The Robin Hood Internet Gang (Open To All)
« on: November 25, 2022, 10:38:14 PM »
4pm Silverhills Zoological Gardens

Tomiko sat neck deep in a pile of lush green bamboo merrily munching away on the grass. In a smaller pile just a few feet away little baby Jen rolled back and forth on her bamboo more interested in trying to do a backwards roll than eating. The enclosure had a small raised platform where Gary, Jen's father, lay snoozing as he often liked to in the afternoon. A group of schoolkids sat sketching the monocrome creatures as their art teacher wander behind them peering at their clipboards and offering suggestions on how to improve their drawings. It was a common sight for the family of pandas and little Jen would often go over to the windows in the enclosure and people watch, it was one of her favourite things apart from when the large green suited thing came in carrying fresh food and then there would be a gush of fresh air and a glimpse of something beyond the heavy computer controlled gate. That though usually came as the sun rose and not as it seemingly did now. Jen hopped up and hurried over to the gate expecting the green booted one to come through but no one did even though the gate was open. Bit by bit Jen pushed her nose through the gap and soon found herself hearing screams and the sound of running feet. Across the zoo the computerised gates swung open and now everything from baby pandas to meerkats began wandering the park. It was just a stroke of luck that the zoo had large ditches as well as fences containing some of the more dangerous animals. Keepers rushed to their staff areas and grabbed whatever they could, some found long hooped leads that could snare the creatures exploring the world beyond their usual homes, some though found tranquiliers and even a few rifles. Within minutes the call had gone out to the Armies rapid reaction team for the city and Sgt Olly Thomas and his Red Legionnaires were rushing en route to the zoo. "well this is bloody different" Cpl Barks was in the back of their vehicle breaking out some of the less lethal equipment that they carried. As they pulled away from some traffic lights Thomas slammed on the brakes as a car ran through a red light.

"Twat" Olly yelled but then noticed all the lights were on green. "Lights are buggered" he commented as he flicked a switch and put the units red and green lights on indicating they were a military unit reacting to an emergency. The intersection cleared and after Thomas struggled to get the old SUV into gear the grinding sound subsided and they were on their way.

"I've worked it out." Saxby announced from the passenger seat, "Big cats get 100 points, any apes 80, little monkies 50, the King of the animals the majestic Honeybadger gets 1000. You lose that many points if you kill them though. 50 quid in each, winner takes all." The team confirmed they were in on the wager as they pulled up to the zoo entrance. Visitors were streaming out as the Legionnaires headed in. They found the zoo manager in the control centre which was without power except for one monitor which simply showed a green clad pixel figure firing a bow and arrow across the screen. The arrow slammed into the side of the screen and then a scroll unrolled.

10pm the Palm Hotel, Ipsus, Royal Seleucid

The east wing of the luxurious palm hotel featured a rather lavish entertainment centre. Casino games, TV lounges showing sports events, slot machines and even floor shows featuring some of Mundus biggest names. At this time of night many people began to flock in as the hotel was getting ready for its final evening performance. Its five restaurants were finishing off their pre-show service and getting ready for turning tables for their supper service. Junaid Akber was sat with a cup full of small Drachmaes slowly feeding a slot machine. He was down to his two or three coins when a pretty young server passed by. They'd been watching Junaid fill the machine over the last few hours and as the casino often did they brought him a complimentary drink. Junaid stopped playing for a moment as he chatted with the server and accepted the drink slipping her a crisp note as a thank you. He placed his drink in the holder attached to the machine and reached towards the bottom of his coin cup hoping the next coin would get him something back. Before he could insert the coin the reels spun forward and back and then stopped. "JACKPOT" it announced and began spitting out high denomination notes. Junaid was shocked. Less then five seconds later the machine next to him, which was empty, began the same thing and Junaid did his best to snatch the notes of that too, then the next machine and another began to pay out as the slot machine hall filled with the sound.

Upstairs in their office the casino director slumped in his chair. "What the hell is happening?" he screamed as he watched on CCTV people filling their pockets with notes as his staff did their best to handle the situation. He opened his laptop to see if he could access the systems and turn everything off but all he found was a picture of a green clothed archer pinging an arrow across the screen, a golden arrow punching its way into the side of the screen before a scroll unravelled.

