Deja vu/Rebirth (Mktvartvelo's coronation, Open RP)
« on: December 23, 2021, 06:04:42 PM »

From the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo
To: Heads of state, Government representatives, diplomats

Private communication

The Unitary State of Mktvartvelo invites you to witness a ceremony which symbolize the periodic rebirth of our nation under a new leadership, through the coronation of a new sovereign in the person of Brzdmtsveli-elect Ketevan Chakhava.

The ceremony will be held in Ktsatskuri, our capital city, and as it is traditional, it will be divided in three parts: the proclamation of a new Brzdmtsveli in the State Chamber, a religious ceremony in the outskirts of Ktsatskuri, and a coronation reception and dinner in Tsmindagoraki Palace. All transport, security, and lodging will be guarantee by Mktvartvelian authorities with no costs.

Yours sincerely,
Premiership of the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo

OOC: The message is supposed to be sent to every Mundus government which has (or it is reasonable to have) official diplomatic relations with the Unitary State Mktvartvelo. For disputed governments (such as countries under civil war or a similar controversial situation), you may ask me to confirm you if that would be the case. You can either post a confirmation of your assistance (or absence) and/or an introduction about who's visiting on your nation's behalf.

The RP will likely start on December 27, probably skipping directly -after an introduction- to the first part of the coronation. You may indicate if you would like to skip both the official proclamation or the religious ceremony (or both), and attending directly the final dinner in case that would be preferable for your nation's representatives.

Ktsatskuri, Unitary State of Mktvartvelo
Aprisi 2, 2677

The crowd have started to gather in front of the National Palace, seat of both chambers of Mktvartvelo's national parliament, where the proclamation of the new Brzdmtsveli (head of state of the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo) was going to be proclaimed. There was not much expectation about the proclamation itself, and more about the ritual and traditions associated with it, as well as the feeling to witness something historical, as since the 1920s, the election of the Brzdmtsveli by the Council of State was announced to the public and the media beforehand the coronation was organized.

The death of Brzdmtsveli Tamaz did not come as a surprise either, as his health problems had been known already for a while, as he had been pretty much disappeared from the public eye in the last weeks. Although the proceedings of the Council of State were secret, the election of Ketevan Chakhava came as a bigger surprise, not because she was not well-known, but because the historical precedents. She did not belong to any of the historical twenty clans which were considered to have the right to rule the country -even if such a thing did not exist legally- although she was the great-great-granddaughter of Brzdmtsveli Malkhaz IV, from the Gabedi clan, who had held the office of the Brzdmtsveli from 1826 to 1881. The memory of her great-great-grandmother, whom the Gabedi and other central and northwestern clan considered a foreign usurper, hanged over the family reputation for decades, although it improved thanks to Ketevan's mother, Tamara Chakhava, who had been close to Brzdmtsveli Endzela and had a reputation of a devout follower of the Order of Simartlea, Mktvartvelo's national religion. Tamara, however, had died in 2017, and it was considered a bad omen that a Brzdmtsveli came to office after his or her mother's death. But these factors, of course, were considered a moot point, ancient anecdotes for the younger generation while the older generation felt a more important reassurance that she had not been involved in politics before, unlike other favourite or rumoured candidates to replace Brzdmtsveli Tamaz IV.

As the tradition established, the event in the National Palace was, even if the only with proper legal value, just one of the three events with the traditional and symbolical coronation of a head of state in Brzdmtsveli: first, the proclamation at the national parliament, which symbolized the union between the Brzdmtsveli and the state institutions; secondly, a religious ceremony which symbolized the respect to the tradition and the role of Brzdmtsveli as "Protector of the Order of Simartlea"; and thirdly, the official dinner -held for first time in 1926-, considered the first ceremonial event performed as Brzdmtsveli with represenatives of Mktvartvelo's society.

"Nice to see you again", Anzor Nakashidze told to an unidentified ambassador. "You have come a bit early...the event is going to start in about two hours".

"I can imagine", the ambassador said. "We did not want to miss it!".

"Indeed", Anzor replied. "Is your first time in our national parliament?".

"Oh", the foreigner answered. "I have only visited it once in an official visit, a few weeks after my arrival to your country...".

"Alright", Anzor said. "I'll show you again if you don't mind. The event will be held in the Northern Chamber. As you'll see, the first gallery is reserved for religious authorities and important people of our society, while the second gallery is reserved for diplomats and foreign representatives, so you may have the best view, I imagine!".

"Oh", the diplomat replied, "it sounds a huge honour. It will be a pleasure to witness this historical ceremony!".

"Indeed", Anzor simply replied as they continued advancing through the National Palace.

OOC: Here we come with a bit of delay. You can post your arrival or introduction of your characters, for those interested.

"Trying to take a last breath, isn't it?", Tamaz said, while leaning in one of the columns of the National Palace, as he saw fellow member of the National Assembly, Zviad Maichadze, looking at the distant crowds, from the main door.

"Kind of...Mr. Eksanishvili", Zviad replied, who felt relatively off guard related to Eksanishvili, as they had barely been introduced since he joined the National Assembly, while being both cautious and intrigued about Eksanishvili's reputation as the most well-known and visible face of the once infamous Brotherhood. "I'm told that the Brzdmtsveli-elect will arrive in a few minutes".

