Title: The Plot To Destroy Rokkenjiman Democracy

Pyrena Castle, Pyrettania, as viewed from the helicopter of Beatrice Anselmo.

It was a sight she wasn't expecting to ever see again and yet, here it was, right before her. Pyrena Castle in all of its glory, even if the absence of leaves would paint a depressing picture for some to her, it spoke of home. Each revolution of the helicopter blades above her head brought her several feet closer to touching down and, by the Seven Divine, when her foot touched that familiar stone her foot has always touched when her pilots landed, she instantly felt that much more like herself again. While there had not been much pomp and circumstance at the airport, indeed, her time there had been purposely limited as she transitioned from the Imperial Transport to the awaiting helicopter, here at home she was greeted with lines of familiar faces on each side of the walkway to the Castle itself from the heliport. She couldn't help but tear up as she grasped their hands as she passed them and, to be fair, their eyes were also quite watery. Before entering the Castle she turned her back to the door, bowed to them, and said "It's good to see you all again, I've missed you all so very much, thank you, thank you for these tears," she concluded with a smile before opening the door, feeling and smelling the still familiar aura of Pyrena Castle.

Almost as habit she made her way for her office, it had been her routine for so many years it acted almost upon muscle memory. She placed her coat on the rack, took precisely seventeen steps to her personal stairway, another 14 steps to the second story, and a further seven to the office itself. She smiled, noticing Asuna had taken great care in preserving it in her absence; it was almost as if nothing had been untouched yet the absence of dust indicated that was not the case. Her eyes were drawn, however, to her chair facing the window which sat directly behind her desk, gently rocking even. "Now then," she said with her characteristically playful voice, "who sits behind door number one as I enter what should be an empty room?" After a second or two the chair would turn around, revealing Tamaki Kado who smiled at the Empress before joining his hands together in front of him upon the surface of the desk. "Hello, Beatrice, it's been too long, yes?"

"Ah yes, Kado," she said as she walked to her chair despite his presence in it, "I do believe you're sitting in my seat." Without a word he rose and walked to the seat on the right side of her desk, sitting only after Beatrice herself had. Beatrice had heard much of him from Lucinda. While was a most loyal asset to the First Empire the fact that he was willing to cross lines even Lucinda had questioned made him someone Lucinda had gone lengths to insulate Beatrice from. Still, she knew she could trust that he was an ally, someone whose interests were in the service of his Empire, not in personal gain. "Your Majesty, I thought it would be fitting for me to welcome you home," he continued, "in precisely one minute and thirty seconds we will be joined by Kayleigh Pryde, Hazel Narin and Rion Ayanami. While you are in no position to act or to make any decisions I insisted upon them that the information I am to convey is of relevance to you and, for your own personal safety and that of the Anselmo Family and the First Empire itself, I would not share it with them without your presence."

"Still timing things to the second, I see," she said with a smirk, "very well. If I may ask, why is the Empress not in attendance?" Kado let out an uncharacteristic sigh; in another timeline, at least in Beatrice's mind, Kado and Lucinda were certainly a couple. Borderline sociopaths with a sense of loyalty and duty that could in some cases pave the paths to their very undoing. "You read the news of the developments in Kalasin, the revelations of the atrocities?" Beatrice would nod in response. "Well, the Empress had raw access beyond what was let out in the media," he paused, "I couldn't saddle her with more triggers for the PTSD she's suffering from that. She even surfaced three of our SSGNs to send a message to them; you know as well as I do those boats operate in secrecy, and she even made a triangle with Kalasin in the middle. Naturally the reports weren't made officially, but it was enough that they knew Rokkenjima wouldn't tolerate anything further."

"Very well then," Beatrice said as she hit the button on her smartwatch. "Your timer is up," she said with a smile as a knock came to the door, "So it has," Kado said in response before adding, "Please, do show yourselves in." He had arranged for an additional three chairs, two to the right and one to the left, for the purposes of this meeting.

"Allow me to get straight to business," he said after they had been seated, standing himself. "In the closing days of the reign of the Shizukesa Empress I was approached to start an investigation as to the activities of Grand Marshall Rowe, an investigation which certainly remains in the preliminary stages. Yet, as I looked upon past patterns compared to current patterns in his behaviour, I've been noticing irregularities. Usually, on Tuesdays, he has lunch at a cafe in Pyrettania which specializes in Dartfordian cuisine yet lately he's been declining those opportunities; instead traveling from Imperial High Command to an address in Ashinxaio. Rowe is a man of habbit, almost the very definiton of a creature of habbit; at this stage I merely find it odd that he has made such an abrubt change but know, full well, I will find out why those patterns have changed as they have. In addition and, perhaps more concerning, a supposedly dead man is making purchases and using his cell phone again which, as I'm sure we can all appreciate, are some fairly large red flags even a novice would pick up upon. Empress Beatrice, you have to be careful, these grounds must remain free of an IRAF presence until I conclude my investigation. I would ask that my friends here," he said motioning to the Achkaerinese, "reference the intelligence I am precluded from viewing under Rokkenjiman anti-surveillance laws upon our own people, to see if they notice what I am noticing, and to inform me accordingly."

He paused, sat, and with a chuckle added, "In short, welcome home."

The silence was very obvious before Rion (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg646#msg646) stood up, walked the short distance to where Kado sat and proceeded to slap him hard across the face "So let me get this straight at the exact time that your allies are screaming at you that there's an issue within the Rokkenjiman military, at the exact time that the INIS verifies that there are no problems within the Rokkenjiman military, you start an investigation into the most senior officer in the Rokkenjiman military? It'd be laughable if it weren't such a serious issue."
"And people say she has no emotion." Hazel (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg13231#msg13231) said as Rion ran a hand through her hair
"Ok..." Rion said "Helus how I hate games where I don't know all the pieces. Kayleigh, you tell all your people, you tell them what they need to know, if there's something going on I really don't want to be blindsided."
"Do I tell Emerson?" Kayleigh (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg672#msg672) asked
"Yes you do." Rion said "He'll want to instantly act, tell him not to and if he questions why you tell him I said so."
"So what do I tell him?" Kayleigh asked

"Tell him to let the game come to him." Rion said noticing the look on Kado's face "The obvious consideration is Rowe's access to the Imperial Palace he's on the Imperial Council, he's a trusted individual, normally we'd say risk outweighs reward and contain him, we don't need to here. Rokkenjima's about to have a new Constitution that will take care of that problem and after that he's a lot easier to contain in the access stakes, should give you enough cover to continue investigations. Kayleigh you keep the family safe, Hazel if any member of the IRAF comes into the grounds of Pyrena, I don't care who they are you have my full authority to do whatever you need to do short of breaking the Uppsalla Convention. I'll get things going on my end, we got blindsided a year ago that's not happening again." she looked at Kado "The slap was for lying to me." she delivered a second strike "And that's so you don't do it again."

Not missing a beat Kado continued without showing any inclinations of phase. "While I'm certain this is ground which doesn't truly need to be covered, let us review a few things. I've no concerns as to the Imperial Rokkenjiman Navy; Forrester, whilst an associate of Rowe, is someone who has maintained an untarnished record and has not demonstrated any tendencies which would draw suspicion; indeed, in the IRN we have a group of officers who, in my line of work, prove rather tedious in observing and that lot tend to take pride in the narrative built from the early days of the Empire, that the IRN is both the sword and shield of Chrysanthemum Throne. As for the IRAF as a whole, at times I am called upon to deceive; under these circumstances it is to give people, like Rowe, a false sense of confidence that he is not under suspicion, and for those such as yourself genuine reactions are required at times. I can't, at this stage, be quite certain as to what is going on with Mr. Rowe, only that there's something that isn't right, comparing current patterns to historical patterns. However, I would add that my assessment of the Rokkenjiman Military isn't entirely inaccurate; I do not believe that lower officers or the rank-and-file are involved in some sort of conspiracy and believe that, if there's anything afoot in the IRAF, at this stage it would remain something within the confines of Rowe's mind. He'll keep in mind the oath all Rokkenjiman soldiers make to the Crown, where their duties and sentiments are in that understanding, and move with the knowledge that his actions can't be obvious in serving a motive outside of that oath."

Kado couldn't help but break his otherwise stoic posture with the second slap, chuckling for a second. "You've had one Lucinda Hadley in your custody for some time now," he paused for a moment. "I'll do you a service in saying now that her and I are, in some ways, cut from similar cloths. I can see similar tendencies even in you, and while others may react as predicted to such physical displays as what you've subjected me to twice now, you've merely served to pique my interests. If the topic matter weren't of such gravitas, I'd ponder whether or not I should consider flirtatio..."

"And I shall step in and nip that in the bud right there," Beatrice interjected. "I can only trust all of you to perform your duties to the highest of calibers, we are in many ways apparently dealing with something, something that can't be entirely quantified at this point in time, yet my years of service upon the Throne tell me that something is most certainly afoot. Kado, continue your efforts in your investigation and find the answers we need to bring some sense to this all, taking into consideration any information our Achkaerinese counterparts may relay to you that you, yourself, cannot access domestically. Rion, I know he's not the easiest of people to work with, but his subterfuge isn't guided at you or us, while he could have relayed it in better manners..." she stopped herself and took a moment to reflect, "please, do forgive me for that, what with sitting in this chair, being a part of a meeting such as this, you must excuse me for falling back into character for a moment. My next words shall come not as someone inserting themselves in either Imperial or political manners, but purely in my role as a mother. Tell Asuna only that which she needs to know to keep herself, and the First Empire, safe in navigating these disturbed waters. As Vicegerent Emerson speaks with the full authority of Chrysanthemum Throne, he shall have to take point on whatever we're presently facing and make those tough decisions if need be; remember that I picked him because I trust him, if Asuna is suffering from PTSD, especially mindful of my return to Rokkenjima and the implications therein, we all have a duty to minimize the impacts upon her moving forward."

"As you wish, your Majesty," Kado said as he dipped his head. "Rion, there are certain things I am allowed to do and those which I am not allowed to do under Rokkenjiman law in the area of collecting data on Rokkenjiman citizens. There is nothing in law, however, which concerns information which crosses my desk to from foreign sources regarding Rokkenjiman nationals. I shall thus ask that if there are any details your intelligence apparatus can ascertain regarding Rowe or Groves which would be relevant to my investigation you'd kindly see that information on my desk at your earliest convenience." With that Kado stood and walked out of the room without a further word. In his absence Beatrice sighed, "Rion, I must apologize for his conduct, he was always one Lucinda went to great lengths to keep me from. In that same vein, however, she spoke to his sense of duty to the Crown and despite all else, he's someone we can all trust."

"While he got caught up on you slapping him, which thank you, we have the matter of my sister which escaped his attention. How does that tie into all of this, if you have any insights there?" Under the influence of muscle memory she pressed the button upon her desk which, without fail, ensured one of her staff would bring to her a cup of tea at the perfect temperature. "Thank you," she said as they placed it on the desk, "My apologies," she added, "may I offer any of you a beverage?"

Rion looked at Kayleigh and Hazel and nodded meaning both left the room, Kayleigh undoubtedly heading straight for the Imperial Palace to get Emerson in the loop. Rion sighed and perched herself on Beatrice's desk "Trusting someone who gives you no reason to trust them is difficult, made even more so when they lie to you." Rion said "If we have to put a question mark against Rowe then that means we have to put an asterisk against the Rokkenjiman military whether it be army, navy or air force. What earned him the slap was that his agency said in the wake of the debacle between Rokkenjima and Daito that there were no collaborators or concerns within the Rokkenjiman military and now he tells me that at that time he was running an investigation into Rowe. He can't vouch for every solider, sailor and airperson in the military anymore than any general can of any fighting force. You're familiar with the phrase 'see the whole board' because your father tried to get it into you, well Kado's not seeing the whole board. When we start being forced to put question marks against people who are essentially professionally trained killers we're acknowledging things have the potential to get messy. He's worried enough to recommend that we not allow any Rokkenjiman military on Pyrena grounds, which is why Hazel's here because if a move is made then I want the best I've got protecting the key pieces." she looked Beatrice straight in the eye "Trust and you have never gone hand in hand you're pretty much renowned for not trusting anyone. It's my job and Kado's job to put the pieces together here, I will be telling your other sister and your father because if somethings up things need to be ready, it's your job to trust us to do our jobs, Gemma will keep Asuna safe, Kayleigh will take a look at stuff around Kyoko and if something is going on we'll figure it out. But I do need you to do one thing." she took a moment "Be prepared to throw your previous preconceptions of various things away, it's Hazel's job to look after you she can't do that if you're at odds." she slid off the desk and headed for the door.

As she listened to Rion she would sip her tea from time to time finding the beverage had emptied by the time she had concluded. "I think you'll find that you, too, shall find it necessary to toss aside preconceived notions and, perhaps, to update your files. I trust things are done differently in Valtheim, just as we'd find they're done differently in Northfort, Hematite, Tsargrad and, given our cultural similarities, I would be remiss not to mention Shinkyō. There come times when we saw Lucinda not inform me of details; she completed the task at hand, yes, but not everything was relayed to me. As a protege of Lucinda it seems to me that he's taken it upon himself to fulfill her empty station. Speaking of Lucinda, when he rose to the top of the INIS she gave me quite the briefing on him; prior to his intelligence service he fought in the Second Patriotic War, Navy, Loyalist. A Republican shell detonated above the bridge, he managed to save two other officers by knocking them down. You couldn't see it obviously, but his back bears the scars of that encounter to this day."

"Thus I reiterate that he is someone who can be trusted his actions, and Lucinda's assessment of him adds only further credence in my eyes. She would, after all, not allow someone who is a threat to the Anselmos to have the opportunity to harm them. We can also look back to the attack on Daitō and look at the facts. I spoke of an Oath earlier, one to Empire and Crown, if we're to assume that there is some nasty business which Rowe has found himself in he's vulnerable on that front. If there were a widespread issue therein don't you think they'd have mustered two squadrons of fighters for their opening act against the Empire instead of a mere two pilots? No," Beatrice paused as she stood and looked out of her window, "they had what I believe in some English cultures they call a "Hail Mary" and it wasn't enough to secure the full set of objectives they had there. Certainly they improvised in the aftermath, and I would wager that's the point when Rowe saw fit to intervene, to "live another day" as I believe they also say. Though I recognize that my return will only accelerate plans that are afoot; the People still look to me in trust, in many ways in love, my reputation upon the IRAF is second only to that of Empress Meishō I'd imagine. Trust that if push came to shove it would take only me speaking nationally to weed out those who are true to their oath and those who aren't, and I can only imagine that their own units would take care of them at that point."

"Though speaking on the matter of trust," she continued, "and why your files are in need of updating, I trust many people; my family both immediate and extended, Thatcher, King Michael, the Rhodes, the Ironsides, even you and your associates. I am sorry that you, and so many, came to know me best when I wasn't capable of fighting these threats. Charles made a mistake in whatever he's hatched in not killing me though, so long as I live so too does the mother of modern Rokkenjima, the woman who saw our victory over the Federal Republic that sought to kill our culture and that goes a long way in the hearts of a People. I know that precautions must be taken, however, with my innate knowledge of my People, the near voracity which many make in their Oath to serve Empire and Crown, I might have been gone for some time but there's things that don't just change overnight. I trust you'll find, absent the influence of whatever cocktail Ofdensen had coursing through my veins, I'm not who you think I am."

Before she had fully closed the door Beatrice would add, "If I may offer a suggestion, get Cole in on this too. He may be "retired" but I know him, he still receives intelligence briefings, still attends graduations and other ceremonies within the IRAF and while I may be out of touch so to say, he has his ear closer to the ground. I understand some across the various Branches have taken to calling him "Grandpa Cole", affectionately of course; he's been known to personally sign thousands of holiday cards to those in service who are estranged from their families or orphaned. If you want an ear into the mindset of the rank and file, he'd be an invaluable source."

RBC Livestream, Rishiri Imperial Overseas Dependency

"It is for those reasons that I, Princess Kyōko hereby renounce my place in the Line of Succession to Chrysanthemum Throne," Princess Kyōko said as she stood before her previous residence as First Minister of Rishiri. She claimed she had done her duty in Rokkenjima, that duties to Rishiri called upon her, and that her "faith in the future of the Empress is unshaken" precluded her from even needing her position there. Cecelia had joined her for this meeting, her mother, who proclaimed she could "never again serve as Empress" due to advanced age and a myriad of physical conditions. As they departed and returned to their car a face was there to close the door, but not before speaking to them both. "I'm pleased you made the right decision and allowed me to not stain my hands with blood in this case," Groves said with a sigh. "I know, it's difficult, but you did make the right choice. So long as you keep to your word you'll never see me again." After closing the door he hit the roof twice, and the two were taken to their housing upon the grounds of the mannor.

While he wasn't expecting to call upon Rion again so soon Rowe had made arrangements to meet her at his office. He opened the door, turned on the light and, much to his surprise, was greeted with a familiar scene. "Chair turned to the window as I enter my office, hmm, I did this earlier to another today," Kado said with a smirk. Unlike the previous instance, however, the chair whipped around as Lucinda rose, approached Kado, and had his neck pinned to the wall with her forearm. "Hello to you too," he said with laboured breaths and, after a moment had passed, she released him to catch his breath. "To what do I owe this pleasure to?" Kado asked. "We keep what we do away from her," Lucinda said in a monotone voice, "I can almost understand you wanting her to know certain things but you can't directly interact with her, we bloody our hands so that hers remain pure, understand?" Kado would nod, reaching for his back. "Don't be dramatic," Lucinda said without empathy, "I avoided placing any pressure upon points which would irritate your back. I know how to send a message without cruelty."

"I suggest you make your leave," Kado simply said, "I've a meeting with Rion. I can't imagine she'd be happy to see you in my office." "Can't imagine she would be," Lucinda replied in brevity, "you want Beatrice to know something you relay it through me and I will determine what is, and what isn't, beneficial for her to know. I've a responsibility to keep her safe and that is in all manners." She left the room as swiftly as she had pinned him, making sure that she retraced her steps to her suite with her husband who, thankfully, was still napping.

Kado resumed his posture swiftly before Rion's arrival, going straight to business as he pointed to a whiteboard. "Three figures," he began, pointing to the lower right corner which featured a picture of Groves. We call him the Chauffeur, he does the legwork and considers himself a strategist in this plot, but all he's here to do is open doors and guide people to their destinations. Following the elimination of Charles, honey allergy, mead, nicely done to yours by the way," he segued as he pointed to the next box, this time with a question mark. "We have the seagull that swims in the sky; I see the way you're looking and I didn't pick these names, these are codewords and phrases we've intercepted in communications. Anyway, we'll shorten that one to "Seagull", not much is known about them. If my instincts are correct, and they typically are, Seagull is their mole in the INIS; they relay things they hear and at times act on behalf of," he paused as he pointed to the top box, "Blue Silver. This is the most elusive one in all this," he paused, "is it Rowe, I have my suspicions there but everything I've gleaned from what I am legally able to glean from domestic surveillance, it's all circumstantial and wouldn't stand in court. That's where I hope you come in," he continued, "help me find out who Seagull is, to confirm who Blue Silver is, and help me get rid of that damned annoying Chauffeur. I promise, I'll allow my instincts to drop for some time if you promise me that nothing I say is relayed to the Empress or any in her family; there's certain things I cannot share with them, it's for their protection and plausible deniability in case things go sideways which, in such a case, should be my failing and not something which should impact them. In any case, the stage is yours, Rion," he said as he motioned with his hand to the board.

Rion took one look at the whiteboard "Pieces not players." she said "Maybe it's better to say pieces of the jigsaw but with no idea of the final picture? That's what I see when I look at this. A lot of inconsistencies, a lot of things that don't add up." she pointed at 'Blue Silver' "Assuming that's Rowe then what purpose does Groves serve? Certainly Groves is no gatekeeper to the Imperial Diet for an Imperial Councillor, which Rowe still technically is for a few more days at least while the constitutional transition works itself through, chances are Rowe could walk into the Diet building and get information that Groves can't, so he's something else that's for sure. Seagull makes sense and I'm going to say it." she looked at Kado "We told you so." she took a breath "Seagull is required regardless, and should be the easiest to trap when we get there, but for now they're not too troublesome." Rion took a couple of steps back from the whiteboard "Groves is in the legislative, the mole is in your intelligence and if that is Rowe then that's the military, all of them critical areas of state and all of them to some extent capable of posing a threat, at least in theory. Groves doesn't belong in the majority at the Diet so his role is something aware from there. When Charles was making his moves, Groves was the messenger boy he could easily be the same here. But there's still something missing here" her eyes darted all over the whiteboard before she picked up a pen and drew a box in which she put a question mark before drawing arrows from each of Kado's box's to the one she'd drawn "Who's the guiding mind? this smacks of someone picking up the ruins of Charles plot, breathing new life into it and running with it. But this time there's no advantage on our side, Charles failed because we knew what he didn't. This time there are no secrets, everything's on the board and..."

Rion took another breath "In any case Blue Silver potentially being Rowe is the most concerning factor here, because we have to plan worst case scenario's. So tell me who asked you to look into Rowe? And what's the address in Ashinaxo that he's been going to?"

"We'll call that box Rio," he said, noticing Rion's odd look. "What, if they've adopted a Duran Duran inspired naming convention, we may as well continue it," he paused before continuing. "I've been maintaining surveillance on a number of Rokkenjiman officials, considering none of the above the potential for betrayal; you'll be happy to know that my efforts have cleared your Count Emerson of conduct early on, he's quite the choir boy and quickly became most boring so I saved our taxpayers a few Ducats and ceased our observations there. Members of the Imperial Council are likewise somewhat boring but," he said as he pulled a photograph from a drawer in his desk, handing her a photograph of Lucius Stanley. "This one is keeping interesting patterns lately, and interesting company to boot. Out of the individuals we're observing his patterns have changed the most as of late; things as simple as not getting his morning apple fritter on his way to work, instead making a phone call around 7:45 AM just prior to walking into the office to begin his duties. I know, husband of the best friend of Beatrice, successfully returned home those who were unjustly tried by Transvaal, all around recognized as one of the "good guys" so to say. But, I would propose, what if that is his armour here? What secrets is he keeping from Lucinda in the bedroom?" he continued, "as I have here a late checkout from the Abruscato International Hotel in Ashinxao which places one Rika Miyano at the same hotel with a likewise delayed departure."

"As for who asked me to look into Rowe you need only to look as far as Princess Kyōko," he continued without missing a beat. "As for that particular address it's an interesting choice, multiple units contained within mind you, who's to say the stated unit is that which he ultimately ends up in? I can't access the records myself but via triangulation and wifi routers, I do believe if I heard your intelligence sources discovered something there, I could put a few puzzle pieces together, that is if you've been watching him. I just need that piece; it's there, everything points to it but it's at the moment the unreachable piece that just dangles beyond my immediate field of vision," he struck the desk aside him. "So close, yet so unattainable at the same time that is," he said using a finger to lower his glasses, "you have some information or sources you may call upon?"

Meanwhile, Asuna broke open a bottle of Pyrenan Mead, poured herself a glass, and drank it in quick succession, prompting a raised eyebrow from Serenity. "Look, there is much to unpackage here so forgive me and plus, I'm legal so don't judge me," she continued. "Sophia has found herself in a most difficult situation, she's found herself in love with a Toshikawan and my Gods, to some here still, that's still quite the sin. It's gotten to the point I've advised her that if things get too bad she declares Josai independent of Rokkenjima; I'll do what I can to protect her there but it's all so messed up, just because some people hold onto their prejudices so strongly, and that's someting I'm fighting to change. Sophia's been guided to the fight for Orion's Empress because of the type of Rokkenjima I hope to render wholly obsolete," she paused, "beyond doing what I can to ensure the IRAF does not seek to reclaim Josai if it goes independent, I don't quite know what I can do for her, even as Empress. Please," she stepped forward and took Serenity's hands into her own, "what the hell do I do here?"

