Diplomacy and Events / Re: Afolyan Invitation (Zimalia and Kermah)
« on: February 16, 2024, 12:24:52 AM »
"You're more than welcome to visit us as often as you like, as for a tour I'm happy to accompany you however I'm not the person to give you the detail you may be looking for but perhaps we can look at that after we finish the business we have in store." They passed through the gatehouse and the King handed the wax tablet to a man there, "The tablet stays in the gatehouse and upon your departure you have two options. The first is you may take it with you, a nice souvenior of your visit but back in ancient times it acted as proof you were in the city if for example you were paid to deliver messages, part of a trade caravan or the like. The second traditionally was that it was destroyed however today when not everyone signs one we display them in museums as a kind of guestbook of visitors to the city." They entered the city through the gatehouse where the large solid wooden doors were tied back with a red rope. Each night at sunset the doors were symbolically closed to keep out evil spirits. As they walked further away from the gates the buildings modernised until after a few hundred meters they were entering a low modern building. It was the cities museum and was just five years old. It was a project King Tshepo was very proud of. He had arranged for a room overlooking the main hall showing a reproduction of the gatehouse to be the venue for their talks. "If I may begin, you started asking about a memorial that you can fund. I think the memorial is a fantastic idea and will fully support its construction now while you're going to be funding it I will of course have the city councillor approve its final design. While it commemorates your people's tribe and I want that to be important it is also something the people of of  Dlamini will have to live with on a day by day basis. I'm sure though that we can find some kind of design both parties can be happy with. Now as for finding family members that would be going back several generations beyond both our births. How do you propose this takes place?"

Tshepo had not expected to have to be the face of the Confederation in terms of meeting with foreign guests. While the meeting was not on a level of national significance he was still a little nervous. His role as King of the Kinjanja region of the Confederacy had seen him spend most days dealing with trying to ensure prudent management of their resources and make use of their financial foundation. He had informed Consul of the Confederation, Dr. Adebola Kamau, of the visit and while taking a keen interest he was happy for Tshepo to do whatever he thought was best describing it as "an inter-tribal arrangement" which did slightly annoy the King, he was not a tribal chief but a King. The city of Dlamini was buzzing about the visit too. While the Afolyans had long merged into Kinjanja society there were a whole host of organisations that sought to keep the Afolayan heritage alive if even it was supporting local museums. It was Tepu, a leader of the Afolayan Cultural Trust (ACT), that was perhaps most excited. The 60 year old had traced his family history back to one of those slaves who had been freed, he believed by the Paracambian Navy, and brought to Kermah before settling on a farm just outside Dlamini.

As Yengwayo arrived at the cities old ceremonial gatehouse, where the laws of  King Tibati the Judge still were etched upon the walls, a series of chants from a group of the Kinjanja Youth Corps began to welcome the guest. As Yengwayo exited his car the King stepped forward and held a wax tablet towards the Zimalian. "Sir it is wonderful to greet you" The King said before explaining the tablet, "In days of old since King Tibati the Judge's time it was tradition that any non-Kinjanjan entered the city would sign the wax tablet confirming that they would abide by the rules etched on these walls. I would therefore like to invite you into our peoples capital" He extend the wax tablet towards the guest for him to make his mark with a stylus attached. The words on it merely saying, "I accept the invitation of King Tshepo to walk the streets of Dlamini"

Kagiso looked through the sights of his hunting rifle. There were two of the rhinos ahead and through his scope he could one had the much larger horn. That would be his chosen target, if he was lucky he might get the chance to shoot the second one but that would depend on what direction the beast hurried. He took a final breath and squeezed the trigger. He saw a red puff through the scope and was confident he'd hit his mark. He switched his rifle to the left, found the second rhino running away having presented its profile willingly to Kagiso. He quickly pulled the trigger again and saw a second puff of red mist this time though the beast didn't instantly fall and so he took a second. Even before he had packed the rifle away his colleagues had already begun stage two of the process. The truck driven by Gatsha had Msizi already firing up the chainsaw. Moments later Msizi had hacked off the first rhino's horn and was already half way through the second by the time Kagiso walked over. Leaving the rhino carcass for the scavengers the trio headed off as quickly as their pick up would let them over the bumpy Kermahan terrain.

As they approached the town of Pongola on the west coast of Kermah a warehouse was expecting them. The gate opened and they were waved inside. "You're early boys" a man in a suit said cheerfully. "I like people who are beyond punctual. What do you have for me."

Gatsha pulled a tarpulin that covered the flat bed of their pick up to unveil a virtual butchers slab of animals and parts. "All fresh, all from the last 48 hours." He lifted up an elephant tusk proudly. "We've eight tusks, some elephant skin, two rhino horns, rhino skin, several Gazelle heads and we trapped around twenty snakes." Already various warehouse workers were pulling the contents off the back, weighing or counting them and then placing them in special boxes marked up as machine parts. As the last of the snakes was dumped into a box and sealed up with tape and then cling film a man wearing a polo shirt and dark shorts handed the suited man a note.

"Well Gatsha your little haul is netting you $1000. He reached into his left inside pocket and brought out a bundle of bank notes and began counting them out into the palm of a very pleased looking Gatsha's hand. The suited man was Lindokuhle Nolwazi, on the surface a businessman who specialised in exporting machine parts, his "clean" business brought old technology from nations like Abertone or Paracambi, broke them down into parts ranging from copper wiring to engine parts and then shipped them off around the world to anywhere wanting them. It was a perfect front for his other, more profitable business in selling rare animals as pets or the much more lucrative market of animal parts for medicine in Lijiang. This latest batch was now ready to be shipped off and while he had paid Gatsha a good wage for a Kermahan he himself would likely net some $100,000 for their haul, one of the rhino horns alone would sell in Lijiang for around $130,000 per kilogram and by just the weight of his hand he judged the smallest was around 3kg. All that was left to do now was to container up the shipment, make sure the bribes had been paid and wait for the ship to Lijiang to depart.

Diplomacy and Events / Re: The final coronation of Empress Zuri
« on: January 08, 2023, 12:27:26 AM »
King Tebogo Opeyemi of the Mombaka tribe was also the head of the Gorotoland state that made up part of the Confederation. Until just a few days ago Zuri had been one of his subjects and it was at the tribes Uhmlang Festival that the Emperor had meet his new wife. While the King was obviously going to come, he considered Benson a friend, he had also brought his youngest wife Añuli who was keen to experience a foreign land, this was her first visit abroad having missed out on the families trip to East Moreland. While the King was responsible for 1/3 of the Confederation it was the Consul, Dr. Adebola Kamau, who would represent the whole of the Confederation. Northern Albion was just a hop, skip and jump from Castries and the trio didn't take that long to arrive compared perhaps to the Morelanders. The trio were looking forward to the event and Tebogo was pleased to see King David, he waited for him to greet the Crown-Prince then stepped in, "Crown-Prince Marcus, your father told me a great deal about you." He smiled shaking his hand before introducing first his wife then the Consul.

Adebola was a large man with thick glasses and he gave a swift bow, "Your Highness thank you for the invitation. I look forward to the festivities." He stepped back and turned to King David. "Your Majesties, may I thank you for the agreement you made with King Tebogo, its a great benefit of our nation. I do hope your Honeybadgers are thriving, I know their Kermah cousins would send their greetings." He chuckled.

