The Commonwealth of Lechia, Litva, and Ruthenia (LC: Rzeczpospolita Lechii, Litwy i Rusi, LV: Lechijos, Lietuvos ir Rutenijos sandrauga, RT: Річ Посполита Лехія, Литва та Русь), known simply as Lechia abroad and the Rzeczpospolita at home, is a country located in Eastern Aranye. Bordered by Niš and the Rodinian Sea to the east and Skalvia to the north, its peoples have long inhabited the region, though the Litvanians migrated into what is now modern-day Lechia in the 9th Century. The three main populations of Lechia are the eponymous Lechians, the Litvanians, and the Ruthenians, of which the Lechians and the Ruthenians are the most closely related. The Litvians are the outlier, sharing no easily traceable ancestry with the other peoples of the region and originating in modern-day Skalvia. It has a large economy for its size, coming out at around $2.19 trillion USD, while the GDP per Capita is roughly around $45,000.

HISTORY

NOTE: This section is a brief summary of the nation's history

GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE
Lechia is a country that extends along the Rodinian Coastal Plain from the Tylihul river in the south to the Narew in the north, on the Nisavan border. In the northwest, the Czarny mountains demarcate the border, while much of the southwestern border remains largely open. Topographically speaking, while much of the country's heartland is flat, it features an abundance of lakes, rivers, swamps, hills, beaches, and forests elsewhere, with the Lechian and Litvanian regions being largely wooded as opposed to the almost steppe-like south.

To: Praetor Julius Devaux
From: Prime Minister Suketoshi Heishi

On behalf of the Empire of Daitō, I would like to extend an opportunity for our two nations, once bitter enemies now neighbors on what can certainly be described as good terms, to grow ever closer. In the days of our predecessors, immediately following the war, we sought reconciliation, after all, it is unhealthy to hold a grudge for that long. Likewise, where our forebears once sought reconciliation, I believe we too must work towards growing ever closer, for the sake of future generations so that they may know not war and suffering, but peace and brotherhood with their neighbors. Therefore, I invite you or a representative to pay visit to my residence in Shinkyō for a chance to discuss our shared future going forwards, with an emphasis on fostering greater economic ties between our nations.

Signed,
Suketoshi Heishi, Prime Minister of Daitō

International Organisations / First Conference of the CSSEA
« on: May 30, 2022, 07:38:56 PM »

To the signatories of the Cross Straits Space Exploration Agreement,

It would be my pleasure to invite you, the heads of the government agencies party to the CSSEA, to Shinkyō's Iwaki Aerospace Centre in order participate in the First Annual Conference of the agreement. Over the course of this conference, it is expected that those agencies party to the agreement will discuss plans for both the coming year and beyond, as well as ongoing missions, with a particular focus on building infrastructure for longer-term inhabitation of space and further cooperation in the microgravity environment. A rough agenda for the conference will be left attached to this invitation.
Sincerely,
Haruki Akisada, Director, Daitō National Space Agency
Attachment — Agenda
1.) Welcome Address by Director Akisada.
2.) Declaration of Membership.
3.) Discussion on missions to Nergal.
4.) Discussion on orbital infrastructure development.
5.) Discussion on joint missions to Low Mundus Orbit destinations, old and new.
6.) Discussion on new technology and hardware.
7.) Discussion on Lunar operations.
8.) Discussion on Unmanned missions to Low Mundus Orbit and beyond.
9.) Any other business relating to this conference.
10.) Adjourning.

Iwaki Aerospace Centre, 5/30/2022

Director Akisada had attended many meetings over the course of his decades-long career, many of which had proven consequential to the future of the agency. His first, back when he was Head of the Zenshoen program, was of course very different to this, as it was confined essentially to the higher-ups of his own agency. Now, nearly twenty years later, what was likely to be his last had arrived, and what a way to end it as well. Today was the start of a new series of meetings, the first annual meeting of the signatories to the Cross-Straits Space Exploration Agreement, or CSSEA. He was accompanied by now-Deputy Director Jiro Asagiri[/i], who was set to replace him come July as Director of the agency, as well as various other members of his staff. Now, he was just waiting for his foreign counterparts: Achkaerin's Gary Hale, Tytor's Mackenzie Collins, and Rokkenjima's William Nye. As the first of them arrived, it was time to begin.

END OF THE CIVIL WAR — STATE OF HALYCH DECLARED

Zhytomir — Marshal Oleksiy Lysenko has, following the capture of the city in late December, formally declared the establishment of the State of Halych following the brave struggle of White Forces over the last three years. Vowing on this, Christmas Day of the year 2022, to rebuild the nation stronger than ever, he has indicated that the government of the neighboring "state" of Volhynia, unjustly subjugated by the Daitōjin in 1893, must reconsider their choice to act independently and of the new government in Zhytomir and reenter the fold lest it face the punishment owed to traitorous dogs such as themselves. The Marshal was quick to condemn the red forces, his primary opponents in the civil war, for their eagerness to destroy the former Republic, which he called flawed but salvageable, were it not for the civil war. The Marshal is set to form his government in the coming days.

