Mktvartvelo: Ancient temple unearthed nearby Jugland

Archaeological excavations in the region of Nordansk-Hokubuchiiki, where a team of archeologists were working in a 11th century settlement, have led to an unexpected discovery. Nearby the site, the archaeologists discovered a smaller but more ancient site. To their surprise, a temple which dates back to more than 2,900 years ago was unearthed.

A team of Mktvartvelian archaeologists, with participation from the University of Albrektberg, had been working in the site since 2016. If the discovery is confirmed, the unearthed temple would be most ancient native temple ever found, being several centuries older than the mythical temple of Pirveli Kvatsminda.

The team of archaeologists plan to expand their project with this discovery, but they are very hopeful about the prospects of this discovery, which they hope give more light about the ancient history of the country. The temple seems to be formed by a main nave and two corridors, being surrounded by a limestone wall with a highly elaborated system of buttresses. The archaeologists discovered fragments from statues and objects which may give information about the rituals and role of the temple. The archaeologists also identified, in one of the mosaics found in what remained in one of the secondary corridors, an inscription of a double axe, one of the main symbols of the Order of Simartlea. The inscription would be the oldest depiction of a double axe ever founded.

A spokesperson of the Holy Order of the Simartlean Wisdom has offered their cooperation with the project. The archaeologists also confirmed they found fragments from several tablets which they are hopeful which may give information about Proto-Utkhrami language.

The archaeologists are prudent about whom built the temple, as the site is relatively far away from the closest known settlement from that era. "The excavations and research may take years", Matthias Vuorela, Professor of Ancient History in the University of Albrektberg declared, "but this amazing discovery may give answer to many questions which were still unanswered as well as opening new questions".

Mktvartvelo: Prime Minister proposes the creation of a new security ministry

Prime Minister Brdzeni Kvirkvelia has announced that the national government aims to enact a law which would establish a new ministry.

The national government plans to establish a new ministry, the Ministry of National Security, which would be aimed to strengthen national security and fight terrorism through counterintelligence and cooperation with law enforcement agencies.

The new ministry would take competences currently under the Ministry of Public Order and Security, which could be renamed as Ministry of Public Security and which focus instead on law enforcement and security-related administrative issues. It is not clear if the aimed new ministry will have their own law enforcement agency.

The Prime Minister made the announcement during a visit to the Guram Ananidze National Military Academy, located in Senakha, which celebrated the graduation ceremony on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the creation of the academy. Some lawmakers have expressed concern that the Prime Minister addressed officers and soldiers during the announcement in military uniform, even if wearing the traditional badges of retired military officers. "His Excellency the Prime Minister may be still confused about the difference between the nature of his past role as a soldier and the current one", a member of the Council of State declared anonymously according to newspaper Dedamitsa.

The national government seems confident that the law will not face significant opposition as it is aimed to improve the efficiency of law enforcement and security agencies. However, this view is not shared by everyone. Prominent liberal-leaning MP Nino Shalikashvili has declared she hopes that the National Assembly will not tolerate "any attempt to military law enforcement".

Swimmer Gulisa Kadagishvili gaves Mktvartvelo first medal in 2023 Mundus Games

Gulisa Kadagishvili obtained the first Mktvartvelo's medal in these Mundus Games, as she finished second in the women's 100m Backstroke. It was the second Mundus Games medal for the 20-year old Mktvartvelian swimmer, as she finished second in 50m Backstroke in the Azavrelia Mundus Games.

"I trained and I was hoping for the gold, of course", Kadagishvili declared, "but I am very happy for this medal. We will keep working to improve this result".

Sports: Thora Bjekrnes hopes to have another chance at Time Trial after 4th place in Mundus Games Road Race

After two successful years in the Mundus Games, Jugland national cycling team failed to achieve a medal in road race, as Germund Strand finished fifth in the men's road race while Thora Bjerknes finished fourth in the road race.

While she was not able to obtain a medal, Bjerknes showed a strong performance since the first kilometres of the race, proving the excellent shape she showed two weeks ago when she won the Tour of Marnaki, her first professional win in a stage race (and her first and only win this season).

"Of course, a top ten in the Mundus Games race is not a bad result", Bjerknes declared after arriving to the finish. "However, we can only be disappointed as we only ride to win. I was not expecting to be ahead in the final kilometres. I tried my best but I am still sad that I was not able to be closer to obtain a medal".

A professional since 2021, Bjerknes has been recently surrounded by rumours that she may leave her current team, Kommuna Ladies, under negotiations with MKTkom and some other foreign top cycling teams. "This kind of rumours are obviously part of the peloton during these months of the season, of course", Bjerknes declared. "I can only be grateful for Kommuna [Ladies] team, a team which has become one of the best cycling teams in the world, for the chance they gave me and I'm very happy and honoured to be part of the team, which is almost a family to me. However, I do not feel it is the right time to comment on this, as I am only focused now in the time trial race after today.

Bjerknes is expected to participate in the Mundus Games Road Race in the coming days, where she already finished second in the 2021 Mundus Games. "It will not be easy but I will try my best", she added.

Mundus Games: Jugland wins bronze medal in men's football

Jugland's men's football national team achieved their first medal ever in the Mundus Games, defeating Rokkenjima by 2-0 to win the bronze medal.

The match did not witness many chances, but the Juglander defense and attack proved move consistent and accurate against the opposite goal.

Erwyn Seppa opened the score with a powerful header while Christian Baba scored the second goal to complete the Juglander team victory.

The Juglander team was able to achieve their vengeance, as they finished 4th last year after losing against Rokkenjima by 2-1. "We proved ourselves as much more solid team today", Seppa declared.

The women's team was not able to repeat the success, however, as they lost against Kaitaine and finished 4th.

The Juglander delegation won their tenth medal later in the day with three medals in tennis, winning the golden medal in men's and women's doubles as well as a bronze medal in mixed doubles. Iduuna Juul, who paired with Roza Fosse and Yudai Inoue became the first Juglander tennis player to win two medals the same Mundus Games.

Mktvartvelo: Bittersweet results in basketball, as men's team advances to the final

Mktvartvelo's men's basketball team defeated Preoria 78-64 and advanced to the Mundus Games men's final in which they will face the Quintelian team.

National coach Avtandil Revazadse admitted that they faced more opposition from the Preorian team that one could have expected, but praised the mindset and attitude of his players. "There were a few things which did not go our way, but we were able to control the situation throughout the match".

"In a final, there are never favourites", Revazadse declared as the men's team seeks to repeat last year golden medal.

Irakli Balguridze, with 28 points and 12 rebounds, was chosen as MVP of the semifinal.

The men's team may look at the women's semifinal as a cautionary tale, as Mktvartvelo's women's team was defeated by Quintelia by only two points.

"We can only be disappointed", captain Sopho Gorjiani declared. "We lacked the consistency in our play that we have showed in so many matches. There is no time for regret what we failed today, and we'll fight to bring a medal back home".

Mktvartvelo: Religious scholar under criticism

Aka Salukvadze, Professor of Sacred and Ritual Symbology in the Holy College of Martvilisi, has been unexpectedly the focus of a controversy regarding a book published earlier this year.

The book, titled "Through the Blood and the Letter: A View of the Literary Canon", which she edited and was one of the co-authors, was published by the Martvilisi Holy College Press. The book, as scholarly literature aimed to academic readership and students, had not much impact when it was published. However, a few weeks ago, a conservative association issued an official complaint to the Holy College of Martvilisi, regarding the content of one of the chapters, written by Professor Salukvadze.