KING TEBOGO CONGRATULATES "FRIEND" EMPEROR BENSON ON MARRIAGE

King Tebogo Opeyemi of the Mombaka tribe has today sent his congratulations to Emperor Benson of Paracambi on his recent surprise marriage. The Emperor was visiting some of the small Vodou community that exists in the East of the Gorotoland region which lies in the jurisdiction of King Tebogo. His visit coincided with the annual Uhmlang Festival taking place. During this festival all unmarried women between the age of 18 and 40 are expected to join a ceremonial parade. Historically this parade would see the King pick women to serve in his household. Up until 1961 the parade was also used to organise women into five reserve military units for use during emergency and each regiment would provide one woman to be part of the Kings personal household. Meanwhile any Prince's within the Royal family may select one girl in total to serve in their household. Traditionally the women would serve as part of the Kings bodyguard for a year and at the end of their service be placed in what would be considered an extremely good marriage, especially considering many of the girls selected came from low status families. In the past many of those girls being selected have also become mistresses and even wives to members of the royal family. Currently King Tebogo has five wives with Queen Ssanyu having been selected to serve during the ceremony in 1990. Historically the festival has also seen "Honoured Guests" granted the right to make a selection, as happened this year. One of the most surprising selections took place in 1790 when King Sven of East Moreland was invited to pick, local stories say he made an excuse not to pick a girl as he was already married and his Gods forbid him, he did however ask that if the King of the Mombaka wished to give him a gift it should be a pair of Honeybadger. The King ended up taking 16 of the animals back to East Moreland and soon it became the national animal. This year Emperor Benson selected to have 22 year old Zuri Kolisi join his household for a year.

During the ceremony King Tebogo said, "Emperor Benson may be a foreign royal but he is my friend and a friend to all in Kermah. I have seen him come and spend time in our lands and he has treated all of us with deep respect and friendship. It would therefore be wrong for such a noble man to be here during the ceremony and me not give him a chance to partake. I am confident that any girl selected will serve in his household with great enthusiasm and dignity." On the day the Emperor spoke to several of the senior ladies in charge of the ceremonial regiments and selected Zuri Kolisi who was part of the Central Mombaka Regiment. The Emperor initially informed the media that he was "amazed at her beauty and hearing she was a gifted university student impressed with her intelligence." She was studying Agricultural Sciences at the National Industrial University where she was due to take her final exams in the summer of 2023. 48 hours later however it was announced that she had married the Emperor after her father had agreed what has been described as a "hefty bride price." It is understood that Selwa Kolisi, the girls father, will receive 100 head of cattle, three tractors and ten years supply of seeds from the Emperor. When King Tebogo married Queen Ssanyu he paid 50 cattle and two years of seeds. The ceremony was a traditional Vodou festival as it appeared the now Empress Zuri had converted to the faith of which the Emperor is the leader of.

Speaking as his daughter has now returned to what will be her new homeland her father said, "It is beyond my imagination that my daughter will have a life beyond what I could ever have given her. She will now escape some of the hardships that a life as a farmer here in Kermah involves and in doing so has ensured the rest of her family are taken care of. I can not be happier." While Zuri has yet to be formally coronated as Empress people of her tribe are excited that it will happen soon. As King Tebogo explained. "The ceremony may by some foreign eyes seem outdated, we have seen an incredible love story take place and as a result a young girl has risen far beyond what she could have achieved without the ceremony." The King selected four girls who are all members of the National Sporting College and explained "having spoken with the elder women who run the various ceremonial regiments we hope to create some sporting greats from within the tribe. The four ladies will be part of my household and as such be given support for the next 12 months to achieve not just their sporting dreams but help fulfil those of our tribe."

KERMAH-ABERTONE TO DISCUSS SLAVERY ISSUE

Every year a suspected 20,000 people from Kermah illegally cross the straits between the two countries in the expectation of a better life. Many of the tribes from Kermah have connections within the Eastern part of the Empire of Abertone dating back several hundred years and some are lured across in the belief that these tribal connections will be a path to a better life. This however is not always the case. As no freedom of movement exists between the nations of Kermah and Abertone these trips are illegal and gangs of human trafficers take vast sums to provide people with what they believe will be safe passage. When they arrive in Abertone however the gang often take any official paperwork and whisk the new arrivals away to work on farms, in warehouses or illegal brothels. In fear of family members back in Kermah being killed or reprecussions of being caught themselves the victims feel they have no choice but to comply. It is estimated there are around some 200,000 "slaves" in Abertone.

Last year around 12,000 people were returned to Kermah where despite their fears they face little to no government action as King Tshepo of Kinjanja, the province where most of the returnees came from explains, "I don't begrudge anyone seeking to find a better life. I'm just disappointed that people feel it can't be here. Its a dangerous journey either across the Straits or the longer land route. I want anyone trying to make it to consider not doing so and look at official routes rather than feathering the beds of the smugglers. We will happily work with Abertone to try and resolve this issue and ensure people aren't forced into shady jobs against their will." These sentiments were echoed by the leader of the Confederation, Consul Dr. Adebola Kamau, "What drives people to make this crossing and consign themselves to a life of hardship is beyond my understanding. As a leader of a Confederation I will work with the parties that make up our lands to see what we can do to help those abroad to return home and at the same time we must look at how we can make Kermah a better prospect."

Many experts point at the huge economic differences between the two nations. Abertone enjoys a GDP per capita of $31,600 while the richest of the Confderation provinces is Balaika with a GDP per capita of around $22,000, however Kinjanja  sits at just over $ 7,500. Dr. Kamau explained the impact of such a gap, "For someone in the vast majority of Kermah the idea of a nation with more than double their wealth is a tempting carrot to be dangled. Our best chances are to close that gap. We must look at Balaika as a role model for much of the Confederation as they are both the  most successful part in terms of GDP per capita and also have the largest economic growth with an estimate of around 2.4% expected this year." The main driver of the economic growth there seems to have been the service economy and tourism which may be harder to replicate across the Confederation.

Dr. Kamau though has said that he and the three leaders of the Confederations sub-part will meet with the Emperor of Abertone shortly to discuss ways of stopping this human trafficking. Yesterday two small fishing vessels packed with people were intercepted by the Confederation Navy and returned to shore. Police interviewed a total of 47 people but made no arrests. Chief of Police said "Usually the smugglers load the boats and then point them towards Abertone  before the organisers sloping off. We generally get sadly disappointed people returning home. We hope that they don't try again but often we see the same people two or three times."

Tebogo rather enjoyed the idea of old folk tales even if this one to his mind made little sense. It was an interesting place to visit. There was also something rather theraputic about watching a skilled craftsman be about his business. "Since the 1800's the Kingdom the Mombaka Tribe has had a rather mixed history. We found natural problems such as water shortages, famines, even locust brought us down at times but by the 1870's we'd found ways to peacefully live with other tribes and then through twists and turns that would make a HBO screenwriter confused Prince Chinasa of Balakia ensured the Confederation came into existence. Since then it has been a balancing act of presevering our heritage and culture while at the same time trying to enjoy the fruits of working with our neighbours. I am not the King of a land in the same sense you are. I hold lands in  Gotoroland but I am more a King of a people. The Mombaka tribe is a tribe that still relies of farming and forestry but we do well. You may have even heard of our stick fighting, I'd be intrigued to see if the skills from that transfer into the skills needed for swordsmanship." He glanced over to where the blacksmith was busying himself. "I hope though that your people may be able to help us in that regard. You see it is my hope that we can begin moving beyond agriculture and so we would like to discuss ways that our nations can somehow begin to work together. The Consul has given me authority to negotiate a interim arrangement between us. Would this be something we can achieve while I am here?"

CONFEDERATION ADOPTS "ABRAHAMIC DECLARATION"

Consul Dr. Adebola Kamau has today approved the Confederation becoming the first non "Abrahamic" nation to sign the Abrahamic Declaration of Rights recently authored in Rayyu. The document outlines both the rights and responsibilities of a citizen and will be used as a bench-mark for the whole Confederation. The document passed approval of all three parts of the Confederation and then Senate. Signing the document Dr. Kamau explained, "It may sound out that a nation that does not have a majority of people following the Torah, Bible or Quran would sign this. We share many unfaltered traditional views with these faiths and as a diverse nation this has often been difficult to ensure we have a rights document that refelects the diversity of the Confederation. With 40% of our population worshiping one of the Abrahamic Faiths it is then not as surprising that the document is acceptable to the nation as many of us who follow folk-faiths have many beliefs that are similar to those of Christianity. It could be said that in some ways we share the destination not the mode of travel."