The White Army of Halych held a military parade in Velykyy knyazʹ Rostyslav Square, Zhytomir, to celebrate the establishment of the State of Halych as the legitimate successor to the Republic. All glory to the victorious Army of Halych, champions of the people, indomitable in spirit! Slava Halychu!

Flag of the State of Halych

СЛАВА ГАЛИЧУ! ГЕРОЯМ СЛАВА!

The State of Halych is the governing body of the lands of the Halychian or Kalieshi Rus'. Officially a Parliamentary Republic (although in practice a military dictatorship), it was established following the Halychian Civil War of 2019 - 2022. Historically a weak state since the 90s, it was dominated by warring factions for three years following the collapse of the Republic. The republic was founded in 1997 following the deposition of the People's Republic of Halych, which came after its own failure to reclaim Volhynia, often blamed on Daitōjin interference. As of the present, Halych has found itself recovering from civil war.

GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE

The geography of Halych is dominated by forests and plains, with the River Vysa running the length of the country into Volhynia. The south of the country is known for its rocky terrain, with a small mountain range, the Kamin', making up part of the southern border with Christopol. On that note, Halych is bordered to the south and west by Christopol, as well as by Tuva and Ellista to the east. Volhynia borders the nation to the north-east, and due north is the Rodinian Sea.

Climate-wise, winters in Halych are known to become quite harsh, with the lowest temperature recorded in the country being at -27 degrees celsius; this was recorded in the city's Capital, Zhytomyr, on January 13th, 1971. On average, the lowest it gets is -13 degrees celsius nationwide, save for the southern-most region, where it rarely gets below freezing.

Economics and Industry / Daitōjin Aerospace Companies
« on: December 19, 2021, 10:53:37 AM »
The Daitōjin Aerospace Industry is dominated by six corporations, those being Aizawa-Shinoda, Negishi, Zayasu, Ochiai, Kasori, and Adler. Of these, the first four are perhaps the best known outside of Daitō, owing in part to their significance during the Great War as well as their early work with airliners. Aizawa, formerly the preeminent aircraft manufacturer prior to 1933, was responsible for the construction of the Empire's first indigenous military aircraft, the Aizawa P1, in 1913. Negishi developed the A3N, which catapulted it into the spotlight in the late 1930s, while Zayasu and Ochiai became known for their bombers and floatplanes. Kasori is a newer company, having been founded in the 1970s, and primarily works on UAVs in the modern day, while Adler, a Styrian-based company, is best known for their work with helicopters.

Note: As per regulations, exports by these companies can only be made to nations that have signed the Uppsala Convention. Furthermore, the states which these companies can export to must have the use of slave labor explicitly prohibited before a sale can be made. Other restrictions may exist depending on the piece of equipment being sold.
(Disclaimer: Due to the nature of the RP and equipment used, many pieces of equipment featured here may appear as partial duplicates of other nations. Nonetheless, these have been adapted for Daitōjin details and the sort, as is similarly seen in the case of Achkaerin and East Moreland.)

Flight Day 1

It had been an eventful day, the first in a voyage that would take Daitō to the moon. Sitting in their Ryū capsule atop one of the most powerful rockets the Empire had ever produced, Uchūnauts Eijiro Ebashi, Hiroki Inagaki, Isao Kitamori, and Taeko Akiyama waited for the final countdown and liftoff of the spacecraft. Only seven hours earlier, the lander had been launched, with it already being on its way to lunar orbit as they waited. It was far from quiet, with radio chatter back and forth from launch control, mission control over on the mainland, and the capsule being ever-present in their ears.
"Hinode, this is Shinkyō, we are go for launch." CAPCOM said over comms. Hinode, the name of the capsule as selected by the crew, translated roughly as Sunrise, with this being effectively the dawn of the Daitōjin lunar exploration program as a whole. "T- 60 seconds and counting."
"Roger, go for launch." Eijiro responded before turning his head over to his crew as the fuel pumps activated. Due to the nature of the suits they wore, they weren't able to turn the helmets with them. "Well, this is it. Lets do our best." He said with a smile before returning his focus to the launch at hand.

