Free Autonomous Territory of Jugland

Government Type: Devolved autonomy under an elected executive system
Population: 5,196,000
Capital City: Albrektberg
Demonym: Juglander
Ethnicity: Juglander 94%; Other Coft Aranye ethnicities 5%; Others 1%
Official languages: Csletian and Mktvartvelian
Religions: no official religion

Background

Jugland is an associated state within the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo. Originally founded by West Coft Aranye settlers, Jugland is a metropolitan area and region on the Gulf of Safraen.

Under the Agreement of Azavrelia, Jugland is a special administrative region within the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo. Jugland has its own constitution, adopted in 2008 and amended in 2019, and wide self-autonomy in many areas. Basic Laws passed in Mktvartvelo's parliament have constitutional status in both Mktvartvelo and Jugland, although the latter can be granted exception regarding a basic law, although that both sides agree - if not, any basic law becomes law in Jugland's territory. However, the Unitary State of Mktvartvelo acts on behalf of Jugland in foreign policy and defense issues, and Jugland has no armed forces.

Most notoriously, Jugland has a strict separation between church and state, and Mktvartvelo's religious and inheriance legislation do not apply in the territory of the Free Autonomous Territory of Jugland.

All Juglander residents were granted Mktvartvelian citizenship, and as such, there is no Juglander citizenship. However, Jugland's authorities have the right to issue its own identity cards, which are granted according Jugland's legislation, and it does not operate under Mktvartvelo's own citizenship legislation. For Juglander citizens born after 2010, however, Mktvartvelian citizeship legislation applies. Only Mktvartvelian citizens can vote in elections to the parliament, although Juglander authorities are granted the right to have their own electoral law for local and regional elections.

Tavík, Eyrifjorduric Federation

"Ah, you arrived", Gudmuntur Olafursson told his brother as soon as he saw him entering. "How are things going in Midverslund?".

"Everything is going fine, I guess", Sigurdur Olafursson answered. "I can't complain. I thought you were in Eskárkrókur".

"No, for God's sake", Gudmuntur Olafursson replied. "I stay most of the time here, in Tavík. I only visit Nýttgrund from time to time, when I have some business to do. Not enjoying exactly that place".

"I understand", Sigurdur said. "I really hate funerals...Not even sure why I came here. I know that Hrafn was close to Dad...once, although I have never met him".

"You did", Gudmuntur replied. "But you can't remember. It was a long time ago".

"You may be right", Sigurdur said. "I only decided to come because the bank decided to invest in the company last Spring...This is getting more crowded than I expected. Have you seen Fannar recently? I haven't met him in two months".

"He's doing some business in Nỳttgrund now", Gudmuntur answered. "Nothing serious. Just relax and wait, Sigurdur. This is not a bad place for fishing. You could find all the main bigwigs here".

"Yes, I imagine", Sigurdur said. "Is that Magnús Haraldursson?".

"Indeed", Gudmuntur answered. "He has been talking with Fannar Erlendursson for twenty minutes...I wonder what those two are talking about. Before you arrived, President Syndur Geirr came, but he left soon. He didn't look great, I must say".

"Who's that woman talking with President Lúdvik?, Sigurdur asked.

"Don't you read newspapers, brother?", Gudmuntur replied. "That's Hrafn's daughter, Bergljót".

"Ah, I see, Gudmuntur", Sigurdur said. "What's going to happen with the bank now?".

"I'm not sure", Gudmuntur answered. "The old man chose a strange moment to die. It's said that Bergljót could take charge. It is said she had an important role in the negotiations which led to the merge with Aslandsbank".

"Anyway", Gudmuntur added, "look who's coming here".

"Good evening", Haraldur Ingvarsson said. "Am I interrupting anything?".

"You are not", Gudmuntur Olafursson answered. "How is Signý?".

"Your sister is fine", Haraldur Ingvarsson answered. "She's in Stykkaeyjar, with the children".

"Let's move", Sigurdur said. "This is about to start".

"Listen!", Halldóra Erlendurdóttir. "That's your song! That must mean something, it can't be a coincidence".

