Nation Marks First Anniversary of Remembrance Day Attacks

ST. ELMO'S CITY -- One year has passed since the deadly terrorist attacks of November 11, 2019, that killed 3,803 people across Tytor, injuring more than 30,000 more.  As most of the dead and injured were in St. Elmo's City, national leaders gathered there this morning to mark the occasion.  Present were His Majesty King Michael, Prime Minister Madeline Thatcher, Speaker of the House of Nobles Lord Joseph Cornwallis, and numerous other members of parliament, religious figures, business leaders, and celebrities.  Survivors of the attacks and families of the deceased were invited to a reception held at the Motorola Convention Center and Arena in uptown St. Elmo's City, where the King and the prime minister both spoke.

At the Motorola Center, His Majesty bestowed the Order of Aquilae with Distinction upon hundreds of first responders and regular people who put themselves in harm's way on behalf of those directly affected by the attacks, risking, and in many cases sacrificing, their own lives in the hope that they could save those of others.  Highlighted was Lieutenant Richard Baxton of the St. Elmo's City Fire Department, who witnesses attest made several trips into the north Decapolis Twin Tower, and who is credited with saving dozens of lives; Baxton was last seen heading back up into the building not long before its collapse.

"Few times before in our history," the King said in part in his remarks, "Have we seen such great courage as was shown a mere twelve months ago.  The sacrifices we witnessed, both during these despicable attacks and in their aftermath, provide a great inspiration to all of us.  That day, and the days, weeks, and months that followed, brought out the best in Tytor.  May we always remember the goodness that was shown here, even as we condemn the violence that made it necessary."

Prime Minister Thatcher spoke next, saying in part, "Ours is not a weak nation.  Ours is not a divided nation.  Ours is not a nation easily disregarded or ignored.  As a nation, we stand for truth, freedom, and democracy.  We stand for the liberty and security of our people and of people around the world.  There are some who would discount this, who would relegate Tytor to a mere observational role as Mundus moves into the future.  As we have learned, terror and murderous oppression can strike even here, at the heart of the Free World.  With that understanding, what right have we to take a back seat in world affairs?  What right have we not to speak out when freedom is being denied every day to millions of our brothers and sisters in the human family?  None whatsoever.  We have our faults, to be sure; there are many things that we need to do, to improve, here at home.  But what better way to honor those who lost their lives here to terror, to would-be oppressors, than to stand up to terror and oppression around the world?"

Upon the conclusion of the ceremonies at the Motorola Center, the King, the prime minister, and many of the assembled attendees made their way to the site of the former Decapolis Twin Towers for a wreath-laying ceremony.  The atmosphere was subdued and solemn.  While there has been no formal announcement of plans for the site, the King suggested in brief comments on location that "it might be worth looking into consecrating these hallowed grounds as an official memorial for the victims of terrorism".  The wreath-laying ceremony concluded by midday; His Majesty then returned to Tsargrad from whence he addressed the nation at large.

Additional commemorative events were held across the country, with the largest gatherings taking place in Williamshaven, Christiansburg, and Vigil.  Further coverage of these events, along with the full text of both the King's speech Wednesday afternoon and his and Prime Minister Thatcher's remarks Wednesday morning, can be found online at www.tbs.co.ty.

Rokkenjiman Crown Princess to Attend School in Tytor: Source

TSARGRAD -- Crown Princess Adriana of Rokkenjima is due to attend a private school in Tsargrad starting early next year, a source within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told TBS on Wednesday.  The individual, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press, said that talks to arrange the excursion have been underway for several months.  If true, this would mark the first time a member of the Rokkenjiman imperial family has sought an education in Tytor.

A security official, who also asked to remain anonymous, told TBS that such a venture would cause headaches for security staff beyond what is usual for the education of members of the Tytorian royal family, as Adriana's school attendance would have additional diplomatic repercussions.  TBS reached out to both the office of Sir Gregory Major, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Pyrena Castle for comment.  As of the time of writing, neither had responded.

Assassinated Mayoral Candidate Wins Delayed Election

TSARGRAD -- Recently-deceased former police chief Samantha Weathers has been declared the winner of Monday's mayoral election in Tsargrad, the city's election office told reporters this afternoon.  The election, originally scheduled for November 14th, was delayed following Weathers' assassination in a car bomb attack that has been attributed to remnants of the Tsargrad mafia believed to still be operating in the city.  Weathers remained on the ballot despite her death, as it was determined to be too late to substitute in a different name.  Weathers, the candidate for the Coalition for Democracy, took approximately 51.4% of the vote, edging out rivals Cole Harvard of the Conservative Alliance and Wesley Smethwick of the Popular Front.  Harvard and Smethwick are expected to participate in a runoff election scheduled for January 5th, along with the Coalition for Democracy's replacement candidate, who has yet to be nominated.

Weathers' posthumous victory has been taken as a further repudiation of the past norm of organized crime dictating municipal policy, which is believed to have reached its peak in the 1980s.  This year's vote also marks the first time a woman or a deceased person has won a mayoral election in Tsargrad, and many have already started claiming Weathers' victory as a sign that traditions may be changing here in the heart of usually conservative Tytor.

