"Bluest eyes theres ever been
Like sunshine on the ocean
Sweetest smile i've ever seen
And her black hair
And the golden sands
We danced until the morning
And felt the warm southern breeze
In the summer island air"

Thomas sang merrily as he strummed away on his small harp, a handful of the crew stood in a circle around him, the odd few from Alemba joining in what was one of the songs from their homeland. The odd beaker of rum was being passed around and clearly a few had imbibed more than their fair share and now capered and danced a few steps encouraged by the others. Up on the Poop Deck of The Insolent Captain Braithwaite rested his right hand on the rail looking down on the main deck and tapped along with the tune. His second in command Commander Parrish appeared beside him like a ghost he seemingly just appeared. "Sir, the Doctor wants you to know Billy Maffey will pull through, he'll never climb the mast again but he'll live.....assuming no infections. Doctor says he never made a sound when they cut his arm off. Brave lad." Just six hours earlier they'd fought what was for many of his crew their first skirmish, a Seleucid 24 gun Merchantman that they'd ambushed from an Albion cove. They'd chased her down and then exchanged fire for a while before managing to break one of her masts, then Braithwaite had boarded her. The Captain and his Marines had swarmed onto the enemy deck and stormed through them as the rest of the Insolent crew had used muskets to fire onto the deck. Billy Maffey, a four year veteran of the skirmishes with the Seleucid had taken a flying piece of wood to his arm and by the time Thomas and another youngster had dragged him back aboard the Insolent it was hanging on by the thinnest of sinnews. Thomas had got caught up in the moment and found himself following the Marines when he should have been manning a small gun on deck, his gun chief had chastised him and said it was only the fact he'd saved Billy's life that he hadn't been flogged for deserting his post.

"When we get to port make sure Billy gets off-loaded, take money from my locker to make sure he gets sent back home.....he's from Gustavia isn't he?" Braithwaite prided himself on knowing his crew well and Billy had been with him a long time.

"I believe he is, was a fisherman when he signed up. We'll be landing in Castries though sir." the two islands where the opposite ends of the Paracambian Empire. "Not sure how many ships there are that will take him."

"They'll take him or I'll bloody thrash them. Lads a hero Parrish, I want him looked after ok?" Parrish nodded that he understood the Captains' orders it was a sure way to ensure your crew loved you, Braithwaite often told his 2nd in command that and Parrish absorbed every word keen to learn and one day hopefully take control of the Insolent himself, or maybe another ship if Braithwaite refused to move upwards something the senior man had turned down once or twice keen to stay at what he called the sharp end of the battle. Braithwaite firmly believed that if his men saw him looking out for them even after their usefulness was gone then they'd follow him anywhere and it was largely true. "That new lad, I think his names Thomas, you know the one with the harp."

"Thomas Bickermann" Parrish informed Braithwaite.

"Aye, good strong voice, seems brave too. He was over onto that Seleucid vessel like a rat up a drainpipe" the pair chuckled, "Send him to my ready room once he's done singing" Braithwaite turned away from the rail and made his way down to his room which had a door off the Quarterdeck, some of his veterans joked about him coming down to dance and ever keen to enjoy the crews jokes the Captain capered a few clownful steps as he made his way into his quarters earning a loud cheer from his crew, he stopped turned and removed his hat using it to bow dramatically as he turned and closed the door. He could still hear the music as he sat down and as the light began to fade began writing letters. They had lost five lads during the attack, another four would probably die before they reached port and yet another ten would never fight again, Braithwaite dipped a quill into a pot of ink and turned to the report he had written of the battle. He wrote neatly, "Billy Maffey today gave an arm for the freedom of others" , above his name were various entries listing the dead who had given their lives for freedom and several others who had lost limbs. Next Braithwaite began writing to the mothers of the deceased, he had no idea if the lads had living mothers but it was a necessary duty. He knew most of them wouldn't be able to read themselves but a local priest or preacher would always be willing to help and whichever Gods they prayed to would be quick to offer their support he was certain, after all they were doing the Gods work.

"Dear Mother Kingsley" he began the next letter.

"It is my sad duty to tell you that poor Wesley has today given his life so that others may have freedom. Your son was part of an attack on a Seleucid vessel from which we freed sixteen slaves whom we are now bringing back to our homeland. These 16 people will no longer wear the chains of slavery and that is thanks to Wesley. He was a brave lad and did his duty to the very end. I will miss him and so will my crew. He was a cheeky chap, full of smiles and laughter. His very presence on a stormy night made the winds feel a little softer.  The Empire of Paracambi today gained new citizens while losing one of its greatest. I have enclosed what personal possessions of his we had onboard and his final wages, though that will never be enough. If you require anything please do not hesitate to contact my staff.

It was a privledge to command a hero such as Wesley.

Your humble and thankful servant

Captain Jebadiah Braithwaite
INS Insolent"

Just as he placed the quill down their was a knock on the door, "ENTER" the Captain yelled as he watched a nervous Thomas walk through the door.

"You wished to sir me Sir" the young musician stood his cap in his hand looking at the deck, he thought the Captain had perhaps heard of his desertion from his post and was about to get punished.

