Atlas Recovery
« on: January 11, 2022, 03:40:40 AM »
One Week After the Aperture Ball

Jordan Rayne sat at his desk, looking over more of the recent satellite photos of the Atlas crash site. These were higher quality than the one's he had at the Ball, and they showed the top capsule shaped module scattered into pieces over a 4 mile cone. It'd be hard to narrow down an exact position on the flight recorder and computer, might take awhile. The Captain's face flashed through his head, he had screwed up last time, got too focused on work and missed his chance with her. This was a second chance at that, if he got stationed with her again that is. He shook his head, clearing her face away, focusing back on his work. He turned to his computer and began typing up a message to the email he had gotten from Gary Hale.

Spoiler: show
To Fleet Admiral David Jackson,

I received this email from ASA Director Gary Hale after he got into contact with you last Friday evening. I know he already told you about my request but I felt that it would be more professional for such a request to come straight from me. I am requesting your permission to allow me to use one of your vessels to reach the crash site of the Atlas Space Capsule, the debris of which has landed in your waters about 6 miles off shore. I will supervise this entire mission on site and will need permission to use the ship to launch multiple Submersible UAVs to sort through the wreckage in order to locate the flight recorder and computer of the capsule. This could take many weeks and I want to make sure you know that my government will cover all costs for this mission, including all running costs for said ship. I look forward to your response eagerly.

V/r,
Jordan Rayne
Lord Minister of Space and Aeronautics

Fleet Admiral David Jackson was very much the architect of Achkaerin's navy, smart and calm. He spent his days reading reports, giving updates to the relevant authorities, attending briefings, doing paperwork and spending time with family. As he stood looking out of his office window there was a knock on the door "Come." he said, the door opened and in stepped Captain Yuki Tyler who looked a little nervous, this was perceptually for her the equivalent of being summoned to the headmasters office but she wasn't aware that she'd done anything wrong.

"Captain Tyler." David said "You're familiar with Jordan Rayne?"
"I am." Yuki said blushing slightly
"He's asking for an Achkaerinese vessel to help locate where the debris of the Atlas rocket in particular the flight controller is" David said "You have the history with him, so does your crew, are you happy to do it?"
"Sounds like we need CORAL help." Yuki said "But yes I'll do it."
"Six miles off shore." David said
"Aye sir." Yuki said
"I'll set it up." David said, he'd wait until Yuki left before sending confirmation to Jordan.

Jordan Rayne stepped into the VH-25, the government helicopter that Evelyn has made mandatory for all official trips from the Palace. He had already taken it down to Isen City to prep for his trip out to sea. This one would likely be longer than the last one and he needed to make sure he had everything he'd need for a multiple week trip working out of the office. Now the 25 was flying quickly over the Azure Sea, westward towards Achkaerin waters. Around 2 hours into the flight he saw it come into view in the distance, the INS Sharingan, Captain Tyler's ships, glorious and majestic. He smiled to himself as the 25 began to slow, then entering an orbit around the ship.

"INS Sharingan, this is V92-06 carrying Lord Minister Jordan Rayne of Revana, requesting permission to land and come aboard." Jordan heard the pilot say over the radio.

"Permission granted, welcome aboard." Came the response in the headset and Jordan felt it as the Helicopter began to lower toward the pad at the back of the ship. After a few moments Jordan stepped out onto the deck, the 25 spinning back up and departing behind him. Unlike the last trip here, he was a lot more casual, wearing fairly comfortable but still professional clothes rather than the suit he was wearing last time. He followed his escort into the ship.

The INS Sharingan wasn't travelling all that quickly, it was a fairly routine voyage for the crew of the destroyer. Yuki was on the bridge standing at what the Achkaerinese military called 'the chessboard' it was basically a table with a touch screen display and computer built into the top of it, with Jordan aboard ship she turned her attention to the next matter she had to think about "CORAL eta?" she asked
"Ten minutes." came the reply
"Once CORAL's aboard ship have their team come up." Yuki said smiling a little as her XO Commander Beckett stepped onto the bridge
"Mr Rayne Captain." Beckett said

Yuki turned around and looked at Jordan "You don't call, you don't write, I'm starting to think it takes Revana losing some space tech to see you." she said

Jordan smiled at the floor, ashamed to look at the captain. He glanced up at her with a sheepish grin.

"I'm so sorry about that, I just got so caught up in work and everything, and I'm really bad at this, and... " He started to ramble before he stopped and took a breath and looked directly into her eyes. "I am really sorry Ms. Tyler, if you'd let me, I'd like a chance to try and make it up to you."

He straightened, awaiting the retaliation, if there was going to be one, glancing at Beckett who just basically gave him a look that said "Don't look at me, this is your mess."

