A guide to the Demons of the Balance
« on: June 08, 2023, 11:11:18 AM »
INTRODUCTION

The Balance is the native faith of the Themyscrians. It promotes the idea that the living world is a delicate living organism that we must interact with in a way to promote the positive for it. The faith teaches there are four Gods.

* Aura - a benevolent God who is always looking out for the best interests of humanity. He is known for his compassion, his strength, and his wisdom. He is the one who created the Arbiters and gave them the task of keeping track of people's deeds.

* Draco - a malevolent God who is driven by his own selfish desires. He is known for his cruelty, his cunning, and his ruthlessness. He is the one who created the demons and gave them the task of corrupting humanity.

* Harmony - a fair and just Goddess who is committed to upholding the balance of good and evil in the universe. She is known for her impartiality, her compassion, and her wisdom. She is the one who judges people's souls after they die and decides where they will go.

* Ayanna - a mysterious and enigmatic Goddess who is shrouded in mystery. She is known for her magic, her power, and her ability to create and destroy. She is the one who controls the weather and the seasons.

The purpose in life is to ensure that you do your part in maintaining the balance of the world and that you do as little harm as possible, any harm you do being outweighed by the positive. The Gods wage a kind of proxy war using humans as their pawns and should Ayanna or Draco ever win then humanity will be wiped out and replaced by the Demons over whom they have control and who at present are confined to the underworld. There are however people who believe that this evil victory is inevitable and that they can act as servants/familiars for Ayanna and Draco and as a result be spared destruction. The concept of the demons is therefore embedded into many folk stories and tales in the nation.

Koliada Fotias

Koliada Fotias, or as it translates in the "Ancient Tongue" is the capital of what we may consider to be an underworld. The Ancient Tongue is a language, spoken by very few outside the religions priesthood, that is said to be the language spoken by the Gods, Arbiters and Demons. It is similar to modern Themysciran but different enough that most will not be able to accurately translate. Kolida Fotias means Valley of Fire and is a city where both Draco and Ayanna reside in separate palaces. Unlike Christian traditions of "Hell" the underworld is essentially a functioning world where people live, work and interact. There is a civilization there which some people claim they can interact with. Koliada Fotias is therefore believed to be an actual city in which demons have their own residencies and have employment. The underworld even has an economy where elements taken from humans are traded in much the same way a modern market economy might function. Much of this employment for demons revolves around extracting and trading things such as negative or positive emotions from humans cast into the underworld following death because of negative reports from their arbitors. Humans are therefore considered almost like cattle within this realm and exist to be farmed by the demons until they are used up and destroyed. Many elements of popular culture are thought to be influenced or inspired by this concept such as the idea that "The Matrix" would be similar to how this underworld lives and that the visions characters like Neo experience are actually controlled by demons as a way of manipulating what they can farm from us.

DRACO
FATHER OF DEMONS

The God Draco is believed to be creator of all demons, the exact manner of this is unknown however most believers agree that the first souls of humans that were sent to the underworld were transformed into Draco's personal guard and from them he created further demons to form the vanguard of a potential army that, if not kept in balance, would be destined to take over the world. Draco has no good in him and every action he takes is designed to inflict pain and suffering on mankind.

He resides in a palace made of black marble surrounded by a lake of black water. In this Palace he plots with his demons on how to take control of the human world and how he can corrupt humans to swell the ranks of his army.

When he created demons he gave each of them the need to feed on a different aspect of humanity and a method by which to do so. These aspects of humanity are traded as commodities in the underworld and it is by Draco and also Ayanna's grace that these souls who have been cast down are divided among the demons. A demon will feed on a soul they have been given control of and then extract the elements it does not feed on before exchanging those for things it needs. Draco gave some demons the ability to exist in both the underworld and this world.
There have been numerous times when he has ventured into the human world in order to try and make deals similar to those told in some cultures where he would offer your "Hearts desire" in return for your service in the afterlife.

AYANNA
QUEEN OF TWO REALMS

Ayanna is believed to originally have been one of the gods that reside in the human realm however attempting to take power from Aura and Harmony she was cast out of the human world and found a refuge in the underworld. She formed a ruling partnership with Draco as she was able to user her magic, particularly her control over the seasons and weather. She is known to be able to use magic to shape shift and despite being cast into the underworld is able to pass into the human world for short periods.

She resides in a palace made out of obsidian which is in a dark forest.

She is considered a Queen to a class of demons that, like her, can spend brief moments in the human world and this has made her extremely powerful as she is able to tell them ways to manipulate humans and these can in turn bring resources that demons feed upon such as emotional energy back to the underworld, meaning that in some ways she is in control of a kind of importation business in the underworld.

EROSCILLA
THE FALLEN LADY

Eroscilla is said to have at one time been a lover of Aura who created her. However as he grew board of her and began to find other amusements, mainly among humanity, she was cast out of paradise but was taken into the demon realm by Draco. She is now placed in charge of a group of demons known as Sirens. These demons are said to feed off "Energy" from human intimacy. While ancients referred to demons feeding from "Energy" today the faithful believe these are emotions and hormones. To gain these "energies" Eroscilla sends her Sirens into the human world where they target people to fall in love or lust with them and then during moments of intimacy ranging from simply hugging to more intimate actions they drain the human of these hormones. It is said that they are capable of storing them and therefore Eroscilla can gather them once her Sirens return to the underworld.

In statues and drawings Eroscilla is always shown as a beautiful looking woman however from her forehead protrude two short white antlers, much like an antelopes. She also has two sets of ears, one within the other. One set is said to allow her to hear Draco no matter where he is allowing her to do his bidding at any moment while the other set are like normal ears. She is said to be able to cast magic that allow her to change the form of her Sirens.

XELETH
THE WISE MAN OF FEAR

Xeleth was at one point just a record keeper in the underworld. He demonstrated a vast knowledge of the suffering of mankind and was therefore given a position of controlling knowledge in the underworld. He controls a group of demons known as Torturers who feed exclusively on the "energies" created by not pain itself but the fear of pain. As such his demons infiltrate the human world to establish scenarios for people in order to feed.

For souls who have been sent to the Underworld Xeleth is responsible for providing Draco and Ayanna with lists of humans who would appeal directly to their own particular desires and needs.