A few seconds would pass liftoff drew closer, although for the crew of Ryū M-3, it felt like several minutes. Perhaps they thought about the days to come, of the destination, or maybe just getting back home safe and sound. One may have glanced at the empty spot in the vehicle, a result of it being decided that, for the first landing, only four crewmembers would fly instead of the standard five. Regardless of these thoughts, there was no turning back now. Either they were going to make it, they were going to die, or they were going to abort. No other ways out. Then, over the loop, the final countdown began.

Almost immediately, the capsule began to shake, almost as if the crew were trapped in a single-room building during an earthquake. The clock had begun running, and not long after, they would be clear of the tower. The rest of the launch would largely be uneventful, with the core stage first jettisoning its "skirt"—a recoverable ring carrying the four outboard main engines— before carrying on until it too was jettisoned. Once in orbit and before TLI (trans-lunar injection), the crew would perform checks on the spacecraft and their own health. This would be the final stop where they could realistically abort and be home in a few hours. Any further along and it'd be at least a week before they would be home. Once TLI was complete, they would jettison from the upper stage before transpositioning and docking to the mission module then proceeding to extract it from its adapter.

The voyage had begun.

Ad Astra: Chapter One — Early Days

1945. The War to End All Wars, the Great War, is over. In the aftermath of the conflict, missile technology, once developed to bombard enemy cities, was repurposed for scientific advancement. Using the Shūkei ballistic missile as a sounding rocket, the Imperial Air Forces (IAF) began launching a series of payloads into the upper atmosphere and to the edge of space, performing a number of valuable experiments from their launch site in Western Tsukishima, the former Shiroi Sakyū Missile Range.

A Shūkei Sounding Rocket at Shiroi Shakyū Missile Range

Of course, Daitō was not alone in this endeavor, with many foreign powers also taking part in this early period of space exploration. However, as that is largely not the purview of this series, further detail will prove unnecessary.[1] Indeed, there were early proposals to use a Shūkei as a launch vehicle for a basic capsule in what was known as the Karura proposal. Such a plan was ignored owing to concerns that, at the time, the crew wouldn't be able to safely return to Mundus. However, while no man would fly into space in the late 40s, in 1947 a Shūkei Sounding Rocket would bring a bit of space back to Mundus, with the first photograph of the planet from beyond the atmosphere being released.

The Sky above Tsukishima, Shūkei No.17

As the 40s turned to the 50s, interest in the exploration of spaceflight seemed relegated to a niche community of scientists and military officers, with no truly groundbreaking changes coming for nearly a decade. However, in 1957, everything changed. With the launch of the first ICBM and later in the same year, the first satellite, paranoia gripped many a nation, Daitō included. If a foreign power could launch a satellite into orbit, then it was possible that they could launch nuclear weapons into orbit and leave them, allowing for them to strike at a moment's notice without any forewarning. With a burgeoning nuclear program (later to be cancelled in the early 70s), many within the Empire felt that it was necessary to match this feat. And so, on December 16th, 1957, the Daitō National Space Agency, or DNSA, was born. Their first mission? Put a satellite into orbit, which was no simple task. While the IDAF and IDN had programs to put a satellite into orbit as early as 1956, they were, by the end of 1957, still nearly a year away from completion.

It would be a tough call to make, but in April of 1958, the Navy's design, the Taimatsu, would be selected, with the IDAF's own Mori being put on the backburner until after its launch. And on the 11th of October, 1958, Daitō would join a growing number of nations to put an artificial moon in orbit. It would be joined by Mori-1 in November to much applause by the populace. But while the DNSA had proven itself capable, it had a long way to go before it was no longer hanging in the balance. After all, while from a strategic perspective such feats were important, many in the Diet saw it as an unnecessary expense that the IDAF or IDN could manage better.

Launch of Taimatsu-1, 11 October, 1958

 1. Owing to the fluid nature of the world, it is largely pointless to even try and chronicle such early flights by foreign powers.

White Crane: Part One — Origins

Ever since the cancellation of the UYS program in 1997, there have been efforts to repurpose hardware intended for it. Perhaps none have seen as much contention as the Shirotsuru Orbiter, which was the program's first—and only—orbiter. While it was useful as a base for its replacement, the UHS, it alone was deemed unfit to fly into orbit thanks to its less advanced systems and overall weight. After all, it was, thanks to its 3.6 thousand kilogram higher mass compared to later spacecraft, ill suited for docking with a space station and also for carrying heavier payloads. Not only that, thanks to significant cost overruns, the program was believed unsustainable in the wake of a financial recession in the late 90s, and so, it was put to rest for the time being. Over a decade later, as it sat in a hangar at MFS Artsiv, the world went by, and slowly the program faded from the public eye.

