Commonwealth of The Unified Iwi
« on: August 31, 2017, 09:23:45 PM »

Motto:- Kia kaha (Stay Strong)
National Anthem:- Gods Defend Our Free Land

BACKGROUND

The area of the Commonwealth was once called Aotearoa. It was settled by various tribes of Maori people between the period between 800AD - 1300AD.

These tribes arranged themselves into groups referred to Iwi and then in addition into hapū (sub-tribes). They formed a highly hierarchical society based around the role of the Iwi Chief and Iwi Council.

Throughout history the various tribes have always fought small scale battles however this was usually over resources, as farming techniques and yields increased these became less common and Iwi began working together rather than competing.

Between 1500-1600 AD the Commonwealth was settled by various foreign settlers originating from the area of modern day Mercia. These people believed they could conquer this new territory and their superior military technology subjugated the people quickly & established non-native rule. Following their victory at the Battle of Wahaiko in 1708 the invaders' began inviting other non-native groups to the area to establish the Empire of Hassop. They Iwians were treated as slaves and forced off their land.

In 1817 Chief Rangi Umaga began a movement known as Pan-Iwism which sought to break through tribal barriers that the Hassopites had used to keep the Iwians under control. The Invaders would often aid one Iwi in their quest to be the superior, as such this kept the Iwi's competing against each other rather than challenging the invaders. By 1822 Chief Rangi had united around 18 of the 30 Iwi's into one waka and began a guerilla military campaign against the occupiers. This often brought brutal retribution from the ruling government and their collaborators.

In 1830 Chief Rangi was captured and executed , he was denied a traditional burial, something that even those Iwi fighting against him protested, this did much to move even more Iwi over to the side of the Pan-Iwi movement. The war continued with Rangi's son Jehu as leader.

By 1868 the Pan-Iwi movement had conquered much of the region from the invaders who found themselves with less local allies and dwindling support from the other two Mercian Kingdoms who were appalled by the brutal actions. Effectively the nation was split in two "The Empire of Hassop" and the newly formed "Land of the Iwi"

In 1890 the Hassopites which still contested the territory of the "Land of the Iwi" began withdrawing to the Empire. As such the local governing body of the Hassopites made the decision to stop fighting and signed the Treaty of Wahabalu which split the territory between them and the Maori formally. The peninsular was then referred to as Occupied Iwi and Free Iwi by the Maori.

In 1891 a large gathering of all Free Iwi took place and officially formed the Commonwealth. This was a new system where each Iwi was represented on a tribal council. The leader of the Pan-Iwi movement at this time was Piripi Sevasi, he was elected unanimous King and became King Piripi Sevasi the First.

In 1897 the Treaty of Wahablu was broken by Occupied Iwi who attacked the newly formed Commonwealth starting a period of warfare that saw the Commonwealth pushed back. Through various treaties the Commonwealth became a vassal state of the Hassopites once more with the Sevasi family kept as mere puppets.

In 1950 the Hassopites began a brutal destruction of Maori culture in their nation and as such Queen Mara Sevasi ordered an uprising against the Hassopites. This war last almost thirty years and in 1983 the occupying government surrendered and all the territory was absorbed into the Commonwealth. Some factions still held out in hopes of a Hassop return until 2001 when fighting was finally declared over and a formal national constitution put into place forming an elected assembly under a monarch.

KING PIRIPI II

Born in 1964

Crownded in 2013

Piripi was the second son of King Tana III and as such was destined for a life of military service. At the age of 16 he joined the Hauraki Regiment as an officer and earned a reputation for bravery in the final days of the war against Hassop.

During various conflicts to subdue the Eastern part of the Commonwealth between 1980 and 1983 he was Mentioned in Dispatches several times for his actions. In 1992 he tried to join the Commonwealth Special Forces Regiment (CSFR) and failed in the final stages. A year later he tried for what would be his final permitted time and achieved top scores across the board.

Between 1992 - 2003 he served as a Captain in the CSFR leading a Troop of CSFR. In 2001 he was awarded the Tribal Cross, the nations highest medal for bravery for running into terrorist fire to rescue an injured comrade and carry him to safety, during which he himself was injured and cut off from the rest of his troops. Defending a position for over an hour he was able to eventually return to his own unit.

In 2004 he was, as is custom with the CSFR, seconded to the Royal Airborne Rangers Regiment as an instructor for six months during which time he meet his future wife Maata who was the daughter of the Regiments commanding officer.

The pair married in 2009 and now have a son called Kimo who was born in 2011.

