm human beings, and because of this human meat and other human-based products are generally considered luxurious as opposed to everyday.

While cannibalism is not a taboo in and of itself like in most cultures across Mundus, there does remain several very important taboos regarding the practice in Kinkhn culture. The first is the consumption of the brain; the brain is traditional considered to be a gathering point of spiritual impurities in the body, and as a result eating the brains of a human being is strictly prohibited. The second is the consumption of those who died of disease; the body is considered impure & unfit for consumption and in these cases are traditionally cremated. Many anthropologists agree that these taboos came about in ancient Kinkhn culture as precautions against sickness resulting from their funerary rites; the brain taboo in particularly is often believed to be the result of the increased risk of prion diseases such as kuru associated with the consumption of brain & spinal nerve tissue. The third major taboo is against the consumption, in any part, of a still-living human being. The Kinkhn have just as great a taboo against eating another person as the rest of Mundus, however they believe that once a person has died and their soul has left their body that what remains is not a person. What remains is a mound of meat & bone & blood no different from the carcass of an animal. Even if the body part has been separated from the living person, it is still a part of them and thus part of a person. While this might seem needlessly pedantic to outsiders it is a very important distinction to the Kinkhns, and saying that they eat people is considered to be a grave insult.

Division between the sexes because of the strict matriarchy of Kinkhn culture; division between the ethnic Kinkhn and the ethnic minorities treated as second-class citizens; division between the wealthy, industrialized coast and the poor & undeveloped hinterlands; and of course, division between the wealthy and the poor.

Diplomacy and Events / Re: The Faejeon Queen
« on: October 14, 2019, 11:07:54 PM »
The attendees from Oltremaria were both looking forward to their visit to Awhaele, albeit for very different reasons. The Marchioness was looking forward to enjoying yet another visit abroad, and the fact that it was entirely on the Kingdom's budget made it all the sweeter. Meanwhile her daughter was exciting to be attending such an important event in a foreign nation and was proud that she was one of the people who'd be representing her nation to the Faejeon. She was so excited, in fact, that her mother Eleonora didn't have the heart to tell her how little this visit mattered to anyone back home. Awhaele was insignificant and irrelevant to Oltremaria's interests as far as the Oltremarian ruling class saw it, and King Stefano likely only arranged this visit as a concession to the many Princes who wished for Oltremaria to take a more active role in international politics.

When the delegation arrived at the palace there were three of them: two women who appeared to be in their mid-40s and a much taller woman in her 20s. One of the older women very obviously trailed behind the pair as they made their way towards the assembled Guild Member, but stepped forward when they arrived. She gestured first to the older woman, who was incredibly short and dressed in brilliant blue, "Please, allow me to introduce Her Grace Princess Eleonora d'Avvocati, Marchioness of Transardano." The Marchioness curtsied before the woman gestured to younger woman, who despite only being 'tall' absolutely towered over the Marchioness, "And allow me to introduce Her Illustriousness Archcountess Aloisia d'Avvocati, Archcountess and Heiress-Presumptive of Transardano." Aloisia also curtsied as the woman stepped back behind the mother-daughter pair without another word; she was simply the Marchioness' herald, and despite being a close & long-time personal friend of the Marchioness, she didn't warrant an introduction at an event such as this.

"It is an absolute pleasure to be visiting your island, Your Holiness," Eleonora said, a confident smile on her face, "It is a pleasure to meet you, and I cannot wait to meet the young Queen-to-be."

Aloisia nodded her head in agreement, "It is an honour to have been invited to such a prestigious and important event for you and your people."

The Kel Twareg Confederation

Motto:- God Aids the Willing

BACKGROUND

Kel Twareg (officially the Kel Twareg Confederation) is a nation in western Midaranye bordering the Empire of Tamora in the East. The various Twareg peoples have made their homes in the Tenere Desert that makes up most of the country for since their migration there in the 4-5th centuries, however the establishment of the modern dates back only to the early 19th century. Prior to that the Twaregs lived as a nomadic people, known for their goat herding, raiding, and trade caravans across the harsh sands. The Kel Twareg Confederation was founded by Mahamadou ag Geda, who united the Twareg clans and lead a war to conquer Kel Denneg, a Twareg confederation that had been conquered by the Tamoran Empire decades earlier.

Kel Twareg is a relatively sparsely populated nation, home to only 12,000,000 people. Twareg rulers have attempted to modernize the country throughout its existence but have been hampered by the comparative lack of population & capital, the isolation of its population centers, the harsh terrain of the nation, and the heavily traditional views of those living outside the rare urban areas. While the number has been decreasing in modern times, nearly a third of the Twareg population still leads a nomadic or seminomadic lifestyle. And furthermore traditional clan and family ties are still the basis for much of Twareg society, although this is breaking down in the urban population.

