The Royal Highland Games (Open to anyone)
« on: April 01, 2022, 09:43:30 AM »

In accordance with the Treaty of Celtic Friendship the annual Highland Games will be taking place in Ui Cenneslaig. This major event in the Highland sporting calendar is not just a place for our athletes to compete in what for them is the pinnacle of their sport but also a place for the clans that have spread across Mundus to gather and reaffirm their commitment to each other. It is with these hopes that I invite the world to come and enjoy the games regardless of their cultural heritage.

We look forward to seeing you.

King Finley of Ui Cenneslaig

The Canoon Estate was one of the various properties within the Royal family of Ui Cenneslaig. Over the last two weeks it had been converted from open pasture land into a series of mini arenas each flanked with temproary grand-stands, a huge hospitality tent and several large marques over which flew various clan flags. It was expected that tens of thousands of people would attend each day. Naturally those visiting from abroad such as Kings and Queens from afar would be housed in the estate house where King Finley was especially hopeful that the nations of Eigg, Dal Raitha, Ruasliabh and Arcaibh would attend, it was the first chance to push for them to perhaps consider a wider friendship with their Celtic cousins but as always Finley would just be happy if his Ballycroy team won the Gaelic Football.

Lennox had returned from Lodja to attend and was already getting into the spirit of things by joining some men from various clans to fish in the lake to catch breakfast, it may have been 8am but already a few hip flasks of whiskey had appeared.

Queen Cait of Cantabria was out checking on teams from her adopted homeland. Despite being a Cenneg to the core she had least had to court the idea that she cared more for Cantabria.

Prince Keane was excited, having turned 16 just a few weeks ago he was able to compete in this years and while he was merely a squad player for the Ballycroy Gaelic Football team and unlikely to see any game time it was a thrill to think he would be surrounded by some of the best players in the world.

Keane's younger sister Isobel cared little for the sports, for her it was all about the dancing. She'd found herself a spot lying in front of the stage that would host the dancing event and was enthralled by the practice runs various groups where having.

The weather looked like it would be a beautiful crisp spring day as the hum of the first floatplane to land on the Loch could be heard bringing in guests from the capital, Claith. Lennox cursed the sound as no doubt the aquatic landing would disturb the fish and at present they had a very meagre breakfast in the nets.

Queen Talulla McElligott was possibly unlike the other monarchs attending in many ways. She was never expected to be a leader. It was only because of the freak nature of her birth that she had been classed as a member of the Aos Sí religious group. Apparently on the day of her birth there had been a bizarre alignment of some planets and a few local reports of deer movement meant local holy figures determined she was connected to this group. That had then opened the door to the best school in the nation of Ruasliabh and then soon after she had thought her life would be one of micro-biology work. She had been amazed to even be shortlisted as Queen and even more surprised when in 2017 she was named Queen by the Druids. Her husband, also from the  Aos Sí, had become King although in their homeland that meant very little as the monarch was the one with the power. The two of them had left their three year old boy Ruarc at home and Talulla was worried as this was the first time they'd both been away from him. Still she was excited at the prospect of the Games. She enjoyed watching the dancing as a child although she herself had very little skill in the art.

They had first checked in with some of the teams from Ruasliabh before making their way to the house to meet King Finley. "Its a pleasure to meet you." Talulla greeted him with a smile. "I am Talulla of the McElligott clan. We're excited for the games. When does the days events get underway?" She asked nervously as this was her first solo visit with a monarch.

Eithne Wallace was perhaps the opposite of Talulla. Since birth it had been known that one day she would be Queen and she'd grown up in the heart of a nation with strict social hierachies around leadership. Each clan had a leader, each family was part of a clan, and several clans would come under a Earl or Baron depending on where their land was. Each of these in turn owed loyalty to the monarch. It was a system as old as the hills of Arcaibh but it had seemingly worked well for hundreds of years. This all meant that Eithne was well prepared and used to events such as today. She was excited though. Even asked her advisers back home they couldn't recall the last time the clans of Arcaibh had been together with their cousins from Ui Cenneslaig or even as far North as Seaforth. She'd brought with her the First Minister, Rory MacDuff, he was excited for the events having competed in the local games as a young man but now in his sixties he feared his knee wasn't up to the job and as a result he was content to just wear his MacDuff clan tartan and cheer on his kinsman regardless of their nation of birth. The Queen had also brought Lead Bard Senán McKenna with her. He doubled up as the nations highest religious figure but also having a vital role within the nations politics. He'd been spending the morning wandering the grounds and offering blessings and support for those competing. Now they headed as a trio to the Estate house to meet the others. They arrived shortly after Talulla, "Good morning everyone." the Queen introduced her companions to Finley, Talulla and her husband.