Big Chief Iasion Asztalos leant back in his chair and let the international dispatch fall to his desk. He looked across at an aide.

"Good job we have a strict no-deal policy with terrorists here, eh," he said with an uncharacteristic grin.
"Mmm," replied the aide. "The more special services we sent in, the less terrorists there seemed to be."

5pm Papcastle Riverfront Hospital

As the panda made its escape in East Moreland the screens of Caroline Austin, the CEO of the Riverfront Hospital flickered. "Bloody IT" she cursed as she instinctively tapped the screen despite it being of no use. They'd been experiencing blackouts as the private health care provider switched computer providers. Caroline had been promised that it would be a seemless switch over but it had been anything but. Everyday they'd had glitches and around a quarter of the nursing staff had found that their access to the network had been revoked leading to mayhem as the new IT team had to double rush the fix. Now as her wifi connection dropped out again she cursed and headed down to the basement where the IT department was based.

"Can we get the wifi back on, I've supposed to have a meeting on skype with a drugs company in five minutes and you're making me look like I'm running a joke." She scowled. She had become a regular visitor to the basement over the last week and then she was on the phone to the IT companies CEO who while always apologetic never seemed able to make things better. She was reassured that the problem would be fixed and so made her way up to her office once more. The elevator she was riding in stopped briefly as the lights flickered "Millions of pounds down the toilet and they can't even make the lifts run." she cursed as the short lived panic of the feezing elevator subsided. She made her way to the office and unlocked the computer, everything seemed to be working just fine and with just enough time to make a quick coffee. The almond milk from her private fridge was just being stirred in when the beeping computer informed her that the skype meeting about some new pain relief drug was about to begin. She took her seat and ensured everything was set up before clicking to begin the meeting. "Hi Bryan" she began as they greeted each other. For five minutes they discussed the new drug and how it compared to what they were already using. Suddenly the screen flickered and went black, despite the empty screen she could still hear Bryan. For a good few minutes there was a back and forth of "Are you there?" between the two of them before the voice disappeared.

She was about to pick up the phone to yell at the guys in the IT department when she heard a noise from the desktop and noticed a green clad figure on the screen. An arrow twanged and flew across the screen seemingly embedding itself in the side of the screen. Slowly a scroll wrapped around the arrow seemed to unfurl and carried a message.

10:00 PM — Yamato Semiconductor Manufacturing Headquarters, Toyokawa Science Park, Toyokawa, Ashina Prefecture

Roughly around the same time as similar incidents were ongoing, the Yamato Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's IT department had been put into action, responding to a potential threat to the company. Owing to the company's size, being one of the largest independent semiconductor foundries on the planet, it was imperative that a response be formulated as soon as humanly possible. A few facilities reported being locked out of their computers, with a graphic of a, quote, "green clad figure firing an arrow across the screen." Said arrow was reported to have appeared to have embedded itself in the side of the screen, with a scroll unfurling from the arrow with a message which read,
"We are the Robin Hood Gang. We have control of your networks. If you want them back and our silence click on the link below and transfer us ¥2.4 billion ($30 million)"
Naturally, the first course of action had been to isolate the infected computers, for which there were many. By one of the systems administrators on duty at the time, one Ichirō Sonoyama's count, it was somewhere around 4,000 separate devices which had been isolated, grinding many foundries across the nation and in a few other countries to a halt. It was bad. Very bad. There was no denying it, and "Ichi", as his friends called him, knew that it was going to be a long couple of weeks. As he was the team's supervisor for the night, it was his duty to notify the proper authorities of what was going on, which was, simply put, an absolute pain. Just his luck, tonight of all nights, when he was getting ready to go on that vacation with the wife and kids on Sunday, this had to happen.

12:36 AM

Two hours, thirty-six minutes, and forty-nine seconds. That was how long he had been on the line with the Imperial Police Agency's cybercrimes division, and evidently, he hadn't been the only one. YSMC wasn't the only company hit, and rumor had it that it wasn't just targeting Daitōjin-run businesses either. No. It was worldwide, and part of him got the feeling that whatever this was, it was only just beginning. As he stepped out of his office, he saw that many of his staff were waiting for him, which frankly rather annoyed him. This was a major security breach, and they were just standing around? Unless they had finished what tasks they could before the next shift-change, they had no business waiting for him.