Government Type:- Absolute Monarchy
Population:- ~12,000,000
Capital City:- Tintasift (1,400,000)
Demonym:- Twareg

ECONOMY

Currency:- Twareg Dinar
GDP per Capita:- $5,000,000
Unemployment Rate:- 2.6%
Main Industries:- Mining & Agriculture

PEOPLE

The people of Kel Twareg are a people who are simultaneously both staunchly united and bitterly divided. Though small minority groups exist the majority of the population consists of those would identify as ethnic Twaregs, who are united by a common nomadic heritage, Christian religion, and related family of languages. But Twareg society is divided into a total of 39 clans spread across the nation who identify with one another to a greater degree than to other Twareg from outside of their clan.  Beyond this Twareg society is also traditionally stratified into endogamous castes that exist as followed: the free castes of the nobles (imakhagan), herdsmen (imghad), & artisans (inadan) as well as the slave and serf castes (bellah & izeggaghan, respectively). Slavery and serfdom has been illegal since the mid-80s, however in less developed regions the practices continue unabated. In the urban centres of the nation many of the more traditional practices have begun to break down; for example castes were traditionally endogamous (marriage was between members of the same caste) but this restriction has been lessened or even outright ignored more and more in modern times. However residential areas and even businesses in some cities are still segregated by Clan, not by law or statute but simply by tradition.

The faith of the Twareg people is an interesting one which its practitioners claim as Christian but which has been widely decried by other denominations as heretical at best and heathenry at worst. This is due in large part to it having radically separated from mainline Christianity in the first few centuries of the religions existence. It is known outside the nation as Revelationist Christianity (or simply Revelationism) but it is officially the Most Holy & Apostolic Church of Christ. Though there are numerous minor doctrinal differences the major deviations are as such: they believe that the Gods of the Old & New Testament were two separate entities, and that the Old Testament god was an evil entity and thus that the material world is inherently evil and in opposition to the spiritual; that the Serpent in the Garden of Eden was not a deceiver but an agent sent by the true God to guide Adam & Eve towards the wisdom and knowledge that could free them; and that while Christ was the Son of God he was not the last prophet and that further truths will be revealed by future prophets (this belief gave birth to their common name of Revelationists).

Ethnicity:- Twareg
Languages:- Twareg Languages (Tafaghist, Tamahaq, Tamasheq, Tamajeq, Tawellemmet)
Religions:- Revelationist Christianity
Average Life Expectancy:- 70

Prince Allan was pleasantly surprised by the arrival of the Bakkermayans as it was always lovely meeting new people. "Well Duchess Rhiannon and Mr. Morris, it's great to meet you," he said with a smile, pocketing the business and primptly forgetting about its existence.

"A pleasure," Voryn added with a solemn nod.

"Well, to be honest we're here for much the same reason you are: enjoying the festival and meeting King David; so far it looks like it'll be a fun time for everyone. But, no. I haven't actually met King David before. He attended my niece's enthronement and I'm sure we were introduced at some point, but I had other things on my mind that night," Allan said with a shrug, grinning as he remembered that night. It'd been quite wonderful, even if he'd had to deal with his Aunt chewing him out the next morning for having the audacity to take a widowed noblewoman to bed.

Voryn sighed as he saw his uncle in his short reverie, then focused his attention on the Bakkermayan pair, "We were on our way to say hello to King David at present. But we are not on a strict schedule, so it would be a pleasure to accompany you and be accompanied whilst we all see what the Festival has to offer."

"Yeah, gonna be honest I'm not 100% on what all is even here this year," Allan said with a shrug, "I am, however, 100% sure that I want to find something to eat first. So yeah, come along if you want."

Much of it was more the result of polite expectations, but there were those assembled for whom it was genuine as Nyx was the first to so publicly express such sentiments while not at the same time being one of the hegemonic world powers. Ælirn herself didn't necessarily agree with all the points Natarx had made; as far as the Empress was concerned Tamora and Slava Lavosk's crimes weren't attempting to become a 'player' but rampant human rights abuses and the jeopardizing of the planet's nuclear disarmament efforts. But regardless of that she found herself thankful that Natrax put forward such a strong sentiment in her closing lines; Ælirn wouldn't have blamed her had she gone with something a little more non-committal but her words were the exact opposite. But after the speeches were done and the applause died down came the boring part: meeting people.

One by one prominent Xæthoons made their way forward, had their names and titles stated by Ælirn's herald, and then greeted the delegates and offered well-wished for future relations before moving on to the next. It started off with members of the Imperial family: dour Crown Princess Llyri, young and smiling Prince Allan, silver-haired and one-legged Princess Næxyn. Then came the Cabinet members. Then lesser, but still important, government officials, members of the nobility, and some high-ranking military officers. Many of the statements were obviously rehearsed but only a handful seemed outright insincere. Though one individual, a ginger-haired woman tall and lean with a hawkish nose and dressed in an Army uniform who was introduced as Colonel Ilra xy Aphxara, was far more enthusiastic than most. She grinned as she expressed her hopes for peace and friendship between their nations and a desire to potentially work alongside her counterparts in Nyx.

