The Kingdom of Arnor
« on: January 09, 2018, 05:55:58 PM »

Motto:- Ut Victoriam Christi (To Victory in Christ)
National Anthem:- Anthem to Arnor

BACKGROUND

The Kingdom of Arnor was founded in 125 B.C. by a King known as Elendil I, who united the warring Dunedain tribes under one banner. Before that, Arnor had been a collection of warring tribes of Dunedain who had loved nothing but death and destruction, and King Elendil I gave them hope under his conquering rule. The next hundred and fifty years or so were rather uneventful, with Arnor being isolated in Mundus and keeping to herself. A major turning point in Arnorian history, however, was when Christian missionaries came to Arnor at the bidding of Pope Clement I in 89 A.D., and the King at that time, King Belgabad I, converted to Christianity and the whole nation followed, making Arnor one of the oldest Christian nations in Mundus.

Arnor was seen as a very secluded, yet influential Christian nation, sending missionaries to all parts of the world in an attempt to spread the Good News of Christ and to preach the gospel to every creature. A great controversy took place in Arnor in 1054 A.D., when the Great Schism took place between the Orthodox Churches and the Celestian Catholic Church, with Gondor siding with the Papacy after much debate and not wanting to be excommunicated by the Bishop of Celestia. Arnor remained very Catholic until the Reformation, when many Arnorian Nobles read John Calvin's The Necessity of Reforming the Church and Martin Luther's Concerning Christian Liberty. The High King of Arnor at the time, King Helegar IV, converted to Reformed Christianity and gave many Protestants a safehaven in Arnor, and was promptly excommunicated from the Catholic Church by Pope Paul III in 1537, sparking a religious controversy in the nation that remains to this day.

Leaders of Arnor

High King Elendil II

A Brief Overview of the King

King Elendil II is Arnor's current sovereign, and is revered as one of Arnor's most intelligent and wise Kings in its history. From the time the King was boy, he was interested in things like world history, theology, politics, and many other fields of study. Elendil grew up in a time of peace for Arnor, and had a productive youth, serving in the Royal Arnorian Marines as a Lieutenant before ascending to the throne upon his father's death in 2000.  His education includes a PhD in Political Science from the Royal Arnorian Academy, A Masters in Preaching and Teaching of Sacred Scripture from the Royal Arnorian Theological Seminary, and a Bachelors Degree in Public Relations from Annuminas College. His diverse education has gained him the love of his people, as he has emphasized a focus on education and peace during his reign, being very adamant about the liberty of conscience and the freedom of thought. At 44 years of age King Elendil II wishes to bring Arnor into a new age of peace and prosperity, wanting to begin relations with many nations across Mundus. Elendil II is a quiet and reserved man who is listened to when he speaks, and commands the respect of his people.

The Current State of Arnorian Affairs

Above: Arnorian Protestants and Catholics fight on the streets of Annuminas, circa 1541

Arnor is currently enjoying a long era of peace which has lasted since the tragic Civil War of the Church, which lasted from 1539-1546, in which Protestants and Catholics waged war on one another over the throne, which resulted in the deaths of an estimated 1.5 million Christians, and resentment and blame for the war still being thrown between the two sides. The War resulted in the signing of the Treaty of Annuminas, which allowed for the Protestant High King to remain on the throne, provided that the Archbishopric of Arthedain remain in power over the faithful Catholics, and that the Celestian Church would be allowed to worship freely, to which the Protestants reluctantly agreed.

As peace settled in Arnor, the Church in Arnor had been torn asunder, and Arnorians had to learn a new sense of reality. Throughout the subsequent decades following the Civil War of the Church, the Kingdom got back on its feet and came together in unity, doing their best for the good of the Kingdom.

The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Arnor are commonly called "The Great Enlightenment" as the rise of the sciences and secularist humanism challenged the thought of the Church, with atheism being popular in Arnor at that time. Many treatises were written on why man ought to abandon religion and trust in what one could see and prove empirically rather than have faith in what could not be seen. In response to such thought, however, renowned Church historian and Doctor of the Reformed Church of Gondor, Tar-Eladian, wrote his famous theological disputation Aeterna Veritas Christi (The Eternal Truth of Christ) in 1776, which remains a classic work of theology and historical analysis of the Christian faith in its defense of the person of Christ.

The nineteenth century brought along the First Great Arnorian Awakening, in which religious thought regained its place within Arnorian piety, and the  Reformed Church even held talks of reunification with Celestis in 1850, with the discussions being unfruitful due to disagreements over Justification, ecclesiastical authority, the Lord's Supper, and the authority of Scripture. many great Protestant Preachers came out of Arnor in the century, such as Charles Spurgeon, a Baptist, and Benjamin B. Warfield, a Presbeyterian. Many would convert to Christianity during this time, and the Reformed Church truly flourished during this time.

The twentieth century wasn't as focused on theology, as the Great War raged around Mundus from 1917-1945. Arnor, however, did not participate in these wars, having always desiring peace after the Civil War of the Church. Arnor watched the world burn, as it were, and remained relatively unscathed after peace was established, having been a beacon of nonviolence to Mundus. Many breakthroughs in Arnorian medicine took place in the twentieth century, with the arrival of vaccines and antibiotics curing many ailments that had previously been considered fatal.

The twenty-first century has brought even more hope to Arnor, as peace and the unity of the nation is at its strongest point since the Civil War of the Church. High King Elendil II must now maintain this peace, and usher into Arnor a new Golden Age.
