Utman-Lakhzov Conflict
« on: November 14, 2017, 11:17:36 PM »

04:00, Bokar Village, Transmecuria

Ilan Erditz sat in the darkened cab of the pickup truck and took two deep final pulls on his cigarettes before tossing it out of the open door. proceeding to crush the glowing remains of it under his booted as he swung himself out and into the field in which the vehicle had been parked. From the bed of the truck men were silently clambering down to the ground, a scene repeated across the fields surrounding the Utman village of Bokar.

Ilan picked up his radio "All detachments, give me your status." he ordered through the device the replies came swiftly confirming that his men were in position "Good. Proceed as we planned." he said before motioning for those in his presence to begin the advance on foot towards the huddle of dark buildings in the distance that formed the nucleus of the settlement so as not to alert the residents of their arrival. Bokar had been chosen for a specific reason, it was the home village of the terrorist who had attempted to assassinate the Chief Medaber and as such was determined to be the perfect target for driving home the message that from now on Utman violence would be met with serious reprisals.

Ten minutes later they reached the village where they quietly and stealthily made their way through the streets, keeping close to cover until they found their primary target, the family home of the terrorist himself. Turning to the radio again Ilan checked to make sure that the other teams had taken up their positions around the perimeter of the settlement.

Having confirmed this he ordered his men to proceed with their mission. They begun to hastily open glass bottles that had been filled with petrol and stuff lengths of rag into it, waited briefly for the material to soak up the fluid inside then lit them. At this moment two of his men used the butt of their weapons to smash the windows of the house with the others quickly throwing the now burning firebomb into the ground floor of the dwelling. The bottles shattered within quickly spreading fire throughout the ground floor while the noise of the shattering window served to wake the residents and neighbours who rousing from their initial confusion proceeded to begin screaming while Ilan and his men retreated into the shadows of a nearby garden.

Within a minute the shrieks and shouts spread out across the village waking all the residents, bringing many of them running out into the streets and towards to conflagration where already men were beginning to fetch buckets in hopes of aiding those inside who were now yelling for help from an upper story window having found their route out of the house barred by flames.

As this scene unfolded and a crowd formed a new form of panic swept across the assembly as men in military fatigues carrying automatic weapons began to emerged from the shadowy side streets of the village and move in towards them. A tense frightful silence fell over the crown as the Hand of Emet surrounded them, Ilan and his men also emerging from the shadows of the garden and moving towards the Utman.

"Who here is the Chief Elder?" he asked coldly.

An elderly man with a neatly trimmed white beard came forward "I am." he said "What is the meaning of this? Are you responsible for this?" he sputtered angrily.

"SHUT UP!" Ilan barked "I will be the one asking the questions here." he paced back and forth menacingly before the elder "Seven days ago a son of this village in an act of savagery attempted to assassinate Medaber Danoi Yishveliy. This shit hole of a village has a history of support for the ULO, a history of breeding terrorists and a history of protecting these animals from natural justice." at this point he walked up to the elder so that his face was mere centimetres away "I demand that you immediately hand over all ULO members and sympathisers to us now, do you understand me?"

The elder stepped backward, an expressions of shocked outrage spreading across his face, his position of authority in this village society having left him ill prepared to handle such a display of disrespect. "Who do you think you are to come here and speak to me like this!" he began before he was cut of as the butt of Ilan's weapon came crashing into his face. The elder spat blood and fragments of shattered teeth before reeling backward and falling to sit in a stunned heap on the ground drooling bloody ropes.

The villagers overcame their initial reaction in which they had recoiled in horror at the scene playing out before them quickly replacing it with outrage at the sight of this violation of their revered chief, a number of men surged forward in blind rage towards Ilan, only to jerk violently backward and fall to the ground as the deafening sound of gunfire accompanied the bullets slamming into their chests. Ilan's men kept their guns raised and pointing at the crowd which had once again recoiled in terror, this time fear apparently overwhelming their sense of outrage.

Now silent but for the blood curdling screams of those inside the burning house and the muffled sobbing of women in the Utman mass Ilan continued "So this is what is going to happen now. You are all going to go into your Shrine, we are going to search your houses and those of you who are found to be supporting the terrorist ULO will be found and dealt with accordingly." he cast his gaze menacingly across the crowd "If any of you wish to denounce the snakes among you, it will be counted in your favour." after waiting twenty seconds and being met only with sobs and silence he said "Very well." then turning to his men "Take them to the Shrine." As his men led them at gunpoint to the Utman house of worship the screams from within the house finally came to an end.

05:00

In the distance Ilan could hear gunfire as those men who had been assigned the duty of preventing escapes from the village having picked off those who had initially tried to flee were now moving between the outlying farmhouses and doing away with the residents.

In the village proper a search of the properties had led to the discovery of more residents hiding in various nooks and crannies including a large number of children. All had been taken and confined with the others in the village shrine so that now the makeshift prison was standing room only, the smell emanating from that building was particularly foul suggesting that some within had been unable to control their bodily functions whether through fright or simply deprivation of toilet facilities. This fact gave Ilan a perverse sense of pleasure, how they had so quickly resorted to the desecration of their own holy place confirmed to his mind their degeneracy.

"It will be daybreak soon" he said to his men "We are done here now, let us finish the task at hand." at hearing this two of his men approached the shrine door and began binding the heavily iron handles with chains preventing the door from being opened from the inside, at this moment one of his men spoke up.

"Sir the children in there, what about them?" asked the militiaman nervously shrinking as Ilan's penetrating glare fixed upon him.

"Do chickens hatch from snake eggs?" Ilan asked rhetorically "get on with your task or join them."

As Ilan and his men walked away from the village towards their waiting vehicles they could hear the collective screams of the hundreds trapped within the shrine as the building was engulfed in flames. As they reached the waiting cars he glanced at his watch 'good' he thought to himself 'we'll be back at camp in time for morning prayers'.

Ilan and his men were returning to their base in the hilltop settlement of Hir Shaleyl after another successful night time operation. After Bokar it had been decided to temporarily lower the severity of the attacks, that operation had after all been meant as a signal to the Utman of what they could expect in retaliation for any further atrocities they might have been planning, it had also had the desired effect of spreading fear and panic among the Utman population to the extent that in some villages up to a quarter of the population fled at the first suspicion that Hand of Emet were nearby. This had led him to pioneer new tactics with some pleasing results.

Tonight for example they had visited three separate villages, one of which, Tirat, was known to hold the home of a ULO regional organiser. In Tirat they had located the man’s home and one of Ilan’s men dressed in the drab woollen shawl that was common to the rural types tapped gently on the window of the servant’s quarter at the rear of the building near the kitchen, rousing him his sleep. After some gesturing the servant with a look of mild confusion and irritation rose and proceeded to go to the kitchen where he unlocked the heavy wood door that led from the food preparation area to the external veranda, the shawled figure was not to be seen. Opening the outer screen door and leaning out he called in a hushed tone: “Old man what is it you need? It’s late and my Master is asleep.” It was then that he noticed the shadowy figures standing either side of the door, in fright he hurriedly tried to shut the door but was too late; a booted foot had inserted itself between the door and its frame and with a heave the door was thrown open, the servant opened his mouth to scream for helped but to his shock only a rasping gurgle issued from his throat. He reeled backwards hands coming up to clutch at his throat, blood flowing hot and sticky between his fingers before he collapsed on the floor.

The militiaman wiped his knife of blood on one of the hanging teacloths on the kitchen wall before the men split up and fanned out through the house. Locating the bedrooms they entered silently, dispatching the occupants in the same way as they had the servant. Ilan had personally carried out the execution of the target. The ULO organiser had woken to find a hand clasped tight over his mouth, in the pale moonlight streaming from the window he could see a puddle of dark liquid soaking the sheets issuing from the throat of his wife who lay motionless. With dawning understanding he began to struggle frantically “Medaber Yishveliy sends his greetings.” Said an icy cold voice in his ear just before the blade of a combat knife slammed into his chest, he felt it be tugged out and heard the hiss and bubbling as his scream forced air out of his punctured lung before the blade was again plunged into him, he counted four before he lost consciousness, in total Ilan stabbed him eight times.

The other two villages had been less violent affairs. In one they had destroyed a generator that was being used to power the local water tower and a medical clinic, for good measure they had raided the building’s stores for useful medical supplies and burned down the village school. In the other they had found that the village’s water supplies came from a manual pump. Splitting in to two teams they removed the handle and used thermite ignited on the pump head to destroy the pump’s inner workings while the other busied itself with dousing an olive orchard with gasoline which they lit just before departing for home. Across the valleys other units were engaged in a similar mix of tasks, the aim was to economically cripple the Utman and sufficiently frighten them to make them take flight from their homes. At present the main targets were villages that occupied the valleys between the scattered Lakhzov hilltop settlements. Driving the Utman out from this region had been deemed vital for creating a single defensive line prior to the push up towards Kinere which was currently planned for the spring.

Their convoy began to climb out of the valley hugging one of the steep hills on the approach to a cluster of Lakhzov hill villages known locally as ‘the five crowns’. To their left a slope led up towards one of the settlements, Hir Inban, while on the right of the road the terrain plunged down into the valley below, suddenly a bright flash followed by blast like a hammer rocked Ilan’s car. Ahead of him through the windscreen he could see the lead car be lifted in the air by the bomb detonation before slamming back down onto the road followed by the loud cracks of weapons fire from the surrounding slopes.

Ilan threw himself down onto the floor of the vehicle as bullets began to strike the vehicles. He radioed his men ordering them to take defensive positions followed by a call through to HQ requesting back up hoping that those detachments of Hand of Emet that were stationed in the five crowns had not been sent off on operations. Scrambling across to the opposite side of the car he opened the door and slip out using the vehicle for cover. Looking down the line of vehicles he could see that his men had already gotten in position, their weapons at the ready. Ilan began scanning the hillside looking for the source of the fire, occasionally one of his men would bob up above the cover of the vehicles and fire into the darkness at some estimated enemy position. One of Ilan’s men who had raised his head about the bonnet of a truck slumped down dead onto the road, Ilan swore while one of the men nearest the downed man quickly scurried towards him to check his pulse, before shaking his head mournfully and taking up his weapon retook his position.

It was then that Ilan’s radio crackled into life “Captain Ilan, what’s your status?”

“Taking heavy fire, at least one confirmed dead probably more.”

“Hold tight, Captain Tor is converging on your location from Hir Inban.” Shortly after this message came through Ilan heard a lull in the weapons fire followed by panicked shouts from above, the sound of a few shots being exchanged before the slopes fell silent.

“You can come out now Captain Ilan!” came a voice from the slopes.” As Ilan raised his head tentatively above the defensive line of trucks he saw in the pre-dawn light Tor’s men making their way down the slope, weapons pointing at ten disarmed Utman identifiable from the red armbands they wore as members of the Khaliniz Brigade. The walked sullenly with their hands on the back of their heads, upon reaching the edge of the road their captors ordered them to their knees. Ilan and his men emerged from behind the vehicles taking stock of the damage.

“Took you long enough didn’t it?” said Ilan approaching Tor “but thank Emet you were near.”

“Hardly an accident.” Replied Tor slightly sheepishly “we received a report from our contacts in the Prefecture that they had picked up on Khaliniz radio chatter about a planned operation to infiltrate Hir Inban and bomb the police station, we were waiting in ambush for them.”