But eventually the people stopped coming and for that Ælirn was grateful. Standing around and just meeting people exhausted her and she was happy that she could finally get away from this crowd, for now came a private luncheon with the Nythymn delegates. The Empress knew how important state visits like this were, but it was unreal how much she had to sit through just to talk to the people she invited into her country. As a servant lead her and the Nythymn out of the Throne Room Ælirn noticed her herald standing off to the side, looking rather tired. It wasn't difficult for Ælirn to realise why; she hadn't been doing this very long and that was a lot of people to remember. After all, the young woman couldn't look at her cheat sheet after every single person presented. Ælirn wanted to say something reassuring, but she wasn't sure if it would be appropriate. She fussed it over in her mind until the group had nearly passed her, and when she saw her chance slipping away Ælirn made a snap decision and took a few steps toward her. "You did great out there," she said in her native tongue, forcing a smile.

The herald's eyes went wide and she nodded vigorously before replying back in kind, "Oh, thank you Your Majesty! You're too kind."

Then Ælirn returned to the group; the exchange had only taken a scant few seconds and so the group hadn't advanced very far at all. And so the group was lead to a private dining room in the Palace with a large window overlooking the river. It was a beautiful view with the sun sparkling off the water and the Temple of Sun visible on its hill in the distance. The table was currently empty save for several bowls of water and soaps and it was rather short and lacking in chairs. Instead there were a number of large and comfortable cushions placed upon the ground, which the servant motioned for them all to sit upon. The servant waited a short moment to speak as it was now that another guest arrived: the Empress' great aunt Princess Næxyn. She took her place on the cushion beside the Empress, quickly removing her prosthetic leg so that she could take a more comfortable position and setting her cane upon the ground.

"We can retrieve silverware for any of our esteemed guests who desire it, otherwise if you would please rinse your hands in the bowls in front of you," the servant said politely. Once the Nythymn had replied and the servant left Næxyn spoke up before Ælirn had a chance to "So, Ascendant Natrax. How is your arm?"

Four Tamoran Tourists in Custody

Last night the Zyrva Police Force released news that four tourists have been taken into custody after illegal narcotics were found in the hotel room where the group has been staying. Two nights ago police in Zyrva were alerted to a man wandering the streets in a state of delirium, who attacked police upon their arrival on the scene. The man was quickly subdued and taken into custody, upon which small amount of marijuana were discovered in his person. With this information the police found the hotel where the man was staying with three other Tamoran tourists, upon which the police searched their hotel rooms. There the police discovered illegal narcotics in their rooms; predominantly marijuana but also small amounts of LSD and red-hued crystal methamphetamine as well as several Datura seeds. At present the first tourist remains under observation in the hospital and the names of the tourists in custody have not been made public, however the Zyrva Police Force is taking steps to contact the proper Tamoran authorities to inform their families of the current situation.

Typically the charges for a first offense such as this would be a steep fine and expulsion from the country, however the possession of the Datura seeds increases the severity of the crime immensely. The local species of Datura has been used in certain religious rituals and ceremonies for centuries and as such is considered to be sacred by law, increasing the potential severity of the punishment up to and including jail time. Such incidents are, while not a common occurrence, also neither rare nor unheard of. Numerous tourists have come to Xæth and, upon hearing about the psychoactive properties of the local plant, wish to acquire samples for recreational usage. However not only is this illegal by Xæthoon law but also exceptionally dangerous as the Datura plant, unknown to many of these tourists, is also highly poisonous. Local priests have over a millennia of knowledge and collective experience in administering the plant safely, something which these tourists lack. And in addition the plants used ritualistically are typically of varieties bred over the centuries to reduce their toxicity which are tightly controlled by the Temple, and so most illegally acquired Datura is harvested from the more toxic wild varieties of the plant.

Temple of the Sun Undergoing Repairs

The Grand Temple of the Sun in the capital city of Jiloola will, starting next week, being undergoing scheduled repairs to it's southern staircase. The Temple began construction in the mid 1300s and took several decades to complete, owing to the size of the structure. Standing over 300ft tall the Temple would remain the tallest structure in the country for several centuries after it was completed. The structure endures as one of the most recognizable icons of the Xæthoon faith and so the Imperial government places great importance on keeping the temple in working order, which is an ever ongoing battle due to its advanced age. Routine inspections of the temple last month noticed several potential issues in regards to the structural integrity of the southern staircase, and a more recent and detailed inspection determined that there were major repairs necessary. While the staircase was not in any "imminent danger of collapse" according to one inspector, several large sections will need to be removed and replaced for the staircase to meet safety standards once again. No expected date of completion has been provided, however the repairs are expected to take "several months at least".