With a sigh, Ichi said "Okay, first of all, what do you think you're doing, just standing around?" before, sensing that they were there hoping for an update from the IPA, adding "As for the call, the IPA's rather swamped right now. We aren't the only ones getting hit, if I were to guess, Aishi[1], Zayasu, and a couple other heavy hitters got attacked as well. They'll be sending a few officers down around, say, 6-7:00, but until then, we're to follow standard protocol."

The next step was to identify and shut down what was termed "patient zero"—essentially, the source of the infection. That meant going through every open encrypted file one-by-one and taking note of which users had accessed them before and during the attack. It was a solid bet that a single user which had access to a large number of open files at the time would be the source of the infection, at which point, their account would be suspended immediately so as to mitigate the risks of further infection. This was going to be a most time-consuming task, so part of the team would be assigned to it for the time being while everyone else would be assigned to the forensic investigation of the attack. Well, everyone who was actually capable, anyways. It was time to call in the big guns.

6pm AK Time, Scrivens Medical Labs, Chamwick, East Moreland

Scrivens Medical was what was known in the Achkaerinese business community as a "kick starter" or more specifically a "Riviere kick starter" in simple terms every year Riviere Corporation's CEO Catriona Rowan, as part of a reality tv show, invested two hundred and fifty thousand iso's into someone's new business, this also made Catriona a business partner of the silent variety. In 2020, East Morelander by birth and by parentage Princess of Nueva Ardia, Janelle Scrivens had become the first overseas winner of the show and had set up shop in Chamwick or as it had been formerly known Technology City, medical research was her game, today was a fairly big day for her firstly because she got to show off her business to her younger sister Maki Hamer but also because they were getting the keys to a house in the city, a home for them and their other two siblings essentially reconstituting their family from the four corners of Mundus. "Impressive." Maki said as Janelle showed her through one of the many research labs and then through into her office "Everything you wanted and more."
"Pretty much." Janelle said
"So got anything exciting in the works?" Maki asked
"One or two things." Janelle said, she trailed off as her computer screen displayed a green clad figure with a bow and arrow - being familiar with Achkaerinese popular culture and its enjoyment of superhero shows, films and comics Janelle could have been forgiven for at a glance identifying the figure as the Green Arrow but as the archer fired an arrow that seemed to sink into the company logo on her screen and a scroll unfurled any notion of this being a bit of fun on the part of her staff vanished, the chilling message on the scroll.

Maki was around to Janelle's side of the desk within seconds "That's not good." she said, getting her phone out to make a call "How damaging?"
"If this is true... very." Janelle said "A fair amount of what we do here is related to disease research. We've got stuff we're going public with that's just potentially been compromised, and that's not the worst of it."
"What is?" Maki asked
"You can't develop cures or treatments without first researching the ill." Janelle said "If they've got access to the research then they've got access to detailed analysis and mapping of certain things. This could be very messy."

Cyprien Léandre was pleased with how his mornings work had gone. He and his merry little band of computer boffins had sent over 2,000 copies of their ransomware and now they could see several of the major players they'd targetted in various countries across Mundus had received their package. Cyprien closed his laptop which had been showing a long list of receipients each with either a red light next to their name indicating they had yet to trigger the software or a green one to show that they had but payment was still not forth coming. He made his way out of the basement of the flat he and his fellow computer theives had been renting in the Marseille town of Bauduen. They had meet at University two years ago and their shared hatred of the elites exploiting the lower classes bound them together. They had planned to start some kind of company together and run it ethically but then the elder of the fivesome, Christèle Richelieu, had suggested utilising their skills to level the playing field. At first it had seen bonkers but soon they had seen that several other people had got away with this. It seemed the key was to publicise it but keep what you asked for relatively small for the person you targeted.  $20million for a casino taking in huge sums each day was very little and with luck a fair few would pay rather than admit their company hadn't been able to keep out such an attack. By now Cyprien had reached the front door and slowly unlocked the three bolts they had on the door and headed down to the bakery on the corner. Madam Romilly, their neighbour, was trying to haul her little wheeled shopping basket up the front steps of her house. She was around mid 80's and despite her age was determined to continue pottering around. "Good morning" Cyprien waved as he quickly walked over and lifted the basket up the short flight of stairs that lead to the old ladies front door.