In 2008 he returned to the CSFR and now with the Commonwealth united he was made into a Squadron Commander with the rank of Major. He also established the Special Warfare School to teach unconventional warfare to non special forces Regiments.

In 2013 his father and elder brother were killed when an aircraft crashed after an engine caught fire. This catapulted him onto the throne. He was crowned on 7th October 2013 in Hunter's Bay Wharenui.

His reign has so far been one of stability but inward looking but he has begun to change that.

Spoiler: Queen Maata • show

Born in 1978 the Queen was the daughter of General Iakopa Waititi of the Royal Airborne Rangers Regiment. She meet the King when accompanying her father to a Regimental dinner. She got on well with the future King and the two began dating. They married in 2008 and in 2009 she gave birth to their son Kimo.

The Queen is a qualified Doctor and occasionally practiced at Hunter's Bay Accident & Emergency Department. She also is patron of several medical based charities.

Pōwhiri (Welcome Songs)

A pōwhiri usually begins outside the marae with a wero (challenge). A warrior from the tangata whenua (hosts) will challenge the manuhiri (guests), checking to see whether they are friend or foe. He may carry a taiaha (spear-like weapon), and will lay down a token - often a small branch, flower or shell - for the visitors to pick up to show they come in peace. These challenges are often in the form of a dance and song, the words are often violent as they are a challenge to a warrior.

Spoiler: Song of Rangi • show

Rangi Umaga was a tribal chief who united all the Iwi to oppose occupation. He fought valiant battles against difficult odds but with superior knowledge of the land and people he was able to win minor victories. His greatest victory came at Mt.Tapeka, where the enemy had a mountain fort. Rangi and 200 of his men scaled the cliffs in the dark and assaulted the fort capturing it with only 7 men killed. They hacked down the flagpole and burnt the enemy flag.
"Who was this man
Who put out the challenge?
A chief from Ngapuhi
This was Rangi Umaga
He was a strong man
In the eyes of his Maori people
He challenged the government
Of the white skinned people
The Bay was his home
Tapeka his lofty mountain
Be strong, oh friend
Respected Rangi Umaga
Tapeka was climbed
and the flagpole of evil knocked flat
to overcome the power of the enemy.
Keep alert there Rangi Umaga!
A chief of Ngapuhi
A strong man
The pride of the Maori people
Keep alert there Rangi Umaga!"

Spoiler: Pan Iwism War Chant • show

Originally each Iwi had their own challenge song collection, however under Rangi Umaga the nation began to mould itself into one large Iwi, as such it needed some new songs and challenges that could apply to all. This one was written personally by Umaga as a warning to those who would take the Commonwealths territory.

"Aye, ay! Aye, ay"
I shall speak to the whole world
The Iwi is famished.
Let the foreigner and sojourner beware
Today I am the destroyer of souls
I am everywhere
To the invader and killer
Gone has my humanness
Ocean I drink, fire I dine
To death or victory my will is fine"

Spoiler: Red Legion Memorial chant • show

You who, charged like a flood,
Wrap whole armies in blood;
You who scaled the hill steep
When the weary warriors sleep,
And awake them but to die
With the battle cry;
You who, when the fight is done,
Roast the flesh on heated stone.
Brother of the thunder, scarlet-belted warrior
For ever and for ever shall the warriors love you;
Wealth and power
Are all in thy forceful hand.
Earth-shakers
Spoil-takers

Spoiler: Haka to honour East Moreland guests • show

Kia whakatupato
ka haere te kuini honi
kararehe nanakia
niho rite hoari
kiri rite toka
teina whakakake
wairua hoa toa
kotahi o matou toto
tangohia to honi
me te moe pai"

Be Warned
Here walks the Honeybadger
A fierce beast
teeth like daggers
Flesh like rock
Proud Brothers
Fellow Warrior souls
Our blood is as one
Take your honey
and sleep deep.

GOVERNMENT STRUCTURE

The Kaitiaki

Translated this means "The Guardians" it an elected body which is responsible for the handling of domestic legislation, foreign policy is the sole responsibility of the Monarch. The Kaitiaki is an elected body of 120 representatives. They are elected from the ten Iwi which have over 5million members, each Iwi selecting ten representatives known as Guardians. The remaining 20 are elected by those from the "Minor" Iwi and by those who are residents paying income tax but belonging to no Iwi, these each select 10 Guardians. Elections are held every five years using proportional representation within each Iwi.

The body selects from within it's number a Chief Guardian, currently the Chief Guardian is Maata Piripi and she has held the position since 2012. The Chief Guardian often comes from the party that holds most seats in the Kaitiaki which is currently the One Iwi Party.