"Indeed I did Thomas" Braithwaite came and perched on Thomas' side of the desk. "I heard you got Billy back to the surgeons, good work. I'm pretty sure Billy had crossed onto the other ship, but that can't be true as otherwise you'd have disobeyed orders to man a deck gun wouldn't you?" He watched Thomas splutter for words. "Oh be quiet" he continued, "I know what its like to be in your first battle, the nerves, the excitement and the confusion. You did what had to be done and thats the sign of a good soldier. So I'm having you reassigned, you'll no longer be a deckhand, I'm making you a Marine. You'll start off as a Corpsman, fetching and carrying ammuntion, clearing the wounded and the like, meanwhile Sergeant Greaves will train you how to fight. That sound exciting?"

There was a broad smile on Thomas' face. He'd signed up to free slaves and while he knew he'd be doing that while a sailor there was something exciting about the Marines. Yes it was more dangerous but it was also more adventurous and his father had worn the red jacket proudly. "Yes sir. Thank you sir" Thomas stood up straight seemingly having grown a few inches. "I'll make you proud sir." he added.

"You did today, well done. Now run along and leave the door open. Play something sweet when your back outside." Thomas replaced his cap, saluted and turned, "Oh and Thomas, tell everyone extra ration of rum" Thomas nodded and headed back outside soon there was a cheer as the news was relayed and then Braithwaite heard three cheers, he assumed earned from the rum ration increase, his men had done well today and they deserved it but he knew their fight was not over. Today they'd freed a handful of slaves bound for Seleucid but he knew only too well thousands more will get through.

EMPEROR ESTABLISHES TUNA

Emperor Benson has today revealed that himself, Queen Klara of Lodja and President Cruchet of Muneski have signed a treaty between them aimed at promoting "security and prosperity" across the Sea of Alucard. The agreement which establishes the Treaty of Unity for Alucard Nations, otherwise known as TUNA were concluded on the island of Alemba and will see the three nations potentially joined by others in the future. The Treaty allows other nations such as the Isle of Zib or Bakkermaya to join at later dates thus expanding the nature of the treaty. The three leaders agreed that there would be co-operation in terms of anti-piracy, trade, search and rescue as well as reducing pollution.

Emperor Benson II announced the conclusion of the Treaty saying, "The islands of the Alucard are beautiful and some of the most at risk territory on our planet. What industrial nations fail to grasp is that there actions in terms of environmental impacts hit us the hardest. I'm thrilled the Queen of Lodja and President Cruchet see eye to eye with me and I look forward to a long and productive friendship with them. It is my sincere hope that in the coming days I can meet with representatives from Bakkermaya and possibly the isolationist of Zib and persuade them that this agreement is a good idea. The more united the Alucard nations are the better our fortunes."

The Treaty is the first major international one to be signed by the Emperor who this week also hinted that the nation may look at hosting an international event in the near future. "Whether we host a world cup, summer games or maybe even something cultural it is important we begin attracting the world to us. Our mainland and island homes are stunningly beautiful and tourists will love our welcoming hospitality. I see tourism as a vital part of our nations economic future and TUNA can help preserve that but we must do more."

Diplomacy and Events / A Request to nations of Albion
« on: June 22, 2018, 08:11:46 PM »

Once upon a time many nations in the world utilised slaves as an economic means of creating prosperity. It was during these times that our own nation came to expand and grow as we gave shelter to any runaway slave willing to become part of our nation. Furhermore we fought a naval war for close to 200 years raiding Seleucid and other nations vessels hoping to free slaves. In the modern era we have ceased this military action and slavery has vastly reduced. This does not however mean that it has ended and as Tamora trade in human suffering it is our intention to do all that is reasonable to ensure they do so.

With this in mind our nation is asking the nations of Albion to boycott goods and services from Tamora. We shall be implementing this within the next 24 hours. Furthermore we shall be enacting the following;

*Asylum for any Tamoran presenting themselves at any of our nations embassies globally.

*All Tamoran vessels passing through Paracambian territorial waters to be searched for slaves and other contraband.

*A 25% tariff to be introduced on any companies goods which are made using materials from Tamora regardless of where manufactured.

*A reduction of 2.5% in tariffs for any company switching from Tamoran materials to that acquired from any non-slave operating nation.

We therefore ask that all nations of our continent support us in these actions. Together we may end the spectre of slavery once and for all.

Signed

Emperor Benson II of Paracambi

EMPEROR SEEKS TO MAKE ALBION TAMORA FREE ZONE

In an announcement from the Imperial Palace Emperor Benson II has announced that he intends to formally request all nations of Albion to begin a boycott of goods and services originating from Tamora. The Emperor explained that his actions were long coming and he hoped that others would follow suit soon. "Throughout our nations history we have stood for freedom of all people. Our history shows that we have fought against the great slave trading power that was Seleucid and even our national anthem reflects a desire to fight for freedom. We have in that respect lost sight of our path, we have permitted over the last century or so ourselves to rest on our laurels and slap ourselves on the back for our achievements against slavery. Today however there are countless slaves held in Tamora and we must do something about that. As such I am imposing immediately a nationwide boycott of all goods and services from Tamora. We must not let anyone profit from the human misery slavery causes. I therefore will be asking all nations of Albion, and further afield to impose a similar ban. The days of warfare are long consigned to the past, we must use the tools of 21st century warfare to see to it that the people of Tamora see reason and free their slaves."