"With what you've just said I don't really need sources." Rion said "And for the record I don't believe in the unattainable, there are times to be subtle and times not to be so subtle, this for the moment has become the latter. This conversation never happened and it goes without saying that under no circumstances does Lucinda find out about her husband, at least not until this is all over." she looked at the whiteboard again "Meanwhile I suggest you take that and get it somewhere out of sight, if Seagull finds out you've got anything like this then you know what the consequences of that are, whatever is coming and there's always something coming when dealing with plots like this, will happen before we're ready for it. First we need to be certain about Rowe, we need what we're missing, leave that with me. Groves's job is to deliver something that much is obvious but what, what is he positioning? Give him a loose leash and see where he goes, his movements will betray his intent and his part in this." she did another visual pass of the board "As much as I don't like leaving a mole embedded, Seagull's job is most likely to keep the other parties to this abreast of INIS activity and highlight any threat against any of them, Seagull can't report that which they don't know, so business as usual keep the circle small and when the time's right we'll catch them."

Serenity had stayed quiet, her ears were listening to Asuna but her eyes for large parts of what her niece had to say never left the bottle of mead, and that wasn't the worst of it, she could smell it in the air. As someone who was teetotal, and for good reason, the aroma of the alcohol in this concentration was offensive to her senses. Serenity closed her eyes and took a deep breath, channeling her maternal nature, the tough love that she knew she sometimes had to show her girls, picking up the bottle of mead she fixed Asuna with that honed piercing look of her green eyes, the one that gave the impression of seeing right through who she was looking at "What number glass is that today? What number bottle is this? Just because you're legally allowed to drink doesn't mean you get to drink as much as you like, that's how people lose themselves, that's how people get hurt and that's how the darkness seeps in. I've seen that abyss and walked away after the worst thing that ever happened to me happened." she stood up and pulled Asuna to her feet before essentially marching the Rokkenjiman Empress into her bathroom and shoving her into the shower, she turned on the cold water spray and blocked the exit "You can either be the Empress of Rokkenjima or you can be someone who copes by looking for answers at the bottom of a bottle. Your choice."

Half an hour later a drenched Asuna, now in a bath robe was sat down, Serenity put a cup of hot chocolate in front of her "Get that down you." Serenity said before sighing as she sat down next to her niece "I can't keep flying down here every time someone raises a concern about your behaviour, I came this time because it was certainly more serious than you galivanting around with Thomas on the Austrana again." she put an arm around Asuna "It strikes me what you need is a deterrent and what Sophia needs is a smoking gun. I'll make sure she gets what she needs and if she does declare Josai independent then I will play the part of protector, I'll stare the IRAF down, I'll give you reasons to think twice should be enough to keep your people on a leash and get a negotiated settlement out of it and hopefully no shots fired. Let me worry about Sophia, you start worrying about your wedding dress." she gave Asuna a kiss on the forehead "And if you can give you one other bit of advice, I don't care who you replace her with, find some random noble, make someone a noble if you must but for love of all that is holy get Evanthe back here because right now you decidedly lack when it comes to experience and judgement and she brings both in spades."

Kado chuckled, "We wouldn't want her smothering in his sleep, would we? No," he paused, "I don't quite imagine that would be her preferred method; she'd want him to know, to see it coming, and suffer with the knowledge of his impending doom. We both know that while she may love Lucius, her love for Beatrice is yet greater than that, do what you can and I'll do what I can in the meantime. My circle remains naturally small, I could likely count upon one hand those I trust with the full knowledge of what is transpiring divided by half. Until our next non-meeting," he said as she left.

It was only after she was in a bathrobe and with cocoa before her that Asuna would respond, "Thank you, and I've got that picked out already, just thinking what Thomas will think is just, wow," she continued. "But on Evanthe, she's made clear she's advocating for Rishiri these days, I'd love to hand things off to her for a few while I work my life out, I could declare her my Regent," she paused, "I mean Emerson is already here so I don't have too much prodding there to do. And what will Auntie Eva do when she's back?" she continued, enjoying her cocoa.

Serenity looked at Asuna "When people look at Rokkenjima, at least since the second Patriotic War, what they see is a nation of great promise, a nation that ten years ago was arguably the most prominent nation on the planet in international affairs and then they see how it all went wrong. I'm the biggest critic of your mother in my opinion she's foolish and stubborn, yet for all that criticism we can say that between her ascension to the throne in 2004 and the Andean Genocide she was the undisputed titan of domestic politics in Rokkenjima, an effective ruler at home but abroad? No. However what she did have was Evanthe who without question was the other side of the coin, what Beatrice had domestically Evanthe had when it came to international affairs, like it or not she has all the experience in that arena when it comes to any Rokkenjiman, which these days isn't saying much. But there's only so many times you get to play the inexperienced girl card and not do anything about it, you want to know what Evanthe can do? She can advise you, which frankly is something you need especially in the international arena." she said

Rion meanwhile was making multiple phone calls as she sat in her car, she didn't like making moves without knowing the players and there were a lot of questions involved in this. Still she did have options "Paul." she said over the phone "I need you to send Robyn's team down here with Michelle and Misty."
"Will do." came the voice of Paul Kessel "What's happening?"
"We've got to get in somewhere, put a bully in his place and uproot a snitch." Rion said
"Busy schedule then." Paul said
"I know." Rion said "Just get them down here."

"We'll see Evanthe brought back on as my Kōshaku; she'll have responsibilities in overseeing the Imperial Household Ministry as well as in foreign affairs officially. In effect, I'll be using the time which she is back to reflect, recuperate, and figure out where things move forward from here. She's someone I can trust to have both my best interests and those of the First Empire at heart, something I need in this moment. I'm sure Emerson will be happy to see her walking the halls of the Imperial Palace, too," she said with a knowing grin.

It wasn't in Lucinda's nature to sit by idly, so she had a chat with her friend known throughout the Rokkenjiman intelligence apparatus simply as <0 (less than zero). "I'm not acting in an official capacity," Lucinda paused, "but I get the impression that something is going on with certain figures. Kado's working his angles but, if I may offer a suggestion, I would like to encourage you to look a bit into the communications of the Grand Marshal and high-ranking staff, former Councilor Groves, maybe set ICON to look for keywords in broader INIS communications as well. "You're not supposed to be engaging in political or royal duties," <0 would respond, to which Lucinda chuckled. "I'm merely sharing ideas with a former colleague, plus, nothing we're discussing is of political or royal interests; we're discussing intelligence and military matters, a field we've both worked in for quite some time. Even then we're speaking on a secured channel, the records of which are purged upon completion; I am risking nothing in speaking with you in this manner. If you should be asked where you got your inspiration from, should the question be posed to you, Kado said to you "my envied lady holds you fast in her gaze." This group of conspirators seem to have a theme based upon the Chauffeur," which would see <0 interject, "...an interesting choice, one of their more dynamic songs if you ask me, but to..." "I know," Lucinda would continue, "musical tastes aside we're dealing with traitors. I'm in no position to be of assistance directly, but I think pointing pieces in the direction they need to be is something at least. You're perhaps the only person in the Empire that can tap and navigate ICON without detection, put that to its best use. Report findings to Kado and myself, I'll be staying at Pyrena with the Empress so if there's something I need to know which would be of benefit to her I trust you'll relay it to me. Hadley out."

It was 2:45 AM AST, Lucinda inched Beatrice's door open as she passed it in the residential wing of the Castle, a habitual occurrence as she returned to her own quarters. A note adorned her pillow, another late night in Ashinxao for Lucius as he navigated another difficult case. "Interesting," she said to herself aloud as she placed the note on the nightstand beside their bed. "You always found a way home before, couldn't suffer a night apart from me, you would say, what makes that same effort not worth it now? What has changed?" she said as she summoned <0 yet again. "What is it now?" she asked, "I was about to turn in for the night." "Add the Attorney for the Crown to your digital trespasses, nothing concrete, but his patterns have changed in my absence and I would like to know why." "You take snooping through a partner's phone to a new level, you know that?" <0 sighed. "It might be nothing, it might be something at the same time and you know, I don't take risks. Please do execute my request," she said as she hit the "end" button, before throwing the phone against the wall.

Kado welcomed Rion with her preferred morning beverage as he laid out a series of documents upon his desk. "<0 has been brought on the case," he said with a smirk, "they've never operated under the authority of the INIS, but through the Office of the Crown itself, even after Hadley's outfit was dismantled most unceremoniously. If I'm to understand her purview is digital surveillance of members of Imperial High Command, INIS, and one Lucius Stanley. I can promise you I said nothing to Lucinda of the activities of her husband, though I've heard through the grapevine that she's been left one too many letters on her pillow as to why her husband can't board a fast train back home whereas before he'd spare no expense to do so, but I do not believe she is treading on grounds she has no place in treading upon. I imagine <0 is acting at the behest of the Empress herself in this case, and we should move forward in treating these developments as such. Still, in less than a day, <0 has shown Stanley and Groves in the same vicinity through triangulation and Bluetooth pings between the phones of...one Lucius Stanley and one Randolph Groves. We've filled in our first line I'd say, would you concur?" he asked with a motion of his right hand toward where the whiteboard once stood.

"It exists only in our minds now," he continued, "but it is our duty to fill in the lines, identify the players, and eliminate them if ultimately necessary. Why would the Attorney for the Crown prefer the company of Groves over that of his wife? I must admit, if I were in Lucius' position, I know which one I would choose to keep company with, but that's a topic of discussion we won't tread today. How does he figure into this, which player is he, and who is the mole aiding this plot? I trust you understand that I will require that the mole face INIS procedures before handing them over for any crimes they may have violated on an international level, I do promise they'll be transferred alive though. On the same topic, <0 reports multiple efforts to mask activities related to the INIS in this plot; they've left them many folds to unfold, but with enough time they'll come through for us. Things are starting to get interesting," he said as he sipped his matcha, "strap in, so to say."

"You've got absolutely nothing." Rion said "Beyond mere coincidence, you've got nothing solid, Groves is a former member of the Imperial Diet, Lucius Stanley is Attorney for the Crown, there's a very long list of legitimate reasons why those two could be meeting." she paused for a second to make a quick phone call "Hazel kindly remind Lucinda that putting her stiletto's in a sensitive investigation is not helpful, if the threat is against either the state or the Anselmo's then she has to stay out of it." Rion put her phone away "Now where was I? Ah yes, there are multiple reasons both current and historic as why to Groves, Stanley and even Rowe would all be within close proximity so that's ridiculously thin, it's not really suspect and it wouldn't stand up to scrutiny so you don't have anything incriminating. Rowe and Stanley are new figures in this, if this goes back years and it likely does then they've stayed undetected so their not going to be using ICON or anything like that to communicate, also remember who Rowe is, he'll be more than aware of what you can do. He's also an experienced soldier if anyone's going to have picked up on the signs that Asuna's suffering from PTSD it'll be him."

Taking a moment to look at the whiteboard she ran her eyes from left to right "To be able to take down a plot you must first be able to see the shape of the game then you can plan an effective counter." she continued "This is a variation on Charles's plot you can see his fingerprints on it. But where we might have assumed a bridge to far with Charles I don't think we can in this case. Charles wanted to create a Constitutional crisis, essentially remove the monarchy for his own gain, he failed because he didn't know the big IVF secret. Now here we are almost a year later everyone in this knows that secret, this plot will have adapted to deal with that. So they'll have a plan to clear everyone out of the path but that won't help them because the Royal Family is beloved of the public, there's an endgame we're not seeing yet." she took a breath "Get me Groves's travel records, he's known to be an Ofdensen ally so that at least would look routine. Tell <0 they need to answer to you on this, if Lucinda pries around too much this could get a whole lot messier than either us would like and I doubt the Empress would be happy with having to say goodbye to her mother again having just had to negotiate bringing her home." she put what looked like a business card on Kado's desk except it had the contact details of a Justicar front on it. "Flip it over and hold under a uv light." she said "That's how you get hold of me while I'm out there shaking trees to see what falls out ok?"

"Very well," Kado answered, I'll step back for a moment and allow an outsiders perspective. I'll allow you to make our next contact," he concluded simply. Kado would see Rion off with the travel records before begining the tasks he'd set before him for the day, and a long one it would prove to be. After a discussion with Evanthe while he didn't know quite who her equivalent would be in East Moreland, he directed that she should utilize new tools allowed for under the Guardtower Provisions in deploying Full Spectrum's data collection capabilities upon Rokkenjiman citizens, issuing a rare exception for her to share intelligence collected upon Rokkenjiman nationals with them. "Two, perhaps three in this case, set of eyes are better than one's own," he sighed as he place his phone on the desk.

Upon his return home Lucius could feel Lucinda's eye on him, "is everything alright, honey?" he asked, which prompted Lucinda to pin him to the nearest wall. "You lying sonofabitch," she said as she held her forearm to his neck, "I don't know how you thought deception would play with me, but I can tell when things change between two people. You send me to voicemail, you try to let the rings finish as if you didn't but you're always a few seconds too quick before the tone stops signaling a ring on my end," she continued pinning him even more tightly to the wall. "So, who is she, a Rokkenjiman courtesan perhaps, or some foreign cocotte? I promise I'll figure it out either way. The only thing holding me back right now is Beatrice encouraging me to act "rationally" so my rational act is this; we'll live in separate suites from here on out and until you prove yourself to me again, that arrangement will continue." Though he offered protests she saw his attempts swiftly dismissed, "For now, you stay away from me, you understand? Clear yourself, there is no other option for you in regards to me, no future to look forward to; until then go back off to Ashinxao; know, however, if you go back there that you've betrayed me. Also," she paused as she walked to the door.

"Also? What more do you have to say that could only serve to break my heart further?" he asked. "Also," she repeated without emotion, "I'll think I'll just leave it upon you to ruminate upon just what that means. Good night, Lucius, and if you should decide to disclose anything, our interaction, what we upon, how you got a bruise or two on your neck to anyone, Rokkenjiman or Achkaerinese, you know I've always maintained insurance in any actions I take. Sleep tight, my love," she said in a rare occurrence of sarcasm, "I won't be seeing you in the morning, not unless you decide to be honest with me.

The term Deja vu could easily be applied to this meeting, a sunny day in Rokkenjima was the backdrop as Serenity perched on her desk at Commonwealth House - her property in Rokkenjima, she was looking at the large screen on the wall of the study, it wasn't the USS Enterprise by any means but the screen was pretty decent in size, on it she could see the Round Table room in the Marble Palace and had video feeds to other advisors and heads of agencies as required. "Hit me with it what do we think?" Serenity asked
"I agree with Rion's assessment." Sally Barkley, the head of Achkaerinese Intelligence, said "This reads like a variation on the Ofdensen plot, but probably far more refined. If so then whatever Charles knew we have to assume these conspirators know and of course they will stuff that Charles didn't. I don't however think the destination is the same."
"Neither did I." Rion said
"Why?" Richard Chambers, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, asked
"Because Charles's plot a year ago was to take a wrecking ball through the Anselmo's and create a Constitutional crisis. If Alex Rowe and Lucius Stanley are involved then we're talking about people who know very well that the Rokkenjiman public is loyal to the Crown these days, they know there's no appetite to remove that. Charles wanted a Presidency I think Stanley and Rowe know that a lame duck monarch is better." Rion said
"The journey is the same, take the Anselmo's out of the line of succession, but this isn't to create a crisis it's to clear a path." Sally said
"For?" Serenity asked
"I don't know yet." Rion said "But I will."
"How serious of a threat is this?" Mark Sharpe, the national security advisor, asked
"Rowe and Stanley can't move uninhibited, which is why Groves is involved," Rion said "He's there to clear the path. Stanley's there to be the voice in the ear and Rowe's the military man, it's a shadow government play."
"Rowe's an experienced soldier." Peter, Serenity's father, said "If anyone knows how to spot PTSD it's him."
"Which may be the play." Rion said "Groves clears the path and meanwhile Rowe keeps an eye on Asuna, pile on the stress and eventually she'll crack, she takes herself out."
"What's the endgame?" Peter asked
"I don't know yet but I'll find out." Rion said "Meanwhile I'm going to start operations to try and start getting to the bottom of this."
"What do we think their timescale is?" Serenity asked
"Your Majesty." Major Kirby of the MDI said "Based on everything said this reads like a long game, there's no value in moving quickly because everything changes in a week and we all know what happens if the Rokkenjiman Empress isn't in post tomorrow."
"Taking Asuna off the board now so soon after Kyoko would be very suspicious." Rion said "And very much a needless risk considering the PTSD, if you're Rowe you let her destroy herself and if she doesn't you take her out when it's safe."
"They don't have a quick run to the line so they're going to make it a marathon."  Serenity said "Ok then. Nettie tell me about this Sophia business."

"Considering what the implications are and how Mundus usually reacts to what Asuna is attempting to set up, Sophia's going to need something to base this whole thing on." Nettie said "It won't go down well in the Diet. I think the best bet is for someone to go looking in the archives of the Diet, somewhere in there there will be an Act that recognises the independence of Josai, it'll be from the Federal Republic days, so find it and then look at how Josai came back under Rokkenjiman control. If that's suspect and considering who Beatrice's advisors were at the time it's quite possible it is then Sophia has her smoking gun and you have the means to step into the staring contest."
"What exactly are we talking about in that regard?" Adam Sheppard, the Minister of Defence, asked
"If Sophia declares Josai independent then there's going to be pressure in Rokkenjima for Asuna to retake it." Serenity said "So if that declaration comes then we're going to get diplomacy going right out of the gate, we're going to guarantee the security of Josai think of it like what Rokkenjima used to do with the JPS."
"Counting on the fact that Rokkenjima isn't going to want to risk a fight." Peter said nodding "Rowe may just go looking for one then."
"If he does he exposes himself." Serenity said "We'll make sure Rokkenjima has reasons to think twice, giving Asuna enough to not order military action and hopefully this goes off without a shot being fired. And then when the dust settles Asuna and Sophia agree a treaty that establishes the relationship between the two."

"Rion how do you intend to start chipping away at this?" Peter asked
"I'm going to start trying to get under Rowe and Stanley's skin, there's a storage lock up that Rowe's got a unit in though we don't know which unit, so we're going to do a little B&E on that." Rion said "Stanley's apparently been meeting with a woman called Rika Miyano, not sure whether it's business or pleasure but that's irrelevant. We're going to do a deep dive on her and see how they run when the heat is turned up. The INIS mole isn't an issue because none of what we're doing runs through the INIS office, this is going to be a blindside. We start chipping at them and see what they do."
"Do it." Serenity said "Same time tomorrow."

The meeting over Serenity looked at Rion, who'd been in the study the whole time, "If Alex Rowe and Lucius Stanley were involved in Charles's plot then is it possible they were involved years ago?" Serenity asked
"Yes." Rion said "And I'd like to start assuming that to be the case."
"So if we want to confirm this we're not going to find anything electronically?" Serenity asked
"It'd be suspicious if we did, all of Charles's communications, ICON, phone records, emails they were all evidence weren't they?" Rion said
"They were." Serenity said
"I do need to ask this." Rion said "If Rowe or Stanley start to pose too much of a danger..."
"I know and I'll tell you when we get there if we get there." Serenity said "What do you think the endgame is?"
"I think they want a puppet, isolate Asuna and maybe you manage that but she's not isolated, Thomas, Evanthe, Emerson, McKenna, Gemma..." Rion said "They need someone else."
"Find out if you're right." Serenity said

Content warning – this post discusses suicidal feelings.

It was late, far too late for many to be walking the grounds of Pyrena Castle, a fact which Asuna had counted upon. It was easy enough for her to walk away from the grounds of the Imperial Palace and, with Lucinda's unwitting assistance, even easier for her to get inside of Pyrena Castle. She recalled memories as she walked through the halls, smiled at the spot her and Lucius had shared a tender and treasured moment many years ago by this point in time, she elected to linger there for a moment to take it in before proceeding. The steps up the tower, the highest of the Castle, were numerous but she found some joy in travelling them. In a way, they represented both the start, and end, of a journey. An open window, the cold winds which were natural owing to Pyrena sitting atop a hill, hit her face and almost assaulted it with each push they offered but, to her, they were inviting, even as the courtyard sat quite a ways beneath her.

She took in a breath, held it, and let out a long, hard sigh. Another moment like this would not present itself, she told herself, if anything was to be done to bring an end to this insurmountable challenge it had to be here, now, and in this moment. She looked back to the room behind her, in her younger days she'd have toys and story books strewn across the floor, and to be honest she found it fitting for the purpose of the evening. Gently she raised her legs from the floor and sat upon the window sill, her legs dangling precariously above that very court yard. If nothing else the stone below would still do its job, even with the bit of snow that had fallen the night before, and then the pain would cease, the nightmares, the faces of those who suffered she could not scrub from her mind. She'd left notes for all the important people in her life, including an apology to Gemma assuring her that she couldn't protect her from the demons within and that she appreciated all she had done and yet, just as her body lunged forth from the ledge she felt a strong force pull her back from the window, landing on her back upon the floor behind her.

"You, why?" she said as she raised herself and began punching their chest, "you were supposed to be asleep, and how dare you deny me?" "Deny you what," they sighed, "This," they continued as they pointed to the window, "is not the answer, it solves nothing, it leaves a concert of broken hearts and given your position quite possibly a broken world behind. I know your heart," they said as they pointed to the centre of her chest, "I know both the joys and pains contained in there, I also know the strength in there too. Please," they said as they offered their hand, "we'll say you missed your mum, you came to see her and she was asleep so you decided to take in some memories while you were here, where you grew up. No one has to know except for me, just the next time you feel you have no other choice but this?" they paused as they brought her in and held her close, "I don't care the hour or the circumstances; I could be on my death bed and I would get up to make sure you don't seek a solution that solves nothing, not for you or anyone else. It's going to be a long and hard road but we'll face it together. You took on a name that translates as "starlight" please," the hug grew tighter, "don't let that light die, alright?"

"Oh, you," she said as she fought back tears and gripped back yet tighter, "I'm so sorry, it's just so hard to see an out here, even harder to see how to turn all of this around, it seemed just, if I wasn't here maybe there wouldn't be so many problems. And here you are, saving me not from an uneven floor, but something more dangerous. Did you follow me here?" she asked, to which he silently nodded. "I can't even be angry," she sighed, "I really need to talk to someone, professional even, I can't keep doing this on my own or trying to. Can you forgive me for being so..."

He held his finger to her lips and made a "shhh" sound, "Don't finish that sentence, and as you wish," he said as he pulled her back in and cradled her head against his shoulder. "When you're ready to go back to the Palace I'll see it done discreetly." After seeing that she had calmed he sent word to Gemma, making sure she would make it clear he had no involvement in her discovery of the events of the evening while adding "We keep this between us, if there are those counting on her falling apart they can't have any indication of it, just help her please."