"Don't be silly!", Cyneburga Wigmundóttir replied. "We are alreading coming, I believe this is the street...There is a space there, stop the car".

"Welcome!", Kristján Rúnarsson said. "You must be Cyneburga".

"That's", the woman answered. "Nice to meet you...".

"Excuse me", Kristján said. "My name is Kristján Rúnarsson. Didn't Inna, my secretary, mention you...?".

"Oh yes! She did", Cyneburga answered. "I only forgot the name. And I don't know exactly how things work here".

"That understable", Kristján said. "Mr. Sigurdur Olafursson would have been very pleased to meet you. Unfortunately, as Inna told you, he was not able to be here today as consequence of a sudden compromise. But we are very glad to have you on board in Ímynd Records. You will have the chance to meet him sooner or later".

"Sure", Cyneburga said. "I personally don't mind...".

"We hope to meet Mr. Sigurdur as soon as possible, of course", the other women interrupted.

"Excuse me", Kristján said, uncertain about the identity of the green-haired young woman, who looked slightly older than Cyneburga. "Are you a relative...maybe Miss...?".

"My name is Halldóra Erlendurdóttir", the woman answered. "I am...Mrs. Cyneburga's agent, obviously".

"Ah, I see", Kristján replied. "Let's start with our business...There is no point to make this longer than necessary, as everything is mostly ready, I hope".

Kristján started to look around his desk. "Here we have", he said. "This copy is for you, this is for the company".

He gave a bunch of documents to Cyneburga, who barely cared to leaf the first pages. Halldóra took the papers directly from Cyneburga's hands.

"Is it everything in order?", Kristján asked.

"It says a six-year contract...", Halldóra said. "I thought we decided it was going to be a four years contract. Isn't six year a lot of time".

"I guess so...", Cyneburga said.

"Ah, yes...", Kristján said, "we could change that. But it's only policy to sign six-year contracts. We like to offer our artist stability. We are currently the second company in the Federation, as you may have realized, our catalogue is not long, but we look for quality rather for quantity, and which a clear long-term orientation. In any case, as clause 3.2 establishes, if she sells more than 250,000 copies in any format, for either the next three years or after her first two albums, the contract could be negotiated again, always in better terms".

"250,000", Cyneburga whispered to Halldóra, "that sounds too many...It's better to finish with this anyway".

"Wait", Halldóra said while she kept reading. "Let me finish this first".

"Anything you would like to add?", Kristján said two minutes later.

"No, I don't think so", Halldóra answered.

"Excellent", Kristján said. "You only need to sign the document then".

"One sign here...and another here. That's all", he explained to Cyneburga.

"Perfect", Kristján added. "I'd offer you something to drink in order to celebrate it, but I'm afraid that my office is empty right now...We will keep this paper, this copy is for you".

"Thanks", Halldóra said. "But we have things to do anyway. When will everything be ready?".

"No problem", Kristján replied. "We'll start in two weeks. It shouldn't took more than two months, but it depends on you. There is no hurry, but we have everything ready for your success. By the way, do you enjoy the theatre?".

"The theatre?", Halldóra asked.

"As you may know", Kristján said, "music is only one sector of our corporation. We have tickets from some of our shows, either here on in Tavík, if you are interested. Don't worry, it is for free. But we like to care about our artists, some distraction may inspired them I hope...If you are interested, give the details to Inna and she will take care of it".

"Ah, I see", Halldóra replied. "Maybe, why not. But I am afraid we are leaving the city...we will come back in two weeks. I hope everything will be ready by then".

"Sure", Kristján said. "We will prepare everything. It was a pleasure to meet you, both".

"See you then", Cyneburga timidly replied.

Tavík, Eyrifjorduric Federation

It had been a calm month for Lúdvik Gudmuntursson since he was replaced as President of the Republic of Narthaur by his own political heir, elected president Baldur Steinnsson. Notwithstanding, he had remained as Chairman of the National Democratic Party, although it was unclear if he was going to remain for long in that post after leaving office.

"Mr. Lüdvik", his secretary suddenly announced, "Mister Fannar Erlendursson has just arrived".