The Emperor went on the outline several other measures that would be taken and these include.

* Asylum for any Tamoran presenting themselves at any of our nations embassies globally.

PARACAMBIAN CULTURE

The nation of Paracambia was founded by slaves who either escaped their masters and somehow made their way there or those freed from mainly Seleucid slave ships. As such Paracambian culture while largely being influenced by the original settlers has also taken onboard many influences from cultures across Mundus where the slaves came from.

MUSIC

With the nations main religions both placing an emphasis on dance music has become a central part of Paracambian culture. The steel drums are extremely popular as is reggae which is thought to have originated from within the islands of the Empire. The music style emphasis dance and so are therefore rather joyous even if a sad subject. Almost everywhere you go you will find music being played and every community tends to have a choir and steel band. The bands perform regularly at festivals and carnivals and there are many great competitions between the various groups.

"I have no issue with the amendment" Emperor Benson responded. He sent his staff off to write the treaty off in full. In the meantime Benson took the group down onto the beach where a group of school children were taking part in a variety of Paracambian past times. There were at one end a group playing the steel drums while others engaged in a limbo competition. While the students waited their turn to limbo they watched the dancing of the Capoeira fighters nearby as they spun around each other seemingly aiming acrobatic kicks towards the head of the other only for them to matrix their way out of danger and counter with their own. In truth it was a well choreographed routine that the "fighters" had spent weeks preparing. Three girls were playing Dandy Shandy, a game where a corridor was marked out on the sand and two friends stood at each other holding a soft ball, the girl in the middle dodged by ducking, jumping and spinning as the two threw their balls back and forth between each other.

The past times were intermingled with various stalls with snacks and food, fritters of pineapple and banana, Pholourie the spicy dough balls loved by many islanders and of course jerk chicken. Benson was more than happy to mingle with the students and his guests with a large chunk of chicken grasped in his hand.

After about an hour the treaty was ready.

Quote from: Treaty of Unity for Alucard Nations (TUNA)

The Island nations of the Alucard recognise that they face unique and common difficulties. These nations further recognise that by working together they are more likely to overcome these problems. Additionally the nations realise that when one of them prospers so can the others and that through mutual co-operation in certain fields all nations may prosper.

In order to achieve this the nations of TUNA agree to the following.

1. That any nation with natural island territory in the Sea of Alucard may affirm this Treaty and receive the full benefits so long as they accept the responsibilities outlined.

2. All signatories recognise the territorial waters of the others as determined by the Free Seas Concordt.

2.1 Nations agree to not build artificial islands for the purpose of expanding their territorial waters or EEZ's.

2.2 Nations may construct said islands but recognise that they shall not be included in waters as directed by the FSC.

3. Any waters outside the Exclusive Economic Zone of signatory nations shall be divided into Patrol Areas, one for each nation. Within these Patrol Areas the Navy of the allocated nation shall assume control of co-ordinating the following operations.

a) Anti-Piracy Operations
b) Anti-Smuggling Operations
c) Search and Rescue Operations

4. Signatory nations shall share information regarding criminal and terrorist activity so long as the sharing of that information does not endanger the nations national security.

5. Signatory nations shall seek to work together to reduce pollution in the Sea of Alucard.

6. Signatory nations shall seek to work together to reduce climate change as we recognise that our island homes are among the most threatened areas of Mundus in this regard. In order to do this the signatory nations shall seek to co-operate in international organisations to influence global or regional legislation.

7. Signatory nations agree to ensure port fees for other signatory nations are lower than non signatory nations.

8. Signatory nations agree to reduce tariffs between each other to levels lower than non signatory nations excluding those covered by specific treaties.

9. Signatory nations meet once a year as a minimum to discuss issues of concern to each nation.

10. The nations of this treaty agree to live peacefully with each other and use international organisations to arbitrate any disputes between them.

11. Nations agree to establish an embassy in each of the others. Should the Head of State of a signatory nation request it the Ambassador must present themselves within 24 hours.

12. A nation may withdraw from this treaty after 60 days written notice.

The Emperor and his guests made their way towards a table which had been set up just outside the range of the waves rushing up the beach. The Emperor picked up a conch shell blowing it and bringing the people there to attention as they watched the signing ceremony where Benson neatly affixed his signature before passing it on.

Emperor Benson was pleased that Muneski was keen to co-operate, the issue was just how to go about all this and he had a few ideas.

"What I had hoped to achieve he was some kind of official strategy or statement to the world that would formalise the way we do things here. I call it the Treaty of Unity for Alucard Nations (TUNA)and it is short of an alliance...consider it a kind of contract of co-operation."

"obviously I'd be interested if any of you want to add, remove , amend etc this treaty. But I do think having some formal ties between us is a good start." Benson sat back in his chair waiting their responses.