President Meriasek, head of the Kussul, and President of the Third Republic of Loundres was a tall man. Born from a family of near giants, his height had always made the rest of his body look disproportioned, his slightly under-weight frame made him look more gaunt and grim than he'd have wanted, though he'd tried to hide it by growing a bear over his face over the last few years, which whilst it did cover the lower part of his face, did nothing anywhere else. To say he was ugly, would be cruel, and to call him unattractive or repulsive would be too harsh, he just didn't match up with what alot of people thought the two metre tall President would look like. His critics back home called him a skeleton; his supporters called him a jolly giant. And though the eyes were tired and strained after almost six decades of life, they did still sparkle.

Clutching his walking stick in one hand, and the hand of his granddaughter in another, Meriasek walked down the stairs from his vehicle. Aides, governors, secretaries and various heads of departments followed him. His son walked next to his father, trying not to make it too obvious, but preparing to catch him if he fell. Meriasek chuckled to himself. He was old, but he wasn't that old. His daughter-in-law hung back abit, not unexpected due to her shyness. The highland games were as much a diplomatic event as they were a sporting event, but they were also a chance for him to enjoy time with his family when all the pleasures of being friendly with powerful people was over for the day. Even if a diplomatic presence was needed throughout the day, the athletes of Loundres and those that served under him in the government were likely more than capable of exchanging pleasantries. Probably.

Patting his granddaughter towards her father, he and his entourage followed the event officials that beckoned him towards the other bigwigs.

OOC - don't mind the non celt

As far as Crown Princess Serenity was concerned this was just a nice day out, a chance to spend time with family, watch some sport and generally enjoy themselves, something she knew both her girls could do with. The whole idea for the trip had come from her cousin Cerys who'd been out to the games before, Serenity had spent most of the flight reading up on the rules of Gaelic football, she found it very similar to Achkaerinese Rules Football[1] though with a fair few differences in the rules, the stated intent of 'MacArdia' on King Finley's part carried with it a clear diplomatic undertone, which didn't bother Serenity one bit, she'd enjoy herself and maybe make some friends while staying away from that particular subject.

Serenity had come with her two daughters Lisa, her eldest and Astrid, who had a lovely and attentive terrier dog called Sparky on a lead, with a red jacket so to speak on, he was her new assistance dog to help with her deafness. Also there was Val Kirby, Astrid's sign language interpreter and then rounding out the family group was Serenity's brother Simon, his wife Lydia and their twin daughters Aeolia and Lamia. With the four girls running around giggling and Sparky jumping, Serenity glanced toward the estate house, "Guess we'd better say hi." she said
"Yeah." Simon said "And then sports?"
"That's the plan." Serenity said "Just don't rant about referees like you did in school."
"When did I do that?" Simon asked
"Practically every game you played in." Serenity said

Grand Marshall Kenneth Macrae of Dál Riata and Eigg was rather surprised when Queen Aoife had not attended this meeting. He had expected the Queen to not pass up a chance to meet with other Celtic monarchs but instead she had arrived the evening before and had set up a large marquee for the Maitland Clan of which she was part of. The marquee was bright yellow and despite the clans spanning several nations it was very clear this tent belonged to Eigg with images of galleons and blue stripes everywhere. While the Grand Marshall introduced himself Aoife was greeting people to her own little gathering of various clan leaders for breakfast. Just like Finley had she'd sent her staff to catch fresh fish and now it was being served on fire toasted thick bread and with scrambled eggs. She had in mind various plans that she hoped could circumvent the organisation of her Kingdom's relationship with Dál Riata and if it came off would leave her homeland in a much better position.

Jowan, arguably the best athlete in Loundres, committed animals right activist and Konfessor walked down the path idly, followed by his teammate and friend Robin. They'd been looking for the athlete's buffet and facilities for some time now. They hadn't been able to eat on the journey over, and so both could not wait to eat some good pasties and drink some strong liquor. The rest of Loundres' athletes had wandered off, to either practise, go to the toilet, flex to fans or, like them, gotten slightly lost.

Jowan's mood perked up however, when he saw the canopied top of those kind of tents that always have food or alcohol underneath them. Things were looking up.

Squeezing his wife's hand, together the trio walked towards the area.

