« on: March 02, 2018, 08:20:52 PM »

Motto:- Forward, Upward, Onward Together
National Anthem:- Minstrel Boy

BACKGROUND

The Paracambian Civilisation began on the islands in the North of the Sea of Alucard in the 2nd Century BC after a group of explorers set up a trading post on one of them in order to restock their ships with fresh food and water. Soon the island was discovered to contain many items of value itself and a colony was established there. During the 2nd Century AD the Paracambians landed in Northern Albion and established an outpost there that became their native home. Over the next 500 years or so their people thrived by a combination of maritime trading and making good use of the rich farmland. The first problems however came in around the 11th Century when the islands and the mainland began clashing over the rightful monarch. This saw nearly 150 years of war as control swung backwards and forwards between various factions. In the 12th Century it was decieded that the Soloman family would maintain dominion over the mainland and the various islands would be split among lesser royals, a practice that brings about todays situation where the Emperor controls the whole Imperial Commonwealth with Prince's and Princesses controlling various islands held in fealty to the Emperor.

GOVERNMENT STRUCTURE

PRINCIPALITIES

The Commonwealth is split into six Principalities, each of which has their own ruling Prince or Princess. Every five years a Principality must hold elections to elect two Representatives to the national government. A Principality is governed by its own constitution and may establish laws based on the following areas,  law enforcement, public education, public health, regulating intrastate commerce, and local transportation and infrastructure. The Principality is granted a budget from central government each year to run these areas but may also impose their own taxation to raise further revenue.

CENTRAL GOVERNMENT

The Central Government is based on the mainland at Alumampton. It is made up of 12 representatives and one appointed by the monarch who acts as Prime Minister. The Prime Minister may only vote if there is a tied vote, however they may take part in debates and introduce legislation. Any of the 12 elected representatives may also introduce legislation. They may suggest legislation on any issue not governed by the Principalities.

THE MONARCH

The Monarch acts as the overseer of the government and holds the position of Commander in Chief and has sole responsibility for foreign diplomacy. This is however often delegated to other officials on a case by case basis. No law can be passed until the monarch signs it into law. They have six months to do so before it automatically passes. Should they not agree with the law they can veto it which means amendments must be made before it can be presented again. A monarch may only use four veto's a year.

THE MONARCHY

EMPEROR BENSON II

Emperor Benson II was born 6th September 1972 on the island of Alemba while his mother, Empress Ramona was visiting her grand-parents. As such despite that island having its own Prince today the Emperor still feels a kinship with it. His father, Emperor Samuel IV didn't see him until he was two days old.

Almost immediately he moved to the mainland and was brought up on the Imperial Families Aluhampton estate. There he was privately tutored alongside his older sister, Princess Eleanor and then later his younger brother Prince Christian. The young Prince Benson was a keen sportsman and represented the island of his birth in Cricket and wrestling. At the age of 18 he enrolled at Aluhampton University where he studied Law and Economics graduating in 1993.

After University he spent four years in the Navy, a tradition for the royal family that every member do some for of military or civic service. He spent most of his short naval career working on patrol ships with a short three month tour in a submarine. Upon leaving the Navy in 1997 he began taking on royal duties alongside his father.

In 2012 his father died after a long battle with illness during which Benson had assumed all the duties of his father. Benson choose to be crowned not in Aluhampton Palace but rather on the island of Alemba something which at the time caused a bit of controversy.

Since becoming Emperor Bensen has focused much of his efforts on promoting shift in the nations economy from an agricultural one to a mainly tourist and service based industry one. This however has not always been popular as many see it as exploiting the islands for the benefit of the mainland.

In 1998 he married a member of the Alemba royal family, Princess Madeline, who he meet at a charitable event held by her family. The two had a mutual love of cricket and were spotted at many matches throughout the Empire. The couple have two children, Prince Marcus (b.1999) and Princess Sophia (b.2002).

EMPERESS MADELINE

Madeline is both the Empress and also a Princess of Alemba. She was born 27 August 1972 and grew up in a regular school on the island. She was considered a talented maths student but otherwise an average student. In 1988 she won the National Maths Challenge and won a place at the National Institute of Science and Technology where she studied Applied Mathematics. While at University she became interested in computing and set up a small company with a classmate.

After graduation in 1993 she spent her time building up Zenith Data Systems, a company making data processing systems for businesses. She sold her share in the company when marrying the Emperor earning her an estimated $160million. She meet Emperor Benson at a charity cricket match in 1996 and the pair married two years later. The couple have two children, Prince Marcus (b.1999) and Princess Sophia (b.2002). Since becoming Empress she has established the Soloman Family Fund which helps fund young entrepreneurs aged under 20.

