Just Another Day

The Mhorish was always a relaxing place to be, it was calm, picturesque and for the most part usually trouble free, against this backdrop the INS Sharingan cruised along, it was a standard patrol mission en route from a layover in Revana back towards home up north. The ships CO Captain Yuki Tyler stepped onto the bridge pulling on her uniform jacket, it was a little warm outside after all.
"Anything interesting?" Yuki asked
"Not really just another day in paradise." her XO Commander Beckett said, Yuki glanced around the bridge it was a well knit crew she had serving under her.
"What's our current position?" Yuki asked
"Right here." Beckett said tapping the interactive table otherwise known as the "Tactics Table" that captain's on Achkaerinese vessels used "Steering well clear of the CNN exercises."
"Good." Yuki said "Keep a wide berth and let's do our job."

Then it happened an urgent message flashed up on the electronic tablet that Yuki had on the table it was an alert regarding a statement from the Royal East Moreland Press Office
"Oh boy." Beckett said
"That's one way of putting it." Yuki said she sighed the ring she wore on her right hand well within her eyeline, a reminder of her status as one of the small group of naval officers the Emperor had trained, it wasn't like this sort of thing hadn't been covered. First things first get the ship clear of the imminent threat and see where the chips fell, she took a couple of moments to think it through "Lt Nesbit set course north west let's get out of this things path if we can bring the speed right the way up."
"Yes ma'am." Nesbit said
"Commander Beckett sound condition blue through the ship." Yuki said
"Aye skipper." Beckett said, soon the light bars that ran through the vessel were all gently pulsing blue as the ship picked up speed "Worried about this boss?"
"Yep." Yuki said "An hour to get to a safe distance. Let's make it happen."

The Formula Mundus season of 2018 begins with several questions - can Sam Halliday put all that media speculation and personal issues out of his mind and concentrate on defending his title? Will Megan Harrison regain her throne as champion? Or will a new name join those two? It's sure to be an interesting ride as pre season testing and then the season itself unfolds.

Current Standings

The three pre season testing circuits will be the Celestis Grand Prix (ES), the Royal East Moreland Grand Prix circuit (EM) and the Grand Prix de Brianna Azurewind circuit (Gowu). These will take place fairly quickly after which the race weekends (qualifying and race) will occur weekly unless stated otherwise.

It was a relatively nice day in northern Quintelia, the students from San Manuel High School were enjoying a days field trip out learning some archaeology, it was bit of a roadshow as there was a lot of advice and stuff going on as well. The person in charge was Melanie Bell, the young Countess of Elsion and young gun archaeologist not to mention the head of echo archaeology, why was she giving the field trip? Well her late father had been pretty good friends with the high schools English teacher a certain Marco Miranda so when he'd called her up and asked for some help she'd pretty much agreed without much thought. She'd just finished demonstrating some basic techniques and was taking a few minutes break to have a drink of water.
"Having fun?" someone asked, Melanie glanced over and saw Maki Hamer standing there.
"Shouldn't I be asking you that?" Melanie asked "This is your part of the world after all."
"Nah I'm just along for the sunlight and because someone had to run your security." Maki said
"Mel." the voice of Nicolas Mackenzie, one of Melanie's employee's caught their attention "You need to see this."

Melanie and Maki made their way over to where Nicolas was crouched over an open hole, there was the upper portion of a skeleton there.
"We didn't bury that." Melanie said, part of the preparation the previous day had been burying several random things in the fields where they were that way the kids had something to find.
"No we didn't." Nicolas said "Are we thinking this is suspicious?"
"Call the police out and let's get the bones dated. Let's be sure we're dealing with either a murder victim or archaeology." Melanie said "Mr Miranda." she turned to where the teacher was standing "I think class just got cancelled."

A week later they were back, the results had come in dating to the second half of the ninteenth century so late 1800's. That made it without question an archaeology find and a dig. Melanie wasn't one to turn down that opportunity either, a little negotiation with the locals and they were set. Another of the group Lori Downing had the fields and surrounding area mapped using satellite imagery which she was then filtering to account for various things.
"Look at this." Lori said "There's a medium sized structure under the middle of that over there." she pointed "And plenty of other stuff, this is huge."
"We're going to need help." Melanie said "Nicolas see if you can find someone who knows the local area let's see if they can shed some light on what we might have found. Lori call the CETO we need help."
"Are you calling that Fava fellow?" Lori asked
"After last time? He had people pointing guns at me." Melanie said
"You got past that thought right?" Maki asked "How about you call him and if he turns up with an armed army I kick their ass?"
"Deal." Maki said "Nicolas you handle the locals."
"Got it." Nicolas said

Melanie took a few steps away and dialled a number she'd never imagined she would, but what the heck had she stumbled into this time?