“So why did they end up ambushing us instead?” asked Ilan

“Very good question.” Replied Tor “Let’s ask them shall we?” he turned to one of the kneeling men “You. Why the change of plan?”

“I would never tell you, you dog.” He snarled before spitting at the Captain. Tor looked unimpressed, sighed and in a single swift motion raised his hand gun to the man’s forehead and pulled the trigger, brain and shards of bone exploding out of the back of his skull in a shower of gore. He walked to the next in line and raised his weapon to his forehead.

“Why the change of plan?” he asked, his words laced with a tone that suggested he found having to ask tedious. This one having seen his comrade’s fate was more cooperative.

“We were delayed, and then when we saw the convoy we thought they were returning to the village. There is only ten of us, we know we couldn’t complete our mission if the convoy reached so we decided to set an ambush instead.” He rattled off anxiously.

“You see this is why you people will never win. No tactical sense.” Said Tor as he casually turned and walked to join Ilan, as he went he gave a brief hand signal at which the men guarding the Utman fired their weapons into the backs of their heads. “Let’s gather our men” he said to Ilan before turning back to his own men “as for these, take them down to the Utman village and hang them somewhere prominent.”

Outside the Birza Labour Township

Erdilou Kacüp had been in his twenties during the '86 partition crisis and following the disastrous failure of the Utman military to repel the Lakhzov surprise attack on the young Utman state had joined the Khaliniz Brigades out of the conviction that doing so would be the only way to protect his people. History appeared to have proved him correct and although they had lost and been forced underground he had never given up his desire to see his country rid of Lakhzov domination. With the recent declaration of the new Utman State he had eagerly joined up to the reconstituted Brigades, this time being awarded a Field Captaincy in recognition of his past experience waging campaigns against the Lakhzov militias in the Utman Hill Country.

He had initially been frustrated by the lack of real action save for occupying government offices and infrastructure. Understanding that the government was attempting to negotiate a diplomatic withdrawal of the Lakhzov from their land he none the less ached for battle, to be able to subject the Lakhzov forces to the pain and humiliation that his people had suffered for the past three decades. Finally he had been given orders which did not simply involve guarding government offices, he had been tasked with liberating the Birza Labour Township.

From his position the other side of the valley he could make out the entire Birza township, a terrible mess of huts made from scavenged materials built on the side of a hill surrounding by a double barbed wire fence punctuated by the occasional watch tower. Behind this rose the chimneys of the Birza Foundry, thick noxious smoke belching from them and the small specks of people clambering around one that was under construction, the sight enraged him.

The Lakhzov government had always made out that the townships were part of a programme to aid the Utman rise out of poverty. Of course everyone had known exactly what the reality was, there wasn't a parent among the peasants who didn't fear that their son would be called up in the labour draft, for those who were taken were never heard from again. However despite knowing the nature of these places seeing the level of deprivation in person was painful.

Spying out the site using binoculars he noted that the number of guards was actually exceptionally low. Perhaps the government had never really expected much resistance from those incarcerated within, either that or they had been forced to withdraw the majority to guard higher value targets? whatever the reason it made his task here easier.

He gave his orders to his men, one small detachment would attempt to breach the perimeter fence nearest the military supply sheds as if attempting to raid the armoury. This would undoubtedly trigger perimeter alarms, in fact his plan counted on it. Once the Lakhzov guards responded to the alarm the detachment would withdraw and with luck the guards would pursue them at which point the rest of the force would storm the camp.

The plan was simple but had proved extremely effective, the guards had taken the bait and ten men had chased the five man detachment out into the surrounding country leaving a mere twenty behind to guard the camp dwellers. Erdilou had then led his men, who had hidden among the bushes of the surrounding scrub land, on a charge of the main gate attacking first with a hail of grenades and following up with his ninety men opening fire on the Lakhzov as they mustered in defensive positions.

Two of his men had fallen to the floor after being shot from a guard occupying one of the towers before they had been able to work their way towards the look out and neutralise the adversary. They had then marched triumphantly into the camp as the Lakhzov guards fled for their lives.

The occupants had at first been terrified at the sight of them, fearing that they were the Hand of Emet, until they had spoken to them in the Utman tongue. Realising that they were liberators many broke down in tears while others collapsed in fervent prayer of thanksgiving, the entire township was soon engulfed in an outpouring of raw emotions. Looking around Erdilou was suddenly overcome, he had liberated these people but now what? Their time here had been cruel, many of them were malnourished, many more were suffering from severe medical issues not to mention the mental scars, he stumbled backward as a withered filthy woman grabbed at him with an agonised howl. His men drew their weapons but he signalled for them to put them down "Put them down, she means no harm." the woman had sunk to the floor still clutching at Erdilou and was now sobbing uncontrollably.

"We need to call for reinforcements, and we need to get word of this out to the world. People need to know what was going on here." he said "For now let's try to get the most desperate cases out of here."

Erdilou Kacüp and his men were angry. Orders had arrived for them to cease engagements against Lakhzov military targets and this included the liberation operations against the labour townships of which Erdilou had so far conducted three.

The decision had been handed down to Erdilou along with fellow Captains from Commander Turdig the head of the Khaliniz Brigades, Provisional Minister of Defence and semi-official leader of the hard line faction in the government known as the Maximalists.

The Commander had recalled them all to headquarters for the briefing following what had apparently been a stormy Cabinet meeting in which the decision had been made to suspend direct attacks on the Lakhzov regular forces. This was, so it was argued, because the international peacekeeping team would provide a defence against Lakhzov attacks on the population and that any operations by the Brigades would simply help to lend credence to the Lakhzov diplomatic position.

The news had gone down poorly with the assembled Captains expressing their outrage in no uncertain terms, at one point during the ensuing discussions the mood seemed to be drifting towards the notion of mutinous defiance of the government edict and only the strength of respect they held for Turdig, and the Commander’s willingness to concede a liberal interpret of the edict allowed him to retain control of the situation.

He had made clear to them that while he would not tolerate a flagrant violation of the terms of the government’s decision, that there was scope for the continuation of operations. The focus would now shift towards attacking Emetist positions in the region, guarding vulnerable villages and waging a war of attrition against the Lakhzov economic exploitation of their land.

In practice this latter category involved sabotage of infrastructure, particularly railways and in the week since the decision Erdilou’s men had ambushed three freight trains by creating obstructions on the tracks and subsequently looting the stopped trains. Today they had set another ambush parking a tractor across the tracks to force the train to a stop, however as they began to approach the train they heard the whip crack of weapons fire and saw clouds of dust kick up near their feet where bullets had struck.

As they retreated for cover it was obvious what had happened. The Lakhzov had quickly noticed the shift in tactics and grasping the unwillingness of the Brigades to engage with their regular forces had assigned soldiers to guard the trains travelling through the province.
Erdilou was furious as he was given no choice but to order his men to withdraw. This situation was ridiculous; the directive not to engage had clearly come from Uttaman and the Shanata Party heads. The former he considered weak and too willing to pursue compromise in his misguided belief in the possibility of a diplomatic victory; the latter group he viewed as being little more than traitors. Almost immediately they had started to display an unseemly lack of courage in the face of Lakhzov opposition and a growing aversion to violent confrontation. The Lakhzov economic blockade and rise in hand of Emet attacks had seen them begin to waver. On top of this the recent announcement by the Kadassa regime that an amnesty would be granted to Shanata members and their party allowed to stand in elections if it were to swear allegiance to the Lakhzov constitution had triggered open discussions in the less radical wing of the party about the possibility of abandoning the struggle for independence in favour of the old party line of increased autonomy.

Back at camp and with the fury of his men on full display he came to accept that soon there would have to be a reckoning. The road to Utman freedom lay through armed insurrection; no other means would achieve it and yet while Utman suffered and died under economic blockade or toiled as slaves in forced labour camps the supposed leaders of the Utman independence movement were selling their future for a hopeless dream. Yes there would soon be a reckoning in which all obstacles to their liberation would be swept aside, a final volcanic upsurge of the bottled rage and frustration of the decades, a great and holy fire that would consume Lakhzov tyrants and Utman traitors alike. This moment was approaching fast, he could feel it in his bones, it was a truth that seemed to scream out from the very depths of his soul.

The men of the Khaliniz Brigades had been aware of the outcome of the latest government meeting before they had even received official word through their command structure. The Captains had been in a meeting with Commander Turdig which had begun shortly after the cabinet meeting had concluded when the news had come out in the media, the Shanata Party were abandoning the struggle and had officially announced their departure from the government to run in the Lakhzov elections. As the story broke on televisions and radios a collective murmur of indignation had spread among the men, this was not just a minor set back, the actions of the Shanata threatened the whole Utman national project; clearly the question of where to go from here was what was currently being discussed by the Captains.

When eventually Erdilou Kacüp returned to his men some hours later they rose to their feet and crowded expectantly around him desperate to hear the news.

"I suppose you have all heard what has happened. I suppose you also appreciate what a serious threat this poses to what we are attempting to achieve here." he stated gravely "It is the opinion of Central Command that this betrayal can not be allowed to pass without a price being exacted, to do nothing would be to essentially hand victory to the Lakhzov. The Shanata have made their choice, by deciding to prop up the Kadassa regime and support continued Lakhzov domination of our lands they have set themselves against the Utman people." The men stirred excitedly and a babble of noise began as they began asking questions to which Erdilou raised his hand for silence at which a hush fell across the room "It goes further than this however. It is also the opinion of Command that position taken by Uttaman and the moderates will have inevitable, fatal consequences for our national movement. To have invited foreign troops to come to police us, to divide us in to small enclaves and enforce customs checks on us all but stifles the hope for our future; Uttaman is sacrificing our only prospect of freedom for the false promise of a diplomatic resolution.

It is therefore the decision of Central Command that both the Shanata and Uttaman's moderates need to be decisively defeated before we can lead our people to victory. Start getting ready, we head out in two hours."

00:00, Central Transmecuria

Erdilou's men had eagerly begun preparing and having received their briefing went about their task. The operation was a coordinated sweep to be carried out simultaneously by all Khaliniz divisions across Transmecuria. As the clock hit midnight they their made their move; the first target was the local Shanata Party leader, Ardis Mandikou a man who had won the seat in the previous election and would undoubtedly be the candidate this time around. The men arrived at his house in a pleasant suburb of the town and forced their entry, breaking the front door and charging into the dwelling. They proceeded to tear through the property kicking open the doors to the bedrooms, in one screaming children huddled in the corner, a boy and a girl grasping each other in terror. In another an elderly woman confined to her bed by age and infirmity was whimpering pathetically. Finally they located the master bedroom in which their target had jumped out of bed and was attempted to arm himself as they entered "STAY STILL!" they bellowed at which the man froze before recovering his senses.

"Who do you think you are bursting in here like you're the Hand of Emet" he roared more confident in his safety than he should have been.

"Shut up traitor!" shouted one of Erdilou's men as he approached and struck the man in the stomach with the butt of his weapon. Mandikou collapsed in a heap on the floor where the men proceeded to kick him, while his wife wailed the other side of the room.

Mandikou, but this point completely incapacitated, was unceremoniously dragged through the homestead and out in to the street where a crowd of neighbours had begun to amass roused by the noise. The family had also been marched outside by the remaining soldiers where they stood together in the front yard of the house huddled together, Mandikou's wife wrapping her arms around the children in an ineffectual attempt to comfort them.