THE PRINCIPALITIES OF THE EMPIRE

ALUA - "Home of The Empire"

A Mainland province famed for being the cultural capital of the Empire producing a string of musical innovations, great artists and writers.  The capital of the Principality is Rosenberg which features a ultra modern city centre while the suburbs are much older. It also has the nations largest industrial dock.

AMALIE - "The Fruitbasket of the Empire"

A mainland province that at one time was covered with forest, today it has been turned into a commercial hub for agriculture, particularly fruit production for export. Its beaches have also become popular with tourists.  The capital of the principality is Sheridon

ALEMBA - "The Gem of the Alucard"

A small island renowned for its great beauty and slowly becoming a holidaymakers dream. The capital of the island is Basseton

The National Anthem of the Empire is known as the Minstrel Boy. It tells a story of a Paracambian soldier who in the 18th Century fought to free slaves from Royal Seleucid transport ships feeling it his moral duty.  Being a travelling musician before joining the Marines he had packed with him his musical instrument when he set sail on the raids. His ship was captured and knowing their fate would likely be taken as slaves themselves the crew scuttled the ships and charged the Seleucids, all dying in the attempt. The wreckage of the boat was found a week later and the inscribed harp recovered.

LYRICS

The minstrel boy to the war is gone,
 In the ranks of death you'll find him;
His father's sword he has girded on,
 And his wild harp slung behind him;
"Land of Song!" said the warrior bard,
"Though all the world betrays thee,
One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard,
One faithful harp shall praise thee!"

The Minstrel fell! But the foeman's chain
 Could not bring that proud soul under;
The harp he loved ne'er spoke again,
 For he tore its chords asunder;
And said "No chains shall sully thee,
Thou soul of love and bravery!
Thy songs were made for the pure and free
They shall never sound in slavery!"

The Minstrel Boy will return we pray
When we hear the news we all will cheer it,
The minstrel boy will return one day,
Torn perhaps in body, not in spirit.
Then may he play on his harp in peace,
In a world such as heaven intended,
For all the bitterness of man must cease,
And ev'ry battle must be ended.

RELIGION IN PARACAMBI
VODOU

Beliefs
Often misrepresented as Voodoo and its fictional form of evil black magic and blood sacrifices, the truth is a lot less dramatic. Around 60% of all Paracambians follow the Vodou faith.

Vodouisants believe in a Supreme God called Bondye. Since Bondye  is considered unreachable, Vodouisants aim their prayers to lesser entities, the spirits known as loa each of whom is associated with certain duties or areas of daily life.. The most notable loa include Papa Legba , Erzulie Freda , Simbi , Kouzin Zaka , and The Marasa, divine twins considered to be the first children of Bondye. These loa can be divided into 21 nations, which include the Petro, Rada, Congo, and Nago, each nation is associated with a specific sphere of life , for instance the Ogou family are soldiers, the Ezili govern the feminine spheres of life, the Azaka govern agriculture, the Ghede govern the sphere of death and fertility.

Coolness overall is valued, and so is the ability and inclination to protect oneself and one's own if necessary. Love and support within the family of the Vodou society seem to be the most important considerations. Generosity in giving to the community and to the poor is also an important value. One's blessings come through the community, and one should be willing to give back. As such a person being solitary is looked down upon and the community come together to ensure no one is alone, this sees many families inviting single neighbours for dinners, visiting old widowed people and other such practices of community support. This sense of community also means there is no single religious leader such as a Pope in Catholicms, instead communities select their own spiritual leader who may or may not be given a specific title. Being part of a group is seen as important and so many religious groups have sprung up including secret societies.

According to Vodou, the soul consists of two aspects, in a type of soul dualism: the gros bon ange (big good angel) and the ti bon ange (little good angel). The gros bon ange is the part of the soul that is essentially responsible for the basic biological functions, such as the flow of blood through the body and breathing. On the other hand, the ti bon ange is the source of personality, character and willpower. "As the gros bon ange provides each person with the power to act, it is the ti bon ange that molds the individual sentiment within each act .While the latter is an essential element for the survival of one's individual identity, it is not necessary to keep the body functioning properly in biological terms, and therefore a person can continue to exist without their physical body.