For the Bene Gesserit this festival of culture carried mixed feelings. It was a chance to embrace their ancient Celtic side that they had managed to keep alive so far away from home for so many years, yet on the flipside it meant returning to the place of their exile. It was an easy enough hardship though, many of them still retained connections to the Celtic world. This was especially true of the Corrino family who had spent their exile in Ui Cenneslaig. It was left to Niklaus Corrino to head up the official delegation to the monarchs. He was accompanied by the Theocracies Foreign Minister, Melissa Debdale who had once served the Cenneg monarchy in their diplomatic service. Niklaus had been a close friend of King Finley back during his exile but this was their first meeting since the Theocracies independence. There of course would also be the intrigue of how the other Celtic nations would treat them. "Good Morning everyone" Niklaus was in joyful mood as he entered the Estate House. "King Finley the Reverend Mother sends her greetings and sends you an invite to the Theocracy once you have the time. Of course that extends to all of you." Niklaus turned to address the other monarchs but failed to explain that such a journey would mean travelling first to Chistopol before a drive down the desert highway.

Word had reached the Bene Gesserit of the meeting organised by the Queen of Eigg. It was a small but interesting Kingdom and so the Reverned Mother had instructed Simon Fremen to attend the meeting she was throwing. He wasn't sure how he would be welcomed but he was a Duke by title and his family had at least some renown in Aosta. "Your Majesty" he bowed to the young Queen. "I'm Simon, the heir to the title Duke of the Fremen. I'm instructed to bring the greetings of the Reverned Mother of Kaitaine and hope you'll accept this as a gift." He produced an ornate carved wooden box like those favoured by the Truthsayers as distractions to make during off duty periods. They contained the spice melange, the Bene Gesserit faithful believed it gave insight to the divine while to many of the non-believers it was just something that tasted like cinnamon and went nice of cake. Either way it was considered a gift by the Bene Gesserit and so Simon handed it over to the Queen.

Lilias MacIomhair was back on home soil and it felt like she'd never been away. During her young life she'd visited the Highland Games many times but this time was different. Just a few weeks ago she'd graduated as a Missionara Protectiva and now was proudly wearing the blue tunic of her faiths scholars. Across her back she had her fiddle and made her way into one of the tents serving food , she'd been timetabled to play and was now running late. She made her way inside found the stage, removed her tunic jacket and began to play. Half an hour later she finished and had a break where she found a seat among some of the others and enjoyed some food.

Evanthe and Emerson, with Josiah midway between them who had one had in Evanthe's hand and the other in Emerson's hand, each had to contain their joy as Josiah reacted to the sights around him as they walked. Evanthe proudly wore her Seaforthian Tartan and politely explained to passerby's that she was here not as the Empress of Rokkenjima, but as a Rhodes, and a former Governor of Somerset. Eventually her trio would catch up with the Achkaerinese, to whom she would offer a warm smile to Serenity as they continued to walk. As her eyes caught Emerson's in passing she blushed and turned away for a moment, before returning to Emerson's sight with her eyes locked on his.

"What was that for?" he asked. Evanthe sighed, "You wouldn't understand if I explained it at length, but you could say you and I have the blessings of my ex, and how often does that happen?" Emerson looked upon her puzzled for a moment, "We'll have some things to talk about when we get home, but, I've come to love your surprises, and I expect this instance won't be any different."

The breakfast room of the Estate House probably wasn't the place that had been expected to ever find itself hosting a gathering on this scale. It wasn't a palace or council chamber but was just a large family place to eat directly next to the kitchens of the house where you could hear the clanging of pans every now and again. Finley had hoped that the monarchs of the neighbours arrived and he wasn't disappointed. It was the first time he'd meet a lot of them and this made him hopeful for where things would go. What Finley hadn't anticipated was the arrival of the Achkaerin delegation, especially the two children and the dog. He didn't let it phase him however and after doing his best to greet the children and finding them some sweet pastries he considered giving the dog some attention however he understood the dogs purpose and knew it best not too and so despite his urge he left it alone. Finley's surprises kept on coming when the delegation from Dál Riata arrived minus the Queen of Eigg, he asked the Grand Marshall if he should expect her arrival. The surprises didn't stop coming when Niklaus Corrino walked in with Debdale following close behind. Finley suspected the Bene Gesserit arrival might ruffle a few feathers but he didn't care, he considered Niklaus a close friend and Debdale had been a good former employee. He gave Niklaus a bear hug and then shook Melissa's hand while giving her a kiss on the cheek. "Welcome back" Finley greeted them while doing his best to see the expressions of those gathered. He was just about to pop into the kitchen when Evanthe, Emerson and Josiah arrived. He wasn't anywhere as near pleased to see them as he had been the Bene Gesserit. He had a long history with the Anselmo's and had it not been with the young Rhodes boy being present he may have found it hard not to say anything. As it was Finley gathered everyone round the table. A series of cast iron pans were brought out by the kitchen staff, sausages, bacon, baked beans, haggis, neeps and tatties, white pudding and a vast array of other stuff. Without word Finley picked up a plate, whacked a load of haggis and tatties on the plate and slid it to Josiah, "Any lad with the last name Rhodes no doubt can manage a big boy plate" he smiled at the young boy and he proceeded to hand everyone else a plate to help themselves before finishing his own and taking a seat. "I'm excited you've all come." He began, "And while this might not be relevant to some of you around this table I'm hoping that this marks the start of the Celts continiously getting together. Today though is more about the beginning of forming our little community and even if Seaforth aren't here at least par of them are." He smiled again at Josiah. "So eat breakfast, get a good lining for the day and if anyone wants to know the rules of tossing a caber feel free to ask." He began tucking into his own plate full of food.