"Excellent", Lúdvik simply replied. "Tell him to enter immediately to enter to my office".

Lúdvik greeted Fannar Erlendursson coldy. "Glad to see you again, please sit down".

"What does it bring you to Tavík?", Lúdvik asked.

"I am coming here because we need to prepare our federal campaign, I am sure you are well aware of that. But I have other things in mine when I asked you this meeting".

"Go ahead", Lúdvik replied.

"Eiríkur Haraldursson is in your list to the assembly", Fannar bluntly said. "There are rumours that he will be a candidate to the Eyrifjorduric Council".

"I can not confirm you that, as you may understand", Lúdvik said. "But Eiríkur is an experienced diplomat. We are certainly honoured we decided to join us".

"That is what I was afraid of", Fannar replied. "Not only it is well-known that he is a Catholic, but he has been ambassador in Celestis the last decade. That's not a nomination we would approve".

"I am not sure about Eiríkur's beliefs", Lúdvik answered, "but that's not the point. I don't know him personally, but I only heard positive comments in the ministry".

"Look", Lúdvik continued after a pause. "I will be busy as well as consequence of the campaign and I will have to leave Tavík this afternoon. Next week, I will be at my home in Stykkaeyjar. Come to visit, and send any of your men, and we will discuss this and other issues in detail. There is room for a new cooperation between our parties, I can't think why that couldn't be the case".

"Yes, Helga, tell him to enter now", Sigurdur Ólafursson said through the entry phone.

"Good day!", Gudmuntur Ólafursson said as he entered the office and closed the door. "It's been a long time since I came here from last time. I can see the decoration has improved, sort of. How are things going lately here?", he asked while he looked the packed room full of glamourous pictures and golden and silver records.

"Things are going as well as they could", Sigurdur Ólafursson replied. "I rarely come here more than once a week, I am usually in Hálfdanmár Avenue most of the days. But we have an important meeting today".

"Conspiring to break another rival, eh?", Gudmuntur said with a smile. "Have you time to have lunch today?".

"I am afraid I am not", Sigurdur answered. "I have to wait to Arnbjörn and Edda at the airport".

"It's alright", Gudmuntur replied. "I'll be the whole next month in Tavík. If you go there, call me".

"Sure", Sigurdur said". "Father has told me you are buying Vísarbladid".

"Well", Gudmuntur replied, "I didn't tell him...yet".

"Nýttgrund is not a large place, I guess", "Sigurdur replied. "And everything goes there through Kasteilhagt, they say".

"Yes, I guess the Archbishop and father have closer contacts, despite everything that happened a decade ago...", Gudmuntur said. "Vísarbladid is the second newspaper there, so I thought it would be a good chance as I has planned to expand business in Nýttgrund. I may even expand it beyond Eskárkrókur".

"Newspapers are never a good business", Sigurdur said. "And it won't do a miracle if you lack a solid base anyway. Are you already bored about Midverslund?".

"I have different plans", Gudmuntur replied. "That's all".

"Alright", Sigurdur added. "It's getting late. As you are going to stay in Tavík, I'm giving you a few tickets for our last premiers".

"Fine", Gudmuntur said. "Will you be attending?".

"I'm not sure", Sigurdur Ólafursson answered. "I may have some business to attend personally. Gudlaug may attend instead".

While Gudmuntur was checking the pockets of his jacket, he felt and unexpected form. He removed that object and found it was just a CD.

"What's that?", Sigurdur asked.

"Oh, it's just that something I found myself compelled to buy one night Fannar and I ended in a Midvogur dive...It's your now", Gudmuntur replied.

"Whatever...", Sigurdur said. "I'll tell Helga to call a taxi".

"It's not necessary", Gudmuntur replied. "Enjoy your visit to the airport. Greetings to the family".

Princess Svanhildur is crowned as Grand-Duchess of Vestland

Svanhildur Agnarsdóttir, 31, was crowned today as Grand-Duchess of the Grand Duchy of Vestland, one of the member states of the Eyrifjorduric Federation.