Erdilou approached the man who had been unceremoniously dumped in the road and gave him a swift kick before turning theatrically to address the gathered mass of people. "Mandikou has betrayed us all, him and his friends in the Shanata Party have sold our struggle to the Lakhzov for the promise of personal comfort." he fixed the man with a hateful glare before continuing "Despair not though for the Khaliniz will not fail in our promise to protect our people from our enemies; even those who disguise themselves as friends. As we speak, across our territory our men are moving to secure our divine mission of liberation from those like this animal who seek to harm us from within." at this he gave a hand signal and his men advanced towards Mandikou, binding his feet to a thick rope before tying the other end to the rear of their truck.

The wife realising their intention instinctively lurched in panic towards the scene only to be forcibly restrained by one of the militiamen. There was a sputter as the engine of the truck turned over before roaring to life, the truck immediately accelerated dragging Mandikou behind it, The truck drove at speed around the block of housing three times before stopping again outside the house, the bloodied mutilated body of Mandikou lay unrecognisable and broken.

A horrified screaming went up from the children and women outside the house with the mans wife collapsing in faint at the sight.

Public Announcement from the
Central Command of the Khaliniz Brigades

We the Khaliniz Brigade have long fought for the future of the Utman people. We have sacrificed our livelihoods, families and lives to the holy and noble cause of Utman freedom.

It was with much distress that we witness the attempts by Racip Uttaman and the Shanata Party to effectively sell our future for their own material comforts. We have heard the cries of our people, the indignation and rage that these betrayals have generated among our oppressed brothers.

We have therefore taken action to ensure the security of our independence, an independence that Uttaman announced but did not have the courage to put in to effect. As of this morning we have taken full control of the Provisional Government and are in the process of securing our revolution against its enemies, both foreign and domestic.

Until such a time as our independence is entirely secured government decision will be made by the newly formed Emergency Committee of the Utman Republic. The Emergency Committee has held its inaugural meeting at midday today and issued the following edict:

Quote
All treaties and agreements made between the Utman Liberation Organisation, the Utman Provisional Government or any agent purporting to act on their behalf is rendered null and void with immediate effect.

Consequently the agreement to the presence of international forces within our sovereign territory is hereby rescinded. The presence of any foreign military personnel within our territory will be considered an act of war and dealt with accordingly.

A lot had happened in the week since the capture of Kinere Airport. Khaliniz Central Command had met for an emergency session where the situation had been assessed, the conclusion was as expected; the seizure of the airfield had been a setback not only for their ability to import materiel but observers reported work underway to repair the damaged runway, clearly with the intention of creating an air bridge. Should this be accomplished the peacekeeping force would be able to rapidly build up their presence on the edge of Kinere and allow them to move to capture the de facto capital of the Utman State from Khaliniz grasp.

All had agreed that this could not be tolerated and much attention had been turned to recapturing the position. There had been a deadlock over how best to achieve this; some suggested using the safety of the prisoners they had captured during the retreat as leverage while others suggested a more direct shock assault to reclaim the airport.

Two days in to the argument with the sense of looming disaster growing they were apprised of an unexpected development. Taking advantage of the Lakhzov troop withdrawals they had begun raiding poorly guarded military facilities in an attempt to gain access to heavier arms. So far this strategy had not provided them with much as the Lakhzov had clearly been relocating stored weaponry out of the conflict zone; however the latest raid had handed them a valuable prize.

The Commanders had come personally to view the weapons that had been captured from a Lakhzov convoy heading out of Vilniz. A couple of non-descript crates have been opened revealing the contents, in the large box were a series of artillery shells while the other smaller contained an equal number of canisters each marked with a serial number, a skull and crossbones symbol and labelled methylphosphonyl difluoride. A militia member who had, before the war, been a chemist explained to them the mechanics of the weapon, how the shells contained a mixture of isopropanol and Isopropylamine that when combined with the agent in the canisters during flight of the shell would generate sarin. The Commanders were delighted eyeing their new weapon with a malevolent eagerness that suggested they had already decided how they would use it.

Kinere International Airport

Erdilou’s men had taken up positions in the woods surrounding the airfield. Surveillance had suggested that the peacekeeping forces had nearly completed repairs to the runway, with a lack of heavy arms it had been decided to take a more creative approach to the situation.

With only a stock of outdated man portable anti-air launchers they were hopelessly ill equipped and unlikely to successfully shoot down any incoming plane or helicopter from the peacekeeping countries; however some bright spark in military intelligence had devised a rather cunning plan.

Knowing that sentinel aircraft were being used to provide recon for the ground forces a method of spoofing a signal from a mobile SAM had been worked out. The problem had been that the MPADS gave of a brief EM signature when they were switched on and when they locked on to a target which could be easily identified whereas mobile SAM systems gave a more consistent signature. The trick was, it seemed, to turn clusters of the hardware they had on and off in quick succession, the signal could then be mistaken for that of the more consistent mobile SAM, the use of tree cover would prevent the optical confirmation by the sentinel making the ruse possible.

The hope was that the fear of a mobile SAM in the area would prevent air approaches until the threat was neutralised buying them time. It was likely that if faced with such a threat that troops would be dispatched to hunt the location of the ghost vehicle in order to provide manual targeting for a neutralising strike, this would provide them with the opportunity they needed to strike themselves.

Erdilou had his misgivings about the plan, but he had been pleasantly surprised when he saw a detachment of men leaving the airfield and fanning out into the surrounding woods. He ordered his own men to avoid contact with them and to continue leading them on a wild goose chase with the spoof signal, in the meantime he had his men infiltrate the airfield under cover of darkness laden with explosives, this time they would blow a hole so deep in the runway that it would be taken out of service for weeks, they also decided to target the landing light rig to further complicate future landings.

Hir HaShirin Pass

Captain Fattam had been tasked with closing the B12 route that wound through the Hir HaShirin Mountains and was one of only two passes that led directly to the Somerset border. This, he had been told, was to prevent the arrival of reinforcements once it had become clear to the peacekeeping mission that creating an air bridge via Kinere Airport was going to be difficult.

The operation was easy enough, the road at this point was narrow and hugged the side of the mountains as it wound its way up the pass; simple mining charges were all that were needed to render the round unpassable for months. These detonated throwing out a cloud of debris and dusts followed by the deep trembling of the earth as tons of rock slid down the side of the mountain carrying the road away with it, the dust eventually cleared to reveal a wall of boulders piled high blocking the road. It would take months of work with heavy machinery to clear a path. Further along the range the same process was being carried out on the other pass.

For good measure they would repeat this at several points along the route. If they made it all but impossible for the peacekeepers to actually get materiel and personnel into the country then there was every hope that they could ultimately succeed in securing control of their land and forcing Lakhzovia to negotiate on Khaliniz terms.

It was a hot day in Lakhzovia as Leah Stone led her JET team into the village of Bokar, they'd been driving a few miles north of the village heading to do a follow up appointment for those living in the area near the Viliniz Chemical Plant when they'd noticed the pillar of smoke, thinking it was as a result of an airstrike she'd diverted from her trip and called it in to her boss. They weren't prepared for what they found when they rocked up at Bokar.

Upon their arrival Leah signaled for the team to switch on their body cams - standard procedure plus she had an eerie feeling that something was up, for a village morning the place was unusually devoid of activity, where were the children running around the place? The people going to work? She made her way around to what was left of the shrine and her eyes widened
"How many?" she asked noticing the dead bodies
"Hundreds." one of her colleagues said

"What have we got?" a man asked from behind Leah, this was her boss Charlie Henson
"A lot of dead bodies." Leah said "Airstrike?"
"Not according to the Achkaerinese fleet." Charlie said
"Then this was deliberate slaughter." Leah said "Look at the remains of that chain on the door this was no accident. They were sealed in and burned alive."
"Process the scene." Charlie said "I'm going to call for helicopters to transport the bodies out of here."

In Achkaerin the Emperor Peter Azurewind had been out, he and his fiancee Renee had been out on an official visit, opening a new top of line genetics laboratory complex at Valtheim Metropolitan University. Now they were back at the Marble Palace and greeted by a near white as a sheet Nettie Taylor

"You need to see this." Nettie said she led Peter into his study and played the footage the JET team had sent over to CCU HQ which had then been forwarded to them.
"Get Evanthe on the phone." Peter said "I'm going to call Sakura."

If the burnings weren't stunning enough in their utter brutality the Lakhzov move to cut electricity to the region was perhaps just as shameful. A call from the Emperor wasn't unexpected, thus she swiftly answered her line upon being informed of his call. "If you're reading the same headlines I am then I'm sure we can both see that we're heading for what could very well be one of the largest humanitarian crises in recent history, not to mention what is very much an ethnic-fueled conflict. While we've both tried to avoid it and put in the best of our efforts, I fear diplomacy may very well have run its course," Evanthe said with a heavy sigh.

"I'm not throwing in the diplomatic towel yet." Peter said an idealist to the end, the voice of his late wife Iona ran through his head "I'm going to contact Sakura and put her in the know, with luck she'll be able to at least put things in place but I'll still hope for peace. Meanwhile I'm provisionally authorizing what we call a Guardian Angel strategy and I'm sending Nettie down to Somerset to explain this to Archon McKenna, what I need from you is your consent to transfer Achkaerinese troops presently stationed at Tienanmen to Somerset. Because if this is going where we both fear it is then we need to be ready to act. I will also be issuing a formal statement shortly addressing the situation, but I'll say this now this is six hundred deaths too many, Kadassa reigns the Hand of Emet in or we'll do what we must."

"Such authorization may be found with McKenna, as I hold not the power to make such a call so long as I sit upon Chrysanthemum Throne. He will be inclined to seek the opinion of Ui Cennsalaig as well, seeing as they hold a front row seat at present," she replied, mindful of Ui Cennselaig's presence in Somerset. "Even Rokkenjima will be required to seek the approval of the Commonwealth before transferring forces from QAMB to the mainland. It is a delicate position, but one we are forced to work with."

"While I hold out faith in peaceful resolution we cannot hold great faith in Kadassa. I am prepared to ensure Pyrettania-Nakim is addressed, while also moving to bolster our support for the Utmen. A red line has been crossed, and while I had hoped Kadassa could see reason, his actions speak volumes. We cannot get this wrong, for there shall be no second chances."

Not unlike their Lakhzov neighbours, the Utman held tea in high esteem. Tea opens and closes any meal, newcomers are often received with tea, and in the course of the day tea is often served between meals.

Arram Gulat, Commander of the Khaliniz Brigades and proud Utman patriot, was entirely typical in this regard, never missing a cup. Sitting down with one of his divisional commanders, Arram was doubtlessly expecting tea to be taken, and paid the ritual pouring of it into the traditional bowls around the table little heed, being more interested in the latest developments and militia clashes around and within nearby Khalin. Their meeting was taking place within Maasin Municipal Police Station, an imposing structure, and more heavily fortified each day. As the fortifications rose, Arram found himself becoming more restless. The war he had expected was yet to come, and it taunted him with it's absence. Much better to start the fighting, and know where one stands, he felt, than to hold vigilance endlessly and fruitlessly. No doubt the fighting spirit and tenacity of the Utman would scatter their cowardly Lakhzov foes like so many leaves.

