Frozen North Neigbours (Ach and Griss)

An Invitation to the Griss Confederacy

To the Council of Elders of the Griss Confederacy,

It is not often that I get the opportunity to write an invitation such as this to a fellow 'frozen north' territory, my nation and your alliance appear to be the only two not presently engaging in some form of isolationism, the Crown and Government of Achkaerin would like to extend their condolences to Princess Aerila on her recent bereavements. I would also like to take the opportunity to extend an invitation to your nation to visit Achkaerin so that we may hopefully begin to build a lasting relationship between ourselves.

Yours in friendship

Emperor Peter Azurewind

A Reply From the Office of the President

To Emperor Peter Azurewind

It is a great honor to receive your invitation. And I will be sure to extend your condolences to the Princess, I'm sure she will take comfort in them. Unfortunately, the Council of Elders are currently presently engaged in other matters. As such, it became my responsibility to hold you correspondence. But I too am engaged in domestic matters that prevent me from taking you up on your offer. But it has been agreed on that we will send the last Harbinger, Lady Emo, in our place. I look forward to hear of the fruit of your talks.

In Peace

President Maz

Cheryl Holmes walked the length of the VIP arrivals section at Empress Djana International Airport in Valtheim for about the tenth time in the space of five minutes, an international visit always threw up all manner of logistical matters but when it was a first contact situation that bar was raised a little bit. As Minister for the Diplomatic Office her job was a simple one in this situation, meet and greet the guests and then escort them to the Marble Palace to meet the Emperor, it was a job she'd done many times before and she knew it well. She could see the approaching plane making its final approach through the large windows of the terminal, she looked around and got the nod from the airports chief of security. Brushing her hair out of her eyes she headed to the arrivals gate to await the arrival of Lady Emo.

Lady Emo pulled her robe around her. It was a simple dress, in the style of a Cadre monk, except for being the dark scarlet color of the office of Harbinger. The robes were cut with silk for beauty and cloth for warmth. With a few deliberate gestures the robes could go from being baggy and flowing to tight and constricted. It was a trick that had a number of uses, adaptation for weather being the most overt one. She chose the former as the cold air of day hit her.

Lady Emo's bones felt stiff and cracked as she existed the plane. It was a long flight, international travel outside of the Confederacy was rare. Few Grissin, much less a woman of her years, would be comfortable making the journey across the northern coast of Aranye. Aranye, the southerners' word for the continent. Although the Achkaerinese weren't really southerners. At least not technically. Their reaching out was fortunate for Maz. The Decree of Northern Supremacy banned political connections with the southerners. Any domestic protest by the Council to this visit could be argued by the geographic location of the Holy Empire.

As Emo walked down the jetway she considered how she came to be in this foreign land. She was the only living Harbinger, but her Archon was long dead. None of the Council of Elders thought to ever include her in their discussions. And such was their right. President Maz was a different matter. He often consulted with her, although it was mostly for his benefit- she gave him advise on the interworking of the Council. Something he was not privy to. In return she got to feel important and included. As the years went by, it was a kindness she appreciated more and more.

Emo shook her head and wondered if any of the Twin's Avatars had dealings with the Azurewind family in the past as she entered the gate and walked up to Ms Holmes.

Cheryl waited patiently as she went through everything one last time in her head. Smiling she took a step forward and met Lady Emo.

"Lady Emo welcome to Achkaerin, I'm Cheryl Holmes the Minister for the Diplomatic Office. Which is a rather fancy way of saying I oversee Achkaerinese embassies and ambassadors and meet delegates from abroad such as yourself." Cheryl said hoping the comment did its job as an icebreaker "I hope you had a good flight here." she led Emo through the airport and out to a waiting car, it was probably glaringly obvious that the Emperor's recent announcement regarding his health had created a scenario where he was having to be a little more careful but Cheryl was happy that she hadn't had to mention it.

The destination was unsurprisingly the Marble Palace, the main residence of the Achkaerinese Royal Family situated in the heart of Valtheim the palace had plenty of open space for the younger Royals to run around in, surrounding grounds that were ideal for exercising the horses in the Royal Stables and of course a large garage for the Crown Princess's supercar collection. The car drove up one of the more isolated roads to the main gate where the Emperor Peter Azurewind was waiting. He smiled when Cheryl brought Emo over to him.