"Yes", Tamaz replied, seemed mostly indifferent, "it is about time".

"Nervous about this...historical moment?", Tamaz added as Zviad kept his silence.

"You may so", Zviad politely replied. "I'm mostly curious than nervous, I could say".

"Indeed", Tamaz replied. "According to what our older colleagues say, it's an interesting ceremony, for sure. A bit theatrical for the younger generation, maybe, but nothing to be to concerned...at least regarding the ceremony and the event itself".

"Yes, I understand", Zviad replied. "It is still a honour to be part of this".

"Oh, it should be", Tamaz said. "At least it would be a relatively calm day, without much interference. It doesn't look that the tsigoymi will be visiting us".

"Yes", Zviad replied, "it is a busy period of the year for them, I assume".

"Anyway", Tamaz added, finishing their conversation, "it's time to enter back".

"Sure", Zviad replied. "It was a pleasure to have this conversation with you", he added as Tamaz entered the palace without looking back.

National Palace

The joint session of the National Assembly and the Council of State was already being held in the National Palace, as the ceremony was about to start.

Chairman Vakhtang Tsiskaridze addressed the chamber with a long speech, in a monotonous tone, which included a detailed mention of the institutional traditions and customs of the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo, a mention of some of the most important Brzdmstveli, including a praising mention of late Brzdmtsveli Tamaz IV, and finally and introduction of the new Brzdmtsveli, Ketevan Chakhava. Vakhtang was not exactly known for being one of the most charismatic or gifted orators in the country, and it showed in the reception of his speech, which many probably felt that it was rather unspiring and boring, even if solemn and instructive.

Ketevan entered the chamber as soon her name was indirectly announced, as it had been the tradition since 1926, by the Speaker of the National Assembly. She was wearing a plain blue pastel colour dress matched with a restrained use of jewelry. The whole chamber stood up as she entered the chamber. As scripted dialogue between the Brzdmtsveli-elect and the Speaker and Chairman followed, aimed to make explicit the identity and the compromise of the candidate. Then followed to pledge, with one hand on the chest, to serve the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo, with no clan, family, class, and personal interests in sight, and to defend the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo.

Two assistants brought then a small cushion, which they offered to the Speaker of the National Assembly (traditionally, the assistants were actually the unmarried daughters or granddaughters of some senior member of the parliament). On the cushion, there was a ring which included details of every former Brzdmstveli. The Speaker offered the ring to Ketevan. As soon as she completely adjusted the ring, the Chairman of the Council of State proclaimed to the chamber: "Your Sovereign", which officially marked the moment the Brzdmtsveli became the head of state of the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo. As these words were uttered, and Ketevan turned around to the chamber, both the Speaker and the Chairman gave two steps and kneelt down in front of her. The rest of the representatives of the joint session immediately bowed as a sign of respect, while staff, assistants, and rest of guests, at least those from Mktvartvelo, erupted in a long applause.

Ketevan lightly bowed her head while showing a proud smile and then she left the chamber, as the two assistants who brought the cushion devoutly indiciated her. As the tradition goes, the representatives joined the applause only the moment immediately after that the new Brzdmtsveli's feet had left the room.

As she left the National Palace and crossed the palace gardens, Ketevan patiently waved her hands to the crowd who saluted and greeted at the distance. She entered the car which was awaiting, and left the square. As the tradition establishes, she will go toward the Shrine of Mune Mortserasa, where the religious ceremony of the Brzdmtsveli proclamation had been held since at least the late 18th century. The ceremony will be held in three hours, where only a reduced number of witnesses and guests would be invited.

Shrine of Mune Mortserasa

Not without a bit of delay, Ketevan Chakhava arrived at the Shrine of Mune Morterasa, considered one of the oldest shrines in Mktvartvelo, situated about fifty kilometres from the capital city of the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo. Along the right side of the open are on the hill where the shrine was situated, a few seats where the guests and witnesses of the ceremony would be welcomed. The number of guests and witnesses would be considerably restricted, as it was traditional. Between them, there was the Prime Minister, both the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Chairman of the State Council, as well as the most senior and yougest members of chambers of the parliament. As well as other members of the clergy, the armed forces leadership and from other state institutions, the relatives of the new Brzdmtsveli and those from the former ones, completed the number of witnesses. Besides them, there were a limited number of foreign diplomats and guests.

"Welcome, Your Most High Majesty", a religious apprentice received Ketevan, being the first person to address her directly with her title. "The ceremony will start in about twenty minutes.

"Thanks", Ketevan simply replied. From the distance, she would recognize Sinatdedopali Tsiuri, along High Priestesses Elodeba and Eter. Since the 18th century, the ceremony of the election of a new head of state was the only time that the three highest members of the clergy in the Order of Simartlea could be seen outside the Shrine of Dalotsvili Shadrevani at the same time (and at the same place).

