Fleshing out Samantra's secondaries
« on: January 08, 2022, 04:43:42 PM »
My main claim has actually four countries,  three of which Elista, Buryatia, Tuva are one province countries and will be eventually annexed by Samantra.

I am in the process of beginning to flesh them out so if you have ideas about their names ( I am considering changing them since they are based on RL nations/places) and/or have suggestions about what  you want to see in that region of Mundus please let me know. So far the only restrictions I have is they have to be mainly Slavic and fit in the context of the Rodinian sea nations.

If you don't want to overthink it, using a fictional name can be an alternative (even if not a very creative one) to RL names.

You can find more than a few Slavic-inspired ones in this list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fictional_European_countries

Alternatively do what I know a lot of RPers do and use village names of Google maps

We all know that "a lot of RPers" includes you, Dave.  It's all right, you can admit it.

More on-topic, though... one easy way to find different names would be to take a descriptive term and translate it into the native language of the state in question.  For instance, my original secondary nation, Ubakasa, took its name from the Hausa words for father (uba) and land (ƙasa), though admittedly that's not evidently the Hausa term for fatherland (that instead is kasar uba).  Neither Kalmyk, Buryat, or Tuvan are available in Google Translate (my typical go-to for this stuff), but if you wanted, say, Ukrainian names, you could have the following (with literal English translations):

Batʹkivshchyna ("homeland")
Peredhir'ya ("foothills")
Bilyudy (derived, probably incorrectly, from "bili lyudy", meaning "white people")

If you want authentic-sounding names, my recommendation is to pick a language you want associated with the country in question and play around with different translations in your preferred translation software until you find something you like.  Then, of course, record the derived meaning somewhere so you can use it as trivia in the future.

Throwing in my ideas:
First possible idea: a nation named “Neutral States” with russian culture, which had as background to have had nuclear attack or a nuclear powerplants detonating in the 70's leading to most of the country being hostile to human settlement, the nation falling into an autocratic regime, while being poor, and fighting such radioactive deserts, while relying on international help to survive, and maintaining a highly militaristic attitude because of the pirates and barbarians creating chaos since the order is lacking.

Second possible idea: a parliamentary technocratic regime, being anti-religious (would make sense, given how religious Samantra is, creating some opposition), bit like Fleur and communist regimes, but on steroids, and maybe replacing it instead by a sort of fanatism for rationality and science (a bit like the Cult of the Supreme Being during the First French Revolution, where virtue was the “God”).

Third possible idea: an environmental dictatorship? Like communism, but applied to religion, “saving the environment at any cost”, so like incorporating some of Singapore's policies and harsh sanctions, but going far far beyond. Nuclear energy being seen as bad, just like oil, gas and co. This leads to the country having limited technology because of its policies, but trying nonetheless to thrive. Most likely no armed forces. Would be inspired from Costa Rica too.

Fourth possibility: a Helus alien nation there, which would be a bit surrounded and hated (but unification RP would be tougher for you, since they wouldn't easily be converted to christianism and EM/Bakkermaya/Seaforth and co. most likely would hate you for it).

Fifth possibility: very original I know, a communist regime! However economically very liberal, like China (and becoming more so), and slowly progressing towards democratisation with reforms over every industry and field.

For name ideas, I just make them up personally, so here some passing through my mind: Yuchtin; Stavtak; Purayich; Ermogov; Navliadi. No idea what it'd mean in russian or other slavic language.

Just going to throw this in as these nations are around Rodina's area - you have the Earagon genocide I believe that got set around the mid 90's but the point is you could have refugee communities from that in these secondaries (I'm doing a fair bit of work on this in Melanie Bell's next adventure so thought it was worth mentioning)

Thanks you all for your suggestions and ideas, they are of great help.

Would anyone be so kind as to give a few basic details about Earagon? Where did the genocide take place? What is their native country? Are they monotheistic or polytheistic? I've searched the forum but I didn't find much except a few references to them.

The answer to both of the geographic questions is Rodina, particularly around Rodina's coastal area.

There's not much in the way of details as it never really got fleshed out, but what I'm planning on this is that it's a monotheistic faith.