The thought of leaves brought Arram back to the tea before him, as the rest of the table politely waited for him to drink first. He smiled, and raised the cup to his lips, calmed somewhat. Taking a sip, he balked: "This tea is revolting. Tastes like it's been stewing since this morning; a mockery of our culture." The Commander's embarrassed and fuming aide-de-camp, who had personally made the tea just as Commander Gulat normally liked it, went in search of the police station's-turned-stronghold's supplymaster, intending to berate him for stocking such second-rate refreshment for the Commander himself, despite requests to procure the very best he could. Despite the aide's red-faced searching and shrill declarations of impending punishment, the quartermaster was nowhere to be found.

Suddenly, the aide and those around him heard shouting from the briefing room. Returning, the aide saw the Commander fallen, arching his back high, writhing in agony, clutching his throat, his face dripping with sweat. Medics were called, but it was far too late when they arrived. It would later emerge that the tea served to the Commander had been laced with far above the lethal dose of strychnine. A militiaman had also turned up dead, his neck wrung out of it's socket and uniform stolen.

Heading away from the setting sun, towards Khalin, a car holding drove into the night. Stocky, powerfully built, bearded and disinteresting, he blended in well. One hand on the wheel, and another on a stolen radio, he had been listening to Khaliniz Brigade radio chatter with detached satisfaction, before taking a sat-phone from his inside pocket and dialling a previously agreed number, speaking a series of codewords. Poisoning was not his outfit's normal modus operandi; but against such a well protected target, soft and discreet approaches were called for.

Back in Al-Qādisiyyah, General Ahmad Abbas Khan was sipping his own, pleasantly strychnine-free tea, toasting a characteristically successful operation by Major Reza Siah Tabrizian and his fellow operatives of the Special Intelligence and Interdiction Group, before picking up a secure line to inform the Lakhzov ambassador accordingly.

Peter had been joined by his Minister of Defence and brother in law Adam Sheppard who was walking the Emperor through the various options that were potentially possible depending on what unfolded on the ground, there were so many variables at work, Adam was busy pointing things out as he had done to Peter before though this time there was no Iona stood there with them giving her input - this was something Peter missed as his late wife had always been able to offer a fresh perspective it was a role Renee hadn't taken on yet, though she probably would over time.

"Peter." a voice said coming into the room, it was his Chief of Staff Kumiko Arkwright she was just hanging up the phone "You can forget about half of these options." Peter looked around and noticed the grin on Kumiko's face
"She didn't?" Peter asked
"Yep Sakura's got a deal." Kumiko said "Peacekeeping force on the ground, no fly zone in the air, peacekeeping force jurisdiction over the Somerset-Lahkzovian border, General Fuji in command of the force."
"The girl works miracles." Peter said he'd been expecting a complete breakdown of talks in the wake of unfolding events but now there was a little hope in there "Adam get General Fuji on a plane to Somerset."
"My pleasure." Adam said

On the plane descending into Somerset Nettie walked down the cabin from getting a drink to where Achkaerin's Crown Princess Serenity Azurewind sat.
"You are not going to believe this." Serenity said "Sakura's gone and got a peacekeeping force agreed."
"Why did I spend months tearing into you guys?" Nettie asked taking a seat opposite Serenity and fastening her seat belt for landing "You get stuff done."
"All that matters is that things can now start moving." Serenity said "Our job is a lot easier now."
"Anything else?" Nettie asked
"General Fuji's flying up to join us" Serenity said as they felt the plane touch down "So explain the job to McKenna, get his permission to do what's needed and then get started. You know McKenna?"
"Spoken to him once or twice in the run up to Somerset independence." Nettie said "Reasonable man."

Governor Gregory McKenna

McKenna awaited the arrival of Ms. Taylor following rounds of discussions with Somerset officials, and Evanthe herself. Though she had made clear she would not have a decision-making role in this matter he still felt it was important to gauge her position while keeping her up-to-date. "Yes, the plane is rolling to a stop as we speak, no, there's nothing further I require of you right now. That is unless you're jettisoning your Rokkenjiman baggage early?" Gregory asked, "I know, not a topic you like to joke about," he continued, bringing the awkward silence to an end.

As he concluded his conversation with Evanthe he quickly reached out to the Ui Cennselaig mission to request their presence at the discussions. With Ui Cennselaig forces within Somerset he felt it was important that they should be fully informed of the discussions at hand.

Nettie and Serenity stepped from their plane the two of them still in conversation, the good thing was that the discussions would now be a lot more straightforward than they would otherwise have been. Now they had the authority of the Lakhzovian Government for a military presence within Lakhzovia rather than having to contemplate alternative approaches. Waiting for them was General Kakashi Fuji the man who had been put in charge of the peacekeeping operation.
"Your Highness." Kakashi said "Ms Taylor."
"General Fuji." Serenity said "I assume you've prepared for this?"
"Fortunately we prepared for various eventualities so getting a short notice call doesn't phase me." Kakashi said "We have the first wave of troops going in now to establish base camp and outposts. Jets will be in the sky within the next four hours."
"And then?" Nettie asked as the three of them walked to a nearby car that would take them to their meeting.
"And then we hope to have a meaningful presence inside the designated zones within forty eight to seventy two hours." Kakashi said "The no fly zone should be enough to safeguard for the most part. What we need now is a safe haven should things turn sour."
"So command post and humanitarian camps on Somerset soil running aid across the border." Serenity said
"Pretty much." Kakashi said
"Let's go see McKenna then." Nettie said

Kakashi, Serenity and Nettie had managed to get to where McKenna was waiting it was time to be short and to the point, they no longer had the luxury of time if things were spinning out of control, and it was possible they were then they had to move fast. If the Khaliniz Brigades were tearing into those they viewed as traitors to the cause then the Peacekeeping Force would have its hands full. And that was before factoring in the election circumstances...no this would have to be dealt with and dealt with effectively, those brigades posed a risk to the chances of a peaceful settlement of the dispute, Kakashi narrowed his eyes he'd have a long dreaded phone call to make if this continued.

"Mr McKenna." Kakashi said as they found McKenna "We need to talk fast."

"Indeed," McKenna replied, "Right this way," he continued as they piled into the car before them. "We can discuss these matters on our way, though I have a fair understanding of what to expect. Know that I'll try to accommodate to the best of my abilities. So then, who would wish to begin?"

"I'd better go first." Kakashi said "After all the sooner I tell you what I need, the sooner you can help and the sooner I can start putting a stop to the madness going on next door. I've got command of the Peacekeeping Force and I have the commitments of several nations to various elements of the operation all have agreed to follow the Rules of Engagement I've laid out. In short what I need to be able to the job is passage through Somerset airspace for the aircraft of the Peacekeeping Force, the use of airfields on your territory and permission to construct a camp that will serve as a command post as well as provisional permission to construct refugee camps should the situation go south. I will also need Peacekeeping Forces to have a presence at border checkpoints between your nation and Lakhzovia." he didn't need to emphasize that the sooner this was agreed the sooner he could give the 'go' order and the sooner the Peacekeeping Force would be able to do their duty.

Serenity and Nettie sat silently they didn't need to speak to McKenna on this issue but about the likely contingency if things did go bad.

OOC - A EM/UC post

For the last few days Royal East Moreland Air Force and Ui Cenneslaig Air Force jets operating out of Illumic Command and refuelled by parasite refuelling from the REMNS Portworth had been operating in and around the no fly zone set up in the north of the county. One of their main duties had been to accompany the nations Spotter surveillance plane, it was an asset worth its weight in gold, allowing the two nations to listen into the communications on the ground and collect several pieces of electronic data, it was during one of these flights that the operation to take Kinere Airport was picked up. There had been plans for a joint CNN operation to set up on the ground and now this had a spanner in the works.

General Katie Yacobs of East Moreland and General Seamus O'Hanley of Ui Cenneslaig sat in the Illumic control room peering at the various images they'd been given. What had once been a simple operation could now be even more tricky. "So, we go in with a first wave here" Yacobs pointed to the map, a joint Red Legion, Royal Kerns operation, take off from the carriers Portworth and your Lugaid. Three aircraft each, gives us a total of 156 men on the ground initially. We'll have them grass land, scout to the airfield, if possible make an advance. East Moreland close air support aircraft will be overhead throughout the operation, they've lots of experience of this sort of stuff and their closer" she explained to O'Hanley who nodded his agreement. "In the meantime Sea Lifter helicopters will be following in with Royal Marines on board, 10 of those gives us a total of 370 men on the ground in the second wave. The birds refuel on the way home."

"Meanwhile our Bawlbee Helicopters will put down a further 130 troops here" O'Hanley pointed to a spot at 90 degrees to the East Moreland LZ.

"If the airfield is vaccated they'll take control and secure it, we'll then begin shuttling forces in, three Munduslifters will be orbiting mid Illumic for in case of a green light, they'll land more troops and some armour, after that we open an air-bridge. If the airfield isn't viable we'll begin by having the jets find and hit some ground targets, then roll in and hopefully secure the thing." the pair nodded.

Six hours later and onboard the lead C-2 Sgt Olly Thomas was double checking his weapon for the thrid time. "You reckon this new LT will piss himself" Barks asked him loudly over the hum of the engines, a rather fresh faced officer looked up nervously from across the aircrafts body. He had been assigned to them since Lt. James Gillespie had gone rouge, something the unit was still shocked by his deception as a Bene Gesserit terrorist.

"I'm not cleaning it up" was all Olly replied as the loadmaster signalled they were beginning their descent. Ahead of them Thomas could just about see out the pilots window where to him just appeared to be darkness, to the pilot and his night vision goggles however the selected makeshift airstrip was looming into view. The Red's stood bracing themselves for a rough landing but ready to get out quick. Olly caught sight of the exhaust heat of two jets heading off towards the airfield, low and fast and armed with RAPTOR pods they were going to gather information for the Reds. The aircraft bounced, one Legionnaire stumbled but was hauled upright as the door opened and one by one the Red's exited, almost before the last man was out the aircraft bounced over the uneven ground and back into the air. "Time to haul ass" Olly barked as the two other Red Legion transports loads emptied.

Around 400 meters away to the North he could make out the shadows of the Ui Cenneslaig Royal Kerns doing likewise, Major Stephen Lafferty leading his commando's swiftly away from their own aircraft. "Reds to our right" he motioned as they spread out in the Lakhzovian countryside. "It's a grand evening for a stroll" the officer smirked as he shook Olly's hand, "Major Lafferty sir." he introduced himself to what he assumed was the commanding officer of the Red's.

"The Ruperts back there somewhere, Sgt.Thomas, or Olly if your not a twat" the ever informal Red replied as the pair began their 3km tab towards the airfield hoping the flyboys overhead found the locals gone.

It took them around 40 minutes to reach their laying up point, a spot just a few hundred meters short of the airfield but providing some cover. It was now down to the Air Force intelligence guys back at Illumic Command to give them an assessment of the site based on the RAPTOR pods, analysts were trawling through hundreds of images and the workroom was full of people calling for second opinions before committing themselves, the whole process from overflight to giving out the information took less than 30 minutes and Sgt.Thomas and Major Lafferty got the blow by blow into their earpieces.

In Somerset a message at the East Moreland liason buzzed off the printer, an injured Red Legionnaire kept on for such admin duties picked it up, put it in an envelope and headed off to find General Kakashi Fuji. It didn't take him long and Corporal Paul Abrahams saluted with his left arm, his one good arm, before taking the note out his combat trouser pocket and handing it over.

