Viljandan-Ny Åland Relations
« on: November 15, 2017, 10:34:26 AM »

Dear Head Gothi Daniel Stenberg

It is with a great honour that we invite you and relevant members of the cabinet of the Odanist Republic of Nya Åland to the Union of Viljandan Socialist Republics. Our nations may differ ideologically, but it is with hope and in the spirit of friendship that we can reach some agreements on trade opening embassies and visa reduction for both of our peoples.

Yours Sincerely

President Anja Goraen

9:45am, Tuulekaabel, Viljandi

Tuulekaabel International Airport Terminal

President Anja Goraen, General Secretary Maksim Jokūbas and Sonja Gaulm were waiting at a private terminal at Tuulekaabel International Airport. The Greeting party consisted of those three and at least 20 secret service guards. The airport was constantly bustling even in the late and early hours ogf the night and early hours of the morning. They had government vehicles to escort them to the Executive Pearl Manor.

“I must say, this foreign policy emphasis on peaceful neutral pragmatism seems to be working.” President Goraen said to Secretary of State Sonja Gaulm.

“Well I just thought that our country needs more allies, and trading partners. Also did you get that trading forecast I sent you last night ?” Asked Sonja

President Goraen replied” Yes, but I haven’t had a chance to look at it yet. I had to sort out a dispute with some backbenchers regarding our bill for campaign finance reform regarding how it will effect lobbying and workers unions.”

Secretary Gaulm chuckled “Oh that whole mess. I don’t envy you… Also where is Maksim?”

President Goraen replied “Oh he’s with customs trying to organise the process of hastening the inspections of our guests cargo. He wants to hasten the inspection so our Ny Åland counterparts, he doesn’t want them to be caught up in bureaucracy. “

OOC- Sorry missed this

The Head Gothi was rather excited, he'd travelled recently to Marseille to visit President Papin, but they were a nation that he knew would be an easy visit, after all the man had fought side by side with the President and his men. Viljandi however was an unknown, even his advisor Birgit Strand knew little about them, but as she kept telling him that was half the fun. Stein Ulfsson watched out the planes window as they passed over the city, it didn't look to dissimilar to somewhere like Krokom, a real mix of old and new buildings and it even looked rather green, he'd have to try and find some time to visit one of the parks, he always enjoyed the summers in one of them in Krokom where he would sit and read one of the saga's or a poetry book.

He had been reading one such saga as the aircraft landed and the old leather bound book was wrapped up carefully in a rune covered cloth and placed in his briefcase. As the battered black briefcase snapped open he spotted his old teachers ID badge still in along with an essay he'd clearly forgot to remove, it was entitled "The use of religious imagery in modern literature." written by a S.Rahmberg, he recognised the students name and instantly his eyes spotted three spelling mistakes in the first line, almost instinctively his hand reached towards his suits breast pocket to remove his red pen for marking. It was gone, replaced with a nice black and gold fountain one his children had brought him for his new job. "Better get this sent back" he smiled as he put it down on the table.

The pair exited their aircraft and made their way through the airport until they were presented with President Anja Goraen and her entourage. "Madam President, May Odin Bless you this wonderful morning. I trust you and your friends are well. This is Birgit, our foreign minister, she's here to make sure I don't mess up too badly." he waited for Birgit Strand to say hello before continuing. "Now it's tradition that we present a host with a gift" he put his briefcase down and removed the cloth covered book. "This is a 300 year old copy of the Grettis Saga. It tells a story of a famous outlaw who becomes one by accident, he defeats a famed warrior in battle and during his feast accidently burns down the mead hall killing his King. He becomes the longest surviving outlaw in our nation, dying in bed of old age at 100 years of age having defeated a dragon the day before. It's full of funny adventures, and advice on how to live ones life in a positive way. It is my daughters favourite bed time story....or was....she's too old for all that now." he handed the book over, its creamy parchment like pages bound by the dark leather. "I hope you get the chance to enjoy it as much as my family has. "

