Hyllaræ, 2019
« on: May 15, 2019, 07:55:46 PM »
To the Many Esteemed and Sublime Nations of Mundus,

On the 21st of this month of May, the people of Xæth will be celebrating their traditional harvest festivities of Hyllaræ. Hyllaræ is a time of great merriment and celebration amongst the Xæthoon and this year Her Imperial Majesty the Most Serene and Celestial Empress of Xæth Ælirn XIX xy Thælyrn has given an open invitation to the various governments around Mundus to send dignitaries to come and partake in the festivities with her. To foster cohesion and unity across the width and breadth of Xæth it is tradition that for many of Xæth's traditional festivals and holidays the Empress travels outside the Imperial capital of Jiloola to one of the numerous smaller settlements across the whole of the empire. For her first Hyllaræ as Empress Her Imperial Majesty has chosen to celebrate in Xahalla, a seaside town of several thousand people in western Xæth. Any dignitaries arriving by ship will be able to dock in Xahalla itself but the town does not have a proper airport and so any dignitaries arriving by air are asked to land at the airport in the nearby city of Ythirba, roughly a 45 minute drive away from Xahalla itself. The Empress looks forward to sharing the culture of our wondrous and illustrious nation with those who attend.

Sincerely,
Ithana Tyraa, Minister for Foreign Affairs for the Most Serene and Celestial Empire of Xæth

It was only the morning of the grand Hyllaræ festival and yet the streets of Xahalla were already starting to bustle with activity. Even more so than normal for this time of year. Not only was Hyllaræ was a wondrous and joyous time, a time for celebration and festivity and gaiety, but the Empress herself had deigned to visit their small town and celebrate with them. It was certainly out of the ordinary, but the people of Xahalla were ecstatic to have been chosen for this honour. Arrangements had been made for the delegates to arrive in the town around the same time, assuming there were not any unforeseen setbacks, and they were to all arrive by car at the Xahalla town hall where they would be greeted by the Empress herself. The sky was beautiful and clear, with not a single cloud visible in the sky, although the temperature was already beginning to rise as the temperature was expected to potentially reach into the 90s (30s Celesius) today. The delegates themselves were warned beforehand of the temperature and that they would be likely to spend much time outside, and so were advised to dress accordingly. Great banners and streamers in bright and gaudy colours were draped on buildings and let to dangle over the streets and the cars carrying the delegates would be the only cars out on the streets, the streets were already begin to fill up with people wandering about, merchants opening their small stalls and food carts selling cold drinks and frozen treats already making their rounds. However the town was not large and the ride once arriving in the town proper was short. The town hall was the fanciest building the delegates had seen so far, but it was still a far cry from impressive as Xahalla was not particularly wealthy or important. But nonetheless the delegates would then be whisked away into building to greet the Empress, whilst a small crowd began to form and gawk at the foreigners present in their town.

Ælirn waited inside the city hall, humming to herself as she waited in great anticipation. This would be an important day and great things could come of it; she had gone on visits to foreign nations several times, however this would be the first time since her Enthronement that foreign delegates would be visiting Xæth at her behest. And although Ælirn hated to pick favourites, she had to admit that she was most looking forward to meeting the delegation from Tauredalia. They were Xæth's neighbor after all, and it always paid to have good relations with ones neighbours. Not to mention she wanted to start befriending them before certain other nations dug their hooks into Tauredalia. And the Empress was, of couse, not standing all by herself; she was accompanied by several members of the Imperial family as well as her Minister for Foreign Affairs Ithana Tyraa and the Mistress of Xahalla. And that was another reason why Ælirn was in such a good mood; it had been rather hectic and her family hadn't gathered like this for awhile. She hadn't seen her younger brother Vyrax much since he began training to be a priest and his blood-father had been scarce since the death of Ælirn's mother and while Llyri was ever-present in her life, her cousins had their own lives to attend to at the moment. It wasn't perfect of course, her other brother wasn't present as his wife was currently pregnant and his blood-father had declined to attend and Llyri's eldest son was also attending the festivities elsewhere with his own wife. But it was enough. And when she saw the delegates' cars arrive she took and deep breath and smiled.