Then, in late 2001, everything changed. The Kyūden IV space station, planned originally as a stopgap for the space program until a larger station could be built, once again caught the public's imagination. At first, it wasn't much, just two KYE-type core modules docked together, but it was enough. The arrival of Expedition II in July of 2002 aboard their Ryū YK spacecraft would see this spotlight brighten further, especially following the release of Uchū Kichi (宇宙基地, Space Station), a documentary detailing Expedition II's mission aboard the station including the arrival of the Kasei Module, in 2003.

Pictured: Kasei Module as seen in Uchū Kichi

In part a result of this new-found interest in itself, the DNSA would start to see its funding slowly but surely increase. By 2006, it had completed the Kyūden IV space station and would begin to look into other projects. It was then that the UYS Program was reexamined. This led, in part, to a series of programs to recycle unused UYS equipment and to fine tune it. One such project that came from this was the UHS spaceplane set to launch in October 2021. It would, at least in the early years, make use of the older Shirotsuru Orbiter for aerodynamic flight tests until the Tenryū Orbiter was ready to take over that role. Another program that came from this was the so-called "UYS Applications Program", which examined how the DNSA could make use of other hardware. It was thanks to that program that the Tenjin CK-22 through 43s would get their current solid rocket motors, while another would begin work to modify the purpose-built LC-17A and B facilities for the UHS program. However, this is not the story of those projects. Rather, it is a story of a space station derived from the UYS launch system's components.

The UYS Station Team had almost immediately come to the conclusion about at least part of the station: It should, in some fashion, incorporate the External Fuel Tank (EFT) into the design, whether it meant disassembling it on orbit and making habitats out of the pieces of it or creating a wet workshop out of it. And so, a design competition began to find the most optimal design for such a station. Some of the following designs were pitched, and the modern program would indeed take elements from many of them.

The Zayasu "Space Facility"
The "Space Facility" concept proposed by the Zayasu Aerospace Company was one of the earliest brought forwards, calling for two launches of a modified UYS/UHS Fuel tank to LMO which would be rendezvoused and berthed to one another. The bottom of each fuel tank would have a built-in habitation module or science lab, with the second launch also carrying solar arrays. It was rejected as a result of fears that it would affect the flight profile of the spacecraft launching it, presumed at the time to be crewed, thus causing further unnecessary risk to it on two separate occasions. It would also require a specially designed system by which the fuel tanks would rendezvous, which was a capability that the UHS Orbiter was likely to lack, not to mention it would only be capable of having a single spacecraft docked at any given time, further limiting its usability.

The Adler "Spacelab"
The Spacelab proposal by Adler is seen by many as one of three early "ancestors" of the Shirotsuru Space Station, using a hull similar to the UYS and UHS orbiters as a base for space station, which would see two additional modules attached to a docking port in what would've been its hull. It would also see the attachment of two truss segments near the engine block as well as a telescope and solar arrays at the top of the fuel tank. The Hydrogen and Oxygen tanks would've been converted into both habitats and laboratories for the crew. It would have two docking ports, one for a UHS Orbiter and one for any other visiting vessel to dock with. However, the means by which supplies carried aboard the UHS would enter the station, that being a design often referred to as the "Scissor Lift" by members of the project thanks to its shape, proved to be its downfall. This would require extensive modifications to the UHS orbiter in order to lift a Multipurpose Logistics Module to its docking port, modifications the UHS team was unwilling to make as it would seriously limit the given orbiter's normal capabilities.

The Kitagawa Orbiter-derived Space Station, Proposal I
The Orbiter-derived Space Station was one of the most seriously considered designs for the station by the DNSA, even though it lacked the incorporation of the External Fuel Tank into the design as mandated by the competition. However, it would see extensive modifications to the UYS orbiter Shirotsuru upon the completion of its atmospheric flight tests in the UHS program and the addition of Five large modules to the station, with the first launching on the orbiter. Due to its failure, however, to make use of the EFT in the design, Kitagawa Technologies would be asked to revise the design, leading to the next design.

Kitagawa Orbiter-derived Space Station, Proposal II

Proposal II/III Intertank Crew Tubes

Proposal III

Space Station Shirotsuru (Note: Proposed Zayasu-manufactured Emergency Crew Return Vehicles docked)

Eventually, the UYS Station Team would settle on a modification of the Kitagawa Technologies design, one which would include elements of the Adler Spacelab proposal. It is this design that is scheduled for launch in 2022 and will see multiple flights starting in the weeks immediately after its launch in order to outfit it for permanent habitation. If it is successful, it will prove the viability of similar designs, opening up an entirely new way to live in space. Space Station Shirotsuru will, in the coming years, serve as a base camp for expeditions beyond low Mundus orbit to the moon and beyond.