Lennox had caught wind of the Eigg meeting and suspected that his brother would want to know about the meeting Queen Aoife was hosting. He didn't know much about the Queen except that she seemed to have problems with the arrangement her Kingdom found itself in. He entered her tent and seeing a few people who had been fishing with him earlier he waved cheerily and offered the cooks some of the fish he had on a line. "Queen Aoife, my brother isn't aware I'm here I was just passing and thought it best to stop by and say hello." He wasn't exactly dressed for diplomacy in his now mud spattered kilt and damp woollen sweater. "May I ask why you're not at the breakfast with my brother?"

Aoife was hopeful that more people would come and speak with her and was pleased when Simon and Lennox arrived. The Queen was a little suprised by the arrival of the Bene Gesserit noble, she had of course read about them and admired the Truthsayers achievements but she was nervous of how meeting with them might be seen around the world if word got out. It could be worse though as she could have been alone. She gratefully accepted the box of this spice and was worried about taking after some the rumours that she had heard. She of course excused herself from trying some there and then, "I look forward to sharing this with friends when I get home. The creation of the Theocracy was quiet a conversation piece back home." she admitted. "How is the work of kick starting the Theocracy going?"

Of course the young Queen would have liked Finley to have turned up but the Prince had been busy working in Lodja and so was likely to be a man trusted with international political contacts. She was though a little nervous on how to answer his question. " The foreign policy decisions of my little Kingdom are sadly controlled by the  Grand Marshall ,Kenneth Macrae, as a result any input I had there would be simply ignored. It seemed better to have my own breakfast meeting and hope that some of the other nations would send someone as significant as yourself." She knew how the breakfast up in the big house would have ended, no doubt her and Kenneth would have been arguing over what their relationship with other nations should be. Plus some of what the Queen had in mind would certainly have upset the Grand Marshall. "Beside Prince Lennox I think ourselves and Dál Riata have a diverging path approaching. I'm championing the cause of Eigg independence where as Dál Riata are looking for ever closer union. I don't suppose you know what your brothers stance on this aim would be?" She figured it best just to be honest.

Queen Eithne helped herself to some of the breakfast while Finley chatted to the young Rhodes boy. She herself was hopeful of the closer union of Celt nations but she first had a more general concern. "Would you happen to know King Finley how the Wallace clan in Ui Cenneslaig are doing. I'd like to touch base with them while I'm here." She was keen to see if there were any opportunities to forge family links that could be seized upon. If the clan wasn't particularly well off the Eithne could do something to maybe help them. "We'd be excited to look at deeper cross Celt relationships though and this is a great start to it having so many heads of state together."

Ealar MacCallion was the Steward of the Queen, it meant he was the head of the Privy Council and one of the trio who made up the Three Estates which organised the decision making of the nation. He had been dispatched to meet with the Queen of Eigg. The people of Arcaibh were highly tied to the clan system and the chieftans and therefore the monarchy played an important part in their society. They'd prefer to do business with another monarch rather than some elected official but part of diplomacy was fitting in with the neighbours. "Good morning Queen Aoife." The steward greeted her and waited to be introduced to the others. "I'm interested in the Theocracy. To have Celts so far from the homeland so to say and I pray they're doing well."