National Integrity and Unity League Responds to Criticisms

Following Assemblywoman Ixidala Naxar's scathing criticism of the National Integrity and Unity League's continued silence on the matter of the Assemblymen protesting Her Imperial Majesty Ælirn XIX's 'Three People's Edict' last week, prominent members of the party have finally released a statement. They claim that the actions of the protesting Assembly members are "well within their rights as distinguished members of the National Assembly" and that "the League does not condone nor condemn their actions; these protests are representative of the Assemblymen's views and they do not at present conflict nor align with those of the League". Ixidala Naxar and those Traditionalist members of the Assembly which support her are expected to make a statement within the next few days. However Assemblywoman Yla xy Laxka of the far-right Golden Legion released a statement only a few hours after the League's leadership, decrying the League as "corrupt and morally bankrupt" and "willing to spit upon the very traditions they claim to represent" as well as referring to them as 'traitors' and stating that she would not be surprised if they were "whores to foreign powers, intentionally weakening our government from the inside". There have yet to be any responses to her comments.

The drive was an uneventful one as the cars easily made their way through the city; the streets had been closed off for the delegation to come through so they suffered no delay. The cars themselves were jet black and the car housing the Crown Princess had an open top, which she used to her advantage by politely smiling and waving when at the people who had gathered along the streets. Some of them came to get a look at a member of the Imperial family and some strained for even the smallest glimpse of the visiting foreigners, something the tinted windows of the car would deny them. But it was not overly long before they arrived at the Imperial Palace, a large complex sitting on an island in the river that flowed through Jiloola.

The cars would pull up in front of the Palace proper, a grand white and gold structure located atop a hill in the middle of the complex. The cars would pull up in front of a large statue depicting a bare-breasted woman holding a curved blade aloft whilst she stood with one foot on the chest of prone six-armed figure with horns and a great mane of hair. Behind that would be the Palace itself, outside of which members of the media gathered behind a cordon of guards to take pictures as the delegation was lead up into the building. Leading up to the Throne Room where the greeting would take place the delegate would hear the sounds of many conversations happening at once, but once they stepped into the Throne Room the voices would almost immediately trail off into silence as everyone present looked at the foreign dignitaries.

The Throne Room itself was a lavish room, longer than it was tall with pillars all down its length and a second level balcony from which even more people stood. There were a great many people assembled, from military officers to government officials to those simply lucky enough to have been born to a family of Old Nobility to members of the media, and as the delegation made their way forward across the mosaic floor they all stared. But the most striking thing in the Throne Room was, appropriately enough, the throne itself. The Ivory Throne of Xæth was a great beast: it consisted of a more typical throne draped with silks and with panels of carved ivory upon which sat the Empress, but that was located atop what amounted to a small structure a story tall ornamented with numerous figures of ivory and gold. The Delegation would have been forewarned of what exactly would be expected of them here; they'd be introduced, the Empress would be introduced, they would greet each other, then the Empress would give a short speech, followed by any Delegates who wished to say any words to the assembled Xæthoons. It would've also been made very clear that none of the Delegation were to bow, simply because they were foreign Heads of State and bowing was seen as a sign of submission and subservience in Xæthoon culture.

Ælirn opened her eyes as those around her went quiet as she knew that it could mean only one thing, and she let out a sigh when she saw the Nythymn and realized she was correct. As they made their way forward she shut her eyes again, controlling her breathing and mentally preparing herself for what was to come. She only opened her eyes again when she heard their names and titles being introduced to her. Then came her own introduction, and she sighed as she stood and made her way down the flight of stairs to the floor of the Throne Room. "Her Imperial Majesty Ælirn XIX of the Imperial House xy Thælyrn," her herald, a young noblewoman around her age, introduced her as to the Delegation, "The Most Serene and Celestial Empress of Xæth; Queen of Thælyrn, of Ynith, of Oova, and of Maashirn; High Queen of Jalyl; Lady-Protector of Maryrn; Sovereign Guardian of the Mountain Queens; Favoured Daughter of the Virgin Sun; Mistress of the Mountains, of the Hills, of the Forests, of the Rivers, and of the Seas; Warden of the Twin-Straits; and Rightful Ruler of all Xæth and its Peoples."

The Empress confidently strode over to the Delegates, or rather she at least outwardly appeared to move confidently as inside she was anything but, and spoke, "Ascendant Natrax, Empress Qi'rrow, Archdruid Iaxxodril, and Ionia Maar Velkin. We greet you as equals, and it is with great pleasure to welcome you to our wondrous nation. It is our greatest hope that you enjoy your time her in the Most Serene and Celestial Empire of Xæth." She waited until the Delegates greeted her in turn, then the Empress and Delegates both would head to the front of the throne for Ælirn to give her speech. A servant nearby would hand her the microphone and with a deep breath to steel herself she began.