Emperor Benson wasn't massively familiar on computer and IT terminology, he had no need to be as he had a team of civil servants who did all the number crunching he ever needed, the most he used computers for was catching up on the inter-island cricket and reading his e-mails. "Look I'll be honest I don't know what the benefits of this would be, as opposed to its weaknesses. I believe that a simpler approach would be each of us appointing a liason who simply ensures the selected information that is relevant gets passed between us." He looked back at the Muneski delegate and hoped for an explanation

Emperor Benson was pleased that at least they seemed to be able to reach some kind of agreement, even if Muneski and Lodja had different ideas regarding Naval operations it appeared there was a willingness to work together and that meant he should be able to find a compromise. After giving everyone time to enjoy their drinks they made their way outside, there was of course the obligatory photo opportunities and a local school's steel drum band played for a large crowd. Many had come to meet their Emperor while others where keen to be part of the island's first international diplomatic involvement. The Emperor spent a few moments shaking hands with his people while a young school girl was allowed through be security to present the Lodjain Queen with a boquet of tropical flowers, meanwhile a young school boy gave President Cruchet a set of drum sticks and beckoned him to try the steel drums. The regional publicity work done for the day the Emperor placed each of the guests in their own private vehicle, a heavy bulky 4x4. "We were not sure what your security would say about open top vehicles so my apologise, the air conditioning is fantastic." the Emperor added before retreating to his own open top vehicle, a convertible version of his guests. The three vehicles were joined by more security as they made their way along the road towards the venue for the talks, a luxury hotel on the edge of the city. The drive took them down the coastal path, a pot holed road showing the island was still in need of some infrastructure improvements. The crystal blue sea lapped at the white beach just a few meters away from the road in places. The security guards in each vehicle explaining to the guests that occasionally this road got flooded during tropical storms.

As they passed through a patch of leafy tropical forest the sound of a few monkeys chattering away could be heard but as they left the shade a large three story complex of white stone and glass, a contrast to the bright greens and blues of nature appeared. After each had arrived a very nervous hotel manager welcomed them and asked each to sign the guest book. "We are always delighted to host such honoured guests as yourselves" he gushed as he took the leather bound book and pen back. The three where shown to one of the luxury conference rooms overlooking a sandy white cove where a few people enjoyed the sunshine. Benson sat at the head of the table, the President to his left and Queen Klara to his right. "So in regards to naval operations our biggest concern is smuggling, our many islands are hot spots for tourists and as such many bad people believe rsupplying drugs is a worthy past time, the Navy intercept some but you always get some passing through, I suspect similar issues will be the case in your nations. Perhaps we should consider some intelligence and crime data sharing system?"

OOC- I'm happy for anyone to join this once they PM me their idea. This is a central part of Paracambian history so it kind of has a definite end point. I also have no issue if rather than RPing your nation you want to create a character and come along for the ride.

1743 Basseton, Island of Alemba

The Insolent, a Frigate of 32 guns belonging to Imperial Paracambian Navy, had docked late at night and now as the sun rose over the beautiful tropical island crowds gathered down at the docks to catch a glimpse of the boat. It's newly painted hull and glistening trimmings sparkled in the early morning sunlight. Captain Jebadiah Braithwaite made his down the gangplank, his bright green jacket piped with red and yellow braid cascading from his left shoulder. "Good morning fine people" he said as he made a bowing gesture with his Bicorne hat.

"Welcome to Alemba Sir" a young Marine Officer, tasked with guard of the dockyard saluted.

"Thank you" Braithwaite straightened the man's crossbelt. "A smart man is a ready man" he moved past the now blushing Marine and headed for the end of the pier, his men from the ship prepared to leave the boat but a strong loud voice halted them.

"Stand your ground" Sergeant Greaves of the Marines yelled, instinctively the men froze. "We have 24 hours here, under no circumstances are you to drink, whore or otherwise act in a manner unbecoming an Imperial servant. Any of you come back hungover or riddled with the pox and I'll flog the skin off your back and wear it as a scarf, do we understand?" There was silence, "DO WE UNDERSTAND?" he asked again. This time a chorus of "Yes Sergeant" filled the air. "Right get off my ship then." A loud cheer followed by the sound of feet rushing down the wooden boards filled the air, in their eagerness to get ashore some of the skeleton crew of The Insolent fell into the sea a bellow of laughter coming from the rest. Some where meet at the dockside by family, others immediately began flirting with the local girls who had come down to see the vessel.

Braithwaite headed for the market square, he'd been to Alemba countless times, often on routine patrol against pirates, sometimes to repair after clashes with the Seleucid slave ships, more than regularly they won those and brought their freed slaves to islands such as this to give them their freedom. Hundreds of years this had gone on with the Paracambians refusing to accept the yoke of Seleucid slavery for anyone. It had helped boost their population and the slaves had even helped expand the Empire onto new islands. The Insolent however had fallen on hard times, he had been wounded in one such clash and while lying in his bunk with a fever he'd been lucky to survive his now deceased 2nd in Command had tried to take on three slave ships, resulting in much of the crew being killed, the officer a Commander Lincoln had himself been wounded, apparently hiding behind a barrel as the ship had been boarded. It was only Sergeant Greaves taking command of the defence that had saved the day. Two days later Braithwaites fever broke and having received Greaves report he made his way into the ships sick bay, there he had withdrawn his pistol and shot the Commander in the head. It wasn't that the man had failed, it wasn't even the fact he'd got lots of the crew killed, it was the fact he'd not faced the danger with his men, in Braithwaites opinion an officer who shirked danger wasn't an officer and therefore served no useful purpose.