Vignettes / Lifetimes of Change (Historical Vignettes set from 1891 - 2011)

Lifetimes of Change

"Lifetimes of Change" is a project which seeks to cast a light on the period of Mundus's History from 1891 to 2011, not from the perspective of great men and of nations as a whole, but of the common man. Of their struggles, of how technology, politics, and socio-economic forces shaped their lives in this era. It seeks not to generalize, but to offer a window into the lives of what is, by many of us, a forgotten era. Here, anyone can write their own stories following the lives of the humble farmer all the way to the highest noble in their marble palace and everything between. What it is not, however, is a story of right or wrong. Not usually, anyways.

For those who may struggle to make a post, I would perhaps recommend that you start your character's posts with a point early in their life, whether that be as early as the 1890s or as late the 2000s and anywhere in between before moving along the timeline. For the sake of those making these posts, I will periodically update this page with categories for their characters written up for this wit the hope of making it easier to follow. As a side note, while it is not a requirement, it would always be neat to see photos from this time period, perhaps as a way of capturing a specific feeling for that post.

With that being said, let us take a step back and remember the past.

Vignettes / To Control an Empire... (Disregard this)
« on: August 06, 2021, 12:21:34 PM »
Shinkyō--
10 June, 2021--
1630 Hours--

The atmosphere of the room was one that seemed frozen in the moment. A large number of personnel of the Imperial Military had taken the time to watch His Imperial Majesty's speech on global denuclearization, and yet now, it had turned so very, very wrong. Hidetoshi Fukuda, known by his friends as Hide and by his comrades as Fukuda-Shōsa, was among them. To think that the very heart of the Empire was attacked...
"...At this time, we cannot be certain of the fate of His Lordship, the Emperor Emeritus. We do know, however, that Prime Minister..."

The anchor seemed sad, in a way. Understandably so, given the nation's reverence for the position. Hell, even Hide felt some sorrow, but there was more... Trepidation, perhaps. He needed to know whether His Imperial Majesty was still alive, a sentiment that was undoubtedly shared by others in the room. Even now, many were undoubtedly thinking about who could be responsible for this travesty. A former Emperor and a Prime Minister... Hide had an idea as to who it could be. Then, he got a call, one he had been anticipating for several minutes now. So, he would step out of the room and find a nice, secluded area to talk, away from prying eyes.

When this was done, he would answer the call; The number was unfamiliar but he knew exactly who it was.
"Yomi Yomi Yomi." The voice said; Hide knew exactly what this meant upon hearing it. The plan had failed. Their main mark was still alive.
"Shit. What's your status, Ijima-chūi?" Hide asked in a hushed tone; outside, he could hear the news about the Emperor's survival on the television and the collective sigh of relief of the crowd gathered around it.
"I'm currently on my way out of the gate district. Ducked into an alley to give you the call, but... The Emperor's still alive. Targets Bravo and Foxtrot are KIA, but Charlie through Echo weren't present."
"Alright... Well, once you get out of dodge, I'll see what we can do about making sure you don't get caught. You destroy the documents you had at your holdout?"
"Yeah, for the most part. All they should get are docs that point to... what was that organization Fukushi-Taishō mentioned?"
"The RAC? Yeah, I'm sure they'll fall for it. It won't hurt that they'll... claim responsibility for it." Hide replied.
"What makes you so sure about that? Wouldn't regicide, attempted or otherwise, just make their situation worse?" Ijima asked.
"Fukushi-Taishō's already handled it. Gave them an... incentive to do it, from what I know."
"Kinda suspicious, huh. Well, I'd absolutely love to chat, but I'm supposed to be getting out of here, so... Be seeing you, Fukuda-Shōsa."
"And you, Ijima. Good luck." Hide said before hanging up. Their original plan had failed, but he was certain they would pull through. And with an Emperor who had witnessed such an attack still living, he could be enticed to do their bidding after all...

...Perhaps this would work to their favor after all.

Sporting Hub / Mundus Games 2021 - Arashkai
« on: July 20, 2021, 07:27:18 AM »

The day of the opening ceremony had, at long last, arrived. Tens of thousands from across Arashkai and other nations had gathered in Ikan to the host nation's largest stadium, the Ikan National Arena, which had reached it's maximum capacity nearly an hour before the ceremony was to begin. There were, of course, millions more who were tuning in from around Mundus as the sun was beginning to set, and with it, anticipation for what was to be the biggest event of the year had begun to rise ever-higher.

Then, an announcement was made, first in English and then in the native language, Arashin, saying "Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome the athletes of the Ikan 2021 Mundus Games." before the first team would enter, that being the team of the hosting nation, Arashkai. The team would enter under two flags, the recently-adopted flag and the older, red-and-white one, the latter of which being carried by a notable face, the Emperor himself (who had qualified to compete earlier in the year). Soon after, the next team, the Achkaerinese team, would enter, having been the nation which founded the games, before the rest of the teams would enter in alphabetical order.