"Great people of Xæth, it is with great pleasure that we welcome the Delegates of Nyx who were able to make the trip to our most eminent of nations on this day. Some of you may have wondered why the first proper State visit of our reign would be the Nythymn, why not King David of East Moreland or Empress Beatrice of Rokkenjima? We must admit that it is because we see something of a kindred spirit in Nyx; many of you know that since the reign of my grandmother Her Imperial Majesty Yphaa IX began almost thirty years ago Xæth began to look inward. So much so that Xæth entered a period of near diplomatic isolation. We do not question my ancestor's actions nor do we question the decision of her daughters to continue her policies. But this is a new time. Our time. And so when I was enthroned last November my first decision was to change course, to not ignore the goings on of the world around us but to take part in them. Building friendships with other nations, assisting them and having them assist us in return as equals and partners. That is how we see the future of Xæth.

But a great nation emerging from isolation on its path to returning to and immersing themselves in the international community once again. Now we ask you, our people, are we describing Xæth? Or are we describing Nyx? While we cannot speak for their reasoning, the Delegation of Nyx have also decided that they wish to change the course of their country's isolation. And we are excited for the potential prospects and opportunities that can arise from this, for both Xæth and Nyx. It is my sincerest wish that our two nations can take these early steps together, as equals and as friends. For although their customs may seem strange to us, we are certain many of our customs will seem strange to them. So though the traditions differ, we see in them a healthy respect and honor for tradition that they share with the people of Xæth."

It would be then that Ælirn would hand the microphone over to any of the Delegates who wished to say any words, assuming there were any.

It was not a particularly pleasant morning in Xæth. It had stormed the night prior and so the air remained thick and humid in the aftermath, and even though it was midmorning when the Nythymn arrived the temperature had already surpassed 80°F (27°C). As was typical for these sorts of visits the delegation would land at Jiloola International Airport, where they would be met by a Xæthoon representative. As the plane made its way over the Empire those inside would be treated to the sights of the Xæthoon landscapes, the grand mountains in the north sweeping down into rolling hills and swathes of jungle. Jiloola itself sat astride a great river and even from the sky one could see where it was bisected in two by a cliff running across the length of the city.

Upon exiting the plane the delegates would be greeted by a small group of officials, lead by an older woman with piercing eyes and a rather severe expression. Her Imperial Highness Princess Llyri xy Thælyrn was not happy about this visit. She'd rather have the East Morelanders or the Rokkenjimans; at least they weren't savages who maimed their Heads of State. But for some inexplicable reason, Ælirn had invited these people into their nation and despite her reservations about them Llyri, as Prime Minister, had to play nice. So she smiled as they approached, not entirely convincingly but well enough to still be polite, "On behalf of my niece, Her Imperial Majesty the Most Serene and Celestial Empress Ælirn XIX xy Thælyrn of Xæth, I welcome you wholeheartedly to our nation. I am Her Imperial Highness, and it is an honor to make all of your acquaintances." The group would introduce themselves and were composed of several Ministers of the Cabinet, including Ithana Tyraa who was of a noticeably lighter complexion than the others and Kallax xy Ool who was both the Minister for Technology and the Empress' Aunt, as well as several other lesser officials.

"If you would not mind we have a car ready to take you all to the Imperial Palace where the official meeting ceremony will take place," Minister Tyraa added, "Should you have any questions before the ride over I would be pleased to answer them, otherwise please follow us so we can be getting underway. I am certain that Her Majesty is eagerly anticipating your arrival."

To the Esteemed Members of the Delegation of the Consecrated Nyx Coalition,

It is with great joy that I must inform the most esteemed rulers of the Consecrated Nyx Coalition that Her Imperial Majesty Ælirn XIX xy Thælyrn offers an invitation for a diplomatic visitation to the capital city of Jiloola of the Most Serene and Celestial Empire of Xæth. Her Imperial Majesty was honoured to attend the coronation of Ascendant Natrax, her only regret being that she was unable to speak to the Ascendant herself. She finds herself fascinating by the ancient traditions and culture of your people and is eager for a chance to learn more about your people. Furthermore, with the recent emergence of the Nythmn from their isolation her Imperial Majesty views this as an excellent opportunity to develop and strengthen a mutually beneficial relationship between our two most prestigious nations. It is with great anticipation that we await your respond, so that we may make arrangements for the meeting.

Sincerely,
Ithana Tyraa, Minister for Foreign Affairs for the Most Serene and Celestial Empire of Xæth

"By the Gods, I could get used to weather like this!" Prince Allan shouted as the Imperial family's yacht made its way into the harbor, an immense grin plastered across his face. Then he looked back at another figure on deck, laughing, "Right, Voryn?"

The figure in question was a young man of the same dark skin tone as Allan, but with a braid of brown hair so dark it might as well be black and a morose expression across his face. He sighed, "It isn't that much cooler than home."

