Under Crimson Skies
« on: February 07, 2023, 12:07:03 AM »
Background
For nearly eighty years, the skies and waters of the Rokkenjiman Sea have been the site of a long-lasting dispute between the Empire of Daitō and first the Federal Republic and later First Empire of Rokkenjima. At the heart of this dispute, though the conflict has dormant since the end of the Second Patriotic War, is a pair of island chains, the Tokara and Satsunan Islands. It was hoped, with Daitō's accession to the Cross-Straits Treaty Organization in 2020, that this dispute would, ultimately be resolved, however, following Daitō withdrawing from the organization in 2022, those hopes have appeared dashed. Now, with the appointment of Prime Minister Sadazane Konishi and the election of Premier Charles Ofdensen, nationalistic firebrands in their respective nations, it is now possible that the long-standing dispute is soon to come to a head.
Rokkenjiman Sea, 77.03 km SSW of Tokara, Tokara Islands
06 Feb, 2023
Early Morning

It is a cold morning on the Rokkenjiman sea, not far from the maritime borders of the Empire of Daitō and the First Empire of Rokkenjima set in 1945. It is a border which neither side formally recognizes, both of whom lay claim to the entirety of the strategically valuable island chain which makes up the tail end of the Strait of Austrana, and thus it, alongside the Satsunan Islands further west, grant control over major shipping routes through the Rokkenjiman Sea. At around 0430 Hours, a Daitōjin Q-6 Akugyo maritime patrol aircraft, "Akawashi 304", had taken off from NAS Awara on the mainland as part of ongoing trials involving the IDN Taihō roughly 150 kilometers to the southwest. Aboard the Taihō, an element of VF-111, the "Spearpoints", was preparing to take off in order to perform CAP duties as part of the exercises underway. Said element, comprising of two fighters—Spear 102 and Spear 105—flown by Cmdr. Genta "Sparks" Saeki and Lt. Hirokuni "Hiro" Fukura, took off Taihō at 0535 Hours and began heading north-east towards the islands, accompanied, albeit further back, by an E-2 Senbōkyō AEW&C aircraft designated "Byakko" from VAW-28.

A few hours later, at 0700, as Akawashi 304 continues its patrol and the Spear element begins to approach the airspace, Byakko detects two unidentified contacts coming from the northeast. They are heading towards Akawashi 304.
«Akawashi 304, buster northwest immediately, bearing 350.» "Byakko" transmitted to the lone Q-6.
«Roger, wilco.» the pilot of the aircraft replied before diving in order to pick up speed before fleeing the area, heading north. His aircraft, while equipped with an array of countermeasures, would not stand a genuine chance if attacked.
With Akawashi 304 on its way out, Byakko's mission director turned his attention to the radar contact and to the Spear element. «102, 105, fast-movers inbound, BRAA; 50 for twenty-two at angels 18, flanking. Spear, you are cleared for cutoff.»
«105, climbing to angels 22.» Answered Lt. Fukura as he pulled back on the stick, raising his aircraft's altitude to 4,000 feet over 102 and adopting a fluid two formation. As far as either pilot or their RIOs know, this is going to be a normal intercept, the sort of thing they practiced in Sipura, and with any luck, that would be all this would amount to.

The two RK80 fighters, operating from Imperial Air Base Southkeep, maintained their trajectory. Premier Ofdensen had made clear that the Tokara and Satsunan Islands were Rokkenjiman, brought into existence along with Azukishima Isle, a gift to Mundus from the All-Mother herself. Many had hoped that with the Anselmo Restoration that Empress Saisei would finally bring some resolution to the Tokara and Satsunan Question, yet she had chosen appeasement over the just liberation of the island chains, a day which proved to never come under Saisei, Evanthe or even now, Shizukesa. While it was true they were operating without the sanction of Chrysanthemum Throne the message that the Anselmos had grown weak in confronting foreign threats had grown in some ranks of the Imperial Rokkenjiman Armed Forces, thus this most risky of missions.

Eliminating interference from the Grand Marshal had been paramount; hence the timing as Rowe happened to be occupied at the moment. The two Rokkenjiman pilots soon found their focus upon two aircraft, with the RK80s accelerating as they approached Akawashi 304. While in similar past instances a wide berth would be given to the aircraft of Daitō this time went much different. The first Rokkenjiman aircraft would pass within just 25 feet of the nose of Akawashi 304 whilst the second would chance fate even further, at just 19 feet. Increasing the bluster of this act, the second pilot would also raise her middle finger even if the opposing pilot might not see it.