The Cathedral was packed, which fair enough was a normal occasion given that there were many acts of worship a day due to the significance of the Cathedral as the end point of the Pilgrimage route, but this was a little different this time there were more unlikely candidates sat in the pews. At the front of the Cathedral were three chairs, only one of which was presently occupied this was by Alexis Minette, the High Priestess of the Cult of Namis, the native religion of Achkaerin. Martin had to chuckle as he led the Pope down the aisle this was going to be amusing - both Alexis and the Pope were formally addressed as 'Your Holiness'

"Your Holiness Alexis Minette" Martin said "May I introduce His Holiness the Pope." Alexis couldn't hide the grin, she'd had the odd dinner with Martin and heard the stories of the man before her.
"Good to finally be able to put a face to the name." Alexis said "Your seat is the one between mine and Martins."

With everyone seated, Martin stood up to address the assembled congregation.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the Cathedral of Santiago, welcome to the Inter Faith Forum." Martin said "We were hoping to have Hannah Barker the Priestess of the Cult of Helus here today, however she has been taken ill this morning with a bout of food poisoning, so you've got myself, the High Priestess of the Cult of Namis and our special guest today all the way from the Ecclesiastical State, his Holiness the Pope who we have persuaded to participate today, the format for those of you attending one of these for the first time is a small devotional act of worship followed by a short address and then the question and answer session. And as he is here myself and the High Priestess would like to personally invite the Pope to say a few words before we open proceedings."

The sun shone down on Redwall Castle in the Vafleon Capital of Oakshield, it was a big day for the Silverwood family, for the nation of Vafleon, the Commonwealth of Eswen and also probably for Mundus itself as a new Monarch would be crowned. Princess Catrain walked the halls of the Castle it was mostly deserted save for the staff but the majority of the family were already making their way to where they had to be that day which was the Cathedral just down the imposing and picturesque Chivalry Mile, the streets lined deeply with citizens hoping for a look at any of the Royals, it was according to the television coverage she'd seen so far the same story around the square where the Cathedral stood, only the well wishers there were probably hoping to see the likes of some of the more famous names on Mundus's international stage. She wouldn't disturb Manius until she needed to, her older brother needed all the time he could get to compose himself.

Over at the Cathedral, the meeting point for the event, letters and notices had been sent out to clarify this, Queen Isabel Silverwood, soon to be Princess in recognition that she was no longer the regent, walked up the aisle towards the building's entrance, all was in readiness, the crown jewels safely brought and under guard. She could still remember the day her husband the late King Richard had been crowned in this very place, though she'd watched from the sidelines that day, and now the baton was passed from father to son. She wasn't Manius's biological mother she was the step mother to the eldest five and true mother to the youngest four. She took one last glance around the Cathedral, the other Eswen notables were there, the key players were there it was time to get their game faces on. It was time to welcome the world.

With just one day of competition left it is confirmed that Nya Aland will whatever happens on the last day finish at the top of the medal table, this is due to Nordmar not competing in the Short Track Speed Skating so therefore they cannot increase their medal tally. There are six medal events left so a maximum of six golds available (Bandy as a demo event doesn't medal this year) with the next teams in the medal table on 10 gold  medals and Nya Aland on 17 golds the difference is too great so Nya Aland's gold in the women's short track 5000m relay gives them top spot.

Mark Sharpe, strode into the Military Defence Initiative's operations centre at Ashai Castle, the home of Achkaerin's military intelligence bodies. Standing there waiting at a round table were the MDI's operational chief Lt Colonel Kara Thornton and her second in command Major Matthew Kirby