"OK its about to get a little bumpy" the naval aviator informed the passengers. As they prepared to touch down and float into the port of Xahalla the military style seating in the back of the Ekrabadger II saw Freya strap in, she'd have prefered to watch this from the cockpit but sadly wasn't permitted. It wasn't like landing on tarmac with a smooth roll out, you touched the water and then got several fient bounces until you felt like you were on a boat. The craft was probably one of the odder ones that visited Xaeth but having been on a quick stop over with the Iwi to talk military doings Freya had been dispatched to the festival. The rest of the hold was filled with 100 Royal Marine Commandos who essentially were tested subjects for the vehicle which was still a prototype officially. One of the joys of the new design was it was amphibious and so rolled right up the slip way meaning Freya didn't even need to get her feet wet as she and her Head of Household, Rebecca Jarrett exited via a side door.

They clambered into the waiting car and watched as the pilot of the Ekra-Badger slipped it into reverse and back into the harbour, performed a quick spin and chugged back out to sea, all in the time it took the car to leave the port area. As they headed towards the Town Hall they could just about see it skimming the wave tops as it headed back towards East Moreland. Freya was strangely looking forward to this, it was one of the few overseas trips she'd not had to handle official business on although she suspected at some point it would come up. She'd have prefered to have Alex with her but he was off yelling at candidates for Red Legion selection somewhere in the Alps and Evie wasn't exactly a member of the royal family so it wasn't right to put the six year old through this. As they pulled up she brushed a rouge piece of fluff from her skirt and swung her legs from the car. She spotted Ælirn and made her way over. "Good Morning Your Impeial Majesty" Freya gave a small bow. "My brother sends his greetings and this" it was a small wooden box and inside was a deep blue velvet cushioned lining, a gold handled knife sat inside along with a slate cutting board about half the size of an A4 piece of paper. There was also a silver cigarette lighter and in a silver candle holder a dark red candle. "As you probably remember from your visit to East Moreland its important that every meal we make a small offering to our Gods. We figured seeing as this was a new harvest a new set of equipment was needed. We hope it brings you a bountiful harvest" Freya said explaining the gift.

The Achkaerinese jet callsign 'Fox One' due to the presence of members of the Royal family aboard it touched down in Xaeth, it was likely to be the last flight for this particular aircraft before the new fleet of aircraft came into service, that was if the budget was approved chances were it would be but it couldn't be said for certain until it happened. Aboard the plane for this probable final flight was fittingly the Achkaerinese Emperor Peter Azurewind he'd had a fairly intense schedule of late, the run up to the Covenant Address did that and in all honesty the Emperor had spent so much time locked in rooms with the speech writers and consultants that he desperately needed a break and this was perfect. Accompanying him on the trip he'd brought his niece Cerys, fresh from her university exams and also in need of something less stressful than that, and some time away never hurt - unless you were Serenity in which case you were liable to get kidnapped by terrorists but the less thought about that the better.

The drive from Ythirba to Xahalla was taken in one of the newer cars in the royal garage, Peter let Cerys drive on this occasion, though he drew the line at letting her pick the music, when they parked up at the town hall they walked in side by side Peter smiled when he saw Freya standing there talking to the host, normal service was resumed, he waited for Freya to finish and then stepped up to Ælirn.

"Your Majesty." Peter said "I don't believe you've met my niece Cerys." he introduced his companion "I suppose the rather cheesy question to ask would be how's the harvest been this year wouldn't it?"

For a time, it seemed that Verazueth was on the verge of becoming a matriarchy by construct of the demons: Queen Aikaterina was the third child of Queen Zarath, who'd been the only child of her father. Aikaterina's older brothers had been taken by calamity and war from which she'd been spared by virtue of being female. Even now, Aikaterina had to walk a thinner line than her mother: she might be a monarch, but she was still a woman and therefore not entirely equal to her peers. Fortunately, the House of Ostraar finally produced a male heir, Sarrasia's older brother, and it was the hope of the nation that he should take the throne rather than risk further lowering Verazueth's status with a third queen.

Sarrasia reluctantly agreed that the ascension of her brother was necessary, but that did not mean she had to like it. While she too worshiped Archdemon Dhinir, she felt that Archdemon Seremis would have been a better patron of woman's plight. The devotion of the ideal of a quiet, submission woman was toxic to their gender and Sarrasia felt it would be better to shatter that image. Nevertheless, she had a part to play, and she believed that Archdemon Seremis had guided her to Xaeth for a reason.