Murphy House Escapes Takeover Attempt

WILLIAMSHAVEN -- Representatives of publishing company Murphy House announced Tuesday that the hostile takeover bid by billionaire and corporate raider E. H. "Hal" Morgan has been defeated.  The takeover bid, first disclosed in February, was thwarted through the company's acquisition instead by bookstore chain Harper & Lawrence in a "white knight" buyout.  Exact details of the Harper & Lawrence deal have not yet been made public, but a Harper & Lawrence executive confirmed that Murphy House's board of directors would remain in place.  Further details can be found online at www.tbs.co.ty.

Embassy Christmas Displays Go Global

TSARGRAD -- Sir Gregory Major, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced on Monday that the Christmas display set up last year at the Tytorian embassy in Krokom, Nya Åland, will be duplicated at embassies around the world this year.  The late announcement came as decorations have already begun appearing at the Tytorian embassies in Nya Åland and Fleur.  Embassy staff in Krokom, contacted by TBS for comment following the announcement, expressed particular excitement in regards to the banner displayed prominently from the embassy's top floor last year, allegedly in response to a fence erected by Ålander authorities to block street view of a nativity scene erected on the building's front lawn.  "It feels like we're doing our own small part to further the cause of religious liberty on Mundus," Heather Rigsby, a secretary at the embassy, told reporters over the phone, "We may not be able, or even willing, to directly influence government policy here, but I like to think that our display is helping change the hearts of the people in this country, and that's where the victory lies.  If we can convince just one more Ålander of the injustice of their religious liberty laws, I would consider this a success."

Similar sentiment was expressed by George Hunt, an administrative aide at the Tytorian embassy in Cœur, Fleur.  "There's always something to be done," he told reporters, "I'm from Williamshaven, one of the most religiously and culturally diverse cities in Tytor, and every month somebody's celebrating something.  Religious expression adds richness to the urban environment in Williamshaven that you just don't see here in Fleur.  Sure, the architecture's great and all, and the food's simply fantastic, but Fleuroix authorities just don't get it.  You can't have a truly cultured society without freedom to express your beliefs.  I hope this display will help add to the debate here in Fleur.  There's something missing here, and religious freedom, well, is it."

In response to a request for clarification on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that every Tytorian embassy worldwide will be decorated for Christmas, in what a ministry spokesperson described as "a yearly tradition that's just getting started".  This includes embassies in nations seen as Tytorian allies, like Rokkenjima, Achkaerin, and Dartfordia, as well as nations with which Tytor has less friendly relations, like Tamora, Hassfurt, and Centralia.  While no foreign government has yet given a response to this diplomatic development, it is expected that reactions will not be long in coming.

Prime Minister Thatcher Signs MCUR

TSARGRAD -- In a public ceremony on Saturday, Prime Minister Madeline Thatcher formally signed the Mundus Convention of Universal Rights (MCUR).  The move came as a surprise to the Tytorian political establishment, as the Prime Minister had given no indication beforehand of any intention to do so, and the event had been announced as a press conference on human rights abuses abroad.  In a short statement following the signing, Thatcher told assembled reporters that "the time [was] far past for Tytor to join her allies in upholding every right to which a human being is entitled".

"We live in an age when respect for human rights is decreasing globally," she continued, "This is an age when slavery is not only tolerated, but embraced, and attempts are made to spread its institution by gunpoint.  This is an age when nations pride themselves on 'neutrality' and 'sovereignty', while trampling on the rights of those from whom their sovereignty is derived.  In refusing to ratify the MCUR, Tytor has joined arms with such nations as Clysperis, Hassfurt, and Kopsje.  We stand in league with the police state in Centralia and the slave masters of Tamora.  Our nation, beacon of freedom as it is, finds itself sullied by these associations.  Our democracy is tainted as long as we withhold rights and privileges from our fellow citizens for any reason.  Because of this, I urge Parliament to ratify this document, though we will initially be in violation of its terms, so that we may have an ideal toward which to work.  I hold out hope that this nation, united as it is behind a common love of freedom, can rise above the partisan name-calling of modern politics.  We can, and we must, for it is the very future of Mundus which is at stake."

Following the ceremony, Thatcher formally submitted the MCUR for ratification by Parliament, with copies being sent to both the House of Commons and the House of Nobles.  If the treaty is ratified, Tytor will be in direct violation of multiple provisions within its text, including Articles 12 and 13, which guarantee rights for same-sex marriage and gender change, respectively, each of which is heavily restricted in Tytor, to the point of a constitutional ban on any marriage other than that between a man and a woman.  Reactions from within Parliament have been muted thus far, due to the signing having taken place on a weekend.

The full text of the Prime Minister's remarks can be viewed online at www.tbs.co.ty.  This is a developing story and will be updated.