King Babajide X of Balakai was the first of the three leaders from the Confederates states to support the document. "We are an ancient people, our culture dates back to 3000BC in some ways. We have a desire to try and keep as much of that alive as possible while giving people a chance to live prosperous lives. This document is going to ensure no matter where you are in the Confederation your rights will be protected as a minimum level." The next to sign wasKatikkiro Tebogo Opeyemi of Gorotoland. "I am a supporter of this document as it can give us a foundation. At the moment a person travelling our Confederation has to have a good knowledge of many different rules to guide them. While those elements of independence can still retain this shall now ensure a minimum standard is adhered to." Finally King Tshepo signed just a day before the Consul saying, "I was torn as to whether to sign this but having consulted with the Kinjanja Priesthood they assured me that to do so would be a good thing and so here I am to place my signature on it."

The Consul's signature did however come with one clause and that was that the document will become part of the Confederations Law in 1st July 2022.

A young Priest, hardly into his twenties by the look of him was placing copies of the paper order onto the seats. He turned when Martin Deed approached and with a beaming smile handed him a copy. "The service is what some would consider Kermah Catholic." He chuckled, "We naturally follow the directions of our father the Pope in the Ecclesiastical State but with our own styles. I have heard many of the hymns sung in the Churches in the ES are rather slow and while the words are beautiful they do not inflame the hearts of souls like ours. So the hymns may not be in the style you are accustomed. Once past that expect a traditional mass. The Archbishop giving a sermon today to welcome everyone. Its an exciting day." The young priest continued to place the papers while chatting. "So how does the Basillica compare the churches of your homeland?"

With praise from the Patriarch Alexy the Archbiship Emeka blushed slightly. " I like to think the flock is just open hearted enough to accept the word. Me and the clergy are just happy that so many souls now stand a chance of reaching salvation and that is the most important thing. I am slightly ashamed to say this but I think the Catholic church here may appeal for reasons other than just the word of God. The people of Kermah are sadly not yet the most educated of people, I am thankful that the Pope and others have supported the faith in providing education, as such we have almost a captive audience. As we provide more and more school places it is likely we are laying a foundation for years to come. In my life time we will not see the majority of our land be Christian, but we've some promising young men coming through the ranks who will finish the task. Who knows, a future Pope among them." He smiled. "For now though I'll settle for making this a home." he gestured to the Basillica. "Perhaps I can take you to the garden where I am meeting some of your Rus friends later.

It was in the garden that they meet the Patriach Tikhon, "I assume gentleman you know each other." the Archbishop waited for them to acknowledge each other and then was shocked by the gift from Tikhon. "I am ashamed to say that at present you would be hard pushed to find 4,000 poor Kermah children of the faith that can read, but we are working on that, this will be a big help. Thank you." "I wish to discuss with you two gentleman many things as we have received a great deal of moral and of course financial support from the Rus nations. I do not wish though Kermah to become a charity case always relying on the world when we have needs. I believe we have a great deal to offer the world and would appreciate either of you suggesting ways that my people can help you"

Father Abraham Okache watched the boy walk over, in a land where everyone was black the Rus boy stood out a mile. "Young man the beauty of a baptism is something to share far and wide and for my part you can film me all day. Just make sure to get my good side." he turned his face as though allowing Vitali Jnr to get his good side. "The decision though should be with those being baptised, after all it is about their relationship with God and today is their special day." The next up was a young girl who said she didn't mind and so waded out to be baptised. While Vitali filmed Abraham set about his work totally focused on the young girl who today was taking a new name. The ceremony finished Abraham hugged her. "Sarah I am so happy you have joined our Church family." he helped her to shore where several of her friends were waiting and welcomed her into the faith themselves. "317" he said to Vitali, "Do you think there is a world record for baptisms on a single day?" He asked as he motioned for the next person to come down into the river.

Moisey Viktorov found Dr.Kamau enjoying an iced tea near the garden. "Please my name is Adebola, my friends call me Ade and I hope you will to. You're neither a patient nor a citizen so we should drop formalities." He offered Nadiya a glass before Moisey, " I am from part of the Confederation called Balakia, the majority of people there are probably best described as followers of the Folk Faiths. Each village, tribe, clan whatever you wish to call them can have their own variations so please don't take what I say as evidence of us all. We believe that the first humans were born directly from the soil and returned there, the rest of us are flesh born and that are soil born ancestors work to ensure our survival and so we give thanks to them. It is as far removed from your Christianity as one can imagine, but we are taught to respect all creation and that means other faiths. I can't imagine our faith spreading much beyond Kermah though as the tales tie so tightly to the land here, every mountain, stream or rock can have some association. I am though puzzled by your nation, no elected leader, it must be difficult to make progress at times?"

50 days should have been plenty for the green shoots of change to begin to be seen.

The only people I've seen actually take a move towards building and maintaining positive activity in this place are Dave, Nova, Markus and whoever --- is on Discord.

By now we could have worked out what we're doing with the nobility and I'd have hoped to have seen work done to actively try and change. I get the impression the hope was this would blow up, things wouldn't change and people would drop it or they'd leave and that would solve the problem.

"I would prefer for my family to see Portworth if possible. Perhaps once our business is concluded we could visit Keepton." King Tebogo concluded. "He wasn't entirely sure standing around in the snow sounded fun but he knew several of his wives had never even seen snow so perhaps if the purpose of the visit was to widen their world experiences it might be a good thing. "The number one reason we have come is for this." he waved for Prince Itoro to come forward. He was holding a lengthy leather scabbard and inside it a blade. "With your permission?" he asked the King of East Moreland and waited for approval before removing the blade with a rather scrapping sound. The blade had a few nicks on the blade and a spot of rust here and there. "I am ashamed to say that perhaps my ancestors didn't care for the blade as well as perhaps you have the Ratel." He hoped the state of the blade wasn't an offence to the Morelanders. "This gift is one that has in some ways been neglected like the foundations of friendship we could have had if our ancestors had followed through with that visit. It is my hope you can find a way to restore the blade to its former glory, and I understand that you're an able swordsman, perhaps a few instructions on how it should be used for me and my son. Then maybe we can talk business? as for the ladies is there any way they can experience some Morelander culture, perhaps with your wife if possible but before that I think they should all see this.....Forge of the Gods did you say?"

OOC- People are still free to turn up

Isiobodo hadn't welcomed a foreign group within the memory of anyone living there. It was the capital of the Confederation, the home of its Senate and HQ's of various businesses and the like. It was the component parts of the Confederation that often were more developed but that would need to change. He was not a Christian himself but Dr. Adebola Kamau, the Consul of the Confederation had felt it his duty to be present, he was after all the representative of nearly 45million people united under one flag regardless of origin or religion. Today members of his nation would be celebrating and he felt it only right that he show respect to that celebration. He had arrived at the capitals airport along with  Emeka Abiodun, the capitals Archbishop and the Confederations most significant Catholic Priest.

"Good morning Ade" the Archbishop greeted his Consul rather informally. The two might be of different faiths but both enjoyed watching the football and found themselves at  Isiobodo Capitals matches often enough that they had become friends.

"Good morning Emeka" the Consul embraced the man. "You've got a good day for it." the Consul gestured to the cloudless sky in which just the coolest of breezes hung. It was a day that a man could get away without sweater or jacket and wouldn't be sweltering like so many days in Kermah could be. "Is everything prepared? Do you need anything from me?"

"A quick baptism could be done" Emeka joked as they watched a coach pull up and in bright colours of every part of the rainbow people emerged and were ushered into a set up tier of seating close to the gate that the dignitaries would exit. Already some private jets had been lined up along the usually quiet airports standing areas where wealthier Kermahites had flown in for the occasion. 25% of the nation professed some form of Christianity and Emeka had heard of days long bus journeys having been undertaken to get the faithful here. As each aircraft of the visitors touched down a similar routine took place. Dr.Abiodun welcomed them to Kermah and made some small talk about their homeland before wishing them a happy visit and offering his services if they required anything. He then politely handed them over to the Archbishop.

