Grass Roots
*Long Sniff* "Ahhhh...that's much, much better". His holiness, The Young Pope Peter II became a busier man ever since he was elected by God and the Cardinals to lead the One True Apostolic, Celestian Catholic Church and its faithful from the demons, like how a shepard needs to tend to his own flock of lost sheep away from the wolves. Although initially he thought that it wouldn't make much difference than he was just a mere cardinal attending to his own congregation, it quickly dawned upon him that being a Pope is truly such a hectic and stressful job, how on Earth did his predecessors manage to handle this chores and duties? Certainly for him prayers weren't just enough to calm him down and make him relax, unfortunately whether he liked it or not, he found something ingenuitive that surprisingly was quite effective to begin with...FRANKINCENSE...instead of pot-smoking! Heck yes!

Sure it is an integral part of religious and spiritual ceremonies around the world, but did you ever notice that unique calm instilled by the smell of incense? It turns out the smoke of frankincense can measurably relieve the symptoms of anxiety and depression, whether or not it was still considered a sin was up to between him and God alone TYP thought. There he was lying on that bed in his bedroom, after a long day of serving the masses and the Lord, after endless hours of praying and celebrating mass, giving all of the most holy sacraments to any believer deemed to be worth of them, combatting heresies and blasphemy, meeting the youth, the old, the sick, the crippled...the list goes on and on. At last when it made him so calm and peaceful in his broken mind...with the last huffs and puffs from the tray containing smoking hot iincense, he slumbered in, tucked neatly and nicely in bed and....began to

*Alarm clock ring-dinging* "GAH!...Oh, t'was just a silly dream...full of banal platitudes hehe...or? The Young Pope, looking slightly confused in the early morning as to whether that dream was sanctioned by the Divnity, the Frankincense or a combination of both, he let out a breath and wanted to snooze, but realised that as Pontiff the day was just starting for him, a long day like every other one he lived through, as dawn was rising over the Vatican, and it was a soft, pink light tinged subtly with shades of orange and gold. Acrobatic doves who made their homes in the vast colonnade in St. Peter’s Square, which had atop its columns statues of the Holy Saints, dashed to and fro, cooing gently. Lines of pilgrims and worshippers had already begun to queue next to the basilica’s great bronze door, awaiting entrance into the tomb of St. Peter himself and the holiest acreage in Catholic Christendom. From inside this holy of holies came the polyphonic chant of many monks and nuns performing Lauds, the monastic prayer which greeted the rising of the sun:

When Pope Peter II opened one of the bedroom windows to let in a fresh breeze of air gush through, “Benedictus Dominus Deus Israel; quia visitavit et fecit redemptionem plebi suæ,” sang a hundred Benedict monks and Cistercian Nuns in perfect unison, the differece in octaves creating profound wave of spiritual music:

*In English the Lauds may be translated as: “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel: for He hath visited, and redeemed His people; And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us: in the house of His servant David; As He spake by the mouth of His holy Prophets: which have been since the world began; That we should be saved from our enemies: and from the hands of all that hate us; To perform the mercy promised to our forefathers: and to remember His holy covenant; To perform the oath which He sware to our forefather Abraham: that He would give us, That we being delivered out of the hands of our enemies: might serve Him without fear, In holiness and righteousness before Him: all the days of our life. And thou, child, shalt be called the Prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways; To give knowledge of salvation unto His people: for the remission of their sins; Through the tender mercy of our God: whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited us; To give light to them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: and to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

"I wonder what the Lord has prepared for me today?" he asked while looking at the blue sky.

Cataclysmus Cirripedia I

The Vatican Secret Archives is the central repository in the Vatican for all of the acts promulgated by the Holy See. The Pope, as Sovereign of the Ecclesiastical State and having primal incumbency, owns the archives until his death or resignation, with ownership passing to his successor. The archives also contain the state papers, correspondence, papal account books, and many other documents which the church has accumulated over the centuries. The Vatican Secret Archives have been estimated to contain 85 kilometres (53 mi) of shelving, with 35,000 volumes in the selective catalogue alone; the oldest surviving document dates back to the end of the 8th century. In the 17th century, under the orders of Pope Paul V, the Secret Archives were separated from the Vatican Library, where scholars had some very limited access to them, and remained closed to outsiders until 1881, when Pope Leo XIII opened them to researchers, more than a thousand of whom now examine some of its documents each year; One of these many researches on such a day was the famous and legendary Archaeologist and Adventurer Sir Emmanuel Fava.