Soon the telephone lines would be ringing at Imperial High Command and the two pilots knew that their time here would be short, thus it was paramount to squeeze as much as they could out of those fleeting, most precious moments.

Within moments, thanks to the work of the lumbering Q-6's co-pilot, SLt. Riki Uekawa, the aircraft would be identified, and before long, the pair of J-7s would be on their way to assist their intercepted comrade.
   «Akawashi 304 reporting two Flints[1], bearing 350 for about 18,000 feet.» the Sub-Lieutenant said over the radio.
«Roger, 102, 105 turning, bearing 350 from bulls.» Cmdr. Saeki responded before saying, over the same encrypted channel, "Hey, Hiro, what say you pull out the script we used back in Sipura?"
"That one?" "Hiro"—Hirokuni Fukura—replied as the two aircraft flew, slowly approaching the impromptu formation. With a sigh, he said "Fine. Just a few."

The next few minutes would be rather tense as the element from VF-111, their tails marked with the rising sun, made their way to assist Akawashi 304. It seemed almost laughable, sending a pair of aircraft which, in appearance, seemed straight from the cold war against a pair of the most modern aircraft currently in service, but as they were the closest element and the situation was dire, they had no choice. Neither pilots and RIOs were too concerned, after all, it was the right thing to do, and heavens willing, they would come out of it alive. Eventually, with the trio of aircraft in sight, "102" would carefully bring itself "alongside" the second RK-80, though giving more than enough clearance from the Q-6. Spear 105 would remain above them, watching and waiting in case further action was necessary.
«Spear 102 is visual, aircraft are at approximately 25 feet off starboard wing and 19 feet of port.» Saeki reported over the radio as his RIO, Lt. Goro Tanimura, took a moment to capture an image of the formation. It was going to be important to document it for the debrief, if they made it back, anyways.
"The hell kind of intercept is that?" He asked as he watched on.
«Bogeys are designated threats, weapons safe.» Byakko responded to Saeki. «Get them to peel off.»
«Roger.» Hiro said over the secured line before, with the flick of a switch, opening an open channel to the Rokkenjiman aircraft. «Attention, Rokkenjiman aircraft. You have entered an Air Defense Identification Zone of the Empire of Daitō, established in keeping with the provisions of the Fair Seas Concordat, without a verified flight plan and are being intercepted by two armed Air Defense Fighters. If you hear this transmission, acknowledge, pull away from the Q-6 aircraft you are currently close to, and turn northeast immediately.»

The message transmitted would, if they did not respond, be repeated for the time being. However, if they did not respond, then it would become... complicated.

 1. "Flint" is the reporting name for the RK-80

"I'm tired of this game," Charles, who had been monitoring the situation from the Residence of the Premier said with a sigh. "Those islands are Rokkenjiman, and they dare invoke the Fair Seas Concordat? Send Akawashi 304 into the waters, then deal with the mosquitos. We're short on time, so make the most of these moments."

Within moments of Charles making his decision one of the Rokkenjiman aircraft maneuvered quickly and took up a position behind Akawashi 304, whilst the other would be joined by five RK80-Ns dispatched from IRN Kurogitsune, escorted by her carrier group in the Rokkenjima Sea. "Attention Daitojin aircraft, piss off," the pilot of the RK80 which had taken up station behind Akawashi 304 said as he fired two AIM-9 Sidewinders at the plane, banking to prepare operations against the J-7s. Meanwhile, the RK80-Ns readied their AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles to engage the remaining targets.

As these events transpired an irritated Grand Marshal Rowe activated the hotline between Rokkenjiman and Daitojin military commands whilst giving orders. "The assets operating in the Rokkenjiman Sea are operating without the sanction of the Crown and Imperial High Command, I rue any loss of life due to this exchange. As we speak I have designated these assets as rogue and have initiated procedures which will render them removed from combat capability, as I maintain control of our ICON cluster. Do what you must to defend yourselves, but I have assured that Rokkenjiman naval assets will not be capable of providing further support for these operations. On behalf of the Empress I convey our sincere interests in bringing this situation to an abrupt resolution and to limit any potential for the loss of life on both sides. For our part I have ordered the Kitsune to deploy her aircraft to engage these rogue assets and request your cooperation alongside their operations."

