George Morris (1835-1847)
1st President of Centralia

Born: 4 Jan 1786, Harriston, VA
Died: 20 Nov 1850, Michael's Ferry, SD
Political Affiliation: Nonpartisan

Description: "Born on a plantation near Harriston, Vandalia, George Morris holds the distinction of being the first president of the Federal Republic of Centralia, but he is not Centralia's first leader.  As a general, Morris was the commander-in-chief of the Army of the Centralian Confederation, which preceded the modern Federal Republic.  The Confederation was beset with problems stemming from a weak central government and strongly independence-minded states.  In March of 1828, having grown tired of the instability of his country, Morris led his troops in a march on Hartford, Pittsylvania, where the government was then located, and proceeded to seize control of the nation.  A new constitution was subsequently adopted and ratified by the states, and Morris was sworn in as the Federal Republic's first president.  A site for a new national capital was selected across the Goldwater River from Providence, Rhedd Island, in 1840; at first, some lobbyists wanted to call it Morristown, after the president, but eventually the name New Providence was agreed upon.  Morris served three distinguished terms as president, and then returned to the military, his work of stabilizing the nation complete.  He died three years later from natural causes while stationed at Michael's Ferry, South Davidia."

Richard Adams (1847-1855)
2nd President of Centralia

Born: 21 Dec 1799, Marblehead, PA
Died: 6 Jun 1867, Hartford, PA
Political Affiliation: Whig Party

Description: "By the time George Morris left office in 1847, Centralian politics had solidified into a two-party system.  The Whig Party, also referred to as the Morrisites (though Morris himself was never a member), represented those who favored a strong central government.  The Federalist Party, by contrast, favored decentralization and power to the states.  Richard Adams, one of the Whig Party's founders, was essentially hand-picked by Morris for the 1846 election, and accordingly won easily.  The Pittsylvania native quickly gained a reputation for simplicity in his governing style, but his second term was rife with corruption.  A terrible judge of character, President Adams often ended up with career politicians in his inner circle, most of whom were more interested in bettering their own situation than in helping the country.  Eventually, fed up with incessant scandals, Adams declared himself done with politics, and he left office gladly at the end of his tenure.  After his time as president, he went back into the practice of law, where he said that he could 'do at least something beneficial'.  Worn out from a life full of argument, compromise, and negativity, Richard Adams collapsed in the courtroom during his final case and died two hours later.  Later that day, the judge ruled in his favor."

Israel Partridge (1855-1862)
3rd President of Centralia

Born: 13 Jul 1790, Innsmouth, NH
Died: 7 Oct 1862, New Providence, FCD
Political Affiliation: Federalist Party

Died in Office

Description: "Israel Partridge, the only son of a Baptist preacher, discovered a knack for public speaking relatively early in life.  His skill developed and matured throughout the years that followed, and by the time the Federal Republic was established he had already gained some experience in politics.  Partridge served with distinction for three years as the second-to-last chief executive of the Centralian Confederation, and was briefly considered for imprisonment by George Morris after the 1828 March on Hartford.  He managed to talk his way out of charges of treason by, among other things, voicing commitment to stabilizing Centralia as a whole.  He later served as Speaker of the House of Representatives during the last years of the Morris administration, and then as House Minority Leader for all of Richard Adams' presidency.  After Adams declared himself unwilling to accept a third term, Partridge secured the Federalist Party's nomination for president in the 1854 election and won by a slim margin.  The Partridge administration was very solidly dependent on its president's charisma and force of personality, and that alone was more than enough to carry the 1858 election by a significant margin.  However, by this point President Partridge was getting along in years, and he became increasingly feeble as his second term progressed.  Finally, only a month before the 1862 election, Israel Partridge passed away, leaving the Federalist Party leaderless."