Ashinaxo

The pitter patter of rain on the windscreen of the van was the soundtrack as Robyn Mears (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg662#msg662) and Joe Ochre (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg664#msg664) sat in the front of the vehicle looking at the storage facility, if intel was right then something important to Rowe was in there, they had no idea what it was and honestly they didn't really care at the moment no that would come later. The facility itself was home to multiple storage units, each presumably rented by different people. As jobs went this was towards the easier end of the difficulty scale break into the facility, create a mess, get out and then wait to see who turned up in the morning. "Ok then." Robyn said "Joe you do the door, I'll take the security, Ash you back me up and then you've got the computer, Anthony you help Joe break into the units and mess the place up."
"Balaclava's, gloves and all that on." Joe said.
"How long does the sedative last?" Anthony (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg666#msg666) asked
"A few hours." Robyn said "More than enough to get this done." she took a breath "Let's do it."

The group of four made their way up to the door of the building, gloves on and faces covered, it was easy for Joe to take the small ram, the type usually issued to law enforcement, and put the door in then it was all go. Robyn and the final member of the team Ashley (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg665#msg665) had the one security guard at gunpoint and then with a cloth over his mouth he was out. Ashley was into the computer shortly thereafter using the guards access card "We're on the clock." she said
"Get a copy of the list and then wipe the security." Robyn said as the sound of ransacking courtesy of Joe and Anthony could be heard, secured containers were being opened, their contents turned out onto the floor.
"Unit sixteen." Ashley said
"On it." Joe said opening that unit up and beginning to turn it over
"Five minutes." Robyn said "What have you got?"
"A laptop, a tablet, military medals, some what I guess are family heirlooms." Joe said
"Good work." Robyn said "Time to go."

Getting out was easier than getting in, straight out of the door they'd come in through and then to the van, which they'd drive out into the countryside and well away from the scene of their would be crime, the van's false plates would be removed and the colour changed once they were away from prying eyes. In theory that was the fire lit now they just needed to wait and see who turned up to check their belongings in the morning.

Commonwealth House

"Asuna did what?!" Serenity asked over the phone, she was sat in bed having been disturbed in the night by the phone call from Kayleigh, next to her Euphy was looking just as concerned as she could hear everything Kayleigh was saying
"She got onto Pyrena's grounds, as did Thomas, and then according to what Gemma's been told nearly threw herself out of the window." Kayleigh said "Hazel's got them now and Gemma's on her way to pick them up, thank heaven's she tripped the motion sensors in the tunnels." she took a breath "Thomas asked Gemma for help, but I can't advertise this domestically anymore than I can ignore that Asuna's got one hell of a mental health issue right now. Keeping her in place is one thing but she's got to be capable and right now she's not, any help has to come from outside."

Serenity looked at Euphy, 'help her' Euphy mouthed at Serenity who nodded "Kayleigh, clear Asuna's diary." Serenity said "It's winter she can go on holiday officially speaking right?"
"Well yes but if something happens..." Kayleigh said
"If something happens Rokkenjima needs an Empress who knows what she's doing." Serenity said "Clear her diary, have Gemma bring her down here I'll make the arrangements for professional help... If Thomas wants to come along that's fine as well."
"I'll tell Emerson and Evanthe then." Kayleigh said "If anyone asks the Empress is spending time with family."
"Don't tell Beatrice under any circumstances." Serenity said
"I won't." Kayleigh said

When the morning came around at Commonwealth House it was a somewhat different one to the norm. When Gemma parked the car up around the front and proceeded to help Asuna out of it Serenity opened the front door of the house and showed Asuna inside "I've made some arrangements but this is my house so my rules." Serenity said taking Asuna down the hall to one of the spare bedrooms that she and Euphy had spent the early morning getting ready, it was very spartan, a simple bed, a table, a washing basket and an en suite bathroom. The whole point had been to make sure there was no prospect of Asuna being able to harm herself in there. As much as Serenity didn't want to be harsh she did know she needed to be firm, Asuna making errors based on political or diplomatic inexperience was one thing but this was something else entirely.

Waiting in the readied room for Asuna was Michelle Frost (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg12928#msg12928), Rion had brought Michelle down to Rokkenjima for other reasons but this now took precedence, she was a qualified psychologist. "Asuna this is Michelle she's a psychologist." Serenity said "She's going to help you."

Michelle waited patiently "Please give your aunt your phone, tablet and any other electronic devices." Michelle said "And then you should wash and change." she indicated the white hospital scrubs that were folded on the bed "This isn't a prison but we are taking precautions for everyone's safety including yours. I'll explain the rest after you've washed. Ok?"

Joining investigators in response to the fire in Ashinxao would be investigators from the 5th Directorate General, a subdivision within Imperial High Command. While on paper it was known to offer assistance to localities in the region in investigating certain matters, it largely operated as the intelligence arm of the Grand Marshall; a fact which would be familiar to few outside of Imperial High Command beyond Kado, Lucinda, and those they'd chosen to share their knowledge on the 5th Directorate General with. While the fire had certainly caught his attention, Kado took little action on his part, he was certain he would hear about it either from operatives from Achkaerin or the INIS.

Asuna took in the full joy of a shower, perhaps the longest she had ever taken in her life, taking in the full warmth of the water as it hit her skin, taking extra time to massage shampoo through her hair as she washed it, before rinsing, drying and dressing herself. Sat again before Frost she sighed, "I'm not sure how I should begin. Do I begin as so many stories often do; I was born, I grew up, or do we begin at the moment I saw the bodies, the ultimate perversions of what humanity is capable of; the moment where a part of me died perhaps? I was prepared," she paused, "I was determined, even,  that if they didn't stop I would unleash a hell unknown to any upon Mundus upon those who did that and I'd see that their capacity to hurt further lives was cut short by wholly obliterating them. I considered obliterating countless people to save countless people and I have to wonder, am I any better than them in that regard? How many lives do you have to prevent an end to, by killing others, before you become a monster yourself?" she paused as she let the question linger. "Dozens, hundreds, thousands, maybe? They're lucky in that aspect," she again paused, "that the Daitōjinese were leading the charge, not me, because what I had in mind for them was much, much worse. So much so that I question whether I am still worthy of the graces of Islyna in the afterlife, I mean, respect your adversaries? Where does that line end? Where does the line move from "respect" to "removing a ready threat to human decency" I have to ask? Upon which line do we, you and I, as good spirited people, become evil in excising evil from our world?"

"Thomas made me remember something though," she continued, "I chose my reginal name for a reason, to be light to those without light, and to snuff that out would be against all I believe in. At the same time, I can't hold my hand while people are committing such evils, I can't hold myself back and it was only advice from those with more experience than myself that stood between those dickheads and 300+ Rokkenjiman missiles. And even in that, I'm talking about hundreds of deaths as if it's nothing," she took a moment, "and I, myself, am alright with that, they deserve no compassion from my heart, and at the same time that isn't who I am. There is so much to reconcile here, and I don't even know where to begin. What's the prognosis in that?"

Meanwhile, at the Imperial Palace, Evanthe made a decision. "We keep this quiet, anyone speaking to the press on the status of the Empress will be treated as conspirators to treason," she sighed. "I will stand in for the Empress in these times, as someone with the experience in the position, the least I can do is give her the cover she needs to navigate this part of her course, I know our contacts and I know our weaknesses, thus I am best positioned to navigate these troubled waters. Everything runs by me, but we ensure that the Empress may defer once she is back on the Throne. She entrusted me with her appointment and I will see that her vision is protected, guarded and executed even in her absence. It's the least I owe to her, after all."

Emerson looked at Evanthe and sighed "If anyone asks and they will at some point because the longer this goes the harder covering it gets." he said "We say Asuna is visiting family in the run up to her wedding, we'll get Kayleigh to work with Nick Craig and create a narrative that adds up if anyone asks for details. The Imperial Council isn't due to meet for the foreseeable future for a variety of reasons so that keeps certain people at distance. Everything that comes in comes across my desk I'm the Viceregent, with Asuna on 'holiday' that attracts the least attention because it's routine. Anything comes up we deal with it as it happens, we don't tell anyone we don't trust. Decision making goes through you but all mechanisms must appear to be consistent with the norm and let's not get create the Constitutional mess that certain people would like to see."

Michelle took a breath, looking at Asuna clad in those white hospital scrubs, "It sounds like your grappling with things that every world leader does." she said "Now before we go further I need to explain a few things." she took a breath "In these sessions you do benefit from doctor patient confidentiality however that has it's limits you can tell me whatever you like but not everything is privileged, that's the standard disclaimer so to speak. Considering last nights antics I am going to be electronically tagging you as a precautionary measure. You aren't a prisoner but it's important to know where you are while you're here and we'll save Gemma a load of stress. I don't want to have to lock that door but I will if you think I should or give me reason to. Put your leg up please." she waited for Asuna to raise her leg before putting the electronic tag around her ankle  "For a place to start, tell me what prompted last night."

"We'll do what we have to do" she said with a sigh, "I have faith in her though," she smiled, "Anselmo women aren't typical."

"I didn't care what came next," Asuna would respond, "I care what comes next now. I was pressured by the Imperial Rokkenjiman Military to say things I'd never want to say, I wanted to tell them to fuck off if we're to be speaking on an honest basis, but I couldn't in that moment in time so I faltered, I took the blame on myself and I thought it was my fault but it isn't, truly. This is my show, I am who the People trust and I won't let them down, I admit I had a moment of weakness but now," she paused as she looked out to the window, "now my only desire is seeing that they fail, and I am in a position to laugh as they fall down the slope of disgrace, to meet them at the bottom with a grin. The difference is," she paused, "that night I thought I had nothing to live for but today, I have everything to live for. I can only hope we can wrap this up soon," she paused, "I have my sights set on people who are truly horrible, they wanted to win here but I'm here to stand and say "no, you thought," and deliver failure to them personally. I promise you," she said motioning to Michelle, "my desire to take these assholes down is much, much, greater than seeing my demise. And I have to know normal people don't do what I saw, I have to believe that people are greater than that level of utmost barbarity, and I'll have that faith and carry it forward. At the same time, I won't ever allow anyone to experience what they did, I'll do all I can as Empress to destroy their ability if I even suspect them of devising such a path."

Asuna would pause, "I had a moment, I accept you can help me but I am needed there," she said, pointing in the direction of the Imperial Palace. "I appreciate you, Serenity, everyone but I have a job to do. As I don't see my life ending before Thomas and I have seen our great-grandchildren enjoying their Christmas gifts I think any indications I might end my life before then have been excluded from consideration. I have bad people to fight," she sighed, "I'll let you do your job here. Please," she asked in an almost pleading manner, "don't keep me from protecting my people for long, they need my fire right now."

Michelle took a deep breath, Asuna was mentally speaking all over the place that wasn't surprising considering the events of the last twenty four hours it also didn't surprise her that Asuna had gone from grappling to deflecting to attempted bargaining, it was textbook. "You're not the first person I've said this to and I doubt you'll be the last." Michelle said "The first step is always admitting there's a problem. As an initial and probably provisional assessment just off the few minutes we've been talking I'd say you have a couple of problems, you clearly have a stress issue but I think there's more to it, those moral quandaries aren't born of stress they're born from something else." she smiled "Stress is a natural trigger, not just for you but for everyone on Mundus and everyone has a different threshold for when they snap. Consider your grandfathers relapsing-remitting MS, he has to avoid high stress situations or he risks an MS episode. The question isn't what creates the stressful situation, it's what controls the stress to begin with."  she took another breath "That's the journey here, we figure out what's got a hold of you, we confront it and then we overcome it.  You're no good to anyone if you can't control your own demons and fears." she glanced at the window it was a nice bright day now "How about we sort you out some lunch and then we'll continue this out in the garden?"

It was Rion's turn to play the role of 'chair occupier' she was waiting for Kado when he got back to his office "Interesting isn't it?" she said after he walked in "That someone would use a crime to cover up a different persons crime." she saw Kado's eyebrows raise behind his glasses and almost giggled at what that did for his facial expression "We shook the tree, we didn't burn it down." she put a photograph and a copy of the facilities client list on the desk before finally yielding the chair "We found a laptop, tablet, medals and assorted other things in Rowe's unit. We cloned the laptop hard drive and tablet. Now you tell me given that nothing is actually physically missing why would anyone set a fire? Did someone panic or did someone carry out a contingency plan? Have we inadvertently found something that is that much of a threat? If we have then we may have the means to ground Seagull."

Asuna would nod, "that seems like a good idea." She would think of the words shared with her, "If it were a few years earlier I'd have one of the boxes with me now, either mum or dad would make them, mum's were always better though, surrounded by friends for lunch, taking in the current gossip; life was easier then. I'm sure whatever is in store will be good though."

Kado grinned, "There's always been a bit of rivalry between the IRN and the IRGF (Imperial Rokkenjiman Ground Forces) and it seems someone has forgotten their IRN lineage. We would hold friendly competitions between the two services, IRN would apply a methodical approach to the situation whilst IRGF would find whatever manner they could to destroy the problem. Different philosophies," he paused, "but also the root as to why IRN won those friendly competitions for so many years, to the point where IRGF simply stopped showing up. Someone's saw a problem and they've attempted to destroy it, inadvertently showing more they sought to reveal in the process. If my intuition is correct, in the coming hours we should see some interesting activity from Imperial High Command. I suggest we all stay tuned as to what that might be."

Alex chuckled for a moment as his car moved beyond the gate to the Imperial Palace. "It's no Pyrena," he said to the driver, "I bet the place doesn't even have a functional TARDIS in the basement. But," he paused, pointing to some of the trees and gardens on his way to the main building, "my daughter has an impeccable sense of taste. It's been so long, well, since I've properly been there for here, all the difficulties of the trial and such, but I had to take that step, brave the difficulties of coming back, and reuniting with Beatrice to restore our family after all we've been through, the moment was right." When they were welcomed into the Imperial Palace it was not Asuna who awaited them but Evanthe and Emerson. "Welcome back to Rokkenjima, 'lex," she said, using the nickname she knew crawled under his skin. "Thanks, 'vanthe," he returned, not skipping a beat, "Sad to see you all ditched Pyrena, but proud of my daughter for making her own mark on things. Where is she, by the way? I know I haven't lived up to my promise to be there always, but I'm here now; while I'll officially be residing at Pyrena I'll be spending more of my time here. Eva..." he paused, "please drop with the silence," he continued, registering that something was amiss.

With tears forming in the corners of her eyes Evanthe looked to her side, "Emerson, I can't," she said with a gasp. "Alex, forgive me," she continued as she walked into a side room and wept as silently as she could. Many things weighed upon her heart and her mind, foremost her failure to properly ensure Asuna's ascension would be seamless and easy for her. "No, don't you dare," she said as she looked to a mirror above the fireplace, "You got yourself a second chance, you do what you need to make the most of it. Failure," she said as she turned away briefly, before looking upon her reflection again, "is not an option here. I got this." She hoped Emerson would forgive her emotions failing her and that he would use his best judgement moving forward. Alex wasn't a concern in funneling information anywhere, she wagered; if he had to keep things from Beatrice, as he did during the Andean affair, she was confident he would do so now. She did her best to compose herself and rejoined them.

"I'll leave it to your discretion, but I feel that involving Alex in this process would be of great benefit to the Empress. If you disagree I trust you'll let me know, but I'm asking that you'll trust my instincts here." A confused Alex locked eyes with Evanthe, then Emerson. "Just what in the hell is going on here? Is my daughter alright?" He left his eyes trained on Emerson awaiting a response.

The problem Emerson had was that it was somewhat suspicious that Alex didn't know there was something going on after all one, very much ill advised, press release in the previous seventy two hours had called all of Mundus's attention to the fact that not all was well at the heart of Rokkenjima. That said the odds of Alex being in any way involved in whatever they were up against was slim wasn't it? Well logically at least. "She's safe." Emerson said "But you know there are things that government officials can't say and this is one of those times. It's also the case that neither myself or Evanthe have the full picture, to get that I suggest you talk to Charlotte's favourite 'aunty' she can probably tell you what we can't and if she can't then she certainly has the means to point you to who can."

Rion raised an eyebrow at Kado "I'll let you know what we get off the laptop. The last thing I expect the IHC to do is anything to attract attention especially now that they've been alerted and we've been put on the defensive." she said "Getting the upper hand back isn't so easy when you lose the stealth advantage. We'll watch and wait and with a bit of luck we'll get something to go off. The stakes just got raised and we're going to have to call or raise soon. But best not to do that without all the cards and players. However it's not like we're completely out of options, how do you feel about ruses?"

The reason Rion was good at her job was that she had a true understanding of the maxim 'see the whole board' she'd known that to remove Kyoko from the line of succession in Rokkenjima was a bold move, a risky one and yet clearly one that had a reason it did do many things - it was a step towards isolating the Empress, it removed an experienced figure from the equation. But the question that hung over it was why? What leverage did these conspirators have over Kyoko to force her to take such a step? Well this was where Mei (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg20162#msg20162) came in, fresh off the heels of the annual Ambassadors forum in Valtheim, she was the newly appointed ambassador to Rokkenjima - a move that had been expected based on her having grown up as Kyoko's sister. Now though Mei found herself walking into what was politely put 'Kyoko's house' - Rishiri. As an ambassador the cloak and dagger shenanigans of Achkaerinese intelligence were not matters she usually found herself involved in, however her relationship with Kyoko was thought a suitable enough cover to ask the question and while people in the intelligence community may have been pulling their metaphorical hair out over the press release it did help, even if it helped far less than it hindered.

Knocking on the door she waited to be shown in, when she was she smiled "You don't call, you don't write, what did you go off into space and not tell anyone or hibernate or something?" Mei said cracking the joke before sighing as they sat down "Ok serious question and then we can do whatever. What does Groves have on you that forced you out?"

"And who do you think taught your mother how to make those lunches?" Serenity's voice carried into the room from the kitchen, Michelle had opened the door just before Asuna had spoken so the sound had carried "In case you're wondering that would be your grandfather."
"That'll mean she's making lunch then." Michelle said heading out of the room and straight down to the kitchen, a few moments later Gemma (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg15577#msg15577) walked in carrying a tray laid with food and drink, putting it on the table she closed the door and sat down to eat with Asuna. In the kitchen Michelle was splashing some water on her face, trying to think about everything she'd heard.
"That bad?" Serenity asked
"Somewhat." Michelle said "I think I know what the problem is but the root cause is a whole other ball game."
"Think you can help?" Serenity asked
"Yeah." Michelle said quietly as Gemma came back with an empty tray "Just got to figure out who I'm talking to, a girl with the weight of the world on her shoulders worrying about moral quandaries or this almost frightening persona spoiling for a fight."
"That's her Freya mask." Gemma whispered prompting an eyeroll from both Serenity and Michelle. "The moral quandaries girl is Asuna, the rest is her rather poor poker face."

After lunch it was time for a stroll in the garden, it wasn't a huge patch of greenery like in various palace grounds but it was decent, there was a small bit of decking, stone steps down to a swimming pool, a well kept amount of grass where Serenity's daughters were kicking a soccer ball around and then a very small orchard which was self contained within the grounds and from where you could look out at the lake and the small island, the latter was also part of the property. It was the orchard where Michelle and Asuna found themselves.
"We normally don't show this." Michelle said taking what looked like a leather wallet out of her pocket and opening it inside Asuna could see Michelle's ID but also behind where the badge was there was a picture (https://i.pinimg.com/originals/e0/97/5d/e0975dd7047403b9519b260f57fa4cb4.jpg) "It's called a heaven and hell picture, they're used to show the contrast between good and evil, light and dark etc." she took a breath "They mean different things to different people, to some they can be about redemption, to others the consequences of sin. But to the Justicar, and we all have one, they remind us of why we're called the Angels and Demons of Achkaerin, most of the time we're the angels we're the protectors, the shield but we also know there are times we need to step into the shadows time's we must do that which we cannot speak of and what we will likely never be forgiven for. We don't go eagerly into the dark, but we go willingly because we know it must be done, you wondered earlier about when we become evil, if you want to be arbitrary about it there are people right now on your side who have done that which would be considered evil, the key difference between them and you is their preparation, their training and that's true in the most basic of tasks you find yourself dealing with all those moral quandaries are largely created by the pressure and stress you feel because you've never been there you've not been prepared for it."

Taking a moment to look out at the lake Michelle smiled a little "I'll tell you a story from history to see if it makes more sense, the Achkaerinese civil war in the late 1600's early 1700's is known for a great many things most famously it's remembered for how it ended, sword on sword single combat between Djana Azurewind the future Empress and Caleb Elsif, eldest son of the traitor house but also consider this Caleb was the father of Djana's son, he was the man she loved, inside the great arena in Valtheim she cut him down and ended the war, she robbed her own son of a father and herself of a likely husband but that death saved thousands that would have died in pitched battle. Now the thing that sometimes gets forgotten is that Djana is the one who threw the gauntlet at the feet of Caleb's father and that he refused to pick it up so Caleb did. You see the catch twenty two? It's what's called the bad call situation, or to use the popular culture reference it's the Kobayashi Maru, there was no victory for Djana but she made her choice. I appreciate you're not in school anymore but a little homework for you, think about what that means." taking a breath she thought for a moment, which also gave Asuna the opportunity to absorb what she'd said

Putting her warrant card away Michelle looked at Asuna "There's a bit of folklore in Achkaerin, it goes like this 'The Empire will not fall while the brave raven watches over the Fox.' it's about the ravens that live in the Temple of the Brave but the funny thing about folklore is that it can take on new meaning as Justicars we all have callsigns mine's 'Shuffle' and my boss's is 'Raven' can you probably guess why she chose it." she said putting her hands on Asuna's shoulders and pivoting the Empress so she was looking at where Gemma was doing juggling tricks with a soccer ball, much to the amusement of Astrid and Lisa, "Gemma's is Karasu I think you know what that translates to, wonder why she chose that? What if we change the story? 'The Empire will not fall while the brave raven flies in the starry sky.'  The old saying is a problem shared is a problem halved, Gemma's not just charged with your physical safety, she's charged with the protection of your immortal soul that's your mental and spiritual sides, that's what your Grand Maester says, she's your companion soul so perhaps it's time you let her in and stop treating her with contempt."

Michelle still had her hands on Asuna's shoulders as he nodded to Serenity who walked over "Now as for your moral quandaries, you spoke about obliterating a lot of people because they'd done harm but..."
"Much like your mother you couldn't see the whole board." Serenity said "I can't tell you no one would have died if you'd fired those missiles but I can tell you the death count wouldn't have been anywhere near what you're imagining, because I know that the moment those missiles were seen they'd have been intercepted why do you think I had a Specula class and the Northwind there? Could it be because I knew my niece was a first time commander in chief with no prior experience of anything like it?" she glanced at Michelle "No win scenario's?"
"We've talked about them." Michelle said
"Good." Serenity said giggling slightly before handing Asuna what looked like a diary "My great grandfather's diary from the late great war years of his reign... in short more homework." she sighed "I'm the world's biggest critic of your mother but I had her back when push came to shove and I'll have yours the same, but don't expect me to pull punches I'll tell you straight up what I think whether it be good or bad. "

"Now normally I'd say homework time and there's a lovely table over there in the fresh air for it." Michelle said she gently pushed Asuna past Serenity toward Gemma "But first I think there's someone you need to talk to."

"Very well," Alex said as he produced his phone, "let's see where this leads then."

"Thank you, and I'm quite fond of ruses," Kado replied, "Hadley was quite fond of the art of the ruse after all, her tendencies therein are something I perhaps inherited from her. What is it you have in mind?"