"Maybe, but Moreland doesn't feel like the air is trying to drown me," then he made his way over to his nephew and put an arm around him, "Come on, smile! We're on vacation! Kind of. Enjoy yourself."

"No disrespect intended Allan, but I would very much rather be back home. With my wife. And my daughter. Who is only a month old," Voryn replied, deadpan.

"This again man? Really?"

"Forgive me if I happen to want to see my child, Allan," came the reply, hostility creeping into Voryn's voice.

"Then why didn't you say no?" Allan asked, exasperated, "Ælirn asked you to do this. She didn't tell you to. She'd never do that. You could've just said 'no'."

When there was no answer forthcoming Allan retracted his arm and sighed, shaking his head as he wandered off to the front of the yacht to take in the scenery. Once he'd left, Voryn sighed as well and looked out over the water, "No I couldn't."

What little remained of the voyage passed quickly and uneventfully. The pair watched King David's speech in silence before heading off to the fairgrounds proper. It'd probably be a good idea to find King David and introduce themselves personally and failing that they could just wander around looking for anybody important who was mulling about, East Morelandish or otherwise.

------

The ANS Mariam was coming into the harbor around the same time and the mood aboard the ship was a festive one. The crewmen actually running the ship all wore replicas of the former Attican Royal Navy's uniforms and those aboard who weren't manning the ship itself were all bedecked in traditional Attican dress. Everyone onboard was exciting for the festival to come as it was a chance to not only enjoy themselves but to share the story of their people and their culture with the wider world. And among these celebrating people was Ithana Tyraa and her husband Levon Babayan.

She shifted her dress once again trying to make it as comfortable as she could; honestly Ithana had never been the greatest fan of her Attican heritage's manner of dress. But she was here as a part of that people and it'd be untoward of her to dress as a Xæthoon. And besides her poor husband had to dress in traditional Xæthoon clothing whenever the pair of them were at an event representing Xæth, so the least she could do was inconvenience herself for this. The pair of them stood at the edge of the ship, gazing out over the sea in blissful silence. She'd have business to attend here later, just a small speech, but there was still time for her and Levon to go out and enjoy the festival for a short while first. It was nice being on a visit to a foreign land without the weight of any official diplomatic business. Of course she would be attending the King's Banquet in an official capacity, but for the moment she was not Ithana Tyraa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Xæth. No, she was simply Ithana Zabel Tyraa-Vardanyan.

Ælirn was absolutely relieved that everything with the Diet had gone well, and she let out a great sigh of relief once she was away from the assembly of foreign politicians. The young Empress hadn't even realized how tense her body was until she was away and consciously forced herself to relax. There was still a pit in her stomach, but experience told her that once she got her mind off of things that'd quickly dissipate. She certainly hoped so; the last thing she wanted for the rest of this visit was to feel sickened. Once she met back up with Beatrice she waved off Beatrice's explanation for Koizumi's behavior, "Oh it's fine. That's just how politicians are. We suppose we'd better get used to people like him, shouldn't we?"

At Beatrice's question about 'the classics' Ælirn spent a moment thinking before she answered, "We are... Unsure? Your classics are probably very different from what we would consider the classics, if we are to be honest." It was true; Ælirn was quite fond of certain traditional musics from her homeland but she doubted Beatrice would be able to name a single song that Ælirn would consider a "classic".

"But we are sure we will enjoy it nonetheless," she added with a smile.

Assemblymen Criticizes National Integrity and Unity League

Late last month numerous members of the National Assembly declared their intention to keep the legislature in deadlock as a form of protest against HIM Ælirn XIX's Three Peoples Edict, for reasons that ranged from dissatisfaction with the stated goal of the Edict to opposition to the exclusion of the National Assembly in the deciding process. While those in protest do not form a majority of the National Assembly, there are enough to block the passage of any nonpartisan bills brought to a vote. At present the protesting members are predominantly members of the National Integrity and Unity League, the People's Party, and the Unity Party (colloquially known as the Traditionalist, Conservatives, and Liberals) and at present the Unity Party is the only party to release a statement on the protests, stating that the protest is 'the legal right of the Assemblymen in question'. However, not all members of the aforementioned parties are happy with these developments; Traditionalist Assemblymen Ixidala Naxar has denounced the leadership of her party for their lack of action, stating:

"When these so-called protests began, I stayed silent. I stayed silent because I trusted the League's leadership. I trusted them to do what is right. I did not expect an answer immediately; this is politics after all, and nothing happens immediately in politics. But it has been nearly a month and while some say that the League leadership has not made a statement on these 'protests', I disagree. Their silence is a deafening statement of their tacit support for these women and men. Some may wonder if this means I agree with Her Majesty's Three People's Edict, to which I say that my opinion on the Edict does not matter. These women and men in the National Assembly have forgotten that Xæth is not a republic. Xæth is an Empire, and not a republic wearing the skin of a monarchy like some nations. The Empress rules Xæth today just as she has for nearly a thousand years, and these women and men spit in the faces of centuries of tradition with their 'protest'. So I, and the numerous league members that stand behind me, demand that those in charge of the League do what is right and proper and just. We demand that they denounce the 'protest' and demand an end to them lest those taking part be expelled from the League."