As the transmission from Rowe concluded those aboard the Kurogitsune, and her escorts, would find controls unresponsive, their courses changing to return to Rokkenjiman waters as ICON commands overrode local commands. "Old man has a few tricks," Captain Imai Hiroshi of the Kurogitsune sighed. "Inform our aircraft that they'll soon be flying blindly, do what damage is possible but their return is mandated. At least give the Daitojin a bloody nose." Meanwhile RK80-Ns from the Kitsune took off to engage those aircraft designated as rogue assets.

«This is 105, Akawashi 304 has been fired upon!» Fukura screamed over the radio as his RIO, alongside his counterpart in Spear 102, activated the aircraft's radars. With their Rules of Engagement met, the battle was on; now was the time to put these rabid dogs down.
"Hiro, you take the guy that shot down 304. The wingman's mine." Saeki said calmly over the radar.
"Roger." Fukura said, looking over to the enemy aircraft as he pulled on the stick to remain behind his quarry; via his helmet-mounted cueing system, he was able to achieve radar lock without pointing the aircraft itself at the enemy. With a pull on the trigger, he said Fox-2! Fox-2!" He called out as, with a plume of smoke and a trail of fire, a missile, an AIM-9X, broke free, tracking towards its target. Less than a second later, as it approached the RK80-N's tail, it exploded, downing the first "Flint".
Meanwhile, for Cmdr. Saeki, the situation was somewhat different. The wingman, evidently more skilled than the lead, was forcing him into a battle of maneuver. Even with a lock, at the present angle, it would be a much, much more difficult shot to make, and being a life-or-death situation, there was no room for mistake. Finally, as the Rokkenjiman aircraft made a hard turn to starboard, Saeki followed, pulling six Gs in the process before firing a missile off. Initially, the sidewinder did not track towards the target, instead flying past it. Saeki then switched to guns, but as he did this, the missile finally located the Flint, pulling forty-five G turn towards it before impacting near its cockpit. "Fox-2 kill for Sparks, Fox-2 kill." He reported.
«102, 105, you are cleared to engage. Pass from the ship.» Byakko finally reported, giving "clearance" for the two aircraft to engage, though given the situation, it was expected that they had already done so.
«And this is 102, 105. Two enemy kills.» Saeki replied. In total, the engagement, from the moment the Rokkenjiman aircraft downed Akawashi 304 to the end, had lasted for two minutes and fifty-six seconds. But though this phase of the fight was done, they knew the battle was only beginning.
Meanwhile...

The General Headquarters of the Imperial Daitōjin Armed Forces was abuzz with activity as reports came in about the engagement in the Rokkenjiman Sea. Even during the Cold War, though there had been intercepts over the Tokara Islands, not a single shot had been fired in anger between the two countries. This was different. As far as Eijirō was concerned, as he listened in via a conference-call from the Palace, this was a repeat of the engagement which had brought Daitōjin aircraft into the war in Toshikawa. But this time, the opposing force was sending forces, ostensibly to aid Daitō in mopping up rogue forces, but no matter how he looked at it, he felt chills go down his back. How could they be certain that this wasn't a cover for an invasion, not just of the remaining Tokara Islands, but of Daitō as a whole?
"...Taihō is en-route to return to Kyūre, while Utsugi is expecting to enter the Dauntel this evening..." Admiral Satoru Hazuki said, speaking from the GHQ. Could they trust Rowe? How could they?
"What of Tytor? Any idea if they're moving to assist Rokkenjima?" One of a number of officers asked a few minutes later.
"It's... too soon to tell. The fact remains though, we have to treat any Rokkenjiman movements going forwards with suspicion." Marshal Esashi responded. "Unfortunately, your Majesty-" He said with a sigh. "-I fear that Rokkenjima has just fired the first shot of the Second Greater East Ardian War. Unless it is your command, we must respond accordingly."
"In that case... I'm going to need to consult with my advisors... That and speak with the Achkaerinese, seeing as they undoubtedly have a better idea of what is going on."

The red phone sat on a desk might be a movie metaphor but in East Moreland there was in fact a version of it, only in keeping with the decor of King's David office it wasn't red, it was a lovely shade of silver. It was one of two that sat on his desk, the one on the left a vintage black phone and the right identical in design just sprayed silver. The left one rang several times a day allowing the King to speak with a variety of aides, ministers and those put on by his Head of Household Quinn Germaine. The silver phone though only five people had access to, the heads of each of the Armed Forces, the head of Red Legion and the Head of National Intelligence. It rang rarely and David thought that was good. He was always nervous to pick it up and today was no different. "Hello" he said timidly wondering what news it brought.