In the chapter, Salukvadze argued against a literal reading of the Sacred Hymns and other form of religious literature, emphatising the ritual practice of mediation as highest authoritative form and source of spiritual truth, and to the last extent "incompatible to blind adherence to the exact letter of sacred literature", a view that Salukvadze's critics have insisted can only be understood as a violation of the Holy Doctrine of the Order of Simartlea, Mktvartvelo's largest religion.

Following the complaint, Salukvadze's interpretation has received criticism in both academic journals and newspapers. Otor Mikaberidze, a prominent conservative journalist from Akheli Ambebi newspaper did not hesitate to denounce Professor Salukvadze as a "heterodox amateur scholar...whose work is closer to a pseudo-poetic gobbledygook but opposed to the required respect to tradition and common decency", and called for her immediate dismissal from the Holy College of Martvilisi, as Mikaberidze argues that her teaching could only have a pernicious influenced in students and public opinion alike, "creating the confusion that those views were granted official sanction". Other critic went as far as denouncing Salukvadze's analysis as "incitement toward heresy and spiritual corruption".

Professor Aka Salukvadze has not directly responded to the controversy, and she has continued her teaching activities as usual. A former priestess, Salukvadze appeared in the national news earlier this year as she become the first retired priestess to get married in a same-sex religious wedding. Salukvadze left the clergy in 2015, and joined the Holy College of Martvilisi as an assistant professor in 2019. She has published three academic books since then.

The leadership of the Holy College of Martvilisi, a higher education center which is owned and managed by the Order of Simartlea, has responded in an official statement that it will appoint an administrative committee to decide on the official complaint, but it rejected to temporarily suspend Professor Salukvadze as a preventive action as it was demanded.

In a communication with a local newspaper, Salukvadze has denied any conflict with any of her colleagues at the college.

Mktvartvelo: New law to grant access to passport to non-citizens

Mktvartvelo's National Assembly passed the Administrative Register Act, which it is expected to grant the right to have a passport and leave and reenter the country to a large number of non-citizens born in Mktvartvelo's soil.

The legislation will establish a nationwide registry for any non-citizen who can prove being a descendant to anyone living in Mktvartvelo before the promulgation of the Charter of Khisjvari (1911). Those non-citizen who are granted entry in the registry will be granted the right to have issued a passport and leave and reenter the country as any citizen, as well as granted access to employment in a large number of state institutions in which only Mktvartvelian citizens have access so far.

The legislation is aimed to ease the administrative situation of the so-called "Nakhevratsarieli", a large number of non-citizens who were born in Mktvartvelo but who are effectively stateless, lacking citizenship and a number of political and administrative rights even in cases where they are the descendants of several generations of non-citizens born in national soil. It is estimated that there are more than four million of Nakhevratsarieli in Mktvartvelo, and it is expected a large majority could benefit of this legislation.

However, the law will not open a path to citizenship for them, as several civil rights groups have demanded, and therefore there would continue deprived of certain political rights as the right to vote. Descendants of immigrants who arrived to the country in recent decades and who were not granted their nationality of origin of their parents will be also ineligible to the registry and the rights associated with it. Still, some are hopeful that the legislation establishes an antecedent that may be expanded for those who are left behind in the future.

"It is a positive step toward the right decision, but it is not enough", declared Aisha Saqqaf, TAN-BER association spokesperson. "The status-quo is not longer acceptable for those million of people who are part of the social body of the nation by birth, and who contribute every day to society with their work and participation in every field of social and cultural life. A modern nation requires a more fair system without space for discrimination".

Sports: Mktvartvelo's Football League holds meeting before restart of the season

"We can only be, of course, disappointed", Zhuldys Birinseli, the Vice-chairwoman of the Mktvartvelian Professional Football League (MPPL) declared, as the MPPL held their Assembly in Ktsatskuri, about the defeat by men's and women's national teams in the Last Sixteen round in the Mundus Games, the same result than in the previous year. "There is no doubt the players gave everything they had. We are not here to debate the causes of such results, but we are hopeful that there is certain room for improvement and that our players were not able to show their real level yet".

"I am certain that the football federation will give steps in the right direction", Birinseli answered another question. "On our part, our clubs are investing more and more in their youth teams, with at least half of the clubs expanding their facilities in the last year, so I am certain that the results should be coming sooner than later".

The leadership of the MPPL presented the economic results of the Mktvartvelian league in the first six months of the year, as well as informing about the state of negotiations for TV rights for the next five seasons, as current TV contracts would end late this year. Birinseli declared to be optimistic that TV rights will considerably increase clubs revenue. The Assembly also approved two new sponsorship deals signed for the 2024 season by a large majority. "As attendance as viewership increases, and our clubs attract more national and foreign talent, there is room for increasing growth at both quality and economic level", she added.

The men's and women's football leagues in Mktvartvelo are expected to continue next week following their Summer and Mundus Games break.

Brzdmtsveli Ketevan visits Valtheim Mundus Games

Brzdmtsveli Ketevan, head of state of the Unitary State of Mkvartvelo, travelled to Achkaerin to attend the Valtheim Mundus Games for several days.

It was her first official visit abroad since the political crisis caused by a wave of student protests and the subsequent appointment of Prime Minister Brdzeni Kvirkvelia.

She met with Mktvartvelian and Juglander athletes in Valtheim. She also attended a number of Mundus Games events, including basketball, handball, gymnastics and athletics events, between others.

"We can only be proud of our athletes and sportpeople in these games", she declared. "Particularly of those who achieved success in these lands, but also of the effort of everyone. It is not just the medals obtained but the number of athletes who were so close to them that allows to dream even bigger about the future of sports in our nation".

Mundus Games: Basketball gives Mktvartvelo another two medals

Mktvartvelo's men's basketball repeated the success from Azavrelia 2022 and obtained the golden medal in men's basketball. Quintelia was close to surprise as their women's team did but Mktvartvelo finally won by 71-68.

Mktvartvelo was consistently better during the first three quarters, taking a eight-point lead over the Quintelian team. However, that lead evaporated in an increasingly chaotic last quarter, which resulted in a 29-23 favouring Quintelia.

Center Malkhaz Terentishvili was chosen was MVP of the final, with 19 points and seven rebounds. However, it was the accuracy from 3-point range by players like PC Otar Lobzhanidze and SF Irakli Balguridze who kept Mktvartvelo afloat in the last quarter and decided the match.

"It was the toughest match since we started our preparation for the Azavrelia Mundus Games", national coach Avtandil Revazadse declared after the match. "While we should have decided the match earlier, it was our winning mindset which was decisive at the end. I can only be proud of these players which even in moments of weakness they are able to show all their greatness".

Meanwhile, the women's national basketball team defeated Rokkenjima by 72-64 to win the bronze medal in women's basketball.

25-year old Marlena Chilachava, with 15 points and 10 rebounds, was the MVP of the match.

"We came here to win the title, so we can not be as happy as we should", Chilachava declared, "but I'm glad we could give our country at least another medal".

With these two medals as well as with their first ever golden medal in sailing, Mktvartvelo obtained their 47th medal in these Mundus Games, surpassing their Azavrelia 2022 record of 44 medals, although with three fewer golden medals so far.