Kyōko sighed, "Oh what an interesting story that is. I'm sure you remember the period of time I had to navigate voices within Rishiri that wished for a dramatic change to the status-quo between the Imperial Overseas Dependency and Rishiri, yes? One would not be entirely false if they believed I did not have some sympathies with those behind that cause, and the writings of a, to this date, "unidentified blogger" who put forward some ideas which would cause quite a stir between Rokkenjima, Seaforth and most likely East Moreland if they were found to be penned by an Anselmo are likely what he has in his arsenal. It was, quite simply, more prudent to preserve peace and tranquility over spending great time and energy in disproving him that led to my decision to comply. Plus, after my time in Pyrettania, I'm not entirely cut out for that scene and, with elections for the First Minister coming in the approaching months, I kind of miss my old office and thought a return there might be nice."

"Of course she did," Asuna said before pivoting from happy recollections to self reflection. "I imagine he'd be quite disappointed in me to date, and I'd argue I've given him few reasons not to be, well," she said as she ate, "I don't quite know where to go from there."

"So you're all like Lucinda?" she would ask, "I can understand that," she continued. "Rosari teachings say an Empress is born with two souls attached to her: her love and her companion. While I understand some cultures might combine the two the Rosari recognize that the love of the Empress might be unable or incapable of doing all that is required to keep her, and the Empire, safe; so she has her companion to do those things that her love is unable/incapable of doing and where certain actions would soil her own hands her companion may undertake them and be forgiven when her soul is weighed in the afterlife. There's things unforgivable on this plane that are forgivable solely by Ma'lia for that soul."

"I'll try," Asuna said, "Perhaps I expected it as it was for my mother, one of my best friends perhaps, someone there from an early age, I had ideas in mind as to who it would be so this is unexpected for me maybe?"

"It was never my intention to fire missiles, just to show the capacity was there," Asuna replied. "I felt that if they knew certain death was awaiting them if they continued to do such unspeakable things, they would stop, and shortly thereafter they surrendered; it's like if Thomas and I broke up and he refused to remove his belongings from the Imperial Palace. I threaten to burn them, adding a sense of urgency to the equation which prompts him to act accordingly; I would not, of course, burn his possessions but he doesn't know that, so I influenced his actions in this hypothetical without any actual harm to anyone, yes? I think the same applies to my surfacing of those submarines; I had the capacity, but would I have pulled the trigger, ultimately? I knew the answer, they nor anyone else did, thus it introduced a wild card to things."

"Although this is a welcome respite from homework," she said as she was nudged toward Gemma. "Hopefully I didn't disappoint you too much," she paused, "I guess in the moment I didn't quite know what to do and acted on impulses, for what it's worth, I'm sorry. Do you think you could forgive me?" she asked as she extended her hand toward her.

The Achkaerinese embassy was where the cloned drive of data from Rowe's unit had been taken, it was here that Amy Taylor (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg2125#msg2125) a poacher turned gamekeeper in the cyber world so to speak was in the process of attempting to decrypt what data they had. "Someone's not messing around." she said as she typed command after command "Multiple layers of encryption, some of this is more secure than others. I don't even know the file names."
"So we have no idea what's on here which means we have to take it as it comes?" Joe asked
"Pretty much." Amy said "And so far I've only got two things, take a look." she brought the first up on her computer screen.
"That looks like a medical consent form for a surgical procedure in January 2007." Robyn said "Look at the patient name."
"Beatrice Anselmo." Joe said "Must have been a routine thing, but why's it here?"
"I don't know yet." Amy said "This is like doing a jigsaw without knowing the final image or shape of the pieces."
"Where did she have it done?" Joe asked
"2007 it's probably the medical wing of Pyrena." Robyn said "Still needs the consent form for obvious reasons though."
"So what's the other thing?" Joe said
"This." Amy said bringing up what looked like a photograph of a young Evanthe "It's off a Gowu newspaper website, it's got the date 10th January 2001 on it."
"Well that's no mystery, that's the Constellation Ball date." Robyn said "But again why's that important?"
"There may be more pieces of the puzzle I can get at with time but I think we need to ask people questions." Amy said

At the Imperial Palace the task of asking those questions had fallen to Kayleigh, well via a phone call anyway, stepping out of the Palace while Alex was still on the phone she approached Evanthe first and handed her a copy of the photograph "This just got pulled off of something we think's associated with this whole mess." she said "I don't know what the heck it means but if you do then it's quite likely important." she left that with Evanthe before approaching Alex as he finished the phone call "Your Highness can I ask you about this?" she handed Alex a copy of the consent form "It's a medical consent form for surgery you signed as your wife's next of kin. Can you tell me who did it and what the procedure was?"

Rion half smiled "Your Empress's press release may have been strongly ill advised because it puts everyone involved in this conspiracy on notice and gives up the element of surprise but it does mean there is now an expectation of action. She didn't name names but she's made it clear what's going on, we don't have any evidence against Rowe, we don't have any evidence against Stanley and we've not really got anything on Groves, ignore Stanley and Rowe" she was writing down a list of names including Groves, Rika Miyano, Ito Tomatsu and Yuriko Faust as well as several other names of other people. "Arrest them on suspicion, bring them in for questioning whatever works for you. They're mostly high profile enough that it may put our conspirators at ease, they may think they've got cover." she tapped the paper "Once they're detained split them up, put them in different places, make sure you have the only list of who is where. If this Rika Mayano is two's company three's a crowd in terms of Stanley then he may enlist Seagull to find out where she is. If there's one thing to remember about criminal enterprises's it's that you should never let emotion cloud your judgement, she may be his weak point and that may be what we need to flush Seagull out. Meanwhile having Groves on the list as well as other Centre Party figures such as Faust makes it look like we're looking at this as a remnant of Ofdensen and not what it actually is. The ones you trust, can be informed and will hopefully play along, when all's said and done those not involved can be released without charge while those party to anything criminal can face justice and the whole thing just looks like the criminal justice process."

Gemma didn't take Asuna's hand, she grabbed her wrist and pulled the Rokkenjiman Empress into a hug "Shut up." Gemma whispered "Doesn't do me any good to hold grudges, my job is to know you and as my soul is bound to yours I believe that logically I know what you mean. Apology accepted." she gave Asuna a kiss on the forehead, just as she'd done almost a year earlier after rescuing her, looking at Serenity she smiled "Any objection if I take miss Starlight here and spend the night on that island?" she continued giving Asuna a slight tickle.
"You'll need to take food with you over there, plus the sleeping bags and stuff for a fire but yeah feel free." Serenity said "She does however do her homework first."
"Michelle?" Gemma asked
"I agree." Michelle said, it would undoubtedly help Asuna to have a little fun and it would give Michelle herself time to compile her thoughts so far before tackling the next steps with Asuna.

"Give me a couple of hours to get things together while you do your homework." Gemma said

"Beatrice has had some complications, so there were some procedures that had to be done to investigate and mitigate them," Alex sighed. "What does that have to do with things though?"

"Gowu, 2001," Evanthe said with a smile, "I have to wonder why these memories are being brought back to my attention. They were good days," she paused, "though I may be missing out on the relevance to the current set of circumstances. If nothing more, thank you for the fond memories you've provoked."

"I suspect," Kado said with a sigh, "you must understand, Lucinda and Asuna share an almost aunt-niece relationship, so it's likely she's talked with her and let slip things she wouldn't talking to someone such as you or I. I have nothing to prove that, so please don't punish her on the grounds of my words here, but I suspect Asuna wouldn't of made that release without information neither you or I would share with her and, given <0's allegiance to Lucinda, the dots aren't hard to connect. And before I'm berated, <0 operates with her own sanction from the Crown, she's beyond even my reach. I can work within the confines of INIS to achieve our goals, from there who knows what world we're giving birth to."

It was perhaps the quickest Asuna had studied and finished anything and here she was, presenting even her scrap notes with her finished work. "Here you go," she said with a smile, "how do I grade?"

"I have no idea yet." Kayleigh said looking at Alex "But someone had it, so it's important, why? That's the unknown but we'll get there." she knew where she'd be going next in this regard if it was at Pyrena then a call to Hazel was in order.

It was actually hard to tell who was more caught off guard by the photograph - Evanthe or Emerson "You've got to be kidding me." Emerson whispered looking at the picture, "That's the constellation ball in 2001 right? That's that night... But is that really leverage? Talk about confusion."

Rion sighed "We can't have things outside of our control." she said "I'll deal with that, meanwhile you just focus on those arrests and set our trap. We get two pieces off the board and we get control of this situation back, and that is what we need if we're going to tackle Rowe at the end of this." she headed for the door "And for goodness sake let's keep in mind where this is likely to end up." walking out of the door Rion took out her phone she needed to make a call.

Michelle half smiled "I'll tell you tomorrow after I've read it." Michelle said as Gemma came over having spent the last couple of hours packing up the rowboat.

"Shall we?" Gemma asked putting an arm around Asuna and taking her down to the boat, once they were both in Gemma started to row the wooden craft across the lake toward the small island "Peaceful isn't it? A little bit noisier than the last place I went to for the calmness, but a fair bit warmer as well." she glanced over her shoulder to check their position "And let's hope we don't ruin your aunts rowboat."

The island itself was small but it was what Astrid and Lisa liked to call their hideout, there was a treehouse, a campfire and a few other things scattered around. "So sleeping bags up in the treehouse and I'll start the fire?" Gemma asked tossing the sleeping bags at Asuna "Hey you got to work if you want to eat kid."

"I trust you lot shall," Alex said.

"Confusion indeed," Evanthe would add. "Looking back though I knew so little of what would come after and, looking back, it's nice to reflect on that moment in time."

"Tranquil, apart from the waves from the bow of the boat, the water is unbroken," Asuna would reply, enjoying the opportunity for some time away from the issues of the world weighing down so pressingly upon her. Taking the sleeping bags up would prove little issue for her, though that might be in part due to her lugging weight around with the Morelanders. Perhaps earlier than expected she popped in from above, simply saying "done" before taking a seat to relax for a moment.

Kayleigh looked from Evanthe to Emerson "Ok what don't I know?" she asked
"My office." Emerson said "Better to do this privately." he led the way back inside the Imperial Palace and once the trio were inside he looked at Kayleigh "That's a picture from the 2001 Constellation Ball in Gowu. In the days of the Federal Republic, the Constellation Ball became how the Anselmo's were introduced to wider society, like a debutante thing."
"Evanthe's being in 2001?" Kayleigh asked
"Yes." Emerson said "We... shall we say had intimate relations that night, the type with consequences."
"I assume based on you not having a daughter that you lost the child?" Kayleigh said, Evanthe nodded "A then sixteen year old having a fling is hardly leverage, but it's a piece of this."

On the island Gemma smiled as she finished lighting the campfire "Ok then." she said before tossing Asuna a wooden training sword "Michelle likely thinks you have a Freya obsession, there's a right way and a wrong way to channel her." she picked up her own wooden training sword "The wrong way is to ask 'what would Freya do?' when you're sat making command decisions, end of the day she's broadly speaking a frontline soldier, she's got experience and training that you don't - she's a soldier not a politician and you don't have the experience to see the domino's falling. The right way is to look at her work ethic. And you might even learn a little about to defend yourself."

"To think they'd be 22 by now," Evanthe said holding back a tear, "I mean my math might be a little rusty but imagine, what now, a 21-23 year old mini-me running around out there," she nudged Emerson almost as an attempt to break the tension of the moment, "the terror she or he would be causing. I bet they'd be remarkable though, I'd have dote upon them so much...I always envied what Beatrice had with Asuna, but it's not too late there. I'd be an amazing mom, at least I hope I would be," she sighed. "All that could have been, you know, it's hard when you think of it like that.

Asuna almost froze, "but, I haven't been trained here yet. Sure mum had a katana she knew how to wield but I wasn't old enough to learn from her. I...I don't know what do do with this," she said unknowing of what would come next.

"Your mother learned from your grandfather." Gemma said smiling "You're going to learn from me." she walked up next to Asuna "The katana is one of the most lethal blades on Mundus, it's light, flexible, a little short compared to other swords but also what we call a one and a half handed blade meaning it can be wielded with two hands but also handled with one. So do as I do." she held her wooden sword out in front of her "Dominant hand here, that allows either your arm or your wrist to control it. When you go with two hands your other hand goes lower down the handle, if you've ever handled a sledgehammer it's a little like that but this is lighter." she waited a moment "Now treat the blade as an extension of your arm and swing from one o'clock down to seven." she showed the swing and was copied by Asuna "Now do it again but step into it. Footwork makes it a whole lot easier, it adds more force it also moves the impact point of the opponent." she moved around behind Asuna "Again." she watched as Asuna continued to swing "Now vary the direction and see what it means for your footwork. You might learn something if you keep this up."

As she did as instructed the movements became more fluid, almost as if muscle memory replaced that which trauma had robbed from her, which brought a grin to her face. "Look at me, doubting myself," she sighed as she allowed the sword in her hands to be a natural extension of her physical and, perhaps, spiritual, self. "I've had many before me in life, countless friends along the way who each imparted something within me that would one day help me and here I am, rediscovering what I've been gifted with in the past and it makes me happy. This," she said as she looked to the sword held by her hand, "I know this, and it's one piece to me being myself again. I got this," she said almost solely to herself, "and now that I'm remembering more of my triumphs than my defeats, are you prepared for the wildcard that's about to come?" she concluded with a confident smirk. "One does not spend time with the Morelanders and not encounter what we hold in our hands," she continued, "I just needed to remember some self worth. Thank you, and brace yourself."

"The bastard is shooting blindly," Kado said as the names of his agents who had not reported in for the day were displayed on his screen. "Twelve names as reported in their trash piece yes, but most having any meaningful connection to Ashinxao either way," he continued, talking aloud as if he were talking to someone. "You play a poor game of chess, my dearest Rowe," he said as he opened a new window on the screen before him, bringing up a chat conversation with <0.

K: Amateur move on Rowe's part, yes?

<0: I mean like if you wanted to broadcast something this is what you would do to accomplish that. Only a handful of those people were even involved in any way with Ashinxao....pay attention to how many of yours have children K

K: He's trying to buy some leverage.

<0: Exactly, these people weren't picked at random, he has something on them, something for them to lose. Dangerous waters ahead, friend.

K: I'll do what must be done to take this asshole down, hello Blue Seagull?

<0: Maybe, don't get ahead of yourself Kado, let me do the homework.

K: Let me know what you find then, yes?

<0: Already on it, bro.

K: A model of efficiency in your craft, you have my reverence.

<0: Goodnight, K, get some sleep and let the din of my keyboard bring me some pleasure, irony I know, but I enjoy it.

<0: Good, you took my advice of sleep, sweet dreams and many dead traitors before you, friend  :)

"For?" Gemma asked twirling her wooden blade "I'm not some overconfident amateur, we train with these day in and day out." she blocked the first swing Asuna sent her way, and then another and then another "Not bad but you're just swinging you're not fighting." she parried another strike "I can read your strikes, you're repeating the same moves over and over again that's just lashing out. Cool head is what you need" she sidestepped, tripping Asuna with her foot and knocking the wooden blade from the Empress's hand with her own "A fight is about more than just the sword, it's about your body, your opponent and your surroundings." she had the point of her wooden blade at Asuna's throat "Food and then bed I think."

At Pyrena Hazel was making her way down into the medical wing of the Castle, it was another disused room with plenty of covers over things but it wasn't anything hidden under the sheets that she was looking for no she was looking for something else and upon seeing the small black dome on the wall she smiled and put her phone to her ear "Found it, now let's hope the digital records are there." she said before heading back up the stairs and going to what had been the security control room once upon a time, entering the access code she had she brought up the archive and input the date - 20th January 2007. To anyone who had been there at the time this would undoubtedly be nostalgic as familiar figures could be seen on the various security footage images from that date, finding the one for the operating theatre she brought it up and took a quick look at it "Ok I've got it, Beatrice Anselmo in the operating theatre at Pyrena. Sending it over to you now."

At Commonwealth House Serenity finished doing the washing up and looked at Michelle "So what do you think?" she asked
"She's got an identity crisis that's for sure, she doesn't know how to be the Empress of Rokkenjima so she's struggling with all the moral issues." Michelle said "She wasn't ready and the responsibility for that lies at her parents door. Beatrice had seven years of learning and experience, taught by your father before she restored Rokkenjima's monarchy, you had nine years active royal service before you were crowned, David's started Rhiannon young, she's got years and she's not a teenager yet. Point is you, David, your dad, Beatrice, Eijiro etc all were prepared for the moment the crown was put on your head, Asuna has had none of that. Think about it how many times did you go to a summit and it was always Beatrice or Evanthe?"
"No future planning." Serenity asked
"More the shadow of giants." Michelle said "Asuna's got a rough deal to be honest, her mother's always going to be this pivotal figure in Rokkenjiman history, restoration of the monarchy, rebuilding a country, huge diplomatic figure. Add in Evanthe's international record and Emerson Ravenswood's record as Viceregent and that's three people she'll never measure up to and that's playing on her subconscious. Normally I'd smash the illusion but we're talking about her mother."

"So what are you going to do?" Serenity asked
"Help her figure out who she is." Michelle said "She's got to break free of the shadow or it's all for naught."

"That's the plan." Gemma said pulling Asuna up "Though tomorrow we may start with teaching you how to kick a soccer ball." it wasn't that much longer before the pair were climbing up into the treehouse for the night.

In Valtheim Elena Walsh (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg9425#msg9425) sat in her flat watching the security footage that Hazel had sent over, she was reading over her notes according to all information so far found and that which was archived this was a routine operation to repair an internal bleed in Beatrice's uterus it wasn't an eyebrow raising complication, what was odd was the consent form turning up on the laptop in Rowe's storage unit. Suddenly she leaned forward "What the..." she said looking at the screen "But that's... nothing to do with an internal bleed. You've got to be kidding me." she picked up her phone and called Rion.

When morning came around Gemma and Asuna rowed back from the island, Serenity was waiting for them "Your dad's here." Serenity said looking at Asuna "And when you're done Michelle wants to assess you and then with a bit of luck we can breathe a whole lot easier." she giggled as the smiling Asuna practically sprinted inside
"Such a daddy's girl." Gemma said following after Asuna.

That, as far as Serenity was concerned, really should have been that Asuna hopefully back on the straight and narrow, focus could shift back to dealing with the threat posed by this conspiracy but then Rion walked through the door.
"You need to see this." Rion said
"Ok." Serenity said following Rion into the kitchen "What is it?"
"My people went through some security footage from Pyrena last night." Rion said handing Serenity an electronic tablet "What do you see?"
"What's the surgery?" Serenity asked
"Emergency repair of a bleed in the uterus." Rion said
"She had a miscarriage so that sounds like dealing with a complication." Serenity said
"I agree but keep watching." Rion said

Then Serenity saw exactly what Elena had seen the previous night "Holy..." she said "Is that?"
"Harvesting Beatrice's eggs?" Rion said "Yes."
"But why?" Serenity asked
"Remember the question we asked a year or so ago about Kyoko?" Rion asked "Why out her?"
"Because if they didn't we would." Serenity said "Charles didn't want to expose Kyoko he was forced to because once Rokkenjima had no heir apparent we pull Kyoko out. And with Cecelia back it would have been substantiated."
"You wanted to know their endgame I think we've found it." Rion said
"You know what you need to do then." Serenity said "Anything else?"
"Every doctor, nurse and orderly involved in that procedure is dead or presumed dead at least according to records." Rion said "I call that suspicious."

Serenity sighed this was going to be a rough day she could feel it "Euphy." she called
"Yes?" Euphy asked coming into the kitchen
"We need to go to Pyrena." Serenity said "Val can watch the kids."
"Are you taking Asuna and her dad?" Rion asked, Serenity's eyes went to where Michelle was making her morning cup of coffee
"If I drop the metaphorical bombshell on Asuna right now how's she going to react?" Serenity asked
"She's tough, despite her own self doubts, give her a demon she may run a mile, give her something to look forward to and she can take it." Michelle said
"How bad is it?" Euphy asked
"When it comes to bad it's not her I'm worried about." Serenity said "But I can't ignore that this impacts her, so she's got to be told."

"Do I tell Kado?" Rion asked
"You tell him to get himself to Pyrena and you don't promise him dinner." Serenity said
"I do not flirt with Kado how many times?" Rion said
"For you intellectual debate is flirting." Michelle said

"Why hello there...oof," Alex said as she nearly tackled him to the ground with her running hug. "I'm happy to see you too," he continued as he set her feet-down on the ground, "I'm not going to pretend the last few years haven't been difficult for all of us, but I promise you that's all behind us," Asuna would tilt her head inquisitively. "I've made the arrangements and settled remaining affairs elsewhere and while I won't be joining you in the Imperial Palace I'll be home again. Naturally I have to be proud of my girl in finding herself a home which almost, and I say almost because mum would smack me over the head if I dared belittle her beloved Pyrena, but it almost outdoes it." "But the Palace doesn't have a TARDIS in the basement," she said with a scowl, prompting a chuckle from Alex. "I imagine, if you're not too grown up for a sleepover, you'd be welcome any time, I'll need the best at the helm after all," he said with a wink.

"Thank you for recognizing that," she said smugly. "I see you're doing well then, what, with that echo of your mum's bluster in your voice. I'm not going to ask you to share everything on what happened now, you can talk to me on your own terms and at your own pace, but know I'm always going to be here for you and I'm not leaving your side, alright?" he said which was replied in a nod. "Well then, I think we need to see that things are tied up here and, hopefully, see you home soon. Although I must add," he paused as he looked at a note, "who is this Thomas I've read up on? I might not be Emperor anymore but I still have my contacts and if he ever were to break your heart, well..." "You will not calling Lucinda, he's one of the good guys, like you are," she said as she hugged him again. "He better be," Alex said resting his chin on her head, "I'm sorry we haven't had moments like this for so long, we haven't been a family but I think the storm is behind us now, and we survived it. I'm going to make my way over to Pyrena, I've a second surprise to deliver. I love you, Asu," he continued as he kissed her forehead, "we'll never be apart again, I promise."

"Good, because if you break it I'm taking the TARDIS and installing it in the Palace. I'm Empress now," she said with a grin, "I have people who can make that happen, you know." "Duly noted, your Majesty," he said with a bow, "I wouldn't want to earn the ire of the Empress, after all. That aside," he said as he opened his suitcase, "this picture book helped me to keep my sanity while I was away. Every important moment, every moment your mum and I thought was important, is captured within the pictures here. I think there's even a shard of that clay flag you made for your first crush somewhere in there, I'll be sure to show it to Thomas when I get to meet him." While he had the chance to complete that sentence it was not before Asuna's foot made contact with his shin, "Duly noted, don't do that," he chuckled as he tousled her hair. "Mum and I will see you soon."

"Well then, are we here to compare notes and findings?" Kado would ask upon his arrival to Pyrena. "I would say that the cage has certainly been rattled at Imperial High Command with the activities I've been taking note of as of late. Of course, afterwards, I know of the finest Sushi-ya establishment in Pyrettania which would be the perfect place to align our respective investigations to date. And while my, shall we call them, guests haven't been the most forthcoming by way of mouth, I'd say their extracurricular activities have spoken where the cat has caught their tongue. Full Spectrum has been a boon to my investigation, what, even if they were wise enough not to share certain details digitally the locations of certain people's cell phones in the same place at times one would not expect them to be together...I digress though, we've certainly much to discuss."