The Verazulan princess departed the plane with minimal attendants - her bodyguard and personal assistant - in open defiance of Daalish customs. She felt that she needed to display as much independence as possible and only agreed to a bodyguard because the queen had ordered it.

Observing the others, Zeladra behrna Koreena de Woden nodded toward Cerys and whispered, "I think she might be your type."

"Shush!" Being gay was not a crime in any Daalish kingdom, but it was not a fact that Sarrasia liked advertised, especially since she was still expected to produce children as third in line to the throne.

"No one heard me," Zeladra assured her. Quietly, she identified the individuals she recognized from dossiers and what little information they had on them.

Adriana almost spoke before Beatrice as their hosts approached, "Your Imperial Highness," she did in fact say before her mother, "I thank you for your welcome." Beatrice stood silent, acknowledging her daughters words. "So pleasant to be in Xaeth again," she followed, "I have wondered how you'd been since our time together," she continued.

Ælirn smiled as she say Princess Freya making her way to her. She was somewhat disappointed King David was unable to make it himself since she had actually met him before, but she understood that he was a Head of State and quite busy. And it was still an honor to host his sister, and with her making friends with East Moreland it did behoove the young Empress to meet other members of the Ironside family. "Good morning, your Royal Highness," Ælirn said with a polite nod to the Princess, before taking a look at the proffered gift, "It is a beautiful knife, we must say. It is a pleasure and an honour to have you here for our festival, Princess Freya. We heard you made quite the entrance; we expect most other delegates will have chosen to come either by ship or plane, not both."

After she was done with the Morelanders, Ælirn turned to smile at the Achkaerinese who had been quietly waiting their turn. When Peter introduced his niece Ælirn smiled and nodded, "It is a pleasure to meet you Cerys; we hope you enjoy your day. Although we imagine it's not as cool as you're used to up north." She chuckled at Peter's comment, "we heard that is was decent enough this year, though Mistress Vyr would know better than us. She is the, well, the Mistress of Xahalla. The equivalent title would be mayor, we think?" Then she turned to a stoic-faced older woman amongst the assembled Xæthoons, saying something in Xæthoon, who responded in kind before being translated by a younger woman standing next to her, "Mistress Vyr says that the harvest this year was satisfactory, and she thanks you for asking."

Then was one of the groups Ælirn was most looking forward to: the Tauredalians. Though they were also the only delegation present from a nation that she had yet to have any diplomatic contact with, so unfortunately for Ælirn it'd also be the most awkward. But the Empress quickly pushed those thoughts out of her head and put on a large smile. "Princess Sarrasia; it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, your Royal Highness," Ælirn said with a polite, "We must admit that we were rather excited when Minister Tyraa received a response from your nation. For neighbouring nations to have as little diplomatic contact as Xæth and Tauredalia is nearly a crime, we sincerely hope you all enjoy your day here in our lovely nation." Ælirn smiled as she waited for a response, praying to all the Gods above that she hadn't laid it on too thick.

And once Ælirn had finished with the Tauredalians, she breathed a sigh of relief to see a familiar face. In truth Ælirn found it odd how fond she was of Beatrice since in truth the two of them hadn't actually spent that much time together. Perhaps it had to do with Ælirn's having broken down crying the first time they met; that was certainly something that set Rokkenjima's Empress apart. "Your Royal Highness," Ælirn said to Adriana with a smile, "We thank you for your coming." Then she focused her attention on Beatrice, "Things have been... Very busy as of late. We worry that we might have to start dying our hair to hide the silver before the year is out. But regardless of that, today is supposed to be a happy day! And we are elated that you could make it, your Imperial Majesty."

Once she had finished greeting all the various delegations present, Ælirn cleared her throat in order to speak to them all, "We are most happy that you all could make it to our festival today, though before we begin we suppose that some introductions are likely to be in order." At this, another young woman made her way before and gave a polite nod to the assembled delegations and grinned, ready to speak. And as she grinned Ælirn sighed; this was not something that she had been looking forward to, but she was reigning Empress now and was receiving guests in her own nation. If it wasn't done, she'd never hear the end of it from Aunt Llyri.