On screens across the world, the footage would, once the various teams had entered, change from that of the stadium to a video of a scroll, one detailing the history of Arashkai, or as the Arashin call it, Sokoku, from it's legendary founding to the modern day; its artwork is in a traditional style. However, it would soon focus on a single section, that of the legendary first Emperor of the Arashin, Keimei, who is claimed to have been descended from a kami. Then, in but a moment, a part of the scroll would begin to come to life, that being a depiction of a dragon, Ryūjin, who is said to guard the nation's coasts. Along the coast it travels, watching as time passes and the Empire begins to rise out of the Kitami and Ashina plains, the brief rule of the Lords of Ishikari, and the complete unification of the nation by the Heiwa emperor. At that point, it is joined by another figure, a white fox representing the goddess Inari, as the land blossoms into spring. The two continue their journey for some time before stopping at another scene, one of chaos and pain. For a time, Ryūjin appears to turn its head in shame before being greeted by a man, one whose form appears in part a mix of the god Takemikazuchi and the Tōitsu Emperor, reflecting his believed status as a mortal incarnation of the deity. They follow him as the scene progresses, eventually reaching the end of the warring states period, at which point the deity transforms into a dove and joins the group, signifying its ability to bring peace in times of war. The group would continue on its journey for some time, reaching the first Ardo-Arashin war and the enthronement of the Keiyo Emperor, where they are joined by a final deity, the god Susanoo-no-Mikoto (often portrayed as a personification of the Empire) as he prepares to strike down the eight-headed serpent Yamata no Orochi, a clear parallel to the long, arduous struggle for survival that Arashkai faced during the Great War, though at the last moment, he relents, offering instead a hand to the wounded beast, representing the process of reconciliation between the two nations. And then, as they near the edge of the scroll, the screens turn dark the Mon (seal) of the Imperial Clan is projected on the middle of the field before the tone of a Horagi (conch trumpet) is heard, calling attention to the edge of the stadium where, as though emerging from the scroll itself, the figures seen before enter the stadium in a display both of elaborate costume and puppetry, Ryūjin leading the way, as various other, similar displays enter from other parts of the stadium, representing the natural beauty of the nation. After a few minutes, the performance would end and the next phase of the ceremony would begin.

Another announcement would be said as the flags of Arashkai would be carried to two flagpoles near the left and right sides of the arena, carried by hand-picked members of the Imperial guard in their traditional attire.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, please stand for the National Anthem of the Empire of Arashkai, performed by the Ikan Band Choir." the announcer said, after which the National Anthem, the "Patriotic March", was played as the flags were raised. Not long afterwards, the Games flame would be lit in it's cauldron, after which yet another announcement was made, saying "Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome Chancellor Sachio Himekawa of Arashkai."

The chancellor would walk up to a podium overlooking the stadium, where he would make a brief speech on the games.
"Honored guests, I wish to extend my personal thanks to you on behalf of the Imperial Government and His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Go-Tenji. Tonight, as we celebrate the beginning of this most wonderous occasion, we look back on the history of the games and forwards to their future. Last year, the games were hosted jointly by the nations of Tamora and the Selucid Emirate, a momentous occasion as it marked the first time the games were shared between those nations. There were, of course, those who protested this decision, but whether or not they were justified in these protestations, they gave hope to many that even those who are most unlikely to achieve their hopes and dreams can still do so, they just need to stand up and make their position heard. This year, we celebrate this hope that even in our darkest hour, such as our nation following the attacks last month, we can still achieve great things. We have all come together in spite of these attacks to say that we are not afraid, that we will face the future with renewed vigour, and that no matter the challenges we face, we will endure. With that, it is my greatest pleasure to announce on the behalf of the people and government of the Empire of Arashkai, as well as the International Mundus Games Committee, that the 2021 Mundus Games have begun! May fortune favor the bold!"

And with that, 2,000 drones would rise into the sky, creating a most spectacular light show, first of the planet with the locations of the various Mundus Games highlighted, then various scenes of the nation, though naturally in a somewhat more simplistic form due to the medium, after which they would form the logo of the games. With the logo unveiled in the sky, fireworks would shoot into the sky, though for safety concerns they would be kept away from the display. And so, the Mundus Games had begun.

TV Shows / Kasan: Voyage from Vrashe
« on: March 12, 2021, 08:35:29 AM »
Kasan: Voyage from Vrashe is a documentary following the crew of the SS Kites, a modern recreation of an ancient Vrashain (a region in Ikhan and formerly dominant state before the Empire) Diplomatic ship known as a "Kasan". While many parts of it are indeed filmed in cooperation with foreign governments, much of the trip itself has been recorded by the crew.