Quote from: Letter

Dear General Fuji

As you are no doubt aware Kinere Airport has recently been targeted by Khaliniz Brigades forces. This could massively interfere with operations to secure the intended peacekeeping zone and no fly zone. Acting on electronic intelligence it was determined that an immediate special forces operation was required to secure the airfield, and as such a joint CNN operation formed of East Moreland and Ui Cenneslaig forces is underway to secure the airfield. It is hoped by 7am local time the airfield will be open to an air bridge operating between Illumic Command and Kinere, should this be the case expect to have some 1,000 CNN forces on the ground by the end of that day.

We shall keep you posted of the operation.

Signed

General Katie Yacobs
East Moreland Army

Brigadier Kelly
Red Legion

General Seamus O'Hanley
Ui Cennesliag Army

Back at the airfield the joint CNN force watched waiting for the order to advance, be it under cover of air strikes or a simple stroll.

McKenna listened as Kakashi spoke, jotting notes at times. "We've seen stories like this before several times, haven't we? The causes may be different, the players, the plots of land, but it's the same arc that reaches across our history, forming a constant tie to even the earliest of our ancestors. Now I've spoke with the Lord Protector throughout this situation, and she has stated her support for whatever course of action I decide upon."

Pausing, McKenna nodded to Kakashi with an outreached hand. "Somerset is prepared to offer whatever is requested in this matter, though we can both see where this would place Somerset in a difficult position should unforeseen developments present themselves. I'll need some assurances to bring back to the Grand Council, however, I think we'll be able to have a plan forward in hand in swift order. Furthermore, there is the old Joint Forces Base on the Island that may be of some use in operations moving forward, though such use can be discussed later."

OOC- Agreed between myself, Nord and Lakhzovia

The call came in from Illumic Command that the low level aircraft where weapons free, in pairs they worked, one standing off monitoring the positions of forces on the ground with the RAPTOR pod while the second of the pair made runs in launching air to ground missiles at larger targets and using canon to strafe the smaller, the first runs done the positions were reversed and the process repeated. All the time members of the Cenneg and Morelander special forces teams made their way to the perimeter, the glow of fires around the airfield indicating the aircraft where finding their targets.

The Khaliniz Brigades however weren't exactly unprepared several heavy machine gun positions were firing at the inbound aircraft, however a combination of pure speed and shock and awe made this rather ineffective, however it was only a matter of time until these positions spotted the ground advance and the teams came under fire. For the next ten minutes through a combination of air strikes and exchanges of ground fire the Khaliniz units slowly gave the perimeter. A new sound now filled the air as the helicopters bringing in the reserve forces of Marines were inbound, soon some 200 more men would be in the fight and then surely the Khaliniz Brigade would find themselves flanked. The first Cenneg helicopter came in low across the fence line, it was far closer than they'd arranged and came under heavy fire, Red Legionnaires and Kerns Commando's did the best they could to suppress the heavy machine guns but it was too late, the pilot was hit and the aircraft went into a crazy spin, its tail hitting the ground flipping the aircraft onto its side and smashing it onto the ground, the aircrafts momentum kept it going and before long it had stopped just around ten to twenty meters away from a Khaliniz position. As the few unharmed men tried to exit heavy machine gun fire hit them hard. The bulk of the wreck now blocked the field of fire of the CNN forces and as such the Reds and Kerns split to bring fire from the flanks, this hadn't been quick enough though to stop the Khaliniz grabbing a few of the wounded who were stumbling from the rear rank. A second helicopter had touched down in the rear of the CNN advance and Cenneg soldiers sprinted down the ramp towards their downed comrades, it was a mistake as several Khaliniz Brigade gunmen had used the downed helicopter as a firing position and poured heavier fire upon their advance, it took several of the Royal Kerns sharpshooters to minimise that effect but not before the momentum was slowed.

The door gunner of the departing Cenneg Bawlbee helicopter now brought his minigun to bear on the slowly retreating Khaliniz Brigades, it only jerked itself higher once a technical vehicle with its own heavy machine gun appeared, the lifespan of this vehicle was short lived as one of the fast jets had been guided onto it by its partners RAPTOR pod and a well placed burst on canon fire caused a satisfying red glow.

For the next hour or so the CNN forces slowly advanced, first across the airfield and then into the building complex opposite, the Khaliniz Brigades making a brave account of it without the use of air power. It was only once the last unit holding out of the right flank of the runway began to be pinned down that a series of three explosions rocked the air, several Red Legionnaires had been caught up in the blast and their screams filled the air. The last of the Sea Lifter helicopters bringing in Royal Marines was hastily turned into a medevac helicopter taking those caught up in the cluster blast which had ripped three craters in the airfield tarmac back to the safety of the fleet. Twenty minutes after that it was clear the Khaliniz Brigade had disappeared into the night, their exit illuminated by several fires caused by burning vehicles of the airfields service fleet, additionally a hangar was on fire, storage for some of the fluids used in the day to day running of the airfield. As the Marines and Spec Ops groups prepared their own defensive perimeter and a new squadron of aircraft took positions overhead the various commanders meet in the Air Traffic Control towers ground floor office.

"We got numbers?" Major Lafferty asked.

"7 Reds KIA, 6 casevaced, 5 Kerns KIA, 3 casevaced, 17 Royal Marines KIA, 3 Casevaced, 22 UC Marines KIA, 6 casevaced, 10 missing presumed captured. We got about 50 dead Khaliniz, about 20 wounded, another 5 in custody waiting for a chopper to the fleet." Olly Thomas read out the lists.

"Where's your officer?" Lafferty asked still not sure why a Sergeant seemed to be commanding the Moreland special ops team.

"I believe a chunk of concrete got him in the head, chances are he'll make it 8 KIA" Olly sounded rather unconcerned, the officer had been with them three weeks and frankly wasn't a patch on Gillespie.  "Bigger problem is the runway if FUBAR'd, at least for anything fast or heavy. The boys are checking to see if any other devices are left, looks like they essentially put some big packs of C4 under the strip in drainage pipes, packed them with nasty shit and blew them, way of stopping or advance as well as damaging the strip. Once we've got it secure we'll fill in the holes with what debris we've got and then get the next round of helo's from the King Robert to bring in some of the Marston Matting, we'll get that bolted over the top, won't be perfect but should mean we can get some of the lighter transports in which can bring in proper engineering gear."

"Nice" Lafferty was impressed with the efficency of the Red's he'd heard good things and could see why.

"The brass back home will let the Achkaerin bossman know we're kind of semi open for business."  Olly picked up his gear and headed back out to check on the airstrip teams.

Mind boggling Serenity thought, typical wasn't it? There was no need for an assurance in truth because the assurances already existed as far as Achkaerin was concerned Somerset was the successor to Seaforth and Seaforth had been an Achkaerinese ally, Serenity knew if she went off for a drive towards the Lakhzovian border she'd come to cities where during the Eugenics War there had been fighting, where Achkaerinese soldiers had died, if she went north she'd come to Halstead Village where the Seaforth Catholic Church had strung up and hung civilians for no apparent reason, with Achkaerinese soldiers having already fought and died on this soil there was no way that memory was going to be disgraced. But if it was assurances McKenna wanted it was assurances he'd get.

"I doubt Kadassa is stupid enough to let this escalate to an extent where threats would extend beyond borders nor do I think that any militia involved are going to instigate things beyond the Lakhzovian borders to do so in the manner you are concerned about would be for them to lose their position in this, if they take things out on the international community they seal their own fate, likewise so would pro Lakhzovia factions. You know as well as I do that this country of yours is the remains of Seaforth a lot of Achkaerinese soldiers fought and died here not that long ago." Serenity said slowly "We don't forget that sort of thing so the assurances you want already exist and even if it didn't one would presume an action against Somerset would at the moment concern Pyrena which in turn through treaties and organisations could involve plenty of other nations that is surely assurance enough."

"Now then Mr McKenna" Kakashi said "While I appreciate you trying to accommodate my requests your suggestion of the Joint Forces Base is I'm afraid  impractical for our purposes, we need airfields and facilities around the Lakhzovian border area, we cannot afford to have jets having to burn a third to half of their tanks just to get into position, no we need them closer to the area we need them to be able to be in position with as little flight time as possible."

OOC- Apologies if this is confusing but regard the first part of this post as having happened the day that the airport was taken by the EM/UC op.

Kakashi had stepped outside while Serenity and Nettie continued to hash out the details of the peacekeeping forces access to Somerset airspace and the like, as he stood thinking his phone rang.
"Fuji." he said answering it "Have they really?" he was being informed of the Morelander and Cenneg capture of Kinere airport Thank the Heaven's for small mercies he thought at least someone was being proactive, not that Achkaerin weren't it was just a bit more of a logistical issue to get troops and assets into position though not by much "Issue deployment orders to wave one forces within the Achkaerinese contingent and let's get Citadel built. Patch me through to the Seònaid Ayanami" there was to be no more waiting around.

The INS Seònaid Ayanami was where it had sat ever since this crisis had become a matter of great concern, in the Peniche Bay, standing on the bridge of the carrier was the skipper Captain Jade Watson they'd been sat waiting for the go sign for a while then the radio sounded.

"Captain Watson." Jade said answering it
"This is General Fuji." Kakashi's voice came over the radio "Sentinel is go I repeat Sentinel is go, get the jets up."
"Yes sir." Jade said, she put the radio down "Inform Squadron Commander Frost to deploy his jets, get the Snow Owl up."
"Yes ma'am." the nearest officer said

Over the intervening week things from an Achkaerinese perspective were swinging into action, without much in the way of ability to land heavier transports Achkaerin had resorted to the use of EMAC Heavy Lifters to do much of the heavy lifting but everything was still waiting for Somerset to say "Yes" or for East Moreland to say "Runway's ready" Kakashi had been getting gradually more and more irritated with each passing day as nothing happened on the Somerset end Looks like East Moreland again. he thought, still at least they were doing something with their jets, he tapped his foot he was really beginning to miss dealing with Su Mai right about now.

"I know these things but," he looked to ensure his phone had truly disconnected from his conversation with Evanthe, "the Council has been joined by those previously from Rishiri. They still carry some of their Rokkenjima tendencies which, in all honesty, I would rather do without. With that out of the way, and with the authority to act as I see fit, let us get to work. The soil, water and airways of Somerset are at your disposal for so long as is required."

The EMAC Spotter had been providing electronic survelliance of the airfield for 48 hours, ever since the teams had landed and taken the real estate. It's optical systems and various data gathering collectors kept a constant real time tactical picture being relayed to the various people making decisions. The runway was nearing the final stages of repair and the forces around the airfield had swelled to some 500 men, mainly from engineering and construction units. They had planned this evening to hopefully begin bringing in the heavy stuff. "Sir, we've a SAM trace" a Corporal manning one of the screens called out. The Flight Lieutenant in the back headed over and examined the screen where a chinagraph cross marked the spot it had come up, they expected a second reading but when it came it came from around 100 meters further north. "That's gotta be mobile" the Corporal said rather surprised, "It Lakhzovian?" he asked, they'd been told the Khaliniz Brigade had no mobile SAM's, yet here the evidence was suggesting otherwise. The Corporal marked the second position and waited for the next ping, it came shortly after, twenty meters further East of the first, "It's mobile for sure" he confirmed.

"Optics try getting me a view at grid 567763, you're looking for some kind of vehicle." The Flight Lt moved from screen to screen as two men began manovering the aircrafts massive viewing camera's into position, the pilot was listening in to all this and banked the aircraft to keep the target area within view.