President Anja Goraen Smiled and replied” You don’t say? It sounds like quite a treat,  I’m sure my grandchildren would like to hear such epic tales, also give us an insight to the culture of Ny Åland. It is nice to meet you Your Holiness. “She firmly shook his hand and carefully took the book of sagas. She then introduced the Head Goth to Secretary of State Sonja  Gaulm.  “Ah yes this is Sonja Gaulm our Secretary of State, a position which is basically the same as your Foreign Minister. She is here to make sure I don’t mess up as well.” She said while laughing casually”

Sonja as usual giving off her calm and casual smile. “It is rather nice to meet you Your Holiness. I Hope your journey wasn’t too taxing. I know it is some distance away, and hello Miss strand. I look forward to working with you. “

“As do I” Said Maksim Jokūbas the cabinet General Secretary. “Sorry for the delay. I was with customs, just solving some bureaucratic business..” President Goraen introduced both the Head Gothi and Foreign Minister to Maksim Jokūbas “Oh yes, this is the Cabinet General Secretary Maksim Jokūbas, he is the one that I corordinat with  in administering the day to day functions of our government.” Maksim siled and politely shook the hands of the two digniraries” An honour to meet both of you.”

The President then spoke to both dignitaries.” Now It is hoped that I can get both of you back at the excutuve Pearl Manner before the mid-morning rush hour, there is some matters we wish to disscuss,  issues such as a possibl FTA, visy free agreements, fficially opening an embassy, and also showing you other parts of the nation. How does that sound?”

It was Birgit who responded, they had discussed on the flight over that once serious talks began regarding treaties or the like that it wold be she who took the lead. " We are always open to trade agreements, however it has to be the right one, you have to remember we are in the process of rebuilding our nation, as such our economy is in a delicate balance, we must ensure our home industry remains protected and has a chance to re-establish itself. As such a completely free trade agreement may not be possible, but there are other ways we can explore to promote commerce between us. Visa's are a less pressing concern, our nation is always happy to receive guests and I know our recent scientific programmes have attracted attention from around the world, we'd be happy to see for example scientists from Viljandi coming to see our Large Hadron Collider, algae farms and space programmes for instance, as I'm sure they'll be things people from our nation will find of great interest here. On our side we've always looked to promote scientific co-operation and as such visa agreements could be a useful tool in that. But that can wait, at least until we reach your venue."

"I hope we do not come across as reluctant, the disaster that befell Uppsala has a great impact on our nation both physically and economically. We are also dealing with the fact we are seen as emerging from the collapse of the Union of Nordic People, but we're already working with several partners, so it should hopefully not take much more to return us to our former days." the Head Gothi added.

Anja Goraen replied. “Of course, the last thing we want to do is force a treaty or rush your nation. We understand that after the collapse and organisation of the UNP into what is tody Ny Aland takes time. After all it took us at least 2 dace to reform after we toppled our dictator in the 70’s. Different circumstances however. We have some cars to take us to the pearl manor. We can discuss further there.”

They hen were driven to the executive official residence of the Pearl Manner.

Then they were then shown to the meeting room.

Sonja Gaulm then spoke “Now before we officially get started do you people wish for anything, refreshments, some food or light snacks. Don’t hesitate I can have the kitchen whip up something at your convenience. “

The President then then presented their first agenda “Alright. Your Holiness, as your head diplomat has advised us your economy is rather delicate, we understand the situation, after all privatising and opening up too fast can be more trouble than its worth, we have seen this happen before with our energy sector, that’s why we had to nationalise it the first chance we made our second round of reforms. So with that in mind, economically what sectors do you feel confident in for some trade agreements? Not overall free trade, but just some sectors you think would benefit us both. I would usually defer this type of thing to my Secretary of Commerce and Industry, but she informed me on the way here that she will be late as she is currently being held up at the moment with parliamentarians.”

"For the time being we would look to protect our manufacturing industries, as such we purpose a gradual reduction of tariffs in this area. Perhaps over the next five years?" Birgit began, "However things such as agricultural products we can loosen up almost immediately, we have an abudance in some areas, such as fish, however since the destcrution of some areas of the east things such as our arable production has been hit hard. I think also we'd have very little issue opening our nations service industries up to companies based in your nation, on a like for like basis of course."