Sports: Mainio Salminen won third golden medal in Valtheim

Juglander rider Mainio Salminen made history to win for third time the Mundus Games Individual Time Trial in Valtheim.

Salminen was the fastest rider in Valtheim individual time trial by merely three seconds.

"It was, of course, one of the biggest goal of the season to win here, if not the biggest, so I can't be more happy", Salminen declared. "I knew it was not going to be easy, as the time trial was not too technical".

"Still", he continued after a pause as he was interrupted by teammate Lars Aaltonen who came to congratulate him, "I soon felt that I was able to rider faster than we planned, even above my pacing plan. It was going to be close, but I understood after the first intermediate that I had the legs to do it".

"Winning in Azavrelia, so close to home", the 29-year old time trialist continued, "was really special, but winning once again here is something unique. It is a day that I will never forget".

Salminen became the first athlete to win three golden medals for Jugland in the same event. It was the sixth golden medal and the 12th medal for Jugland in these Mundus Games.

Mktvartvelo: Prime Minister addresses possible religious reform in television interview

Brdzeni Kvirkvelia gave his first interview since his appointment of Prime Minister of the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo. The interview was broadcast as part of the political sector of "Bolo Pikrebi", a popular talk show in ERT-1, one of the state-owned television channels in Mktvartvelo.

During the interview, several topics were addressed, including the first months of Kvirkvelia's Premiership, his career in the armed forces, the wave of protests, some of the most recent legislation passed by the parliament as well as the Prime Minister's views on several issues including education, healthcare reform, or foreign policy. For its most part, there were not much surprises on any of these issues, at least not something new that the Prime Minister or the government had not already expressed before the interview.

Indeed, it was only an unexpected topic which offered something about the new moves of the national government, the topic of religious reform. Prime Minister Kvirkvelia declared to be "personally displeased" by any law which is not respected or it is only arbitrarily applied. "When the law is not enforced, it is meaningless", he declared when he was asked about the topic.

"If three million people break the law, we should be willing to send to prison those three million", the Prime Minister explained. "But silently remaining silent, or only enforcing it when the violation is too flagrant". Kvirkvelia, instead, voice his will to introduce a legislation on this issue. Still, he criticized Prime Minister Bidzina Samkharadze's failed religious reform which was vetoed by Brzdmtsveli Ketevan herself. Kvirkvelia promised to address the issue in a "responsible and serious" way, in order to "simplify legislation to make it more efficient and clear, without bringing more division" in society.

Sports: SK Midtenstadt routs AJK to win first KSCh-NSK Cup

SK Midtenstadt became the first winner of the KSCh-NSK Cup, also known as the Women's Intercup, by defeating AJK by 6-1 in Sandberg.

The KSCh-NSK Cup was established under the umbrella of the Mktvartvelo's and Juglander football federations, as a joint tournament for the best four football clubs from Mktvartvelo and Jugland. For that reason, it gathered the 2022 winners of the Mktvartvelo's league and domestic cup, as well as the 2022-2023 winner of the Juglander women's league and Juglander Cup, SK Midtenstadt, with the runner-up, AJK.

While AJK defeated easily the Mktvartvelo league champions by 2-0 in the semifinals, the club from Albrektberg did not prove a big contender against their Juglander rivals.

Despite AJK high pressure during the first minutes,  the first half was dominated in transition by SK Midtenstadt as the team was able to open the score with a stunning strike by Eugenia Martwyn from outside the box. Both teams ended the first half of the match with a clear 3-0 score.

AJK did not surrender, and started the second half with a high pressure and attacks on the wingers, being able to score the 3-1 at the 57 minute. However, it proved to be just an illusion, as SK Midtenstadt would score another goal only six minutes later, as well as two more goals in the last ten minutes of the match.

Eugenia Martwyn, who scored two goals and gave an assist was chosen was the player of the final. "It always feels nice to win a trophy, particularly when you are the first one to win", SK Midtenstadt  Saori Takada declared. "At the end, it is only one match at the beginning of the season. But it gaves us extra energy to start the league with a positive mood".

Mundus Games: Mktvartvelo continued their success in Valtheim 2023

Mktvartvelo's national delegation break the record obtained in the Azavrelia Mundus Games, when Mktvartvelo obtained 44 medals, after they obtained a total of 75 medals, 20 of them gold medals (three more than in Azavrelia). Mktvartvelo also finished 10th in the Mundus Games, an improvement in three positions.

Once again, Mktvartvelo showed their best results in gymnastics, obtaining 17 medals (even if they obtained two medals less than in Azavrelia one year before). Martial arts also showed an unexpected growth from two to ten medals.

Mktvartvelo also continued their reign in men's basketball and handball, where the teams repeated the golden medal they had obtained in Azavrelia. The women's teams were able to repeat a medal even if unable two more golden medals, as the women's basketball team was able to secure a bronze medal while the women's handball team was only one goal away to win the gold.

"We could see that the number of gold medals as well as the total number of medals could have increased by a large number of athletes who faced the best of the world. This doesn't gave us a bittersweet feeling. Rather, the conviction that we can keep growing and obtain a bigger result the next time", a prominent official from the Mktvartvelo All-Sports Confederation declared.

Meanwhile, the Juglander delegation is expected to be received in Albrektberg to show the 31 medals obtained in these Mundus Games. Juglander doubled their number of gold medals, and showed the world their status as a powerhouse in cycling, as more than half of their medals were achieved in that discipline.

Sports: FK Albrektberg wins first football Intercup

FK Albrektberg defeated Mktvartvelo's football league champions Mezgvauri Azavrelia by 3-1 in the Intercup final to win another trophy.

The football Intercup is a joint tournament which gathers the Mktvartvelo's league and domestic cup champions and runners-up as well as the champion of the Juglander elite league and Juglander Cup. The final was held in the city of Sachkumi.

FK Albrektberg had an early lead by the club from Mktvartvelo was able to reduce the difference by a late goal just before the end of the first half. However, Juglander midfielder Hugleikrarr Engelsaas was scored the final 3-1 goal in the minute 66, ending the hopes of the Mktvartvelian champions. FK Albrektberg was able to comfortably defend the result, particularly after a player on the Mktvartvelian side was sent off for double yellow card at the minute 78.

FK Albrektberg president confirmed that, unlike as it is customary with domestic league and cup titles, there will not be a parade to celebrate to title, but the players will show the trophy in the first FK Albrektberg league match next weekend, in which FK Albrektberg will face EMAC Albrektberg in their start of the season.

Mktvartvelo: National Assembly passed religious reform legislation

Mktvartvelo's National Assembly passed the State Reform for Religious Freedom and Social Integration Act by a 354-231 vote. Minister Imeda Tsertsvadze declared to be "highly confident" that the legislation will advance without "significant opposition" in the Council of State before being signed into law by Brzdmtsveli Ketevan.

The legislation will remove most restrictions on religious activity, including the controversial restriction on "aggressive or public proselytism", which imposed sanction and punishment in certain forms of religious propaganda, as well as restrictions of religious and spiritual activity in the public space or involving minors. Prime Minister Brdzeni Kvirkvelia had argued recently that such dispositions had become "unenforceable and arbitrary" and mostly ineffective in the current legal and judiciary system.