"Yes Sir" the two men slowly moved their joysticks turning and zooming cameras as they explored the area. "It's hard to see sir, the things in that wood somewhere, we can't get a clear view unless we get lower."

"That'd put us at risk" the pilot confirmed as he banked once more.

"We'll keep marking the route, hopefully it has a pattern" the analyst spent the next two hours plotting it on maps but no pattern came, it seemed the driver knew they were probably hunting it and as such kept rather randomly driving through the woods. It all meant that suddenly bringing anything in by air would become a risk, they'd need to find it and kill it before they could bring anything of real weight in, and that included manpower. As one Spotter handed over to another they took up the duties of trying to find this SAM, it had now been silent for an hour, but suddenly it came on again. The whole thing was beginning to get to be an issue, they couldn't hit what they couldn't directly find and they couldn't risk bringing transport aircraft in with a Mobile SAM system in the area.

Back at the airfield the Morelanders and the Cenneg commands got together in the morning they'd send a joint patrol out to see if they could find that Mobile SAM, it had to become their first priority. Around twenty men, ten Red Legionnaires and ten Commando's would go out and covertly search the area, paint the vehicle with a laser designator and let the Air Force do the rest from a safe distance. It was however getting dark and so the teams were told to get a good nights sleep. Olly Thomas curled up in his shelter built in a hanger, his hammock making for a comfy nights sleep, a gentle hum of generators helping him doze off. It was a sleep that couldn't have lasted more than two hours when three explosions in quick succession woke him. "STAND TOO! STAND TOO!" came the call and the various units scurried to take up their predetermined positions at the perimeter of the airfield. Olly and Barks sprinted across to the slit trench they had been assigned a smouldering hole in the runway visible as they went. "Bastards" Olly muttered, it looked like someone had infiltrated the position and planted some device to damage the area they'd rebuilt that morning, another bright glow of flames was visible where a pallet of building material now burned, and from the far end of the runway the landing light system was a twisted mess of metal, meaning now only visual approaches would be possible. "Better pray we don't get rain or fog" Barks mused as they took up their position. They stayed there until morning but nothing came, "In and Out, stuff on a timer?" Barks asked.

"It's how I'd do it" Olly couldn't help but smile, "May need to sideline SAM hunting and find how they got on"

SITREP FORCES IN COUNTRY
CLASSIFIED

As of 0600 local time this is the situation regarding forces in Lakhzovia.

1. The airfield at Kinere is unservicable and unable to land aircraft of any type. It is expected that at present time it will take a further 5 days minimum to be able to bring the airfield up to standards to accept light military aircraft. Furthermore due to damage caused to landing lighting systems any aircraft will only be able to land under Visual Flight Rules and with no support.

2. The Khalinz Brigade have been misrepresented. They are more capable than local intelligence suggested and recent aerial sorties by battlefield surveillance aircraft indicate that they are in possession of multiple SAM launches including mobile ones. As such airspace is extremely hostile at this point and any aircraft flying below 3,000 meters and slower than Mach 1.5 are to be considered highly vulnerable.

3. Road links in the area have been destroyed using demoltions equipment. This has seen many mountain passes blocked. This has been confirmed by our battlefield surveilance aircraft who have witnessed several explosions and have imagery of rubble strewn passes. It is estimated from imagery that heavy engineering equipment and explosives would be needed to clear the route.

Situation Summary

East Moreland and Ui Cenneslaig forces currently in country number just short of 800 men. They have enough food and water to continue operations for 72 hours. Currently there are approximately 10 members of this force missing persumed captured. Khalinz Brigade forces are operational in the area and their number is unconfirmed but thought to number in the region of a thousand. They are well armed and equipped with Mobile SAM systems. This in effect has, because of the road situation isolated the forces in country. This situation has been brought about by the pedestrian nature in which operations where prepared for before announcement of intention, this allowed Khalinz Brigade forces to anticipate possible CTO actions and take the airfield, as such it was necessary to move immediately to ensure forces could not dig in. We now stand in a situation where no forces beyond those available immediately in Somerset and East Moreland are capable of immediate response.

Recommendations

1. Continuous air support to be provided by sorties flown by multi-role fighter aircraft armed for ground attack missions flying from high altitude.

2. Naval assets in the Illumic to be prepared to offer missile based fire support should the need arise.

3. In 48 hours systematic air drops of rations to begin via the Royal East Moreland Air Force using high altitude transport aircraft escorted by multi-role fighters.

4. Forces to establish a beach-head in Somerset to prepare for operations should air bridge opportunities arise.

5. Negotiations to begin with Lakhzovian government regarding movement of troops from Peniche Bay.

6. Negotiations with no combative Utmen factions to begin in an attempt to halt Khalinz Brigade actions.

The report made for grim reading as far as Kakashi was concerned, the Somerset hold up was beginning to bite now. He was presently pacing around the Achkaerinese base camp that had been set up in Somerset while forces were assembled to roll into Lakhzovia, but that was before someone on the other side of the border most likely the Khalinz Brigades had decided to put a load of hurdles in the way, the explosions had been audible in the camp as they were only a few miles on the Somerset side of the border. Kakashi hadn't known what they were at the time but all his battlefield experience, and that he'd pulled the same trick in the Maru Mountain range when fighting in the Toshikawan Civil War back in the nineteen eighties, told him what it might have been.

"General" someone said, this was Captain Sarah Culshaw, an officer with Achkaerin's Military Defence Initiative a department within the Achkaerinese military responsible for things to do with satellites, threat assessment, missile control etc. Sarah was the daughter of the head of the Achkaerinese Army and the Granddaughter of two of the smartest consultants the Achkaerinese military had ever had.
"Yes Captain?" Kakashi asked
"We have the surveillance footage." Sarah said
"How bad is it?" Kakashi asked
"See for yourself sir." Sarah said

Sarah led Kakashi to one of the tents where they were running aerial surveillance operations from. On duty was Flight Leader Irma Quartermain sat at the controls, monitors in front of her.
"Run us through it Irma." Sarah said
"Following the explosions we got an Owl up as quick as we could and I've flown it down the two pass's designated B12 and B11." Irma said "What you're seeing on the monitor is the B12 route. Someone's collapsed the side of the pass's creating obstacles. Reminds me of doing the hurdles on sport's day at school to be honest."
"Both pass's the same?" Kakashi asked
"Yes sir." Irma said
"Someone's got a creative thought or two." Kakashi said "They want to slow us down. Stay on the surveillance."
"Yes sir." Irma said
"Sarah come with me." Kakashi said

Kakashi and Sarah headed from that tent into another where a map was laid out on the table, lines drawn and other senior officers standing ready these were Colonel William Yates, Captain Sam Venables, First Lieutenant Jess Thrace and Major Fleur Mishima.

"You've all read the report?" Kakashi asked, there were nods "Makes for grim reading doesn't it? But I'm not about to let a load of militia take the high ground. I'm certainly not about to let them have it all their own way. Fleur sit rep?"
"Armored Corp is essentially out until we've got the roads open again, we may be able to move some of the lighter vehicles through if we can get a clear route." Fleur said "And as we don't particularly fancy our chances with the Heavy Lifters so we can't easily hop over the obstacles."
"Colonel Yates, stand the Alpha wave to and prepare for insertion into Lakhzovia." Kakashi said "We maintain aerial surveillance, spot any SAM sites and mobiles in the vicinity and neutralize them, once we clear those the Alpha wave goes in under darkness. What have we got in the Channel naval wise?"
"Handful of vessels and those of our partners in this." Sarah said "Plenty of missile capability."
"Right then I'm initiating the recommendations of the report." Kakashi said "Do we have a Kryptonite Class out there?"
"Yes." Sarah said
"Get me the Captain." Kakashi said "We'd better start doing something about those hurdles."

In the Illumic Channel the INS Kryptonite was just entering Somerset waters, sat in the command chair was the ships skipper Captain Lily Falconer she brushed at her hair,
"Incoming message ma'am." the communications officer said
"Let's give SCION a whirl." Lily said "Put it through." much like Rokkenjima's ICON system the Achkaerinese SCION included many of the same features making it part videophone so it was no surprise that on one of the bridge monitors Kakashi appeared sat at a desk.
"Captain Falconer." Kakashi said
"General Fuji." Lily said
"We're going to be uploading some information to you shortly I need you to standby to act on this." Kakashi said
"Sir?" Lily asked
"The Khalinz Brigade have decided to play stalling games." Kakashi said "I need you to help me turn the tables."
"Ready and willing sir." Lily said
"Good await further communication." Kakashi said

With the call done, Lily got out of her chair and sighed, running a hand across her brow she looked at her XO Commander Houghton
"The information's coming in." Houghton said "Is this for real?"
"Looks like it." Lily said reading it over her XO's shoulder "Make the preparations."
"Aye ma'am." Houghton said

In the No Fly Zone the Achkaerinese jets continued to go about their work two Wyvern's flown by Squadron Commander Tommy Frost and Lieutenant Tori Raynor, callsigns Iceman and Dark Angel respectively were patrolling towards the centre of the No Fly Zone.

"All callsigns this is an update be advised Khalinz brigade known to have mobile SAM capability, caution advised in vicinity of Kinere Airport, pilots advised that ground attack missions have been authorised." the message came over the radio frequency.
"Great." Tommy said as the jets continued on their way "That's next on our route isn't it?"
"Yes." Tori said
"Stay alert then." Tommy said "All AAF callsigns this is Iceman, Harpys on patrol, Wyverns on special. Captain Ryder has the Zone."
"We're coming up on Kinere." Tori said "ETA fifteen minutes"
"Thank the Heavens we've worked with East Moreland so many times." Tommy said, he got back on the radio "This is Iceman calling Badger...repeat Iceman calling Badger. Coming in high with wingmate south east towards Kinere on No Fly Zone patrol please advise of any targets in the area."

On the Seònaid Ayanami, Jade was walking through the ship heading to what had become a regular appointment over the last few weeks as the whole situation within Lakhzovia had gradually come to the boil. She stepped into a set of quarters that had a guard on them, not because the person occupying them was a danger but because he was potentially under threat, this person, this man was Agran Tsargari the former leader of the Democratic Alliance within Lakhzovia, he was setting up a chessboard - this was the regular appointment the pair had every day or so, Jade would come down and they'd talk about various things - history, ethics, philosophy, culture were the favorites there sometimes they'd play a game such as chess. But today Jade had another thing to talk about.

"We need to know more about the factions within the Utman." Jade said as she sat down opposite Agran, the white pieces in front of her it seemed he was a gentleman, she made her first move "Anything you can tell us would be greatly appreciated."

In Valtheim the political aspect was on and there was no hiding it Emperor Peter Azurewind was sat at the kitchen table about to dig into his lunch of a chicken sandwich, he like Kakashi had read the report and he knew the importance and advantages of political elements in terms of negotiations he glanced at the kitchen counter where Nettie Taylor was making herself a drink.
"Have you seen this?" Peter asked
"I have." Nettie said
"Recommendation?" Peter asked
"General Fuji has implemented the recommendations but feels that number five would be better handled on a government level." Nettie said "My advice is don't go cap in hand to Lakhzovia without some leverage."
"Noted." Peter said "Ok get Mark and then you two go and see the Lakhzovian ambassador."
"And the leverage?" Nettie asked
"Let's have Saki pay a visit to our political asylum seeker." Peter said
"The detective?" Nettie asked
"We need to use everything at our disposal." Peter said
"I'll let her know." Nettie said

Having received permission from Somerset authorities the Imperial Rokkenjiman Armed Forces had began preparing for their move from QAMB to sovereign territory in the Commonwealth. An initial authorization would see 2,500 Rokkenjiman troops transferred to the border region with Lakhzovia to partake in peacekeeping operations on the ground, while Rokkenjiman aircraft had been cleared to operate from Somerset airfields. This would see a variety of craft, from jets to helicopters, ready to partake in the no-fly zone while lending air support to ground operations. HA-52 stealth helicopters were also being transferred to provide support in situations demanding of stealth.