Parliament Rejects MCUR, Elections Scheduled for Late January

TSARGRAD -- In a vote that came as little surprise to observers, the House of Commons rejected the Mundus Convention of Universal Rights (MCUR) on Wednesday morning.  The rebuke to the foreign policy of Prime Minister Madeline Thatcher, who signed the treaty on December 19th, came following a long floor speech in its favor by Terrence Cahill of the United Democratic Party, MP for Foggy Bottom.  "Even as we pride ourselves in condemning human rights abuses in other lands, we ourselves fail to take even the smallest possible symbolic step toward true liberty here at home," Cahill said in part, "Until we are willing to begin the process of putting ourselves into alignment with the ideals of this document, it is and will remain the height of hypocrisy for us to denounce others for the very failures of which we ourselves are guilty.  Tytor cannot both have its cake and eat it; until we are willing to do what must be done, our credibility in the eyes of the world is severely weakened."

Cahill's speech lasted the better part of half an hour, but was evidently not enough to sway the opinions of his fellow MPs.  Ratification of the MCUR was defeated by a vote of 179 to 130, with 11 MPs not voting.  This effectively kills enactment of the treaty, rendering it unnecessary to send it to the House of Nobles for consideration.  Reggie Fortescue of the Tytorian Liberty Party, MP for Rustington-on-Sea, hailed the vote as "a victory for national sovereignty", while Mabel Swann Lithgow of the National Party, MP for Ashton-under-Lyne, called it "a stinging defeat for the forces of rampant internationalism".  Prime Minister Thatcher, meanwhile, told reporters following the vote that "the cause of human rights cannot be slowed by the reactionary attitudes of those who would claim a special status for our nation as a shield for bigotry", suggesting in additional comments that she will continue to push for the MCUR's ratification.

In the aftermath of the vote on the MCUR, Prime Minister Thatcher made the surprising move of calling a vote to dissolve Parliament and hold elections, which passed by a slim margin of 161 votes to 156, with three MPs not voting.  Constitutional law requires elections to be held no more than five years apart; as the last one was held in November 2016, Thatcher could have waited until October to dissolve Parliament, and was in fact expected to do so.  However, she cited the MCUR vote as her reason for calling the election early, saying she believes that "the will of the people needs to be heard in this matter".  The election has been scheduled for January 30th, 2021, and TBS will provide coverage of the election campaign as it proceeds.

Rokkenjima's Crown Princess Adriana Visits Tytor

TSARGRAD -- The Empress and Crown Princess of Rokkenjima made a stop in Tsargrad Wednesday morning on the first leg of a trip that also included Dartfordia.  During her visit, the Crown Princess spent several hours volunteering at a Tsargrad soup kitchen run by St. Margaret's Altruistic Relief Team, and gave a statement to the press before departing for the remainder of her trip.

"Today I saw all walks of life in Tytor: the technologically savvy who follow developments on Twitter and other means of social media to the disadvantaged who rely upon charity to fulfill their needs," she said, "From the every-day Tytorian taking a picture with me to the Tytorian Royal Family welcoming myself and my Aunt at the Royal Palace, from working in soup kitchens to a Royal Palace's kitchen answering to my whims and desires. We can do better, we must do better, for the least advantaged of those amongst us. Following my departure from the Palace, I instructed the Imperial Culinary Staff of Rokkenjima to craft a package of aid to those disadvantaged in the Kingdom to ensure their dietary needs are met. So long as the weakest mouth is hungry, we each have a responsibility to see that their mouth is fed before we even sit at a table, and I'll continue to do all I can to see that goal is met.

"Before I leave, I have always loved Tytor, but we can recognize each nation is not perfect. We can always do better for the least advantaged amongst all of us, and so long as we endeavor to see our efforts towards them succeed, we can change the world. This is why I am establishing the Cross-Straits 'Pay-It-Forward' system, which will see banks linked to the Imperial Rokkenjiman Bank round up all purchases towards the purchase of a meal for one who can't afford it. It's my hopes that this system of forward payment will reach out to all banks throughout the Cross-Straits System, and that we'll see a future where those who have will willingly provide for those who do not have."

The initiatives announced by the Rokkenjiman Crown Princess received almost immediate responses from the leaders of Tytor's contending legislative coalitions.  Prime Minister Madeline Thatcher was quick to praise the proposals, telling reporters that she and her cabinet "appreciate the gesture".  She went on to say that "Princess Adriana is absolutely right.  As citizens of Mundus, we both can and must do more to relieve the suffering of the disadvantaged in our midst."

Former Prime Minister John H. Goodfellow, leader of the Conservative Alliance, took a less positive view of Crown Princess Adriana's visit.  "While I appreciate the sentiment," he said to reporters later Wednesday night, "We do not need these projects.  Tytor is strong enough to fight its own battles, and the Prime Minister's meek acceptance of this foreign meddling is unacceptable, no matter how strong our alliance is with Rokkenjima, and no matter how well-intentioned the interference.  As Tytorians, it is our job, not Princess Adriana's, to assess what our nation needs.  The Crown Princess may have negotiating experience with the Morelanders, but she is still only a teenager, and she needs to leave the actual governing to the adults in the room.  Besides, she has grossly overestimated the scope of the problem she proposes to fix; while there are undoubtedly poor people in Tytor, this is hardly a second or third-tier nation like Clysperis, Merina, or Jugland, where such programs might be more desperately needed."