It was with this disaster in mind that Braithwaite had planned on touring the islands and replenishing his crew. Alemba had been the first stop, it had a large fishing fleet and as such generally provided a useful supply of manpower. At the market square there was the regular hustle and bustle, fresh fruit being sold, vibrant colourful vegetables, red and green cloth being sewn into clothing of all kinds. He found a sturdy looking crate and climbed onto it, already a crowd was gathering but to get everyone's attention he cocked one of his twin pistols and fired it into the air, the smoke drifting away slowly in the still air. "Ladies and Gentleman, I am Captain Braithwaite for The Insolent, so called because we spearhead the fight against the evil Seleucid slave traders" a boo went through the crowd, primarily lead by a few Marines dressed in civilian clothing but the crowd soon joined in. "We are called The Insolent because we refuse to accept the tyranny of the Seleucid yoke, in fact we break those yokes every chance we get." This time a cheer, more organic than the boo. "But we have fallen upon hard times, our numbers are dwindling, recently 100 brave souls laid down their lives and joined Teku to watch over us and collect the stars with him. They died so we may be free, they died so no free man, woman or child will know the lash of the Seleucid whip. Today I stand before you asking.....no begging you to remember their sacrifice, to take into your heart their determination that Paracambi shall not rest until every slave on Mundus has been freed." Claps and cheers washed over him. "Now, I need men, I need brave souls willing to join our Navy and take the fight to the Seleucid. For doing that you shall receive a uniform.....and boys what lady doesn't love a man in uniform" He winked at a large lady with a flowery headscarf near the stage, "I'm right am I not darling?" he asked making the middle aged woman blush and the crowd laugh. "You'll receive a silver dollar for joining up" he twirled one in the air. "and then 2 Marks a month, one paid to you, the other paid to your next of kin. You also get a share of any plunder we take. So who wants some of the action?" he yelled.

Immediately three men moved through the crowd and said they wished to sign up, all of them his Marines in disguise. Egged on by the spirit of these men a further three came forward immediately and Braithwaite went through the process of signing them up. Others, mainly younger men in the crowd talked it over, some with loved ones. Some parents encouraged their children, often 2nd sons in large families to do so, it was a chance of a regular wage and income but also one less mouth to feed. "Don't you dare Thomas" one mother said to her young 16 year old son. She could see the twinkle in his eye, he'd always been easily swayed and was a romantic at heart, his harp his pride and joy he would sing songs of love, or the sea and of beauty in the local tavern, he actually earnt a decent income too.

"Mother, I have to, we're only free because of these men." He pulled away and walked forward, his small harp strung around him. "Sir, may I sign up?" Braithwaite looked the boy up and down, he was small for his age but the Captain could use small people, they got to the places others found hard.

"How old are you boy?"

"16 summers sir." Braithwaite seemed surprised, he'd guessed the boy was no more than 14.

"Write and sign your name and take the coin. If you can't write I shall do it for you" he offered a piece of paper and a pen.

"I can write sir" Thomas said proudly, one of the few people who could. He'd been taught by a failed missionary who had hoped to convert the island to Christianity two years ago. The Priest had hoped Thomas would convert and turn his musical skills to praising the Lord, however Thomas instead had read old stories and written his own songs of his nations past. Braithwaite looked impressed and the signature done he handed the boy the dollar. It was official Thomas had joined the Navy. His mother had watched heartbroken that one of her baby boys was heading off to war, maybe never to return. She walked home knowing the Captain liked to take his new recruits to the tavern to celebrate, and hopefully get a few more locals drunk and signed up. It gave her time to prepare for losing her son. She packed him a small pack, filled it with salted fish, meat, some spare clothing, his song book. She took his deceased fathers sword, a short marines one down from above the fireplace and headed back to the tavern.

"Son" She said as she approached, he was sat next to Braithwaite who for some reason had taken a liking to the boy. Thomas had been urged into singing and the pub was joining in. He stopped mid flow thinking his mother was to confront him. "I don't want you to go. But if you must then take this." she placed the sword on the table and Thomas didn't know what to say. His father had died when he was four and he had few memories of him. Braithwaite however recognised the sword and slid it towards him.

"Thomas, the son of a Marine of The Resolve....a good ship, a good crew, sadly missed" The ship had been decommisoned 12 years ago after being battered in an exchange with the Seleucid. Thomas father had been wounded in the defence as they limped the boat home and died just before they reached land. "Put it on, put it on" Braithwaite fussed around him strapping the sword belt on. "There we have it, Thomas The Minstral Boy, ready for the ranks of death hey" The Pub cheered as Braithwaite gave Thomas mum a hug. "I'll do all I can to bring him back to you. He's doing a brave thing, you should rejoice he whispered in her ear.

"I pray for the day he can play his harp in peace." was all she said before saying her emotional goodbye to her son keen for adventure.

Diplomacy and Events / Re: Sea of Alucard Island Gathering
« on: May 03, 2018, 02:50:42 PM »
It hadn't quiet been the massive gathering of island nations Emperor Benson had hoped for, but two was a damn sight better than zero and so it was time to press ahead. He first greeted this new young monarch from Lodja, "Good morning Queen Klara" Benson gave a swift bow of the head as Empress Madeline put a garland of pink and yellow flowers around the Queen and her entourage's neck. "We'll shortly head off to our venue, we've been informed that President Cruchet of Muneski will be joining us shortly, perhaps you'd care to join my wife in the airport lounge." Madeline escorted the entourage over to the small single story building that severed as the airport terminal, the lounge was in fact a staffroom that had been tarted up for the occasion and a tray of chilled fruit juices.