RASTAFARI

Beliefs

Emphasis is placed on the idea that personal experience and intuitive understanding should be used to determine the truth or validity of a particular belief or practice. No Rasta, therefore, has the authority to declare what beliefs and practices are orthodox and which are heterodox
Rastafari belief is deeply influenced by Judeo-Christian religion. It accords the Bible a central place in its belief system, regarding it as a holy book, and adopts a literalist interpretation of its contents. Rastas regard the Bible as an authentic account of early black history and their place as God's favoured people. They believe that the Bible was originally written on stone in the language of Amharic. For Rastas, the Bible is therefore viewed as the key to understanding the past and the present and for predicting the future. It is also regarded as a source book from which they can form their religious practices. The Bible's final chapter, the Book of Revelation, is widely regarded as the most important part for Rastas, having a particular significance for their situation.

However, Rastas also believe that the true meaning of the Bible has been warped, both through mistranslation into other languages and by deliberate manipulation by those who wanted to deny them their history.[They also regard it as cryptographic, meaning that it has many hidden meanings. They believe that its true teachings can be revealed through intuition and meditation with the "book within". As a result of what they regard as the corruption of the Bible, Rastas also turn to other sources that they believe shed light on black history.

Rastafari are monotheists, worshiping a singular God whom they call Jah. Rastas view Jah in the form of the Holy Trinity – Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. As well as regarding Jah as a deity, Rastas also believe that Jah is inherent within each human individual. This belief is reflected in the aphorism, often cited by Rastas, that "God is man and man is God". ] As a result, Rastas speak of "knowing" Jah, rather than simply "believing" in him. In seeking to narrow the distance between humanity and divinity, Rastafari embraces mysticism.

Jesus of Nazareth is an important figure in Rastafari. However, practitioners reject the traditional depiction of Jesus present in Christianity, particularly the depiction of him as a white, believing that this is a perversion of the truth. They believe that Jesus was black and that he was a Rasta. Christianity is treated with suspicion out of the view that the oppressors and the oppressed cannot share the same God, with many Rastas taking the view that the God worshipped by most white Christians is actually the Devil. Rastas therefore often view Christian preachers as deceivers, and regard Christianity as being guilty of furthering the oppression of the black diaspora, often referring to it as having perpetrated "mental enslavement". One recurring saying among Rastafari is that "The Pope is Satan". Jesus is given particular prominence among a Rastafari denomination known as the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Rastas belonging to this group refer to Jesus as Yahshua and Yesus Kritos, and believe that his second coming is forthcoming.

TEKUISM

The Native religion of Paracambi is Tekuism. The first recorded mention of the faith is from 800 BC, it was then adopted by the first settlers of Paracambi as they arrived. It believes that there is one God, known as Teku and that he has embodied many people with aspects of his power throughout existence.

Teku was the god of creation and the hunt , he one responsible for restoring the world each day. He carries a bow made of two great snakes, which appear in the sky as the rainbow for the people below, and each day carries out the task of renewing the heavens. As the sun sets he begins to capture the stars and gather their light together, assembling them so that they may be sent to the sun to restore it once again and give it the strength it needs to rise the next day.

Teku was also responsible for the creation of the humans as well and the animals which they hunt. It is the belief of the faithful that he gathered together clay, much like he does with the stars each night, and used it to craft the various peoples of the world. To create black people he used black clay and to create white people he used white clay.  In these clay figures a soul, called the megbe, was introduced to the clay figures and gave them life while bonding them to the rest of the world.

However, several aspects of Teku are sometimes attributed to others who have lived among us at times. These people are known as the "Beloved" and are believed to have been when Teku sends part of his own soul to Mundus in order to live among us, either for a divine purpose, to guide humanity or simply for his own amusement

PARACAMBIAN CULTURE

The nation of Paracambia was founded by slaves who either escaped their masters and somehow made their way there or those freed from mainly Seleucid slave ships. As such Paracambian culture while largely being influenced by the original settlers has also taken onboard many influences from cultures across Mundus where the slaves came from.

MUSIC

With the nations main religions both placing an emphasis on dance music has become a central part of Paracambian culture. The steel drums are extremely popular as is reggae which is thought to have originated from within the islands of the Empire. The music style emphasis dance and so are therefore rather joyous even if a sad subject. Almost everywhere you go you will find music being played and every community tends to have a choir and steel band. The bands perform regularly at festivals and carnivals and there are many great competitions between the various groups.