Such legislation was seen as "archaic" and a violation of the principles of equality and freedom of religion by a number of religious scholars and activists, particularly those belonging to religious minorities. The legislation will also remove or limit restrictions regarding the building of temples, the registry of religious foundations, and celebrations of religious services during official religious days (even when such religious and spiritual services did not interfere with existing or planned religious activities or services). They have expressed relief of the abolition of such provisions in the criminal and civil codes, although a number of religious organizations have expressed the disappointment that the national government decided to not consult with civil rights and religious organizations during the negotiations before the legislation was introduced into the National Assembly.

Some commentators expressed that the national government seemed too urged to obtain a quick legislative victory in this front, avoiding a real debate and confrontation regarding the content and proposals of the law. A group of MPs, who most of them voted against the law or abstained, declared that it was "a missing chance" for a more inclusive and reasonable reform that avoids creating more division and social tensions. The Order of Simartlea, Mktvartvelo's largest religion, has not openly endorsed or opposed the legislation, even if some religious magistrates and scholars have expressed their opinion, both opposing and supporting, about the legislation.

One of the most controversial clauses of the legislation, however, is the establishment of a national registry of religious and spiritual organizations, which would legally force religious organizations to register in the Ministry of Religious Affairs and submit basic information regarding their employees and volunteers who are actively involved in their religious and administrative activity, including members of the clergy. The same provision also established a requirement to members of the clergy, as well as religious staff or volunteers involved in religious services, ecclesiastical activity, or official rites to have an officially recognized formation in religious or theological studies for those religious organizations which headquarters are not based in the territory of the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo or are found to be "dependent, subsidiary, or any form of declared or official obedience or structured subordination to organizations or states beyond the borders of the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo". A violation of the provision may legally involve a loss of the tax exemption of the organization or the imposition of economic fees, under judiciary review, as well as the suspension of the rights of residency and work of those individuals involved.

The legislation gives the National Directorate of Education, a joint state-private board the right to grant validation and recognition of the required formal and official religious formation, in cooperation with the Ministry of Religious Affairs. The National Directorate of Education already recognizes as such the religious schools and residences, as well as religious sites and religious colleges operated by the Order of Simartlea, but members of religious minorities fear they may not be able to find the same recognition, as the National Directorate of Education has rarely granted such recognition to theological and ecclesiastical degrees from universities and education centers abroad, even in case when there were treaties regarding bilateral education cooperation as they were often not deemed to comply with the required standards of quality and relevance established by education authorities.

"We celebrate the removal of restrictions regarding religious activity", Simon Adamia, a representative from a Christian foundation based in Martvilisi has declared. "However, we are concerned about what such provisions is going to imply in practice. It would be difficult to find many members of churches, both clergy and missionaries, who had access to such official certificates. I was contacted by members of local churches who are afraid if these provisions could threaten them to deportation for their foreign employees...At this moment we can only pray about the situation, as many of our fellow believers and churches are doing right now".

The legislative supporters of the legislation, however, deny any kind of accusation of sectarian motivation regarding those clauses, as the National Directorate of Education currently recognizes theological degrees from the Pyhä Albrekt College in Albrektberg, Jugland, a private college which was founded by the People's Church of Jugland, the largest Christian denomination in Jugland.

Sports: Juglander national team captain joins Mktvartvelian women's football club

After eight years playing in several clubs in East Ardia and Albion, goalkeeper Warina Salin has signed a new contract with Mktvartvelian club FC Tsagedia.

Salin, 36, joined as a free agent, replacing local goalkeeper Tsminda Nemsadze who joined Juglander AJK club last week for a record of a $101,000 transfer.

"I felt it was time to come closer to home", Salin declared. "It is a honour to join this club. They have done things well and it shows. It is also exciting to try this young league for a change. I come with respect and humility, but I am prepared to do my best".

Salin previously played for Juglander clubs such as Stromendalen Naiset, SK Albrektberg, and FK Sandberg before she continued her professional abroad. Salin has also being the Juglander national team captain since 2016, being the third Juglander female player with most international caps. She was called for the last Mundus Games, in which the Juglander national team finished 4th, although this time  she did not play any minute during the tournament.

FC Tsagedia currently heads the Mktvartvelian women's football league with a lead of three points ahead FC Martvilisi with ten matches before the end of the season. A surprising development, as last season FC Tsagedia was fighting for relegation last season. Salin has promised to do her best to continue this dreamy season, in which the team has proved consistent and strong defensively, with only ten goals against in 14 matches. "It will not be easy but I'm prepared", Salin, who had barely minutes in his last two seasons as substitute keeper, added before thanking local fans for all their support and kind messages received in the last hours.

Mktvartvelo: Union representatives to face legal charges

Merab Dekanozishvili, General Secretary of the All-Mktvartvelian Labour Union (SMSK), the second largest union organization in Mktvartvelo, as well as other ten SMSK representatives and other twenty labour and political activist will face legal charges for violation of the national labour code and unlawful alteration of the public order, a court from Ktsatskuri has announced.

Dekanozishvili has denounced the charges as "absurd and a political provocation" as well as "a infringement of union and civil rights", demanding the charges against him and other union representatives. SMSK has also announced that the will leave Permanent Committee for Labour and Social Advancement if they charges were not dropped before twenty days". The unions also announced they will be considering demonstration and even a general strike in order "to defend constitutional and union rights".

Minister of Justice Shalva Metreveli has declared that the national government respects "both the independence of the judiciary and the presumption of innocence" and denied that the government or his ministry had any involvement in this case regarding the December 2022 general strike, which was the first nationwide general strike in Mktvartvelo since 1929, which was followed by other two national strikes during the recent waves of protests.

A national government spokesperson has declared that the government will continue to promote social dialogue but they respect the work of courts and prosecutors. "Nobody can be above the law is a egalitarian principle that we can only agree with. We will wait for further developments in this case with our utmost respect to the judiciary process. We only demand prudence and responsibility by the main social stakeholders", he declared.

Sports: EMAC Albrektberg strikes first

The Juglander Elite League did not start the 2023-2024 season calmly. In their first match, champions FK Albrektberg received EMAC Albrektberg.

FK Albrektberg were expected to be the favourites in the Albrektberg Derby, as they have winner the league title in the previous six seasons and they showed a great performance last week to win the first Intercup trophy against the champions from Mktvartvelo, Mezgvauri Azavrelia. Their rivals, however, have failed to win a trophy since 2017, then when they were still named SK Albrektberg. A change of name that FK Albrektberg fans still like to tease about. Juglander authorities have granted the match a "high risk" in terms of security and public order, although fortunately there were no incidents to regret outside the stadium.

As it happens, expectations and precedent are often meaningless regarding a Derby, and it showed on the field. The match was not too exciting to watch, as there was more tension and competitiveness, that precision and attractive football. Most of the chances of the first half were mostly caused by defensive errors than successful tactics or skillful attacks. And so the first half ended scoreless.

The match was not decided until the 71 minute, when Konrad Mustelin scored the only goal of the match to give EMAC Albrektberg the three points.

Sports: Glory only a few centimeters away in Gowu

Juglander riders Walden Gjeldnes (AABL) and Sygnyr Mydland (Kommuna Ladies) finished second in the men's and women's Gowu Grand Prix, which winners was decided in a small group of riders.

Walden Gjeldness once again showed he can compete with the strongest riders of the peloton, particularly in one-day races, but again as through the season, with the only exception in the Tour of Mktvartvelo, he failed to obtain a win. The victory was decided in a group of five riders, reduced to three in the final kilometre after Hermann Takkala worked to reduce Hermann Müller last attack. However, Elias Iordanu proved the fastest rider of the three to give Naukles a second win in the Mundus Cycling Cup.

