BACKGROUND

The Aegeran Kingdom has been a long lasting and continuous polity in the area. Being one of the cradles of civilization, particularly in the continent. The modern Aegeran Kingdom arose after the War of Independence in 1721 after which Aegera gained full independence after a brief occupation of seven years.

Aegera appears an anachronism, particularly because of the attached importance to lineages despite the society mostly becoming an urban and advanced. Anthropologists theorize that this is a result of the extremely diverse country. The Kingdom of Aegera is officially a constitutional elective monarchy, although most scholars would not strictly categorize as such. The Aegeran constitution and government have influences stemming from Ancient Aegeran philosophy, Hellenistic philosophy, Christian philosophy and the Renaissance. As such most political scientists would properly categorize the government as a: Constitutional Elective Monarchy in the tradition of the Renaissance. Rather than replace it, the Enlightenment supplemented Aegeran political philosophy.

Government

The Hellenistic tradition (Greek-speaking) is the foundation and basis of the government of Aegera the other ethnic groups have developed their own political philosophy and have influenced the government as well. The minority ethnic groups have developed a distinct political philosophy deriving from the ancient civilizations that their ethnic group descended from e.g. Code of Hammurabi, Sharia Law, etc. Despite this, most of their influence has been restricted to their respective communities.

Monarchy

The Aegeran monarch, officially the King of Aegera, is the head of state of the country. The King is elected by the Convention of Experts from a body of qualified candidates. The qualifications for a candidate are regulated by the constitution, but generally the most important qualification is for the candidates to be educated in statesmanship. The monarchy is defined by law as an "elective" office, what this entails is that the constitution prohibits the designation of a royal house, heir apparent, crown princes/princesses, etc. as treasonous. It prohibits the immediate family of the King to be his successors

Convention of Experts

Συνέλευση εμπειρογνωμόνων, (Synélefsi empeirognomónon) known as the Convention of Experts is one of the most important institutions in Aegera. It is a deliberative body that is delegated by the constitution the power to elect the King, as well as dismiss him/her. There is no restrictions for the selection of the King in regards to gender (or Queen for that matter), the Assembly of Experts can elect a female as Queen but to date no female has ever been elected, although various females have been nominated.

After the passage of a law reforming the institution was passed in 1920, it removed the right of the sitting King to reject or approve candidates to the body. As of currently, strict provisions of the constitution to be elected to the Convention are still in effect and it remains one of the most educated bodies in government, the other being the Guardian Council and the King.

The Assembly of Experts has its origins in the previous parliament prior to the 1700's. The parliament prior to 1700's was restricted to barons and nobles, effectively the wealthy. The parliament was the supreme legislative body prior to the current constitution. After Independence and the resulting revolution, the body was reformed and it became the elective body of the Leader. While a new democratic institution became Parliament.

Culture of Aegera

The culture of Aegera has existed for millennia and has experienced an evolution It consists of Hellenistic culture, Hellenistic history, as well as the history and traditions of the Arab population and ethnic minorities that live in Aegera, such as the Persians, Copts, Kurds and more. Despite religious, linguistic, and to a lesser extent ethnic differences, a common culture has existed in Aegera. Most Aegerans are multilingual speaking their own native language and the national 'Standard Aegeran.' The cuisine of Aegera is a Mediterranean/Levantine cuisine with a strong focus in herbs and other spices that reflect the culture of great trading.

The national identity of Aegera consists of a largely predominantly Hellenistic culture however, the various minorities that have existed in Aegera have contributed culturally, linguistically, religiously, and to the cuisine of the nation. The mainstream, dominant national culture in Aegera is: Hellenistic, Aegeran-speaking, and Catholic.

Despite the current majority of Hellenes, Aegera has always been a multi-ethnic, and multi linguistic, and multi religious state. Historically, no ethnic group has ever achieved a majority in the region, and although pluralities did exist these were not secured and were constantly fluctuating. This has given Aegera the nickname "Abode of Civilizations", as many civilizations arose in the Aegeran Plateau that not only contributed to the Aegeran nation but the surrounding countries as well. Historians and archaeologists have stated that Aegera has been home to roughly ten ancient dominant civilizations (known as 'tribes' in the ancient world) in Aegera as well as a couple minor ones. Of the ten ancient civilizations only five have survived into the modern age as ethnic groups these are: Hellenes, Arabs, Persians, Copts, and Kurds.

Before the fifteenth century the idea of 'Aegera' as a nation did not exist and the idea of a singular geographic and sedentary nation was considered a foreign concept. By that time, most ethnic groups had begun to decline in influence and become minorities except for the Hellenes who were experiencing the opposite. Many minorities rejected the notion of a geographic nation because it disregarded the religious, linguistic, and cultural differences of Aegerans. They even outright rejected the name 'Aegera' for the new nation as it was only the most recent, Hellenic word for the region. It should not be assumed that during this period the ethnic groups that were to become the minorities in the modern era immediately lost their power and wealth. Even as they were becoming minorities in the 1400's-1600's, there still remained influential members of these ethnic groups in many segments of society e.g. government, business, law, courts, agriculture, education, and philosophy well into the twentieth century.

Beginning in the fifteenth century the Hellenes, began to rise as the dominant ethnic group in Aegera and by the seventeenth century they were the majority. It is the Hellenes that unified the country and 'Hellenized' many aspects of Aegera (mostly government institutions). Religious tensions began when Muslims rejected the advent of the rule of law, secularization, capitalism, and justice brought forth by the Hellenes. Their main argument was that these values deviated from religion e.g. Sharia Law, Zakat, and Sharia Courts. The Hellenes were viewed as being too influenced by western values, while the religious Arabs were viewed as backwards.

Religion in Aegera

The Kingdom of Aegera is an extremely religiously diverse country. The ethnic diversity has somewhat facilitated the tolerance of different faiths in Aegera. But the primary reason for the tolerance may be due to the Aegeran ethos, which has upheld religious freedom (among others) throughout the centuries. The oldest attested faith in Aegera is the Aegeran Pantheon, which at one point dominated the entire country. The largest faith in Aegera is Christianity followed by a form of metaphysical, esoteric, and philosophical religion.

Christianity

The Holy Wisdom Cathedral, a striking reminder of Christianity in Aegera

Despite, many religions in Aegera, the most influential has been Christianity. Among the Christian Churches are: The Aegeran Byzantine Catholic Church, Coptic Catholic Church, Church of Aegera (Eastern Orthodox), Maronite Church of Antioch, Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, and to lesser extent the Armenian Apostolic Church and the Latin Catholic Church.

The largest is the Aegeran Byzantine Catholic Church, at roughly twenty-four percent of the population, a sui iuris eastern Catholic church in full communion with the Holy See. The Aegeran Byzantine Catholic Church and the eastern orthodox Church of Aegera are almost indistinguishable, they use the same rite however, the former recognizes the supremacy of the Holy See. They were the same church until the Great Schism.

Christianity in Aegera began after the death of Jesus Christ in 33 A.D., in his Great Commission. According to tradition John the Apostle preached in northern outskirts of Aegera, while Apostle Paul preached in the southern areas. These communities would eventually converge. For most of history, this community was the majority in Aegera quickly replacing Aegeran paganism