"Please, allow me to introduce Her Imperial Majesty Ælirn the Nineteenth of the Imperial House xy Thælyrn; the Most Serene and Celestial Empress of Xæth; Queen of Thælyrn, of Ynith, of Oova, and of Maashirn; High Queen of Jalyl; Lady-Protector of Maryrn; Sovereign Guardian of the Mountain Queens; Favoured Daughter of the Virgin Sun; Mistress of the Mountains, of the Hills, of the Forests, of the Rivers, and of the Seas; Warden of the Twin-Straits; and Rightful Ruler of all Xæth and its Peoples," the young woman gestured towards Ælirn with a flourish, who promptly forced a smile. Ælirn loved her titles, but she couldn't help but feel like their full recitation made her look pompous.

Then the young women went through each and every individual present, introducing them to the assembled delegates who may or may not be familiar with who they were. Ælirn's Aunt Llyri xy Thælyrn, Crown Princess and Prime Minister of Xæth, her two teenaged daughters Tylinæ and Zaxaal; her Uncle Prince Allan who at first glance would be mistaken for the Empress' brother; Ælirn's actual younger brother Aræv and his blood-father Tarak; the Minister for Foreign Affairs Ithana Tyraa, whose fair complexion made her stand out amongst the otherwise brown-skinned Xæthoons present; stone-faced Tyra Vyr, Mistress of Xahalla; and after a moment of forgetfulness, herself: Talyln xy Zaarn, the Empress' Herald.

Once she had finished, Ælirn clasped her hands together, "Well, now that that is over please follow us. The morning is still young, and we would like a chance to sit down and converse before we head out into the heat to join the festivities." All the various delegates would be lead to a meeting room that appeared to have been set aside and furnished for the delegates to sit and relax. There were seats and refreshments offered by servants to those present, and everyone was free to converse as they deemed fit.

Ælirn smiled as she waited for a response, praying to all the Gods above that she hadn't laid it on too thick.
Sarrasia inclined her head in lieu of a full curtsy. She felt she could get away with the small lapse in Daalish protocol as she was outside Tauredalia's borders. Despite being a princess, she was still ranked lower than any of the eight Daalish monarchs and should show sufficient deference, but outside her kingdoms she was considered a peer and she felt she would appear too deferential if she had curtsied; after all, she was not a commoner. However, Zeladra bowed deeply and kept her eyes averted, as an assistant should.

"On behalf of the Confederated Kingdoms, I am greatly honored to make your personal acquaintance and hopefully the first steps toward a closer relationship between our nations, Your Majesty," Sarrasia replied. "May Archangel Lidmus and the other angels smile upon us today." With a glint in her eye, she leaned in and quietly added, "If it so amuses Your Majesty, I would like to pursue a personal audience with you later." Her face reverted to a calm, friendly demeanor as she walked away and blended in with the crowd.

"That's quite a mouthful," Zeladra remarked wryly following the recitation of Ælirn's titles.

"You go too far," Sarrasia growled, glaring at her from the corner of her eye. As a princess, it was difficult to make true friends, especially among her peers, and her mother had selected companions for her from among the Daalish nobility, but Zeladra had been with her for three years and they had grown close during that time. Sarrasia would begrudgingly admit that the woman, who was of similar age, was the closest she had to a confidante in the palace and she often allowed Zeladra to speak out of turn and otherwise break protocol. However, the latter was becoming too confident in her security and showed it by boldly making statements that were not wise to make in front of others.

In spite of herself, Sarrasia took the sting out of her rebuke by asking, "What do we know of the Achkaerinese delegation?"

Zeladra allowed herself a small smile. "That is His Majesty, Peter Azurewind. I believe his companion is his daughter, Princess Serenity[1]. I believe she is a naval officer."

Sarrasia's eyebrow arched. "Do you think she holds a real position?" she asked hopefully. While women were allowed in the Daalish armed forces, they were not treated equally and rarely served in anything other than administrative roles. The Verazulan royal family mandated service and following the two unfortunate deaths of her uncles, the tours became entirely ceremonial. Even if that hadn't been the case, Sarrasia's commission existed largely on paper; even though she'd optimistically prepared herself for actual combat, she was barely allowed on base to serve, let alone perform her designated office.
 1. OOC: I'm aware that Cerys is actually his niece.