Rokkenjiman forces are presently undertaking operations in preparation for ground, air and naval operations in concert with coalition forces in the region. At your disposal will be an initial deployment of 2,500 Rokkenjiman forces on the ground, fifteen HA-52 helicopters, one squadron of RK-80s, as well as IRN assets presently located in the Peniche Bay. I defer to you as to where our forces are most needed at present and will direct my forces as demanded by the present needs of the mission.

Rowe out.

Rowe had built a reputation of discipline in his command, routing out the type of individuals and mindset which had led to the sort of missteps seen in the Marseilles campaign as well as the errant missile test which had taken place in the Illumic. In his mind it was upon Rokkenjiman forces to prove themselves as team players, leaving behind the sort of arrogance which had alienated partners in the past. It was also not lost upon him that he was the most likely candidate to replace Marshal Admiral Cole in heading the broader Rokkenjiman Military, thus presenting an opportunity for him to show the Empress the true depth of his capabilities. In this, the room for errors quite simply did not exist nor could their possibility be afforded.

Medaber Mamul Civil Hospital, Khalin

It was 6 am when the first casualties began to arrive at the emergency room of the the Medaber Mamul Hospital. When the first convulsing patient had been brought to them they had initially thought that they were suffering an epileptic seizure, however their failure to respond to standard treatment and the worsening of their condition perplexed the doctors who sent for a neurological consultant.

When a second patient, and then a third were admitted exhibiting the same symptoms it dawned on the doctors that they were faced with something potentially more serious. Comparing patient notes it was clear that those admitted were from the same village on the outskirts of Tamsdin, a major town north of Khalin on the frontline between the hand of Emet and Khaliniz Brigades.

Two hours later the hospital was being overwhelmed with cases that were being brought to them by relatives, and volunteer aid workers, some of who were themselves exhibiting signs of poisoning. It was then that the blood tests from the first patient had come back positive for sarin exposure.

Doctor Ranitz held the results in his hand and stared blankly for a moment a the page. The patient in question had died an hour ago, however at least they now knew what they were dealing with; though given the nature of the crisis many hundreds or thousands of people could already be dead.

His head heavy with a deep sense of unreality he headed for his office and closed the door, picking up the receiver of his phone he dialled the number for the Lakhzov Emergency Coordinating Committee, a government agency responsible for coordinating responses to disasters.

"Hello, this is Doctor Arvan Ranitz of Medaber Mamul Civil Hospital. We have confirmed cases of sarin exposure for multiple patients. All cases localised to Tamsdin Municiple Region, indicative of deployment of sarin chemical agents in the area." he said with all the stoic professionalism he could muster.

Back at High Command in Ui Cenneslaig teams of planners had an hour ago been made aware of the suspected Sarin gas attack, they switched between the various reports trying to ascertain as much information as they could. It was only then that a young Private, recently joining the Intelligence Corps piped up. "Sir, we've an issue" he motioned to the TV, he hit pause on their digital box and wound back the image a few seconds before stopping it again. "That's a UC uniform sir." he pointed at the screen, the words seemed to hit everyone at once and their was a silence that filled the room as people turned and looked. A female sergeant leafed through the photos she had in a pile on her desk.

"Corporal Tim O'Keefe" the Sergeant said grimly, "he was one of the group who were missing, assumed captured."

The video was played again, there in the background as the Lakhzov media filmed the scene the Corporal could be seen again as a medic covered him with a sheet leaving him on the floor. "OK, this is now our priority" the rooms commander, a Major from the Intelligence Corps yelled, "I want confirmation that this is O'Keefe, I want it confirmed what this mess is and I want it yesterday." Phonecalls were quickly made, e-mails sent and the room became a hive of activity.

It meant that thirty minutes after the images had beamed out that two guards from the Ui Cenneslaig embassy where on the road heading to the hospital, they had pulled all the medical gear they could afford to lose and headed to Medaber Mamul Civil Hospital. Once they arrived they asked for the lead physician. "We're here from Ui Cenneslaig, we've brought a few medi kits," These were full of various bits and pieces, mainly designed for supporting infantry units in combat but they figured every little would help, "We're looking for a Cenneg soldier, name of O'Keefe, we have reason to believe he's here."

Achkaerin's Military Defence Initiative hadn't been as busy as this for years, the day to day commander Kara Thornton looked up from the round table that she worked from, looking at the large screens on the wall, the news reports about the Sarin were playing on the monitors.
"Boss." the units senior analyst Richard Weaver said coming over to the table and sitting next to her "General Fuji's on the SCION channel." Kara looked at her laptop and pressed a few buttons within moments Kakashi's image was on the screen
"General Fuji." Kara said
"Colonel Thornton." Kakashi said
"This is Richard Weaver my senior analyst." Kara said "What can we do for you sir?"
"This supposed Sarin attack, what's the assessment?" Kakashi said
"Assuming for the moment that it is a Sarin attack sir." Kara said "We have to question how it happened."
"As in how they got the weapon?" Kakashi asked
"As you're aware General in concert with Achkaerin Intelligence the MDI tracks high risk chemical shipments and supplies." Richard said "We have no intelligence on any of these going missing."
"Meaning?" Kakashi asked
"If it is Sarin sir then it originated within Lakhzovia." Richard said "The reports from the chemical plant incident suggest that the agents were Sarin precursors so it's possible."
"I see." Kakashi said "Recommendations?"
"Sir we need to know what this is before we can make an assessment." Kara said
"I'll get on it." Kakashi said "Kara I need you to have a word with Intel, find a trace of Uttaman."
"I'll pass it on." Kara said

In Somerset Kakashi closed the SCION channel and sighed, he looked across at where Sarah Culshaw stood
"You know what this reminds me of?" Kakashi asked
"No idea." Sarah said
"Cult of Helus genocide." Kakashi said "Same three nations. Only Cenneg and Achkaerinese forces have switched positions this time."
"Sir you wanted to see me?" a new officer asked entering the tent this was Lieutenant Kama Asa of the Achkaerin Air Force she was the legal officer assigned to the action.
"What would protocol be in regards to this alledged Sarin attack?" Kakashi asked
"Legally we need verification that it is a Sarin attack." Kama said "If it is then whoever used it is liable to prosecution."
"But we need proof?" Kakashi asked
"Yes sir." Kama said
"There's another more disturbing possibility." Sarah said "The chemical plant incident reports indicated Sarin precursors but..."
"But what if they weren't precursors?" Kakashi asked, Sarah nodded
"If the Sarin was already there then that would mean..." Kama said
"That there's something really amiss here." Kakashi said "And that's being polite."
"What do you want to do sir?" Sarah asked
"Lakhzovia's going to use this as justification for intervention." Kakashi said standing "Let's do what we do best."

Kakashi led the way from his personal tent to the command tent in the camp.
"Sir." Irma said she handed Kakashi a satelitte image with markings it was of the mountain passes.
"Summary?" Kakashi asked
"We've identified a total of fourteen SAM sites in the mountain pass area." Irma said
"Targeted?" Kakashi asked
"Confirmation from the Kryptonite came five minutes ago sir." Irma said, Kakashi glanced at his watch it was getting on for 22:00 hours, the sun had set
"And the rest?" Sarah asked indicating other markings on the image
"According to UAV footage dug in troops." Irma said "Someone's going to a lot of trouble to keep us out."

"Ok then." Kakashi said looking at the map they had of Lakhzovia "At 22:30 the Kryptonite opens fire, that takes out the SAM's, then it's Raven's, Wasps and those Rokkenjiman HA-52's, we'll strafe the passes from the high ground through the night. Meanwhile ASF go up and over, Colonel Yates your call how to deploy them I need watch dogs at the far end of the pass's, troops ready to hit from that end and a team assigned to Tamsdin."
"Yes sir." Yates said
"We'll have Rokkenjiman troops advance from the Somerset side of the passes and Achkaerinese from the Lahkzovian side, hit the opposition from both sides and clear them out of there, that should create a safer environment to clear the obstacles and open the road into Lakhzovia."
"And then sir?" Yates asked
"Then we review and adapt based on circumstances." Kakashi said "Pass out the orders. This goes like clockwork."

On the Kryptonite Lily sat in her chair.
"Captain." the weapons officer Lt Maxwell said "Weapons are locked, all green across the board."
"Thank you Lieutenant." Lily said she looked at her watch it was approaching 22:30 hours, if there was one thing she was proud of it was that in her career as a commanding officer in the navy she'd never had to fire a shot and now that was all about to change. She kept a beedy eye on her watch until it ticked over to 22:30 she gave the order "Fire."
"Fire aye." Maxwell said, he hit the button.

Charybdis missiles were let loose over the next few moments each locked on a targeted site, it would undoubtedly provide quite the show in country, Lily watched the missiles streak off into the distance it was in motion now.

Military Central Command, New Nakim

Kadassa was sitting at the head of the conference table studying the documents in front of him, on the far wall was projected a map of Transmecuria overlaid with icons denoting military assets. While Kadassa perused the documents he listened as General Shuziye gave his briefing.

“The intel we have received from the Prefecture agents on the ground have allowed us to pinpoint a number of critical Utman sites including command structures, weapons depots and defensive installations. We also have indications that they are minimally armed in regards to anti-air capability, apparently they only possess outdated MPADs left over from the United Peoples’ Republic. We therefore intend to launch a night raid on Utman positions in advance of a main push by our forces down Expressway 4 towards Kinere, Shalmi Meira has said that the Prefecture liaison with the Hand of Emet has briefed them regarding coordination in securing the surrounding country freeing the bulk of our forces for a shock assault on the heart of the rebellion. Models give us an estimate of taking Kinere within four days” said Shuziye.

“Very good” said Kadassa looking up from his papers before tapping his finger on one of the pages “I see here that the models are estimating a large number of Utman civilian casualities?”

“Yes Mr President. Unfortunately since the Khaliniz Brigades have now realised that they are a target of the international forces they have shifted to an asymmetric strategy, they have therefore embedded themselves in civilian population centres. For example in Tebruk their commanders have set up in the Civil Hospital, in Maasin they are storing munitions in a Primary School and have set up defensive fire positions in the densely pack old city. While we will of course endeavour to minimise casualties, but we are expecting a high rate of collateral damage.”

Kadassa frowned “The international community won’t stand for that. While we can make a reasonable case for intervention on the back of the Tamsdin attack, if our response results in excessive civilian causalities we will be construed as the aggressors. Is there any way we can absolve ourselves of responsibility?” he sat deep in thought for a moment before speaking again “Could we perhaps order an immediate civilian evacuation? Establish a humanitarian corridor toward the Somerset Border?”

“There are some issues Sir. First such an evacuation order is unlikely to have a wide uptake until strikes actually begin. Second intelligence suggests that the Khaliniz are active in the mountain passes on the roads to Somerset, these are likely to become conflict zones in their own right.”

