Palaces of the Imperial Family, Part One — The Ikas Palace

Historical Main Building of the Ikas Palace

One of the two main palaces of Ikan, the Ikas Palace was built upon the titular terrace found on the east bank of the Kheilat river. Before the rise of the Sherkoz and the Second Empire, when the Hailun ruled Arashkai, the area that would become the Ikas palace was a garrison for the then-rulers of Ikan, Clan Kina. However, when Clan Kina rebelled against the Hailun, their lands were seized and granted to the Sherkoz, at the time led by Israi Vahram. Under Israi, the garrison at Ikas would be moved, wishing to build a new fortress on the strategically important terrace, though it is entirely possible he wanted to distance himself from the previously-built Itasikin fortress across the river. Upon his accession to the Throne in 1476, Arkan I would elect to move the Imperial Court to Ikan, officially turning the Ikas fortress into the new Imperial Palace, recognizing the diminishing importance of the old capital at Khoros and the wealth that Ikan had brought in thanks to its position along multiple key trade routes. The Imperial Palace would undergo several changes between the 1840s and 1890s, adding a western-styled portion to the complex. This portion of the palace would be modernized in the 1960s and is expected to undergo further renovations in the next few years.
Map of the Ikas Palace

The construction of the Ikas fortress would see the Kheilat river diverted to create a moat around it, turning the palace complex into an island. This moat would be expanded starting in the 1840s to encompass what is now considered the entirety of the Palatial complex, though it should be noted that, for the purposes of the map, the museums that take up the north end of the complex do not appear. As a result, the modern palace complex now has a perimeter of roughly 6 km and has an area of 1.15 square kilometers.
The North-Eastern Gatehouse

While they no longer fill a defensive role, the many gatehouses of the Ikas palace still serve a ceremonial function and, in the event that they are needed once again, have had their interiors reinforced to once again serve that defensive task. They are manned at all times by members of the Imperial Guard and are often the site of the daily guard-mounting ceremonies at noon, wherein each force is relieved by the next shift. Due to how the palace is laid out, those who enter will usually do so on foot, though options for faster transport do exist as well.
Imperial Guard Headquarters & Barracks
The Imperial Guard Headquarters

Formerly built to house the Privy Council before the construction of the modern Imperial Household Agency building a few hundred meters away, the Imperial Guard Headquarters is where all activities regarding the protection of the Emperor and his family within the city of Ikan are coordinated. There are similar structures to this one in every city which houses an Imperial residence, however, all of them are subservient to the one located here. Just a short distance north of the structure is the barracks for the Imperial Guard garrison at the Ikas palace.
Ikas Palace Hospital

Built in the late 1920s to better treat the then-Emperor Arkan V, the Ikas Palace Hospital is an on-site medical facility to maintain the health of the Imperial Family at all times. Most of the current Imperial Family was born at this site, with the obvious exception being the spouses of members of the family. The facility underwent significant remodeling in the early 2010s and is now one of the more advanced facilities in the city alongside the nearby Kosakai Hospital.
Imperial Gallery & Archive
Imperial Archive Building

Built on the site of the old Imperial Library, the Imperial Gallery is a private collection of artwork owned by the Emperor, primarily relating to his ancestors and to the Empire as a whole. It is located in the shadow of the old Palace and is near the Imperial archive, a sort of successor to the old library, though nowhere near as grand. It prominently features portraits of most of the past emperors, as well as many former kings of Misra. These portraits were, before the fire that destroyed them (much to one emperor's chagrin), stored in temples across the nation, as well as a few within the old Imperial Palace at Khoros.
Ikaiyan State Hall and Old Palace
Ikaiyan State Hall with the Imperial Throne

Perhaps one of the most famous parts of the Imperial Palace, the Ikaiyan State Hall is located close to the Old Imperial Palace built in the late 11th and early 12th centuries, though it was built in the late 15th century to help facilitate the newly-established Imperial Court in the city. However, it would not see its current usage until the early 20th century with the enthronement of the Tankai Eshva following the death of Arkan V. Until the 1860s, the old palace was the formal residence of the Emperor, though with the completion of the expansion, the Emperor's residence moved further west into the new palaces. Nonetheless, the Ikaiyan State Hall remains one of the most important sites both for the Imperial Family and the Ishitic faith. Inside, there is a small shrine to the Vakhet Eshva, Arkan I.
Imperial Household Agency & Privy Council Building
Joint-Privy Council & Imperial Household Agency Building
The structure which houses both the offices of the Imperial Household Agency and the Privy Council during its meetings. It is located close to the State Banquet Hall and often is one of the first stops for newly-arrived dignitaries.
State Banquet Hall

Despite being called the "State Banquet Hall", the structure is more of a general meeting area for foreign dignitaries as well as housing the Emperor's personal offices. Of course, it still performs the function described by its name, but this is the exception and not the rule.
Imperial Shrine

The Shrine at the Ikas Palace memorializes the deceased of Clan Sherkoz and is the burial ground of most of them other than a few Emperors, those being Arkan I, Arkan V, and Ashot I.