"So my dear how are you finding life as a monarch?" Madeline asked as she got the group settled.

Outside the aircraft of the Muneski president was arriving and once more Benson waited patiently for the man to arrive, this time rather than his wife it was a female member of the military who gave them the garland of flowers. Receiving her salute Benson walked with the President towards the ramshackle airport. "So have you meet the Queen of Lodja before? She arrived shortly before you, she seems a rather interesting sort" Benson observed as they entered the building, he held open the door for the President before taking a seat next to his wife who instantly stood and sorted the President out with drinks. The Emperor waited for everyone to be seated before he began, "I'd like to thank you both for coming, I'm excited about what we can achieve here, I know I outlined my hopes in my letter to you, but I want this get together to be as much about what aims you have as I do..... so feel free to speak up" the Emperor produced a notebook and pen.

Diplomacy and Events / Sea of Alucard Island Gathering

To:-

Her Divine Majesty Queen Klara II of Lodja
Wei Xuhen of Heimai
King Lansakara XXVI of Kingdom of Palanka Nadu
Mr.Bob Cruchet of  The Federation of Muneski

I would like to take this opportunity to invite all of you to join me on the island of Alemba for a meeting to discuss our mutual interests. Our nations are responsible for the islands that occupy the Sea of Alucard, we therefore all experience a series of similar issues and problems. Just a handful of examples include, piracy, smuggling, fisheries and environmental concerns. As the largest concentration of islands on Mundus I believe that by forming a supportive relationship between us would enable these islands to flourish.

I hope that you will accept my invitation and look forward to welcoming you to the city of Basseton.

Kind Regards

Emperor Benson II

Basseton was the only logical choice for this meeting, it was either here or on the mainland portion of Paricambi, but that wouldn't make sense regarding such a meeting taking place away from an island. Over the last twenty years the people of Alemba had built their island into a tourist attraction and as such it was the only island with a large international airport. Benson had arrived the day before, toured a few of the local tourist sites, meet with the Mayor of the island to discuss a few issues and enjoyed a rather nice meal on the Presidential Hotel's private roof top terrace. He'd enjoyed being able to spend time with the Empress Madeline without it being too formal.

This morning though it was all about business and the airport had a host of security forces walking the perimeter of the field. Paracambi had no history of terrorism but the gathering of so many people in one place of great note could be a tempting target. He'd arranged for a series of red SUV's to transport the guests to a terrace of the hotel overlooking the beach, the cool breeze coming off the Alucard likely to provide a relief for some of those attending not use to the intense heat of the island.

RELIGION IN PARACAMBI
VODOU

Beliefs
Often misrepresented as Voodoo and its fictional form of evil black magic and blood sacrifices, the truth is a lot less dramatic. Around 60% of all Paracambians follow the Vodou faith.

Vodouisants believe in a Supreme God called Bondye. Since Bondye  is considered unreachable, Vodouisants aim their prayers to lesser entities, the spirits known as loa each of whom is associated with certain duties or areas of daily life.. The most notable loa include Papa Legba , Erzulie Freda , Simbi , Kouzin Zaka , and The Marasa, divine twins considered to be the first children of Bondye. These loa can be divided into 21 nations, which include the Petro, Rada, Congo, and Nago, each nation is associated with a specific sphere of life , for instance the Ogou family are soldiers, the Ezili govern the feminine spheres of life, the Azaka govern agriculture, the Ghede govern the sphere of death and fertility.

Coolness overall is valued, and so is the ability and inclination to protect oneself and one's own if necessary. Love and support within the family of the Vodou society seem to be the most important considerations. Generosity in giving to the community and to the poor is also an important value. One's blessings come through the community, and one should be willing to give back. As such a person being solitary is looked down upon and the community come together to ensure no one is alone, this sees many families inviting single neighbours for dinners, visiting old widowed people and other such practices of community support. This sense of community also means there is no single religious leader such as a Pope in Catholicms, instead communities select their own spiritual leader who may or may not be given a specific title. Being part of a group is seen as important and so many religious groups have sprung up including secret societies.

According to Vodou, the soul consists of two aspects, in a type of soul dualism: the gros bon ange (big good angel) and the ti bon ange (little good angel). The gros bon ange is the part of the soul that is essentially responsible for the basic biological functions, such as the flow of blood through the body and breathing. On the other hand, the ti bon ange is the source of personality, character and willpower. "As the gros bon ange provides each person with the power to act, it is the ti bon ange that molds the individual sentiment within each act .While the latter is an essential element for the survival of one's individual identity, it is not necessary to keep the body functioning properly in biological terms, and therefore a person can continue to exist without their physical body.