The Crew itself is comprised of Erel Kisat, Berai Shiram, Vira Halasi, Arkan Kavan, and Esha Varin (as well as other members of the crew, of course), all of whom have experience in sailing, though to varying degrees. The plan is to travel along trade routes used by Arashin sailors of the late-Pentarchical (750 - 1043 CE) era would've used, both confirmed and hypothetical. Before proceeding further after this, bios of the aforementioned crew will be released (posted) to the public.

Vignettes / To the Last Breath
« on: January 18, 2021, 02:49:04 AM »
From 1914 to 1945, Mundus was plunged into the darkness of the Great War. No nation was truly spared the consequences of the conflict, whether they were a combatant or not. Ikhan was no different, being in open conflict with the Ardian Empire and her allies thrice throughout this period. This is the story of one of these conflicts, as told through the eyes of someone who viewed it firsthand.

There have been many stories throughout the history of Daitō that have been told, and many more that haven't. Some which should be spoken, and others that should not. Nonetheless, they are all important, for they are but scenes in the great story of Daitō as a whole. These are some of these stories.

« on: October 19, 2020, 06:09:54 AM »
This thread shall be used henceforth to catalogue the various rulers of the Arashin, from the Pentarchical era up until the modern day. It should be noted that the regnal number of the Emperors of Ikhan (having formerly been the kings of Misra) were reset with the formation of the Empire. Please note that while the posts may occasionally not be in order, the index will be in ascending order by the years that they reigned. Monarchs of the states other than Misra will not appear in this list save for the rulers of the short-lived "Empire of Khushai". Please also note that the cataloguing of these rulers may stop at any time and be moved to the factbook instead.

Diplomacy and Events / An Abdication and an Enthronement
« on: August 21, 2020, 06:52:37 AM »
To whom it may concern,

With the coming abdication of His Imperial Majesty, you are hereby invited to attend the ceremony as well as the enthronement of his son, Crown Prince Arkan, as the new Emperor of the Arashin. Of course, if matters of a diplomatic sort are brought forth during this period, then the necessary accommodations can and will be made. Otherwise, meetings with the new Emperor will be permitted after the Enthronement ceremony has been completed.

Of course, housing for any and all honored dignitaries who may attend the event and the festivities the day afterwards shall be provided, with any special accommodations for a specific dignitary needing to be brought up beforehand so as to ensure that no incidents occur. Should there be any questions, they may be raised and the Imperial Household Agency will attempt to answer it as soon as it can.

Attached is a message from His Imperial Majesty:
Quote
Honored Guests,

I recognize that the last few decades have left Ikhan isolated from the rest of the world, during which time we spent reaping the benefits of our watchful peace. But in these times, it has become clear, now more than ever, that we must take an active role in global affairs. That is why I wish to personally invite you to this ceremony, a testament to the restored openness of our nation to foreign trade and to prevent injutsice from further spreading it's claws throughout the world. There are, of course, threats to peace across the globe, but only together can we preserve the lasting peace that has blessed us since the end of the Great War.

With my abdication, I shall pass the torch to my son, the Crown Prince of Ikhan, recognizing in part my own inability due to ill health and a failure to adapt to the ever-changing political climate of the globe. Already, while I was hospitalized following the attempt on my life, he has proven a capable leader of the nation and as a diplomat. Effective as of the 28th of August, he unofficially shall take the throne shortly following my own abdication. The ceremony enthroning him will be at 1:00 PM, with my own abdication taking place at 11:00 AM.

Regardless of any preexisting rivalries, prejudices, or outstanding issues, I nonetheless wish to invite you to the Imperial Palace to attend the ceremonies.
Sincerely,
Esik Vahram ve Sherkoz, Emperor of the Arashin
(Attached is the Imperial Sigil)

Once again, those who have received this message, both from Ikhan and beyond, have hereby been invited to attend the Abdication of Emperor Esik I and the Enthronement of the new Emperor.

Vignettes / The Dragon's Throne
« on: August 17, 2020, 05:46:41 AM »
The Great Citadel of Ikan, built originally in the days of Arkan I, has long been the primary residence of the rulers of Ikhan. Though it has seen extensive modification and rebuilding (especially after an earthquake in the 18th century), it remains among the most recognizable landmarks within the city. The district around it has, since years long passed, also served as a residence for the Khatai (Dukes) and Khovai (Counts) of the Arashin nobility. Though their power was largely broken, they continue to hold sway over Ikhani politics, with many now serving within the Imperial Senate. These are their stories, and those of the many other residents of the district, as well as the Imperial Family who nominally rule the Empire.