"Your Majesty its Mason Franklin" the Head of Intelligence probably meant something less worrying than the military being on the line. "I'm sorry to inform you that about five minutes ago we begin picking up chatter about Rokkenjiman aircraft taking down a Daito maritime patrol ship. Moments later we got a retaliation. We're still crunching numbers and investigating but it would appear that their spat over the island has gone off."

"We talking war or just hot tempers?" David asked.

"Hard to say at the moment, we've a few theories ranging from miscommunications to worst case people acting on Ofdensen's say so. We know he had fingers in Rokkenjima's intelligence agency who knows how far his tentacles go"

"Quinn" David yelled through to his outer office where Quinn worked. She appeared in the Kings office almost immediatly having heard the phone ring and knowing it had to have been the "special" phone as it bypassed her. She suspected she'd be called in and now with a notepad in one hand and a pen in the other she waited. "Get the military chiefs in, I think Redferns in town if so get him here, also get the current officer of the day in." Quinn nodded, still writing in her pad, and headed towards the door. David meanwhile went back to his call. "You hear that?" He asked Mason who confirmed he had, "Excellent get someone over here, looks like its a session in the underground volcano lair.

It took an hour to get everyone assembled, Redfern was away in Dal Raitha preparing for their referendum but otherwise everyone he had asked for was here. "Any updates" the King asked.

"A few" Mason Franklin spun out packs of information to each of those around the room. "We've been able to confirm the number and types shot down on both sides, we've also seen the Super-Eye satellite tasked to view the area so we expect more detail to follow." Each person took time to read the folder before the King tossed his angrily back at the table.

"I'm proposing the following and anyone tell me why its a bad idea when I'm done." David began. "Rokkenjima are either spoiling for a fight, which is bad news, or there is an impending internal conflict, probably between crown and Ofdensen. Either way I'm expecting trouble as Ofdenson has said some rather worrying things about us. Therefore I want Rokkenjima treated as potentially hostile. I want actual guards on their embassy and rapid response team on Embassy Row. All East Moreland assets globally are to assume Rokkenjiman assets are hostile but not to fire unless clearly either fired upon or about to be. Anything else."

"I'd suggest getting the Maori on the phone, if Ofdensen is anti CNN then they're the closest. Maybe send a squadron or two out there to support them if needed."    Air Commodore Edward Briggs addressed the room.

"Anything else" David checked the table.

"Send a squadron of Red Legion in too if The Iwi will have them, means if we need to move quickly then we can shift them around." Jim Corey, the commander of Red Legion suggested and just like that David agreed. A few more discussions and soon things were beginning to move.

Round Table Conference meetings were nothing new for Serenity but she was used to playing a more observational role, this time she was the shot caller. Stepping into the room after a rather interesting conversation with her aunt, the Crown Princess took her seat at the table and took a deep breath "Mrs Wall." she said
"Your Highness" Sophie Wall said standing in front of the rooms large wall screen which was displaying an image of the Tokara Islands "The Tokara islands, source of a dispute between Rokkenjima and Daito for decades, not been a major issue for a while. At 6:16 VMT today two Rokkenjiman RK-80 fighters shot down a Daito Q-6 maritime patrol aircraft over these islands, the RK-80's were in turn engaged by Daito J-7 jets. The problem is further Rokkenjiman jets were scrambled toward the intercept zone."
"Making it appear that Rokkenjiman reinforcements were on the way." Serenity said "What does Rokkenjima say?"
"According to what Daito have informed us about Rokkenjima say the two RK-80's went rogue." Sophie said
"Do we believe that?" Serenity asked
"Your Highness." Sally Barkley the head of Achkaerinese Intelligence said "Given Charles Ofdensen has managed to compromise Rokkenjiman Intelligence to the point of gutting multiple agencies it's not beyond the realms of possibility that he's got some level of influence within the Rokkenjiman military and let's add in Remei-9 and the Peniche Irift test, I'm concerned about how far that influence goes however the present problem is..."
"It matters not what we believe but what we can prove." Robert Westbrooke, the Attorney General, said "And we can't prove this is Charles even though it's a nailed on certainty."
"Which legally leaves us where?" Nettie Taylor asked
"No proof Charles initiated this puts Kyoko and Rowe on the hook for it." Robert said "You were Premier you know the chain of command in Rokkenjima, the Premier isn't there."
"Your Highness." General Kakashi Fuji said, he was appearing via video link from Gowu "I have the honour of having worked with both Henry Cole and Alex Rowe I don't think this comes from them. This smacks of a much more serious problem than a territorial dispute, if Ofdensen can initiate this when he's not supposed to be within the chain of command then what else can he do? I do not believe that Pyrena currently has control over the Rokkenjiman military."
"Adam?" Serenity said looking at the Minister of Defence Adam Sheppard
"Safety requires we treat this as Rokkenjiman armed attack against Daito" Adam said "If this is Charles then he's just fired the first shot of a war. I recommend treating all Rokkenjiman assets as hostile. It doesn't matter what Pyrena says if I'm a ship CO I have no means to know whether a Rokkenjiman ship is commanded by a Sophia Forrester or an Admiral Kisho. So I have to assume a threat."
"That raises a couple of thorny problems." Simon said looking at his sister "The Azukishima and QCMB."
"We tried containing Charles, that is no longer viable." Sophie said "We're ready to sunstrike our embassy in Rokkenjima and our Antares base."

