Mktvartvelo: Government advances electoral reform

Prime Minister Bidzina Samkharadze has announced that the national government has introduced two bills that aim to reform the current electoral system of Mktvartvelo. Samkharadze declared them as a "balanced and sensible legislation...and long-overdue needed modernization of our electoral system".

The Voting Reform Act and the New Electoral Commission Act, the two bills introduced by the government, aims to important chances. On one hand, the Voting Reform Act aims to introduce the complicated electoral rights (which introduces certain voting restrictions for unmarried citizens and males without military training under thirty), removing those restrictions after citizens are 21 years old, establishing an effective universal suffrage at that age. On the other hand, New Electoral Commission Act will remove some important financial and organizational restrictions on electoral campaigning, removing restrictions on political participation of lawmakers and candidates, which a minister described as "ineffective and unoperative". More importantly, it is likely to empower political parties in Mktvartvelo, by allowing elected members of the parliament and the government to be elected and remunerated in non-institutional political office in official capacity.

The national government is confident that both legislation will have enough support to pass in both chambers of the national parliament. However, the New Electoral Commission Act seems to have brought the first tensions between the Prime Minister and the President of the National Assembly    Ramaz Kintsurashvili, as well as some of the senior members of the National Assembly, as they feel that it will reduce their influence in the parliament while empower political parties, even if the law does not directly affect the rules of the parliament, and political organization will have not legal recognition regarding the internal organization of the national parliament. Others have criticized that the legislation is likely to increase tensions and divisions, rather that improving the effectiveness of the national parliament. On the other hand, those supporters argued that it is positive step toward a more competitive electoral process, improving checks and balances in the country, as well as improving the choice of citizens regarding policy issues.

Eteri Bakradze, representative from the Youth Political Society, has declared that they believe the Voting Reform Act is a step toward the direction, although the legislation is "far from perfect" and they would have prefered a clearer and more advanced reform toward "full equality" in voting rights. She has confirmed that her organization, with more than 2 million members, will campaign in support of the legislation, while declaring that they will have a neutral instance regarding the New Electoral Commission Act.

Poll predicts a sudden shock in Juglander politics

According to the last poll from AJS, the Progressive Liberal Party will consolidate as the largest political party in Jugland if elections would be held today. According to the demoscopic company, the Progressive Liberal Party would obtain an estimation of 34-38 seats in the Legislative Assembly, a considerably increase from the current 22 seats.

In the last election, the Progressive Liberal Party was already the largest political party, although by a small margin and obtaining the same number of seats than the Constitutional Party. While the prediction is hopeful for the Progressive Liberals, the Constitutional Party, the political party which has dominated political landscape in Jugland since the 2010 constitution may be close to suffer their worst electoral defeat, as AJS would only predict them to obtain 7-11 seats, a loss of at least half of their representatives in the Legislative Assembly, and risking their chances in the State Governorate elections.

The National Democratic Party would return as the second largest political party in the Legislative Assembly, as AJC predicts them a slightly improvement from the current 12 seats to 13-15 seats. This result would give the Progressive Liberal Party the largest majority in the Legislative Assembly since the 2011 legislative election, in which the Constitutional Party obtained a landslide victory of 39 of 101 seats. While it is difficult to predict the effect of such result in the executive elections and the composition of the next government in such prediction would become a reality. However, at the local level, the prediction is frightening enough, as according AJS the Constitutional Party would go from becoming the largest political party in 7 of 18 Jugland's districts to only be the largest political party in one of them.

Both the Green Party and the Solidarity coaltion would experience a slightly increase, with 7-9 and 8-10 seats, respectively. Along the Constitutional Party, the Reiwa Party would be expected to obtain a lose of 5-8 seats in the Legislative Assembly, although AJC predicts that their loss would not be enough to endanger their prospects their reelection in the executive council for one of the ethnic districts. But the poll may be a warning that the party is losing appeal between the East Ardian community.

Regarding the smaller political parties, the Freedom Party, which recently elected a new leadership, would suffer a loss of 2-3 seats, while the Christian Independent Part is expected to obtain a similar result, consolidating their representation in the Legislative Assembly. On the other hand, the leftist Workers Democratic Party is predicted a considerable increase from their current one seat to 6-7 seats.

Despite the hopeful prediction, Secretary Grimwaldyna Nygaard, co-leader of the Progressive Liberal Party has declared that they are mostly concerned to focus in the current agreed agenda in the State Governorate and their legislative work in the Legislative Assembly. "It would be a mistake to distract ourselves for a poll", she said when asked directly before a government meeting. "We must keep advancing the citizens well-being, that's our view".