Popular Front leader Benjamin Morales, MP for Rothbury, offered a muted mix of his two rivals' positions, telling reporters that he was "cautiously optimistic about this whole thing, though I cannot help wondering if maybe we should be doing it ourselves instead of relying on the charity of our Rokkenjiman friends and neighbors".

As of press time, Pyrena Castle had not responded to a request for comment.  Full coverage of the visit by Rokkenjima's Empress and Crown Princess can be viewed online at www.tbs.co.ty.

Polls Close - Several Races Too Close to Call

TSARGRAD -- General election polling places have closed all over Tytor Saturday night following a relatively quiet campaign period.  The election, called by Prime Minister Madeline Thatcher in December after a failed attempt to ratify the Mundus Convention of Universal Rights, has led to what seems to be a disappointing result for the governing Coalition for Democracy.  While around twenty races remain too close to call as of the time of writing, TBS has already projected the CfD's loss of seven key seats to the Conservative Alliance and the Popular Front, with only one seat projected to flip to the CfD so far.  With only a twelve-seat majority heading into the election, the CfD appears to be on shaky ground, and some pundits have already begun speculating that Tytor may see all three coalitions fail to secure a majority at all.  If that were to happen, it is unknown what it would mean for the current party system, as no election has delivered such a result since the coalitions took their present form in the 1980s.

The primary contenders in the push to secure the prime minister's chair - incumbent Madeline Thatcher of the CfD, former Prime Minister John H. Goodfellow of the CA, and opposition leader Benjamin Morales of the PF - have each taken distinct stances on various issues confronting the nation.  Thatcher has touted her record as prime minister as she has pushed more globalistic policies and international norms than her rivals, telling supporters in a rally on Monday that she believe "it is time for this nation to move out of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first".  Goodfellow, in turn, has taken a far more nativistic position than his opponents, calling at a Tuesday town hall event for "a return to basic Tytorian principles of hard work and self-sufficiency".  Morales, meanwhile, has struck a comparatively middle-of-the-road position, calling for many of the same measures as Thatcher, but with a localized focus similar to Goodfellow's emphasis.  As the vote count continues into the night, and likely on into Sunday morning, it remains to be seen which strategy, if any, will emerge triumphant.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Tytor Faces Hung Parliament, Coalition for Democracy Remains Largest Bloc

TSARGRAD -- For the first time since the snap election of 1983, voters in Tytor have elected a parliament in which no one alliance holds an absolute majority of seats.  Early Tuesday morning, electoral commissions across the country confirmed preliminary results which showed the Coalition for Democracy (CfD) losing its governing majority, despite neither the Conservative Alliance (CA) nor the Popular Front (PF) taking control in its place.  Seeing a net loss of sixteen seats, the CfD now has a plurality with 156 seats, and is election night's biggest loser.  However, the CA also lost ground, taking a net loss of three seats and coming out of the election with 112 seats.  This, of course, makes the PF the night's biggest winner in absolute terms, with a net gain of eighteen seats for a total of 38, nearly doubling its parliamentary presence.  The remaining fourteen seats have been divided between various independent and minor party candidates.

A source within the Thatcher administration, speaking on condition of anonymity, told reporters that the prime minister and her pre-election cabinet are discussing potential solutions to the impending parliamentary impasse.  As the largest coalition in Parliament, the CfD will naturally have the first opportunity to form a post-election government.  It remains to be seen whether the CfD will react to the newly-elected hung parliament by inviting one or more of the minor parties or independent MPs into the coalition, establishing a minority government, or attempting to establish a larger multi-coalition government.  Leader of the Opposition Benjamin Morales of the Popular Front posted a statement on Twitter expressing his openness in potentially following the latter option.  This is a developing story and will be updated.

Goodfellow Resigns as Conservative Alliance Leader

TSARGRAD -- Former Prime Minister John H. Goodfellow resigned late Monday as leader of the Conservative Party and, by extension, as chairman of the Conservative Alliance (CA), after results in his former constituency of Tarrenburg West were certified, finalizing his defeat to incumbent Valerie Owens of the Social Democratic Party.  Goodfellow drew attention after the 2016 election when he declined to step down as the CA's head following his reelection defeat to Owens that year.  His decision to remain the Conservative Party's leader was unprecedented in Tytorian politics up to that point, and effectively ceded the title of Leader of the Opposition to Popular Front chairman Benjamin Morales.  Monday night, however, Goodfellow evidently decided that he had had enough.

In announcing his resignation, Goodfellow followed in the footsteps of his own predecessor, Lord Joseph Cornwallis, and refrained from designating a successor.  Accordingly, the Conservative Party is expected to hold a vote to determine its next leader, and, by extension, the next chairman of the CA, which is a post traditionally filled by the leader of the coalition's largest party in Parliament.  Several individuals have already expressed interest in running for the post, including Prince Harold de Tarrenburg, MP for Westham Park, and Sir Reginald Partridge, MP for Tsargrad East.  As the head of the second-largest bloc in Parliament, Goodfellow's successor as party and coalition leader is expected to succeed Morales as Leader of the Opposition unless the CA ends up becoming part of the government.

