TIMELINE

Spoiler: TRIBAL PERIOD (6000BCE - 1731CE) • show

Prior to its colonisation by Hassop, Dreytonia was known as Avalon, inhabited by several thousand tribes locked in a state of constant war. The Avalonians practiced a pagan religion with multiple gods, varying from each tribe. Occasionally, a tribe would absorb others and grow to kingdom size, but such powers were short-lived. Technological advancement was slower than on the mainland, as Avalonian seacraft were not advanced enough to cross the strait between Cotf Aranye and the homeland. The original inhabitants evidently descended from the same parent culture as the Mercians who later conquered them.

Spoiler: COLONIAL PERIOD (1732CE - 1836CE) • show

Although Dreytonia was known about for some centuries prior (and had on some occasions been explored), it was not settled by outsiders until 1732 when a group of Hassopite colonists under Warren Conway claimed the land in the name of the Commonwealth. The Avalonians would attempt to fight back as they attained some of the colonists' technology, but were eventually defeated. Noteworthy of the events in this period are the formation of a kingdom under King Kendric and the guerrilla war that followed. Despite vehement resistance from the natives, Dreytonia was eventually completely conquered by Hassop. At this time Dreytonia became an invaluable territory for the Hassopite Empire, as the island provided safe harbour for the Imperial Fleet which in turn could dominate the Krimeon sea. The island colony also provided a great deal of income from trade conducted there. While the Mercians saw the Avalonians as a primitive and savage people, the fact that they were of the same race, and had at least understood such technologies as primitive metallurgy, spared them segregation and atrocities common in other colonies. Instead, the native Avalonians were assimilated.

Spoiler: NATIONAL PERIOD (1837CE - 1934CE) • show

In 1837, Dreytonia was made an autonomous state, but remained a dominion of Hassop. Independence was gained peacefully, as there were few doubts as to the loyalty of the Dreytonian people. Dreytonians, while fiercely loyal to the homeland, were eager to establish a reputation for their own nation. Attempts were made by the traditional Avalonians to restore their dominion over the land, but by this point in time, a large portion of the population were either Mercian migrants, or assimilated Avalonians. The Dreytonian fleet, the pride of its military, was at the forefront of naval confrontations in the Krimeon in this period, providing the Hassopite Empire with aa great deal of control over the region. The Dreytonians were devastated however when, at the end of a large conflict in which Hassop was victorious, they were excluded from peace talks and were granted no concessions. Coupled with poor economic conditions in the years following, a nationalistic fascist movement began to accumulate support. Oswald Crawford, a former Dreytonian Admiral who felt Dreytonia's exclusion from peace talks a personal betrayal, used his fiery rhetoric to incite ultra-nationalism amongst the people; Dreytonian and Avalonian alike.

Spoiler: FASCIST PERIOD (1935CE - 1946CE) • show

In 1935, a coup place Crawford in power. Dreytonia immediately separated completely from the Hassopite Empire. Under Crawford's rule, Avalonian culture came to the forefront once again, mostly due to the rejection of things Mercian in nature. If there ever was any positive outcome of his rule, it was that a new national identity was formed; one which both Dreytonians and Avalonians supported. Despite this however, borders were closed, and those who had immigrated beforehand were heavily discriminated against. As a former Admiral, Crawford understood the importance of his island nation's navy. Crawford reasoned that while Dreytonia's army could not hope to match those of its neighbours in size, Dreytonia's navy and air force could. The "Dreytonian Lake" doctrine emerged from this reasoning, although resources could not yet be redirected from the army, as Crawford needed it to suppress growing unrest. Crawford was assassinated in 1943 at the age of 54, likely by his successor; Samuel Healy. Healy ruled for three years, but without Crawford, the unity of the nation fell apart. The state fractured in 1946, and entered a period of internal conflict. From 1947 to 1949, the political factions of Dreytonia debated just how the nation would move forward in regards to the government.

Spoiler: REFORMATION PERIOD (1950CE - 1991CE) • show

Borne out of a rejection of fascism and the rule of one, the new government was founded on the foundation of power division. The legislative body was to be identical to the parliament which existed before 1935, and the executive (First Minister and their cabinet) was to have very few powers. The First Minister was barely more influential than the leader of opposition which lead the second largest majority (party or coalition) in parliament. For fear of a continuation of the inequality faced during the Crawford era, Dreytonia's government was established only after socialist political elements pushed heavy regulation into the new legal framework. With Edward Pryor's election to First Minister in 1950, attempts were made to introduce economic reforms, however the socialist and communist parties (Dreytonian Worker's Party and Dreytonian People's Party respectively) blocked every proposal to do so. In 1968 however, it was clear that Dreytonia was falling behind every other western nation economically. First Minister Godfrey Powell won a landslide victory in the 1970 Federal Election because of this, and managed to seize a majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Powell wasted no time, and realised his dream of a return to economic freedom by implementing a series of macroeconomic and microeconomic reforms. Powell's policies rescued Dreytonia's declining economy and directed it back towards competition with other western nations.

Spoiler: PRESIDENTIAL PERIOD (1992CE - ) • show

In 1989, the Balarion islands, a region of Dreytonia, was seized by militaristic separatists. The local government was subdued and independence was declared. The group in question (known as the Hamilton Separatist Army) was defended by a number of members of Parliament who were either bribed by Hamilton agents or part of the sweeping Hamilton separatist movement. The islands remained free until 1992 when a new Dreytonian government launched an invasion to retake the island territory. The new government was the product of a recent referendum, which proposed a stronger executive and was only narrowly approved. The parliament was replaced by the National Assembly and the First Minister replaced by a President. The invasion was successful and the Balarions were liberated.