It was harder to tell who was more surprised to see the near mass arrival at Pyrena, Beatrice or Lucinda, about ten minutes and one raid on the drinks cellar later they were sat around in one of the larger reception rooms. "This isn't an update on the whole matter so to speak." Rion said from where she sat next to Kado "Because we're still just scratching beneath the surface in that respect, we do think we know what the endgame of these conspirators is. And before you ask what it is, we're going to tell you because of what it concerns but let me clear we're telling you because it concerns you, we're not going to tell you specifics of what action we're going to take in response." she looked at Serenity and nodded

"One part of this investigation turned up a cache of various documents, photographs and so on. We're still ploughing through them but one of them was this." Serenity said putting the medical consent form on a table in front of Beatrice "That dates from the 20th of January 2007, it concerns the complication you had after your miscarriage, we presume the emergency nature of the surgery is why Alex signed the form. Nothing unusual in that respect, the oddity is that it was in this document cache so it was investigated further and in the security archives for Pyrena we found the footage of the operation." Serenity paused to allow Rion time to put an electronic tablet in front of Beatrice so she could watch the relevant part of it. "Everything prior to this part was exactly what would be expected of an internal bleed repair, however and there's no easy way of saying this that's not all they did, after they repaired the bleed the medical team harvested some of your eggs."

"It gets worse I'm afraid" Rion said "Everyone involved in carrying out that surgery is now dead, I call that a little suspicious. As for why this was done, well this is their endgame." she took a breath "Just over a year ago we were all operating on the assumption that what we called the Ofdensen plot worked on the premise of discredit and invalidate each Anselmo to roll back the clock twenty years to a Rokkenjiman Republic, however with what we now know I think different. If you're going to play puppeteer in Rokkenjima then the easiest way is to have an Empress who is easily influenced and not sure what they're doing, now despite what I would call several high profile howlers from the various Rokkenjiman Empresses in the room none of you were or are easily led, you know your own minds. That harvesting of your eggs carries an implication, it means there's the possibility of another Anselmo out there, a sibling for Asuna but more significantly someone who would be next in line to the throne who would also be a blank page."

"It takes a little to sink in." Serenity said "But it makes sense, if you want to run an Empire from behind the scenes you need someone easily controlled on the throne, among other things but that's the main one."
"I won't ask the question that I would like to, because it's immaterial and that's something for behind closed doors." Rion said "As for what we do next, if there is another Anselmo out there my people will find them meanwhile Kado and his people are, mainly because of one ill advised press release, going to end up in a game of tit for tat that's going to look like it belongs on the school playground. These are the things we need to do, just because we think we know where they want to go doesn't mean we know how they plan to get there and the longer Kado can keep them in knots the more time I have to dig and then when we have what we need we trap them."

With that Rion stood up and left the room with Kado not far behind once they were out into the gardens she let out a huge sigh of relief and ran her hands through her hair, now for what she'd thought of that she couldn't say in front of Asuna "Kyoko's existence." she said looking at Kado "It was a secret with a very small circle, I know who all the involved Rokkenjimans were and I know none of them now work for the INIS. They had to put Kyoko on the board so we couldn't." she smiled a little "Find the INIS agent who discovered that Lucretia Marino is Kyoko Anselmo and you'll find Seagull." she sighed again "And you still owe me dinner."

Beatrice remained silent for the most part before looking aside, "is there any manner in which I have not been violated? In the past year I've learned that I was drugged and now I'm informed that these deranged bastards harvested my eggs and made themselves some science tube Empress? They're only fortunate," she paused, "that I am not Empress today and that Lucinda doesn't have her agents at her back because I would see every ounce of justice, and yes vengeance, extracted from them before their bodies laid before my feet. Forgive me," she sighed, "I know there is much at play here, but I can't help but to take all of this in personally all the same. We can't change the past but," she said looking to Asuna, "we can ensure that this ends, before they subject my beautiful girl to the same cruelties I was subjected to." Alex, meanwhile, walked to the window, opening it and taking in the air around Pyrettania before turning back to the assembly before him.

"It sickens me to know what you've been subjected to and I look back at the moment I signed those papers and feel a weight upon me, hearing this how could I not? But," he paused, "if there is another Anselmo out there, I know that you know it's not their fault, we can't change the past but do you think you could love and accept them, just as you do our Asu and Lucius, and think how this will shatter their understanding of every aspect of their life." "You already know the answer to that," Beatrice said as she took Alex's hand in her own, "the real question is could you accept them, they wouldn't be your chil..." "And stop right there," Alex said as he kissed her fingers, "I love what you love, and who is family to you is family to me, if there is another Anselmo out there they deserve to inherit...my sarcasm, at the very least" he said in an attempt to lighten the mood, to which Beatrice stomped on his toes lightly. "It'll be me giving you lessons tonight, in decorum and what [ii]not[/i] to say when others are present, understood?" she said resting her head against him, "you really do ground me though, you know?" "Do those lessons involve....I'll end there as Asu is present," he sighed, as Asuna rolled her eyes. "You two, keep it to the bedroom for once?"

"And let's not lose sight,  if there is another Anselmo I have a sibling to look after," Asuna would add, "and if they are out there, they're perhaps more vulnerable than any of us here in this moment. Rion, please, the moment you find them, I imagine they'll be my sister given the Constitution of the time favouring the female line of our family, make sure she's protected, and I'd like to meet her if she is out there."

With a few taps on his phone screen out of the way Kado nodded, "Duly noted and acted upon. I have already reserved a table at Sushi Pyrettania, it's in the heart of the cultural district and boasts some of the best sushi Rokkenjima has to offer, and the chef on duty has a favour to repay given my involvement in a situation he faced 15 years ago so even if it's not on the menu, he'll prepare whatever we should request. I swear he makes the best Uramaki throughout the whole of Rokkenjima or our neighbours, and have to recommend you sample it at the very least. It is," he paused to give a chef's kiss to the air, "simply exquisite, in form and execution. Why, my mouth waters just thinking of it."

Hospitals weren't Serenity's favourite place, she'd had a couple of operations, had a few visits with the girls and of course now Euphy was on a hospital bed waiting for treatment for a parasitic liver infection, the treatment in question would be a live liver transplant, which was why members of the Anselmo family had been contacted and DNA tests were being done. It was one of the weirder family settings - Astrid and Lisa were sat doing their homework on the bed using the trolley table as a surface while Serenity sat in a chair talking with Euphy. Then Joe Naylor (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg220#msg220), one of the Royal Medical Team, put his head around the door "Your Majesty can we have a word?" he asked
"Sure." Serenity said, she got up and walked out of the room and found that Joe had been joined by Maddy Dale (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg218#msg218) who was the Royal Physician "What's going on?"
"As you know we have security clearance so we get to see certain things, we get to be aware of certain things." Maddy said
"Yes." Serenity said
"Were it not for that we wouldn't raise this with you but we've got the DNA results back for Euphemia's potential donors" Joe said "Any of them would be a suitable and we'd recommend Sophia just based on age and health."
"So what's the issue?" Serenity asked
"I don't think that Sophia and Euphemia are sisters." Joe said "The DNA markers aren't there, there's enough to say they're related but they're not siblings. I ran them past Maddy and she agrees."
"So Sophia is an Anselmo but isn't Euphy's sister?" Serenity said "How hard to find out just who she is?"
"We've got all the DNA samples so we'd have to run a few comparisons." Joe said "Might take a couple of days."
"Do it in house and let's not advertise it." Serenity said

At the Marble Palace the latest meeting on the issue was going on "It just doesn't make sense." Rion said from where she stood looking out of the study window at the gardens.
"What doesn't?" Peter asked
"Any of it." Rion said "Last time around with Charles I'd have bought a power play all day long. But with what we know now? It doesn't add up."
"Reason?" Peter asked
"Lack of motive." Rion said "If we're going to say that Charles Ofdensen, Alex Rowe, Groves, Lucius Stanley, Sumire Abruscato, Lancaster etc were all party to the same conspiracy then where's the motive? Power? They already had it - Charles was Lord High Steward, Rowe was a prominent and highly respected military officer and is now the Grand Marshall he's the most senior rank in the Rokkenjiman military, Lucius Stanley is the Empress's lawyer. They're in positions of power or would be, consider what happens if the Andean Genocide doesn't happen - Henry Cole is still going to retire at some point so Rowe still gets to be Grand Marshall, Lucius Stanley retains position, Ofdensen is probably still Lord High Steward, Evanthe's viceregent, Asuna's Crown Princess, Beatrice is Empress and most critically she's still likely doped up to the eyeballs the perfect puppet, that's the position you want if you're these conspirators so why throw it away?"

"You mean why sign the Mentorship?" Peter asked
"Yeah." Rion said "Too much of a risk, why expose yourselves like that? Because you're either going down or you're putting Beatrice down either way you're losing the position of power."
"Have you got an answer?" Peter asked
"The only answer that makes sense is that all of them are expendable pieces in someone elses game." Rion said "Kado and I had this figured at four individuals I think there's a fifth, I think there's someone pulling all the strings and we don't know who that is, but we do have a good bet on the endgame - put this blank canvas, this sibling, on the Rokkenjiman throne and presumably influence them."
"Where are we on finding them?" Nettie asked
"We haven't pulled anything off of the hard drive about it but we may not need to." Rion said "If we've only been looking at pieces then each piece has a purpose..."
"Sumire Abruscato." Sakura said "Surrogacy?"
"You don't exactly let this Anselmo's existence be known outside a tight circle." Rion said
"And it's going to be military doctors loyal to Rowe or it's going to be Anausa loyal to Charles." Peter said "There's not going to be a record of Sumire giving birth anywhere."
"No there isn't." Rion said "But there will be a birth certificate for whoever that child is."
"Ok I'll have a word with the relevant authorities and see what we get from Sumire if anything." Peter said "Rion you stay the hell on preparing for the next step here because if there's an Anselmo sibling out there who's a piece in this puzzle then you know that means probably former Anausa in play."
"I know." Rion said

"Ok now tell me about this legal stuff." Peter said
"If Lucius Stanley wasn't already involved in this I'd be questioning whether he ever went to law school." Kumiko Arkwright, the Chief of Staff, said "It's pressure application."
"Yes it is." Adam Sheppard said "Alex Rowe is a soldier, he knows how to recognise stress and he knows how ill prepared Asuna was for the throne, so he piles on the pressure because he knows that if he can make her snap then he invalidates her, he discredits her and she's no longer Empress and that opens the path to the mystery sibling."
"It's more than that, if the perjury thing ever got to appeal the first question Beatrice gets asked is did she have a phone conversation with Barren?" Nettie said "She answers yes then it's not perjury but then you have the Morelanders likely wanting a word or two about it they might even take a shot at extradition. And that's before we question the perceived influence Barren could have over Asuna, it's non existent in reality but there's enough to start the rumours."

"And the thing with Kado?" Peter asked
"Asuna's ill advised press release didn't name names but put people on notice so a reaction had to happen that's why the INIS arrested people. There was always going to be blowback which is the SIS arresting twelve INIS agents, now I'm hoping that Kado actually showed the SCJ evidence of the twelve agents whereabouts that proves they were nowhere near the scene of the crime on the night in question because otherwise it looks a whole lot more shady." Rion said "It allows Rowe to play the victim and he's playing a blinder."
"So what's his next move?" Peter asked
"He needs to pick a fight and I think he's already picked it." Rion said
"Kusan right?" Adam said, Rion nodded
"Complicity where it's not proven." Nettie said "Would have been enough ten years ago."
"That may be true but I don't think Kusan is party to this." Rion said "It doesn't add, they're the fall guy and I think Rowe and these other conspirators need to cover something up."
"You know what I'm going to say." Peter said
"I'm on the next flight down there." Rion said
"What's his next move now the evidence has failed to convince?" Peter asked
"If it's a fight with Kusan he wants he'll find a way to force one or at least try to force one." Rion said "I've got an idea of what I think the play is and I'll liaise with the MDI to counter it."
"Ok you work on stopping their end run, take their legs out if needed." Peter said

"You've got to be kidding me," Kado said to Lucinda after he read the pages he had set upon his desk. "I've sat before me orders signed by the Saisei Empress like this one," he said as he handed it back to her, "which declares that the First Empire must enact every possible energy against the sun, including via nuclear weapons deployed in space to moving units which do not, and have never, even existed. Yet this one, Imperial Order 99011372, did you see it?" he asked, to which Lucinda shook her head. "Allow me to read you the text then," he continued:

"With immediate effect I order Rokkenjiman commanders operating in Nueva Ardia to seize full control of Toshikawan units operating within the borders of Nueva Ardia to effect a swift and determined end to the hostilities being committed henceforth and to see that reports of atrocities being committed in the name of Toshikawa to be investigated and duly acted upon at the earliest moment possible."

"The only issue is," Kado continued, "that order never left the confines of Imperial High Command; there is no record of Imperial Order 99011372 outside of the information <0 has scrapped from shared resources between the various services of the Imperial Rokkenjiman Armed Forces. I'm certain this was written by someone in IHC to placate the Empress at the time, but it shows that, on some capacity at least, there was a flicker within her and she felt that she had brought an end to the actions of Toshikawa, incapacitated as she was even. It's impressive that her constitution was in tact, but then, why proceed to ultimately burn, so to say, the Empress? The pieces were in place, the players were comfortable in their positions, success was just outside their reach. Why introduce this unnecessary variable into the equation?"

"Beatrice is an immovable rock, her words prior to this event were always backed with actions so she was a faithful partner until the bastard poisoned her," Lucinda said without hesitation, "and Asuna is a bleeding heart for all who feel pain and sorrow, they know that and know that she will feel all that those who have lost feel. They required a clean board, a clear slate, so first you remove Beatrice, try to mold Asuna and, failing that, you clear the board and start from scratch. If you would allow it I could go to his office in this moment and see that his treason ends here, this night, I'll make it look as though he died of natural cause..." "And then we make a martyr out of him for those subscribed to his cause, I'm sorry but, no," Kado sighed. "I know how you feel for Saisei, but that is not the path that serves her interests best."

"Then what is?" Lucinda asked pointedly. "We do this by the book," Kado responded. "I will be transmitting your findings to our foreign friends and we'll move forward from there, and I will promise you that anyone connected to this horrible business is held accountable to the highest standard. What we won't be doing is killing them in black sites, or giving their ardent adherents a motive to further their plots further. I've a call to make," he said as he dismissed Lucinda with a motion of his hand, sharing what she had brought before him with the Achkaerinese.

The corridors of Coral Rift prison were nothing new to Gary Newton (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg4108#msg4108) though this was perhaps the most unusual visit he'd ever made to the facility, making his way to the visiting room she sat down and waited a few moments before a guard opened the door and brought in Sumire Abruscato, Rokkenjiman nobility, former Imperial Councillor, former Mentor of Toshikawa and now if the theories were right just another sacrificed piece in whatever game was being played. "Ms Abruscato." Gary said slowly "Have a seat."
"Lieutenant" Sumire said "Why does my counsel want to see me?"
"I'm authorized to offer you a deal." Gary said, it had been a hell of a conversation to have with Lt Foster but the situation being what it was she had agreed to it, "We need information about something we believe you know about."
"And in exchange?" Sumire asked
"You get moved to a lower risk prison, somewhere with more privileges." Gary said "And that's just for starters." he put a piece of paper in front of Sumire "All spelled out for you."
"What do you want to know?" Sumire asked

"On the 20th of January 2007, Beatrice Anselmo underwent a medical procedure at Pyrena to repair an internal bleed in her uterus resulting from a recent miscarriage." Gary said "Footage of that surgery shows that the doctors involved not only repaired the bleed but without good reason harvested Beatrice's eggs. The implication of that is the same as was the case fifteen years earlier, to create a 'break glass in case of emergency' heir. But while in the case of Kyoko it was done with noble intentions, not so in this instance this time it was with malicious intent. I think this is another thing chalked up to the group of conspirators you're part of." he took a moment to look straight at her "Are you the birth mother to this other Anselmo? Yes or no."
"Yes." Sumire said after a moment
"Give me a name." Gary said
"Kikyo Hase, she was born on the Abruscato estate, I was 'ill' for a few months of 2007, two Anausa agents that Charles had in his pocket took her and moved to Jenka -Jenkinson." Sumire said "The agents pose as her parents and I assume have done their job of grooming her for the throne."
"Why?" Gary asked
"To correct a near sixty year old wrong." Sumire said "At least that's what Charles told me."
"What wrong?" Gary asked
"I never heard the full story." Sumire said "Look I'm not a vindictive person, and despite what people may think I never acted with ill intent as an Imperial Councillor or as Beatrice's friend, that was all genuine not duplicitous, my job was done the moment the birth happened. You can't offer me absolution I know that but I'll point you to what you don't know." she took a breath "The child of Tairo."
"Thank you." Gary said "I want all that in a statement."

The study at the Marble Palace was a little fuller than usual as the latest meeting on this took place Serenity was present, with every intention of running back to the hospital once it was over, around the room the various advisors and officers sat and stood and then Gary walked in.
"Please tell me you've got a name Lieutenant." Serenity said
"I have Kikyo Hase." Gary said "Had a quick bit of research done she attends Vicheshire School in Jenka-Jenkinson, sixteen years old."
"She's also the girl who just got invited along with her class to the Youth Diet in Rokkenjima." Nettie said
"Rowe's moving his pieces." Serenity said
"There was something else." Gary said "Sumire says this is about a sixty year old wrong and pointed us at the child of Tairo whatever that means."
"It's not a what it's a who." Peter said
"You know what it means?" Nettie asked

"Yes." Peter said going over to a whiteboard that sat in the room and drawing up the Anselmo family tree "This is what we usually think of, work it backwards you have Asuna, Lucius and Kikyo going up to Beatrice married to Alex and Kyoko as a sibling and then up again to Cecelia and Kichiro and of course biologically myself. That's the main branch, then if we do Euphy's branch you have her and you go up to her parents Usagi and Aaron, then on Evanthe's side you have Evanthe and you go up to her parents Mieko and Madara."
"Do we know where Sophia fits in to this yet?" Serenity asked
"Yes we do." Maddy said "Based on DNA comparison and further testing we believe Sophia is Evanthe's daughter."
"Wow." Serenity said "She was born in late 2001... the picture."
"Yep." Peter said putting Sophia's name on the tree "And we know that Emerson's the father because there's no way in heck you forget a younger Emerson Ravenswood spending the night of the Constellation Ball in Wyvern Castle and then sharing looks with Evanthe over breakfast."
"No one tells them yet." Nettie said
"Exactly now that's what we normally think about when we go at the Anselmo family tree." Peter said "But Cecelia, Usagi and Mieko are sisters if you go back a further generation you get the then exiled Empress Kikyou." he took a breath as he drew the line and put that name up. "Now watch what happens when I put the birth years up for those three sisters." he put 1970 next to Usagi, 1966 next to Cecelia and 1964 next to Mieko.

"Hang on a minute that would mean..." Nettie said
"That by convention Mieko not Cecelia should have taken the crown?" Peter asked "Yes."
"Why didn't she?" Nettie said
"Because it was decided otherwise, but that's only half the story." Peter said "Anyone want to ask the other obvious question?"
"Madara." Sakura said "Is a Rokkenjiman name."
"Yes, but Evanthe isn't entirely of Rokkenjiman heritage." Peter said
"I get the implication but what's that got to do with the child of Tairo?" Serenity asked
"I assume Alex has had time to look that up by now." Peter said looking at where Alexandria Savage (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg211#msg211) otherwise known as Alex was sitting looking at her tablet.

"Mieko Anselmo is the child of Tairo" Alex said "Damn this is ancient, in 1964 Kikyou Anselmo visited what was then called Daito, on the return trip her yacht was boarded by what were at the time believed to be pirates but were later discovered to be Toshikawan militia I'll give you one guess which clan."
"Nekhaga." Serenity said
"Bingo." Alex said "Anyway the Toshikawan's subdued the crew and took the yacht and Kikyou to the nearest Rokkenjiman military port which at the time was Tairo. What the Toshikawan's didn't know was that Naoko Ryoma the companion soul to Kikyou got off a distress call to Autumn Wood Fort in Gowu, the ship was tracked to Tairo and a Justicar team sent in with Achkaerin Special Forces in support... The Justicars bribed the port commander to release Kikyou but this was four days later and in that time..."
"Kikyou had given birth to Mieko." Peter said "Officially Kikyou gave birth on the return trip, the Federal Republic were knee deep in Kusan at the time they weren't going to risk a war with us."
"Why did the Toshikawan's even do that?" Sakura asked
"We didn't know that for another thirty years." Esme said "The 1960's were the very beginning of what would eventually become the Bute movement, they were hoping that delivering Kikyou to the Federal Republic would get the Republic's support in terms of Gowu, the Bute element viewing that as Toshikawan soil which of course it isn't. That all came out at the Cherry-Lotus negotiations."

"I get it." Serenity said "Mieko is born on Rokkenjiman soil, she's pure blood, she's the blessed of Islnya according to the standard Yuna would set. By all accounts she should have been next on the throne so what happened?"
"The implication around Evanthe happened." Peter said "And it couldn't have happened at a worse time."
"Around the time that Mieko became pregnant in 1984 Kikyou fell quite seriously ill, Mieko was still traumatised from her ordeal so Cecelia was making the decisions, just after Evanthe was born Kikyou died but Mieko was still traumatised it wasn't clear if she'd ever recover so the Grand Maester made a decision and Cecelia was proclaimed as the monarch."
"And over time all that trauma, all that hatred turned to resentment." Nettie said "But she died in 2004."
"And we thought Cecelia died in 1997." Serenity said
"The question is where's she been?" Peter said
"That doesn't matter." Serenity said "But we can probably guess where she'll turn up."
"Kusan." Alex said "Rowe's angling for a fight, he's pushing hard for it and that's the trap. Kusan's innocent and when that gets discovered Asuna's either going to break if she hasn't already or she'll be forced out."
"Exactly." Serenity said "Push the button repeatedly, push it hard enough and it doesn't matter that the international community is saying 'no proof of complicity' because payback is expected and Rokkenjima will eventually demand it."
"And the Diet can vote for it." Nettie said "It would basically be a motion calling for action but Asuna can't ignore it she'd be hugely unpopular if she did. It only needs a fabricated smoking gun."

"I just had a rather disturbing thought." Peter said looking out of the study window "What if the reason Rowe knows Kusan is innocent is because he is guilty?"
"As in he orchestrated the Pyrettania..." Esme said "If that's true..."
"How?" Sakura asked
"There's one other plant." Serenity said "Nemphis."
"But opportunity?" Mark Sharpe the national security advisor said
"There is one." Peter said "Sobernakht's little uprising, Achkaerinese forces fought a running battle in and around the Nemphis compound, they could have stolen it then and delivered it. That could have been the whole point of the exercise."
"But when would they have made contact to set that up?" Nettie asked "We'd have known we were in country."
"In the middle of the Clysperi civil war Rokkenjima offered aid." Mark said "Which we declined because the situation was in hand but it's not beyond the realms they put people in anyway."
"Rowe's not the type to leave things to chance." Nettie said

"No he's not." Serenity said with a hint of anger in her voice before walking over to the whiteboard "Me and Euphy recently started reading the Harry Potter books to the girls in the Chamber of Secrets just before Harry fights the Basilisk there's a moment where the form of Riddle uses a wand and writes his name." she wrote TOM MARVOLO RIDDLE on the whiteboard "Which is an anagram of..." she wrote I AM LORD VOLDERMORT underneath the name
"So?" Sakura asked
"So what happens to this?" Serenity asked she wrote RAMOSE on the whiteboard "If you flip the M and do the same thing you get..." she wrote A S ROWE underneath Ramose "A.S Rowe, Alex Sebastian Rowe."
"Vanity." Nettie said "Could it be that simple?"
"It makes sense Ramose hasn't been heard from in a long time, no one's ever seen him, no one's ever met him, the guy may not look like Rowe but one rogue Anausa for appearance purposes and Rowe as the voice?" Mark asked
"Who does this guy think he is Palpatine?" Kumiko asked
"Apparently." Serenity said "But if that is true then you all know what it means he is responsible for, and if it is true then we will have him for it."