In the women's race, the victory was decided in a nine-rider group, in which Daitojin Misato Futagawa was the fastest to win her third Mundus Cycling Cup race this season. Juglander Sygnyr Mydland was second while her teammate Lenza Sverdrup, which had dropped earlier from the group, finished tenth. With only one race to go, only Achkaerinese sprinter Chihaya Lei remains a threat against Futagawa for the trophy.

Mktvartvelo: Black Week arrives to Mktvartvelo

As Mktvartvelo prepares to enter into Ghvinobistve (literally "Month of the Wine"), the 9th month of the year, Brzdmtsveli Ketevan gave the traditional speech on the eve of the Shavikvira festivity, also known as the Black Week, consecrated to the remembrance of the dead, only time of the year believers are allowed to make offerings to the gods without the need of a mediator.

There was an expectation that the Brzdmtsveli may address the recently religious reform passed by the National Assembly as it had officially arrived to the Council of State for its discussion and possible amends, given that she issued a veto previously against another attempt of religious reform passed by the National Assembly during Bidzina Samkharadze's Premiership. However, she did not.

"It is with humility and prudence we approach these days", she declared in her speech, "a state of mind which may continue with us the rest of the year". In her speech she emphasized the national way of life, warned against "division and futile animosity", as well as a veiled recommendation to reinforce national choices over foreign ones. "As we gather with our relatives at dinner, or we pour wine over our deceased funerary shrines", she continued, "as well as a mere realization of the names of the traditions and festivities that gather us together, we can realize that the even the minor things that we enjoy every day, or in special occasions, have existed and surrounded us and our ancestors for thousands of years, while our political tradition, or social issues that sometimes divided us, not too mention a large number of nation-states around the world, are much more young and recent".

The Brzdmtsveli also called citizens to use these days of remembrance and introspection to build bridges toward unity and tolerance with both those close to them and their fellow citizens.

Sports: Tour of Khelvakheli starts with a great challenge

As riders arrive to Valori, when it will start, riders and organizers prepare for the most ambitious start of the Tour of Khelvakheli, one of the most important cycling stage races in Mktvartvelo in women's cycling. For first time ever, the race has been expanded to ten stages, while it has been a four-stage race for most of its history. Organizers of the race has expressed their hopes that the race becomes the most important stage race in women's cycling in the continent, if not the world, aiming to healthy compete with the established Tour of Ardia. For the start, the organizers are satisfied to the attention received and the participation of this special edition, that they hope to be successful enough to continue in the next seasons.

As it has been the norm through its history, the race will take place almost completely through Mktvartvelo central and southern regions, starting in the city of Valori and ending in a mountainous stage in the Khogaria region. "It will be very exciting and a completely different race", incumbent 2022 winner Inga Sigua, who will ride this year as part of the local MKTkom team, declared.

Six Juglander riders will take part in the start, including Sygnyr Mydland, Emma Assersen, and 2023 Tour of Ardia winner Hadewynda Salonen. "We came with a strong team", Kommuna Ladies Salonen declared. "I am already hoping to do my best, whatever my role is determined to be". As usual, Kommuna Ladies will contest the race without a clear leadership, but with a squad aiming at both the general classification and individual stages.

Eter Dzindzichasvili, disappointed for her absence

MKTkom rider Eter Dzindzichasvili, one of the most successful female Mktvartvelian riders in the last seasons, has expressed her disappointment for not being selected for the MKTkom in this coming Tour of Khelvakheli. "I was hopeful to be here since the route was announced", Dzindzichasvili declared, "as I know quite well some of these roads, but I can only accept the decision of the team".

After a great season last year in which Dzindzichasvili showed that she was able to compete with the best riders of the peloton in different terrain, finishing 6th in the Tour of Ardia with one stage win, it has been a rather disappointing season for the Mktvartvelian rider, riddled with crashes and muscular injuries. Her best result was a second place in the Drozapkhulis Grand Prix, while her best result in the Mundus Cycling Cup was a 16th place in the Midvale-Artaxia Classic, quite far from her expectations at the start of the season.

Eter Dzindzichasvili declared to being prepared to change her luck in the two remaining race in which she will participate this season, the Nordheim-Sandberg Classic and, particularly, the Sachkhumi-Zestomi-Sachkhumi race, last Mundus Cycling Cup event this season. "Things did not go exactly as everyone, team, fans, but particularly myself, expected, but I can only look in the future". Despite rumours, she has confirmed that she will continue another season in MKTkom team, as her contract ends in 2024, and she has the confidence of the team leadership, she assured.

Mktvartvelo: Conservative newspaper confirms departure of controversial former deputy director

Goga Kapanadze, a prominent Mktvartvelian journalist, has confirmed that he will be leaving Akheli Ambebi, fourth largest newspaper in Mktvartvelo, after twenty-seven years writing for the newspaper. He was Akheli Ambebi deputy director from 2005 to early 2023, likely the most well-known journalist of that newspaper after Merab Aprasidze, who was editor-in-chief of the newspaper from 1997 to 2022. Kapanadze continued to write daily for the newspaper in the opinion section, which he previously headed, until six months ago, when his column became a weekly one (although he continued to write in his own blog, which is hosted in the newspaper online website).

Kapanadze gained a reputation as an independent conservative opinion writer, which articles could encourage as much debate as uproar and they were known for their sharp prose and controversial opinions, particularly against those he considered enemies. In the last years, former Prime Minister Bidzina Samkharadze turned to be one of his most recurrent targets, a man which Kapanadze described in one article "as the most serious threat that our nation has faced in decade, mostly for his weakness and his delusions, rather than for his malice, which he does not possess".

His announcement of departure coincides with his last controversy three weeks ago. In an article titled "New Television, Old Vices", he harshly criticized Channel 7, a Mktvartvelo's television channel established in 2022, which he described as a "personal vehicles of the Peasant Sisterhood" (which was understood by many as a reference of the prominent Birinseli sisters, who are the main shareholders of the television channel) and called it "Ketevan TV", in a likely reference to Brzdmtsveli Ketevan, causing an uproar in social media. In a message in his blog a week later, Kapanadze assured those who accused them of being against the person or the institution of the head of state "could not be more wrong", but he insisted that he did not feel that his words required further explication. For its part, Gaertianebuli Kaghaldi Inc., the company which own the newspaper, assured that Kapanadze's departure "had been planned and agreed by both sides" since several months ago and it was not caused by "any recent developments". In the statement, although it confirmed that Kapanadze will not continue to work in any of the media owned by the company, as it was previously rumoured, they "express the gratitude for the work of Mr. Kapanadze in the last decades in the newspaper...and wish him the best of luck in his future projects".

It was not, however, that Kapanadze was involved in a controversy. Five months ago, commenting to an interview in which a prominent lawyer proposed a path to citizenship for the so-called Nakhevratsarieli community, the stateless Mktvartvelo-born non-citizens, he declared he was not personally opposed about such a legal path for those who were able to undoubtedly prove their integration and assimilation to the native culture, as he argued that the existence of a "pariah community" is the source of serious social and cultural problems, and it is an stigma for several generations of lawmakers and social reformers. Instead, he proposed the government the establishment an official national program in which the government could pay foreign governments, either their countries of origin or third ones, for their permanent accommodation in exchange of an economic compensation, so those "whose integration was a failure" or "the wider number possible" if "there was not a possible legal path" to citizenship for members of the community, could be legally deported. "It will be costly", Kapanadze argued, "but an effective method of solving a social problem which has become as annoying as serious". The article received visibly criticism by several non-profit and civic organizations, and even threats of litigation against the newspaper, which the journalist assured in his daily blog weeks later that "as usual, led to nowhere".