Azavrelia Mundus Games: Asketyll Omdahl gives Jugland first medal in Cycling Road Race

Asketyll Omdahl was third in the Cycling Men's Road Race, obtaining a bronze medal, first medal obtained by the Juglander team in the Azavrelia Mundus Games.

The peloton started the race at a large speed and it became soon obvious that the race was going to be tough and difficult to control. After passing Meghalimeori, Omdahl found himself in a third group. Although his options to the gold medal seemed to fade away, he continued his effort, risking considerably in the descend and catching the remaining riders of the breakway, one by one (excluding, of course, the leading duo). Behind, the Juglander team stopped to cooperate in the persecution, as Juglander director of the national team Ealdwyn Tornstad explained later, as the options to catch the two leading riders seemed remote.

With still 40 km to the finish, Omdahl found himself in nowhere land, alone, as if he were riding in an individual time-trial. While the Vinitsia and Daito teams insisted in the persecution, the margin between them and the young Juglander rider was large enough, and even increased in the last kilometres as the group slowly dissolved.

"It was not easy but I knew he could achieve it", director Tornstad said, "as Omdahl won similarly earlier this season the Tour of Mdinare". Omdhal crossed the line exhausted, but overjoyed with his bronze as soon as he recovered and was congratulated by the other Juglander riders, as well as by Givi Sopromadze, his teammate at MKT-ZSD cycling team.

Football: Jugland defeats Mktvartvelo

Men's football started with an anticipated football match between Mktvartvelo and Jugland, held in the Otsnebis Karkhana Stadium. An important number of authorities, including Brzdmtsveli Ketevan and Juglander Secretary Emmeline Kolseth, attended the match.

While the match was evenly-matched during the first half, it was decided easily in the second half, as the Juglander team defeated Mktvartvelo by 1-4, to the disappointment of the local fans.

Juglander Yudai Fujii, with one goal and two assistances, was declared as MVP of the match.

Mktvartvelo: Government approves two new licences for national television channels

Eldar Baqiladze, Ministry of Telecommuncations and Information, has confirmed that the government will make official next week the legal process for applying for one of the two licences for a national television channel in Mktvartvelo. It is expected, if there were no further legal challenges, both televisions channels would be able to start to operate in four months. It has been reported that some important media companies have been in advanced negotiations and well positioned to achieve those licences. However, Baqiladze assured that the bidding process will be public and under independent and fair conditions, as established by the legislation, and the interests of the citizens will prevail.

Prime Minister Bidzina Samkharadze has previously assured that the decision was carefully considered and it is aimed to improve the diversity of the television media and increase the choice of the consumers, by increasing competitiveness and therefore the quality of the sector. However, some of the existing media companies fear that the decision could have the opposite consequences, by the dividing the pie of the advertisement industry in the television sector, reducing the revenue of the existing channels and therefore eventually forcing the channels to either close or merger if they want to survive. "I don't feel there is market for two new generalized television channels", a former executive from Channel 9 has declared, "we will simpy enter in a period of adaptation, in which all we will struggle financially, and it will be seen if the new channels would be able to survive and whom they will replace if they are able. While the sector will survive, I'd expect the average quality to decrease for a while, particularly for those who support for quality content and their own production".

However, giving the increasing rumours about negotiations between companies in the last weeks, some investors seem likely to disagree with that prediction.

Azavrelia Mundus Games: Jugland obtains a second medal in cycling

Fryda Andersen gave Jugland the second medal these Mundus Games, after finishing second in the women's cycling road race. The veteran rider becomes the first athlete to win a medal in two different Mundus Games, as she was third in individual time-trial in the Arashkai Mundus Games.

The veteran Juglander rider found herself in a second group. She attacked in the final ten kilometres, when the group was about to leave Azavrelia plains, to win the silver medal. "I knew that if I resisted the hills, I'd have a chance in the last kilometres. It is a pity that I was not able to fight for gold, of course, but we are happy with this medal". She admitted that she was not necessarily the first option and she was not sure if the second group would be able to be kept together to the end. "I found myself in a favourable situation, as I knew they would not be able to organize that easily with no teammates in our group".