James Taylor (1862-1863)
4th President of Centralia

Born: 5 May 1819, New Eastland City, NE
Died: 16 Mar 1901, New Providence, FCD
Political Affiliation: Federalist Party

Description: "When James Taylor was selected as Israel Partridge's running mate in the 1858 presidential election, he expected to serve as vice president for the remaining duration of the Partridge administration and then return to his former life.  He definitely did not expect to end up becoming the first man ever to succeed to the presidency due to the death of his predecessor.  As President Partridge drew closer and closer to his eventual death, more and more of the management of the federal government fell on Vice President Taylor's shoulders, and he became more and more resigned to his fate.  At five months, Taylor remains the shortest-lasting president in Centralian history, and he quickly returned to congress, from whence he came, after leaving office.  Though he tried several times throughout the remainder of his life, Taylor never managed to return to the presidency, usually losing at the Federalist Party convention.  He remained steadfast in congress, however, and his nearly fifty years in that body remained unsurpassed for more than a century after his death in 1901."

Michael Adams (1863-1867)
5th President of Centralia

Born: 1 Aug 1820, Marblehead, PA
Died: 17 Jun 1872, Cambridge, MD
Political Affiliation: Whig Party

Description: "The oldest son of President Richard Adams, Michael Adams was considered his father's natural replacement as leader of the Whig Party.  However, going up against the likes of firebrand Israel Partridge meant that he initially fared poorly in presidential politics.  Despite his defeat in 1858, he tried again, hoping to beat Partridge at his own game.  Though his confidence was great, his victory in the 1862 election likely owed a great deal to the incumbent's passing, causing the election to end up being virtually uncontested.  His triumph was short-lived, as the second President Adams turned out to be just as bad a judge of character as his father, and his first scandal, less than four months into his presidency, led to his impeachment early in 1864.  He escaped conviction and probable removal from office by a single vote in the senate, but the experience lost him the confidence of party leadership.  Adams was bumped off the party ticket in a dramatic upset at the 1866 Whig Party convention, and thereafter went into retirement, bitter at the world.  Five years after leaving office, former president Michael Adams was hit over the head and killed in a tavern brawl in Cambridge, Marthaland; when his estate was evaluated, it was discovered that he was so far into debt as to be virtually penniless."

John E. Harrison (1867-1871)
6th President of Centralia

Born: 3 Jan 1821, Providence, RI
Died: 16 Dec 1899, Wilmington, RI
Political Affiliation: Federalist Party

Description: "John Emmanuel Harrison, the first truly post-Partridge leader of the Federalist Party, was also the first state governor to be elected President of Centralia.  He is more notable, however, for having practically won his only presidential election completely by accident.  As the relatively unknown governor of the tiny state of Rhedd Island, Harrison declared his candidacy for president without much expectation of winning the nomination, much less the general election.  Thus, when called upon to give a victory speech at the convention, he had none prepared.  The impromptu speech he subsequently delivered is generally regarded as one of the best of its kind.  As the 1866 election drew ever nearer, Harrison chose not to do much campaigning, being absolutely certain that there was no way he would win.  Without even bothering to read the election results first, he sent a telegram to his opponent congratulating him for a victory he hadn't won.  Once all of the confusion and miscommunication was resolved, Harrison was bemusedly sworn in as the sixth president of the Federal Republic of Centralia.  His single term was marked by impressive initiatives and a large-scale crackdown on corruption nationwide.  Once his four years were up, he quickly and purposely disappeared from the public eye.  Little is known of most of his retirement, but he resurfaced in the last several years of his life as a nonpartisan adviser to presidents Gregory Hayes and James A. Mann.  He died in Wilmington, Rhedd Island, of natural causes while returning to New Providence after conducting an investigation in Pittsylvania on behalf of the Mann administration."

William J. Patterson (1871-1879)
7th President of Centralia

Born: 5 Jun 1830, Antioch, ID (now WI)
Died: 3 Oct 1884, Perrysville, MO
Political Affiliation: Whig Party

Description: "Despite a number of difficulties in his childhood, William Jasper Patterson remained convinced for much of his early life that he was going to one day become president of Centralia.  Born on what was then the frontier to a drunkard and his wife, Patterson quickly learned the value of hard work and keeping one's mouth shut, and these proved to be necessary skills to win him the presidency he so longed for.  In 1870, Patterson was nominated as a compromise candidate at the convention of an increasingly unstable Whig Party.  Despite his victory in the succeeding election, the party continued to crumble around him, and he accordingly entered the 1874 convention unopposed, winning the nomination on the first ballot -- something that had never happened before, even for an incumbent.  The seeming unity of the Whig Party helped him win a second term, but finally, in 1877, it officially dissolved, leaving the Patterson administration without the support of a nationwide party organization.  After leaving office, Patterson accepted nomination for president in the 1882 election on the short-lived New Whig Party's ticket.  His continued popularity was enough to propel him to second place overall, but his death from pneumonia in 1884 and the rise of the Democratic Party ten years later spelled the end of the New Whig movement."