Serenity stretched out for a moment mulling over her options "Ok here's what we do." she said "Sophie sunstrike the embassy and Antares. Adam I want countermeasures to hinder Rokkenjima's military capability figured out. Nettie get on the phone to Emerson, that group of ships led by the IRN Enterprise has twenty four hours to move towards Gowu if they have any intention of keeping Kyoko safe, after that every Rokkenjiman asset will be considered hostile. The ships stationed at Antares head for the Tokara islands, let's deter any Rokkenjiman follow up, make sure Daito knows those ships are coming." she paused looking around the table "If this is Charles and we're fairly confident it is by the sound of things, then he just fired the first shot of the third patriotic war. He does not get to win, the game remains the same - get ahead of him and stop what he has planned before he brings the whole house of cards crumbling down."

Somewhere just off the coast of Daitō
16 January, 2023
2019 Hours

The hulking L-16 Suzume travelled along the Daitōjin coast, mimicking a typical flight-path for any aircraft travelling from Tenkyō to the Tokara Islands. Officially, it was out "transporting standard heavy-duty equipment to the Islands", but in truth, its payload was anything but standard. The aircraft was carrying five pallets—a key component in the Kaisoku Ryū missile system—which together had forty-five JASSM-XR cruise missiles. They were the sort of low-observable missiles which you would use if you didn't want the attack being detected ahead of time. Just an L-5 with a single pallet of six missiles would be necessary to sink a carrier under the best of circumstances, or to deal a knock-out blow to an airfield if needed. This mission, however, would require far, far more than that, and thus, a larger aircraft.

Over the coast of Kikai Prefecture, with the lights of the distant Shinkyō metropolis in view, the lumbering aircraft shifted course away from its previous flight-path, heading instead for Awara. Its crew broadcasted a message, claiming that they were low on fuel and would need to land there instead, but this was a lie. Officially sanctioned, so the proper authorities played along, but still, it seemed odd for the crew, knowing that they would be firing the first Daitōjin salvo of the Second Great East Ardian War, their target, rather innocuously, being communications sites and power plants. After all, the first day would be spent targeting primarily the Rokkenjiman Military's ability to effectively communicate amongst itself and to organize an effective response.

A few minutes prior to zero hour, as the aircraft neared Awara, its loadmasters made the final checks on their strike package. Then, its large rear door opened, and the first pallet was away, followed by the second, then the third, and so on until all of them were out, dragging their parachutes with them.
"Good chutes... Sensors are good, missiles are armed... And we are... away." The aircraft's co-pilot said as the aircraft banked into a left turn, heading for refueling. In but a few minutes, the missiles would reach their targets, and then they were in business. This was but one such strike of many going on roughly at the same time, from aircraft deployed out of various air force bases on the mainland and on Tsukishima. Furthermore, numerous Tomahawk missiles would be launched off various surface ships, their targets likewise communications and electrical equipment.
Somewhere in the Skies over Pyrettania
16 January, 2023
2035