Emeka was, in contrast to the Consul, a small man with a shiny bald head and a permanent beaming smile. Rather than offering a hand he embraced each of those attending in a brotherly hug. "I am so grateful you have come to see us today" he told each of them. "The Lord has certainly sent us a day to remember." He took them over to the seating area where the assembled mixture of brightly dressed men, women and children cheered and waved excitedly at each guest before striking up in song. There would be three or four minutes of some gospel hymn and then the ever recognisable Baba Yetu. The Archbishop beamed even brighter the first time each of the guests heard it and took great pride in explaining. "While we have our official national anthem, and then our tribal one I am very very proud that this is song almost daily and with such passion by 1/4 of our population." Emeka believed pride was a sin but he honestly believed the joyous nature of his people's music mixed with their love of the Lord produced a sound even God would find incredible. When it seemed no one was looking he even found himself clapping and singing along with it.

Once everyone was gathered a large coach arrived and they were invited to climb aboard. "The ride to the new Basillica is not far but as you'll see it may be a little tricky" As the bus pulled out through the airport gate a long straight road led into the capital itself and a phalanx of police outriders on white motorbikes took up position. As they began to enter the outskirts of the city floods of people dressed in reds, blacks, yellows, greens where heading in one direction and several sirens from the motorcycles were needed to create a passage. "We have estimated that around two million people have made the trip to the city." The Archbishop said with pride, "The Consul here had to hastily find large screens for the parks and every cinema will be showing a feed of the day." As the crowds parted some were seen with drums and horns and songs filled the air as different groups began singing and then would without a word settle on one song and join in together. A river flowed down one side of the Basilica and a bridge had to be crossed to gain access to the Basillica and its gardens which were in full bloom. A large metallic fence that would have not looked out of place at a music festival surrounded the complex and soldiers in dress uniform manned entrances where tickets were being checked. As the coach crossed the bridge a large group could be seen at a waters edge apparently carrying out baptisms. "That is Father Abraham Okache, a raising star in our Church family." The Archbishop explained. "He's only been a fully fledged Priest two years now and has quiet a following, he's done a great deal of work spreading our message and today he hopes to baptise 500 people."

Once over the river the coach stopped and allowed everyone to exit. "Please fell free to explore. We've some time before the official part of the day begins." The Archbishop was last off and waved the coach driver goodbye as he joined the group again. The Consul had come with them and made his way into the garden. The Church had little interest for him except for it being a beautiful building. Several young Priests were busying themselves placing orders of service on chairs that had been set out on some of the lawns for those not lucky enough to have a seat inside to still be able to take part.

To Whom It May Concern

For a long time the Christian faithful of the Confederation of Kermah have lacked a grand central home. In 2018 we broke ground on the Basilica of St. Arcadeius and now as its construction is completed it is now the largest Church in the Confederation. Capable of housing 18,000 worshippers inside and several more thousand in the grounds outside we are excited to begin praising God under its roof. We are thankful to all those who have contributed to the construction of the Church and extend a special thanks to our friends in Zaporozh who have supported the construction of our gardens.

We would like to invite those wishing to join in our celebration to Isiobodo to join our joyous day.

Blessings of Christ
Archbishop of Isiobodo, Emeka Abiodun

SENATE BLOCKS STICK FIGHTING BAN

Today the controversial attempt by Sera Motebang from Balaika to put blocks and controls on the traditional stick fighting has been defeated 4 -11. The vote largely was split along regional borders with all 4 votes in favour of controlling the sport coming from representatives from Balaika. Just Joma Elawa from Balaika voted against the controls saying, "It is my opinion that matters such as this should be left to the governments of each state rather than a Confederation wide stance, after all only a very small proportion of the Confederation even take part in the sport." The members having the votes for Gotoroland and Kinjanja refused to add controls over the sport and instead voted against it.

The move was meet with celebrations by the Naguni Tribe who had gathered outside the Senate to protest against the proposed law change. They thanked Consul Dr. Kamau for his recent visit to their tribal lands and for speaking in the Senate to say of the importance that the sport had in Naguni culture. While Consul does not have a vote except in ties he is permitted to speak in Senate meetings and is responsible for presenting the vast majority of legislation to the Senate. The Consul did however urge the tribe to consider ways in which they could make the sport safer saying, "Until the participants are adults I think they should use forms of padding or shielding, the sport puts a lot of stress and strain on a person and it is important that we protect young bodies from harm." The tribes leader,  King Hortuba, said "The sport will live on and grow. It is part of our cultural identity and I am grateful the Senate saw sense." As soon as the result was read out to the public the tribe held an impromptu fight outside the Senate which Police had to break up.

Tebogo Opeyemi had a variety of roles. He was the King of the Mombaka Tribe, a member of the Conferderations government and also the Katikkiro (considered Prime Minister) of Gorotoland. In addition to that he was a man who considered family the central point of life. With him it was his actions in his political posts that made life better for his family and he had a large family. As the private plane they'd hired landed and stopped at the appointed spot Tebogo looked out the window and turned to his assembled entourage with a beaming smile. "We may outnumber the Morelanders." They all shared his chuckle.

Tebogo had five wives, three of whom had accompanied him, his first wive was Queen Fatsani and she had stayed in the tribal heartland to keep an eye on the goings on of the family land. That meant the 2nd wife, Queen Nnenna, was the most senior of the two so linked arms with her husband as they exited the aircraft to the familiar sound of their own national anthem. Behind them were wives number four and five, Taurai and Añuli. The two junior wives happily linked arms with each other as they followed in the footsteps of their King. The King had 14 children and six of those had come with him, his heir Prince Itoro lead the way and at the back was 16 year old Princess Hadiza. The large gathering of the family approached King David, his wife and the Chief Councillor. "King David I am King Tebogo. I'm excited to see your nation and must congratulate your band on our national anthem."

North coast of modern day Kermah, 1790

Young Otieno had run the few kilometers from the coast back to the Chief's holding. "Chief Mombassa" he yelled as he hurried towards the enclosure for the cattle where the Chief liked to start his day.

"Calm boy" the Chief addressed the 12 year old. "Whats got you excited?"

"I was in the market with my father buying cloth for the Uhmlang Festival when a big boat arrived. White men got off and one of the men at the port said it was a Chief from a land far off, I think he called it East Moreland." The name didn't ring many bells with Chief Mombassa but that wasn't a surprise as the tribe got very few visitors from beyond the lands the tribe neared. It was though a good oppurtunity to gain prestige and influence above the other tribes, maybe even better weapons. They'd heard rumours of the Kinjanja King's buying canon from Paracambi and so one day those guns may come their way. The Chief called for one of his faster warriors to head to the coast and invite the foreign Chief to the festival.

TWO DAYS LATER

The Uhmlang was a great occasion for the tribe. It was one of the few times that the whole tribe gathered and women busied themselves in the fields around the Chief's home territory sorting themselves out for the festival. Women would be assigned their regiment for war time and five lucky women would be selected to serve the Chief for the year. It was a role of great honour, if the girls was fortunate enough to end up in bed with the Chief and conceive she became his wife and was a Queen, if she didn't end up pregnant the rich men of the tribe would be desperate to get her to be their own wife. Either way it was a way for the poor families to find themselves shooting up the social ladder of the tribe. The foreign Chief, or as it had turned out a King, had arrived the day before and had spent time with his white followers exploring the area. He had become fascinated with the strange Ratel menace that raided the tribes honey bee hives but he had seemed a pleasant enough man. Mombassa had enjoyed trying out the swords of steel the men had brought, it was a vast difference to the spears his own men used and he felt he'd learned something useful. Mombassa made the decision that after picking his own women he would allow his new friend a selection too. Who knew maybe in the years to come a Mombaka women could become Queen of this strange land.

The parade came and it was clear this King Sven was a little uncomfortable with the semi nakedness. As the different tribes walked past girls jostled and pushed to get to the front of the group so that they may catch the Chief's eye. Every now and again one of his sons was sent down to get the name of a girl that had appealed to the Chief.  Once the last of the several thousand women had danced by the Chief he stood and yelled across the assembled throng and called out five names. As each girl was called there were cheers from the ring of men who encircled the whole spectacle, no doubt her family. She then marched out of her Regiment, a little shield in one hand and a knife in the other. As she reached the Chief she exchanged her shield for one made from white cowhide, only the Chief was permitted to have white shields for his soldiers. She was now in his service until the next festival. A woman with a round belly sat behind the Chief, one of the girls picked from last year who was now a Queen. Sven meanwhile was a little awkward but he had a need to ensure his boat to cross the Kyne was well stocked and with the Chief's tribe controlling this region it didn't do to get on his bad side.