In an interview, Kapanadze has declared that "sometimes, one must be ready to close a chapter to start a new one" and he surely does so "without a regret of the path that left me today and the words that I have written". He assured he still has "a lot of energy" to "start new projects, whatever they are and wherever they lead me".

Sports: AJK beats SK Midtenstadt to win women's football Supercup

AJK defeated SK Midtenstadt on penalties to win the women's Juglander Supercup after a 1-1 draw in extra time. The Supercup is the final pre-season tournament in which the champions of the Juglander league and cup face each other for the trophy.

SK Midtenstadt were clearly the favourite after they beat AJK by 6-1 in the Intercup final a few weeks ago. However, this time AJK showed a stronger consistency in defense with a 5-2-2-1 formation.

Goalkeeper Tsminda Nemsadze, in her official debut match, became the unexpected hero of the night. Still, the match did not start exactly well for her, as a mistake after a weak shoot by a SK Midtenstadt attacker led to Eugenia Martwyn to score the first goal in the match in the first minutes of the match. SK Midtenstadt had clear changes to score another goal for the next minutes, which probably increased the fear between AJK fans that a similar result than they suffered in the Intercup final could be about to repeat. However, SK Midtenstadt players failed to score another goal during the first half, which ended with that 1-0 score.

AJK surprised SK Midtenstadt with an early goal in the beginning of the second half. SK Midtenstadt had clear chances to score a winning goal, but the lack of effectiveness of their players this time, as well a number of saves by Nemsadze led the match to end with a 1-1 draw. During the extra time, both teams have their chances to score but they failed again to score during the last thirty minutes, leading the trophy to be decided in the penalty knockout.

AJK defeated SK Midtenstadt on penalties by 4-3, with Nemsadze saving one of the penalties, giving AJK their first title since 2018.

"We are happy to give the fans a trophy after this long time", AJK midfielder Funakoshi Yuki midfielder declared. "We did our best and showed that what we saw in the previous match it was not our true level", she added in reference to the Intercup final. "We will do our best so we can win more trophies at the end of the season. We are highly motiviated and we hope that this is our year".

This weekend, AJK and SK Midtenstadt will start the season of the Juglander women's football league, along the other six Juglander teams. "It is disappointing after all the chances we had during the match", SK Midtenstadt Eugenia Martwyn declared, "but there is no time to regret it. I can only think in the next match, as we want to continue to make history with this club".

Former head of state-owned media to join Sakin Media-owned television channel

Journalist and producer Irakli Helimishadze, who resigned last month as Director of ERT, Mktvartvelo's state-owned radio and television network, is set to become the new Deputy Head of Communications of ATI-TV, a private commercial television channel. ATI-TV, which was launched last year, it is owned by Sakin Media. ATI-TV is considered a left-leaning television channel. The hiring of Helimishadze does not exactly come as a surprise, giving that he started his career as journalist in Dazverva, second largest newspaper in Mktvartvelo, which is also owned by Sakin Media.

"We are honoured to welcome Mr. Helimishadze to our family", ATI-TV stated in a public statement, "who during his career has shown a great deal of professionalism and independence. We are certain he will contribute to increase the quality and growth of our television".

Helimishadze headed ERT for about a year, after he was appointed on September 2022. Helimishadze's resignation or dismissal was rumoured for weekend, following the resignation of Prime Minister Bidzina Samkharadze three months ago, during which administration he had been appointed. Helimishadze was replaced by broadcaster and attorney Levan Sharikadze, who headed Tsikhadishe Radio from 2016 to 2020. Tsikhadishe Radio is also a state-owned radio station, although it is operated by Mktvartvelo's Armed Forces, independent from ERT broadcasting network.

Sports: Natela Iludidze wins Tour of Khelvakheli 5th stage

Natela Iludidze won the 5th stage of the Tour of Khelvakheli, giving Mktvartvelo and MKTkom their first stage win in the tour. Iludidze overtook Helmar Johanser and Seo Hye-mi to obtain her first professional cycling win as a professional rider.

Iludidze had joined MKTkom as trainee in 2022, joining the team as a professional rider last October. This season, she had surprised everyone winning the Mktvartvelo National Championship road race and showed a strong performances in the Shinkyo Grand Prix and Lawson Challenge races. "We have a great confidence in her so this win did not surprise us", MKTkom team director declared. "She had showed again she can face the strongest riders two days ago but this win defies our own expectations before the start of the tour".

"We knew well the race and we knew it was not a conventional finish", Natela Iludidze explained. "We believed there would be no time for teams to assemble or launch properly the sprint with the last curve, highly technical, so close to the finish. So I did, with the help of Lela [Mdivani], and I had the legs to create a space with the riders behind and win the stage".

"I couldn't be more happy", the young rider added. "This win was incredible, but we will try to win more stages without forgetting about the general classification, of course". Currently, Mzia Chikadze is MKTkom best placed rider in the general classification, 13th at one minute and thirty-three seconds behind Sammy Lawson.

Mktvartvelo: Religious reform to become law

The Office of Brzdmtsveli Ketevan, head of state of the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo, has confirmed that she will not use her right to veto the State Reform for Religious Freedom and Social Integration Act after it was passed by the Council of State, Mktvartvelo's Upper Chamber of the parliament, by a 74-55 vote.

There was expectations about her decision as she had previously used her right to veto legislation for a previous religious reform passed during Prime Ministeer Bidzina Samkharadze. It is expected that the head of state will sign the legislation into law in the coming days, once the legal period of consideration is officially over.

Several Christian churches and other religious minorities have expressed their concern, as they see that, even if they find positive the removal of certain restrictions included in the reform, the legislation imposed a stricter control of their organization removing their autonomy. A national government spokesperson has rejected such accusations, however, pointing out that it would be absurd to argue any kind of sectarian motivation in the legislation as the law officially recognizes the People's Church of Jugland, a Christian church, with the status of native religion in Mktvartvelo.

Mktvartvelo: Documentary explores reality of arranged marriages

A new acclaimed documentary, "Settling A Future", attempts to bring light to a reality in Mktvartvelo: the existence of arranged marriages. The documentary follows the lives of six families through a period of four years. The documentary follows the arranged marriage and matchmaking process during several months and years, examining the experiences of the families involved and the couples dreams, feelings, and expectations through the process.

It took more than six years to director and producer Tinatin Narimanidze to make this documentary a reality. "It was not easy to convince, particularly families and those involved in the matchmaking process, to trust us due to the concern about the right to privacy, as they feared that it could damage their reputation of their families. However, I am satisfied that most of them were positive about the result". The documentary includes interviews with scholars and activists as well as anonymous citizens and well-known public figures narrating their experience about their matchmaking process. "It was not intent to make a manifesto or political documentary", Narimanidze explained during the premiere in an Azavrelia theatre, "but rather some kind of anthropological treaty, to show life as it is, as naked as possible, showing both bright and opaque sides". She hopes that her work increases debate about some of the issues brought by the documentary, as well as providing a better understanding of this cultural practice in Mktvartvelian society, often leading to misunderstandings and myths about its reality abroad.