"LISA has signed off on operations against the Hand of Emet." Mark said he handed a folder to Kara who looked at it, it was the associated paperwork from the HQ but there was such a thing as making sure things were in order.
"What's the word?" Kara asked
"Rokkenjima's asking for more intelligence which once relayed through the LIA should make its way here." Mark said
"What have Rokkenjima asked for?" Matthew asked
"They have permission to hit two Hand of Emet strongholds and commence a ground campaign." Mark said "They want to hit the LDC with sanctions and stuff as well."
"So we get planning." Kara said "Wait for the intel and figure it out from there."
"Yep." Matthew said "Richard what's the Lakhzovia lie of the land?" he was addressing the senior analyst Richard Weaver
"CNN forces comprising East Moreland and Ui Cenneslaig personnel have got McBadger airfield which they're protecting for now from Khaliniz brigades while evacuating civilians out of there." Richard said "Lakhzovian Government has started arresting people associated with Prefecture which is itself believed to be associated with the Hand of Emet."
"Is there any way of doing this without intruding on their air corridor?" Kara asked
"Probably not." Matthew said "The only alternative would be to breach Lakhzovian air space over areas still held by the Khaliniz which may incur extra risk."
"Figure it out." Mark said "I've got to get back to Valtheim for an emergency meeting with the Emperor."

Kara looked at Matthew
"We need to know how long whatever operation we plan and gets agreed to is going to take timewise." Kara said "And then we need to approach East Moreland and Ui Cenneslaig and ask them ever so nicely if they can give us that window."
"Well even supposing they agree to all this what do you want to do?" Matthew asked
"I want to send a message loud and clear that the cold blooded murder of civilians is not acceptable, I want to send a message that breaking the Uppsalla Convention has consequences." Kara said "Samuel what can we do about the data and the server?" she was looking towards the resident computer genius Samuel Freeman
"Well if Rokkenjima can provide the details of where that server is then we might be able to do something along the lines of a cyber attack." Samuel said "Of course if Riviere hurried up with the Chidori missile..."
"You have any idea how delicate that thing is?" Kara asked "Cameron do you have a list of assets committed to the situation i.e. those presently sitting in Somerset?"
"Here." the armed forces liaison officer Lieutenant Cameron Gallagher said handing Kara an electronic tablet.
"Good." Kara said studying it "I want to know as soon as Rokkenjima has intel on their prospective targets." Kara said "Meanwhile call the Designated Officer and ask her to come down here."
"Seriously?" Matthew asked
"Seriously if we're sending a message then let's make it heard I'm asking for Morningstar authority." Kara said

First Impressions

It was the big day, even with the Atlantis project's preparations this was a big day because the Virgil probe was on final approach to the Keaclite asteroid. Mission control was a buzz of activity as Nicola Fernley, the director of flight operations, stepped into the room
"How are we doing Vicky?" Nicola asked
"Everything looks good." Vicky Acheson the agency's mission strategist said "Virgil's on course and target's in sight."
"Remember this is just a scout for Homer." Nicola said "We stat orbiting Keaclite and we get as much information on it's topology as we can, then I guess you go and figure out a landing site for Homer."
"I did write the mission profile." Vicky said
"Of course you did." Nicola said
"Then why remind me?" Vicky asked
"Keeps me sane." Nicola said

"Boss." one of the techs said "We're locked and ready."
"Initiate burn." Nicola said
"Primed and..." Vicky said "Burning."
"Put Virgil in orbit Vicky." Nicola said, at this point Nicola's boss Gary Hale stepped into the room
"Where are we up to?" Gary asked
"Orbital establishment." Nicola said "How's your day been?"
"Meetings about the Phoenix and Atlantis." Gary said "You?"
"Forward planning the training program for Atlantis." Nicola said "It's going to be a fun few months."
"I look forward to the meeting." Gary said "Do you still want to keep Rhongomiant in the wings?"
"Can't do anything with that one until we've got a clear shot." Nicola said

"We've got orbit established." Vicky said
"Ellen?" Nicola asked looking towards Ellen Sharpe, the head of the science department.
"We're initiating the scanning down." Ellen said, Nicola smiled
"Good job." Gary said, he high fived Nicola, that was more their thing than a congratulatory handshake "Next step?"
"Vicky." Nicola said "Put Homer in motion."
"You got it." Vicky said

The sound of the crash was likely not that loud but it sure felt otherwise as the two APC's smashed through the gates of the Presidential Palace, Sally felt the rocking motion but that was really the easy part of this thing, the hard part? Well that was about to begin, the ASF troops knew they'd just likely woken the entire building so they had to work fast, first job get inside, Sally made her way to one side of the door as gunfire rattled out from inside.
"Boss." Craig said "What's the play?"
"Storm the place." Sally said "Craig your team take the entrance, Wes ground floor sweep, I'll take the upper floor."
"Copy that." Craig said, he sucked in a breath and nodded, Sally and her team began giving cover fire as Craig and Sapphire troop made their way into the entrance hall, bullets were flying left and right, the radio call's made it all the more hectic.
"Grenade." Sally said, she threw a grenade in at the grand looking staircase at the far end of the entrance area, this was the dug in enemy position, the explosion seconds later did most of the job.
"This is over give it up!" Craig shouted towards the enemy position, Sally bit her lip it was a tense few seconds until a white hankerchief was waved.
"Secure them." Sally said "Wes ground floor give them a chance to surrender, Ruby troop on me."