NATIONAL HERO 1 - THE MINSTREL BOY

Paracambi is a nation that is rightfully proud of its navies history. Throughout the period of time when the Seleucid Empire tried to sell slaves across Mundus the Paracambians made it their duty to track down Seleucid slave ships and attempt to free those onboard, regardless of where in the world they had originally come from. As a result the Navy often clashed with the Seleucid in almost every ocean of Mundus and as a result certain ships and certain individuals became legends, chief among them is a young man who later symbolised the nations determination to stand for freedom.

Little is actually known about The Minstrel Boy except that in 1743 on the Island of Alemba a 16 year old inn musician named Thomas was wooed by the tales of legendary naval captain Jebadiah Braithwaite and joined the Navy. For a few weeks Braithwaite and his crew toured the various provinces of the Empire recruiting replacements for the HIMS Insolent, a ship that already had a reputation for leading the charge in freeing slaves. Eventually the ship ended up in Aluhampton where the crew spent several weeks refitting the ship ready for its next deployment. As usual the crew of the ship had been billeted in the cities fort and upon leaving the city marched through the streets to the dockyards lead by Thomas and his harp singing various songs. Little did the people of Paracambi know this would be the final time the young man would set foot on his homeland's soil.

The HIMS Insolent set off for the Kyne and spent several months raiding Seleucid shipping lanes and freeing various slaves whom they would off load to other Paracambian ships before returning to the fray. In 1744 we have confirmed reports of the ship docking in several ports including Gaia, Edwinstowe and even Portworth as they chased Seleucid ships across Mundus. Letters sent by Braithwaite while in some of these ports tells us about the life on the ship and while we never get confirmation of Thomas' surname we do get regular mention of "Thomas the Minstrel" who would according to his captain "while away many an off-duty writing shanties, ditties and ballards praising our victories and mourning our lost brothers." In 1745 several sheets of music were left by Braithwaite in Claith and a local dairist of the city speaks of witnessing a "Musical duel between a young Paracambian and his harp and a broad Celt on bagpipes." The story goes on that the "Young bern and old man parted as brothers in music." We also have from this stay the mention of Thomas being praised for his bravery for helping carry wounded sailors from boarding parties back to safety from the enemy vessel.

In 1745 we get the final mention of Thomas The Minstrel in Braithwaite's reports. This time from a letter sent from Walesby in Bakkermaya. It tells the tale of how the HIMS Insolent emerged from fog to find itself faced with a pair of Seleucid ships. The Insolent and the Seleucid exchanged fire for around an hour as the Insolent sought to escape. Realising escape was impossible Braithwaite realised the ship would eventually be caught so determined the Insolent would board the first ship which had strayed too far ahead of its partner. As the two ships got close Marines and deckhands from the Insolent crossed onto the Seleucid ship and with his harp as usual strapped to his back Thomas went with the boarding party. The Paracambians realised slaves were being kept below deck and so four of them, including Thomas made their way below to try and free them. It was during this that the second ship arrived and collided with the Insolent and its sister ship which was badly damaged. Braithwaite realising both Seleucid ships were now damaged because of poor seamanship thought he may be able to slip away so sounded a recall and cut the lines linking the ships together. He was recorded by several other officers as waiting "until the very last moment before taking his own sword and cutting the lines knowing in his heart he had failed to rescue a single slave and likely consigned some of his men to a life in chains." Braithwaite himself took up the story.

"Through teary eyes our vessels began to drift away, some ten men were on deck begging us to come back, some launching themselves into the sea trying to swim to us, we pulled three men from the sea that way. Suddenly we saw a commotion on deck and the men who had gone below returned to see that we had abandoned them. We could hear the Seleucid commander order them to lay down their arms and their lives would be spared. Suddenly a harp flew from the deck into the ocean and a brave shout of "Insolent always" was heard. We watched as men tried to hold back the Seleucid as Thomas the Minstrel disappeared below deck. Moments later we shielded our eyes as the Seleucid vessel exploded into matchwood. It was clear Thomas, Richard, Peter and Henry had decieded that the songs we sang alongside that harp would never sound in slavery. We prayed that the spirit of these men would return to guide our nation and our righteous mission. Here is to the Minstre Boy torn perhaps in body, not in spirit."