More than 80% of marriages registered every year in the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo (data excluding the territory of Jugland) are arranged marriages. It is estimated that the number of arranged marriage if only ethnic Mktvartveli are considered is close to 90% of new marriages. The start of the matchmaking process is led by the female head (sometimes, but not necessarily, the mother or grandmother of the candidate spouse), and it is development, which may last months or even years, also leading female members of their clan (while legal, it is considered socially unacceptable to marry into the same clan) and even local members of the clergy as mediators. Very often, the status of their families is considered as important as the compatibility and prospects of the future spouses. However, the documentary shows that this seem to be more prevalent in upper class families than in the middle class.

According to a recent national survey, around 71% of young Mktvartveli, aged between 18-35 years old, answered that they would rather let their families choose their life partners, than choosing themselves. The divorce rate in Mktvartvelo is consistently low, around 0.02%, which supporters of the system show as one of the main strengths and reasons of the popularity and survival of arranged marriages. The documentary also explores related issues, as the prevalence of prostitution and infidelity in the country (59% of men and 56% have admitted to have slept with at least once with aperson other their spouse after their marriage). Other of the issues that the documentary explores is that the situation of orphans, who often struggle to find a spouse due to the lack of family connections and social networks. For that reason, many female orphans are still encouraged to join religious schools. According to a 2020 study, around 15% of Order of Simartlea priestesses grew up in orphanages when they were a child (although the study was later challenged).

Tinatin Narimanidze added a 10-minute "Epilogue" to the documentary for the premiere, in which the reality of same-sex marriage is explored, through two female couples who married, one through the course of their families and others who did not (only female same-sex marriage is legal in mainland Mktvartvelo), and it is debated the impact on same-sex marriages on this institution. Unlike heterosexual marriages, most of the same-sex marriages registered since the approval of same-sex marriage in Mktvartvelo were not arranged marriage.

Sports: Kommuna Ladies obtains stage win in Tour of Khelvakheli

Seo Hye-mi won the 9th stage of the Tour of Khelvakheli, giving the first stage to Kommuna Ladies rider in this stage tour.

It was, however, a bittersweet day for the Juglander team, as Thora Bjerknes suffered a crash earlier in the race and found herself isolated in a group behind the peloton. Despite the efforts of her teammates Fryda Andersen and Hadewynda Salonen, who led the persecution until exhaustion, Bjerknes group lost several minutes, losing most options to the general classification.

The peloton or main group was reduced to thirty riders, in which the victory was decided in a mass sprint. Seo Hye-mi defeated Ivonette Rubio from Eyrie Racing Club in a close finish, which required confirmation of the photo finish technology. Local rider Natela Iludidze (MKTkom) finished third. After this win, the Kommuna Ladies also took the green jersey as leader of the points classification.

"It was a tough day, and I did not know what was happening behind for the last 30 kms", Seo Hye-mi declared. "I know I could still have options if I was able to be on top at the right moment and follow the right wheel", the Kommuna Ladies rider reflected. "In previous days, I had the full support of the team but I was not able to complete the job. Today, it was the opposite but we were victorious, sometimes the reward comes when the challenge is higher". She obtained her first win this season, despite having been close several times, including two second positions in two Tour of Ardia individual stages earlier this season.

Tsuneko Hijikata strengthened her lead in the general classification as Olivia Bylund (Världens ormar) was also forced to abandon the race with only one stage to go in which the winner of the Tour will be decided.

"I'm still uncertain about what happened", Thora Bjerkness declared as she arrived with still signs on his arms of the crash. "I suddenly found myself on the ground with other riders. It was not an easy day after that. There was a moment when I feel we were going to enter again but we were not able to reduce the gap faster enough. After that, it was becoming tougher and tougher. It was not easy, and without my teammates, I may not be able to finish the stage...Right now, I can only think trying to recover as much as possible, but I don't know for certain what we could expect from tomorrow. I'll try to do my best and end the the tour in a positive way, but it may not be easy. It will be a tough stage and many riders and teams will try to move the race".

Mktvartvelo: Islamic cultural center attacked in western region

The building of the Al-Rayyu Cultural Foundation, an Islamic religious and cultural foundation in the city of Akhal, western Mktvartvelo, suffered a fire. Sirens interrupted the sleep of neighbors, and firefighters fought to put out the fire for about a hour.

Police has confirmed, after reviewing footage from security cameras, that at least two suspects threw incendiary objects against the building before leaving the area. No arrests were made so far, but police confirmed that an investigation was started to find the culprits of the attack.

A spokesperson of the Al-Rayyu Cultural Foundation confirmed that the structure of the building was not seriously damaged, although it suffered important economic damage and, unfortunately, a fire broke up in one of the halls of the building,  where there was an ongoing exhibition, causing the destruction and partial damage of several historical artifacts and original manuscripts. "The loss is irreparable", the spokesperson, "as these were highly valuable documents and ceramics from the 16th century".

The Al-Rayyu Cultural Foundation is a non-profit Islamic foundation, established in the city of Akhal, a cultural foundation aimed to, in their own words, "offer the local communities a space for inter-cultural and inter-religious dialogue, promoting the ideas of tolerance and peace, in order to provide a better understanding of the unique cultural and religious richness of the region". The foundation is named after Abdel ibn Ahmed Al-Rayya, a 16th century scholar and author, mostly known as the author as of the "Book of Chronicles of Mk't'varia", in which he narrates the military campaigns of the Kingdom of Abydos against the Kingdom of Sashuavelo, considered by scholars as one of the most important sources to understand the period. However, some Mktvartvelian nationalists have argued in the past that the naming of the center after Al-Rayyu, who is believed to have served as advisor to a prominent Abydonian military leader of the time, was a "provocation" and an "act of aggression".

The Al-Rayyu Cultural Foundation was founded in 1999, moving to its current location in 2014. The building, besides the archives of the foundation, hosts a library, a museum, a bookshop, as well as hall of conferences. The foundation has decided to suspend their activities for the week, but hopes to return to normality as soon as possible. "We are currently in cooperation with local authorities to help in the investigation and continue with our cultural activities as soon as possible". The spokesperson explained that, although they suffered threats and incidents in the past, such attack was unprecedented. "We're not a political organization and our doors and activities are opened to all, independent of their religious or ethnic background or their political orientation".

Some in the local community have expressed their concern that the attack may be motivated by the recent passing of controversial religious reform by the Mktvartvelo's parliament and government.

The attack was condemned by the Office of Brzdmtsveli Ketevan, who declared that "there is no space in our society toward those who oppose peace and tolerance".

Prime Minister Brdzeni Kvirkvelia has also condemned the attack, warning that "any violation of the law will be investigated and punished without exception".

Tour of Khelvakheli ends with final mountain stage

The organizers of the Tour of Khelvakheli have declared the cycling tour a "strong and magnificent success", as the cycling stage tour ended with a mountain stage in the southwestern region. For first time, the Tour of Khelvakheli was expanded to ten stages. The organizers are convinced that, in the second year of the race at the elite level, the race will be able to compete with the Tour of Ardia in the coming season. "We see it, of course", the Deputy Director of Communications of the company declared, "as a healthy competition, aimed to strengthen women's cycling in the next years. Ours was a risky move but we are proud of the achieved success and the support and passions of the fans".