RASTAFARI

Beliefs

Emphasis is placed on the idea that personal experience and intuitive understanding should be used to determine the truth or validity of a particular belief or practice. No Rasta, therefore, has the authority to declare what beliefs and practices are orthodox and which are heterodox
Rastafari belief is deeply influenced by Judeo-Christian religion. It accords the Bible a central place in its belief system, regarding it as a holy book, and adopts a literalist interpretation of its contents. Rastas regard the Bible as an authentic account of early black history and their place as God's favoured people. They believe that the Bible was originally written on stone in the language of Amharic. For Rastas, the Bible is therefore viewed as the key to understanding the past and the present and for predicting the future. It is also regarded as a source book from which they can form their religious practices. The Bible's final chapter, the Book of Revelation, is widely regarded as the most important part for Rastas, having a particular significance for their situation.

However, Rastas also believe that the true meaning of the Bible has been warped, both through mistranslation into other languages and by deliberate manipulation by those who wanted to deny them their history.[They also regard it as cryptographic, meaning that it has many hidden meanings. They believe that its true teachings can be revealed through intuition and meditation with the "book within". As a result of what they regard as the corruption of the Bible, Rastas also turn to other sources that they believe shed light on black history.

Rastafari are monotheists, worshiping a singular God whom they call Jah. Rastas view Jah in the form of the Holy Trinity – Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. As well as regarding Jah as a deity, Rastas also believe that Jah is inherent within each human individual. This belief is reflected in the aphorism, often cited by Rastas, that "God is man and man is God". ] As a result, Rastas speak of "knowing" Jah, rather than simply "believing" in him. In seeking to narrow the distance between humanity and divinity, Rastafari embraces mysticism.

Jesus of Nazareth is an important figure in Rastafari. However, practitioners reject the traditional depiction of Jesus present in Christianity, particularly the depiction of him as a white, believing that this is a perversion of the truth. They believe that Jesus was black and that he was a Rasta. Christianity is treated with suspicion out of the view that the oppressors and the oppressed cannot share the same God, with many Rastas taking the view that the God worshipped by most white Christians is actually the Devil. Rastas therefore often view Christian preachers as deceivers, and regard Christianity as being guilty of furthering the oppression of the black diaspora, often referring to it as having perpetrated "mental enslavement". One recurring saying among Rastafari is that "The Pope is Satan". Jesus is given particular prominence among a Rastafari denomination known as the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Rastas belonging to this group refer to Jesus as Yahshua and Yesus Kritos, and believe that his second coming is forthcoming.

TEKUISM

The Native religion of Paracambi is Tekuism. The first recorded mention of the faith is from 800 BC, it was then adopted by the first settlers of Paracambi as they arrived. It believes that there is one God, known as Teku and that he has embodied many people with aspects of his power throughout existence.

Teku was the god of creation and the hunt , he one responsible for restoring the world each day. He carries a bow made of two great snakes, which appear in the sky as the rainbow for the people below, and each day carries out the task of renewing the heavens. As the sun sets he begins to capture the stars and gather their light together, assembling them so that they may be sent to the sun to restore it once again and give it the strength it needs to rise the next day.

Teku was also responsible for the creation of the humans as well and the animals which they hunt. It is the belief of the faithful that he gathered together clay, much like he does with the stars each night, and used it to craft the various peoples of the world. To create black people he used black clay and to create white people he used white clay.  In these clay figures a soul, called the megbe, was introduced to the clay figures and gave them life while bonding them to the rest of the world.

However, several aspects of Teku are sometimes attributed to others who have lived among us at times. These people are known as the "Beloved" and are believed to have been when Teku sends part of his own soul to Mundus in order to live among us, either for a divine purpose, to guide humanity or simply for his own amusement

The flight from Aluhampton to Herrenbucht was uneventful and the Emperor had taken the chance to catch up on some reading, he was currently half way through a book on the history of Albion but hadn't touched it for several long months.

Opposite him was his wife, Empress Madeline, she was dozing her seat reclined as the aircraft cut its way through the skies. This would be the first foreign coronation either of them had attended and both were a little unsure what would face them upon arrival. As the aircraft touched down the pair were escorted out of the plane by Soloman Brown, the Emperor's Security Agent, a former military man of twenty years and rather softly spoken. Brown held the car door open allowing first the Empress and then Empreror to clamber in before sitting himself in the front. The pair of Imperials marvelled at the new nation as they wound their way to the Cathedral.

As they arrived they presented themselves before their host, "Thank you for allowing us to share your special day. As a token of our esteem please let me present you with this Lily they grow wild on many of our islands and are thought to be omens by some. They signify peace, harmony and according to scientists actually help remove contamination from the air, a sign of health and purity." Empress Madeline smiled as she handed it over, "It's tradition back home that on her wedding day a lady wears a lily in her hair." she added thinking back to her own wedding twenty years ago.

The National Anthem of the Empire is known as the Minstrel Boy. It tells a story of a Paracambian soldier who in the 18th Century fought to free slaves from Royal Seleucid transport ships feeling it his moral duty.  Being a travelling musician before joining the Marines he had packed with him his musical instrument when he set sail on the raids. His ship was captured and knowing their fate would likely be taken as slaves themselves the crew scuttled the ships and charged the Seleucids, all dying in the attempt. The wreckage of the boat was found a week later and the inscribed harp recovered.

LYRICS

The minstrel boy to the war is gone,
 In the ranks of death you'll find him;
His father's sword he has girded on,
 And his wild harp slung behind him;
"Land of Song!" said the warrior bard,
"Though all the world betrays thee,
One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard,
One faithful harp shall praise thee!"