Svanhildur, who is the only children of late Grand-Duke Agnar III, was crowned as Grand-Duchess Svanhildur I, becoming the second youngest in the history of Vestland. The coronation ceremony took place in the Cathedral of Vestfellbaer.

Two hours later, the Grand-Duchess addressed one thousand guests, including members of the Eyrifjorduric Council and the Vestland Cabinet, and the Grand-Duchy's legislators in the parliament building in Vestfellbaer. Outlining her new role as monarch, Grand-Duchess Svanhildur honoured his father, who was Grand-Duke of Vestland from 1989 until his death one month ago. Svanildur promised to stand for the values anchored in the constitution and to be fully aware of her duties as sovereign monarch.

The Grand-Duchy of Vestland is the only member state of the Eyrifjorduric Federation headed by a monarch. The Vestland Constitution establishes a constitutional monarchy, so the powers of the sovereign monarch are limited and mostly ceremonial, although he or she has some influence in Vestland's policies. The current Prime Minister of Vestland is Njall Hakónsson, from the Liberal Democratic Party.

Grand-Duchess Svanhildur is married with Steinn Fridriksson, an economic scholar, and has one son, Prince Eyvindur Steinn-Snorrisson.

Progressive Coalition to confirm veteran official as federal candidate

Kevsiab Yim, a former candidate of the Federal Democratic Party, has surprisingly announced that he will run as candidate for the Progressive Coalition, a left-wing political movement formed by the Social Labour Party and other minor political parties, in the coming federal election.

Yim, 64, was mayor of Keveda from 1993 and 2011, first as an independent candidate and later as a member of the Federal Democratic Party. He had been expected to become a member of the Eyrifjorduric Council in 2013 as a Federal Democratic Party, but the poor result of the Federal Democratic Party in those federal elections, which saw the FDP seats in the federal government reduced from three ministers to just one, avoided such outcome.

He confirmed that he will run to the Senate in the Protectorate of Tvsevdarsvaedy, his local region. An ethnic Tseemtxias, the native minority in the Eyrifjorduric Federation, Yim is likely to be announced candidate of the Eyrifjorduric Council by the Progressive Coalition soon, aimed to become the first member of a left-wing political party in the Eyrifjorduric Council (federal government) since 1973, and the third Tseemtxias minister in the history of the federation.

The Protectorate of Tvsevdarsvaedy elects only one senator to the Upper House, so it is expected to be a tough race despite Kevsiab Yim's popularity in the region. Currently, the Progressive Coalition has no incumbent candidates in the Senate and just four in the National Assembly - all of them candidates from the Social Labour Party.

"I hope there is still time", Geirrsson added in Eyrifjorduric language. "I would like to rest a bit before going to the embassy...It was an exhausting day after that long flight".

"Yes, Mr. President", ambassador Eiríkur Haraldursson replied.

2018 Eyrifjorduric Super Cup kick-off

The Eyrifjorduric Super Cup, the main annual football championship between regional teams of the Eyrifjorduric Federation, started yesterday, with Vestland team defeating Nỳttgrund 1-0. In the following match, the derby between federal cities, Midverslund and Tavík teams were unable to score, ending with a 0-0 team.

The format of the Eyrifjorduric Super Cup is simple: each team plays every other team once (making a total of 21 matches), with home ground advantage alternating from year to the next. In case two teams end with the same number of points and wins, ties in the classification are broken by considering the points difference of the teams. The current champion is Narthaurblár, the team from the Republic of Narthaur, which won the 2017 tournament with a full supercup, that is, winning every match in the championship.

Narthaurblár hopes to win their 35th Super Cup, the seventh in the last decade. They will start in the tournament against a team formed by players from Kevada and Tseemeegen ethnicity, which will participate in the tournament for first time since this championship started in 1928.

Baldur Steinnsson inauguration as President of Narthaur is calmly celebrated

Baldur Steinnsson was sworn in as 19th President of the Narthaur Republic, in historic power transfer as, for first time since the 1960s, neither the leaving president nor the president-elect are candidates from either the Federal Democratic Party or the Liberal Democratic Party, the two political parties which had dominated the politics of the Republic of Narthaur since the 1950s. Baldur succeeds President Lúdvik Gudmuntursson, who was elected in 2012 as an independent candidate. Baldur Steinnsson was elected as the official candidate of the National Democratic Party, which was founded by President Lúdvik Gudmuntursson shortly after his win in 2012 presidential election.