Sally led Ruby troop up the stairs to the second floor, now they were inside the playing field was a little more level, gunfire continued to echo through the building to the point where Sally was seriously wondering what the refurbishment cost was going to be once this was all over.
"That's it." Sergeant Reed, Sally's second in command, said "President's office."
"He's got to be in there." Sally said "General Siraaj el-Kamal."
"He's a reasonable man by what the guys we've been fighting with have said." Reed said
"Ok hard and fast, kick the door, take him alive and get him to stand what's left of the Phuebran professional army down." Sally said, the sooner they only had to worry about insurgents the better.

The door didn't put up much of a fight as Reed forced it then came the flashbang from Sally and finally the entry.
"Hands in the air!" was the demanding shout of Sally and Reed as they entered, it was complied with
"We've got the ground floor." Wes's voice came over the com "Stronghold secure for now."
"Hold perimeter and fortify, move the prisoners to a secure room and place them under guard." Sally said "General el-Kamal, I am Lieutenant Colonel Burton on behalf of the coalition forces in this country I offer you the chance to surrender, let's stop the bloodshed."

Cassandra sighed as finally the Pegasus came within a few thousand metres of the Gypsy Dancer most Achkaerinese Captain's didn't much like playing taxi driver but there were exceptions and this situation was one such occasion.
"Ok that's it." Paul said "We're where we want to be."
"Good." Cassandra said, she picked up the radio "Attention Gypsy Dancer I repeat attention Gypsy Dancer this is the INS Pegasus approaching you from the south west" she took a deep breath knowing that she was about to deliver the wake up call "The Count of Saika requests the presence of his fiancee immediately." she clicked off the radio

"Not bad." Paul said "Think they'll comply?"
"Well Count Ravenswood doesn't seem too flustered about this whole thing, almost like he knows something no one else does." Cassandra said "Send the Stymphalia to pick her up and her alone."
"You got it." Paul said "Why was that the decision from the Count?"
"Because he's thinking about the other aspect of this at the same time." Cassandra said "Helm bring us to a thousand metres from the Gypsy Dancer and come to a full stop."
"Aye Captain." the helm officer replied.

Amy and Josiah were in for a bit of a surprise when they arrived back at the castle, waiting for them in the grounds was Emerson and behind him stood a Stymphalia helicopter
"Are we going somewhere?" Amy asked
"Yes." Emerson said he handed her his phone "Twitter."
"This means absolutely nothing and you know it." Amy said "Imagine if Iona was missing instead of dead, what do you think Peter would have done if she'd turned up to find him married to Renee?" Emerson nodded he knew the answer to that.
"Let's go." Emerson said "I don't think Josiah ever thought his first time on a helicopter was going to be anything like this."
"I'll keep an eye on him." Amy said

The destination for that helicopter was the INS Pegasus a Riviere class destroyer assigned to the Achkaerinese presence currently based in Somerset due to the Lakhzovia situation, it had been an easy enough job to issue the order change and send the ship north towards Seaforth. Standing on the bridge of the vessel was the Captain Cassandra Asquith, or 'Cassie' to her friends, in honesty she was grateful to actually be doing something other than sitting off the coast of Somerset on tenterhooks.
"Stymphalia is aboard ma'am." one of the bridge officers reported
"Thank you Lieutenant." Cassandra said "Do we have a fix on the Gypsy Dancer at all?"
"Yes ma'am." her XO and husband Commander Paul Asquith answered tapping the computerized map image on the table, it was a feature of Achkaerinese military vessels that the bridge had a small circular shaped table somewhere, usually in the centre that had a computer built in, allowing things such as satellite images and other data to be displayed and looked at, in this case Paul was looking at a map of the area and tapping the position where the Gypsy Dancer was registering as its location.
"Helm set an intercept course at 35 knots." Cassandra said
"Aye Captain 35 knots." the officer manning the helm said