Kaitiaki Hall, Hunters Bay, home of the Kaitiaki

The Monarch

Officially the Monarch does not belong to an Iwi, however the current King's lineage is from the Ngāpuhi Iwi, the largest in the Commonwealth. This however has done little to influence the current King's policy.

The King has five roles in government.

1. He has the sole voice of the Commonwealth on international matters.
2. He signs domestic policy into law once it has passed the Kaitiaki.
3. He may send any policy not recieving 75% of the Kaitiaki vote for public referendum.
4. He may pardon criminals.
5. He dissolves the Kaitiaki when it is time for election and officially appoints the Chief Guardian.

The King has three residences.

Umaga Palace, Built on the spot alleged to have been where Rangi Umaga built his own hut when 18 years old. It is on the edge of modern day Hunters Bay and a simple estate house and largely used as a museum most of the year round, it still is used for symbolic functions

Hunter's Bay Palace, built on an artificial island in the bay that gives the capital it's name. It is today the main residence of the monarch and is completely self sufficient in terms of electricity and water supplies.

SilverFern Estate, a large country house and estate 30km outside Hunter's Bay and on the edge of the nations national park. It is one of the current Kings favourite places in the Commonwealth.

THE IWI

At present the nation has 10 tribes (known as Iwi) that are considered "Major Iwi" that means they have a registered membership of more than 5million members. To be a member of an Iwi you need to have one parent who was part of that Iwi or be adopted in by an elder. A person my consider themselves art of more than one iwi through marriage, friendship etc, however officially they may only belong to one.

HUNTERS BAY

The city of Hunters Bay is the capital of the Commonwealth and has an estimated population of around 1.5million people. It is built around a large natural bay as well as featuring several islands. The city is also home to the nations government and the royal families Palace. The city was occupied by the Seleucid up until 1994 and was the scene of rather heavy fighting up until 1997. As such the city doesn't feature the many high raise buildings you would associate with the various modern capitals of Mundus. The city does retain a rather green charm as being close to nature features significantly in Maori culture. The city today features two harbours both of which are used by both civilian and military traffic. West Harbour is the largest port in the nation and handles the majority of the nations merchant trade however it is expected the nations new super-port built just 10km East of the city.

The city sits in a region surrounded by extinct volcanoes which have created a variety of small lakes and craters. Many of these areas are now popular for hiking and camping and a handful have a religious significance to the Maori. The last eruption is thought to have taken place around 1,000 years ago.

The city is much like the rest of the Commonwealth in terms of its demographics in the sense that the city is very undiverse. 95% of the city are Maori, 3% of Seleucid descent and 2% from a variety of other places, largely in the Commonwealth as part of recent business dealings. In terms of religion around 80% of the population follow the traditional Maori faith, 10% are Christian, 3% Anahitaist and the rest follow a variety of other faiths. It is a sad reality that the Seleucid population face a high degree of racism and are among the poorest in society. Many of them are not full Selecuid and are in fact descendants of Seleucid soldiers who fratinised with the locals either forcibly or in some cases as a way of surviving the occupation in comfort. There are a large number of these Seleucid who are in fact orphans having had their father leave the nation and Mothers effectively abandoning the child because of its heritage. There is a higher than normal occurrence of birth defects in these Seleucid children thanks to the attempts by some mothers to terminate their pregnancy using herbal drugs which effectively poisoned the fetus.

Hunter's Bay Palace, built on an artificial island in the bay that gives the capital it's name. It is today the main residence of the monarch and is completely self sufficient in terms of electricity and water supplies.

The Palace has 20 bedrooms and was once a Seleucid fortress protecting the entrance to the harbour.
Victory House

This was the home of the former Governor of Aotearoa. On the 16th May 2001 the final Seleucid rebels surrendered and an agreement for their departure made.

Today the site is a museum and memorial for those who died during the nearly 500 years of occupation.
The Marae

In the Maori language a Marae is a place of meeting for an Iwi. The Marae is thought to be the site of the nations oldest meeting hall and as such the nations most sacred site.

MAORI MUNDUS

Many places on Mundus have names used by the Maori that is based on the people's stories related to mythological stories.

Matilda Canals - Poka Tangi Te Keo (The Ditch made by the Monster)

Once upon a time two sea monsters, known as Te Keo, lived in the Krimeon Sea. This sea was contained to the East by a land mass (today would like Aranye and Ardia with Heyra in the middle) occasionally the Te Keo would see clear water in the Kyne and longed to investigate. One day one of the Te Keo used its strength to forge a ditch through the land mass and pushed Aranye and Ardia further apart and made its way into the Krimeon.