It had been a disappointing season for the 33-year-old Juglander rider, whose best results had been a 9th place in the Vid Cycling Race and a third place in the Juglander National Championship Road Race, which led many to wonder if Andersen should focus in ITT with the national team. However, Andersen showed that she can still make differences against the best riders of the peloton in her own terrain. She will also participate in the individual time-trial race, although she declared that it will difficult to predict her chances, giving the effort in the road race.

Mktvartvelo obtains first Mundus Games medal

Eto Katanadze gave Mktvartvelo their first medal in the Mundus Games, after she finished second in the 50m Backstroke. The Mktvartvelian swimmer was not between the favourites, but she was able to assure the silver with a clear difference against her closest rivals.

Laparaki acquires a large number of shares in Kommuna Inc.

Laparaki, the largest telecommunication company in Mktvartvelo, has announced that it has acquired another 35% of the shares of Kommuna Inc., the largest mobile company in Jugland.

The telecommunication firm based in Albrektberg has recently came to the news when Isiasovoria-Lodja Telecommunications attempted to take over the company, which was opposed by Kommuna Inc. business leadership. In this case, the sale had the nominal support of Kommuna leadership and was subjected to negotiations. It is estimated that the operation costed around $600 million.

Ewald Huhtamo is expected to continue as CEO of Kommuna Inc., at least for the moment. However, a new Board of Directors will be appointed in the coming weeks, in which Laparaki is expected to appoint, either or indirectly, half of their membership.

The announcement has caused some doubts how the move will affect consumers, being Kommuna the most successful mobile operator in Jugland, as well as concerns about the competitiveness of the sector in the Safraen Gulf territory, threatening either the establishment of a monopoly or the eventual disappearance, through an eventual uneven merger, of one of the leading companies in Jugland. However, Laparaki has declared in a written statement that the operation will strengthen the company, giving consumers an improvement of their service and assurances about the future of the company. If these promises will be met with actions in the coming future, it will remain to be seen, of course.

Mktvartvelo: Electoral reform passed by National Assembly

Mktvartvelo's National Assembly has passed the New Electoral Commission Act by 325-269, paving the way to remove retrictions on campaigning and political parties. The approval of the legislation, combined with the approval of the Voting Reform Act earlier this week, supposes a key step in Prime Minister Bidzina Samkharadze's reform agenda.

Both bills will be sent to the Council of State now, where they will be debated before their final approval. While the government supporters has declared these reforms as "the most consecuential political reform in decades", a government spokesperson has declared that the national government is "satisfied by the legislative support" but asked for prudence before adding that the government will be looking for "possible improvements of the legislation", which was signaled by many as a call to the more conservative-leaning Council of State that the government will be willing to negotiate an amend of the legislation to avoid the bill blocked by the Upper House of the national parliament.

Mktvartvelo: Minister under fire for wiretapping scandal

Deputy Premier for State Administration Anzor Papuashvili, considered the fourth highest ranking official in Mktvartvelo's national government, found himself in what could be described in a wire-tapping political scandal.

Earlier this week, online newspaper "Akhla!" started to publish a series of transciption and audio recordings involving several Azavrelia local officials, including Papuashvili, who at the time of the recording was Mayor of Azavrelia, a position he left earlier this year when he was appointed as Minister of State in Prime Minister Bidzina Samkharadze's government. During the recordings, which seem to be edited although authentic, Papuashvili talks about or mentions leading Mktvartvelian officials or important people including former Prime Minister Gela Berdzenishvili, late Brzdmtsveli Tamaz Japharidze, businesswomen Makvala Bendukidze and Ketilshobili Shengelaia, television star Nino Gamrekeli, Chairman of the Council of State Vakhtang Tsiskaridze and, more controversially, Brzdmtsveli Ketevan Chakhava.

During some of the most striking recordings, Papuashvili described a scheme of pacts, alliances, and compensations between important Azavrelia-based officials and the regional administration which, although it has generated many words and debates in the media and even in the parliament, do not seem to have surprised the average citizen. However, it was the more politically banal conversations which has increased the heat on Papuashvili's situation right now. In one much repateated recording since its release, Papuashvili uses expressions such as "frivolous", "cunning", "smarmy", "sly as a fox", "guileful", "of cursed blood", and "phony" to describe Brzdmtsveli Ketevan. In another recording, he describes the now Mktvartvelo's head of state as "a woman with a primal obsession with the closeness of power".