"There is no need Cyprien" She admonished him. "I may be old but I'm not incapable." she tutted in a way that was also clearly thanking the youngster.

"I know Madam" he replied, "Its just nice to be nice" he bounded back to the street, smiled and headed on his way. By the time he'd reached the bakery his burner phone had already registered another two businesses had triggered their software and more importantly several publications across Mundus had received their "press release", a separate ransomware device with a much more simple way forward.

Dear Newspaper Editor

You are seeing this as your publication has been selected to hear of an ongoing situation in your nation.

Several hours ago our organisation targetted several individuals or businesses who we believe have exploited their status or power to profit at the expense of others. We are currently in control of their computer files. In order for them to regain their access they must deposit a small donation, relative to the size of their operation, to ourselves. Once this has been paid we shall free up their network and never darken their doors again. All funds that we receive shall be redistributed to ensure that those who are exploited benefit, after all it is their hard work that allow the corporate classes to enjoy their wealth.

We now control your files, we of course wish you no harm, and we shall release those files once we see you report what we have done. Should you comply not only will we release your files but we shall also furnish you with a list of the companies and individuals we currently are dealing with.

Signed

A light lit up on the communications panel on the Big Chief's desk. He lifted the phone receiver and waited as his secretary connected the call. A few minutes later he placed the phone down in the cradle.

It looked like the Great Firewall was holding; just about. Pandect had long ago incorporated their youngest, nastiest hackers into the governmental IT security services and it was a poor day when a piece of software could make much of a showing against his militarised NETResponse teams. Usually it was other places that got to experience Pandect's 'soft diplomacy', not that it was ever admitted.

Still, this one was eating significant resources, and that call had been a bit of a surprise. Team 1337 at Pardu University had been activated, which had automatically pushed the entire country's DEFCON to four. It was so much easier when you could see the opposition and just push a big red button.

"Give it a moment to cool down then we shall recalibrate, Ben can you see to that please." Professor Klaus Ragner asked one of the young technicians as he returned to looking at the clip board in front of him. Todays tests had been going well and Klaus was pleased that they could soon try their experiment with a few more samples of the real stuff rather than just metallic tokens. The team had been busy testing out a new system for their patented Shrimp Method of nuclear fusion. Every 23 seconds a simple magnetic rail gun fired a micro-pellet to an insane speed of Mach 204 before slamming into a target surrounded by liquid lithium. It was a precise process as you needed to make sure the pellet hit the exact same spot time after time. Today they'd been trying to calibrate the system after some upgrades to the railgun and until they had things perfect they wouldn't be introducing nuclear material into the mix. Klaus looked at the data from their last shot before the shut down. It was just 0.0001mm shy of where they needed it to be and while it was within the margin of error they'd worked out as being "safe" Klaus knew each time they failed to fire perfectly they lost a slight amount of power. Ben had been gathering various tools and pieces of equipment while keeping an eye on the temperature of the tank. It had nearly reached a temperature at which they could set about their work. As he opened up the rail gun and prepared to make the adjustments he turned his eyes to the computer screen that would show the settings they needed.

"Is this a joke?" Ben asked as he saw an arrow flying across the screen.

"What's wrong?" Klaus put down a coffee and walked over to see it for himself. As the now familiar scroll unravelled demanding $4million . The team quickly turned everything off, the last thing they wanted was all this sensitive equipment to be ruined. The Illumic Shores Technological Institute(ISTI) team called in everyone they could and soon decisions beyond physics were being made. Klaus and his team merely stood around cursing the Robin Hood Gang. After about three hours of being locked out Prince Lukas entered the test room with an angry looking expression on his face.