Her Imperial Majesty Ælirn XIX has officially come out in support of Ixidala, thanking her and her supporters for their "continued loyalty to the Throne". At present the National Integrity and Unity League has not released an official statement in regard to Ixidala's demands.

Imperial Investigation into Police Abuses Begins in Maryrn

The Viceregency of Maryrn has oft been accused of having its local police commit acts of racial prejudice and discrimination against its Maori minority, and although there have been investigations into these allegation previously they have never produced much evidence. It has been over a month since Her Imperial Majesty Ælirn XIX declared that there was to be a large-scale investigation into these reported abuses conducted exclusively by the Imperial Police, with Her Majesty declaring that "there will not be a single Maryrnoon officer exempt from this investigation. From the lowest rank to the highest, the Imperial Police will not cease their investigation until they discover the absolute truth of these investigations". There have been many objections to the investigation, with local police officers stating that it is a breach of trust and a waste of Imperial funds. But the investigation has begun regardless of these objections, with the police of Maryrn's major cities being the first to face the Imperial Police's scrutiny.

Næxyn was surprised when Emperor Abbas himself made his way over to the three of them and actually addressed her husbands for once. It was a pleasant surprise, and Næxyn smiled at the man's words, "It has been a pleasure meeting you as well, Your Majesty, and I share that hope as well. And I would be more than happy to give this to my Empress."

"May your God watch over you," she said as her own farewell. The Princess was glad that something else had been gained from her attendance today; she sincerely doubted that Tamora and Xæth would ever be friends but she could perhaps do something to prevent the two nations from becoming too antagonistic. After all, she had fought Communist beside Tamorans and she'd hate to be forced to consider them her enemies. Then she opened up the case to see what exactly the gift was, only to laugh out loud when she saw what it was. Zadyr looked over curiously, smiling as well when he saw the pen. They both knew full well of Ælirn's fondness for fancy pens, and it seemed Alya did as well. Either that or it was simple luck, but Næxyn felt like giving the woman the benefit of the doubt.

"I very much agree, these sorts of occasions are always nice. And it's been too long since I attended a wedding, let alone a wholly Christian one," Ithana said, smiling at Henrietta, "And King David doesn't sound too dissimilar to Empress Ælirn; I haven't known Her Majesty long, but I do know that she is fascinated by foreign cultures and customs. I've also heard that dancing isn't exactly her specialty, so that's something else they have in common." Ithana chuckled at that.

"Though I suppose that fascination isn't always a good thing," she sighed, glancing over at the Nythymn attendees, "I hear King David was also at Ascendant Natrax's coronation. Their dragging themselves out of isolation is certain to shake things up on both our continents, wouldn't you agree?"

Næxyn was rather disappointed with Heydar. She hadn't know what exactly to expect, but she hadn't expected him to act like a child and storm off. For that was what Næxyn considered it despite how calmly he may have left. He made a request and when foreign royals had the audacity not say bow to his whim and acquiesce, he suddenly had family he needed to see immediately. It was honestly quite sad; he should've at least stayed for a moment longer just to keep up appearances.

"I suppose his majesty doesn't take well to being denied," Prince Zadyr said in their native tongue, deadpan.

"True. A pity that; I guess Seleucid hospitality only extends to those who lick your boots," Næxyn shrugged, then looked over at her other husband, who was simply picking at his food.

"Dearest wife, now that our host has taken his leave I think I'm going to do the same. There's still an entire festival out there, after all," Aataxaris said, smiling. Næxyn nodded, bidding him goodbye for the moment. She was thinking about the day so far, and it hadn't gone quite as well as she might have hoped. But at least she gained some measure of insight into King Heydar. And who knows, perhaps Ælirn might actually entertain Heydar's request. But at the moment her focus returned to the luncheon; she planned to stay for the whole of the festival so she might as well enjoy herself.

It had been a very long time since Ithana had traveled abroad on an official function, and she had to admit that it was something she missed. She loved Xæth dearly and loved to represent it on the world stage, something that she hoped she'd get to do far more with Ælirn in power. And a wedding such as this was a good thing to ease Ithana back into things as despite the fact that it was Tytorian it was still a Christian wedding, which was something she had some measure of experience with. The cathedral was different from the churches back home of course and some of the details differed, but at its core it still reminded her of when she had married her darling Levon. He was not as happy to be here as she was; dealing with these sorts of people were not his specialty and he had spent much of the time before the wedding complaining. About the chill, the looseness of the traditional Xæthoon attire they both wore, about every little thing. Ithana had taken it in stride as she knew he'd eventually get it out of his system, and she was right. Once they had actually arrived at the wedding he had quieted down, and once it ended and they made their way to the ball room she saw him smile out of the corner of his eye.

