BACKGROUND

The Sacred Ecclesiastical State (Latin: Sacris Status Ecclesiasticus; Italian: Sacro Stato Ecclesiastico) is both a sovereign Absolute Theocracy and the centre of the Catholic faith. It is based in southern Albion. With 2.6 million inhabitants it is among the smallest nations in Albion and Mundus.

The nation recognises the Pope, as elected by the Papal conclave, as its Head of State who has the final overall say over matters of policy. While this is the case the day to day non-religious management of the nation falls to the Papal Legate who is an official appointed by the Pope. Unlike many nations the Ecclesiastical State has often been governed by those who have not been born within its borders.

The Ecclesiastical State  dates back to early Christianity and is the main episcopal see of Latin and Eastern Catholic adherents around the globe. The nation is centred around the Vatican and is made up of a large city known as Celestis and then a significant rural area that in days gone by was primarily used to provide the huge numbers of staff in the Vatican with their needs. The Catholic faithful around the world believe that Saint Peter first travelled south from Vanora and into Midaranye where he established a Christian centre (Antioch TBD). This has since fallen into ruins. From there he crossed the Kyne and lived for some time in Corinth (TBD-Marseille???). Finally he landed in southern Albion and established the foundation of a Church there that grew into the Vatican. It is thought Peter was executed in around 64-68 AD.

Since its creation, the Ecclesiastical State has become a major religious and cultural centre for Albion and the global, housing sites such as St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums, as such Celestis is home to some of the world's most famous paintings and sculptures. Throughout much of its history, the Ecclesiastical State has dealt with numerous crises, including the rise of liberalism, socialism and efforts for a secular democracy.

THE PAPAL GUARD

The Ecclesiastical State maintains a small military force, largely for protective purposes although historically they have deployed outside their borders for humanitarian operations. While trained for combat their main role is to provide security for the Pope and his property.

The Papal Guard is in essence a mercenary force and it counts recruits from many nations among its ranks. To be permitted to serve an individual must  have a professional degree or high school diploma and must be between 19 and 30 years of age and at least 174 cm (5 ft 8.5 in) tall. They must have also completed military training in their home nation and be able to obtain a certificate of good conduct. The recruits must also be unmarried and must remain so while in service. They sign contracts for periods of two years at a time. Guardsman receive free accommodation and are paid a comfortable wage.

While on ceremonial duty they wear a  Renaissance style uniform and carry a  halberd and sword. While the colourful guardsman are a popular sight with tourists they are accompanied at all times by other guardsman attired in plain blue and armed with modern weapons however these largely stay out of sight.

There are currently 15,000 Guardsman in service. They are split between three Battalions

1. Battalion of St. Ignatius
2. Battalion of St. Sebastien
3. Battalion of St. Martin of Tours

The Battalions rotate between duties by spending four months on ceremonial guard, then on on training and finally as part of the Rapid Reaction Force