Even if the date of the recordings were before the death of late Brzdmtsveli Tamaz and therefore Chakhava was elected as head of state, members of the National Assembly and several newspapers have called Papuashvili to resign immediately as minister. The conservative newspaper "Akheli Ambebi" has argued that "a minister who oversees and coordinate the understanding of the nation's institutions can not behave like an irresponsible chatterbox or charlatan, even in private".

However, Papuashvili has threatened with legal actions against those involved in the recording, release and publishing of the tapes, which he has described as an "illegal conspiracy" and denies any wrongdoing "from a legal point of view" in a written statement. The minister was scheduled to visit Azavrelia this weekend, although his agenda has been suddenly cancelled, according a spokesperson of the Ministry of State.

Mktvartvelo: Minister resigns following wiretapping scandal

Anzor Papuashvili, Deputy Premier for State Administration and Minister of State, has announced his resignation after he found himself in the middle of a wiretapping scandal. He becomes the first minister to leave the government in Prime Minister Bidzina Samkharadze's administration, only six months after the government was formed. Before being joining the government, he served as Mayor of Azavrelia for eight years, a period in which the controversial recordings which have eventually led to his resignation took place.

"I'm sad to announce my immediate resignation from all my government duties and positions", Papuashvili announced. "I'm doing so to avoid becoming an obstacle to the work and reputation, even if unfairly, of the Council of Ministers that I was, until today, proudly to be a member. This does not mean, of course, that I concede the accusations which have been poured against my person these days. Unwillingly, I found myself as a victim of a illegal conspiracy, which reasons and motives I am not able to figure out in the present, and against with, in defense of the law and my own honour I will continue to pursue legal actions. I'm proud of the work I have led in the ministry and the government, with the help of my colleagues and subordinates, and I am certain that path will be continued without me".

"Finally, I express my gratitude to Prime Minister Samkharadze for his confidence in me and his leadership", he ended his annoucement, in which he did not allow questions from the media.

A government spokesperson confirmed that Veriko Gaprindashvili, Minister of Administrative Affairs, will replace Papuashvili as Deputy Premier for State Administration and Minister of State. Papuashvili's replacement as Minister of State is expected to be announced between today and tomorrow.

Azavrelia 2022 Mundus Games: Local fans thrill as Mktvartvelo team shows their skills in Gymnastics

The local national team has found in Gymnastics a reliable source of medal in these Mundus Games, after the first days following the inauguration which already showed some doubts about the prospects of the hosting nation in the final results.

It was precisely the women's rhythmic gymnastics that gave Mktvartvelo their first gold in these Mundus Games in Team All Aroud Rhythmic Gymnastics, with a clear win against Lijiang and Rokkenjima.

Gulisa Pshaveladze repeated medal after she obtained bronze in the clubs category, which was continued by her teammate Inga Kiacheli who obtained silver in hoop after she could only been sixth in ball on the morning.

The slightly deception of Tinatin Araniani, who could only be fourth in rope, only away from bronze by a few points, was compensated by a third medal by Pshaveladze in ribbon, who was second. Although she declared to be "to be a bit disappointed" to be so close to the gold, she will change of mind when she realize that she will be remembered as the first Mktvartvelian to have won the three types of medals.

Imeda Abashidze, in the men's category, gave another medal to Mktvartvelo as he obtained silver in individual trampolining, while Silamaze Dadeshkeliani gave Mktvartvelo the sixth medal in gymnastics as she obtained bronze in the same discipline in women's category.

Mktvartvelo: New Minister of State is sworn in

Tinatin Chelnokidze took oath today as new Minister of the State, after Brzdmtsveli Ketevan swore her in an official ceremony in Ktsatskuri. Chelnokidze was appointed by Prime Minister Bidzina Samkharadze following the resignation of Anzor Papuashvil as consequence of a recent political scandal.

Her appointment has surprised many in Mktvartvelo, as different names had been rumoured as possible replacements for the leaving minister. Chelnokidze, a member of the National Assembly, has a reputation of Liberal-leaning and controversial MP, particularly in her confrontations with previous Prime Minister Gela Berdzenishvili¡s administration.

Chelnokidze, 41, declared that she is "honoured to join the government" and promised to "serve the citizens of Mktvartvelo in my best capacity". Unlike Papuashvili, who had a wide political experience in both local and national politics, Chelnokidze's only political experience is as lawmaker, even if she was reelected in a highly competitive electoral district six months ago while the leaving minister had not stood for an election since 2008. However, the opposition has criticized that the appointment as they view Chelnokidze as "too sectarian" and "lacking a spirit of compromise" that many see necessary for leading such ministry.