"So how do we stop him?" Alex asked "Because he's making his move."
"We've got just a few days." Serenity said "Alex you bring Rion up to speed, Kikyo is her ball neither Rowe nor any of his people get to her first, that plane does not fly direct to Pyrettania."
"Understood." Alex said
"Sakura you're going to Clysperis." Serenity said "We'll get some soldiers to provide an escort, go and see Sobernakht, cut him a deal and see what he gives you."
"Ok." Sakura said
"I'll go and see Emerson and Evanthe." Peter said "It should be me who tells them, Mieko was distant and cold when Evanthe was growing up and I'm the closest thing she's got to a father."
"Agreed." Serenity said "Kumiko you get onto the admiralty I've got a special job for them."
"I'll get them on the line." Kumiko said
"We take away Rowe's leverage, we neutralise the threat, let's get it done." Serenity said

As the room cleared it left only Serenity with Gary and Nell Foster (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg4241#msg4241), after having a drink of water Serenity looked at them "Ok." she said "Let's talk about what Kado found."
"It doesn't change anything." Nell said "All those records were sought in discovery and handed over in 2017 in the run up to trial, it's highly convenient for something new to turn up even more so because it says what it says. And even if the court let it in the date on the order is March 25th 2016, so Beatrice is still liable for the atrocities committed between February 14th and March 25th and she's already got the lightest possible sentence and then some."
"And if we're honest that order isn't the most interesting bit of what Kado found." Gary said "It's all the nonsense orders. Why have Beatrice sign them?"
"Go on." Serenity said
"We think and it's a leap." Nell said "That it's about source material specifically Beatrice's signature. She needs to sign things because she's Empress and the functioning of Government in Rokkenjima required it... but if she's got the awareness to recognise the events around her and react by for example giving that countermand order would you as Charles or Lucius Stanley put that which is critical in front of her?"

Serenity smiled when she saw what Nell was getting at "This can't come from our end and it can't involve your department." Serenity said
"It won't." Gary said "We've set a meeting for Elecktra Hope."
"SHIELD Law?" Serenity asked "I'll get Kyoko there. Let's get Lucius Stanley spinning."

At the Imperial Palace in Rokkenjima Kayleigh walked into Henry Cole's office "Don't ask me why just trust me." she said putting a piece of paper on the table "That needs to be the flight crew for the Imperial Ryusei going to pick up those kids from Jenka-Jenkinson in a few days." the two names were Achkaerinese military. Rowe was making his move so Kayleigh knew that there was no way that Rion was prepared to allow that plane outside of their control.

In Jenka-Jenkinson Maki Hamer (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg652;topicseen#msg652), picked up her phone "Yes Rion?" she asked
"Correct me if I'm wrong but you're half siblings go to Vicheshire School?" Rion asked
"Yes, Sora's in her final year there and Colton's a couple back." Maki said "Why?"
"Kikyo Hase." Rion said "Know anything about her?"
"She just took over as Student Council President, succeeding Sora actually I think Colton's in her form." Maki said
"She just managed to get her social studies people a flight on the Rokkenjiman Imperial Ryusei to attend the Youth Diet in a few days time." Rion said "But here's the complication she's the lost Anselmo, she's Rowe's endgame."
"What do you want me to do?" Maki asked
"Get yourself on that plane." Rion said
"I'm listed as a chaperone with the school so that's not a problem." Maki said
"I'm getting Miku down there as well." Rion said "Kayleigh's liaising with Cole, we're getting control of the plane and going to beat Rowe to the punch. Only risk factor is Kikyo's parents, they're likely rogue Anausa so if they're on the plane watch yourself."
"Understood." Maki said

With the phone calls to Kayleigh and Maki done that only left one problem for Rion to deal with and it was something Kado could do. She wasn't doorstepping his office, no she was doorstepping his apartment. "We need to talk." she said quietly when he opened the door and let her in, once they were in the main room she looked at him "In a few days there's an Imperial Ryusei bringing a group of children over from Jenka-Jenkinson for the Youth Diet. On the day of that flight I need you to find a way or reason to shut down Arovia Air Traffic Control, don't ask me for details just know this is the future of Rokkenjima right here right now. You cannot risk using the INIS, because we cannot flag this, but if you can do that then it will mean that Brianna Azurewind ATC in Gowu takes over Arovia's remit during the outage and that is what we need to happen. Are you up for it?"

Cole took a glance at the names, nodded, and picked up the phone aside him. "Forrester, Cole here. We'll need to make a couple of adjustments to the flight crew for the upcoming Ryūsei flight due to pick up the Jenka-Jenkinson crew. Please see that these two," he said texting her the names, "relieve whoever is slated for the assignment; this falls under your purview so take advantage of that. And yes, next time you're in Pyrettania we'll visit that cafe you've gathered an affinity for. Much catching up to do, out," he said as he hung up the phone.

"A little adjustment we had following the incident with the Fusanese," Cole continued, "responsibilities for the maintenance and security of the Imperial Ryūsei falls under Vice Admiral Forrester's portfolio. I've no questions, however I'll trust that you know what you're doing with this." He then poured himself a cup of tea before turning to Kayleigh, "Tea, before you depart?"

As his personal assistant showed Rion to his study Kado lowered his book first, then his glasses just a bit, "And here I thought I would be spending the evening reading 1984," he continued as he placed the book down on the end table. "Thank you, Shiori, if my guest should want a drink?" he said motioning to Rion, raising his eyebrow after hearing what she had asked. "I have someone who can accomplish that and," he said as he initiated a call on his aOS TV, "Hello, ol' Lessy," he said, there was no video coming from the other end, simply a generic female avatar being displayed on the screen. "Ugh, what is it now, you know I was just catching up on the latest episode of Seven Goddesses since I told you specifically this is my day," to which Kado chuckled. "My apologies my dear, but duty calls. A need has arisen for Arovia Air Traffic Control to be shut down, or at least rendered inoperable in a few days. You have any ideas how we might make that happen?"

"Are you kidding me?" <0 would ask, "you're wasting my abilities on that? They're at least a version or two behind on their software updates, the Arovi like to pinch pennies, you could achieve these results by having one of yours walk in and flip a switch," she paused. "Oh none of mine can be anywhere near this, so what you're telling me is you can bring them down?" Kado said with a chuckle. "I'll have to effect a runtime error in their systems, but I can have them knocked out for as long as you need. It'll be easier than chewing bubblegum and kicking ass, because unlike Nada I prefer to do both at the same time." "Please see that it happens, then," Kado replied, to which <0 replied "Give me the precise moment and I'll have their systems down and entirely open to you, if need be."

"And where are my manners, the very reason I called you like this," he said turning to Rion. "Rion, <0, <0, Rion." "A pleasure," <0 replied, "I do a lot of dirty work for Kado, if it involves a Rokkenjiman computer system you should be thanking me instead of him for successful results. He was fortunate to inherit me from Lucinda, but seeing someone in his apartment aside from himself and Shiori, it's good to see my Kado making frien..." and with that Kado ended the call. "She'll get the job done," he said without missing a beat, "she does have her quirks though. With that business out of the way Shiori is preparing her signature Shogayaki, and she always prepares more than the both of us can eat. You're welcome to stay and partake."

"Also," Kado said with a grin, "INIS has leaked the transfer of a high-profile prisoner, one of Rowe's, which should draw the attention of whatever mole they've worked into my organisation. The only thing is, when they stumble upon the transport, it'll be filled either with a full INIS team with at least 12 guns pointed at their heads or an INIS-Justicar team pointing at least 12 guns at their heads. We've highlighted this," he said pulling out a map and pointing to a refueling point, "as the opportune time for them to attack, and then we see which INIS agent runs to inform the conspirators for their pat on the head for a job well done. Interested in making this a collaboration?"

Rion looked at Kado "We're not going to need twelve guns trust me on that." she said "At least not all inside the van at any rate." she took a breath before smiling "Let's go pluck ourselves a Seagull."

SHIELD Law's main office was located in Valtheim, it was part of the so called 'Justice District' which was to say the area of Valtheim where the Supreme Court, Uppsalla Court Building, JAG Headquarters, Ministry of Justice and various law firms were all located. SHIELD Law itself was born out of an international law department from a now defunct firm, it had grown since then but it did retain it's specialism in the international field. The man behind it all was David Wheeler (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg28944#msg28944), he stood in his very professional suit in his very modern and very professional looking office and he wasn't alone Gary Newton and Nell Foster both in their navy uniforms stood to one side while David's friend and colleague Elecktra Hope (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg14468#msg14468) was perched on the edge of David's desk, it amounted to quite a lot of legal brainpower and experience being in the room and that was just what the circumstances demanded. The quartet waited until a secretary came and escorted the person they were waiting for - Princess Kyoko into the room.
"Your Highness thank you for taking the time to make the trip, please have a seat." David said greeting her "I'm David Wheeler I'm the managing partner here at SHIELD Law, this is my colleague Elecktra Hope and I believe you know the two Lieutenants." he waited as Elecktra shook Kyoko's hand "This is a bit of an unusual meeting but I'll let Elecktra explain."

"Normally in our line of work we don't go proposing lawsuits, that belongs firmly in the realm of ambulance chasers not us, but thanks to the Lieutenants we've been made aware of something that we would like you to instruct us to pursue." Elecktra said "In simple terms we have reason to believe that the addendum to the Sakura-Umeko Accord which is to say the Mentorship of Toshikawa was never legally valid and we want to test that before the SCJ."
"However we need a client which is where we're hoping you come in." David said "We can't act on this without a client and from what we're told about present circumstances you are just about the only person who fits the bill." he put a standard letter of engagement in front of Kyoko on the desk.
"What they mean is this if the Addendum is invalid then the Mentorship is invalid." Gary said
"Do understand this may sound too good to be true but it isn't." Nell said "Legally speaking this will set off a chain reaction if it's successful. It also carries a huge political and diplomatic consequence for your niece to deal with. This can right a wrong done to your family but in turn your niece will be left to right a wrong that was therefore done to another party."
"We're advising you to instruct us to do this and slay this vampire already." David said "But it's ultimately up to you."

"Shall we take part ourselves, then?" Kado said with a pause followed by a grin. "By the Goddesses it's been too long since I've done field work, and to look the sons-a-bitches directly in the eyes, my Spidey-senses are tingling here. You down?" he asked with a grin.

Kyoko paused for a moment, considering the ramifications proposed to her, before simply nodding and adding, "Do it. Asuna's tough, she'll face whatever winds are at her face and brush them off to the side without a care in the world. My girl's got this," she continued with a smile.

"You spend too much time in the office." Rion said rolling her eyes as she headed for the door, by comparison she pretty much operated from the field, "Come on I'll hold your hand and maybe let you try out one or two of our toys. I'll drive." as she headed for her car she half smiled Kado didn't know it yet but this was borderline an audition.

At the Royal Valtheim Hospital Serenity was settling into a hospital bed, in the same room as Euphy. Peter was stood there as Serenity handed him the letter that gave him back the authority, temporarily, that he was well versed in wielding. "Don't do anything cool while I'm out of it." Serenity said
"It's not like I'm going to be able to do much in twenty four hours or so is it?" Peter said he looked from Serenity to Euphy and smiled "Now the pair of you focus on yourselves and I'll see you when you're recovering."
"We will." Euphy said

Putting the letter in his inside jacket pocket Peter walked out of the room and down the corridor where his close friend Celine Tyler (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg602#msg602) was waiting for him, stepping into the lift she waited for the doors to close before looking at him "There's one thing we haven't really thought about." she said
"Which is?" Peter asked
"If Mieko is in Kusan then the plan that Rowe is working to involves bringing her back to Rokkenjima." Celine said "So how exactly is that going to be accomplished?"
"I don't know yet." Peter said "But Rowe's pushing hard for military action, and if he doesn't get it for the nuclear material then he's going to do something else isn't he?"
"Yes he is." Celine said "He's going to force hands if he has to."
"Suggestion?" Peter asked
"Be ready to act so your granddaughter doesn't have to." Celine said

As they walked out of the lift Peter's phone rang "Yes Emerson?" he asked answering it
"When she gets out of surgery tell your daughter she's brilliant." Emerson said
"I already tell her that a lot..." Peter said "Why's she brilliant this time?"
"I just read a memo coming to the Imperial Government down here about a case being filed with the SCJ." Emerson said "It may not have her name on it but it's got Serenity's fingerprints all over it."
"Is Lucius Stanley locking himself in his office over it?" Peter asked
"He's not happy that's for sure, he's a little tetchy that it's Kyoko's name on the action." Emerson said
"I'm sure he is." Peter said "Look I need to come down and talk to you, Evanthe and Sophia."
"About?" Emerson asked
"Better to say that in person." Peter said
"Ok." Emerson said then there was a slight pause "Amy just handed me a note, another thing for Serenity when she comes round - she gets to address the youth diet."
"She's smarter than I give her credit for." Peter said "Ok I'll be down there as soon as I can be." he hung up, he'd never planned on this whole being the patriarchal figure in not just his immediate family but his whole family but maybe fate was weaving its thread, maybe this was always where things had been going. He'd never asked why Cecelia had asked him, but he'd known the reason why it could never be spoken and now that reason was intending on coming home to roost. But then again just because time was ticking closer to midnight didn't mean that the clock had to strike twelve.

"Oh please, don't let pretenses fool you," Kado said as he pulled his Howa Type 64 from underneath his desk. "You'll find, on further inspection, that it's taken care for meticulously, and I'd challenge you to find one single fault in its condition," he said with a smile. "I recognize that the Type '89 has succeeded it but," he paused, displaying it with a measure of pride, "if it's not broken, I feel you have little need to fix it. My records at the Imperial Training Grounds, as well as my battle records, are, to some extent at least," he sighed, "public record, but once I have a target in my sights," he chuckled, "they're no longer a threat. Do hold my hand though and let me try something new," he said as he set the Type 64 in a corner, "just don't tell her about it, jealous type after all" he said walking away from the rifle with a chuckle.

Another request for Rowe to meet with her personally, another request denied. "Ugh he's worse than the fanboys I had back in Tytor like," she paused as she made a puking motion, "no thank you, dude." Lucinda chuckled, "Their type wants to be right next to the Empress, you're wise to keep them at arm's length, don't ever doubt yourself no matter what is before you. I learned long ago your gut instinct, is usually the one you should trust," she continued as she sighed, it'd been a while since her and Asuna had palled around in the Residential Wing of Pyrena. "I hope you're not jealous," Asuna said as she motioned Lucinda to look at her MP3 player, "...all of the albums, even the ones you had to download illegally....I'm not mad at that," Lucinda said as she held back a tear. "I have to say," Asuna said with a smile, "I like your emotional side, you've opened up so much in recent times and I have to ask why?" Lucinda stammered, "well I los...well I ha...I adopted an animal and while I love plants, the little guy snagged his way into my heart," she continued as she presented Baxter JR. "Don't smother him as your mother did," she sighed, "they have feelings too and too much of a good thing is bad."

Asuna bent down and presented a banana, "what's this, buddy?" she continued, handing it to him. "All yours, my man," she said to which Lucinda rolled her eyes. "Spoiling him, I see. You've your mother's heart," she sighed, to which Asuna hugged her. "Why are you...what is this?" Lucinda asked. "Luci, you sighed, you, Luci, sighed. You never let your disappointment show before so," Asuna paused and looked away, "I'm happy for you, okay?" to which Lucinda giggled, "it is new, isn't it? I feel, comfortable, with some people like this and while that is new, I do like it. Don't tell anyone though," she said holding a finger to her mouth to which Asuna nodded, "our little secret, whatever keeps you on this path. You don't know how it warms my heart it to see you like this, I'm here for it and I love it," she said with a tighter hug.

"As long as you let me breathe it'll stick around," Lucinda said as she gripped Asuna tighter, "this side'll stick around, I promise."

Rion rolled her eyes as they headed for the car, with a bit of luck they'd have one of their problems off the board before the sun set. Settling into the drivers seat she looked at Kado "So where are we laying this trap?" she asked she was just as keen as he was to finally find out just who was whispering things.

The one thing about Achkaerin was that it viewed the Northern Ocean as it's back yard, in much the same way that East Moreland viewed the Illumic so when a non native decided to ruffle feathers, just as Rokkenjima had seemingly chosen to do, it was always going to get a response. However if there was one thing that assisted the 'shadow war' going on within Rokkenjima at that point it was eyes being drawn elsewhere and with the eyes of the IHC firmly fixed on their stroll into the north it meant that they weren't paying that much attention to things closer to home, against such a backdrop a single warship sailing around the Rokkenjiman Sea likely seemed nothing special. But that was just what helped the Achkaerinese out. So it was here moving into the area around the Tokara islands that the INS Rhyth Icerider (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=1868.msg16205#msg16205) sailed, stood on the bridge her captain Bradley Saunders (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg4146#msg4146) stood, this was going to be an interesting bit of ship handling to get the vessel properly aligned but Bradley was more capable of doing it when he had to.
"Helm eta?" Bradley asked
"About two hours." the officer steering the ship said
"Contacts?" Bradley asked
"Nothing military." came the response. Bradley half smiled if they truly were on their own then this was going to be a whole lot easier than they'd expected.

"The suburbs of Exuperia, plenty of locations along the road which will ensure that stray bullets don't find their way into unsuspecting bystanders. We'll actually be near my childhood home which, if my planning holds up, will be the precise point we meet Seagull. This is assuming they approach us from the hole I have suspected them of operating out of, but," he shrugged, "I could be wrong and we'll instead meet near the town's lake. Either way, I can't wait to see who's face I can finally pin this name to."

Lucinda drew the blanket over Asuna's shoulders, planting a kiss on her forehead before entering her former "in-house" office where she drew the bed from the sofa bed. They'd spent the night talking and laughing together, and even after all that Asuna had found another vector that softened her heart. As the eyes of the Empress fell under the weight of sleep, slumped against Lucinda who took another bite of pop corn as the face behind Ghostface's mask was revealed in Scream 4[/], "never worry about that," she murmured gently, promoting a gentle "hmm?" from Lucinda. "I got me my own super hero," she continued as she tiredly hugged Luicinda before giving into sleep fully. "Oh, you," Lucinda said with joyful tears in her eyes, and as she drew the covers above herself the moment pulled at her once more before rising from bed, opening the door to ensure she was still safe.

"If you only knew what I've done, the many sins I carry for you and your mother," she whispered as she closed the door behind her and returned to the sofa bed. "I'll always choose to be a demon to your enemies if it means I can always be the angel in your dreams," she smiled as she pulled her own covers over herself. "Also, suck on that Freya," she grinned even more broadly, "I'm a super hero, now, adorned by Asuna herself."

"What?" Rion asked over the phone about an hour later, she was talking to Hazel
"Someone tried to kill Lucinda." Hazel said "She nearly beat them to death but I stopped it. That isn't the thing though."
"What is?" Rion asked
"This Lucinda isn't the same Lucinda we know." Hazel said "I don't know what to do."
"Leave it with me I do." Rion said she hung up the phone and proceeded to send a text message before turning her attention to the scene before her Kado was organising his teams, laying his trap. Rion had two of her best at distance in the background, one covering the lake the other covering the town. Walking over to Kado she checked the cyan coloured ARC-SP1 she carried before priming her combat pistol. "Less lethal we need him alive right?"

There was a discernable mood in the Imperial Palace and it's name was fury and it was directed against Lucius Stanley, were it not for the lack of any credible evidence things could be significantly worse than they were but it smacked of an overplayed hand and now Lucius would feel the full fury of the very institution he'd served for many years. Emerson stepped into Asuna's office and found the Empress laying down on the sofa "Don't tell me you and Lucinda were up all night listening to music or something?" he teased, sometimes he had to remind himself that Asuna was still a nineteen year old girl "Or is it her idiot husband giving you a headache?" he sighed and put something on the table next to the sofa "Can't do anything about you listening to music but I can do something about him." he tapped the paper "He's a liability, he's casting aspersions and falsehoods and acting contrary to his job responsibilities. This is an order terminating his employment, sign it and sack him before he does anything more serious. I've got a potential replacement at least for the short term outside"

Emerson waited a moment before walking to the door and showing a woman in "Asuna this is Liosa." he said introducing Lìosa Càidh (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg10131#msg10131) "You may recognise her from various CSU things. I trust her, she's on our side of the equation. She's more than qualified. Short term contract and if you like what she does it's up to you if you want to keep her." he smiled and left the two women alone.

Even to Peter and Renee the tension in the Imperial Palace was palpable, and if that wasn't bad enough another bombshell was about to drop, the Achkaerinese pair waited in one of the reception rooms until they were joined by firstly Evanthe and Sophia and then fresh from his conversation with Asuna Emerson.
"Officially I'm here visiting family." Peter said "But I'm not actually here to see Asuna." he took a folded piece of paper out of his jacket pocket and handed it to Sophia, waiting for her to unfold it "As you know Euphy's been in hospital and in the last few hours has undergone a transplant. Prior to the operation members of your family were tested as possible donors, now according to doctors they would have expected you to have the closest match Sophia being the sister, but you didn't. What you're holding there is the DNA comparison between you and Euphy, it's not even close to sororal." he took a moment "You're not her sister, you're her cousin."

As silence reigned in the room Peter's eyes drifted to Evanthe, as if watching the wheels inside her head turning as pieced it all together, the searching look she gave Peter told him she'd got there "Yes Eva." he said "She's yours... and his." he smiled at Emerson
"Jokes really?" Emerson asked
"I did a lot of raising Evanthe I'm allowed to be funny around her." Peter said "But it's true the child you two thought you'd lost... she's right there in front of you."

"There's migraines, stress headaches, hypertension and then, Lucius headaches," she sighed. "He's somehow found a way to be worse than a liar, I guess that takes some sort of special talent," she continued with a shrug before affixing her signature to the paper Emerson produced. After that she stood and offered her hand to Lìosa for a shake before sitting back down. "When Stanley serves prison time it'll have to be in Achkaerin," Asuna said looking to Emerson, "many of the Anauša who were cleared of treachery in the last scenario transitioned to guard duty. It's not a matter of if but when he's killed if he's subjected to Rokkenjiman prisons and," she paused, "I'd rather he lived to ruminate on his actions for many, many, many years. He doesn't get an easy out, even if that might be satisfying for some, can we agree on that?"

She looked out her window in the direction of Pyrena Castle, "She's with friends, and I can fall asleep knowing she's safe so, it's going to be a good night. What are we doing with the speculation out there that an SIS Agent was the one who attempted the hit?" Asuna asked. "My predecessors might have not seen the rot in plain sight but I do and I am tired of having those serving in my name to forward their own pursuits, it sullies the very nature of duty to crown and empire," she paused as she stood and struck her fist against the nearest hard surface. "I want the SIS to know their number has been called, that this is one line crossed in a series of way too many, and if Rowe is anywhere near this...." she paused again, "we get the bastard, I'm sure I can warm Cole up to the idea of a return from his retirement. He can't resist a request from his little Asu after all."