"I'm here because we see your work as an issue of national security. I'm not saying this lightly, your bosses have made the decision not me but I will warn you that if you end up in this mess again or we find any of your work becomes openly available then there is a good chance some of you will be unemployed." The Prince simply walked out and left angry that his brother the King had provided the funds to pay the ransom so that the team could continue their work. No sooner had Lukas slammed the door on his way out than the computer had, true to the gangs word unfrozen.

At the Papcastle Riverfront hospital there was of course panic over the fact they were struggling to access the electronic files that seemed to be the life blood of the medical profession. The call had been put out to get every admin member of staff into work to dig out paper files and run them around for the medics seeing the patients with appointments. Even that had become a challenge as secretaries prayed they'd remembered to update the chunky diaries that were kept in each doctors office. Dr. Caleb Wolf had worked here since the year 2000 and the last decade as the royal families nominated doctor at the hospital. It was a relatively straight forward job as apart from the occasional check and child delivery there had been hardly anything they'd needed since 2007, it was though now the events of 2003 that concerned Dr.Wolf.

Dr. Wolf had phoned the Palace not long after the computers had gone down. It was important Queen Diane was made aware. It took several conversations with the minions up there for the Palace to finally put the Doctor on the line with the Queen. "Your Majesty I'm sorry to have to disturb your day." He began. "I understand you've been made aware of these computer hacker types but the bad news is that we've been hit here and they're telling me that they potentially have access to our medical records." The line went silent on the other end as the Queen took in what was being told to her.

"Do you think that they will find out?" Diane asked as she could feel a wave of panic she'd not experienced in a long while wash over her.

"I'm not sure. They have a huge number of files and its not well known that we hold the royal families information here. I think though with the media being alerted to the hijacks its worth you preparing yourself. I know its in your past but a lot of things have changed in Mundus in those years and well, it could become important again." The Doctor wasn't sure if he was now stepping across some kind of etiquette line in how he addressed the Queen but he felt sorry for her now.

"Thank you Dr. Wolf for the heads up. I'll have our staff do everything we can to get your hospital back on line soon."

In Bauduen, Marseille, Cyprien Léandre had returned from the bakery and was now returning to the bank of computer screens they had set up. A screen was running a set of letters and numbers like something out of the Matrix when it suddenly buzzed and sent details onto another screen. Cyprien settled down to see what the computer had found. They'd set up an algorithm to search the data they had blocked for key words and phrases. While it would be nice to get some money for their projects it wouldn't hurt to have some juicy gossip to sell to the media and it seemed they had just found some.

2002 Royal Northfort University

The Rowing Clubs Summer Ball had just finished and Diane and Prince David of East Moreland walked arm in arm through the campus as they wound their way home to the block of student flats that they called home. Block 32 was home to 36 students normally but it was now home to half that number. With a Prince of East Moreland and Princess of Eskdale among the blocks residents a host of security agents also called the place home. The two royals did their best to enjoy a normal student experience but now a little tipsy the two were oblivious of the security agent walking a few yards ahead of them while their friend Alex Redfern and his date for the evening, a red head girl by the name of Rachel, walked behind them clinging to each other. As they neared Block 32 the group were let in without scanning their key fobs as Wilf, an East Moreland security agent buzzed them in. "Good evening your Highnesses. Good Ball?"

"Magical" Diane said with a smile. She had been in a relationship with David now for six months, in fact tonight was their six month anniversary. They'd spent much of the evening enjoying dancing and a few glasses of wine. The group usually hung out in the communal kitchen after a night out but tonight Alex and his date disappeared off to his room straight away. With the perimeter secure the agents were content to let the two young royals sit in the kitchen and enjoy a nightcap. David poured himself a glass of Seaforthian whiskey while Diane a glass of Heyran red wine. They chatted, holding a kind of debrief about the evening while finishing their drink before retiring for bed.