While there seems to be a clear agreement in Mktvartvelo's media about the wide contrast between the leaving minister and his successor, both in ideology and personal profile, Chelnokidze did not offer a view if the appointment will suppose an important impact or change on the policy of the ministry.

He was elected by a plurality, obtaining 46% of the votes, but with a clear distance of his rivals, who ended more than twenty points behind him.

Mundus Games: Mainio Salminen wins gold in Cycling ITT

Mainio Salminen gave Jugland the fifth gold medal after he won the Mundus Games Cycling individual-time-trial.

The Juglander rider showed a great form, after his result in the last Jugland's National Championship, in which he finished second after Snorr Gunvaldsen in the ITT race. However, Salminen consolidated his lead already in the first kms of the race, which he finally won by a difference of one minute and one second. Kimmo Peltonen finished fifth, almost three minutes behind Salminen.

Salminen declared that he knew well the distance and the race profile was a highly technique individiual-time-trial which, in his view, suited him over some of his main rivals. There were some doubts about Salminen's fitness this season, in which he only won a stage win during the Ashina Grand Tour, with another win against the clock during the Tour of Nordansk, a race of a lower category in the professional peloton. "I had the confidence that I could achieve this, and first preliminary times at the beginning of the race gave me certainty that I had the legs to do it. There were high expectations in us, so I'm proud to have repeated as Mundus Games champion".

Mundus Games: Mktvartvelo triumphs in basketball

Mktvartvelo added two more gold medals after the Mktvartvelo national team won both finals in men's and women's basketball, in a historical day for basketball in Mktvartvelo. After eleven days, Mktvartvelo climbs to the 15th position in the Mundus Games.

The Mktvartvelo men's team showed the strength than during the rest of the tournament, where they have had an average of +30 points. The Vinitsian team, after a good start, offered some resistance, although the Mktvartvelian team took a clear lead after a 19-2 run in the second quarter. In the third quarter, the difference was reduced to eleven points, after Vinitsia scored several three-point shots. However, their chances were soon faded away in the beginning of the fourth quarter, ending the match with a 76-54 result. Malkhaz Terentishvili was named the MVP of the match with 22 points and 6 rebounds

Avtandil Revazadse, Mktvartvelian coach, praised Vinitsian defensive play. "It was not an easy match", he said, "but I had confidence that we had alternatives to gain our advantage, even if it wasn't our best match. I can only be proud of what this group has achieved, and we look forward for the future to continue this path".

Meanwhile, the women's team faced a more evenly-matched rival against Nis. However, the Mktvartvelian took a clear advantage at the end of the third quarter which was only reduced in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, ending in a 86-78 win against the northeastern Coft Aranye nation, to complete this "Double Gold" for Mktvartvelo in basketball.

Legislative Assembly passes controversial resolution in support of Eigg

Jugland's Legislative Assembly, the Juglander parliament, passed a motion in solidarity with the people of Eigg and calling for the release of Queen Aoife. The resolution, proposed by representative Hayashi Maki, former member of the Reiwa Party, called "the right of nations to self-determination is a fundamental and democratic right" and condemned the Federation government to violate such right.

The resolution was passed clearly with a 33-11 vote. However, more than half of the members of the Legislative Assembly abstained, including the representatives of the Progressive Liberal Party, the Constitutional Party and the Green Party. Another eight members from the National Democratic Party abstained, although four of their representatives voted for the resolution. Erwyn Moen, leader of the Freedom Party, denounced the leadership of those political parties in the State Governorate" as a "servile, unprincipled, and cowardly" attitude.

Secretary Nestani Baramidze, leader of the Solidarity Party, which all members voted against the resolution, calling the initiative an "irresponsible and political provocation".

The resolution is not binding and has not any kind of legal effect, however, only having a declarative value. A spokesperson of the State Governorate, highest executive body in Jugland, has declared that the State Governorate resepcts the work of the Legislative Assembly, but it will not comment on the issue.

Women's football: Azavrelia FC signs new talent

Mktvartvelo's Azavrelia FC has announced an agreement with Phuebran midfielder Soeurn Kunthea and her current club. The club from Azavrelia will pay $229,000, a transfer record for women's football in Mktvartvelo, which women's league became a professional league only last year. The Phuebran player will also become the second best paid football player in women's football in Mktvartvelo.