"And there we go," Alex said with a smile as he presented a mug each to Beatrice and Lucinda, "Alex's pick me up after bad times special, known in some circles as a Quinntopian Hot Mess," he continued with a chuckle as Lucinda downed the cocoa with Quinntopian vodka concoction. "This isn't a hot mess," Lucinda said with a monotone sigh, "you spoiled it with the addition of cinnamon, but..." Alex shrugged, "Glad you're holding up alright for what it's worth, you're in safe hands I promise. If there's anything I can get for you, you let me know alright?" It might of been his quick recovery or the tone of his voice but that's when Lucinda cracked a smile and dropped her shell, "I'm sorry, thank you for looking after me. If anyone thought they could kill me so easily I have some beach front property I can sell them in Morivia." "There's my girl, smiles and all," he said as he turned to leave the room.

Once he had left Lucinda crumpled into Beatrice who, for the last few hours, had been cuddling her under a blanket. "Shhh," Beatrice said as Lucinda whimpered, "you're fine, okay? You protected me for so many years, now it's my turn," she continued as she selected a new movie. "I hope you take from this a lesson," Beatrice continued, "that you can still be an absolute bad-ass while showing emotion; it's not a weakness and," she said as she hugged her tighter, "it's nice to see you feel again. I think the last time I saw you feel like this was when those children withheld my cat from me."

"They were assholes, Bea, they're no longer children and neither are we so we can call them what they are," Lucinda retorted with a playful punch. "Indeed," Beatrice chuckled before adding, "You've got Kado's finest picks alongside the Achkaerinese and the walls of Pyrena so please," she paused as she kissed her forehead, "don't let one asshole make you retreat into your shell once again, because I missed the real you. You gave up so much for me and now, Luci, you don't have to, so be the wonderful you that you are. Don't make me miss you even though I see you every day ever again, and know that the days are numbered for whoever ordered a hit on you, your favourite girl is making sure of that."

"Damn you and your way with words in the right moments," Lucinda sighed, "you got it Bea. Really," she said as she framed her face with her palm, "I tried to outrun it all, all the pain, all the faces, but running is never the right choice, you have to choose to reconcile instead. I've done so much for you I can never let you know about, my hands are filthy by this point, but at the end of it all, I'm still the same girl who'll break someone's ass for making you cry, and Asu," she paused, "I don't need a rank or position to look after her, she's family just as you are to me, even Alex with his peculiarities, thank you for being here with me. I have my family, I've done my due, and now other people are in place to pull the trigger on your behalf. I can finally let my guard down and feel, and damn if it's not beautiful, my heart is alive for the first time in nearly a decade and..."

"...and you enjoy it fully, and keep it, a smile fits your face so much better than the static locked lips, you know?" Lucinda pushed back with mock shock, "Are you trying to say I've spent the last years walking around with resting bitch face, Bea?" That prompted more giggles from the two, "No, never!" Beatrice added, "just, it's good to see you smile, okay? Love you," she added to which Lucinda sighed, "and I, you. Oh here's the good part!" she nearly shrieked as she pointed out the Backstreet Boys in This Is The End. "It's as good as you'd hope to expect."

"Ah, that," Kado said as he put his Type 64 away and produced a stun gun, "much less fun, and to think this is my reintroduction to the field is a "catch and carry back to the pound." Still," he said as he set the gun to its highest setting, "this one, in theory, incapacitates instantly. I wonder if he'll feel the jolts rushing through him, to a degree at least."

"Interesting," Kado would add moments later, "in front of my childhood home is where they intersect us," he said as the vehicle slowed. "Are we ready to remove the mask from Seagull?" he continued with a wink as the door opened from the outside and Intelligence Operative Howard Bailey opened the door. Once the affair was behind them Kado nudged his body with his foot. "Seriously, Bailey?! The fool couldn't handle intelligence back in the Soviet days and here he is, running information for our adversaries? I'd have trusted Kyle Barren delivering his victory on foot over this guy," he kicked his stunned body again before kicking it slightly less forcefully again. "What?" he said to Rion who looked unimpressed, "I had to make sure the bastard's really out, and what better way to do that than a kick to the rib cage?"

"Oh my," Eva said as she turned into Emerson's chest, "she has your eyes," she said as she mounted a smile. "You always had something about you that I loved and now," Evanthe said as she expanded her hug to include Sophia, "it all makes sense. "I'll take care of Euphy through this, but you and I," she continued motioning to Sophia, "we've so much to catch up on, yes?" Sophia took it well for her age, "Mum, dad?" she said simply, "I think I need an adjustment to my allowance for the mental trauma I'm enduring now. I think र20k a week should cover it, yes?" to which Eva shook her head, "Oh my girl, there's more to it all than fortune, but we've years before us. Think you could learn to love us as Euphy, who I'm grateful took care of you?" "I'll give you a chance," she paused, "I mean it's not like I'm meeting strangers, you're both known to me so," she hugged them, "guess we're even closer now, yes?"

"I prefer the kick to the groin area." Rion said "Works wonders." looking down at the man disguised the inner workings of her mind, they had Seagull, Groves was contained and Stanley was under arrest. That just left Rowe, in one respect it was a good thing they'd managed to isolate him but as far as the bigger picture went an isolated Rowe remained just as dangerous and just as capable of fulfilling his part in this conspiracy. Time was something they were now running out of, whatever move that was intended to bring Mieko Anselmo back to Rokkenjima had to be made soon and Rion knew that not only did she know that but so did Alex Rowe, this was still a fair way from being over.

"If I may." Liosa said "Rowe isn't the immediate concern, there are very qualified people dealing with that and they're more than capable of handling it. Your focus needs to be on what's coming up. Your aunt Kyoko has taken action on the legitimacy of the Addendum to the Sakura Umeko Accord, I've not had the chance to take a detailed look at it because I haven't found an office yet but from what the lawyers are telling me, I think it has a reasonable chance of being successful. If that happens then there are good and bad consequences." she took a breath "There's a legal reckoning coming for the likes of Alex Rowe, that will need to be navigated, that's what I'm here for, the diplomatic fallout from this... that's your ballgame."

Peter's next stop was Pyrena, likely people would view this as him visiting Beatrice as her biological father but he wasn't here for her well not directly. No he was here for something else, walking the castle's halls he chuckled when he spied Beatrice and Lucinda sat there, when Beatrice looked up in his direction he waved "May I borrow her for a moment?" he asked indicating Lucinda.

"It also sends a message that can't be confused, doesn't it?" he said as he employed the tactic upon Howard Bailey who in his present state offered no response. "A pity, at least a flinch would've been rewarding, bu...hold on," Kado said as his ear piece shrieked. "Oh that dumb bastard," he said as he shared a view of his screen with Rion, "someone attempted a hit on Lucinda, those poor bastards won't last but a season in a Rokkenjiman prison. I'd leave here now but," he said looking down on Howard, "I've work to do before me. But when I get my hands on him, I imagine it'll only be right to give him an ounce of what she experienced. I must add," Kado paused, "she's different, you know, these days? I still don't know what do do with that, an emotional and feeling Lucinda isn't anything I ever imagined, but something's awakened in her and, I don't know if any of us are equipped for that."

"I see," she said as she retired into her seat. "We'll have troubled waters to navigate, but navigate them we will, Rokkenjimans do not retreat from such waters, we push through them," Asuna said with a reassuring smile. "At the end of the day she's sacrificed so much to protect me so," she said as she looked out the window, "I will sacrifice all I must to protect her, damn the consequences when you stand on principle. You betray your beliefs and principles when it matters most and those same principles are meaningless. Even if it means I have to stand up to the Morelanders, I'm ready, I promise."

"But of course," Beatrice would say, before hugging Lucinda. When alone with Peter Lucinda offered a confused expression, "What possibly could you hope to garner from me in conversation?" she asked as she reverted to her more understood and recognizable emotionless persona. "I was but a mere servant of the Empress, now a friend of the Empress being relieved of my previous constraints. I'm sorry, Sir, I don't know if I'm worth your time in this moment," she continued with a monotone voice.

Peter half smiled as he sat down next to Lucinda, he knew that persona far too well and wasn't the biggest fan of it, he'd always preferred the genuine Lucinda, he was one of the few who knew her from those times.

"The last time you called me sir would be what twenty six, twenty seven years ago?" he said "You remember it?" he giggled a little "Of all the things my children have done to make me proud of them, high up on the list is that they paid attention in school, never got in trouble, never put me in the position of having to get called into the school to have a chat with the teachers... well I say never, there was this one time. Beatrice was twelve and I get called into the school, she'd never been in trouble and I'm wondering what's going on, when I got there with Iona who was sitting outside the headmasters office? A very messy Beatrice in tears, three boys and then right next to Beatrice this scrappy looking girl with dark hair, or to put it another way you, comforting her. I wasn't getting called in because Beatrice had done something wrong I was getting called in because Beatrice had been bullied and another girl had stepped in, beating even the bodyguard we had assigned to look after her. Beatrice's first proper friend, you have no idea how important you are, so no don't give me you not being worth my time."

Peter took a breath, still smiling, "I didn't entirely come here to walk down memory lane with you but it's hard not to." he continued "I remember taking you and Beatrice for ice cream that day, I remember watching you look at each other the same way you look at each other now, I remember when Serenity was learning to talk and she couldn't pronounce your name so she called you 'Luci' and then how Beatrice turned that into your nickname, I remember when Beatrice talked me into getting you out of the orphanage you were in, she didn't know it but she had Daddy wrapped around her finger. I also remember your weird choice in pizza toppings and that getting you to tidy your room was like fighting a war half the time."

Peter handed Lucinda his phone with the photo gallery up "Go on." he said, he smiled as she flicked through it, the album was mostly family pictures there were birthdays, weddings, picnics and so on but right there in the middle of them was a picture of Lucinda in a costume "Remember that?" Peter asked "The school did We Will Rock You for their musical that year and you got to play Scaramouche." he reached into his pocket and pulled out a memory stick "Full copy of the show." he handed it to Lucinda "I remember paying for your singing lessons, which turns out is money well spent and I remember Iona teaching you to play the piano." he indicated the picture on the phone "That's the Lucinda I know, that's the Lucinda that I have always been thankful for just because you've always been there, I may have raised Beatrice but you filled the void she had. Drop the mask and put up your sword, it's time you got to live your life without the metaphorical axe hanging over you and I'm willing to bet I'm not the only person to have said that to you." he glanced at the door and sighed "I can see your shoes Beatrice."

"I remember that day as if it were yesterday," Lucinda said as she recalled Gregory's face as well as those of his squad of goons. "I was just minding my own business when I heard her pleas and Gregory yelling in response, turning my head at just the right moment to see him push Bea to the ground, those other boys just standing there allowing his conduct to continue, someone had to intervene and I did. It's difficult but," she paused, "even after the passage of years hearing her pleas for them to just hand Binky back to her, somehow I can find my way back to feeling that empathy with her in that moment and the rage that followed when I saw Gregory's goony face filled with such pride as he looked down on her after he shoved her. The only regret I have is that I didn't break the bastards leg, though you should have seen the look on his face when I told him I'd do worse than hurt his knee if he didn't hand Binky back immediately. I followed up on him in my intelligence career a few times," she continued, "Gregory never amounted to much, worked a handful of meaningless jobs, two failed marriages, currently unemployed and miserable as he relies upon assistance from the programs the girl he bullied all those years ago implemented. Don't tell anyone I know that last bit," she sighed, "<0 tells me things from time to time."

"It's hard for me to remember our lives are so intertwined," Lucinda said as she recalled the memories, "but it was necessary for me to preclude emotion given all I've had to do to protect her, emotions were a liability and I had to remain focused on the mission ahead of me, I think I can at least rest knowing I executed it well," though it was the mention of Iona that would see her drop the phone and collapse into Peter shedding tears. "I'm sorry," she said in between breaths, "I never got to say goodbye, I'm glad Bea got that chance though, she told me so many times how she was there reassuring you and Serenity, I hope that one day I can make the trip and speak the words that have been with me since that day though. It was so much easier before," she continued as she rose and wiped her tears aside, "but feeling as I do now, not being able to keep my emotions at bay, why it's not hard to understand why my favourite characters growing up were the likes of Spock, Data, and Seven. But then again," she paused, "I guess embracing humanity as Data and Seven did, is something I'm not incapable of, so I have to accept the emotions and embrace them as part of who I am, not something to be fought."

"Ugh," Beatrice said as she emerged, "though I have to say you're even more of a badass knowing you felt my pain and couldn't do anything other than bring it to an end so, thank you," she said as she sat next to Lucidna and took her hand into hers. "Your duty has been fulfilled, a thousand times over, and you have my eternal thanks for always being there no matter what it was, from schoolyard bullies to international assassins, you kept not only me but my family safe, but that duty is now Kado's, and you can live however you wish so please, just do it. You know I'm not going anywhere, and that you can't get rid of me easily, so just as you had my back for so many years, let me have your back now and support you in doing what you want to do, yes?" to which Lucinda replied with a nod. "Good," Beatrice said before adding, "you'll always be someone special to me, never forget that, and I'm sure we can arrange for you to have some time visiting Iona's grave, I'm sorry you couldn't be there but I'm confident she'd be proud at everything you've accomplished so don't beat yourself down, anyone who knows you would be proud of you, so keep your chin up and," she said as she embraced Lucinda, "sorrow is powerful, but positive emotion sends energy straight to the heart and spreads warmth, and you're surrounded by it, I love you Luci."

"And I you," Lucinda replied, "and before us is tomorrow, a new day, one I look forward to. Thank you," she said as she gripped her tightly, "though don't think I'm growing soft. You walk Stanley or Gregory through that door as a test of my empathy I promise I'll properly throttle each of  them into the next life," she continued with a giggle. "Well that won't be happening as one of them is in prison and the other is banned from the grounds of Pyrena Castle, though if you wanted to go to the music room I'm sure we could work out a piano-organ duel?" "Indeed," Lucinda replied, "you play The Entertainer on organ and I on piano, and Peter judges which one of us performs it best?" she looked over to Peter.

Sophia Forrester, Rear Admiral, Imperial Rokkenjiman Navy

"I could not hide my presence here so, this is an event which will inevitably raise alarm bells in Imperial High Command," Sophia said as she bowed to the Empress. "For that I apologize but, if I am to continue to be your bullwark, I needed Cole at Imperial High Command yesterday to maintain things as they stand today. Asuna, my influence goes only so far, reigning in Rowe is an option that will soon be depleted as he picks up on where my loyalties truly lay. I promise you that I'll maintain my position for so long as I can, but, eventually, it will be me facing down an SIS squad, and I imagine they'll be sent to kill me when that moment comes. I don't care if what you have now is enough to pin anything on the bastard, I am telling you though that waiting has a cost, and while it's one I am willing to pay, I'd rather not, understandably. Do we have an understanding?" she said with urgency.

"Emerson," Asuna said as she stood, "if Forrester falls we fall," she paused for effect, "I don't care what procedural measures stand before us, we'll cut through them if we have to but Rowe's time at IHC must be brought to an end. Henry Cole has said he'll retake his former duties if I should deem it necessary well, I'm deeming it necessary today. That whole report in the RBC about the Cecelia Anselmo is the last straw and, while I can't prove it, I can't help but to think Rowe wouldn't see using the Kōketsu to his advantage as a chip he'd decline playing at this point. Rowe's done," she said as she sat, "help me to do this officially, please, I know a few who would see it done unofficially, so to say, and they'd be all the more happy to see it done. Plus," she paused, "Cole retaking the reigns of IHC insulates him; there's few who'd dare take a shot at him given his reputation amongst the rank and file. Sure we risk Rowe acting recklessly moving forward but, I'd propose, he's already acting as such. If Sophia needs Cole, let's see that it happens."

"It really doesn't do any of that." Rion said she'd been standing in the room with Kado "Remember they've taken our pieces off the board as well as us taking theirs off the board, you take Rowe now when there's no hard evidence against him and it looks very much like he's our piece not theirs, and that's without the legal situation."
"Correct." Liosa said, she was sat next to Emerson and looked at Asuna "It becomes a lot harder to court martial Rowe successfully, which we're going to need to do to put an end to this affair."
"And now you're wondering why we're saying wait." Rion said "To use the chess metaphor, Groves was the sacrificial pawn, Kikyo Hase is the pawn waiting to be promoted, Lucius Stanley was the Rook, Sumire Abruscato the bishop and Seagull the knight. Rowe is the Queen, he's not the King and that's the point. The King is the one we want, the one we need to get. This whole conspiracy is a revenge trip against the Imperial Family and it's a good forty years plus in the making, this doesn't end until we get our shot at the mastermind behind it, we want this threat eliminated not kicked down the road. We know their endgame the Youth Diet is days away, but before then something is going to happen and it's going to happen in Kusan. We want Rowe off the board as much as everyone else but we want to do it when doing so doesn't allow the threat to simply return later down the road. Rowe's job has been to prepare the stage so to speak for that threats return that he's done and now he's got to pull the trigger on actually setting it in motion. He will bring the person behind this onto the board, he will bring them within our reach and then my people will end this in an appropriate manner. Rowe must be taken alive because someone must be held accountable for everything and that is ultimately him. Waiting has risk and under any other circumstances I'd be agreeing with the Rear Admiral but in this instance not waiting is far riskier. We wait and we get the chance to end this."

"I understand," Forrester would add, "as such I'll increase my survivability. I can maintain command of the IRN from IRN Enterprise and, if Rowe wishes to see me dead he's an entire air wing and various assets at my disposal aligned against him, and he has to pinpoint where I will be. As I designed the underseas doctrine of the IRN, I know their game better than their captains do, I'll outrun the bastard but," she said as she looked to Rion, "can you promise me you'll get the series of bastards so I can hang them on my wall? I like my war trophies, after all."

The talks in Posan had been going well with Princess Sophia and Ri Sang-Hee finding common ground on many of the matters before them. Information from the Kusanese leader had been forthcoming, with a level of transparency the Princess had not expected and, most importantly, an agreement for full access for Rokkenjiman teams investigating the attack in Pyrettania and just where the fissile material used in the attack had come from. Just as the closing of the meeting had begun one of the Kusanese generals rose, bowed and left the room despite questions from Ri Sang-Hee as to the reason for his departure. In a brief moment, noticing a suitcase underneath the table at which they sat, Ri Sang-Hee lifted Princess Sophia from her seat and ran for the nearest window, driving both of them through it just as an explosion ripped through the room where they had previously been seated moments ago.

"That way," Sang-Hee said through short breaths, fighting the pain of shrapnel which had found itself in her back, "it'll be about 2.5 miles before you reach the border with Kalasin, and you will give the border guards this," she produced a passport-sized document, "it should get you across the border. You tell your people all that we agreed to and what happened here, you understand?" "I can't just leave you he...." Sophia would protest as she began to attempt to assist Sang-Hee to her feet before being pushed away. "Don't live up to the moniker of foolish child in this moment, not after what we accomplished. Run, and do not look back!"

Sophia hesitated for a moment before committing to running, however, she soon found herself on the ground as a Kusanese soldier knocked her off her feet. "We have both Sang-Hee and the Rokkenjiman, they survived the attack," they would say into a microphone before saying, "very well." With breathable cloth bags affixed to both of their heads they would again see the world around them after they'd been transported to a Kusanese prison.

The True Leader Addresses Present Situation, Promises "Vindication"

Respected Comrade Ri Chŏng-jun, having been declared Supreme Leader of the DPRK following treasonous actions of the Disgraced Comrade, has placed the DPRK on a state of "war readiness."

"Despite the vicious attacks against the character of our nation and our very right to exist my sister, it pains me to say this, spoke at great length with the Rokkenjiman Princess promising them what is essentially the complete capitulation of our DPRK to the imperialists," Respected Comrade Ri Chŏng-jun said as he attempted to the best of his ability to hold back tears. "It is unfortunate, however, I have been forced to place Sang-Hee under arrest and have taken the Rokkenjiman Princess as a prisoner of war. Watch in the video as she admits that Rokkenjima is an imperialist power that only desires the complete subjugation of our DPRK before their hostilities will cease." The Respected Comrade paused as a video aired from the Princess stating the following:

"I came to Kusan under pre-determined arrangements with Ri Sang-Hee, who has become an asset of the First Empire in a war against your people, to secure the final terms of surrender. I am being treated well, far beyond what I deserve from the glorious soldiers of the DPRK, and urge the First Empire, the Empire of Fusan and the Holy Empire of Achkaerin to heed the words of the Respected Comrade: get out of Kalasin and Southern Cotf Aranye and Onishi hogs, keep your stench on your own continent. If the terms of the Respected Comrade are not adhered to, war will soon commence."

As the cameras returned to the Respected Comrade he continued, "We stand at the highest levels of war readiness to see our adversaries, the imperialist bastards, driven from our neighbourhood permanently. I also call on the Kingdom of Clysperis to send its rust bucket ship home, if you attempt to unload your cargo for those in Kalasin we will see that your carrier becomes a submarine. You, who preached against the very nations you seek to help now, are not one of Aranye, but one of the imperialist scourge that keeps all nations lock step in line with their agenda. We can still realize tragedy in Nemphis, remember that, Pharaoh."

The news had hit before Forrester had left the room, "Get her back," Asuna said as she looked to Forrester, "send the entire damn fleet if you have to but..." "Your Majesty," Forrester would say with a bow of her head, "I saw with full concern for Princess Sophia but this," she said pointing to a frozen image of Ri Chŏng-jun, "is the opening I feel Rowe was waiting for. You'll be demanded to act undoubtedly, but you must show restraint. I can't, in good conscience, do what you want me to do without making things much worse. Ms. Rion, I believe you've a new investigation before you, I have no evidence but my gut tells me that this development isn't an accident and if we start asking the right questions, we'll find something doesn't add up here. As for you," she returned her attention to Asuna, "I don't believe the Kusanese will harm the Princess; she's far too valuable alive than she is dead, so as hard as it is please have patience. At the moment he slips up, if I'm correct," she said referencing Rowe, "get me Cole at my back and I'll have this all sorted in short order."

"There's a reckoning at the end of this and when that happens, when we get Rowe held to account the last thing we're going to want is Henry Cole exercising any authority over the Rokkenjiman military." Liosa said "Use him as a confidant, use him as an advisor do not put him on the board because that gives Rowe a shield when we get to the reckoning."
"More immediate concerns." Emerson said "Rion?"
"Remember that I said there was a move that was going to bring the main threat into play? This is it." Rion said "You start a war with Kusan and you make Rowe bulletproof, he becomes the person who rescued Sophia Anselmo and at the same time he brings the true threat to Rokkenjima's shores. We'll ignore for now that he's doing a Palpatine and that Ri Chŏng-jun has likely been sponsored by Rowe to execute that coup."
"Countermove?" Emerson asked
"How long does it take you to get the Diet back from their recess?" Rion asked
"Twenty four hours to get everyone back to the capital." Emerson said "Add in the debate, the vote... about forty eight hours before Rowe gets his war."
"Can you guarantee me that forty eight hours?" Rion said "No retaliatory strikes, no offensive action?"

Emerson looked at Asuna, it was going to be tricky, the public would be baying for blood, they'd be demanding action. "Yes but we can't guarantee a second more than that." he said
"Ok here's what we do." Rion said "Standard procedure is that Rowe is going to want a meeting to discuss the military response, that's likely coming the minute you recall the Diet." she looked at Asuna "You're going to agree to that but it's not you he's going to meet, it's going to be me. You're going to need to give me the authority to arrest him. At the same time as Rowe's here Kado will take his INIS agents, bust into IHC and shut the place down, he'll arrest every member of the SIS."
"On what charges?" Liosa asked
"At this point conspiracy to commit criminal damage." Rion said "That gets Rowe off the board and we can continue to gather evidence on what we suspect in the meantime. Split the SIS agents up, apply pressure and see who rolls on Rowe."
"And he's not running the show while this builds to the crescendo." Emerson said
"Which will be the Youth Diet." Rion said

The Marble Palace's Round Table Room was once again full of the various people who needed to know what was going on. The video conference line to Commonwealth House was being used so Peter could participate and somewhere in the skies heading south from Seaforth Serenity was listening on the phone, she could have used Fox One's videoconferencing but in this instance wasn't due to the fact that she was also ferrying Evanthe home, Euphy was doing her best to help the situation by trying to keep Evanthe occupied with of all things picking out Serenity's outfit for the Youth Diet.