The pair of P-3 Yajirushi stealth bombers slowly approached, roughly 15 km above the city of Pyrettania, which had settled in for a long night. And indeed it would be long, sleepless for many, but such was life, and such was war. It was a shame to see such a beautiful town on the list, Jirō thought as he steered the plane, his mission commander waiting to deploy their payload. Their objective was to hit key communications infrastructure in the city, hindering Rokkenjima's ability to coordinate its air defense sites around the country. One of the major targets was Rokkenjima's Ministry of Defense Building, through which a significant percentage of military comms traffic was routed. For the sake of the assault in the coming hours, this attack needed to succeed; it was a high risk, not because of any particular difficulty, but because of the price a single P-3 carried with it. As the minutes counted down to Zero Hour, the P-3's mission commander placed his finger over the trigger, awaiting the chance to drop their payload: 26 JSOW glide bombs, each pre-programmed with the coordinates of a given target, be it a power station or communications equipment. If these two aircraft didn't accomplish the mission, then the missiles launched by CSG 3 from the Dauntel would. 10:40 PM. Zero Hour. With a pull on the trigger, the bombs were away. Now, it was time to flee the area.
Near the Daitōjin-Rokkenjiman Border
16 January, 2023
2039

As Zero Hour neared, a two flights comprising four GH-28 Hoyau attack helicopters and 1 MH-31Ka Nurarihyon multi-mission helicopter flew just above the surface, heading east. Their call-sign was Taskforce "Shinohara", and their job was to sneak up on and destroy two key enemy radar positions near the border, which would cut a vital gap in Rokkenjima's radar coverage, through which Daitōjin and any allied aircraft based in Daitō could stream through to hit their targets. A few minutes prior, guided by E-2, E-3, and E-4 AEW&C aircraft which were orbiting relatively near to the border, they passed under swarms of friendly aircraft comprising the Imperial Daitōjin Air Force. By now, aerial tankers were undoubtedly refueling this enormous first striking force, which was waiting upon them to complete their mission.

While the first shots of the war had already been fired, it would be the Imperial Daitōjin Army which would make the first shots to explode during Operation "Phantom Fury". By just a few seconds early, the two flights reached their targets, forming a rows, four abreast, from which they could rain down death and destruction. Then, at precisely 10:40 PM and seemingly unnoticed, the time had come. The Hoyaus fired off their AGM-114 Hellfire missiles upon the sites, first aiming for power generators then following it by firing more missiles and unguided rockets at their radar dishes, command vehicles, and command equipment. As they moved closer, the helicopters engaged whatever was left standing with their 30mm cannons, cutting a swathe into Rokkenjima. With their mission now complete, they turned back as Daitōjin and allied aircraft screamed overhead, using the opening to begin the air campaign. The war had begun.

The missiles would meet the triple-layered Rokkenjiman missile defense system, which would allow one missile to go through as it was striking a target which the Imperial Rokkenjiman Armed Forces designated as being under the influence of Ofdensen anyway.

The Hoyaus would find themselves engaged by Rokkenjiman RK80s, countering the helicopters ability to conduct operations in Rokkenjiman airspace. They would either be repelled or shot down, depending upon how stubborn their pilots were.

After communications with Abstergo which gave Rowe a fairly certain idea where Ofdensen was he gave the call. Despite the costs of the operation, the go-ahead was given for IRN Saisei to fire upon Exuperia Palace, where Charles had taken up residence. Five Tomahawk cruise missiles would set forth through the air from the Rokkenjima Sea and obliterate what had once been a residence of the Anselmo Family, hours later it would be confirmed via dental records that Charles had been killed in the operation.

OOC: I am not recognizing any actions against Pyrettania.

OOC: His removal from power shall, however, stand while any further action against Rokkenjiman forces will see a forceful response from the Rokkenjiman military and the activation of defense clauses.