The Chief stood and spoke to his people, a man knelt next to King Sven translating for him, he was a member of the tribe who had visited Paracambi and from there Bakkermaya and knew some of this strange man's language. "Today we are honoured to have a mighty chief from East Moreland with us, the Chief has many spears, or swords, back home and is a man we now call friend." Sven nodded thankfully at the kind introduction. "I therefore believe he should be permitted to pick himself a lady for service in his own Regiments." Sven looked even more nervous after the words were translated and needed to find a way out of it. He made it look as though he was looking at the women while he thought and then he spoke via the translator. The Chief listened carefully, his face going from angry, confused and then laughter. The Chief stood and while still laughing addressed his people. " Our guest says that our women are so beautiful he can not make his mind up, in his lands a powerful man can only have one wife ." The crowd laughed at the thought, "He is married and has a son so can not take a woman from our tribe even if he could make a decision. He has said if we wish to give him a gift he would like a Ratel." Again there was laughter, the tribe hated the little beasts. "I have told him for as much as I care he can take them all. I therefore have a contest. The Regiment to capture the most Ratel by nightfall will be my personal guard for the year." The women before them rushed off and throughout the rest of the day there was whooping and calling around the village. At nightfall crates were piled and a total of 8 Honeybagders, six female and two male had somehow been captured. A further three had been killed but several women sported bandages from their attempts. As Sven inspected the crates one of the male ones seemed to be particularly feisty.

Sven turned to the Chief and smiled and withdrew a sword from one of his men's belts. "In my homeland the symbol of owning a sword is one that shows a man is worthy of respect and is a man of honour. On behalf of our nation I'd like you to have this." He handed the blade over "Now this animal" he tapped the crate, "What should we call him as I think he's the boss."

"Well in our tongue we would call him Stoffel, it means the Fierce One." The Chief was still admiring his sword. The festival continued with much feasting and in the morning the two men embraced as friends and the Honeybadgers and the King made their first steps towards home. That was the first and last time that the two had meet, until now.

To His Majesty King David of East Moreland

Over two centuries ago the King of East Moreland, almost by accident wandered into the Uhmland Festival. During that day our people for a brief time became friends and gave gifts to each other. You became the home of the Ratel, that you know by the name the Honeybadger and in return my tribe were presented with a sword. There had been hope from our ancestors that this could have become the start of a friendship with people beyond the ocean but sadly for reasons beyond either of our control that never happened. Now as we reach my third decade in charge of Gotorland I think I have taken our people as far as possible without having us make links beyond the seas. While our nation is well connected to Paracambi I think our old link to your ancestor, and your own interest in History, is something that could give us a foundation from which to begin again a friendship. I would therefore be honoured if I could come and visit the ancestors of that first Honeybadger, whom I believe today is hosting the Winter Games, and to have the sword given to my own ancestor given some care and attention. I look forward to your response.

King Tebogo Opeyemi of the Mombaka Tribe
Katikkiro of Gotoroland

"STICK WAR" CONTINUES DESPITE CONSULS VISIT

Members of the Naguni Tribe have still continued their protests over the proposal to put limits on their traditional stick fighting. The move comes after a debate in the Senate which saw the tribal chief address the chamber and give a passionate defence of the practice. The general feeling gauged by those watching the debate however was that should the matter be put to a vote limits or controls will be imposed on the practice. The large gathering of the tribes-people outside the Senate saw Police struggle to hold the crowds back. Police ended up having to use tear gas to ensure that the perimeter of the Senate building was not breeched. There were a total of five arrests made and one Police officer required medical treatment after being hit by a milk bottle that had been thrown.

In the afternoon the Consul, Dr. Kamau visited Naguni territory and spoke with a council made up of young members. He was put under close security by members of the armed forces and during his visit he called for protests to remain peaceful. "We live in a Conferderation where there is a system for having your voice heard. We are listening to the people but it takes time. In that time people need to remain within the law. They will be heard, that is why I am here today." There is expected to be a vote in the Senate in a few weeks time following a committee hearing evidence from medical professionals.

1874-Aluhampton

The meeting between Emperor Jomel and  Prince Chinasa Nyakeya who was the first Consul of the Kermah Confederation had gone well and the two stood on the deck of the HIMS Insolent, the third ship of its name. In front of the mast a table had been set up with a table on it. A group of selected nobles from both countries stood watching as the two men each signed their name to the Aluhamton Treaty.

Quote from: The Aluhampton Treaty

The Kermah Confederation and the Empire of Paracambi, having meet in the spirit of friendship have agreed to the following arrangements between the two lands.

1. The two nations shall ensure a diplomat of noble rank shall be assigned to the capital of the other nation.

2. The two nations shall work together to combat the evil of slavery.

3. The nations shall do nothing to harm the trade of the other.

4. The nations shall seek to promote trade between themselves by allowing ships to dock at their ports with priority.

5. Neither nation shall undertake action to disrupt the follow of the water in Lake Dagamella.

6. The nations shall allow cross border travel so long as those crossing the border have registered their intention a week before doing so. Anyone crossing the border may stay for 60 days.

7. Any person arrested shall visiting the other shall be returned to the nation of their origin once found guilty. Their home nation must punish them in accordance with the law.

8. Ships bearing the flag of either nation shall be afforded the protection of both nations wherever they happen to be on Mundus.

9. The leaders of the two nations agree to meet every four years in alternating nations.

2022 marked the 37th meeting between the two nations. During those 36 previous meeting the treaty had changed to reflect the changing world but it largely remained one focused on being good neighbours and friends. This year the Confederation would welcome Emperor Benson to their lands and in accordance with what had become tradition in Kermah it was the turn of Kinjanja to host the event. King Tshepo was excited as he'd not had chance to host anything this big since becoming King in 2020. He was keen to show off his nations traditions and as the long standing military heart of the Confederation he had assembled a huge military contingent. The Green jacketed men of the Kinjanja Royal Guard proudly stood at the front of the gathering with their signature yellow and red sashes. The other heads of the states that made up the Confederation waited alongside Tshepo and as their guests arrived permitted the host King to greet the Emperor first. "Emperor Benson" Tshepo wrapped the Emperors hand with both of his own in a warm handshake. "We are delighted that time has come to have you in Kinjanja. Its an honour to meet with you." He made his way towards the other leaders, all of whom had meet Benson before and at the end of the line was the Consul, Dr. Adebola Kamau.

"Emperor Benson on behalf of the people of the Confederation we welcome you once more to Kermah. We hope to once more build upon our friendship and of course support each others continued growth."

NAGUNI RIOT OVER LAW PROPOSAL

Yesterday in the Senate a proposed law was passed that would require any stick fighting contests to be licenced. The proposal by Sera Motebang from Balaika would mean that it would be illegal to organise or participate in stick fighting without a licence, similar to those required by boxing, in addition to gain a licence an individual would have to prove they have been trained in the sport, have knowledge of basic first aid and that a qualified medic is present. Anyone participating who does not fulfil these criteria would face a fine of $1,000 while anyone organising an event failing to comply would be fined up to $10,000 and face up to a year in prison. The law was debated in the Senate however no vote was taken. Consul Dr. Adebola Kamau, a qualified medical doctor, stated that he would await further reports on the situation that took place last week in a Naguni tribal event before permitting a vote. Dr.Kamau explained his choice saying. " We must ask ourself what happens if we pass this law. Would stick fighting end? I doubt it. We would criminalise many people for following their tribes traditions. We must though take steps to protect people as many Naguni will feel pressured to take part in this sport. Boxing has thrived in modern times despite a licencing system. I have asked for reports into the risks of the sport and the likely impact Senator Motebangs proposal will have."