Kunthea, 23, has played in Vaguzian and other Alba Karinya clubs for most of her career, and it was rumoured that clubs from Achkaerin, Lodja, and Vinitsia were interested to sign her up. However, she finally decided to join the Mktvartvelian club. Kunthea has gained a reputation for her crafty and creative style of play, often playing both as either winger or central attacking midfielder.

"I feel it's time to take a new challenge", Kunthea announced in a statement in social media. "A new journey starts for me, one that I'm excited to start". It is expected that she will travel to Mktvartvelo in the coming days, to take a medical test and sign her new contract with the club from Azavrelia. It is expected that it will not be any obstacles, however, and she is likely to join her new club new week.

It is not the only transfer announced by women's club Azavrelia FC, which last week announced the transfer of Djabidjan 17-year old striker Zèkla Limbau, which will join the club after Azavrelia FC agreed to pay $175,000 to Jangju FC and Limbau's legal representatives. However, the Djabidjani striker will not join the Mktvartvelian club until March, after she will be 18 years old, remaining another six months in her current club.

These new transfers are expected to increase the level of both Azavrelia FC, which currently stands 5th in Mktvartvelian women's foootball league, and the league itself, as well as attracting new talent and starts for the coming season. However, not everyone seems to be positive about these transfer. For example, Nina Pasikhasvili, deputy chairman of Olimpi Azavrelia, another prominent football club from Azavrelia, has questioned these transfer as "completely out of the market", and called the league to introduce more serious financial fair play rules for the stability of the league. It is not expected that such calls for reform will be successful, however, at least for now, considering that Azavrelia FC owner, Zhuldys Birinseli, has recently been appointed as deputy chairman of Mktvartvelian football league.

Mktvartvelo dominates women's 400m in last Mundus Games day

Eter Tskhovrebadze became the sensation of the last days in Azavrelia, as she obtained gold in Athletics women's 400m, and leading the Mktvartvelo team to win another gold in the women's 4x400m event the next day. The Mktvartvelian supporters thrilled with excitement at the Azavrelia National Stadium as they obtained the final 17th gold medal for Mktvartvelo in these Mundus Games.

The Mktvartvelian Sports Federation has declared to be "greatly satisfied" with the 43 medals that the Mktvartvelian atheltes obtained in Azavrelia, finishing 13th in the final medal table, declaring the Azavrelia 2022 as a "formidable and promising success" both in terms of organization and results. The Mktvartvelian athletics particuarly shone in Gymnastics, where they obtained 24 medals (more than the half of total medals obtained by the local team in the Mundus Games), as well as team sports such as basketball and handball.

"We have showed that we're a world power in some disciplines and categories", declared Merab Arakishvili, minister of Sports and Civic Education, "while we are clearly proving to be more and more competitive in others. I am convinced this will just an outstanding first step for this nation's sports".

Mktvartvelo's State Broadcasting announces new leadership

In a written statement, the Executive Council of ERT, Mktvartvelo's state-owned radio and television network, has announced that journalist and producer Irakli Helimishadze will replace Avtandil Gamrekeli as Director of the state broadcasting corporation. Gamrekeli, who had been appointed Director of ERT in 2014, was rumoured to leave the company since Prime Minister Bidzina Samkharadze's government came to power.

Unlike Gamrekeli, Halimishadze has not previous experience in ERT, and he has not been actively working as journalist since 2015, rather in executive and producing roles in media business and associations. While he is widely respected in Mktvartvelo as a professional for his experience in media, there has been a considerable number of criticism regarding his choosing, particularly in conservative and right-leaning media, as Halimishadze is considered to be too close to Sakin Media Group, a media corporation where he worked during most of his professional life in journalism, and which is seen as either pro-government or close to members of Samkharadze's government.

Helimishadze is expected to address the National Assembly once his appointment is made effective in the coming days.

Fryda Andersen wins stage in Tour of Ardia

Fryda Andersen won the second stage in the Tour of Ardia, after she outrun her rivals in the last metres in a close mass sprint which required a photo finish. The veteran Juglander rider showed a strong performance barely several weeks after she obtained silver in the Azavrelia 2022 Mundus Games road race.

"We knew that it was going to be a complicated last kilometre", Andersen explained, "as the last curve so close to the finish was going to leave teams without time to organize themselves. I had strong legs today and I'm so happy to have won here today". It was the first win in the Tour of Ardia for the Juglander cyclist who will also wear the green jersey in tomorrow stage as the leader of the points classification.