The pair first offered their congratulations to the newlyweds before heading off to have a dance or two or Levon's behest. Once they had finished they both grabbed a drink, and Ithana smiled at Levon. "Oh no, I know that smile," he said in Attican, narrowing his eyes, "You're thinking about abandoning me to the wolves, aren't you?"

"No, of course not," Ithana said with a smile, "But I do need to go do my job."

Levon sighed, "Alright. Fine. Have fun."

"You too," she said, giving him a peck on the cheek before she turned to head off. She decided that perhaps the best place to start would be with someone whom Xæth actually had some connection and semblance of 'friendship' already. East Moreland seemed like a safe bet, and she made her way over to Prime Minister Quinn. She smiled as she greeted them, "Xitaar, Prime Minister Quinn. Minister Merriman. I believe this is the first time we have met in person; it is a pleasure to meet you both. This is quite a lovely day we are having, no?"

Meawhile Levon was standing around sipping orange juice. He had never been much of a people person, but he'd be damned if he didn't support his wife. Especially now that she held such an important position in the government. But that did not change the fact that he had no idea what to do aside simply stand there. So he scanned the crowd; perhaps he could spot someone else who was merely the spouse of someone important. He doubted it, but one could always hope.

Næxyn and Aataxaris were busy in Ghulum's tent when they received word that they should reconvene with King Heydar. Aataxaris found it a pity; he felt in his element here speaking of gems and jewelry and business. It was a shame to leave and return to the world of politics and royalty; he might have married an Imperial Princess but he had always done what he could to stay as uninvolved in politics as he could. Aataxaris did plan on returning here after they were finished, but for the moment the pair bid farewell and made their way to King Heydar. Zadyr was already seated when they arrive and they quickly made their way to seat themselves beside him, with Næxyn in the middle and flanked by each of her husbands. There was a short back and forth in Xæthoon as they caught each other up to speed before Prince Næxyn smiled and congratulated Heydar on his upcoming marriage. But once again she had to marvel inside at the backwardness of it all. Monogamy? Monogamy she could understand in a way. But a man with several wives? All it did was allow a man to indulge in his baser urges, which was the exact opposite of what most men needed.

Then as Heydar spoke up about his 'ulterior motives', Næxyn chuckled under her breathe. Of course a newly crowned King would have an ulterior motive; most monarchs weren't interested in simply having a nice chat with foreign leadership. And this was a chance for Heydar to truly cement his place on the throne; being forced to allow foreign soldiers to operate with impunity on your soil was a humiliation of the highest degree possible. If Heydar managed to get the Cennegslaig to leave no Seleucid would question him. The Princess wondered if anyone would take him up on his offer, aside from the Tamorans of course. She had no doubt that Abbas would be more than willing despite the futility of it; Næxyn couldn't imagine the Cennegslaig commander caring about the opinion of a Tamoran repesentative.

She looked to her side at both of her husbands, wondering what they were thinking. Zadyr was deep in thought, probably thinking much the same thing as she was if she was to be honest. Meanwhile she had to stifle a chuckle at Aataxaris and how his eyes had practically glazed over. She had no doubt that he just wanted to finish eating and head back to the festival, and she felt for him. But they had just arrived, and it might not be a formal banquet or anything of the like but leaving so soon would still be rude.

"That is quite the request, Your Majesty," Næxyn said diplomatically, "Unfortunately, I am not in quite the position to send anyone myself. However, I would gladly pass the message along to Empress Ælirn." She'd refuse of course, Næxyn thought, one could be friends with the Maori or one could be friends with the Seleucids. And her grand niece had already chosen with whom she wanted to pursue friendship. But Næxyn would still ask.

Nation:- The Most Serene and Celestial Empire of Xæth
Boat:- ANS Mariam

Image:-
Spoiler: Image • show

Brief Background to ship:- The ANS Mariam served as the flagship of the Royal Attican Navy prior to the nation's annexation in 1958, and was one of the ships that refused the order of surrender and instead fled to Xæth. There it served proudly in the Xæthoon Imperial Navy as the IXNS Mariam until it was decommissioned in the late 70s. The ship was viewed as an important symbol of the Attican diaspora in Xæth and of their refusal to bow to a foreign conqueror (the Tamorans) and in 1984 it was acquired for restoration by the Attican Advancement Association after several years of negotiation with the restoration only recently being publicly announced as completed.

What would you like it to do while in Portworth:- The ANS Mariam has been converted into a floating museum focusing on Attican history and culture, with an emphasis on that of the Attican diaspora across Mundus.