"On this bridge Mr Rayne." Yuki said "It's Captain Tyler." she was about to continue when the bridge went into full swing.
"CORAL arriving skipper." one of the officers said
"Very well." Yuki said
"That's the Centre of Oceanic Research And Learning." Beckett said "They have a fair bit of decent equipment that might come in handy here. Downside is we end up towing a small docking berth behind us so it'll slow us down, but we stand a better chance of success."
"Commander make sure our guests join us as soon as they can." Yuki said
"Aye Captain." Beckett said

About a good twenty minutes later, stepping onto the bridge of the ship were Matthew Finn and Emma Sullivan, after the introductions had been made Yuki turned to Jordan "Mr Rayne would you be so kind as to fill us in?" she said

"Of course, Captain" Jordan said, drawing out the last word. If she was going to play games with him, he'd gladly play along. He set the folder he'd been carrying down on the edge of the chessboard, pulling out multiple copies of his reports and handing them to the two CORAL members, Tyler, and Beckett.

"So the long and short of it is, We are looking for the Guidance computer of the booster, and the Flight Recorder off of the Atlas simulated capsule module." He said as he tossed two pictures into the middle, showing each of the parts. "They should be fairly easy to identify, the only issue being that the explosion caused the wreckage to be scattered over a 4 mile cone shaped area nearby. While not an overly massive area, the large amount of pieces to go through will complicate things."

He pointed to the page that showed the search site and slid another copy to the middle, circling the top, widest section of the cone.

"Given direction of travel it is likely the both pieces would be in this region, however, there's no real telling whether the piece were thrown in strange ways after the incident, which means that the entire area isn't ruled out, it's just a fairly decent place to start." He finished, looking up at those gathered and nodding, finishing on the captain, looking eyes with her.

Yuki, without taking her eyes off Jordan, pressed some buttons on the chessboard and brought up the map and then overlaid Jordan's cone before bringing up one more thing on the display "Welcome to the roots." Yuki said "A series of interconnected ocean trenches, we call them the roots because of theological associations with the Tree of Life. But right now be more concerned by the fact that what we're looking for may well have slipped down there." she glanced at the CORAL pair "What did you bring?"
"Four tempests and a deep sea sub." Matthew said
"And we have two helicopters." Yuki said "Search the areas that aren't in the trenches vicinity first, have UUV's on standby for collection."
"We'll go wide." Emma said "And work our way in. We've got range and speed."
"Mr Rayne can we interest you in a ride?" Matthew said

"Trust me." Yuki said a knowing smile on her face "You'll really regret passing up a ride in a Tempest."

Jordan sighed as he eyes the map of the roots. Of course it had to be even more difficult, why would anything ever be simple. He glanced at Yuki then looked over to Matthew. This was going to force him into his biggest fear, but he wasn't going to show it in front of her, so he nodded.

"Not exactly sure what a Tempest is but I'm down, let's go." He said.

"Right this way." Matthew said leading Jordan back through the ship to the helipad at the stern where what was probably best deescribed as a slightly odd pontoon was being towed, connected to the ship by a temporary gangway waiting on the pontoon were the final two members of the CORAL team were waiting first Matthew's brother Gary and then Anna McKay, at the far end of this pontoon was a research submarine and sat, two on each side were the Tempests, once the introductions were made Matthew nodded "Ok we go wide in the search area first, mark finds and the Sharingan uses their helicopters to fish them out, cover the shallows with the tempests first and then we'll send the UUV's down into the roots to see what of the Atlas is down there." he said "Mr Rayne you're riding with Anna."

"Right this way." Anna said leading Jordan to a tempest that was made up to look like a dolphin, she waited while he got into the backseat before getting into the pilot seat. "I'm all set." she said over the radio
"Ok let's do it." Matthew said "Keep radio's open."

Jordan slowly climbed into the Tempest, freezing for a moment as he looked into the water and half stepping back out before finally letting out a deep breath and sitting down in the back seat. He looked straight ahead and gripped whatever he could reach to act as a handle.

"So umm, how fast do they go? How deep?" He said, doing his best but completely failing to sound calm behind Anna.

"We can't go that deep in these things." Anna said as she slowly turned up the engine "As for speed on the surface we can go forty seven knots, below it we can go twenty one knots." She flicked on the radio "You getting me Matt?"
"Yeah I'm reading you." Matthew answered
"I'll call when I find something." Anna said, she took the Tempest under the water "Camera on, lights down." she smiled as the beauty of the underwater world became apparent "Ok so going off your map some of it is potentially in this area."

"Can't go deep? Good. That's good." Jordan said, as he tried to admire the view outside of the craft. It was beautiful, if one could get passed the inherit dangers.

