National Summary
Etymology
The nation's name comes from one of the founders of nation. As such the name Community of Zamenhuf quiet literally means what it states.
History
This was for my old region. Naturally it will change.
In the 14th Century the adventurer Karl Zamenhuf was granted permission to go and explore unclaimed lands on behalf of the crown. After several months he was ready to go and accompanied by three other ships set sail. Around three months later the ships found a bay and a sparsely populated region. With this region largely being made up of nomadic tribes Zamenhuf left a small force there and returned home to report that they had a chance to establish a colony there. However upon returning to his homeland it was discovered the King had died and his tyranical brother had taken the throne. Zamenhuf had the new King had a long history of mistrust and hatred dating back to them both courting the same Duke's daughter. Instead of offering the land to the new King Zamenhuf simply filled his boat with fresh supplies and offered voyage to anyone wishing to accompany him. He was joined by fellow disgruntled adventurers Simon Kurzon, Peter Menoval and Henri Costanau who each arranged their own vessel. Without informing their King they headed off and returned to the newly discovered region. Each of the adventurers established their own outpost and the four are today collectively known as the Pre-Kings. Over the first five years however tribal attacks, failing crops and various other disasters saw the groups numbers dwindle however the territory under the leadership Zamenhuf succeeded. This was largely due to the fact that while Kurzon, Menoval and Costanau had tried to keep old institutions from their homeland alive Zamenhuf had created a new blueprint for his followers. Old titles of nobility had been removed and redistributed due to merit. Furthermore Zamenhuf had recruited travellers from many nations which had passed by looking for trade routes and had created a vibrant community. As such by 1387 only the territory of Zamenhuf remained and Karl Zamenhuf, despite being King in all but name, held open voting for a formal King. He stood against a man called Benjamin Rostafe and Henri Costanau and won easily gaining 80% of the vote. In the months that followed he put in place some key principles that the nation should run on.
With territory back home seeing the monarchs convert to Christianity, often at the swordpoint of invaders, many sought to flee and as such Zamenhuf became a safe haven for those following the worship of the Goddess Orphne. In 1394 King Karl the Founder died at the age of 72. He left behind instructions that his eldest child, Prince Sigmund should become King and this rule has been observed since.
The nation has often offered refuge for those facing persecution or war and as such has become rather multi-cultural and multi-racial. Today the nation has Queen Anne-Marie Van Asch as Head of State, she is related to King Karl the Founder through her maternal line as very distant cousins.
Demographics
While the nation is very multi-cultural and multi-racial it does have a majority of Caucasians. During the 15th Century it saw an influx of Black settlers who brought with them their own languages and culture. In the 17th Century a series of crisis in Zimalia saw refugees flee to Zamenhuf and they established communities on the coast. There was an expectation initially by this group that they would return home following an end to the crisis however most determined that they would stay and make a new life in Zamenhuf.
Despite the worship of Orphne dominating life in the nation other religions have been welcomed, not always problem free. Christians from Vanora arrived in the 1500's escaping problems. Initially these Christians kept themselves isolated and then initially attempted mass conversions. This was frowned upon and they found themselves ostracised by the rest of the population until St. Carston arrived and helped integrate the community.
Various other religious and social groups have arrived over the years in smaller numbers.
Population
Today the nation has just shy of 50million inhabitants. The nation is split 60% urban and 40% rural with high quality soil producing a bounty of food for the population. The population are highly educated as the Orphne faith and the cultural make up of the nation push educational success.
Government
The nation is a Constitutional Monarchy. The monarch represents the nation in all foreign affairs while a Prime Minister handles all domestic affairs. For a law to change the Prime Minister must first get the approval of the 213 member Council of the People. Once this is done the Council of the Nobles must also give approval. Should legislation fail to pass this hurdle the Crown Minister for that area of legislation must draft a response to the Prime Minister outlining reasons for rejection. The Prime Minister can either ignore this or amend the legislation to accept the advice. If he rejects the response then a new vote must be called in the Council of the People, this new vote however must see "substantial changes" from the initial draft, the determination of whether it is "substantial" is made by the Minister for the Council who is appointed by the monarch from a short list given by the Prime Minister. Should legislation pass both houses it becomes law when the monarch signs it, they may however refuse to do so which places the legislation on the twice annual referendum programme.
The monarchy is heriditary and based on age. The eldest child of the sitting monarch inherits the throne, if no children exist then eldest sibling, then cousin, then nephew or niece. Should the monarch have no relatives then a public vote takes place with any member of the Council of the Nobles being permitted to seek election.
The Council of nobles is open for any person who holds a title of nobility. In Zamenhuf titles of nobility are not automatically inherited. Upon appointment to a title it is often given a set number of generations. Any family may register an interest in becoming nobles and are granted the right to be called as such should they demonstrate "dedication and commitment to Zamenhuf, its monarch and its success." A system of points exist and once a family reach the threashold they are granted a title of nobility the monarch can determine for how many generations the title may be held. A family gains points for things ranging from gaining University degrees, completing apprenticeships, military service, having children, paying a set amount of tax and such endeavours as winning Mundus Games Medals. When a family have just one generation of inheritance left on their titles they may begin accumulating points for being made noble again.
The Council of the People is open to anyone over the age of 30 or with a University degree. They must be born on Zamenhuf soil or have come from a family that have been nobles for two generations. A system of first past the post exists with the nation split into roughly even seats in terms of population. Votes take place every four years however should 20% of a community demand the recall of the representative then a vote takes place sooner. This however is very rare. The individual with the most support in the Council is invited to be Prime Minister and this is usually the leader of the largest political party however you can be elected without being a member of a political party.
Government Ministers are appointed by the monarch and approved by the Council of the People. They need not be members of any Council. The exception to this is the Minister for the Council who is appointed by the Monarch from a shortlist given to them by the Prime Minister, this must contain at least three names and they may not be a member of any political party.
Foreign Relations
They maintain a policy of reciprocal trade tariffs for any nation that meets the countries standards in regards to working conditions and health and safety. Any business wishing to trade in Zamenhuf must initially gain a Certificate for Trade which see's them initially inspected to ensure they meet standards and then leaves them open to spot inspections.
The monarch is responsible for maintaining all foreign relations
and has formed some close personal friendships across the world.
Economy
The nation has a thriving maritime industry both in terms of construction, merchant shipping and fishing. Seafood is considered a staple of the national diet. The nation has always attempted to stay on the cutting edge in terms of technology and as such has a vibrant industry in software related industries. The nations largest software house Ilamar is responsible for developing much of the software.
The nation lacks its own large scale reserves of oil and gas however has achieved an element of sufficiency with developments of synthetic alternatives. This however still does not fulfil the nations needs.
The nation also has a large scale modern farming industry and is also well respected for producing textiles.