The Insolent managed to slip away and limped to Alemba, fittingly where the Minstrel Boy's story began. Braithwaite attempted to find the boys mother however was unable, likely she had died in the plague of 1744. Braithwaite and the crew spent the winter there repairing the ship and as news of Thomas' heroic death spread more and more men came forward to join. In the spring of 1746 the Insolent took back to the seas with a new figurehead, gone was the mermaid replaced with a harp. For the next five years the Insolent raided Seleucid ships and a newly recruited youngster called Richard Bowyer took up the mantel of the ships Minstrel. He began writing songs inspired by the ships adventures and this included a song in honour of Thomas. The song soon began to spread along with Thomas' story and began to be something sang across the Empire until it eventually reached the ears of the Emperor of the time who was familiar with the tale already. He insisted the song be sung at all royal and military functions and that became the National Anthem. Braithwaite meanwhile was offered command of the whole Navy but refused as it would mean leaving the Insolent.

In 1747 while  resupplying in Walesby a local came to the ship and having heard of the story of Thomas the Minstrel presented the crew with a heavily damaged harp which bore the ships name and an inscription, "To My Boy Thomas", the harp was that thrown away to prevent the Seleucid taking his pride and joy just before his death. The harp was brought back to Aluhampton where it remains to this day on display in the Royal Museum.

In 1751 the HIMS Insolent carried out its final raids and having experienced a huge amount of damage raiding Seleucid ships in the Kyne limped home to Castries. A Royal Shipwright declared the vessel unsalvagable and the battered old vessel was decommissioned. Braithwaite was now aging and despite wanting to remain in command was granted an estate in Alemba. Instead of fully enjoying his twilight years Braithwaite established a small Naval Academy and commissioned two boats of his own, The Minstrel and The Harp. He helped train a large number of future naval leaders and in 1754 he was made Duke of The Insolent.

Upon his death in 1762 Braithwaite wrote the following to his Emperor, "My Emperor. I have dedicated my life to freeing those in chains and when my arm lacked the strength to do so I tried to prepare others to do what I could no longer do. I will go before the Loa and tell them how many are free because of the Insolent, how many have their families because of our work and I know they shall be proud. I know though that as I speak to Papa Legba behind him will be the four, Thomas the Minstrel, Richard, Peter and Henry. While I know it is Legba who shall judge my soul it is the judgement of these four brave souls I am concerned of. I pray they find in their heart the compassion to forgive me for leaving them in the enemies hands. That moment of poor judgement is the blight on my career, my biggest shame and regret. I have done what I can to ensure their memory and sacrifice is never forgotten. I ask you, my beloved Emperor, to ensure that the story is never allowed to fade." In his will Braithwaite left considerable funds to provide pensions for his crew, educate their children and build a memorial to his HIMS Insolent.

Braithwaite was given a heroes funeral with his body buried at the Academy he had built in Alemba. The old mast head of the harp was taken from its place in the Academy and displayed in Aluhampton. At this point the city was beginning to expand and the old wall was seemingly becoming pointless in terms of defence as the city had spread outside of it. The then Emperor was Jovian II who had on top of the gate that the crew of the Insolent had marched through a new guardroom constructed and the gate was renamed the Minstrel's Gate. Above the gate now stands a bright yellow clocktower with a panel bearing an incription welcoming people to the city. It reads "Here is Aluhampton. Tread lightly for on these streets the spirit of The Minstrel Boy shall forever be." around the panel are the names "Thomas, Richard, Peter and Henry"

The last request of Braithwaite is still recognised today in many ways. HIMS Insolent is still a ship in the Paracambian Navy with the nations Naval Officer Training Centre being located at Braithwaite's Academy in Alemba and two training ships operating there called HIMS Minstrel and HIMS Harp. Additionally whoever commands the Insolent upon retirement is granted the title Duke of The Insolent, a title they surrender when the next commander retires. The ship also carries a unique rank that of Lead Harpist which is given to some individual onboard who is skilled in music.

The Minstrel Gate

The story of the Minstrel Boy is very clear to see in Paracambian popular culture. Along with the memorials and military rememberance of the boy the nations National Anthem is an ode to the story. In the modern period a large number of films and TV shows have told the story the most recent being The Warrior Bard which was released in 2019. The nations sports teams wear a harp as their emblem and male teams use the nickname "The Minstrel Boys" while the women's teams use "The Minstrels".

Controversially in 2016 in the Commonwealth of the Iwi a grave was found on a former Seleucid plantation that read simply "Thomas Insolent" and seemed to date from the 18th Century. This lead many to believe that Thomas did not die in the manner described by Braithwaite and was infact captured and spent the rest of his life as a slave. A case was made that Braithwaite embellished the story of Thomas in order to create a national hero and inspire the nation. This point of view however finds next to no supporters in Paracambi.