Tsuneko Hijikata (Higanbana) was able to resist and came as winner of the Tour of Khelvakheli, with Achkaerine Sammy Lawson and Rebeca Sousa from Eyrie Racing Club completing the podium. Kommuna Ladies were active earlier in the stage, with three of the riders joining the breakaway of the day. They were not, however, able to keep the pace when the favourites started to reach the leading group in the breakaway in the final kilometres of the day, with Sygnyr Mydland crossing the finish twenty-three seconds after the winner of the stage, Olga Rehi from Världens ormar.

Kommuna Ladies ended the tour with a stage, won by rider Seo Hye-mi, who also finished sixth in the general classification and also won the points classification. "It is not a bad result", Kommuna Ladies director declared, "although we came with more ambitious goals, obviously. But the riders gave everything and we have to be proud of their effort".

Thora Bjerkness was the Juglander rider best placed in the general classification, as she ended 11th.

Mktvartvelo: National Government to remove restrictions on energy sector

Prime Minister Brdzeni Kvirkvelia has announced several executive and legislative measures aimed to the strengthening of the energy sector. The national government aims to achieve that goal to remove legal barriers for the merging of energy companies.

The measures have been met with mixed reactions and some criticism. Some experts have warned that the measure could lead to increasing concentration in the sector and fear of monopolistic outcomes, as one company, Mtliani Corporation, already enjoys a considerably stronger position over the rest in the sector. The national government spokesperson, however, has assured that the national government believe this measures  could lead to an increase of the competitiveness in the sector.

The measures also aims to boost energy domestic production, the national government has explained. The Prime Minister assured that investment in nuclear energy, in cooperation with the private sector, will continue and it is aimed to be increased and expanded in the coming years. However, the national government plans to further increase the extraction of gas with more additional 160 new licenses on gas production, in order to increase the national supply.

For that goal, the national government plans to remove remaining restrictions on onshore fracking for gas as well as offshore fracking on the Gulf of Safraen. "The combination of these measures will strengthen the national sector as well as improving the supply and offer for consumers, as well as bringing more jobs", the national government spokesperson has declared.

Mktvartvelo: Brzdmtsveli Ketevan faces drop in approval ratings

A new national survey in the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo has showed a considerable decline in the approval ratings of Brzdmtsveli Ketevan, Mktvartvelo's head of state.

The survey indicates that the Brzdmtsveli approval ratings dropped to 59% the lowest since she was elected as head of state. During the first months of her reign, which started in 2021, she had enjoyed approval ratings up to 81%. The current approval ratings are closer to those of Brzdmtsveli Tamaz IV, who had an approval rating of 51%-54% in the last year of his reign.

Experts and political journalists seem to disagree about the causes of this result. However, it is believed that recent political turmoil and wave of protests last Summer had a serious impact. Still, only 4% suggested that the Brzdmtsveli should abdicate, and about 14% agreed that they would have preferred that a different person was elected as Brzdmtsveli in 2021.

The same survey showed a division (54% for and 43% against) about if Brdzeni Kvirkvelia should continued as Prime Minister after the next legislative election, to be held next February. The main reasons for those opposed are the belief that the Prime Minister should have a civilian background and the Prime Minister should be the leader of the largest faction or group in the National Assembly. However, a clear majority of 81% believe that he should continue as Prime Minister until the next legislative election.

Fryda Andersen wins Memorial Merab Djobadze

Fryda Andersen (Kommuna Ladies) won the Memorial Merab Djobadze with a 20-kilometre solo breakway to win by thirteen seconds ahead of Darejan Machaladze (MKTkom).

Herleva Klausen (Sangyo-AD) was third, the first in a group of nine riders which arrived a few seconds after Machaladze.

Andersen had attacked in the main group when the riders were about to enter in the town of Chiaiki. "I was not expecting to go solo", Andersen explained a minute after winning the race. "I thought it was the right time to make a move in order to reduce the group or force a breakaway. However, I realized that no body was on my wheel, and I then thought to myself let's just try". Andersen reached a gap over two minutes during her solo attack. However, the gap was considerably reduced in the final kilometres, as riders behind started to cooperate.

Memorial Merab Djobadze is an one-day continental cycling race held in northern Mktvartvelo. The race has been held since 2014. However, the race was renamed this year in honour of Merab Djobadze, a young rider who died in a road accident on September 2022. Riders stopped after the first five kilometres for 5 minutes of silence as they arrived to a monolith sculpture dedicated to the memory of the deceased rider.

Mktvartvelo: Scholar questions origen of Simartlean religion regarding archaeological site

An article published in a regional academic journal about the recently discovered archaeological site in Nordansk-Hokubuchiiki has increased debate about the importance of the discovery, not merely between scholars but the between the public and local theologians.

Tapani Gorgasali, Assistant Professor of Ancient Material Culture in the University of Albrektberg, is the author of the article titled "Footprints of Ancient Religion: Symbols and Language in Hokubuchilki Archaeological Site". Gorgasali, while not an original member of the archaeological team in charge of the project, he visited the site and offered his expertise, particularly related to his knowledge in Ancient Aranyean Languages, a topic in which he has published several works in the last decade.

In the article, Gorgasali declared the discovery "unprecedented" and "unique", which "will likely both improve and change our understanding of pre-Modern Religion in these lands", he argued in the introduction. Gorgasali argues that "there is no doubt that we are facing a religious site", dedicated to a goddess. She identified the divinity as an earlier version, or a late antecedent, of Dalotsvili Dedopali, one of the main deities according the Order of Simartlea, Mktvartvelo's largest religion. He supports such identification in mentions in inscriptions and tablets found in the site, which the archaeological team identified as "Blessed Queen".

"She was likely venerated as both a deity and monarch", Gorgasali argued. In the inscriptions and some sculptures found, she is depicted as a redhead woman, often naked, and wearing a cape and jewelry which could be identified with luxury, as well some military symbols. In one relief, Gorgasali advances, the deity is holding a snake and a double axe. In one tablet found, she is also identified with a consort, "a likely reference to Okron...or maybe an earlier version of this god". Gorgasali concludes establishing "If one connects all these dots, there is no much room but to establish that this deity was a "Goddess of Fertility and War". He adds that "with the highest probablity" it would be "better to start to understand the symbol of the double axe as an originally war symbol, rather a sacrificial symbol in which animals were killed and offered to the divinity, as the Order of Simartlea has maintained for centuries. "This", the scholar comments, "would be a revolutionary discovery".

If he is right, Gorgasali argues, this would give strenght to the theory that the Jarebupali deity was a later development, likely during the Mtskhetistsikhe Confederation. In the Order of Simartlea, the Dalotsvili Dedopali deity is understood as a mother goddess, the goddess of motherhood and fertility. Gorgasali accepts that, if his theory is right, it may be difficult to explain when, how, and why the war attributes and symbology were separated from the deity, but he declares that further work in the archeological site may add hints or evidence for that research.

The team at the Nordansk-Hokubuchiiki archaeological site has issued a statement declared that "while we respect the work of Professor Gorgasali...such conclusions do not represent the first findings of the archaeological project". The statement also concludes that "it will be highly speculative to compare some of the anecdotal findings, even as highly valuable as they are, with those of different periods". Matthias Vuorela, Professor of Ancient History in the University of Albrektberg also declared in an interview that "the work at the archaeological site may take years, and it is too early to reach any conclusion so far".

The Office of the Order of Simartlea has declined to comment on Professor Gorgasali's allegations.