Along the shrine there was a stone platform, similar to the temples of the Order of Simartlea where sacrifices were performed. However, the shrine was rather unique compared to most religious buildings in Mktvartvelo. Although it was one of the oldest religious sites in the country, it was not an active religious site, and the head of the shrine was not an actual priestess but a religious magistrate. Offerings and religious rituals were rare, only in very special occassions. It was also unique the fact that the shrine was not consacrated to an unique god or goddess. According to the legend, the shrine was built from stones from a large number of existing temples. Although this latter claim was disputed, although it was not clear if some of those mentioned temples had actually existed.

The Sinatdedopali remained next to the shrine, talking with two other priestess when the final preparations for the rite were started, about five minutes later. Assistant priestesses, along a few younger religious apprentrices brought two animals, an adult horse and a young calf, as well as transparent box carrying a snake to the platform. Another small group of religious apprentrices were carrying some piece of clothing. Meanwhile other assistant priestesses brought certain kind of bowls and tools. When they were given the signal, two women -who were wearing white clothing, similar but still distinct to the other women on the platform- helped to stun to the black male horse. The animal fell, motionless but still alive, to the ground. The young women struggled to orient the head of the animal toward the right place.

When finally time had arrived. Three priestesses took their places in the platform -the two who had been talking with the Sinatdedopali, and a third one who had been closely the previous scene-, they started to sing different but in unison hymns. Then, the Sinatdedopali and the two High Priestesses followed, placing themselves exactly in the middle of the platform. Ketevan Chakhava approached the platform and stopped in front of it, where two girls were standing, holding some clothing. They helped her to put that long tunic or mantle over her own clothing. The tunic was white but it could be perceived, even from the distance, its rich embroidery full with details and colours. As it was the tradition, the tunic was decorated with embroidery that described certain motives and events about the person, his or her life, family, clan, as well as other historical events, from either the history of the nation or significant contemporary events.

Then, High Priestesses Eter and Elodeba helped Ketevan to step on the platform. As she did, the Sinatdedopali held Ketevan's both hands, and both repeated the oath to serve as symbolical "Protector of the Order of Simartlea". As the ceremonial oath was over, the Sinatdedopali looked back at the other three priestesses to start the sacrifice. They then intoned the sacrificial hymns and the proper sacrifice started. The method was slightly different depending the animal (in the case of the male horse, two religious apprentices held the head of the animal, while other held the ritual knife; in the case of the calf, one religious apprentice held the animal while the assistant priestess was prepared with another knife; while in the case of the snake, only one held and put to death to the small animal). In all cases, the sacrifice involved a clean cut, while another religious apprentice holding a metal bowl aimed to gather the poured blood of the animal before it touched the floor until it was full enough.

Ketevan looked seriously at the ritual. Although she had witnessed many ritual sacrifices, of course, it was the first time she had witnessed the killing of a snake, which sacrifice was rare in Mktvartvelo as they were considered a secret animal. It was only one of the few rituals where the sacrifice of a snake was allowed.

As the ritual ended, and enough blood had poured from the already deceased animals, the three religious apprentices holding the bowls stood up, and approached High Priestesses Eter and Elodeba. Eter was holding a golden bowl in which the blood from the three bowls was poured into. As this was finished and the religious apprentices retired back, High Priestess Elodeba dropped some kind of molasses on the golden bowl and started to stir the mixture with a ritual tool. When this was over, the Sinatdedopali indicated Ketevan to move to the center of the platform, where Elodeba and Eter were holding the golden bowl. Then, the Sinatdedopali started to sign a solemn hymn, and proceed to "wash" Ketevan's hands with the bloody mixture until the hymn, which Eter and Elodeba accompanied at a lower tone, finished. Then, the religious apprentices poured a inflammable liquid, and then the eyes of the two mammals and the head of the snake. As they did that, another two religious apprentices helped Ketevan to descend from the stone platform. She was helped to clean her hands with a long and white towel a few steps further. At the same time, a fourth priestess throw a burning piece of silk over the stone container where the rests of the sacrificed animals were poured.

As Ketevan advanced through the esplanade along the temple, some girls threw flowers and petals before her own steps.

"As soon as you wish, Your Most High Majesty", Kalisha, her main assistant that day, told Ketevan, "we're ready to go back to Ktsatskuri. The main suite of Mdidare Hotel has been booked if you wish to rest a bit before the dinner".

"Oh, sure", Ketevan replied. "Yes, I would like to go immediately, of course, as soon as we received the greetings from the usual suspects".

"But first", Ketevan added, "lend me your handkerchief, if you don't mind".

"Of course!", Kalisha said. "Excuse me, Your Most High Majesty", she added as she looked on her own pulse.

Back in Ktsatskuri, Ishviati Mtsenarabi Palace

About six hours later, everything was ready in Ishviati Mtsenarabi Palace to receive the guests in which would be the first official reception of Ketevan Chakhava as Brzdmtsveli of the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo. The third part of the ceremony, had a much more recent history. While the first two aspects of the ceremony were aimed to symbolize the compromise of the head of state with the state and the religion, the third one, was aimed to serve as a formal presentation of the new head of state to the most important representatives of Mktvartvelo's society. Of the three, it was certainly also the most relaxed and banal one, for sure.