"Lady Emo very nice to meet you." Peter said "Please come this way." he stood aside and guided Emo into the courtyard.

"Emperor Azurewind, the pleasure is all mine." Emo thought to give him a short bow, the precedent had existed before when Grissin dealt with Talaos kings and Emperors, but she thought better of it. Better to pretend to be the Emperor's equal. Well maybe they were in equals in their representing of their nations. And the Confederacy would bow before no outside nation. "But please, call me Mae, mother. It's want everyone calls me. I've reached the point were I'm told old to be a lady." Emo laughed at her own joke.

Emo admired the courtyard, it reminded her of her childhood, before the days of being the Harbinger. When she was part of the Traetor family. "Oh before I forget, Princess Aerila sends you her thanks." She looked intently at Peter Azurewind now. In an instant hoping to size him up in this moment, hoping for the possibility to see the man underneath whatever masks he might wear.

"Very well then." Peter said as the sound of a car engine turning over echoed out from the direction of the garage, Peter sighed "Sorry about that." he continued once the noise had subsided "My daughter is one of Mundus's biggest petrolheads she's entering our annual speed festival in a few weeks so she's decided in between her other duties to work on her teams car."

To get out of the occasional noise Peter showed Emo inside the Palace and then to the library.

"I hope you won't mind us talking in here, for some reason I always prefer meeting in here rather than my study, must be the bookworm in me." Peter said "Books are to me what supercars are to my daughter so I've got a lot of the collectible ones on these shelves, personally I love a good mystery novel." he took a breath to refocus on the task at hand "My hope is that today we can put in place the building blocks of a lasting relationship. Can I offer you a drink before we begin?"

An intellectual. That's what she made of him. A man that liked to solve puzzles. "No, I don't mind at all. In the Confederacy it is said the smaller the meeting place, the weaker the deal. Of course it is more of a reference of backroom politicking but the sentiment remains. As for that drink, a water would be lovely, thank you."

Emo took a breath, sizing Peter once more. "Azurewind, I think you'd prefer a straight shooter, so I'll get to the heart of it. International relations in the Confederacy are blocked by the Decree of Northern Supremacy. But there are some officials that aren't fans of the old law. I am here as a emissary of this camp. Interestingly the Decree specifies southerners, not foreigners. The Decree may be revoked tomorrow, or it may last another decade. Who knows. But Achkearin has the unique position of not being a southern nation. As such, it is in the unique position of being one of the few nations that no matter what the Confederacy can deal with. If you intention is to create the building blocks of a lasting relationship, then I echo these intentions. The North should stand together."

Peter took a moment to digest what Emo had said, it was a rather interesting situation to say the least. He smiled a little.

"I quite agree the North should stand together." Peter said "So perhaps the appropriate place to begin is to explore what possible arrangements we are open to. I believe logically we might be best to consider establishing diplomatic agreements concerning embassies. I'd like to see an understanding whereby if for example the Achkaerinese leadership were to ask to see your ambassador that such a meeting occur within twenty four hours, of course such an understanding does require that we have ambassadors. Would this be something that you would be open to?"

Emo nodded. "We would be more than amenable to such an agreement. A lasting relationship is built on understanding and trust and those only come from open and honest communication." In many ways this conversation reminded Emo of her time among the Cadres. As a White Lily, she spent her teenager years traveling between Cadres as a sort of emissary. It was a happy time in her life, before the days of being a Harbinger, before she had to surrender her happiness to serve. It was a price she didn't know she'd be paying. And she wondered if she had known if she would have paid it.

"In addition, the man leading the political camp I represent, President Maz of the Nova Republic, would be most unhappy with me if some sort of economic agreement were not reached. Perhaps an opening of trade, maybe free trade for the prosperity of the north?"

It was Peter's turn to nod now. The subject of trade was something that had been expected and it was a matter that raised one issue but these days the Achkaerinese Government was well practiced in protecting the CSU's market without needing an exclusion based approach.

"I'm sure we can work come to some agreement in that regard." Peter said "However I am required at this point to explain that any such trade agreement would need to be on the Achkaerinese part isolated from the Cross Straits Market. What I'd suggest is that we make the basis of a trade agreement that the provisions only apply to good manufactured in our respective territories with a certificate of origin provided. This way we both get what we're looking for, would that be acceptable?"