Simon Fremen had to admit he hadn't spent that much time in the Theocracy since its foundation. He'd been busy still with his legal business in Aosta and while his parents had relocated he was yet to follow. Financially it made more sense to stick with Aosta for the time being. "Well Queen Aoife as of yet I've only paid flying visits to the Theocracy, time with family, try and find some place of my own for when I finally relocate. Things there are going well. A few small towns forming here and there around the edge of the desert but Sietch is becoming a little overcrowded now. I wouldn't be surprised if in the coming weeks something is being done to try and limit the influx of people. But things are going well. They've boosted the mineral extraction industry, glass manufacture. We're also considering an establishment of hydrogen production using the Kvćrner process. We've potential for huge solar farms and using the process we could become a major producer of hydrogen. Either that or selling the excess electricity to Chistopol." It was at present a pipe dream of the Theocracy to have some major industry to bolster their economy. "Although our stamps and coins have become somewhat of a collectors item." As MacCallion arrived and introduced himself Simon was forced to explain their prescence across the opposite side of Mundus. "I suppose deep down the early Bene Gesserit were just adventurers seeking to find some answers for themselves about the Universe. Something about Kaitaine I guess called out to them and now we end up with ourselves sandwiched between the Rus." He turned back to conversation with Aoife, "So is this just a social gathering or does Your Majesty have a purpose to this."

Lennox was hopeful of being able to work with Queen Aoife. The young monarch was talking of Celtic unity and was clearly committed to the idea of royal authority. He knew his elder brother Finley held these ideas dear and so was confident that the Cenneg would work with Eigg. "Rest assured Queen Aoife my brother would be happy to help. He dreams of a day when the Celts form a kind of alliance similar to something like MICA crossed with the Network of Crowns. Its Finley's belief that clans need chiefs, and that chiefs need Earls and of course that means Earls need Kings.....or Queens." he smiled at the young Queen. "I am hoping that we can do some things that show that we are friends. My understanding is that you have your own little militia, if thats the case could we perhaps invite you to come on a little training exercise with my own unit?" he then thought for a moment or two, "Perhaps if there is some product or material you're capable of sending to Ui Cennesliag that the Federation can't then we could cut you some kind of deal there?"

As Queen Eithne asked about the Wallace clan Finley finished eating a slice of bacon. "The Wallace clan aren't a major one here in Ui Cenneslaig, they hold some small farmsteads in the central part of the nation, their Chief is Jim Wallace, a decent fisherman but sadly not someone I know well." Finley shrugged. "They'll be here somewhere I suspect. I can have one of my staff track him down for you in you want?"

Queen Tallulah had been content to much away on some rye bread and scrambled eggs while the others chatted away. The Queen was keen to discuss closer co-operation with her Celtic neighbours and wasn't sure though if or when would be appropriate but there was no time like the present. "I wonder King Finley" she addressed him in a tone that was loud enough for both the Dal Raithian and Arcaibhians to hear. "No doubt you are aware of the Celtic Co-Operative Armament Project, ourselves along with the Dal Raithian and Arcaibhians set it up to jointly fund research into common military needs, so far 5 projects have come from it. We though want to make it more effective. You'll have seen the Zarptica fighter project from the S.U.N. to my understanding it was a highly successful arrangement, as have been our five previous projects. We'd like to invite you to become our forth member. You've a large military and we think you could contribute significantly. It'd benefit you too as we'd be sharing development costs of large projects."

Connor McKee has been dipatched to meet the Eiggites. He was a member of the  Aos Si and the Chief of the McElligott clan from which the Queen hailed. He was in his sixties and had spent much of his life as a lawyer and now in his last years before retirement was a member of the Queen's inner circle.  "In terms of helping your little Kingdom I suspect we'll be able to help. We believe the Gods have marked out people to be blessed by them, that these people are equipped best spiritually to guide our lands. We call them the Aos Si, its clear therefore that a King....or Queen, must guide the nation. I'm sure we can do something like our Cenneg friends to help you."

Potentially the most nervous person in the estate house's breakfast room was Val, just a dance student who was good at sign language and here she was translating for Astrid. She was being slightly slower than normal as she signed first King Finley's greeting and then along the food table, making sure she knew precisely what something was or how to describe it before signing it to Astrid, all in the name of education. Serenity meanwhile was helping Lisa with the same thing, although both girls stuck to things they knew and devoured the pastries that Finley had arranged it didn't mean they weren't curious, even Sparky got his dog biscuit. Serenity was keeping herself somewhat isolated from the subject Finley had raised, while she would jump at the chance to do some networking if the opportunity presented itself, she wasn't going to get in the way of Finley's vision she had her own reasons for coming to this and they were family in nature not political. She hoped Simon had 'base camp' for the day set up, though knowing him he'd probably be throwing a ball around with the twins which would hopefully keep them out of trouble.