"We always ride to win", she replied when she was asked if this changed her plans for the tour or it eased the team pressure for the following days. "We have come here with a strong team, and we have many options for the coming stages, as well as the general classification. As we say, the road will speak. But I expect it to be a quite open race this year. But we'll see. I do not expect big differences tomorrow, but it is going to be a tough day, I am sure".

Mktvartvelo: Supreme Court reviews same-sex marriage legislation

Mktvartvelo's Second Senate of the Supreme Court passed the preliminary review of the Fairness and Equality Act, which was passed two months ago introducing for first time same-sex marriage in the legal body of the country. The majority opinion of the view was highly critical of the legislation and was passed by a 5-3 vote. The review came following a legal appeal by 28 members of the National Assembly, who argued that the introduction of same-sex marriage in Mktvartvelo would be a violation of the constitutional order.

The majority opinion argued that some clauses of the legislation may be in contradiction with the Charter of Khisjvari, which is considered the basic constitutional text of the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo (even if, officially, the country has not a written constitution). "By considering the question in abstract, the legislators seemed willing to evade any obstacle by moving in circles in their reasoning", they argued, "however, the National Assembly can not ignore or selectively choose the founding principles that empowered and limited their own power and competences".

The minority opinion, on the other hand, argued against a "subjective and circumstantial reading...which is against the basic distinction between civil and religious judiciary in our legal order" and holding the opinion that "the caution and prudence of our role and duties should be enough warning to weigh in the terrain of intentions, motivations, and acts either foreign or unconnected to the written law".

However, the review will not be legally binding, and the final ruling will not be determined until a coming joint session of the Supreme Court, which is expected to be held in the coming days or weeks.

Mktvartvelo: Armed Forces successfully tests new military missiles in naval exercise

The Mktvartvelo's Armed Forces tested cruise missiles in a naval exercise north to the Gulf of Safraen, in international waters, national media has reported.

Skhivi-1 and Karishkhali-27, developed by Mktvartvelo's defense corporation Parebi Systems, were successfully tested during the exercise, the former destroying targets at a distance of 260 km, the official report announced. Both models were completed as part of the Joint Defense Development Program in cooperation from the Ministry of Defense, although they were previously developed by Parebi Systems. A spokesperson of the ministry has declared that they are hopeful that new prototypes of Skhivi-1 are expected to have the missiles' range extended but gave no more details.

The exercise also included the launch of two Kukhili-2 medium-range cruise missile from Mktvartvelo's soil. Minister of Defense Brdzeni Chavchavadze described both the exercise and the tests as "fully successfull", declaring that the tests paves the way for likely early induction of the new system into Mktvartvelo's armed forces.

"The successful tests are in line with our government compromise toward increasing and empowering our nation's defense capabilities in accordance to be able to have credible minimum deterrence and our policy to assuring peace and defense through strength", Chavchavadze declared. He described the exercise as a success in "results, organization, and operation". Later, the Ministry of Defense released a video which broadcast images of projectiles being launches from both the ground and the air, with drones in the air and buouyant targets in the sea being hit.

Young cycling talent dies in Mktvartvelo

Local media has reported this morning the death of Merab Djobadze, 23, a promising Mktvartvelian cyclist, has died as the result of a traffic accident nearby Chiaiki, northern Mktvartvelo.

Djobadze was training along his cousin, who rides for an amateur cycling team, when he was hit by a truck. According to the reports, the truck's rearview mirror impacted against Djobadze's back of the neck. The fall caused him the fracture of several ribs and serious damage on his spleen. When emergency services arrived to the scene, he was declared dead.

The news has touched the Mktvartvelian cycling sphere, and sports in general, with many sportpeople expressing their condolences for the death of the young rider either through the media or in social media. Riders like Shalva Kvachantiradze, Ramaz Gamkrelidze, Givi Sopromadze, Tariel Kipiani, Levan Chabradze, as well as his teammate Juglander rider Asketyll Omdahl, are expected to attend his funeral, and cycling races worldwide have announced moments of silence and others forms of sympathy for the deceased rider. Rider Tamaz Kvekvskiri declared Djobadze's death as "a personal and national loss".

Djobadze was considered one of the most talented riders of his generation, with a highly successful career in the junior category, including winning twice the Mktvartvelo's Junior National Championship. He became professional in 2020, showing proof soon of his talent, winning races such as the Ozukrha Cycling Race, Gazapkhuli Grand Prix, and the Nordheim-Sandberg Classic, as well as winning two stages in the Tour of Mktvartvelo. In 2021, he finished 11th in the Tour of Ardia, winning as well as the Youth classification, which was considered for many as his presentation in the international peloton.