Isaac Whipple (1879-1881)
8th President of Centralia

Born: 17 Dec 1827, Owensburgh, AL
Died: 15 Mar 1881, New Providence, FCD
Political Affiliation: Federalist Party

Assassinated

Description: "Going into his easily-won presidency, Isaac Whipple saw himself as something of a reformer.  He had been interested in politics for about as long as he had been old enough to have at least a rudimentary understanding of it all, and by the time he was grown he found it very exciting.  His first taste of the political life involved a stint as mayor of his hometown of Owensburgh, Avalonia from 1858 to 1866, and he remains almost universally acclaimed as one of the best mayors the city has ever had.  Whipple was something of an unusual politician, what with his tendency to be a bipartisan unifying force.  His appointment as the chairman of the Federalist Party's national committee in 1875 proved fortuitous, as he was able to take advantage of the Whig Party's collapse to strengthen his own position.  His victory in 1878 was practically unopposed, and his intention was to unify national politics in a manner unparalleled in all of Centralia's history.  His 'crusade' was short-lived, however; in an apparent bid for notoriety, President Whipple was killed by a man who still has not been identified successfully over one hundred and thirty years later."

Edmund C. Garfield (1881-1887)
9th President of Centralia

Born: 11 Feb 1835, Youngstown, VA
Died: 8 Jun 1900, Garfield City, WY
Political Affiliation: Federalist Party

Description: "Edmund Charles Garfield was a vain man, and one who was easily flattered.  He may have inherited that trait from his maternal grandfather, who is best remembered for making a series of poor financial decisions based on flattery from dishonest business associates.  Garfield himself was something of a self-made man, though an easily fooled one, and he tended to have excellent fortune in his various money-making schemes.  By the time he was nominated as Isaac Whipple's running mate in the 1878 election, he had become the richest man in Centralia.  This did not, however, prepare him for President Whipple's assassination only halfway through the term.  Opinions vary on Garfield's effectiveness as president, but all agree that he was one of the luckiest men ever to hold that office.  He survived two separate assassination attempts, avoided what would likely have been a major economic crisis, averted an impending war, won reelection in a major upset, and overcame three bouts of the flu and a brief battle with malaria.  Garfield left office seemingly very pleased with himself.  In 1889, he traveled to Wyandot, purchased practically all of the small town of Masonville, and had it renamed in his honor.  He died of food poisoning there eleven years later, still the wealthiest man in the nation".

Gregory Hayes (1887-1895)
10th President of Centralia

Born: 19 Nov 1839, Port Royal, NM
Died: 31 Oct 1898, Hartford, PA
Political Affiliation: Federalist Party

Description: "As a long-time member of Newmarch's state legislature, Gregory Christian Hayes considered himself experienced with politics by the time he ran for president in 1886.  His election, made easier by the old Whig Party's dissolution and the New Whig movement's lack of strong leadership, remains one of the largest landslides in Centralian history.  However, not even initial electoral success was sufficient to promote a successful first term in office for President Hayes, and his presidency was plagued from the beginning by one scandal after another.  Almost in spite of that, the Hayes administration was nonetheless able to secure four more years at the head of government, during which the scandals continued to get worse.  Hayes was talked out of resigning in disgust no fewer than five times by former president John E. Harrison during his second term, but refused to be talked into running a third time.  During the 1894 election, he also refused to endorse the Federalist nominee, judging him to have been responsible for several of the scandals that had so frustrated him.  Accordingly, the Federalist Party lost, and President Hayes entered retirement and obscurity, dying three and a half years later.  His family stated the cause of death to be 'sheer exhaustion'."