Tokarajima, Tokara Islands
17 January, 2023
0839

For the last twelve hours since the war began, artillery-fire had rippled across the island of Tokarajima, striking key military installations on the neighboring Gaijijima, an island located some 19 kilometers east-southeast from Daitōjin-held territory. The island, like the larger Kuwajima, had been held by Rokkenjima for as long as the present dispute had been around, and before then, it had traded hands a number of times since the early 17th century. Now, however, the ownership of the islands would finally be put to rest. In the week that followed the shootdown of Akawashi 304, Daitō had deployed assets belonging to the Kaigun Rikusenta, the "Imperial Daitōjin Marines", ostensibly to defend the islands initially, though now, it was clear to the world what their purpose was. They were going to take the islands, tear the islands from talons of the foreign devils.
Overhead, closer to the mainland and more importantly, out of range of Rokkenjiman radars, a flight of L-5 Kumo aircraft, five in number, flew on, carrying the same pallets used earlier in the war. Their payload was mixed, made up of roughly 40 JASSM-XR cruise missiles and 20 ADM-160 MALD-J decoys. They were flanked by an escort of four J-9 fighters, which each carried a further four decoys of a similar make, as well as two JASSM-ERs. Right before they crossed into range of Rokkenjiman radars, the aircraft would release their payloads, which would, with considerable speed, make their way towards the island and, more specifically, their targets, such as radar installations on the island, anti-aircraft batteries, and numerous other hardpoints.
From the perspective of a Rokkenjiman radar operator, at absolute best they would see what looked, based on the flight profiles and signatures they received, like Daitōjin J-20s heading towards them, while any other targets were incredibly unlikely to be seen. Of course, as stated, that was under the best possible conditions. More than likely, they would be seeing what appeared as a veritable electronic storm heading towards them, a capability of the MALD-J which roughly lined up with the J-20's EW capabilities. If they ignored it, in the eyes of the troops on the ground, they could be allowing themselves to be attacked, but if they were able to get a lock and actually engaged it, but it later turned out they weren't real, then they would've expended their ammunition for nothing, leaving them vulnerable to attack.
Meanwhile, on the island of Tokarajima, members of the Kaigun Rikusenta were waiting for the signal to launch their assault on the island. If the attack was successful, then they would move, but if not, then, well, what harm would it do to wait until the next barrage?

With renewed military actions on the part of the Empire of Daito the Imperial Rokkenjiman Navy would spring into action, along with a notification not just to the Empire, but Rokkenjima's allies, that further aggressive military actions would result in the activation of Rokkenjiman defensive treaties. The Kitsune Strike Group would be reinforced with the Enterprise and Eleanor Strike Groups, in addition to the firepower of two Sovereign Class SSGNs, the Saisei and the Ahmya. As the forces sprung into action messages were transmitted making it perfectly clear that further actions on the part of the Empire of Daito would be repelled, the islands would be held by Rokkenjima, and any further actions would result in the activation of Rokkenjiman defensive treaties bringing the Tytorians, Dartfordians and Lakhzovians into the conflict.

In addition to the Rokkenjiman assets already moving to defend the islands the Sturgeon Class LPDs Diamond and Sterlet, two of the most versatile vessels throughout the Imperial Rokkenjiman Navy and carrying 1,200+ Rokkenjiman troops, would join Rokkenjima's defensive operations for the islands. While every opportunity would be taken toward deescalation if the Empire persisted the Empress was prepared to unleash the full capabilities of the Imperial Rokkenjiman Armed Forces. It would not be two misguided fools which the Empire faced but the First Empire itself unified in the defense of Rokkenjiman territory.

The East Moreland team given the task of trawling through what was likely to be hundreds of hours worth of ICON data from Rokkenjima was headed up by Grace Yacobs a raising star of the National Intelligence Agency. Accompanying her where a gaggle of analysts and engineers, among them was Tillie Breckenridge, more accustomed to handling the King's cyber security, and Lindsey Easom , a serving officer in Cyber Legion who had made a name for herself using enemy communications against themselves in the Lodjain Civil War. The team got through a literal vat of coffee as they listened to radio messages, looked at encrypted data and countless other avenues of investigation. Finally they had prepared an interim report for the Rokkenjimans.

Quote from: East Moreland Report

Having been given access to the various system involved in the chain of command that concluded with the tragic downing of a Daito maritime patrol aircraft we have reached the following conclusions.