The Tale of the Crown Prince

A gentle breeze swept through the district, calm and cool for a late-summer afternoon. Within the ancient halls of the Imperial Palace, of course, it was rather busy. There were many changes coming up, for by the end of the month, a new Emperor would rule. Yet for now, Arkan was "just" the Crown Prince. Sure, he had served as his father's regent due to his own incapability to serve in such a fashion after the attempt on his life a few months prior, but... it wasn't the same. Nothing would, for the day was coming soon. Already, the grand hall was prepared for the day and the palace grounds were nearly prepared as well... The world seemed to go by faster than he could've expected... After all, he was but an infant when his father came to the throne, so he couldn't remember the same being done, let alone when the Emperor was still alive.

Arkan entered the Great Hall, one of but a few parts of the palace to survive intact since before the founding of not the Second Empire, but the Empire of Khorai I as well. A thousand years of history... A myriad of faces must've graced it with their presence in years long-since gone. The throne, surrounded by curtains, was ready for him, though the day was weeks away. Instead, he stopped at a shrine in the open-air chamber, wherein a suit of armor rested. Of course, he knew who it had belonged to... His most legendary of ancestors, Arkan I... Arkan the Great, as he was known to time.
"Ancestral spirit whose name echoes through time, I ask that you be my guide." Arkan bowed deeply as a sign of reverence for his legendary ancestor. "Show me how best to lead our people in my reign." He said before returning to a standing position.
"I'm sure you'll do fine..." A voice— His brother's— said from the entrance. "I mean, it isn't like you've got much to do-" Ikos was cut off mid-sentence, though it was clear he likely expected so much.
"Other than preside over the Senate, perform duties for the State as a diplomat, attend ceremonies, make speeches every few months, not get shot... Yeah, not too much, sure." Arkan sighed, following it up with "I... I just want to do what's best for the Empire, you know that." as he looked out on the gardens in front of the room.
"And you're gonna do that by... Praying to a suit of armor?" Ikos said in jest, trying to cheer him up. "Doesn't that seem, like, super desperate?"
"Sure, sure, after all, I'm gonna need all the help I can get for the 28th." Arkan pointed out, slightly amused by it. "Iko, I want you to know... I appreciate the help you've been in the last few months... Getting ready for this and all." He said with a nod.
"Don't forget sis. She's also helped." Ikos reminded him.
"And Misko, yes." Arkan nodded in agreement. "But still... Thank you." He said before walking off, somewhat encouraged, though still nervous.

Daitō celebrates Armed Forces Day
Greetings, dear viewers, and welcome to a special broadcast by DHK! Today is, as you may or may not know, the 133rd anniversary of the Battle of Kokura, ending the Tottori Rebellion. We go now to our attachι in Shinkyō, Ichiro Asahi, who is covering the day's festivities for us. Over to you, Ichiro.

I: "Thanks Jiro. Anyways, as you can see, for the most part, the area around the palatial square has gone silent in preparation for the festivities. To our left and right" the reporter pointed to both sides for a moment before continuing "we have members of the Imperial Guard performing crowd control and performing their ceremonial functions as normal." He would finish before saying "I must say, today is a momentous occasion, as is often the case, although in particular due to it featuring troops from the Republic of Volhynia and our own sons and daughters, returned from a peacekeeping operation as its neighbor wages a civil war most cruel. What was that? Oh, alright, well, we're being asked to stop speaking for the time being." after which, he would go silent.

The sound of bells would ring out throughout the area. Once the last toll of the bells faded, the Imperial Music Corps would begin playing the National Anthem, "Umi Yukaba", as Crown Prince Eijiro, in full dress uniform, greeted his father, the Emperor, as well as Field Marshal Okimoto Esashi before giving a speech to the troops. Upon finishing, the Music Corps would begin playing a new song, the March of the Imperial Guards, as a group of soldiers made their way down the square, the flags of the Empire hoisted aloft for all to see. After a few minutes, when this too had come to an end, as jets flew overhead, Marshal Esashi would get in an automobile and begin his inspection of the troops. As he went down the line, things seemed normal, at least, until...

*Bang*

Two shots rang out in the square, followed almost immediately by the screams of panicked civilians. Almost on queue, some of the guards would rush to secure the area, all the while medical staff immediately jumped into action. The Emperor had been shot, two bullets piercing his chest, only barely missing his heart. A pair of guards would tackle the shooter and detain him, all the while two others rushed to get the rest of the Imperial Family out of the area and to a more secure location.
E: "I-I-I... By the kami... His Majesty... The Emperor's been shot!" Ichiro would exclaim, all the while an officer ordered for his subordinates to "Seize those cameras and end the broadcast!" as the town rapidly ground to a halt. The broadcast abruptly ends, television screens across the empire changing to the Imperial flag at night with the National anthem playing before suddenly cutting out.