Normally he would be out in the field, fighting bad guys, retrieving stolen and forgotten treasures as well as saving the day like his Achkaerinese colleague Melanie Bell. However he's a Colleage Professor as well and this was the time when Fava himself was living the 'normal' life, unlike his fellow Fava members he was a great man of intellectuality like his Twin Cardinal brother Emilé and a devout Bene Gesserit til' the last breath, although he admitted that assuming a different religion gave one special perks that could be advantageous, and the history business overall is a fun and exciting line of work, potentially every day discovering new things and subjects as well as changing the Mundus as we all know it. In any case, he paid a visit to the Secret Archives as part of his research, being a regular attendee and more than welcome to scour through the endless amount of documents from all historical eras, which was certainly something that an ordinary historian couldn't possibly dream of...as if he felt that a a little boy entered a candy shop filled with delicious sweets and treats.

It was just past 10 AM in the forenoon as the daily 9 AM Fika, had come to an end and something which was utterly..."Shit, Sir...I can't fathom the sanity of the man calling such 'pastry' for fika, tasted more like overchewed cardboard if I had to be brutally honest, dear Lord almighty." exlclaimed Fava's closest Friend, Historian, Archaeologist and Museum curator Sir Samuel Edmonton, a peculiar yet fascinating man he had developed over the years as any native Doverian the 'perfect' fika in mind and it is considered for anyone, especially a native of this land, to completely botch an fika attempt to begin with, spoiling conversations of private and professional matters. "Well Sam, luckily the Coffee saved the beginning of the day hehe." Fava replied, not paying much attention to 'minor' cultural peticularities such as Fika when it came to the choice of pastry, but nonetheless a nice cultural institution anyhow for those couple of minutes of break and chit-chat.

The two men were scouring through the early 1800s section, so far nothing of interest and relevance for their respective research considering both were more attuned for earlier history. It was at this moment when Fava stumbled across a set of documents from 1813, during the reign of Pope Pius VII. With his white gloves, the professor carefully placed it on a table next to his notebook as well as a computer where one could gain access for the entire database, the myriad of those 35,000 volumes. With a gentle hand, opened the volume and shifted page after page; everything seemed to be in relative order and nothing spectacular of an atomic bomb explosion. "Wait a minute..." Fava said quietly without alerting at first Edmonton, who was busy himself with a volume. The professor started to read a document pertaining to some sort of declaration, written in both French and Latin, alluding to the former Heyran Empire during the reign of Queen Héloïse II, whom Pope Pius VII was infatuated in according to rumors. "Oh God...Sam you gotta see this...never in the millionth chance...simply astonishing...!" Fava called upon his friend, pointing at the exact declaration: The Ecclesiastical State acknowledged and recognised the Heyran legitimacy on Barnacle Island after all.

"The Pope must've done so to further legitimise the Heyran claim on Barnacle, after all this is how the world of politics work...besides, it's predictable considering the Pope's love he had for Heloisë or so what the rumors tell us. We do know that his holiness Peter II signed a treaty with the Heyrans without giving support, they could've said something but if we assume the most possible reason to be the fact that the Allies bombed Heyra and Bellfaye city to the core and thus annihilated the Heyran copies of the declaration plus the fact that it apparently became unknown to later Popes when the declaration was kept in an undisclosed location and any archivist didn't bother to tell due to the perception of unimportance." Fava tried to come up with logical ideas as to how this Island dispute never seemed to involve the Ecclesiastical State despite the close ties with the old Heyra. Both professors nodded as they came to a conclusion. "You do realise the implications of this discovery when we present this to the Pope? I mean it wouldn't hurt to make this invisible once more..." Samuel tried to act like a snake but Fava stood his ground and knew where his principles lied.

"Yes I think I understand more than enough the large implications and consequences, but we can't kid ourselves Sam; Whether or not we like it, whether or not it'll lead to an positive or negative future, this declaration needs to be shown to his holiness at all costs. From there he may decide, with the aid of God if he so wishes, what must be done for the benefit for all, we're after all historians and the truth and transparency must prevail." Fava said, finally his 'normal' life outside adventuring was raised to a new level, he couldn't possibly wait for what was to happen. Pope Peter II's reputation as an unstable diplomat was either to be shown once more or something else entirely...were the Ecclesiastical State voice support for the Heyran claim on Barnacle with the risk of disturbing the regional balance? Only time would tell...

"Alright, think it's the moment for booking a meeting with the Pope..." Fava said finally.