The next six weeks were a blur. First it had been the summer holidays. Diane had spent it with the Ironsides and while King Sven and Queen Helena had taken Freya up to the mountains Prince David and Diane had the run of the Palace, there had been parties, balls, hunts and generally two young lovers having fun. Then the time had come for Diane to return home for a few religious ceremonies and while normally David would have liked to accompany her it wasn't possible as he and Alex Redfern got called up for parachute training as reservists. Diane was disappointed of course as she would have liked to show David her homeland but she also understood the duty that was placed on their shoulders. The day David and Alex had packed for their training Diane had begun to get nervous, her period was late and now the strip in front of her confirmed it. She felt sick, not from the pregnancy but from the idea that her family would be so disappointed in her. The fact she was carrying the child of the future monarch of East Moreland and the future monarch of Eskdale, the two Kingdoms would be united but she suspected that wouldn't please the people of either Kingdom. With that in mind and feeling that duty was important she had been to see Dr.Wolf and the next day had the abortion that would ensure East Moreland and Eskdale never shared a monarch. It was also that abortion that 20 years later was likely to cause a diplomatic incident if it ever became public knowledge.

OOC- Thanks to Dave for trusting me with King David for a bit.

While Cyprien Léandre had been monitoring the keywords being searched hoping for some good data that they could use for one of their side hussles. A few juicy pieces of gossip could help them make a few million extra on the side but it was Yohan Périgord, one the others involved in the gang, who was busiest. He was busy putting together some data onto a memory stick. "Anything good yet?" Yohan asked Cyprien when he had unpluggen the little black stick.

"A few things but nothing worth the big bucks" Cyprien replied as he clicked to open a file from a politician in Safraen entitled "Donors" it was simply a list of names and amounts but As Cyprien cast his name down the list there was nothing that looked suspicious or scandalous and so he would check out the names later.

"OK, keep looking. I'm going to make the drop." Yohan slid the memory stick into his pocket and headed off with his branded Amazon jacket on. His push bike was parked by the door and soon he was zipping through the local traffic heading towards the depot he worked at.  Bauduen had an old medieval quarter and Yohan was one of the designated couriers that used a bike trailer to run packages around the cobbled streets. Today was a relatively light load and as he checked his packages he made sure to double check that Miss Ambre Michèle would be the final drop. A few hours later he had just the one left and made his way towards the post office. They had a large yellow locker outside that people could have their Amazon packages stored in for pick up if they knew they were going to be out. He picked a locker of an appropriate size and slid the package for Ambre in while also adding the memory stick to the locker. Yohan would never know who Ambre actually was, or if "she" was even a woman. He'd been contacted by someone simply calling themselves "Pierre One" online and offered a significant sum if they could hack a certain number of companies, they'd even gone a step further and highlighted some ways in. Now all that was left was to tansfer the files they'd seen and that would secure the final payment which even if the ransom didn't go to plan would still make the whole enterprise worthwhile.

"Are you kidding me?!" the almost instant reaction of Mark Sharpe, the Achkaerinese Government's national security advisor echoed down the halls of Button Park, a building a few miles outside of Foxton, the home of Achkaerinese intelligence, where so many codes had been broken in the Great War, where so much history littered the halls. "No seriously are you kidding me? Should I go and check my calendar to see if it's April fools day, because this is a dropped ball if I ever saw or more accurately read one!" he dropped the report he was reading on his desk "The computer network at a medical research company gets hacked rendering not only the network inaccessible to its employees but the research details open to whichever spotty, glasses wearing, kid in their bedroom in heavens knows where is behind this." he took a breath "And then it gets even better firstly because it's multiple companies across Mundus, but secondly if anyone with the know how got hold of this data." he slapped his hand down on the folder and winced ever so slightly "We could be looking at an act of bio terrorism."

"Are you done?" Rion Ayanami asked with half a smile from where she stood leaning against the doorway.
"Yes." Mark said "What do you think?"
"I think I want tickets to your am dram showing." Rion said "You'll be a great Lieutenant Kaffee."
"Don't know why I let Saki talk me into it." Mark said "Ok now what are you doing about this hack?"
"I don't believe in coincidences, so until I can prove otherwise it's one hacker or group and multiple targets that I'm treating this as." Rion said "We're tracking network access to see if that gives a lead, but tracking people online is tricky, remember when Barren was running amok last time and uploading online?"
"Just because activity is traced somewhere doesn't mean the party responsible is there." Mark said
"I'm also looking into various groups who could have done it." Rion said "But the attacks themselves have generated a lot of surplus noise."
"But you've got your best on it?" Mark asked
"Yes." Rion said

Silverhills Zoological Gardens

"Is that.....a...a...Kangeroo?" Cpl Saxby asked as the team sat in the security office that they had taken over as a HQ and now he sat squinting at a screen as his colleague Cpl Barks used a small joystick on the CCTV system to zoom in.