Satellite Deorbits Rapidly During Recovery Attempt

HIGHMARK -- A mission by SS Albion to recover one of Tytor's earliest and longest-lasting communications satellites ended in failure on Tuesday when efforts to draw it into the spacecraft's cargo bay inadvertently caused it to fall out of orbit instead.  The satellite burned up in the atmosphere over the Karifan Ocean at approximately 2:07 PM, West Albion Standard Time.  Cosmonaut Derek Firestone suffered an undisclosed injury during the accident and received medical attention upon the shuttle's return to Mundus later in the day.  Mackenzie Collins, Executive Administrator of the Tytorian Aerospace Ministry, was unavailable for comment, but a spokeswoman told reporters that "while the loss of the decommissioned satellite was unfortunate, and the injury suffered by Lieutenant Firestone was even more so, the mission was technically successful because it accomplished the removal of space debris from orbit around Mundus", this being the mission's original purpose.  The exact cause of the satellite's sudden deorbit remains unknown at present, but the same spokeswoman said that an investigation would be initiated in the near future.

Coalition for Democracy and Popular Front Reach Power Sharing Deal

TSARGRAD -- Nearly two months after Tytor's most recent general election, the nation has a new government.  Marking the end of 59 days of tense negotiations between two of Tytorian politics' main parliamentary blocs, Prime Minister Madeline Thatcher announced the conclusion of a power sharing agreement on Tuesday between the Coalition for Democracy (CfD), which she leads, and the Popular Front (PF), which gained the most seats in February.  Under the terms of the agreement, Prime Minster Thatcher will retain her position, while Benjamin Morales, leader of the PF, will become deputy prime minster - a position which often remains unoccupied, and which has not been filled since the sudden death of Deputy Prime Minister Neil Colchester in 2002.  Morales, the son of immigrants from Nueva Ardia, will become the first second-generation immigrant to occupy the deputy prime minister's office.  How the new governing alliance will handle the many challenges the Kingdom of Tytor faces in the modern world remains to be seen, but the opposition Conservative Alliance (CA) has already denounced the agreement, with a spokesman telling reporters that it is "a sure sign of the government's ongoing lurch to the left, and a dangerous threat to traditional Tytorian values".  Prime Minister Thatcher's office declined a request for comment on the CA's statement.

Conservative Party Elects Prince Harold Party Leader

TSARGRAD -- The Conservative Party announced Saturday morning that the hotly contested leadership fight in the aftermath of former Prime Minister John H. Goodfellow's resignation as party leader has come to a close.  Prince Harold de Tarrenburg, MP for Westham Park, overcame Sir Reginald Partridge, MP for Tsargrad East, in a close party vote on Friday.  Partridge, who sought the party leadership six years ago when then-Prime Minister Lord Joseph Cornwallis stepped down, was gracious in accepting his defeat to the royal family member and parliamentary freshman, saying, "The party has chosen its leader, and it is my responsibility to support him."  The Conservative Party also announced that Partridge has been appointed as deputy party leader, seemingly as a way for the still relatively inexperienced Prince Harold to benefit from the career politician's expertise.  As the leader of the largest member organization of the Conservative Alliance (CA), Prince Harold is expected to become the CA's chairman, as well as leader of the opposition.  Neither Prime Minister Madeline Thatcher nor Popular Front leader Benjamin Morales responded to requests for comment on the development.

Tytor Progresses Toward Energy Independence

ROSEMARK -- Royal Tytorian Shell announced on Monday that efforts are well under way to maximizing exploitation of the oil deposit found under Lancelyn Bay last year, boosting chances of Tytorian energy independence as the Thatcher administration moves toward weaning the country off of foreign fuel.  Shell CEO Liam Otter expressed optimism that these efforts would be successful, pointing to a cooperative deal signed between Shell and several other Tytorian oil companies - including Allinol, Inc.; Buy-n-Large; Western Energy; Standard Oil of Tytor, the locally-incorporated subsidiary of Rokkenjima's Imperial Standard Oil Corporation; and Albion 76 - as evidence of this.  Some observers believe that energy independence in Tytor is merely a first step that will ultimately lead to Tytor moving off of fossil fuels altogether, but for now, the local dominance of the Tytorian energy market by oil companies remains largely unchallenged.

BY SAMUEL GORDON BROWN, JR -- In 2019, following a referendum, the First Empire of Rokkenjima amended its constitution to remove the position of premier, which was the country's elected head of government.  The office was not replaced, merely removed, and Rokkenjima's empress has acted as head of government ever since.

While in office as prime minister here in Tytor, I paid special attention to our neighbors across the straits, then still laboring under the oppressive Federal Republic (which I shall call the FRR).  On many occasions, I criticized the FRR for its posturing, claiming democracy while subverting the will of its people at every opportunity.  The FRR was a sham democracy, despite its attempts to claim leadership of what it called "the free world", which suspiciously did not include its determinedly democratic Tytorian neighbors.  The cold war between our governments did not end until the Patriotic War led by Beatrice Anselmo, heir to the then-defunct Chrysanthemum Throne, toppled the FRR and restored a popular mandate to the government in Pyrettania.