The news sent anger through the Naguni community who tried to march on the Senate building. Several hundred people blockaded the roads around it and began burning tyres. The Senate building itself was being guarded by the Regiment of Kermah who sealed the compounds gates and then prepared smoke grenades and water canons. Having fired warning shots of paint ball bullets the crowd maintained a distance however the anti-riot gear was visible throughout the rest of the day. Basia Makepe of the Independent Party arrived in the early evening and and presented a petition on behalf of his party, who have no seats in the Senate but several in the three State legislations. Mr.Makepe said, "The Senate have no right to impose upon a tribe controls over their traditions. The act of stick fighting is something no one must take part in, it is entirely voulentary. If people go into it with their eyes open to the dangers then Gods help them but it is their choice. We don't stop people playing other dangerous sports like rugby or wrestling. This is an over-reach and must be stopped."

Dr. Kamau has written to the chief of the Naguni and invited him to address the Senate before any vote takes place.

TWO DIE AT STICK FIGHTING FESTIVAL

The annual Naguni tribes Stick Fighting Championships have been held this weekend but have been marked by tragedy. The annual sporting competition see's hundreds of men compete over two days to determine the tribal champion. As rules dictate that no one may fight someone more than 5 years different from them in age the championship sees individuals fight a wide number of opponents to build up a win loss record. These are carefully managed by Marshalls who oversee the event to try and ensure that the most technically skilled fighter is crowned champion. While serious injuries such as broken bones are common the event was shocked when on Friday a 24 year old was rushed to hospital after being struck in the chest. Mbwana Samatta was pronounced dead in hospital several hours later after suffering internal bleeding and a collapsed lung. Even before news of Samatta's fate reached the festival 37 year old Yohana Mkomola was being air-lifted to a nearby Army base having been struck in the face. He too was pronounced dead as a result of extensive head injuries. Families of the pair have been informed and their funerals are expected to take place in the next few days.

The leader of Gotoroland,  Katikkiro Tebogo Opeyemi , sent his condolences to the families saying "Deaths of young men, especially with families, is heartbreaking. It is my hope that spirits of our ancestors will welcome them home as brave men. Stick fighting is a sport that scares me and anyone willing to do it is much braver than me." The Katikkiro did though hint at changes being made to the festival for next year. "Perhaps now is the time to consider making rules to protect those taking up the sport. In the same way that boxers began wearing gloves to mitigate damage, the design of race cars has changed to protect the drivers and various other sports have introduced safety equipment. Perhaps now stick fighting must look at such things. If need be we could legislate for such things but it would be better if the sports organisers took a lead."

Members of the Naguni tribe however spoke out against the steps proposed. King Hortuba of the Naguni tribe was one. He had taken part in the festival and the 55 year old amassed a record of 6 fights, 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. While he was well out of contention his involement was largely a ceremonial one. "As a seasoned competitor at the festivals the measures the Katikkiro proposes are unacceptable. Stick fighting is a tradition that tests a mans bravery. Wearing helmets for example remove that. The deaths are very tragic but I am proud in both men having the stomach to test themselves and show just how brave the men of the Naguni are."

The festival attracted several thousand spectators and brought a boost to the local economy.

ARCHBISHOP OF ISIOBODO THANKS "BROTHERS ACROSS THE OCEANS"

The Archbishop of Isiobodo, Emeka Abiodun, today has confirmed that the new church being built known as the Basilica of St.Arcadius has been given help from Zaporozh. Leading political figure Moisey Viktorov has sent funds, plants and seeds to help complete the garden. Archbishop Emeka spoke about this deed. "Catholic or Orthodox does not matter, what matters is that we love our fellow man and we love God and Jesus Christ. Do we think Arcadius, a most blessed man, would care about the differences between us when we are united as brother in Christ. Moisey and his fellow Zaporozhians have shown they are truly brothers across the oceans. Their generosity to strangers is a true reflection of what we as Christians aspire to and we send him, his family and all those who have supported this cause our humble thanks."

It was confirmed that the designers of the garden have now planned a Zaporozh Corner to be made utilising plants and flowers from Zaporozh. The Archbishop has also extended an invite to Moisey and his family. "When the Basilica opens I hope Moisey will come and bless us with his friendship in person. Perhaps we can sit and enjoy a drink together in their Corner and in the same way those flowers will blossom so will the friendship between two possibly unlikely nations." The Church is due to be completed at the end of February.

RELIGION IN THE CONFEDERATION

The Confederation is a diverse place when it comes to religion. Officially the state has no set religion and no laws exist that give one faith any special treatment. All places of worship must pay tax unless they gain an exemption based on proving that they make a "significant contribution" to their local community. In a broad sense there are five main faith groups within the Confederation.

*Folk Faiths (these are sub-divided between several groups who while names of deities change they share many similarities). They make up around 40% of the population
*Catholic Faith. They make up around 20% of the population
*Vodou Faith. They make up around 10% of the population
*Rastafarian Faith. They make up around 5% of the population
*Aladura Christianity. They make up about 5% of the population.

FOLK FAITHS

The largest of the Kermah Folk Faiths is the Aboway Faith. While there are subtle differences between the various folk faiths the vast majority of them follow a similar pattern of the Aboway Faith there understanding this faith is usually a good way of understanding all folk faiths.

The faithful believe that a series of humans grew directly out of the soil and that these began the human race. Each of these "Soil born" took on the role of custodian of a particular part of nature. The most powerful of these was the Soil Born man Aboway and as such he is the most respected. It is believed that the "Soil Born" began to have their own children and that all "Flesh Born", a term used to describe all humans since the "Soil Born", can trace their lineage back to these original humans. When the "Soil Born" died their physical bodies were returned to the soil from where they came and now act to ensure their descendants on Mundus survive. It is believed that at certain times of the year that the "Soil Born" can communicate with the world of today. Adherents arerequired to participate in frequent rituals within the year and a general communal worship once in a year at a spot it is believed the "Soil Born" came to life, during this large scale communal worship the oracles speak on sensitive issues concerning the community.

The faith have built shrines and temples on spots it is told "Soil Born" did deeds of importance or came forth from the ground. Most of the shrines or temples or single sex with only those of the same gender as the "Soil Born" who the building is dedicated to can enter. The faith permits Priests and Priestesses as each is tied to a particular "Soil Born" Once a year a week long gathering called the Mabatado takes place where all members of the clergy gather to discuss key issues and the faithful may attend to ask for guidance or resolution of moral issues.

At the age of 10 boys are initiated into the faith. They are taken on a ritual hunt and must drink the blood of what they kill before taking the meat to the nearest shrine. Here they are smeared in the blood and spend two days in prayer and meditation, the blood may not be removed until their mother, or female family member ceremonially washes them in front of at least 10 witnesses. At this point it is believed that the "Soil Born" may communicate with them.

Meanwhile girls are considered to be initiated into the faith following their first menstrual cycle. It is customary that once this takes place the girls family take items with the blood on to the shrine where they are ceremonially burnt and the girl is blessed by the Priest/Priestess. At this point it is believed that the girl is now able to communicate with the "Soil Born".

Historically once a young person has gone through a rite of passage they are classed as adults and can marry however since national laws have since superseded the faiths own this is no longer practiced. There are though usually one or two cases a year where rural families have ignored this preferring to believe that faith trumps man made laws.

The faith believe that at death the "Soil Born" gather at a cave that permits travel between the temporal and spiritual worlds. The spirit of the dead person arrives at the cave and is judged whether their soul is worthy to join the "Soil Born". Those who worthy are welcomed into the spiritual world while those who are not are returned to the temporal and reborn into another body to be given another chance to live a life worthy of joining the "Soil Born." It is though believed that when the original "Soil Born" ascended to Mundus a further group attempted to but their souls were not pure enough to survive the journey. These are today thought to live in dark places and should someone live a life so unworthy they are permitted to eat their souls to prevent rebirth. These "Unborn" are considered to be like demons and ghosts.

CATHOLICS

There had been various attempts by Christian missionaries to bring the faith to the lands that today form Kermah. The most successful of these has been the Catholic Church who made real inroads in terms of conversions in the early 1700's. Today around 20% of the nation consider themselves Catholic however while Church attendance is high some still also carry out the rituals associated with their folk faiths.