1. There was a long standing intention for officers onboard the INS Kurogitsune to subvert the Rokkenjiman military authorised chain of command. A series of seemingly innocent text based messages had been sent between the ship and a shore facility. These messages covered a range of topics ranging from requests for certain provisions including such things as ice cream and even a shipment of pencils. When examining these messages however it was discovered as well as being sent to the shore facility it was also sent to the INS Dispatch in a seemingly innocent administrative error.  The receiving ships logs were then checked and the exact same apparent mishap had occurred in their messaging. When comparing the two ships messages they had both made the same requests to the shore facility except for different quantities and catalogue numbers. For example three days before the incident the INS Kurogitsune ordered 120 tubs of chocolate ice cream while with the exact same message wording the INS Dispatch ordered 122 tubs of strawberry ice cream. When examined by cryptologists working for East Moreland National Intelligance Agency it was determined that these numbers were part of an elaborate code which saw the INS Dispatch give INS Kurogitsune orders to sail to the co-ordinates from which they launched the ill fated attack against Daito forces. While our time frame has permitted us to go back only so far it is clear such messages were being relayed for at least the past four weeks and we believe given more time this time frame could be much longer.

2. At least 50 members of the Rokkenjiman Air Force have subverted the chain of command. Data logs onboard IAF aircraft that regularly over flow the islands show that there was occasional chatter on a short wave radio frequency that while monitored by the IAF is not commonly used. While it is not uncommon for outside agencies to stumble across such frequencies the messages in morse gave tail fin numbers of aircraft due on patrols that day. It is therefore unlikely that such a correlation would have happened accidently. It is our belief that this was disloyal members of the IAF reporting to each other who was on patrol at times considered possible for attacks on Daito forces. It is our belief given further time we would be able to determine a location from where these messages originated.

3. The radio operators log onboard INS Kurogitsune omits some messages. Utilising onboard recordings and comparing them to the official log around 24 messages have not been recorded in official logs. The content of these messages can be uncovered if more time is given. At present we have one side of the conversation. It is clear from what we have seen that these messages are with civilian vessels in the area such as one which takes place with a fishing vessel. It is rather surprising that such a mundane call would be removed. We have discovered the identity of the fishing vessel on this call and it is currently declared missing. We have traced its owner and having examined their financial records they have recorded an abnormally large amount of landed fish. Upon discussions with the local fish market it is clear that these records are grossly exaggerated leading us to determine that the records are fraudulent and a form of money laundering. The payments for these fish include substantial payments from a company based in the Rokkenjiman capital and who have in the past provided funds for campaigns by the Centre Party.

4. Three minutes after the shooting down of the Daito aircraft a message on 121.5 MHz (international distress frequency) was sent by the INS Kurogitsune it simply said the word "Splashed" . It originated from the work station of a Marine air operations co-ordinator. We have traced that transmission to being made by Sgt Sgt Umeki . Having then accessed the work station logs the system intended for use to arrange for medical care for injured Marines had been used on several occasions to access a frequency used by the occasionally used small airfield just outside Bevelle. This is located just 3.5km from Bevelle where Charles Ofdensen was apprehended by members of Rokkenjiman security forces and placed under arrest. Having visited the airfield it is clear the airfield is only used for day operations as it lacks more than rudimentary lights and is utilised primarily by a local gliding club. This airfield has no sophisticated security systems except on hangars in which equipment is stored however utilising CCTV from a neighbouring golf club we identified the same vehicle arriving at the airfield five minutes before these transmissions made by Sgt. Umeki Mineko and leaving five minutes after. The vehicle is registered to one of the officers appointed to Charles Ofdensen's security detail upon Mr.Ofdensen's request after the election victory by the Centre party. Sgt Umeki Mineko is currently some $25,000 in debt due to a gambling addiction and has a baby on the way. A series of $5,000 payments have been made to Sgt Umeki Mineko from the same company who are mentioned in Point 3. There is no reasonable explanation for these payments.

5.  There are a huge number of ships in the INS. It was discovered that all those which had utilised covert communication had received a letter from the office of the Premier just 12 hours after Charles Ofdensen had taken office. While these letters are in themselves not problematic as they contain words designed to reassure the Navy of his reform, good intentions and hopes for a strong, proud future for Rokkenjima what is clear is that only those ships involved in the conspiracy received them. We have verified that the letters were sent via official chains of command and it is our belief that they have been used in such a manner as to relay instructions to officers loyal to Ofdensen's course of actions. Utilising a similar code as to that mentioned in Point 1 we have obtained partial messages which include the phrase "Strike at splash". Given more time we believe further coded letters will reveal more information and more connections linking Ofdensen to the crew onboard INS Kurogitsune and to some force possibly outside Rokkenjima.

We stand prepared to continue our investigation but in hopes that this will support ongoing peace efforts we thought prudent to make these findings avaliable to Rokkenjima, Daito and Grand Duke Hugo Lascelles.