With this idealistic beginning, it was therefore disheartening to watch as the Rokkenjiman people turned away from their elected government and put their trust in a more absolute monarchy.  Even more so, it was almost heartbreaking to watch as Empress Beatrice allowed it to happen.  Do not get me wrong: this is not to suggest that Empress Beatrice was somehow responsible for the people choosing to dismantle their elected government.  No, nothing could be further from the truth.  But instead of asking her people to reconsider, to give constitutionalism another try, she acquiesced, and permitted the democratically-sanctioned creation of an absolutist regime to proceed.

I say this because that is what Rokkenjima now is.  Sure, important decisions are placed before the people in referenda as a matter of course, but this is due more to the choice of the empress than to anything else.  How easy it would be, when the idealism of Beatrice's and Evanthe's generation has grown old and been forgotten, for some future monarch to simply wipe away the remnants of Rokkenjima's democratic order and rule entirely by decree on a permanent basis.  In Tytor, we have had enough experience with this kind of attitude to have extensive measures in place to prevent it.  While Rokkenjima also has institutions in place which ostensibly could prevent a descent into pure autocracy, they are much younger, far less extensive, and not nearly as robust.  In fact, they best mirror the Tytorian institutions set up after the far of the First Republic in 1910, which were so effortlessly brushed aside by King Richard III in his quest to take the country into the Great War at the side of the Ardian Empire in 1915.

It has long been said that those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat its mistakes.  Empress Evanthe is not Beatrice, and has already proved slightly more authoritarian than her cousin.  Perhaps that is simply the influence of her Seaforthian husband and in-laws, but whatever the reason, it cannot be denied that she has moved away from the elected government of the early Beatrician period.

I feel it my duty, therefore, as one who has long had an outsider's stake in the development of Rokkenjiman democracy, to call upon Empress Evanthe to take appropriate measures to restore the elected portion of Rokkenjima's government.  Give the people back their premier; if they don't trust it at first, put effort into helping them change their minds.  It is not your responsibility to rescue them from less scrupulous politicians - that is what the electoral process is for.  A restoration of elected government must occur, or else Rokkenjima will lose all right to call itself a free nation.

Rokkenjima has, thus far, replaced the authoritarianism of the FRR with a more traditional absolutism.  It is a benevolent absolutism, to be sure, due to the basic natures of each of its monarchs thus far, but it is absolutism nonetheless.  Only with effort can the tendency toward authoritarianism be curbed, and the Rokkenjiman people will have my support every step of the way.

The Hon. Samuel Gordon Brown, Jr., served as Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Tytor from 1992 to 1998.  A member of the Social Democratic Party, he led the Coalition for Democracy following the assassination of Prime Minister Harold Farthingham in 1992.  Mr. Brown served as MP for Washington-on-Ash from 1978 to 2012.  He presently lives in retirement with his wife, Martha, in Washington.  The opinions in this article are his own, and do not necessarily reflect those of TBS.

Parliament Debates Centralia Intervention

TSARGRAD -- A resolution first proposed by Javier Valens, independent MP for Highmark Central, calling for Tytor to lead a CSTO intervention into the ongoing civil war in Centralia, has begun to pick up steam in the House of Commons.  HC Res. 176, which if passed would direct the government to approach the CSTO regarding "the moral imperative" of intervening on behalf of the people of the former Tytorian colony, cleared its first major hurdle by being referred by the Foreign Affairs Committee to the Commons floor on Friday.  Valens, a Commons freshman who often caucuses with the Conservative Alliance, told reporters that he considers intervention in the Centralian crisis to be among Tytor's top priorities.  "We call ourselves free, and fancy ourselves a leader in the world," he said, "But how much of a leader are we really being if we ignore the suffering happening right in our proverbial backyard?  Sure, it's been decades since the Special Relationship died, but that doesn't mean we've no longer got a responsibility to do what we can.  We ought to be getting involved, whether in a peacekeeping capacity or through full on boots-on-the-ground."

When asked to comment on the resolution, Prime Minister Madeline Thatcher expressed doubt.  "The fact is, this move was inspired by Monday's FMN story," she said, "There's so much we don't know, and Mr. Valens would have us rush blindly in, never mind the consequences.  I, for one, shall not be supporting it."  Leader of the Opposition Prince Harold de Tarrenburg and Deputy Prime Minister Benjamin Morales both declined to comment.  This is a developing story, and will be updated.

