Markus:
A time of despair March 2000

More and more Elanians are forced to extreme measures in order to survive
"The Elanian government has announced today that it will no longer be able to pay its debts to its creditors effectively announcing that the country is bankrupt. The President has said he will prioritize the paying of pensions and wages, non-essential government services will be showdown until the situation will improve.
Trade unions have already announced they will take to the streets. We remind our viewers that this is the third year with inflation of more than 300 percent which has decimated the living the standard of Elanians. Poverty is at an all-time high.
The President has also announced that he will ask for foreign aid from the international community. One senator has said that “Elania is on its knees. It is now forced to beg for aid to other countries.”

Markus:
A change of directionApril 2000

The leader of the National United Front
"For the first time since the liberation fo the country from communist rule, the Christian democratic Party has lost the elections. The National United Front (NUF) is the winner with 60% of the votes. The party has promised to eradicate corruption, reduce unemployment, nationalize key industries and restore national pride.  We can only hope they will succeed. "

Markus:
A new constitution

February 2004

"Today Elanians vote in in the first referendum since the country has broken the shackles of communism. The government seeks to change the constitution in order to be able to tackle corruption and govern more efficiently. Among the proposed changes are the abolishment of the position of prime minister with all the powers being given to the President which will be elected via popular vote, the President will also be allowed to initiate legislation as well as veto any legislation approved by the senate.
The President has said that “I have restored prosperity in the country with the limited powers I have under the constitution, imagine what I could do if I have a constitution that allows me to do more.”
According to exit polls, the referendum will pass with at least 60% of the voters voting for the proposed changes.  That is despite criticism from the opposition that the changes could lead to an erosion of democracy in the country."

Markus:
Massive protests
June 2009

"The government has said it will reconsider their controversial bills which mandates healthcare cuts for those with serious incurable medical conditions. Spontaneous protests have erupted all over the country over the bill. Initially, leaders of the National United Front, the ruling party, have defended the bill saying the money spent on treatment for those with serious incurable conditions could be better spend towards science and education. However, the Christian Democratic Party together with leader or the Orthodox church have strongly condemned the bill. "

Markus:
A new citizenship tier

The President has called the citizenship tier a new era for ElaniaNovember 2014

"The government has approved a new citizenship tier which seeks to “reward those that do more for the country”. The ten level citizenship tier will give those at the higher tiera access to better accommodation, more opportunities for travel, better access to healthcare and many other benefits. The lowest citizenship level will see a provided modest basic income as well as access to basic healthcare and public transportation. All citizens regardless of citizenship tier will have access to the mandatory public education system. The President has pushed hard for the reforms saying that"
“We need to reward those that do more for the Motherland. Elania has come a long way under the leadership of the National United Front. We have left behind many of the superstitions about gods and other fantasies. We have moved towards a society that values science, education, hard work and patriotism. The new citizenship tier is the culmination of this long project. It accepts a fundamental fact that we are not all equal and that not all contribute equally to the greater good. Those who do not wish to contribute or cannot will be able to enjoy a decent living. Those that contribute more will be rewarded for their contribution and their patriotism. However, all children under the age of 18 will have access to the same public education no matter who their parents are. Elania is a land of opportunity so we will make sure that our youth have all the necessary requirements to succeed in life.”

The government has emphasized that the system allows for social mobility with citizens being allowed to move up or down the ladder upon the yearly review of their performance and contributions to Elanian society. "