"Yes....or a Wallaby." Barks tilted his head to try and better see what the Tiger was eating.

"Aren't they the same thing?" It was a scene neither had wanted to see but with hundreds of animals running loose after the zoo's security systems went down it was lucky non had yet escaped the confinement of the zoo itself. Several guards had managed to tranquilise some animals or nervously herd some back into pens. Half the zoo though was now under the occupation of the "Growlers", essentially any animal that could rip your face off or would consider doing so. The team had been sat watching various horrific moments were the predators had got hungry and found their own food.

"Wallabies are smaller, much smaller than a kangeroo" Barks informed Saxby who was now cleaning his rifle with his feet up on the desk.

"Thank you Steve Irwin" Saxby carefully put the parts of his rifle down on the desk. There three hour shift was nearing an end when the door opened. "Morning boss" Saxby greeted Alex Redfern as he entered. The normal parts of East Moreland's military would have stood, snapped to attention and issued a report at the arrival of a senior officer but instead the Red's were notoriously laid back about such matters.

"Grab your gear and meet me in the gift shop in five minutes......." Major Redfern looked at the screen. "That tiger eating a Kangaroo?" He asked.

"No a Wallaby, kangeroos are much bigger." Saxby quickly corrected him.

"OK, well whatever the hell it is radio it through to the zookeepers and they can tick the thing off the wanted list." They'd been keeping a list of the animals that were running loose in the hope that they could account for them all as the last thing that the Mayor of Silverhills wanted was a pride of Lions wandering the city. They'd got one or two of the things as they'd wandered close but under the command of Red Legions Brigadier Jim Corey they had until now been content to simply set a perimeter. Now he was summoning his 64 Legionnaires to a briefing. For Redfern it was just another in a long career of military service but it was the first that had ever taken place among the aisles of stuffed toys.

"Morning lads" The Brigadier entered to find his men gathered before him, each dressed very differently, some in woodland camo, some in overalls while others seemed to be rocking civilian clothing, one even had a Northfort Royals rugby club cap on. Each of them though had immaculately clean weapons in their arms and on their hips. The mission they were being sent on was a simple one. Track down the remaining escapees and give cover to a keeper who would be with them. If the keeper couldn't sedate the creature or it was found outside its home pen it would be handled by the Legionnaires. Corey finished his part of the briefing and asked if anyone had any questions.

"Do we get to mount the heads on our living room walls?" Barks asked from the back of the room.

"No you do not." The Brigadier said sternly. "You only use your weapon when you have no choice.  This is not some Zimalian Safari adventure anyone I hear of using their weapon without need is doing the Long Drag next week with the selection candidates." The Long Drag was a key part of the Red Legion selection process, it was a 65km cross country march to be completed in 20 hours or less. The very thought of doing it again was enough to silence the usual chatty Legionnaires. "Now the hunt is a foot." Corey had a rather unique revolver rifle slung on his back having opted to join one of the teams out in the zoo.

30 minutes later and various animals had already been sedated and so far no Red Legionnaires had opened fire. Alex Redfern was with his usual team, Sgt. Olly Thomas was taking point as they made their way over towards the area they'd seen the hyenas earlier. Taking the left flank was Gavin Saxby, a former Air Force forward air controller who doubled as the teams medic. The right flank was covered by Thomas Barks, a rather outspoken member of the Legion who had a belief that there was no situation he'd ever encounted that couldn't be solved by the correct application of high explosives. Redfern completed their slowly moving diamond with a zookeeper by the name of Will in the middle. They'd practiced moving in this manner most of their career as it was more commonly used to protect VIP's. Olly held up a closed fist and the group stopped as the Sergeant raised his rifles sight to the eyes and swept the area ahead. "How many Hyenas we got?" He asked via their comms.