Decapolis Twin Towers to Be Rebuilt

ST. ELMO'S CITY -- The St. Elmo's City Council voted on Saturday to approve a proposal by the St. Elmo's City Development Board and the 11/11 Recovery Commission to rebuild the Decapolis Twin Towers, as part of a project to help the city recover from 2019's Remembrance Day terrorist attacks.  Albert Ratzenberger, spokesman for the 11/11 Recovery Commission, told reporters that the decision to rebuild won out over other proposals which would have memorialized the Towers in other ways.  "Even now, more than two years after the attacks, St. El's feels like something is missing," he said "Where once there was the city's greatest landmark, there is now an unmistakable void.  Some of the proposals we received included single-tower designs, large museums or concert venues, and even a few more or less empty lots.  We on the commission came to the conclusion that the outright reconstruction of the Twin Towers sent an important message: that we here in Tytor, and particularly in St. Elmo's City, refuse to be cowed by terrorism.  You may be able to knock our buildings down, but we will rebuild them, stronger and more durable than before.  While we're still looking at the details involved, the Twin Towers will return to being an immediately recognizable part of the St. Elmo's skyline."

The winning proposal was submitted by Norman Yale Construction Enterprises, an architecture and construction firm based in St. Elmo's City which lost several employees on 11/11.  When reached for comment, a spokesperson said only that NYC is "proud to be a part of the recovery process".  A spokesperson for For a Better Tomorrow, one of NYC's main competitors and a prominent part of the reconstruction of Aquilae, confirmed that the company had submitted one of the rejected bids, but otherwise declined to comment.

House of Commons Approves Centralia Resolution

TSARGRAD -- In a 206-112 vote, the House of Commons voted to approve HC Res. 176 on Wednesday, formally calling on the Thatcher government to approach the CSTO regarding an intervention in the ongoing Centralian civil war.  As expected, the vote drew support from the overwhelming majority of the Conservative Alliance, who made up more than half of the vote in favor; what was more surprising was the fact that most of the Coalition for Democracy voted in favor as well, flying in the face of Prime Minister Madeline Thatcher's earlier attempts to distance herself from the movement.  After the vote, the Prime Minister briefly expressed disappointment with the actions of her colleagues in the Commons, before departing on a previously scheduled trip to CSTO headquarters outside Pyrettania.  Foreign policy experts consider it likely that the CSTO will vote in favor of some sort of intervention, though the exact form that will take is difficult to predict.

Kyne Fleet Deploys, Heads North

PORT MONSOON -- The Admiralty confirmed reports early Thursday that several vessels of the Royal Navy's Kyne Fleet departed Port Monsoon for deployment in the north of the Sea of Kyne, seemingly as a follow-up to Wednesday's House of Commons vote in favor of involvement in the Centralian civil war.  The deployment includes the aircraft carrier HTMS Monarch, along with assorted escorts, and follows news of an Imperial Rokkenjiman Navy deployment in the same direction days earlier.  The carrier group's mission remains unknown at present.  This is a developing story, and will be updated.

Opinion: Those Who Frame Interfaith Dialogue as a Competition Are in the Wrong

BY RICHARD VALANCE -- In recent days, much has been made of perceived oppression of some faiths by others, as well as debates about relative ages of faiths and their abilities to call themselves "traditional".  In particular, much has been made of a practice among Rokkenjimans of faith to syncreticize Rosarity with other faiths like Christianity or Islam.  With so much impassioned debate exacerbating traditional divides between faiths, I feel it to be my responsibility to set some things straight.

First, I shall spend some time addressing the complaints by some that the current world order is "too liberal", especially in regards to things like women's rights.  This has been a debate for decades, so it is not a new thing.  It was once socially permissible for Tytorian husbands to control most if not all aspects of their wives' lives; since the 1960s, however, Tytorian culture has shifted toward equality between the sexes, and now most men and women in Tytor would find the idea of a husband having that much control over his wife to be abhorrent.  Clearly, the 1960s did not have quite the same effect on other countries like Samantra or Rayyu, and traditionalists in these countries likely see themselves as justified in protecting what they see as womankind's rightful place in society.  The Emir of Rayyu is, in fact, perfectly justified in reminding the world that men and women were created by God in different physical forms and given different roles.  Where he is not justified is then using that fact to justify restrictions on the rights of women.  As the Bible says, "neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord" (1 Corinthians 11:11).  As the Apostle Paul taught, men and women are both part of God's plan, and that means that, even though they are not the same, they are equal, and as such deserve equal rights.

Second, I want to address the controversy that has recently enveloped those whom the Rosari call the "hyphenated" - those who embrace Rosari principles on top of their adherence to another religion.  As a strong Christian - the formal head of my church, no less - I find it a little disturbing that fellow Christians would choose to abandon the purity of their faith like this.  I am solidly of the opinion that, as Jesus Himself taught in the Sermon on the Mount, "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other" (Matthew 6:24).  Some of my parishioners have expressed a worry that this is, in fact, the Rosari faith's intent with the practice of hyphenation, that those who choose to hyphenate their Christianity or their Judaism with Rosarity will one day be compelled to drop all but the Rosari values that they have adopted.  I cannot comment on intent; I can only comment on what I see as the inevitable spiritual result of trying to balance two faiths, and that is confusion at best, going up to outright apostasy and a renunciation of Jesus and His teachings at worst.  The Rosari are somewhat mistaken when they say that truth is universal.  Yes, it is, but not in the way they mean.  Jesus Himself is "the way, the truth, and the life: no man [or woman] cometh unto the Father, but by [Him]" (John 14:6).

