Republic of Narthaur elects new president

Baldur Steinnsson was elected the 19th President of the Republic of Narthaur, the largest and more influential member state of the Eyrifjorduric Federation.

Steinnsson received 42.2% of the vote, becoming the president which the lowest support in the popular vote since the 1968 constitutional reform - previously, only one Narthaur's president obtained less than half of the vote, Fannar Erlendursson, when he was elected in 1982 receiving 48.7% of the vote. According to the constitution of the Republic of Narthaur, the president is elected using a two-round system. However, if a candidate gets over 40% of the vote and be 10% ahead of their nearest rival, it is not required to get over 50% of the vote to be elected president in the first round.

The division of the opposition in several candidates has allowed Steinnsson to be elected president. Steinnsson, a former Minister of Security Affairs from 1997 to 1999, campaigned as the National Democratic Party candidate, succeeding as President of the Republic of Narthaur to Lúdvik Gudmuntursson, who was elected president in 2012 as independent candidate, shortly before creating his own political party. Gudmuntursson, who had a limited role during Steinnsson’s campaign, remains as Chairman of the National Democratic Party.

Ólafur Geirrsson, the candidate of the Liberal Democratic Party, was second, receiving 30.1% of the vote, while Ástídur Leifurdottir, who run as an independent candidate, obtained 24.8%. The Federal Democratic Party candidate, Dagur Njallsson, received 14.8% - the worst result for a FDP candidate since 1954.

While the Republic of Narthaur is the largest contributor to the Eyrifjorduric Federation, it is unclear if the election of Baldur Steinnsson will bring unexpected changes in the Federation’s policies.

Grand-Duke Agnar dies

The Grand Duke of Vestland, Agnar Hallbjörn-Snorrisson, has died at the age 67, after almost three decades as sovereign monarch of the Grand-Duchy of Vestland, one of the member states of the Eyrifjorduric Federation.

The Gran-Duke passed away yesterday night surrounded by his family, the Vestland government announced. Grand-Duke Agnar III was hospitalised for a lung infection two weeks ago, and returned home to the Snorrgard Palace "to spend his last days", the palace informed. He was diagnosed with cancer in late 2016.

The Grand-Duke, who avoided being involved in political disputes, had a reputation as a bon-vivant who enjoyed cooking, opera and wine. Nevertheless, he was considered quite charismatic and respected by most of the population in Vestland.

The government of the Grand-Duchy of Vestland has announced that a state funeral will be celebrated in Vestfellbaer. All the members of the Eyrifjorduric Council, and representatives of the other member states of the federation, along a small number of foreign representatives, are expected to attend to the funeral next weekend.

Grand-Duke Agnar is expected to be succeeded by his only daughter, Svanhildur.

2018 Eyrifjorduric Super Cup kick-off

The Eyrifjorduric Super Cup, the main annual football championship between regional teams of the Eyrifjorduric Federation, started yesterday, with Vestland team defeating Nỳttgrund 1-0. In the following match, the derby between federal cities, Midverslund and Tavík teams were unable to score, ending with a 0-0 team.

The format of the Eyrifjorduric Super Cup is simple: each team plays every other team once (making a total of 21 matches), with home ground advantage alternating from year to the next. In case two teams end with the same number of points and wins, ties in the classification are broken by considering the points difference of the teams. The current champion is Narthaurblár, the team from the Republic of Narthaur, which won the 2017 tournament with a full supercup, that is, winning every match in the championship.

Narthaurblár hopes to win their 35th Super Cup, the seventh in the last decade. They will start in the tournament against a team formed by players from Kevada and Tseemeegen ethnicity, which will participate in the tournament for first time since this championship started in 1928.

Baldur Steinnsson inauguration as President of Narthaur is calmly celebrated

Baldur Steinnsson was sworn in as 19th President of the Narthaur Republic, in historic power transfer as, for first time since the 1960s, neither the leaving president nor the president-elect are candidates from either the Federal Democratic Party or the Liberal Democratic Party, the two political parties which had dominated the politics of the Republic of Narthaur since the 1950s. Baldur succeeds President Lúdvik Gudmuntursson, who was elected in 2012 as an independent candidate. Baldur Steinnsson was elected as the official candidate of the National Democratic Party, which was founded by President Lúdvik Gudmuntursson shortly after his win in 2012 presidential election.

President Baldur Steinnsson's speech was relatively short and dry, and it is expected that he will continue many of Lúdvik Gudmuntursson's policies, as many minister under his 2012-2017 administration will remain under President Baldur Steinnsson administration. Baldur Steinnsson himself served as Speaker of the Narthaur parliament and Minister of Home Affairs during Lúdvik Gudmuntursson administration.

Progressive Coalition to confirm veteran official as federal candidate

Kevsiab Yim, a former candidate of the Federal Democratic Party, has surprisingly announced that he will run as candidate for the Progressive Coalition, a left-wing political movement formed by the Social Labour Party and other minor political parties, in the coming federal election.

Yim, 64, was mayor of Keveda from 1993 and 2011, first as an independent candidate and later as a member of the Federal Democratic Party. He had been expected to become a member of the Eyrifjorduric Council in 2013 as a Federal Democratic Party, but the poor result of the Federal Democratic Party in those federal elections, which saw the FDP seats in the federal government reduced from three ministers to just one, avoided such outcome.

He confirmed that he will run to the Senate in the Protectorate of Tvsevdarsvaedy, his local region. An ethnic Tseemtxias, the native minority in the Eyrifjorduric Federation, Yim is likely to be announced candidate of the Eyrifjorduric Council by the Progressive Coalition soon, aimed to become the first member of a left-wing political party in the Eyrifjorduric Council (federal government) since 1973, and the third Tseemtxias minister in the history of the federation.

The Protectorate of Tvsevdarsvaedy elects only one senator to the Upper House, so it is expected to be a tough race despite Kevsiab Yim's popularity in the region. Currently, the Progressive Coalition has no incumbent candidates in the Senate and just four in the National Assembly - all of them candidates from the Social Labour Party.

Princess Svanhildur is crowned as Grand-Duchess of Vestland

Svanhildur Agnarsdóttir, 31, was crowned today as Grand-Duchess of the Grand Duchy of Vestland, one of the member states of the Eyrifjorduric Federation.

Svanhildur, who is the only children of late Grand-Duke Agnar III, was crowned as Grand-Duchess Svanhildur I, becoming the second youngest in the history of Vestland. The coronation ceremony took place in the Cathedral of Vestfellbaer.

Two hours later, the Grand-Duchess addressed one thousand guests, including members of the Eyrifjorduric Council and the Vestland Cabinet, and the Grand-Duchy's legislators in the parliament building in Vestfellbaer. Outlining her new role as monarch, Grand-Duchess Svanhildur honoured his father, who was Grand-Duke of Vestland from 1989 until his death one month ago. Svanildur promised to stand for the values anchored in the constitution and to be fully aware of her duties as sovereign monarch.

The Grand-Duchy of Vestland is the only member state of the Eyrifjorduric Federation headed by a monarch. The Vestland Constitution establishes a constitutional monarchy, so the powers of the sovereign monarch are limited and mostly ceremonial, although he or she has some influence in Vestland's policies. The current Prime Minister of Vestland is Njall Hakónsson, from the Liberal Democratic Party.

Grand-Duchess Svanhildur is married with Steinn Fridriksson, an economic scholar, and has one son, Prince Eyvindur Steinn-Snorrisson.