"Three" Will replied rather enjoying his experience of being a makeshift Red Legionnaire of sorts for the day. The Hyena's could be tricky. As pack animals they'd likely not split up and in his mind Will was expecting to lose one or two of them on this mission. The animals were dozing on a rock in what had once been an enclosure for the emu. Of the four giant birds the zoo had three had been accounted for with one now being sighted as a black and white blood spattered mass of feathers.

"Command this is Red Three, splash one Emu in Grid 6G." Redfern called it in. "With the Hyena asleep what do you think our best shot is?" Alex asked the zookeeper who looked through the scope on his own rifle. He examined it for a moment or two and then put his rifle down.

"I think if I take aim at the closest the one furthest away might not get spooked. I can probably get that one as well but then who knows. If they stay in the enclosure we could be OK but I'd say you two should take aim just in case." The plan was formed and they all got into position. Will would be the one to count them down and then likely mayhem would begin. They'd told command they'd be taking the shot and as Redfern watched their rear to ensure no animals crept up on them the zookeeper and the other Reds prepared to get the job done. There was a thwack as Will fired the first shot and watched as it hit its mark in the hyenas rump, it yelped as the sting woke it up and that woke the others who began scanning their environment for the threat muscles twitching ready to run. Will had reloaded quickly and fired, his second dart missed as the first hyena began staggering as it tried to run. The animals bolted towards the back of the enclosure before finding their way blocked, Will fired again and got nowhere near.

"Somethings coming" Redfern had spotted movement. "I think we've company." He wasn't sure what yet as it was moving behind an ornate hedge that deocrated the lawns of the zoo. "Take them out and get here." Behind him Redfern heard two shots from the Red Legionnaires and then his comrades joined him. "Not sure what but there is something there." he gestured to the area in front of them and the movement of the shrubs. They had no idea what was there but fingers itched on triggers expecting something like a Tiger to come bursting out at them. As they waited the black and white shape of a Honeybadger emerged and simply laid down on the path looking at them. "Cheeky bastard" Alex said as it seemed like it was almost mocking them. "Will shoot it" Redfern ordered and dutifully the zookeeper did. The Honeybadger took the dart in the shoulder and stood up and almost seemed to look at it before growling at them while retreating back towards the bush. A foul smell erupted as the stink gland emptied and the team wished they had their respirators on.

"Do we kill it?" Barks asked nervously half gagging on the smell.

"No way am I shooting Stoffel" Saxby spluttered.

Thankfully Will had reloaded and got a second shot into the creature which seemed like it was considering charging them before it began to slump. "Go grab it Barks" Sgt.Thomas ordered the corporal as the team scanned the area for other creatures.

"No thanks" Barks replied, "I've seen them sleep off snakes, little bastards likely tricking us." The Legionnaires looked at each other and then at Will who realised he was going to have to go get it. Reluctantly he did and soon the team were heading back to deposit their prize in a holding cage while another team with transport picked up the Hyena. By the time the Honeybadger was in its cage it was coming too and it was pissed off. The team watched it growl at the world through the bars and then exited quickly as it was clear it had reloaded its stink glands. By sunset all the animals had been taken care of. It was a heartbreaking day for the keepers as the majority had been shot by Legionnaires after the keepers had failed to get the job done. The team left Silverhills with the zoo staff room in tears as the Legionnaires boarded their Landrovers for the return home. Brigadier Corey climbed aboard Redfern's team LandRover and then ordered Barks to pick up the crate at the rear. "Bit heavy boss" then NCO said hoping to get some info.

"Lets just say the staff aren't likely to miss some of the Buffalo." The Commanding Officer said with a smile, "Did you know Turnbull in Red Eight apprenticed as a butcher before joining the military?" He chuckled, "The Lions that got in the Buffalo enclosure have remarkable teach that cut just like a Legionnaire's sword." The team stowed all their kit and the Buffalo meat before setting off, Thomas almost stalled the LandRover as they reached the zoo gate and a crunching sound of the gears being mashed saved the day much to the amusement of the Brigadier. "Its true what they say Sergeant. Learn the art of delegation." The job done the zoo had control back and hadn't paid anything out, the issue now was could they get their IT systems back but that was someone elses concern for now.