He looked down at the small copy of the map he had brought. "Ummm... yeah there's a few scatters of debris around here, some fairly recognizable stuff too, which is good, that means the ship didn't get too destroyed from the explosion or the collision with the water." He said as he eyed a piece of one of the inner tanks from the second stage as they went past, a few fishes already moving in to turn it into a home.

"Not much of an explosion then." Anna said "It's a little eerie." she had to smile as she guided the craft around one of the many coral reefs her eyes wide open and alert, then the light reflected off of something. "What was that?" she brought the craft around for a closer look.

"A little is a bit of an understatement." Jordan said with a chuckle as he eyed the piece that had reflected light, which immediately caused him to perk up. "Internal gyroscope from the top ring of the second stage, there would be 8 of them, along with 4 at the bottom and the RCS on the capsule they're used to orient the craft in zero-g. The interesting thing about it is where it's from on the craft as this piece would be only a meter, maybe 2, from the guidance computer for the booster, which is one of our targets. Let's see if this leads to something."

He trailed of that last part as he looked around near the piece, looking for more parts from that area, both excited and a bit saddened given the faster they found the parts, the sooner he'd have to leave, and the less time he'd have with the Captain.

"We got something." Anna said over her radio "Internal components which Mr Rayne says were located near the booster guidance computer."
"Copy whereabouts are you?" Matthew asked over the radio
"About twenty metres east of Aussa." Anna said "Seventy west of Saltine."
"On our way." Matthew said

Anna smiled wryly "The Aussa is a relatively shallow ocean trench, the Saltine is the deepest and longest of the root trenches, so it's pretty much what we feared." she said "If this is ground zero then it's likely what we're after has got into the roots, on the plus side as far as this booster guidance computer goes if it's in this area it's more likely to be in Aussa so we should be able to see a light reflection or something."

Jordan grunted a bit as he looked around, looking for any sign of light around them and in the trench below, his uneasiness worsening as they got closer to it.

"I hope it's easy to spot. I have a bad feeling the flight recorder is going to be in the Saltine, so finding the GC will make things as lot ea...." He himself off, as he noticed an object sitting on a shelf about 10 meters below the top of the trench.

The object was a quarter of the top ring of the booster. Attached to the fragment was another of the internal gyroscopes and beside it, the guidance computer, intact and taunting. The piece sat on the edge of the shelf, balancing with the risk of falling at any moment, like out of the most cliched movie ever.

"Well that's one piece down." He said, pointing at it. "Now let's see if it makes it easy to grab."

"Got eyes on the guidance computer." Anna said over the radio "A few metres down in Aussa it's precarious on a ledge. Attached to a few other components."
"Keep eyes on it." Matthew said "Me and Emma will dive down and retrieve."
"Copy." Anna said "Be as fast as you can it could go at any second."
"We'll try. " Matthew said

Anna sighed as she hung up "The tempests aren't designed for retrieval so they're going to get diving gear and try to retrieve it that way," she said "Hopefully it's easy to do."

After a few minutes, Jordan watched as Matthew and Emma descended in front of them towards the wreckage below.

"Hey Matthew, I'd recommend detaching the computer from the rest and just trying to bring it up alone. Would be a lot easier." He said over the radio. "Should be 22 bolts holding it to the mounting bracket."

As they approached the real size of everything became more apparent, the piece of the bulkhead the computer was attached to being nearly as long as Matthew was tall and almost just as wide. "Just let them get this, make it easy and then I can focus on what's really important." Jordan thought to himself as he glanced back up in the direction of the Destroyer.

To say this was business as usual for Matthew and Emma would have been wildly inaccurate. They weren't specifically trained to do this, but that said they did have the skills to pull it off, Matthew found himself holding the computer while Emma cut through the bolts one by one.
"How's it looking?" Anna asked over the radio
"Five down fifteen to go." Emma said
"We're good for oxygen." Matthew said
"Remember don't chase it if it falls." Anna said
"We know." Matthew said as Emma continued to cut through the bolts.
"Almost there." Emma said "Ok that's it."
"We're heading top side." Matthew said

"Right behind you." Anna said steering the tempest up towards the surface.

As soon as the Tempest was docked and open, Jordan thanked and bowed to Anna and rushed over to where Matthew and Emma were hauling the computer up onto the deck with a few others, the weight having increased just a bit as soon as it was above water. Jordan grabbed hold of it and helped the last bit. As soon as it was in hand, Jordan and one of the other crew members carried it towards a flat spot on the Sharingan's deck where a tarp had been spread out. Most of the parts that were found would be left here for a short amount of time to allow them to dry while Jordan took the most important parts to a workstation to work on.

He pulled out a small multi electronics screwdriver that he always had on him next to a pen and pencil, and took off two smaller covers on the side of the computer, exposing two small black rectangular blocks. After unplugging the blocks and grabbing them he look towards the nearest crew member.