President Baldur Steinnsson's speech was relatively short and dry, and it is expected that he will continue many of Lúdvik Gudmuntursson's policies, as many minister under his 2012-2017 administration will remain under President Baldur Steinnsson administration. Baldur Steinnsson himself served as Speaker of the Narthaur parliament and Minister of Home Affairs during Lúdvik Gudmuntursson administration.

"It is certainly understandable", President Syndur Geirrsson said. "It is reasonable and I have no issues about it".

"However, I propose to remove the Section III", Syndur added. "It is not exactly one of the competences of the Eyrifjorduric Council and this could be easily organized informally between your government and our sport federations, if you wish".

"I think that would be all", Synder Geirrsson continued. "We'd be glad with our visit if this treaty becomes a new step for EC-EF relations".

Grand-Duke Agnar dies

The Grand Duke of Vestland, Agnar Hallbjörn-Snorrisson, has died at the age 67, after almost three decades as sovereign monarch of the Grand-Duchy of Vestland, one of the member states of the Eyrifjorduric Federation.

The Gran-Duke passed away yesterday night surrounded by his family, the Vestland government announced. Grand-Duke Agnar III was hospitalised for a lung infection two weeks ago, and returned home to the Snorrgard Palace "to spend his last days", the palace informed. He was diagnosed with cancer in late 2016.

The Grand-Duke, who avoided being involved in political disputes, had a reputation as a bon-vivant who enjoyed cooking, opera and wine. Nevertheless, he was considered quite charismatic and respected by most of the population in Vestland.

The government of the Grand-Duchy of Vestland has announced that a state funeral will be celebrated in Vestfellbaer. All the members of the Eyrifjorduric Council, and representatives of the other member states of the federation, along a small number of foreign representatives, are expected to attend to the funeral next weekend.

Grand-Duke Agnar is expected to be succeeded by his only daughter, Svanhildur.

Syndur Geirrsson read carefully the text of the proposed treaty. "It is a reasonable agreement, and I hope it's just the beginning of a more friendly and constructive relationship between our nations", he said while realizing that the sixth clause would have been highly controversial in the Eyrifjorduric Federation not a long time ago. "I believe many people in the Eyrifjorduric Federation would be grateful if the Pope could visit our nation sooner than later, so we would be willing to help with that if that time comes", Syndur added.

"I believe we can start with the proposed and agreed agenda", the President of the Eyrifjorduric Council said while ambassador Eiríkur Haraldursson opened a folder a distributed some stapled papers. "The agenda starts with a discussion on education and cultural agreements if I am not wrong".

"We have already worked on that and I don't think there is much to discuss about it", Syndur Geirrsson continued. "Several Eyrifjorduric universities, both public and private, are interested to create an organized channel with universities and college of your nation in order to discuss proposals more easily. The Eyrifjorduric Committe for Cultural and Education would be interested to strengthen relations with your own education authorities. And of course, I was told that the Jökarvegur University, the largest Catholic private university in our country, would be interested to improve the already existing agreements with your country's institutions, and increase exchange students in both countries - although I ignore the details beside that".

"The second issue we proposed to discuss is trade and economic cooperation", the President continued. "That will be surely a more complicated issue which may require further negotiations as you understand. But our nation is relatively dependent of agriculture imports, so I believe your nation may offer something that would benefit both countries in that area. Of course, there is an important number of banks and companies from the Eyrifjorduric Federation which would be interested to increase or expand investments in the Ecclesiastical State...".

Syndur Geirrsson, the 70-year old President of the Eyrifjorduric Council and Minister of Foreign Affairs, arrived to the Ecclesiastical State, heading a small delegation from the Eyrifjorduric Federation. It was his first diplomatic visit to Albion since he became Minister of Foreign Affairs three years ago. It was also the first diplomatic visit of Eyrifjorduric government officials since a permanent diplomatic was established in 1968. As a traditionally neutral nation, such visits were not as common as in other countries.