“General. My concern is not about whether these rats survive; my concern is whether we are held culpable for it. If we order an evacuation and they refuse to evacuate then the blame falls on their own heads, or on the Khaliniz who we can blame for holding them as human shields; we remain untainted ethically as we can be shown to have done all within our power to prevent civilian losses. As for sending them in to a potential conflict zone, we shall make our announcement of the humanitarian corridor publicly as a result the coalition forces will either be forced to abort their assault on the passes or be responsible for those deaths themselves, either outcome suits our purposes.” He paused for a moment before moving on “Now in regards to the no fly zone, is this going to present us with any problems?”

“We do not believe this will be an issue. The lack of coalition anti-air sites within Transmecuria combined with the anti-air cover that the Khaliniz have established in the mountains give us clear operating space over Transmecuria.”

“Excellent, in that case I approve the operation.”

Emergency Coordination Committee Broadcast

Lakhzov Defence Force Operations against Khaliniz Brigade targets are imminent. The government has ordered a general civilian evacuation of key areas. All civilians residing in urban areas controlled by Khaliniz Brigades are advised to leave the operational areas.

Humanitarian corridors have been established to designated refuge points in the HirHishudra Mountains.

This is not a drill; civilians are advised to take immediate action to evacuate by 02:00 at the latest.

Khaliniz Held Transmecuria, 02:05

The Lakhzov jets raced through the night skies over Transmecuria, their roar echoing off of the hills and booming through the valleys. So far two squadrons had been sent on sorties comprising of five LAB-III Medium bombers, ten Barak II multi-role fighters and an escort of 5 LAF-II Fighters each. As they entered in to range of their targets they split off for their final attack runs, releasing their guided munitions which struck lighting the night with orange fire. These runs would continue until all primary target sites had been confirmed hit, a task that would take them through in to the morning.

As the bombs began to strike their targets manual air sirens began to scream out their warbling tones, and civilians, many of whom had been prevented from evacuating by Khaliniz road blocks attempted to find shelter in basements and stairwells as across the towns, cities and villages of Transmecuria buildings were blown to rubble. Forty five minutes after the first attacks had begun, and taking advantage of a lull in the bombing Utman civilians began to emerge, many carrying whatever essential items they could stuff in to a suitcase and attempted to leave on foot, the urgency of their departure increased by the spreading rumours that the hand of Emet had taken the opportunity presented by the chaos to launch an offensive push into Khaliniz Brigade held territory; true or not nobody wanted to be around to find out.

By 10:00 the next morning thousands of Utman from across Transmecuria were walking in long columns towards the distant Hir HiShudrin Mountains aiming to get to the safety of Somerset.

With confirmation of the Cenneg soldier being killed in the Sarin attack there was no way that a Peacekeeping mission could continue in the same vein as it had, there was a series of high command meetings and then it was agreed.

The Spotter aircraft from the Royal East Moreland Air Force had spent days gathering information over the Utmen territory high above the terrain. It's system continuely sucking in and analysing information of audio, visual and electronic information. It made it easy to select the targets that they needed and the air crews were provided with relevent data sat at Illumic Command. The three Dragonheart aircraft were being loaded with drop tanks and their RAPTOR pod, a system developed by EMAC and SmartWar allowing the aircraft to map any target in 3D in real time. Joining them were three Cenneg pilots in Claithon multi-role aircraft, each of those carrying four Brimstone missiles, each with programmable warheads. They listened as the Morelander officers outlined the operation and then handed them their packets of information.

The flight over the Illumic for the aircraft was pretty routine until they reached the coast, there three air to air refuelling aircraft waited to top up their tanks before they commenced their run into Lakhzovia. They flew through Somerset airspace before dropping to the deck as they reached the theatre. The Morelander aircraft lead the way weaving their way through the mountain passes at just over Mach 1, the RAPTOR pods scanned the terrain and relayed it back to the Cenneg pilots following 60 seconds or so behind. The first target was coming up quick, a fuel depot. The Spotter had tracked radio transmissions from a group manouvering around the region close to the Sarin attack site, they'd traced it to an old industrial estate that the Dragonhearts skirted around their pods aimed at the buildings.

"Piper One has visual on the target" the first Cenneg weapons operator watched the 3D image being produced by the three Morelander aircraft, he could see trucks laden with what looked like barrels driving out. He tapped a few buttons and guided the crosshairs for the missile system onto the building they had marked down on aerial photos. He checked, double checked and then squeezed the button on his joystick. "Piper One, Brimstone One away." the missile streaked off into the early afternoon sky before arching down towards the building.

Just behind the second aircraft had identified the truck as a potential target, "Piper Two, Brimstone One away."

The six aircraft pushed their throttles forward and headed for the next target, the power sub-station they'd found connected to an old warehouse. The electronic comings and goings indicated it was some kind of command post. They repeated the process from earlier firing two missiles into the target to ensure a positive impact. Their task done High Command relayed the details of the sortie to the Lakhzovian government.

Quote from: Encrypted

As of 1315 local time a sortie of six CNN aircraft breached air-space in the no-fly zone over Utmen controlled territory. Those aircraft engaged two targets, the first a suspected Utmen fuel depot and the other a suspected command post. It is believed that these two targets were destroyed. In order to minimise the impact on civils lives targets were selected using our 3D mapping pods after electronic surveillance. We shall continue to hit Utmen targets of oppurtunity in response to the Sarin attack. With Cenneg POW's being murdered by the gas and civilians being targetted the use of chemical weapons has crossed a Red line the CNN is unwilling to not respond to.

Quote from: Public Statement

Several hours ago members of the Ui Cenneslaig peacekeeping team in Lahkzovia were murdered using Sarin gas, something outlawed under the Uppsala Convention. The use of chemical weapons on POW's and civilians is something which can not be tolerated. As such we believe that Article 3.1 of the CNN Charter has been breached, this article states "Member nations agree that an unprovoked attack on one is an attack on all." As Ui Cenneslaig were acting as peacekeepers under an internationally agreed deal we believe attacks using chemical weapons on our personnel is unprovoked. Our East Moreland allies agreed and as such we have begun strategic air strikes against Utmen targets aimed at stopping any future attacks of this kind. We shall continue this action until we are convinced the Utmen no longer present a threat as a coherent war machine. We shall in due course be seeking a full CNN resolution on this matter.

King Finley of Ui Cenneslaig.

Tamsdin

Two Finch's sat in the centre of the village with the third in the sky above, three Achkaerin Special Forces Troops were on site these were Vermillion Troop, Cerulean Troop and Crimson Troop. The CO of Vermillion Troop was Major Sapyiat Kaltev, she stood one hand on hip her other hand on her assault rifle, their job was to verify the Sarin attack on the village, if so then all hell was likely to break loose. Still it was hard for Sapyiat to even stand there, she had memories from her childhood she hadn't even been ten years old when she'd witnessed things that no one should ever have to see, that sort of thing stayed with you. She'd seen similar sickening scenes in Safraen and then Seaforth during the Eugenics War and now here she was again, she crouched down taking a drink of water from her canteen, her Earagon necklace's pendant dangled out from around her neck.
"You ok?" someone asked, Sapyiat looked up and saw her best friend Captain Akiza Taylor, the CO of Cerulean Troop stood there.
"How many?" Sapyiat asked
"One hundred and twenty men, women and children." Akiza said "According to Lass some have post mortem gunshot wounds, so some of the bastards were a little merciful."
"There's nothing merciful about this." Sapyiat said, standing her eyes blazed with the fire of fury "And there never will be." she looked across the village to where Crimson Troop led by Captain Lass Ford were loading a group of dead bodies onto one of the Finch's that would leave one hundred and ten bodies to deal with
"I'd say it looks like Sarin but we need tests to confirm." Lass said
"Send the Finch back with the bodies, we won't we far behind but first things first." Sapyiat said
"I agree." Akiza said

While Crimson Troop had been loading bodies, the other two troops had been taking it in turns to dig a grave and stand guard, now that it was done the troops stood around the grave.
"What does it say?" Sapyiat asked looking at a flat piece of wood Sapyiat had been carving into with her knife
"Here lie 110 innocent victims of terrorism may they know peace." Akiza said she placed the piece of wood on top of the grave the words facing up, there would be time for proper memorials another day when there wasn't a war raging on.
"Anyone saying anything?" Lass asked
"No one deserves a death as horrible as what they experienced, may whatever God's they believe in grant them that which they deserve, may they rest in peace." Sapyiat said "Let's get out of here."

It was around four hours later that Sarah interrupted Kakashi and Kama in the command tent
"It's confirmed." Sarah said "Of the ten bodies we brought back from Tamsdin all tested positive for Sarin traces."
"Burial?" Kakashi asked
"Seen to." Sarah said
"Ok so we have a game changer." Kakashi said "Khaliniz Brigades have a chemical weapon, potentially manufactured by them from chemicals likely manufactured by Lakhzovia, or Namis forbid something more unthinkable. Lakhzovia manage to take advantage of a lack of committed aircraft to hit with air strikes and Ui Cenneslaig are hunting the Brigades. This is no longer a Peacekeeping Operation, this just became a Humanitarian and counter insurgency operation." he picked up a marker pen and drew a line on the map on the table "Lieutenant Asa is the declaration of a Cordon Sanitaire like this within the boundaries of our ROE's?"
"Our overriding responsibility is to the preservation of civilian life." Kama said "I believe we can."
"Ok effective immediately we sacrifice the pass assault, we position troops and aircraft into positions and patterns around the pass's to spot and divert fleeing civilians into the cordon area, put camps on Somerset soil, we'll need at least one camp for militia who have surrendered, one for fleeing refugee's and one specifically medical." Kakashi said
"CS principles?" Sarah asked
"If there's one thing I learned from fighting Su Mai Nekhaga it's that you don't fight an enemy this crazy unless you can fight with everything you've got." Kakashi said "First rule of war is pick your battlefield. The last thing we need is anymore civilian deaths so we declare the cordon and get the civilians to safety, if Hand of Emet and the Khaliniz Brigades are going to slug it out then let's clear the field of play, establish a hard perimeter, we search refugee's as they enter the cordon make sure there are no surprises, warrior's pride should play to our advantage and no refugee goes within the inner perimeter around the south entrance to the eastern pass until that place is clear and open for business. We'll also need an additional camp for militia that surrender."
"Anything else?" Sarah asked
"Use of Sarin is use of a chemical weapon and in violation of the Uppsalla Convention, the Khaliniz Brigade are going to have to pay for that. Tell Wing Commander Jennings she needs to coordinate with Ui Cenneslaig and East Moreland on air strikes against targets. Ask Intel to dig up what they can and get me a structure of the hierarchy of the Brigades."  Kakashi said
"Yes sir." Sarah said
"Sarah I want to see Major Mishima and I want to talk to Melissa Lusk and the Secretary General of JET and I want to talk to Kadassa, he needs to be aware of this." Kakashi said "Oh and see if you can me on the line with the senior officer whether it be Morelander or Cenneg at Kinere Airport."

OOC-  Just a FYI, the expansion of Somerset on the map can have no impact on this RP unless Lakhzovia says otherwise. My understanding at the beginning was that mountain passes are the only means of crossing the border and these were destroyed by the Khalinz Brigade early on. As such unless Lakh agrees that the passes have been cleared , which I think in combat is going to take some doing, the Somerset-Lakhzovia border remains closed.