"Has the Captain set anywhere aside that I can work on getting any information from these?" He asked holding up the two blocks.

Yuki was still on the bridge, looking at the 'chessboard' her eyes boring into the word Salthine, getting the first piece had been child's play but if anything had fallen into that deep trench then it was going to be a little trickier. They had the necessary equipment aboard to handle that sort of search, then her radio crackled.

"Helipad to Captain." the voice said "Mr Rayne would like to know where he can work on this salvage."
"Put him in the helicopter hangar." Yuki said "Plenty of space there, just remind him not to get distracted looking at the helicopter."

"Yes boss." the crewman said before looking at Jordan "We've got space for you in the helicopter hangar right this way."

Jordan chuckled and motioned to the crewman, asking if he could use the radio. After getting it, he followed him into the hanger.

"I don't get distracted by helicopters, just.... other things, Captain." He said, putting emphasis on the last few words. "If you're not too busy, I should have something from these drives soon and I can tell you all about these things here in say 30 minutes, if you can make it down here." He began setting up a spot on a work bench nobody seemed to be using as he handed the radio back to the crewman and thanked him for all of his help.

After a few minutes he had the SSDs taken apart on a static pad, drying out as he coaxed one into powering up on his laptop. Strings of numbers and code began streaming by on the screen as the data on the drive was downloaded and unencrypted. Jordan spent the next 15 minutes pouring over the translated data which should be identical to the other SSD, reading through each logged event from the launch:
......Launch Command Detected.....
......Launch Confirmation Received......
......Gravity Turn Initiated......
......T-20s to Max-Q......
......Abnormal Gyroscopic Anomaly Detected......
......Compensating for Anomaly......
......Anomaly Reaching Threat Level Red......
......Loss of Signal......
......Attempting to Reacquire Signal......
......Sudden Deceleration Detected......

Beside all of the math, charts, and other breakdowns, the event log honestly had nothing of note that was not already known by Jordan. It did however give a more accurate heading from the time the shimmy threw the ship off course to the explosion. Pluging this new data into his algorithm that was estimating the location of the Flight Recorder, he groaned and laid his head down onto the workbench, a position he stayed in for the next 10 minutes.

Yuki walked into the hangar, two cups of coffee in her hand, she'd always been told she walked in a very light footed way so walking up on the unsuspecting Jordan was child's play. She'd spent the intervening time going over the charts and theorising how to do this if what they were looking for were in various different locations. She placed a coffee in front of Jordan, just loudly enough to get him to start.

"Get that down you." Yuki said perching on the edge of the workbench "And I'm still a little mad at you so no homemade cookies." there was a momentary giggle as Jordan pouted a little, Yuki sipped her coffee and smiled "So what does all this salvage tell you? Apart from Revana needs to stop losing space things so you can come and see me."

Jordan sipped the coffee and sighed dramatically.

"Well maybe I can get you to make me some cookies while I'm here, because it's looking like I'll be here awhile." He said, smiling despite himself because he actually liked the idea of being here longer, if only for one reason. He turned the computer towards her showing the newly mapped search area. "It's not guaranteed, but feeding in the new data from the computer is basically telling me that the Flight Recorder is in this region of the Saltine."

He sighed again a looked up at her, taking another drink and shrugged.

Yuki bit her lip as she looked at the new search area "If it's south of this point then it's simple to get." she tapped the map "There's a cliff edge drop north of that that makes that part of the Saltine incredibly deep to the point where we wouldn't be able to get a person down there easily and that's most of the search area. But you see here where the trench splits off into three?" she tapped the screen "We call it 'the well' it's a deep hole in the deepest part of the Saltine, we've never put anything down there. You got any way of narrowing this down or do I just send the kids back out in those Tempests?"

Jordan smiled as she bit her lip, something he thought was one of the cutest things someone could do, looking at her as she described the layout and only snapping back to attention when she asked her question.

"What?... Oh yeah, I can try to get some more data from this computer but honestly for now the best way is to be send the Tempests back out and use them to scan the shallower areas." He pointed out specific areas in the cone of debris that lied in the Saltine. "If a pattern could be created in the shape of the debris, it could very well narrow down our search area even more. That'd probably be the best way, though let's just say it how it is, knowing our luck, it's going to be on the very bottom of the well."

He chuckled and downed the rest of his coffee, looking at Yuki and shrugging.

Yuki took her radio from her belt "Captain to XO." she said
"Yes boss?" Commander Beckett answered
"Send the Tempests back out swing up from south to north, let's eliminate everything up to and including the false flat." Yuki said
"Will do." Beckett said "Anything else?"
"Once the tempests are out put us right over the well." Yuki said
"You don't..." Beckett said
"It's in the search area commander." Yuki said, she cut the channel and sighed "If it's in the well get ready for a whole load of fun."