The faithful are headed the Archbishop of Isiobodo, Emeka Abiodun. The newly constructed Basillica of St.Arcadius was completed in 2022 and is now the home of the Catholic faith in the nation.

The nations patron saint is St. Arcadius who is thought to have been a martyr in the 4th Century. He was killed after hiding from his community during pagan rituals that involved sacrifice as his Christian faith was outlawed. His absence was noted and he was arrested and sentenced to death. Each of his limbs were removed joint by joint until he was just a head and torso. His feast day is January 12th. It is not uncommon to see the "Banner of Arcadius" used by Catholics across the nation.

Banner of Arcadius

VODOU

With the introduction of the Christian faith many began to adapt the new faith with more folk based rituals. This was also reinforced by a huge number of Hougon and Mambo's from Paracambi crossing the border to spread their faith to the region. With the similarities of the two faiths being apparent to many the Vodou faith did relatively well. Today around 10% of the population believe in the faith and are regularly active within their community. The Loa Erzulie (Ezili) is particularly revered as she is thought to be symbolic of a goddess of the word, love, help, goodwill, health, beauty and fortune, as well as goddess of jealousy, vengeance, and discord. As such she is equally feared and respected.

The faithful have no real set hierachy however do recognise Emperor Benson of Paracambi as the High Hougon of the Vodou faith and as such take spiritual guidance from the Paracambian monarch in much the same way a Catholic would the Pope.

RASTAFARIAN FAITH

Around 5% of the population of the Confederation follow the Rastafarian faith. The faith spread to the Confederation in the 1930's from Paracambi. Today the faith has built several large community centres across the nation. The largest contingent of Rastafarians are of the  Bobo Ashanti Mansion. This branch of the faith is considered rather strict compared to most other sects. The Bobo Ashanti are vegan and follow strict dietary rules which includes fasting on the first Sunday of each month. The Bobo Ashanti hold some strict gender roles central to their faith. Men are in charge of life outside of the family home while women are in charge within the household. A woman is also forbidden from cooking for a man during her period as she is at that point considered "Unpure".

ALUDURA CHRISTIANITY

Formed in the 1920's the Aludura Christian Church grew out of the Catholic community feeling that the Papacy was not successful in achieving the conversion to the Christian faith. The Church puts great emphasis on the power of praying and in faith healing. The church opposes traditional Kermah religion, and sometimes burn cult images as idols. They oppose polygamy and witchcraft. In more recent times they have also turned their opposition to Vodou and Rastafarianism.

Priests are expected to regularly minister in areas where the Church is not present and try and gain converts.

CONFEDERATIONS LARGEST CHURCH NEARS COMPLETION

The Basilica of St.Arcadius in Isiobodo today has completed its various stages of construction. The Church dedicated to St. Arcadeius, a Christian martyr who was murdered for refusing to take part in sacrifices, was begun in 2018 and when completed will be the largest Church in the Confederation. The Church though is not yet ready for its official opening as the gardens that are expected to surround it are yet to be landscaped. The Archbishop of Isiobodo, Emeka Abiodun, is due to officially open the Church at the end of February. The funds to build the Church have come from contributions of the Christian faithful and from several businessman. Archbishop Abiodun is though excited by the prospect. "20% of our Confederation are Christians, most of them regular Church goers. The act of building this mighty house for God is a real act of devotion by our faithful. We look across Mundus and see grand cathedrals hundreds of years old, in some cases even close to a thousand. In the grand cathedrals of places like Tytor, the Orthadox nations of the Rodinan Sea region and who can forget the wonders of the Ecclesiastical State the faithful can marvel at the reflected glory of God. Here though we have perhaps been a little neglectful. We can fix that though. The Basilica will be beautiful, its gardens will provide space for larger crowds when the interior is full and we hope we can host major events here that bring our community, not just from Kermah, together."

As he prepared to leave for Paracambi the nations Consul, Dr. Adebola Kamau, spoke about the importance of the construction project. "I'm not a man of the Christian faith but all religions deserve to be honoured and respected. I know the Christian community have worked hard and come together to see this project through and they have set a fine example for all citizens in what is possible if people co-operate. I'm impressed by the building and would love, if the Archbishop permits, to attend the opening as the Confederations Head of Government."

The Consul's words however did draw scrutiny from a leading Priest of the Aboway Faith. Djamba Bakulu is the leader of that faith and said, "There are a multitude of faiths in the Confederacy that do not waste vast sums on buildings. Any faiths talks of helping people, you do not do that with giant buildings. If God is everywhere he doesn't need a building. Build schools not ego trips." The Aboway faith had opposed the building of the Church on that site as they believe that an ancient oracle stood on the site. Despite two years of archaeological study no evidence of this was discovered however this did not stop several legal challenges designed to block the construction.

SUPER LEAGUE ROCKED BY BETTING SCANDAL

A Confederation Super League football referee has today been arrested following an investigation uncovered following what Police have described as "irregular betting patterns". It was noted by several bookmakers that games involving the referee had an abnormally large amount of bets placed on the number of red or yellow cards given during a game. One betting company spokesman said. "Normally we may see around 100 people per game bet on such a thing as how many cards a ref will give during a match. We today have an industry where fans can bet on almost any aspect of a match, even the number of throw ins. With this increased amount of options for customers we keep a careful watch for patterns and have uncovered that in matches involving just one official the bets on cards went from around 100 people to four times the number while other games were not impacted. We naturally alerted the League who have investigated." The League uncovered further evidence and handed their dossier over to the Police who have today made the arrest. The referee has not yet been named as further investigations are still ongoing.

A CSL spokesman told us, "We want a fair competition and while we have individuals willing to manipulate even the smallest element of the game for the favour of those betting large sums, usually from criminal elements, the game is in danger. We have a duty to ensure the game is fair and honest. We thank the Police for stepping in and taking this on."

Some have speculated that the irregular betting could have been attempts by organised crime at laundering money. "A criminal walks into one book-makers and using ill gotten money or fake notes place large bets, sometimes hitting four or five bookies so as not to raise suspicion. They find ways of manipulating the outcome of games so that nothing is left to chance. Once their bet comes in they go to a different branch of the same companies bookies and cash in their winnings, thus getting legitimate bank notes back, even getting some extra as a bonus. As a result it is us who have been left often holding large sums of fake money unaware where it has come from." One business estimated they lost $200,000 last year as a result of this practice. Should the referee be found guilty he could, if tried in Gotoroland, face a flogging for financial deception however with the League HQ being based in the Confederation capital it is likely that will not be the case. This weekends games will be going ahead as expected however it is certain Police will be keeping a keen eye on betting patterns.

PARACAMBI TRIP FOR CONSUL

Consul Dr. Adebola Kamau is expected to depart for Paracambi in the coming days for an official visit designed to promote "Ever closer ties between brothers". Dr.Kamau says that he is keen to build upon the "historic and cultural connections that exist between our two nations. In the time of the 4th Kinjanja Kingdom brave souls from that part of the Confederation tested their manhood by leaving their homeland before returning with a freed slave, meanwhile Paracambi's own naval daring helped free countless slaves. This bond has made us more than simple neighbours and we recognise that annually with a visit between us. Emperor Benson is a gracious host and I look forward to meeting him once again."

This years agenda is likely to be dominated by the Sovereign Union of Nations formation as that body moves towards its 1st birthday. The Consul though has stated, "We do not wish to join SUN and have some concerns what our friends membership means for our own bonds moving forward." Talks are also likely to consider the brewing civil war in Centralia and naval action against the Commonwealth of the Iwi, a nation the Consul says "despite being of a different race, vastly different culture and heritage are people I admire in some ways. They experienced slavery as many of our own people did and threw off their own shackles. My concern is that they now live with that evil inflicted on them as a all consuming desire for justice that sees them, quiet literally, sail close to becoming what they oppose, a nation unwilling to abide by what we accept as necessary for good international order. Therein too lies the problem, how can peace exist with no justice? Had such concepts as international organisations have existed in the 14th Century it would be my hope ourselves and Paracambi would have pushed for all slave traders to stand trial for crimes against humanity. The Iwi's scar is more recent and they do have a chance for justice. Turning nations against them though is not going to support their cause."