Ambassador Eiríkur Haraldursson was waiting in the airport as well, as we was expected to have an important role in the Eyrifjorduric delegation, as he knew well the country and the language after six years in the Ecclesiastical State. Raised in a Catholic family in Höfnárjavík, Eiríkur had been appointed ambassador in the southern Albion nation after a long diplomatic career.

"Mr. President", Eiríkur told Syndur, "we have organized an event at the embassy, after the visit to the palace is over. I have included a small number of people, including important guests from ES' society".

"Yes, I was told about it", Syndur replied. "I would rather to rest a bit after the negotiations. But it's fine".

Federal city of Midverslund

While Fannar and Gudmuntur had been invited at the party at Hotel Magnús, they had different plans. Their car left the central district, soon entering the Midvogur borough. The grey and small buildings of the neighborhood, including a few remaining stone constructions, contrasted with the modern central district. If it were a more gloomy day, probably the contrast could have been a bit depressing. Although it was raining, it was a rather a dull day.

"There is nothing to do there. I am glad the election is over, I couldn't stand another three weeks", Fannar said as soon as their taxi stopped in front of Dymkur Club.

They advanced through the dense smoke. As soon as one of the waiters recognized Gudmuntur, they were invited to the VIP zone, which was barely more than just a podium nearby one of the corners of the club.

"Now we have serious things to deal with", Gudmuntur said once the waitress left after bringing the two cocktails. "Let's hope there will not be surprises".

While they were talking, the alternate chill out and dark music was followed by silence. A young woman wearing unisex clothing approached the stage after her name was announced. She timidly started to play her acoustic guitar and to sing a rhythmic melody with a deep voice.

"Even if everything goes alright in Stykkaeyjar, I am concerned abou the situation in Tavík", Fannar said. "You should tell your brother that our future will depend if they take the city this year. I will cause use serious problems if they fail...Now let me go to the toilet".

A blue-haired woman approached the table. She had a small basket in one of ther hands. "What do you want, girl?", Gudmuntur asked.

"It is just twenty-five peningars", she said while leaving a homemade CD on the table.

"Alright", Gudmuntur gruntly replied. "You can keep the change", he added, after leaving a bill on the table and just before he put the CD inside his jacket.

Hrothgard Church

The Hrothgard Church is the once official and largest religion in the Eyrifjorduric Federation. The Hrothgard Church is headed by the Archbishop of Eyrifjordur and it is organised into twenty-two dioceses. The current Archbishop of Eyrifjordur is Kristján Vihjálmursson. The Hrothgard Church is the official religion in the State of Nýttgrund, one of the member states of the Eyrifjorduric Federation.

History

The Hrothgard Church was established in 1868 during the reign of Erik II the Saint, third king of the Northern Kingdom.

The Hrothgard Church is based on theological ideas of theologian Hans Tryggvisson (1768-1849) and his supporters known as the Pious Reformers. A Catholic monk until 1799, Hans called for a theological and political reform of the Catholic religion. He became politically active during Eyrifjordur independence in 1818, serving as Minister of Public Education from 1824 to 1832. He was Dean of Vogardur University -the oldest university of the country- between 1834 and 1837, but his writings often clashed with the Catholic local authorities. A supporter of the monarchist system, he was protected by Erik I the Wise, who became King of the Northern Kingdom in 1844.

In 1856, a small group of Hans Tryggvisson's disciples published "The Proposals of Divine Reform", a theological statement signed by 21 Christian theologians. The proposal asserted and supported Hans Tryggvisson's view that "all humans are born morally and spiritually depraved, and helpless to do anything good or worthy...without a special infusion of God's grace to overcome the effects of original sins", and called for a reform of the Catholic Church. The publication of "The Divine Reform" caused a huge controversy in Vestfellbaer, and it was condemned by the bishop of the city.