He joined MKT-ZSD team in late 2021, but his plans for the next season had to be postponed after he suffered a serious crash during the Tour of Samkhreti in which he broke several bones and was forced into a long and slow recovery. The accident did not affect his will, his friends have claimed, working hard for his recovery and his return to the competition. This finally happened last August, when he returned to Tour of Mtakaris, finishing 37th. Three weeks ago, he finished third in the Drozapkhulis Grand Prix, and he seemed to move to the right path, as it was expected that he may be included in MKT-ZSD squad for the coming Tour of Ardia.

Sadly, those dreams vanished today.

Mktvartvelo: Council of State strikes down electoral reform

Mktvartvelo's Council of State, the Upper House of the parliament, rejected both the Electoral Commission Act and the Voting Reform Act, by a 81-48 and 78-51 vote, respectively. Both laws had been previously passed by the National Assembly, introducing important legal chances on the right to vote and the organization and funding of campaigns. The result was a clear setback against of Prime Minister Bidzina Samkharadze's government.

As a consequence, both legislation will return to the National Assembly, in which they will require a 400 of 599 vote to become law. As both legislation are highly contested by conservative MPs as well as an important faction of what is often described as the "Moderate Faction" of the National Assembly, it is considered unlikely that the legislation would achieve that clear support. Instead, many expect weeks and even months of negotiations, of uncertain result, in an attempt to convince moderate representatives in either the National Assembly or the Council of State.

Prime Minister Bidzina Samkharadze has declared that, although disappointed, he respects the decision of the Council of State. Notwithstanding, he promised that his government will continue to work for a way to improve the electoral system toward a more fair and balanced one, that improves the freedom of choice and political participation of the Mktvartvelian people, he declared. Sources from the government have declared their confidence that such reform will be able to be achieved before the next legislative election, which are to be held on February, before the end of the current year.

Sygnyr Mydland finishes third in Tour of Ardia

Kommuna Ladies Sygnyr Mydland finished third in the women's Tour of Ardia, becoming the first Juglander rider to achieve the podium in the Ardian stage tour. While she started the tour neither as one of the favourites nor her team main contender for the general classification, the young Juglander showed a great consistency through the race, from least to most, particularly in hilly and mountain stages. She took the third place in the podium in the last stage, finishing five minutes behind the Tour of Ardia winner, Alisa Maksimon.

"At first, of course", Mydland declared, "this was not my objective. But day after day, I felt I had the legs, feeling better and try to give my best. I'm proud what we have achieved, and this could not have been possible without the team working this last day", she added in reference to the last stage. Mydland also clearly won the Youth classification and contributed so Kommuna Ladies could win the Team classification for first time.

The Juglander rider, after some rest, is expected to finish her season focusing in the last races in the Mundus Cycling Cup as well as the Nordheim-Sandberg Classic. Mydland is expected to continue next season in the Juglander cycling team, after a season which was certainly marked her consacration in both the team and the peloton, with a 5th place in the Lacuna Classic earlier this season, and a stage win and a second place in the Tour of Khelvakheli last Summer.

Tour of Ardia: Asketyll Omdahl wins "Queen stage"

Juglander rider Asketyll Omdahl, riding for MKT-ZSD, won the last mountainous stage of the 2022 Tour of Ardia, after launching a long-distance attack. The young Juglander rider showed that he can also perform comfortably in the highest climbs, winning the 248-km stage, considered the "queen stage" of this Tour of Ardia.

The victory is certainly a confirmation and culmination of a great season for Omdahl, who also won the Lacuna Classic and the Tour of Mdinare, as well as a bronze medal in the Azavrelia Mundus Games.

It was the second stage win for a Juglander rider in this Tour of Ardia, after  Walden Gjeldnes won in the fifth stage. As consequence of his win, Omdahl climbed to the sixth place in the general classification.

The generation classification also had another important changes, after Thanh Chau Huynh crossed the finish more than nine minutes after the Juglander rider. With only one stage to finish the tour,  Vadim Viktorov took the general classification with one minute and forty-nine seconds ahead of Achkaerinese Timothy Coulter before the final individual time-stage. Despite his bad day today, Thanh Cahu Huynh retains a clear advantage to at least keep his place in the final podium over Vespasianus Nissus, the best local rider, and his teammate the Djabidjani Amechi Toplis.