The Minstrel fell! But the foeman's chain
 Could not bring that proud soul under;
The harp he loved ne'er spoke again,
 For he tore its chords asunder;
And said "No chains shall sully thee,
Thou soul of love and bravery!
Thy songs were made for the pure and free
They shall never sound in slavery!"

The Minstrel Boy will return we pray
When we hear the news we all will cheer it,
The minstrel boy will return one day,
Torn perhaps in body, not in spirit.
Then may he play on his harp in peace,
In a world such as heaven intended,
For all the bitterness of man must cease,
And ev'ry battle must be ended.

THE MONARCHY

EMPEROR BENSON II

Emperor Benson II was born 6th September 1972 on the island of Alemba while his mother, Empress Ramona was visiting her grand-parents. As such despite that island having its own Prince today the Emperor still feels a kinship with it. His father, Emperor Samuel IV didn't see him until he was two days old.

Almost immediately he moved to the mainland and was brought up on the Imperial Families Aluhampton estate. There he was privately tutored alongside his older sister, Princess Eleanor and then later his younger brother Prince Christian. The young Prince Benson was a keen sportsman and represented the island of his birth in Cricket and wrestling. At the age of 18 he enrolled at Aluhampton University where he studied Law and Economics graduating in 1993.

After University he spent four years in the Navy, a tradition for the royal family that every member do some for of military or civic service. He spent most of his short naval career working on patrol ships with a short three month tour in a submarine. Upon leaving the Navy in 1997 he began taking on royal duties alongside his father.

In 2012 his father died after a long battle with illness during which Benson had assumed all the duties of his father. Benson choose to be crowned not in Aluhampton Palace but rather on the island of Alemba something which at the time caused a bit of controversy.

Since becoming Emperor Bensen has focused much of his efforts on promoting shift in the nations economy from an agricultural one to a mainly tourist and service based industry one. This however has not always been popular as many see it as exploiting the islands for the benefit of the mainland.

In 1998 he married a member of the Alemba royal family, Princess Madeline, who he meet at a charitable event held by her family. The two had a mutual love of cricket and were spotted at many matches throughout the Empire. The couple have two children, Prince Marcus (b.1999) and Princess Sophia (b.2002).

EMPERESS MADELINE

Madeline is both the Empress and also a Princess of Alemba. She was born 27 August 1972 and grew up in a regular school on the island. She was considered a talented maths student but otherwise an average student. In 1988 she won the National Maths Challenge and won a place at the National Institute of Science and Technology where she studied Applied Mathematics. While at University she became interested in computing and set up a small company with a classmate.

After graduation in 1993 she spent her time building up Zenith Data Systems, a company making data processing systems for businesses. She sold her share in the company when marrying the Emperor earning her an estimated $160million. She meet Emperor Benson at a charity cricket match in 1996 and the pair married two years later. The couple have two children, Prince Marcus (b.1999) and Princess Sophia (b.2002). Since becoming Empress she has established the Soloman Family Fund which helps fund young entrepreneurs aged under 20.

GOVERNMENT STRUCTURE

PRINCIPALITIES

The Commonwealth is split into six Principalities, each of which has their own ruling Prince or Princess. Every five years a Principality must hold elections to elect two Representatives to the national government. A Principality is governed by its own constitution and may establish laws based on the following areas,  law enforcement, public education, public health, regulating intrastate commerce, and local transportation and infrastructure. The Principality is granted a budget from central government each year to run these areas but may also impose their own taxation to raise further revenue.

CENTRAL GOVERNMENT

The Central Government is based on the mainland at Alumampton. It is made up of 12 representatives and one appointed by the monarch who acts as Prime Minister. The Prime Minister may only vote if there is a tied vote, however they may take part in debates and introduce legislation. Any of the 12 elected representatives may also introduce legislation. They may suggest legislation on any issue not governed by the Principalities.

THE MONARCH

The Monarch acts as the overseer of the government and holds the position of Commander in Chief and has sole responsibility for foreign diplomacy. This is however often delegated to other officials on a case by case basis. No law can be passed until the monarch signs it into law. They have six months to do so before it automatically passes. Should they not agree with the law they can veto it which means amendments must be made before it can be presented again. A monarch may only use four veto's a year.

BACKGROUND

The Paracambian Civilisation began on the islands in the North of the Sea of Alucard in the 2nd Century BC after a group of explorers set up a trading post on one of them in order to restock their ships with fresh food and water. Soon the island was discovered to contain many items of value itself and a colony was established there. During the 2nd Century AD the Paracambians landed in Northern Albion and established an outpost there that became their native home. Over the next 500 years or so their people thrived by a combination of maritime trading and making good use of the rich farmland. The first problems however came in around the 11th Century when the islands and the mainland began clashing over the rightful monarch. This saw nearly 150 years of war as control swung backwards and forwards between various factions. In the 12th Century it was decieded that the Soloman family would maintain dominion over the mainland and the various islands would be split among lesser royals, a practice that brings about todays situation where the Emperor controls the whole Imperial Commonwealth with Prince's and Princesses controlling various islands held in fealty to the Emperor.