Two years later, Erik III was crowned as King. He started several political and administrative reform, and soon he was interested in religious affairs as well. Concerned about the power of the Catholic Church and its ministers in the country, as they controlled most of the universities and schools, he called an unofficial synod to discuss theological and educational affairs. Supported by reformist theologians, King Erik III established an "Ecclesiastical Assembly", a government committee of clergymen headed by a lay appointee of the monarch. During the next years, Erik III passed several laws which forced to reform the Christian churches. As a result, the government of the church came under control of the Synod Assembly, which was composed both of bishops and lay bureaucrats appointed by the government.

King Erik III faced condemnation and was threatened with excommunication. Notwithstanding, his reforms were successful and the Hrothgard Church was officially established in 1868, and declared the only state religion. He also ordered the expulsion of all bishops and Catholic clergymen who opposed his reforms. King Erik IIi died in 1879. Two years later, he was proclaimed the First Saint of the Hroghgard Church. Hans Tryggvisson was also proclaimed Saint in 1889.

During the 1904 liberal revolution, the United States of Narthaur -later renamed as Republic of Narthaur- was proclaimed, established as a secular state. The Hrothhard Church remained the official religion of the Northern Kingdom until the kingdom was abolished ten years later. When the Eyrifjordur Federation was established in 1918, the Hrothard Church remained the state religion of the Principality of Konunglár -one of the member states of the federation, and following the 1964 constitutional reform, the state religion of the State of Nýttgrund. The 1968 Constitution of Nýttgrund also recognizes the Archbishop of Eyrifjordur as the head of state.

The current head of the Hrothgard Church is Archbishop Kristján Vihjálmursson, who was elected in 2008.

Organization and structure

The Archbishop of Eyrifjordur is the head of the Hrothgard Church. The Archbishop of Eyrifjordur is based in Eskárkrókur, the capital city of the State of Nýttgrund. The Archbishop summons annually all the pastors and theologians of the church to the Ecumenical Synod, to discuss the affairs of the church and society. The Ecumenical Synod has a say in all matters of theology and liturgy to be decided by the Archbishop and the Church Assembly.

The highest executive authority of the Hrothgard Church is the Synod Council, formed by eight clergy and two lay-persons elected by Church Assembly (Kirkjuding), and presided over by the Archbishop of Eyrifjordur. The Archbishop's office in Eskárkrókur also serves as the office of the Kirkjuding. Besides dealing with financial matters and personell, it also has departments of education and ecumenical affairs, church and society and communication. The church's publishing house and official newspaper are also situated in the Archbishop's Palace.

Since the Ecumenical Council of Midverslund in 1970, the annual Church Assembly is the legislative body of the Hrothgard Church, making most church law previously enacted by the Konunglár's Assembly. The Church Assembly or Kirkjuding is formed by 50 elected representatives, 38 ordained and 12 lay-people, and a lay Chairman appointed directly by the Archbishop of Eyrifjordur.

The Hrothgard Church owns seven universities and colleges (four of them located in the State of Nýttgrund), private schools, hospitals and other institution. While most believers of the Hrothgard Church are found in the Eyrifjorduric Federation, the Hrothgard Church also has priests serving Hrothgard congregations abroad.

The Theological Faculty of the University of Eskárkrókur, founded in 1924, educates the clergy for the Hrothgard Church. Since the Church's reforms in the 1970s, many theologians go abroad to further studies in seminaries and universities across Mundus. The Hrothgard Church is far from being isolated and is open to all contemporary influences and theological trends.

The Hrothgard Church is estimated to have more than 36,260,000 believers, most of them in the Eyrifjorduric Federation.

Political system of the Eyrifjorduric Federation

The Eyrifjorduric Federation is a parliamentary federal republic. The federal legislative power is vested in the two chambers of the Federal Council: the National Assembly and the Senate. The Eyrifjorduric Council holds the executive power and is composed of eight power-sharing Ministers elected by the Federal Council. The judicial branch is headed by the Eyrifjorduric Supreme Court, whose judges are elected by the Senate.

The competences of the Eyrifjorduric Federation (federal government) are limited to trade policy, national defense, and foreign policy. Regional and local politics vary in the different member states and federal subjects, which may have different political systems.