While invited to attend official functions in the Confederation during the Emperor's previous visit in early 2021 it is unlikely the heads of each of the Confederate States will attend the visit however King Tshepo has confirmed that he has asked the Consul to extend a challenge to the Paracambians for a sporting festival to take place in the summer.

KERMAH FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION

Football is a national obsession in the Confederation and this is visible in the sheer number of competitions that are run. The Kermah Football Association oversees all of these and was founded in 1908. Broadly speaking the KFA runs two types of competition. The bread and butter of the KFA is the Confederation Pyramid, a structure of leagues that go from the Confederacy wide Confederation Super League (CSL) to district teams within towns. The more heated part of the sport however is the Kermah Shield, an annual tournament modelled on a world cup but played between teams representing Kinjanja, Balakai and the various tribes that make up Gotoroland. The Pyramid games tend to run from August to April and players performances generally determine if they then are selected for their "Nation" in the Kermah Shield which runs from April to early June.

The Confederation Super League was established in 2007 when it was determined that the nations footballing structure needed to adapt to attract more investment, develop competition and help support the national teams development. The League is made up of 18 teams who play each other home and away. The winners of games get three points with one awarded for a draw. If teams are level on points their position is determined first by how many goals they have scored, then goal difference before finally the aggregate score between the teams over the season.

PRISON REPORT CONDEMS STATE OF THE NATION

Six months ago the Depeartment of Justice began an indepth report into the state of the nations prisons and today the results were released. The lengthy report was heavily critical of the nations prison system. The report highlights several key areas where reform needs to take place however the major concern was overcrowding. While investigating Rembara Prison it was discovered that the average cell was designed for eight inmates however on inspection the average cell had 38 people in the vast majority having to sleep on floors. Not only was this scene of major overcrowding an embarassement for the Confederation government it was also discovered that during the night those floors were visited by cockroaches and rats. Several inspections of cells found rat droppings and in the last six months a total of five inmates in that prison have developed Weil's disease which was probably caught from coming into contact with rats urine. In the kitchens of the prison more examples of poor maintainence were discovered as it was clear that slugs have managed to infiltrate the food prepartion area and lines of salt on the floor were being utilised to try and keep the infestation out. In a survey of inmates it was reported that 82% of inmates had witnessed someone carrying or using a weapon within the prison while 89% said it was easy to get contraband within the prison. The Report was presented to the Senate today as its author, Julius Umbosa called for the government to invest more in prisons.

Mr.Umbosa's plee though was roundly rejected by members of the Independent Party one of whose members stated, "Prison is not a holiday destination. Prison should be the worst experience a human can go through and if you come out in one piece you should have no desire to return. There are people living in poverty in the Confederation. Money should be spent ensuring good citizens are not living on floors covered in rats piss, not spending money on those who have no respect for the just rule of law." The Independent Party are currently campaigning for a return of corporal punishment and an expansion of the death penalty to include offences involving drugs and sexual offences. "By removing from society forever those who commit the worse crimes we should have nothing left to fear."

The majority Unity Party however have said the nation should find the money. It was Consul Dr. Adebola Kamau who explained "The majority of our prison population are serving sentences of less than three years and for non-violent crimes driven by poverty. If we can focus upon projects to help these people come out and have a chance to drag themselves out of this poverty then we can hopefully cut the prison population in the long term. This however does not mean the prisons should become holiday camps. We do need a deterrent when appropriate. Corporal Punishment often leaves lasting damage that impedes people for life meanwhile as the very name suggests the death penalty is a very permanent state. When a study shows between 4-8% of convictions for serious offences are misjudged then that is a significant number of people who may be wrong harmed or killed."

No policies have yet been suggested by either party.

KING TSHEPO TO MAKE "SPORT FOR ALL"

King Tshepo of Kinjanja has today announced a programme called "Sport for All" intended to find the nations next generation of sports stars. While the King of Kinjanja has no government authority he does have access to significant private funds and has said that he intends to, "ensure sports clubs, schools and community groups can apply for funding so long as that money will be spent to maximise the potential of our youth." It was also announced that the funding will not be specific to Kinjanja. "As the Confederation goes so will Kinjanja. The better the quality of sport across the nation the more competition Kinjanjan's will have and as a result they'll raise their game." The King himself is a keen sportsman and is regularly spotted watching football with members of the extended royal family and is also known to regularly spar in the boxing ring with members of his own security detail.  The exact amount of money is not known but the King has described it as "Substantial

One of those expected to apply is Lumbara MSC who run multiple sports out of an old barn in the town of Lumbara, currently the club has 289 members playing a variety of sports ranging from Football and Basketball to Volleyball and Athletics. Their Club President explained how if successful they would spend the money "Young people take a look at facilities and think its not worth wasting their time coming down. If we can give them somewhere they want to be then of course they'll come in. For every young person who is excelling at our club we know they'll be someone out there who could if they could be encouraged to just give things a go. The King's money is vital as a lifeline to small groups like ours."

THE CONFEDERATE NAVY

The Confederate Navy can trace its history back to the late 1700's when Kinjanja established a naval force with the intention of at first competing and then later co-operating with Paracambi. Once the Confederation existed the Navy was originally put under the control of Kinjanja. Today the Kinjanjans dominate the Navy, mainly as the lifestyle of Gorotoland remains heavily tribal with a focus on land activities and Balakai lack the maritime traditions. Lots of the nations naval equipment is of Paracambian origin. Today the Navy has just over 10,000 men.

THE CONFEDERATION ANTHEM

The song was written in 1880 and first performed at the formal opening of the permanent Senate building in 1881. The official version is sung in Kermah however various versions exist to make allowances for different languages spoken within the Confederation. The song was designed to promote a sense of co-operation and pride within what was at the time a new nation. There however is among a significant minority a dislike of the anthem as it seems to "Foreign" as though trying to sound like more common national anthems from across Mundus and ignoring the tribal spirit of traditional music from the region.

Kermah VersionEnglish Version
1. Enyi Miungu, tunakuomba Uilinde
Shirikisho letu la Kermah
Utuwezeshe kuishi kwa amani
Tutimize kwa malengo yetu

CHORUS

Jumuiya Yetu sote tuilinde
Tuwajibike tuimarike
Umoja wetu ni nguzo yetu
Idumu Jumuiya yetu.

2.Uzalendo pia mshikamano
Viwe msingi wa Umoja wetu
Na tulinde Uhuru na Amani
Mila zetu na desturi zetu.

3.Viwandani na hata vijijini
Hebu sote tufanye kazi kwa bidii
Tujitoe kwa hali na mali
Tujenge Shirikisho bora
1. O Gods, we ask You to protect it
Our Confederation of Kermah
Enable us to live in peace
Fulfill us with our goals

CHORUS

Let us all protect our community
We must take responsibility for our actions
Our unity is our pillar
Endure our Community.

2.Patriotism is also solidarity
Be the foundation of our Union
May we protect Freedom and Peace
Our traditions and customs.

3.Industrial and even rural
Let us all work hard
Let us dedicate ourselves to status and wealth
Let's build a better Confederation

THE UNOFFICIAL ANTHEMS

With a significant minority of the population not finding the official anthem palatable in terms of truly representing the nation a series of "rival" or unofficial anthems are sung. One of the most favoured ones was written in 1904 for a meeting of the first Youth Senate. Supporters of this anthem like the fact it is more inclusive of other languages spoken in the Confederation and seems more joyful which some argue is a hallmark of most tribal songs. Traditionally each verse is sung in a different tribal language and a total of some 62 different verses are known.

The most commonly sung version is below

Gods bless Kermah
May her glory be lifted high
Hear our petitions
Albion bless us, your children

Gods we ask You to protect our nations
Intervene and end all conflicts
Protect us, protect our nation
Protect Kermah, Kermah

Out of the blue of our heavens
Out of the depths of our seas
Over our everlasting mountains
Where the echoing crags resound

Sounds the call to come together,
And united we shall stand,
Let us live and strive for freedom,
In North Albion our land.