"Ok talk to me." Peter said "Do we know where she is?"
"She's at a prison in Kaesong." Sally Barkley, the head of Achkaerinese Intelligence, said
"And we know this how?" Peter asked
"Because when it comes to CP we take our job very seriously." it was Rion's voice over a phone line "Long story short each of the Anselmo's has in their possession something fitted with a tracking device. In Sophia's case it's a charm bracelet."
"I got her a charm bracelet when she turned twenty one..." Peter said
"Yes you've been quite helpful in this regard." Rion said "We don't know 100% that she's still wearing the bracelet but we did observe the signal moving from Posan to Kaesong. So Sophia's there."

Adam Sheppard, the Minister of Defence, looked up "General Starling what are you proposing?" he was addressing Lassis Starling (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg27934#msg27934) the commander of the Achkaerin Special Forces.
"We go and get her." Lassie said "Special Forces insert across the border from the Vax region, we send in a support troop as well, to cover the exit route."
"On foot?" Adam asked
"Only way we're doing this." Lassie said
"That's one hell of a tab." Adam said "That's close to a hundred and fifty kilometre round trip."
"So we're talking about a prison break?" Peter asked
"Yes." Lassie said
"What do we do when Kusan figures out it was us?"  Peter asked
"They don't need to figure that out to guess it or level an accusation." Adam said
"We do it like we did the Cecelia rescue." Rion said "We use Ri Sang-Hee's presence to provide us with cover. We make the op a deniable job, we make it look like it's a backlash. We do this right Kusan will collapse in on itself."
"You're asking what I think you're asking aren't you?" Peter said
"Yep." Rion said

"We'll need the Senate's sign off." Adam said
"We do a veiled seven." Elena Brooke (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg4875#msg4875) said
"What's a veiled seven?" Nettie asked
"It's a method of how we get the Senate's sign off on military action when we don't want to advertise that we're doing it." Elena said "It's what we did when the Cult of Helus Genocide happened."
"How's it work?" Nettie asked
"First we put something up on the business that's going to probably take all day and is serious enough that the whole Senate will likely be there. In this case Troyes, we'll table a motion to do with it, in effect that's the veil" Elena said "While that's going on, I take the proposed military action matter to the various party leaderships behind the scenes, they brief their members and then there's a rolling vote through the day, at the end of business we tally the vote in the presence of specially appointed attestors who along with myself and the Speaker sign as to the validity of the vote."
"We have forty eight hours." Peter said "That takes up tomorrow's business in the Senate."
"I'll have the troops prepped and ready to go the moment we get word." Lassie said

"Do it." Serenity's voice finally came through the line "Elena you call me with the vote outcome once the process is done, General Starling you get me the details of what you're proposing to do. If the Senate agrees you'll get the go as soon as possible." she took a breath "Rion?"
"Yes?" Rion asked
"This only gets you check it doesn't get mate." Serenity said
"I know but it's mate in three." Rion said

In Jenka-Jenkinson the Imperial Ryusei had touched down ahead of the return flight the following day. The chosen pilots for this part of the operation were Eloise Lloyd (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg3795#msg3795) and Ethan Rodriguez (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg3796#msg3796), the pair usually operated cargo aircraft for the Achkaerinese military, but here they were not in their military uniforms but wearing the outfits worn by the Imperial Ryusei crews, getting measured for them had been an experience.
"Ok powering down." Eloise said going through the procedure to shut off the power to the aircraft.
"Things we never thought we'd fly." Ethan said
"It's up there." Eloise said "Never thought I'd fly as basically a commercial pilot."
"First time for everything." Ethan said "Bunch of teenagers aboard tomorrow and then we have to fly them back."
"And we're taking the scenic route." Eloise said

"By all means," Asuna said with a motion of her hand, "I'm sure Kado will enjoy his part in this as well. I know he's been itching to finish off the SIS, so whatever needs to happen has my full sanction. I can't see my reign as truly my own until these echoes from the past are wiped clear from the board, we must ensure that no one, domestic or foreign, ever has a chance again to steer the course of this First Empire without the consent of the Rokkenjiman People and Chrysanthemum Throne. Whatever plots were set into motion before, they end here," Asuna said with a firm fist sat down against her desk.

Fortune had played a hand to Ri Sang-Hee and, by extension, Princess Sophia as the prison they found themselves in was staffed primarily by those Ri Sang-Hee had chosen for their assignments. While she was still in rough condition she had received medical attention for her wounds and sat in a cell adjacent to that of the Princess. "My foolish brother," she said across the hallway, garnering an irritated stare from the guard on duty, "and you keep out of it, if it weren't for me you'd still be a poor farmer boy struggling on the outskirts of Hyesu, your farm was amongst the least productive and here you are, with a job that ensures the pensions of not only yourself but your family so shush, yes?" Ri Sang-Hee continued as she looked back over to Sophia, "He has to keep up appearances, the cameras are always watching, thankfully no audio. He'll be forced to strike me in another few moments so listen well."

"I'm far more valuable alive than I am dead, that's why we're here now," she continued. "Ri Chŏng-jun recognizes that as well, which is perhaps to an extent why we're being treated relatively well to this point; he can't make a martyr of me and he can't kill you, and while I am imprisoned I still have friends in the Politburo that have ensured we're here in this moment together now. You did remember what I told you of the blinking, yes?" she asked in reference to Sophia's videotaped release to the press which she nodded yes. "Good, those versed in such situations will have all they need then. I suspect I will be here longer than you," she sighed, "but when you're rescued, make sure that they know we were on a positive path, that despite the odds you and I found common ground, and that which my brother is doing is on his own accord. This request might be the last one I am able to make on behalf of the Kusanese and I entrust it to you, can I be certain you will honour it?" Sophia paused and thought before responding, "Sang-hee, if anyone is coming for me they're going to have to take you too, otherwise I won't leave. I'll ensure they know how you saved me and then they wouldn't be able to leave you here to die."

Sang-hee chuckled, "if you have any chance at rescue you take it, and damn what happens to me, your principle concern here is your survival, not mine." Sophia then stood and placed her hand over her heart, "That's all fine and well, but I was raised that we don't leave a friend behind. They either take us both, or neither of us goes, you've still essentially open wounds after throwing me out of that window and you still fight me on this?" Sophia asked. "Do as you will," Sang-hee replied, "but one of us is more consequential than the other in making out of this alive, and that one is you. Don't sacrifice yourself on my behalf, otherwise all we worked on will be in vain."

"That's enough," the guard said as he opened Sang-hee's cell and butted her head with his rifle. "No further communications will be allowed between the condemned." "Hit me," Sophia shouted, winking to Sang-hee, "like you did her, make my capture count for something. Because once I'm outside of this cell I'll be an entirely all new animal for you to deal with." The guard walked over to her cell and sighed, "Strict orders, not a hair on your head harmed, but if you wish," he said as he struck the butt of his gun against her fingers, "if you're going to act tough, you'd best keep up appearances for the cameras, yes?"

Liberty Hall was a hive of activity in the morning, while the debate on Troyes progressed, Elena was doing the rounds of the various party leaderships she was presently in conversation with Rosemary Carter (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg17194#msg17194) of the Progressive Party and Adam Lonsdale (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg17196#msg17196) of the Republican Party. She was handing over the briefings for them to have their members look at.
"It's a veiled seven." Elena said "It's an operation, if done correctly there's no blowback."
"How big of an if is that?" Adam asked
"It's a variable we don't completely control." Elena said
"Smash and grab with a twist?" Rosemary asked reading the file
"Yes." Elena said "We're hoping in and out within forty eight hours."
"I'll put it to my party." Rosemary said
"As will I." Adam said

In Kalasin, Lassie had arrived to brief the Special Forces on the operation should the Senate vote in favour of it. She had the four ASF Troops in a tent gathered around looking at a map. "It's a smash and grab raid with a twist." Lassie said "It's about a seventy five kilometre trip to Kaesong, so a hundred and fifty kilometre round trip with a probable firefight in the middle. Intel puts Sophia Anselmo and Ri Sang-Hee in this prison here." she tapped the map "It's towards the centre of the city, there will be a third person you rescue, it is a third woman and she will be in close proximity to the other two. We don't know for certain what she looks like but we have got a guess." she handed out a sketch done using age progression techniques. "If the Senate approves you go over the border on foot as soon as it starts to get dark, you go light, you will likely need to acquire transportation when you get close to Kaesong, Sapphire will secure the rendezvous, Topaz will secure the exit route, Shadowblade will do the rescue and Midnight will handle the twist. This is a deniable operation, that means weapons and ammunition will be those issued to the Kusan military, there's a collection over there." she indicated a few crates. "We're called the scalpel, this is where we prove it. Gear up and be ready because if we get the go then you need to be gone at that moment."

In Pyrettania Rion was waiting around, it had happened Rowe had requested the meeting with Asuna and was on his way, she looked up as Kayleigh came over.
"What's the play?" Kayleigh asked
"As soon as Rowe sets foot in here, you lock the place down, Kado does what he needs to do. I'll deal with Rowe." Rion said
Title: Re: The Plot To Destroy Rokkenjiman Democracy

As soon as Rowe saw Rion he sighed, "Of course it would be you, what, Kado isn't enough of a big boy to face me himself? Tell me," he said as his hand moved towards his service pistol, "what do you think one envisions in the moments where they're breathing their last breaths?" he continued as he drew it.

As Rion confronted Rowe Kado's teams descended upon the SIS, methodically removing pieces from the board as they progressed from one target to another. There had been some resistance offered, though Kado and the INIS knew their longstanding adversaries well enough to see them systemically dispatched. While the process took some time eventually Kado was given the all-clear and, upon verifying sufficient space was available in Rokkenjiman holding cells he sent a text to Rion.

"Got 'em all, they're currently questioning the life choices that brought them to their present moment, transports are inbound across the board. INIS are prepped for some celebration, you're invited. I'm buying. 😘"

"Gemma," Asuna said as she turned her gaze from the window, "forgive me but I sent him a message," she could already see the visible sigh. "He won't compromise anything though and," she turned back to the window, "mum wouldn't leave Alex wondering if she was waiting for him, I couldn't leave Thomas in that uncertainty and it's a gamble if that message even gets to him, I'm sure your people properly patted down everyone leaving the Imperial Palace so he's likely still feeling that pain and that doesn't sit well with me, I had to try and I hope you can understand that. He deserved me making an attempt after all, and don't hold it against <0 for being willing to facilitate my transfer of a message to him please. That line of responsibility ends with me so let me bear the consequences, not them. She wouldn't of done it if I hadn't asked, after all. I'm sure you have all the logs of me accessing our satellites to peek in on his ship," she paused, "and if I weren't here under lock and key I'd have the United States making steam there in this very moment. Speaking of which," she paused with a grin, "once we have Rowe, can I do that? It'd be quite the surprise and I'm sure the Tytorians would be wondering why an ocean liner is bearing down on one of their naval squadrons but," she paused again, "think of the impression it would leave, not only on Thomas but his crew," she would offer a giggle.

"Honestly." Rion said as she aimed her own weapon, she was quicker on the draw than Rowe by virtue of already having been expecting him to pull a weapon so as soon as she'd seen him go for his she'd raised the pale blue pistol that was in her hand, it was the ARC-SP1, a salt gun or rather a pepper ball pistol to describe the ammunition. "It's whether or not Helus has a pet honeybadger." she squeezed the trigger twice in quick succession hitting Rowe centre mass, the man staggered as if expecting a bullet but then the spray took effect, the tell tale sign was when the hand came up and that was when Rion made her move closing the gap quickly she kicked Rowe's gun from his grasp and threw him to the floor. "Let me guess." she said "It's been a while since you did the training for such things." she put her knee on his back and cuffed him "Alex Rowe you're under arrest for conspiracy to commit criminal damage, conspiracy to commit an act of terror and conspiracy to murder." she looked up as Kayleigh opened the door "Wash out his eyes and lock him up."

"You got it." Kayleigh said taking Rowe out of the room.

Gemma sighed "It's not me who's going to have an issue with <0." she said walking over and putting her arms around Asuna from behind "That'll inevitably be Kayleigh and it'll last maybe thirty minutes because that's her job. And we will not discuss the amount of covering that gets done with the intelligence agencies in Rokkenjima about your satellite usage." she giggled "Now as for Thomas if you're patient and you let Kayleigh make the phone calls that will need to be made because of the situation we're in then we will absolutely have the United States ready to go after this is all over and done with. Meanwhile what are you wearing for the Youth Diet tomorrow night?"

"Poppycock," Rowe mustered with a measure of difficultly, "you'd best...damn it, get me my lawyer at once." As Rowe spoke he heard growls from a nearby door, "get...get me away from that mutt!"

"I see," Asuna replied, "though I would like to speak with Thatcher the moment Rowe is dealt with; we've the hardened line that dates back to the Cold War that I understand <0 and Lucinda saw upgraded to an end-to-end encrypted fibre optic connection between Pyrettania and Tsargrad to replace the previous system in place since the Cold War between Tytor and the Federal Republic. I know nothing can be done on the public front right now," she sighed, "but I think coordination and transparency with such a close friend would ultimately be beneficial, and I can't imagine Mikina Hayata has had the best of times with the Prime Minister. She deserves some pressure being relieved from her shoulders so with your go-ahead," she motioned toward the door, "once the all-clear is relayed to us I likely should make a phone call across the Strait."

Kado had one additional promise to live up to and, as the SIS agents were rounded up on various transports, he allowed Lucinda an opportunity to speak with a restrained Lucius Stanley before his departure to the next Imperial Prison. Lucius sat silent for the most part, not once mustering the courage to make eye contact. "So," she finally said, "this is how it ends, not anywhere near how we envisioned our future but with a man looking at the ground instead of having even the conviction to look me in the eyes. Very well," she said as she stood and turned her back to him, "if you were expecting Kado to hand you off to me, to reactivate a site or two to extract vengeance, you'll find yourself disappointed. The only thing in your future is trials, associating with general population, and fading into obscurity as time and the very world moves beyond you. You gave it all up," she said turning toward him and drawing closer, "only to lose it all. No method at my disposal that I could think of could do a better job than the one karma has crafted for you, so," she booped his nose, "enjoy what is before you and use your remaining time on Mundus to think upon everything you've done. Goodbye, and good riddance, Lucius."

As she walked out of the room Kado placed a hand on her shoulder, "I'm proud of you," he said which prompted Lucinda to present a raised eyebrow. "He facilitated an attempt on your life and here, knowing I'd cover for anything you might of had in mind, you spoke the words you needed to and walked away. I guarantee those words will haunt him for the rest of his life, especially if he's transferred to an Achkaerinese facility, which will result in many years for him to ruminate on them. You're finally free," he said as he looked her in the eyes, "embrace that and live your life to the fullest. As for the Anselmos, your watch is over and you stand relieved, let me do my job in taking up your steed?" Lucinda paused before giving Kado a tight hug, "You know I'll always watch over them in my own way but, I trust you'll see I don't need to so, I best not see any slack from you and yours." With a chuckle Kado responded, "I learned from the best, so, if there are any failings on my part I'll be asking you why you allowed them to persist through my training under you. Now then, may I transport the prisoners to their next home?" which Lucinda responded with a nod.

"Very well, High Commander," he said with a respectful bow before turning to his subordinate, "see that these wastes of space reach their next destination, preferably unharmed of course. Though if they offer resistance," he said training his eyes on Stanley, "well, you know what's within your rights to exercise legal force if necessary."

"Get him out of my sight." Rion said, she waited until Rowe was hauled away before opening the door and finding Akira there "Good boy." she smiled, checkmate in two she thought.

The sun in Kusan was reasonably warm and the air humid, the go for Operation Mockingbird had come the previous evening, the twenty four Achkaerinese Special Forces soldiers had made their way quietly across the border. Under cover of darkness they'd made decent ground, leading the way through the hills was David Winters (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg3176#msg3176) coming from the scouts regiment he was more than qualified to get the group across the difficult ground as fast as possible, he commanded Topaz troop and was ably backed up in this regard by Sapphire troop commanded by Craig Moores (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg3177#msg3177), as they crested a hill into a copse David held up his hand bringing the group to a halt. At that point the other two troop commanders Heather Rose (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg1485#msg1485) and Charlotte I'Joula (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg3131#msg3131) joined the two men.
"What have we got?" Heather asked
"Kaesong is about a forty kilometre straight shot from here but you can see the increasing number of small villages and urbanisation." David said pointing from the high ground vantage point they had "We'll stand out like a bit of a sore thumb trying to walk through there in the middle of the day. I'd say wait for night but we're on the clock."
"We need wheels." Charlotte said
"There's a truck in the village at two o'clock." Craig said looking through his binoculars "And there's an APC over towards nine o'clock."
"Charlotte get the APC, Craig get the truck." Heather said "Bring them to the road at the bottom of the hill."
"Disguise?" David asked as two of the troops moved off.
"Yep." Heather said "We need to be in Kaesong tonight and that doesn't happen by skirting around because we'll end up circling the whole city. Can your team hold this vantage point?"
"Yep." David said

About an hour later the two vehicles were sat at the bottom of the hill, the APC had been outright stolen of course, while the truck had been borrowed for a fair amount of cash and a promise of silence.
"Ok so here's the plan." Heather said "Topaz holds the high ground here, this is the RV point when the time comes we get out the way we came in. Craig you've got the truck, that's the getaway vehicle, you drop Charlotte's team at their point and come to the prison, you hold position there. Charlotte you do your job and make your way there. My team we've got a jailbreak to do so we're taking the APC. On the way out we drop the truck back at the village and make our way back here on foot and then we get across the border. On a helicopter by the morning, home for tea and medals at a reasonable time. Heads on swivels and stay alert. Ok let's do it." The drive to Kaesong was uneventful, this far from the border there were far less obstacles to go through, no checkpoints, no patrols, there were obviously fortified positions but nothing that was going to stop traffic into the city itself. The two vehicles parked up in separate areas, though they weren't that far from each other - the APC was about a mile from the prison and the truck was closer to the Chairman's residence.

When night came the plan swung into action, first Charlotte and her team slipped out of the back of the truck and climbed a nearby fire escape making their way to the rooftops. Once there they took up their positions, Charlotte primed the weapon she was using and looked across the street and fair bit of greenery to the Chairman's residence "Ok let's see here." she said as she looked through her scope.
"Third floor window." Sgt Midgely said from next to her "That's his room."
"You got vantage on the second floor?" Charlotte asked
"Yep." Midgely said
"Ok Parkes." Charlotte said addressing one of the other members of the troop "You spot. Bridge you light." now it was a waiting game, it took another hour but eventually Ri Chŏng-jun stepped into Charlotte's crosshairs.
"That's him." Parkes said
"This is Midnight One I have the shot." Charlotte said
"All callsigns this is Shadowblade One." Heather's voice came over the radio "I have control, standby, standby, standby." she was undoubtedly looking at her watch's ticking second hand "Go."

"Midge." Charlotte said, right on cue trooper Bridge lit fire to the bolt that was loaded into the crossbow that Midgely was holding, then Midgely squeezed the trigger, the bolt flew straight and true right through the second floor window, the fire was set. Now Bridge lit the bolt on Charlotte's crossbow.
"Third floor window's ajar." Parkes said "He's probably in bed."
"Ok here we go." Charlotte said, she fired her bolt through the third floor window, it hit the back wall which would spread the fire.
"Reload." Midgely said, him and Charlotte reloaded before repeating the process and firing another bolt each.
"Ok let's rabbit." Charlotte said

Just up the road the APC with Shadowblade troop aboard was charging at full tilt down the road towards the prison, in the driving seat was Richard Duncan (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg1491#msg1491)
"Right on the gate." Heather said
"Hold on tight." Richard said as he put his foot to the floor and as the guards outside the prison began to open fire realising what was about to happen the APC punched through the gate much like a battering ram.
"Go go go." Heather said as her team disembarked from the now ruined vehicle, leaving Richard and one of her other team members to hold the courtyard the other four proceeded inside, rifles up and ready. The Riley brothers Tim (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg1486#msg1486) and Luke (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg1488#msg1488) were clearing the administration area of the prison their target was the security  control room. With Luke holding position and delivering suppression fire down the corridor, Tim ducked inside and accessed the system, inserting a thumb drive he hit his radio.
"Shadowblade two, drive is inserted." he said, now he had to wait as the virus on the drive did its thing and wiped the entire system.

Heather meanwhile alongside the last member of her team Luna Knight (https://independentorder.net/index.php?topic=49.msg1489#msg1489) was fighting her way through the cell blocks. It was a little on the slow going side but it was also clearly a set up, that much was obvious from the number of empty cells, rounding another corner they spotted a guard and Heather downed him with a quick pull of the trigger.
"Boss." Luna said as the lights on their rifles illuminated Sophia.
"That's one." Heather said as she pivoted and illuminated Sang-Hee in the cell across the hall "And that's two, go check the corridor."
"Boss." Luna said, heading down the corridor while Heather took the keys off of the dead guard and opened the cells, as she helped the two out of the cells she tapped her radio "Cottontail and Little Red Riding Hood secure."
"Goldilocks secure." Luna's voice came over the radio as she came back down the corridor with an older woman, just slightly older than Cecelia, this was Mieko Anselmo, Evanthe's mother and the mind behind this whole thing.
"Sapphire I want that exit now." Heather said as they started to make their way back through the prison.

Outside Sapphire troop had arrived with the truck and on foot so had Midnight troop, the firefight was raging on the street against the backdrop of the flames a little way away.
"Let's go, let's go." Tim yelled as one by one the former prisoners were helped into the back of the truck.
"Everyone rabbit." Heather said, that was the cue for an organised withdrawal, everyone got aboard the truck and it accelerated away, once they were away from the city centre and racing out of the outskirts it was at that point that everyone took their breath.
"Craig you made the drop right?" Charlotte asked
"Yep." Craig said "Whole letter from a group claiming responsibility for the nights havoc."
"Good." Heather said

At the Imperial Palace Kayleigh, having ensured Rowe was locked up in a secure facility walked into Asuna's room, with a smile on her face.
"We got them?" Gemma asked
"Yeah Sophia, Sang-Hee and the big bad wolf all on their way here, they'll be here by morning." Kayleigh said
"So what's the earliest Asuna can make a phone call to the Tytorians?" Gemma asked
"The morning." Kayleigh said "The moment they're in the grounds of the Imperial Palace we can lift the blackout because at that point all the pieces are within our control, we've weathered the storm, Rowe and Stanley are in custody, navigating the aftermath is going to be a whole different kettle of fish but don't worry about that yet, when the time comes we'll have that conversation and we don't need to have it for a couple of days or so. Meanwhile you get a good nights sleep, tomorrow's the Youth Diet, tomorrow we take their last piece off the board and by this time tomorrow the threat will have been dealt with."
"But you have to promise us something." Gemma said "When you talk to Thatcher you tell her everything that you are aware of, the last thing we need is to put the Tytorian Prime Minister in a situation where she ends up misleading their MP's."