Third and most importantly, I want to address the tendency toward competition between faiths that has triggered the two controversies I have just touched on.  This "us versus them" mentality has caused many problems in our modern world, from the Rosari/Christian conflicts in Rokkenjima, through the Odinist supremacist policies of Nya Åland, to the present organization of pro- and anti-Abrahamic conferences in different countries.  This is a mentality which will undo the gains we have made over the years in our attempts to lessen interfaith conflict in the 21st century.  As Grand Maester Yuna has reminded us, there were attempts to stamp out Rosarity in prior years, but that does not excuse intolerance toward Christians today.  As the Emir of Rayyu and the Patriarch of Samantra have noted, there have been attempts to suppress Abrahamic faiths, but the answer is not intolerance in our turn.  Most countries are not Fleur or Nya Åland, where only one or even no faith is tolerated.  We can live in harmony with one another, even if we do not agree with the opinions of our neighbors.  As long as we do our level best to serve whichever God or gods we believe in, we have no reason to complain about others doing the same.  It is not our place, whether we be Christian or Rosari, Muslim or Helusian, Jewish or Odinist, Manist or Namist, to dictate to others how they must worship, insomuch as the dictates of their consciences do not lead them to harm or oppress others.  We are all children of a loving God; let's allow those around us the same consideration we wish for ourselves.

His Eminence Richard Valance has served as Archbishop of Tsargrad since his election in 1991.  His tenure as the head of the Church of Tytor has been marked by such milestones as 2011's Tytorian Interfaith Council, which established the ecumenical dialogue which has governed interfaith relations in Tytor in the years since.  Archbishop Valance resides in Tsargrad with his wife, Katherine.  The opinions in this article are his own, and do not necessarily reflect those of TBS.

The TBS View: Ofdensen's Populism Threatens Global Security

BY THE EDITORIAL BOARD -- In the recently concluded Rokkenjiman elections, the newly ultranationalistic Centre Party, led by convicted war criminal Charles Ofdensen, has secured the most seats in both houses of the Imperial Diet.  Mr. Ofdensen's pre-election rhetoric focused heavily on perceived grievances toward other countries, particularly ones with which Rokkenjima has had tensions in the past.  This prompted a rare rebuke of a civilian politician by Pyrena Castle, which issued a statement saying that "this is the very rhetoric which caused great diplomatic upheaval for the First Empire in the past and must be challenged each time he opens his mouth to spew it."  What this means for relations between the monarchy and the elected government is impossible to say, but Mr. Ofdensen's election certainly will have a measurable impact on the international stage.

It's hard to tell at present whether the Centre Party's electoral success is a fluke, or indicative of a broader trend in Rokkenjiman politics.  Certainly the last few elections have seen massive swings in political control; the former ruling party, Teikokutō, lost 166 seats in the House of Commons in this election as its one-time coalition partner rose to political dominance - but not long ago, and certainly within recent memory, the chamber was dominated by a coalition between the Socialist Party and the Green Party, now the two smallest parties in the Diet with barely a hundred Commons seats between them.  But with all this upheaval, what does Centre's victory mean for the world in 2023?  That much is easy to answer.

Charles Ofdensen, the disgraced former Vicegerent of Rokkenjima, has scored a comeback the likes of which are rarely seen on Mundus.  This comeback was built on heavy use of populistic nationalist rhetoric of a similarly rare nature.  He promises retribution against foreign enemies, real and imagined, painting Rokkenjima as the victim of some vast international conspiracy.  This would be bad enough in a country like Phuebra or Centralia, which are small fish in a big pond, but this is Rokkenjima, the globe's second-largest economy and a formidable military power in its own right.  Rokkenjima's word carries weight across Mundus, regardless of the opinions of its detractors, so when things happen there, the world feels it.

What this means for Mundus, and especially for those countries in Rokkenjima's immediate vicinity, is simple.  With Mr. Ofdensen at the helm of the imperial government, Rokkenjima is in the process of changing from a symbol of regional stability to a source of instability.  If Mr. Ofdensen has his way, Rokkenjima will go from working to build world peace to actively seeking to undermine it.  The security of the Kyne is at desperate risk thanks to Mr. Ofdensen's brinkmanship, and the knock-on effects of instability in the Kyne threaten the security of the rest of the world as well.

Tytor is uniquely placed, just across the Strait of Arovium from Rokkenjima.  It enjoys a strong, mutually-beneficial partnership with its cross-strait neighbor, commonly referred to as the Special Relationship.  In addition to a more general risk to regional and global security, Mr. Ofdensen's hypernationalism puts the Special Relationship itself at risk.  He vows vengeance against any country that has the gall to tell Rokkenjima what to do; how long before he turns his vitriol against Tytor, and Rokkenjima's other allies?  As the world enters this dangerous period in its history, we must take comfort in the fact that he is restrained by the need to keep a coalition government together.  May the Green Party exercise the power it has as Mr. Ofdensen's coalition partner to rein in his worst impulses, for the good not only of Rokkenjima, but of the entire world.