The Eyrifjorduric Council

The Eyrifjorduric Council is the eight-member executive council which constitutes the federal government of the Eyrifjorduric Federation and serves as the collective head of government of Eyrifjordur.

While the entire council is responsible for leading the federal administration of the federation, each Minister heads one of the seven federal executive departments. The position of President of the Eyrifjorduric Council is usually held by the eldest and most senior member of the federal government. The constitution establishes that there shall be at least one minister per member state or federal subject (excluding the Protectorate of Tsevdarsvaedy. The federal government is often a coalition of the main political parties, each party having a number of ministers that roughly reflects its share of electorate and representation in the federal parliament.

The constitution establishes that any elected official (from either chamber of the federal parliament, or from any national, regional or local parliament of any of the member states of the federation) is eligible to be a member of the Eyrifjorduric Council. Each Federal Miniser heads a federal government department, although they are not only responsible for their own department, but also for the conduct of the federal government as a whole.

The President of the Eyrifjorduric Council

The President of the Eyrifjorduric Council (sometimes unofficially known as President of the Eyrifjorduric Federation as well) has almost no powers over and above his or her six colleagues, but undertakes representative functions normally performed by a head of state or prime minister. It is a rather ceremonial position, which is often granted to the eldest or most senior member of the Eyrifjorduric Council.

The President of the Eyrifjorduric Council is the highest-ranking Eyrifjorduric official. In urgent situations where a Council decision cannot be made in time, he is empowered to act on behalf of the whole federal government. Apart from that, though, he is a primus inter pares, having no power above and beyond the other seven Ministers. Besides his role as president of the council, he also heads a ministry or department, as the rest of his colleagues.

The President of the Eyrifjorduric Council, however, is not officially the head of state, as this function is carried out by the Council in its entirety. However, very often, the President acts and is recognized as head of state while conducting official visits abroad, although very often visits abroad are carried out by the Minister who is head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Federal Council

The Eyrifjorduric Federation has a bicameral parliament called the Federal Council, which is composed by:
  • the National Assembly: 133 seats, also known as the Lower House.
  • the Senate: 17 seats, also known as the Upper House.
The Federal Council convenes to elect the members of the Eyrifjorduric Council. Members of both houses serve for 5 years and only serve as members of parliament part-time.

Political parties

In contrast with the political party systems of many nations, Eyrifjorduric political parties at the federal level are often only loosely connected with parties at the regional level. One exception is the National Democratic Party, which is organizationally integrated with most of its provincial counterparts in a highly centralized organization.

Eyrifjorduric Review

Republic of Narthaur elects new president

Baldur Steinnsson was elected the 19th President of the Republic of Narthaur, the largest and more influential member state of the Eyrifjorduric Federation.

Steinnsson received 42.2% of the vote, becoming the president which the lowest support in the popular vote since the 1968 constitutional reform - previously, only one Narthaur's president obtained less than half of the vote, Fannar Erlendursson, when he was elected in 1982 receiving 48.7% of the vote. According to the constitution of the Republic of Narthaur, the president is elected using a two-round system. However, if a candidate gets over 40% of the vote and be 10% ahead of their nearest rival, it is not required to get over 50% of the vote to be elected president in the first round.

The division of the opposition in several candidates has allowed Steinnsson to be elected president. Steinnsson, a former Minister of Security Affairs from 1997 to 1999, campaigned as the National Democratic Party candidate, succeeding as President of the Republic of Narthaur to Lúdvik Gudmuntursson, who was elected president in 2012 as independent candidate, shortly before creating his own political party. Gudmuntursson, who had a limited role during Steinnsson’s campaign, remains as Chairman of the National Democratic Party.

Ólafur Geirrsson, the candidate of the Liberal Democratic Party, was second, receiving 30.1% of the vote, while Ástídur Leifurdottir, who run as an independent candidate, obtained 24.8%. The Federal Democratic Party candidate, Dagur Njallsson, received 14.8% - the worst result for a FDP candidate since 1954.

While the Republic of Narthaur is the largest contributor to the Eyrifjorduric Federation, it is unclear if the election of Baldur Steinnsson will bring unexpected changes in the Federation’s policies.
